Down at the Barbara County Fair, we are patiently waiting for Chase Beckham and the crowd is growing. Everyone is super excited for him to come out. I'm at the Barbara County Fair in Philippine and I'm getting ready to go backstage and meet Chase here in just a little bit. So I wanna be doing that here in just a moment. - Well, I'll be introducing the Barbara County Fair Queen, Lindsay Wiese and runner up a lot of howdershellts coming up at nine o'clock. So make sure you stay tuned. My name is Melissa for WBRCDF. - WD&E, Alkins. (upbeat music) - And welcome back to Liberty High School, where Alkins has to lead 1914 over the Mountaineers of Liberty. What a game this has been, D. - Well, it's exactly what we expected. We knew there's gonna be a lot of emotions. You got two teams that if you look at their rosters, very, very, very young teams. - Yes. - A lot of freshmen are sophomores on both sides. You know, and there's a lot of, you know, an experience even in the junior senior ranks to a degree for both sides. - Right. - So, you know, I mean, it's kind of what we expected, but you know what, good game, that's all you can ask for. - Oh yeah, definitely. And of course, we thank Lottelty Tire Center for bringing us our halftime show and Liberty Mountaineer Band out on the field. And I'm sure they'll be well. I have yet to meet a bad band. So they're all good. I always like the band as they come in. - You just like this thing. - Well, I like that too. Okay, if you joined us late in the first quarter with 225, Hilliard got in from five yards for the first score of the game. Gosh, excuse me. And then in the second quarter, Hill scored, and then Phillips eight-yard run, and in 745 to play, Phillips 14-yard run, and then Hilliard 19-yard run, and Clevenger with the two-point conversion, and then Nick Bowers with that 59-yard touchdown run and the point after no good, 1914, the lead belongs to the Tigers. And, you know, it's just been a tale of offense and a tale of defense. Yeah, you do good things, and all of a sudden, you lose the fumble, you know, in close, and, you know, just different things. And penalties hasn't been that big of a problem yet tonight. And, you know, both teams play in a very clean game, by all means, but, you know, a lot of the jitters you think you'd see more of is like, off sides and motions, and we haven't seen it that often tonight. - Yeah, we haven't seen that, but I mean, it's just again, you know, it's the first night, it's the first week. You're always gonna have some ups and downs. And when a game like this, when you have two teams that are evenly matched, it basically comes down to which game makes that fatal mistake. - Yeah. - And which team Kevin loves it. - Exactly, exactly, exactly what we're at right now. And Elkins had an opportunity to, you know, march in the end, then take a two touchdown lead, you go in the half, and instead of fumble the football, now everybody still has a chance to come back in the second half and, you know, take the lead, and let's just think, go back and forth to the fourth quarter, and we'll just gonna have to see who has the ball last. - That's right, that's the way it looks. Okay, we'll be back the fourth half-time after these messages on 98-9WD and 8. - Now through September 30th, you can get up to $200 back on select good-year tires at Glottfeldie Tire Center in Elkins. When you purchase a set of four select good-year tires on a good-year credit card, you can get up to $200 back on a prepaid card, plus get an extra $50 on qualifying service purchases of $100 with a good-year credit card. It's time to say with a good-year rebate, Glottfeldie Tire Center on the Beverly Findlay, Elkins. - Score big this fall with Gomart. Spend your afternoons with John Ellison. Weekdays, three to seven. I'm 98-9, W-D-N-E. - And welcome back to Liberty High School, and what a game we have. 1914, Haggers with the lead. And earlier, we were telling you that both of these teams with younger players. And of course, we didn't get off to a good start here with the broadcast, we're picking it up better now. And of course, we didn't get the coaches interview that was sponsored by Scotty Restaurant of Elkins and Taylor Automotive with the pregame. And of course, Randolph County Solid Waste with their starting lineups. And I'm just gonna go quickly over the offense for Liberty tonight. - Sure it is. - Okay, the quarterback is Isaiah Ethelton, six foot, 175, a sophomore. And in the running backs, we have Quentin Hilliard, and he had five-six, the little guy that man can he fly. And then he's a junior. And then Landen Klevenger, of course, he's the big boy. 185, 5'11", and he is a senior. And then also Noah Schoonover, he's a running back, and he's just a junior. And then it tied in, they have Caden Dodd, and he's just a junior in Brayton, Layfield, a sophomore, okay? And then on the tackle, the left tackle is Hendrick, he's six foot, and he's just a junior. And then Landen Klevenover, the senior, he's at the left guard. Jayton Thompson is a center, he's just a sophomore. And at the guard, Caden not the junior, and Isaiah Curry, also a junior. And do you want to take a look at what we didn't get to talk about earlier with the Elkins Tigers? Yeah, yeah, let me give you what I sure they gave you in the beginning. And we saw the Tigers. So the starting quarterback at Forest for the Tigers is Nate Powell, I think the sophomore. And at the back field at Wayne Team/Jet Series Motion Book, we've got Dylan Fortnite, Nick Bowers and Kyle Reed, W.R. Backs. At tight end, we've got Preston Eversall, the junior. The split end is plenty of Miller, the senior, in his first year playing football. And at the plate boys across the line, at the left tackle, you've got Aiden Lambert left side. At Turner, Elkins Stanley, who's a sophomore, you've got Devon Holford, the tank. Everybody guard, he's a sophomore, and then the finishes up with Camp Warner, who's also a junior at the right tackle. So again, there's a lot of young bodies out here on the field for both teams, but you know what? These Tigers are looking kind of good. Yeah, they are. And you know, I think, you know, a lot of it, too, is going to be how well either team can start the second half. You know, that could be the tail of the tails. We'll see, you know, we'll see about that. But again, you know, a big thank you that, you know, we didn't get to it, but, you know, Scotty, for our coaches interview, Taylor Automotive, for our pregame, and of course, Randolph County Solid Waste Authority with the lineups. And if we ever have an injury-advanced hearing solution, and Glottfeldy Tire, hey, these dudes bring us the halftime show, and we really like that. We also want to thank Barners Outdoor Power Equipment, and they provide us with the post-game show. And then we have Mountain State Structures, Mountain Ear Home Care, Mountain Valley Bank, Ligot Supply, Performance Chevrolet, Elkins Builder Supply, Clayton Holmes of Elkins, and Sonny's Carpet. So, you know, we have a list of good sponsors, so if you see them, you know, hey, step in and say, hey, we appreciate this because, you know, able to give Elkins the opportunity to listen to myself and demand you on every Friday night, all season long. - Well, we can get on the air. - Yeah, well, we can get on the air. Okay, yeah, I know, you know, you're fine. And, you know, for you folks listening, you know, the first part of the game was just, you know, we apologize, but, you know, we're running on pins and needles, trying to get this out in the other don, and we're both very frustrated. And finally, Dee got us on, and we're very, very appreciative of that. And don't forget, next Friday night, Elkins will be at home to face the Lincoln. And of course, 645 will be the pregame show, and seven o'clock tip off. And Elkins, coach Ware said he wants to see that stand, the stand's just completely full. - We're shutting Randolph County down next Friday. I'm making a petition to the board right now. I work with his in all schools. (laughing) Off on all levels, we're shutting down work. There's no work on Friday. - Good luck. - It's gonna be a big old tailgate party. - Yeah. - For the first home game of the season. And that's just all there's to it. - Yeah. - That's what's happening. I'm shutting Relkins down. - There you go. - Come around. - And I'm gonna say hello to my beautiful mom who's listening to us tonight. And of course, my beautiful wife Kay, who takes care of us. Thank you very much for listening. And all the listeners out there. You know, I've got Jerry Wymer, my old buddy who listens to me. And, you know, it's kind of funny with workmen there. It's Maggie's not here. I'm sure she's home listening. - There you go. - A little sister. Oh, she's such a sweetheart. - Yes, indeed. You have anybody you want to say, hey, too? - Oh, yeah. - Of course. - Of coop and meatballs. - Well, the coops are either on the deck or the garage. We had that conversation later. But they are listening. So, shout out to the coops and the danglesers and the neighbors, all the neighborhood. Obviously, my family, I think my kids might be listening, maybe possibly. The work crew, the megacorps, my work family, love you guys to death. They've got to give a big old birthday shout out to my quarterback. My little quarterback, Kay and Daniel, turns eight today. - Wow. - So, he's gonna do big things in front of you. Oh, yeah. He's my little guy in my quarterback. He's gonna do big things. My nephew, Alex Thompson, I'll have a birthday on Saturday, tomorrow. And my center, wayla McCauley, will have his birthday on Sunday. So, we celebrated that last night. So, shout out to those guys. - Yeah, we're gonna have shut out 'cause down for the whole weekend. - We're shutting everything down. I'm calling it right now. Jerry and Barker, where's marriage? I'm calling Jerry and Mark, too. We're shutting it down. - Yeah. - But no, just thank you to everybody who listened to it every week. - Wait and Kay, and of course-- - Forget them. - No, and I can't forget, you know, Isaac Sasha, Olivia, and Jackson. - Guess what? We got a new one this year, too. How 'bout the moves? - Oh, my goodness, yeah, the moves. - They forget moves. - No, sir. Okay, and we're gonna take another break and we'll be back after these messages on 98-9W D&D. I need everybody to come out and support these years. We use football points. I go on it. We're shutting it down. - Hey, it's just the future though of the Elkins High School football teams. - Well, it really is. I mean, I coach five to seven year olds and it's so awesome to see them at this age because they can barely spell football. Nonetheless, I don't understand it. And then you're teaching the game and then to watch them progress as they come up through the years and see them get to this level, just like some of these kids I've coached that are out here that are serious now, it's chilling. And it's rewarding at the end. And I'll tell you what, it's fun. And I love every second of it. - We having an earthquake here? - I'm telling you like this. That was a 4.5, like I'm about to run. I don't know what's going on, but I'm not cool with things shaking when I'm suspended in the air. - Wow, something's going on. - Help. - Okay. And, excuse me. Okay, Liberty, we'll get the ball as we begin second half action here. And again, the score is Elkins 19 and Liberty 14. And, you know, I got a text from John Bennett saying, wow, what a way for the first half of a game to be in the very first game for the Tigers. - John Bennett. - And indeed, you're right, yes. - I forget, you know, we got the shapers and the duties that listened to us. Oh yeah, there's a boy Todd, probably other shepherds listening to us and an old buddy from high school and went to the 30-year reunion. I got guys from out of state saying, "Hey, man, we listening, you got it ready." That's pretty cool. - Yeah, it is. - Dr. Tyran Kuffieke and everything. Let's see Kentucky, if you're listening. There's your shout out, buddy. - Okay, Elkins will kick from right to left to Liberty. And again, what a game it's been. And, you know, the question could be, which team can get it going first in the second half or, you know, who can get the momentum and get it going or who can stop who? It's just hard to tell. - It's a huge draft for Liberty, especially the way the first half ended. They could have been down two scores. You got lucky, you know, you caused a fumble and now you get the ball to start the second half. Big drive right here. - Indeed. All right, here comes the kick and it's a squibber and it's gonna be picked up. Oh, almost bounces over his head. At the 14, the 15, 20, 25, 30, look, 20 feet to 40. What a run, 45. And we've got a player down and finally, who was running that ball? - Yeah, that was great to tell you the running back. - Hell yeah, okay. - You couldn't have for a better start in Liberty. - I mean, he's inside Elkins' territory at the 41-yard line. That's exactly what they needed and that's exactly what the Tigers didn't need. - Right. Whoo. So, I guess we'll see what happens here. You know, both teams doing well in certain areas and both teams struggling in certain areas. - Oh, and Liberty's not gonna panic right now. They're right where they want to be. They're gonna pound the rocks. If they can average three and a half a carry and move the chains every three or four downs, they're good. - Okay, at the Elkins' 41 moving from left to right, ball right in the middle of the field. And here is the play and they're gonna give it to the big boy and look at this, he only got a couple that time. And you know, Elkins that time got him by the late flag. - Yeah, that's probably very late. - Some personal doings down there. - Yeah. - With guests. - Wow. - Let's see what happened in the scrum down there. We'll see what they called it. They don't need any personal fouls. - Yeah. - I see them right now. - It looks like Elkins is backing up. - Yeah, that's not what you need. That's not a good start as far as the kickoff and then you turn it, follow it up with a personal foul. - And here it is. - No. - Oh, it's going the other way. - Oh, it's going the other way. - Well. - Personal foul. - You're there with liberty. - You don't want that either. You just had a great quick return and now you're gonna be back on your side of the field. - That was kind of weird because Elkins was backing up and all of a sudden, I mean, that flag came out extremely late. I did not see what happened, but. - Well, there was. - And the ball's gonna be clear back D. I'm sorry, the ball's gonna be clear back to the Liberty 47 yard line. - A bunch of players all kind of mumbled together. They don't know if somebody said something 'cause there was two referees right there as well. - Okay, Elkins with the lead, Liberty with the ball. 1914 the score and Liberty is going right up the gut and a pickup of what, about three? - Pick up the three, I'll tell you what. Owen Stanley shot you the line. - Owen Stanley. - He didn't make that tackle here. He might be in the end zone. - Okay, the ball at the 49 yard line. 49 yard line of Liberty on the left hash and they move again from left to right. And Liberty trailing Elkins 1914 with 11 minutes and four seconds to go in the third quarter. Okay, is this third down? - This is third down. - Okay, third and 20, 25. - Third and the whole lot. - Yeah, third and the whole lot. Okay, this time the big boy gets it again. He's breaking back those 11s here, gets to about the 40 yard line and he gained the whole lot. - He did. That kid is a monster. Okay. - So the yard gain, that's gonna put him back in manageable. - Oh yeah, they're at the Elkins 39 now. It's where it's gonna be forced down and about eight. - It's about four to eight, at least it's four to manageable. - Oh yeah. - Inside of 10 yards again with a team that does it fast very often. I think three more attempts that we normally see them through, but they haven't been successful completed. - Well, 10 and a half minutes to play. Order number three. Fourth down, four Liberty. Back to pass the ball, he's got all time and he's got a man. Look at this. And was that Quentin Hilliard? - No, that was thought, I believe. - Okay, guys. - Okay. - So Dodd gets enough for a first down and the crowd's starting to get into this too for Liberty. The ball's gonna be spotted that the Oakland's 20-yard line on the left hash. - Needed eight, got 19. - Yeah. And maybe they surprised the Oakland's defense by passing that time. - Well, that's the thing with this little bit of your offense. They'll lure you to sleep and nothing, you know. - And they set up in a stick-eye 95% of the time. And here is the little man with the ball and he's sneaking through those holes and then he's inside the 15. It looks like to about the 14. So a nice pick up there on first down. And that's gonna bring up a second and three. Actually, he got seven yards on that, D. - Well, he's quick. He's shifty and you lose him in the pile. So once he gets to that line of scrimmage, you can't find him. - Oh, Hill, that's right. - So he squirts out of there. - And he's only about five-fives, so that's-- - Some thing, he's a tiny guy, but-- - Mm-hmm. - Okay, second down and three, non-23 to play, quarter number three, Elkins leading Liberty, 1914 and Liberty in the Red Zone. And Liberty, and the ball is handed off and not a hole out there. Or-- - Who was that? - It was a hole. - It was a hole. - It was up back. - What? - That was-- - No, you're tall, okay. - Yeah, you still can't pick him out. - (laughs) - Now, if you get dark and you said, what do we just think? - Yeah, you can't think. - Okay, it's going to be third down and about two and a half yards for Liberty. 848 on a turning clock, quarter number three, Elkins 19, Liberty, 14. - They're inside the Red Zone, so-- - Oh, yeah. - This is four down territory for sure. - Mm-hmm. - And the quarterback's going to keep it, and wow, he got a first down and then some. So nice move, and the ball's going to be at about, what, the six-yard line it looks like? - Looks like that, right about where they're going to spot it. - Mm-hmm, that was a nice run there by Efland. - Well, I said it earlier, they've got something working inside the tackles there. - Yeah, okay, so now that's going to bring up first and goal from the five-yard line. So, Liberty knocking on the door, trailing 19-14 with 8 minutes and 18 seconds to play on a turning clock. The ball right in the middle of the field, and the stick eye again. And here's Efland, and it gives the clevenger this time, and there's not going to be much there. So there's, wow, they are hitting him low. - Yeah, or Quicksion here, I'm going to talk about both. What is going on tonight? - Wow. Okay, 7.54, and it's going to be second and goal, and it looks like the ball is at the four-yard line. It's hard to see from here. - It's just inside the five, so. - Yeah, we'll call it the four. - This might be Mr. Clevenger again, a couple of handles. - It could very well be. Okay, second and goal. And again, not a surprise. It's the stick eye, Levenger up over the center. And here is the give to the little guy, and that's Hilliard, and Hilliard gets close. He's about the two-yard line. - It's like right around the one or two. Kind of hard to see from this angle. - Yeah, it is. - I guess, hey, it looks like the one-yard line. The third and goal from the one-yard line. Seven minutes, five seconds to play. Quarter number three, Liberty trailing 1914, but they have the ball at the Oakland's one-yard line. - Well, this is either right. They have one in the quarterback keeper. You handed off the landing clevenger from six inches out. - Yep. Okay, first and goal. And. - QB keeper. - Quarterback keeper. He's into the end zone. Nice call play, nice play for this. Okay, and that comes with 6.45 to play. In the third quarter. - Well, just keep in mind again, that was a great drive by Liberty coming out of halftime. Like, especially when they could have gone down two scores before the half. - Mm-hmm. - Now, Elkins has to put all that behind them, and they're gonna have to answer. - Yes, indeed. Okay. So now it's 20, what do we think they'll do? - It's 20, 19. - Well, I haven't seen him kick very much. - I haven't either. - They're going for a few seconds of your choice. - Yeah. - Look for Hillier to look for Dodd down here. - Yeah. - Okay, from the stick. And here is the give and Hillier. - Here it is. - And he did not get in. They said no. - Well, I was sure he got in that time. - I thought he did too, but then the other side of the field ran over, said no, he did not make it. - Wow, no soup for you, young man. - Okay, 20 to 19, Liberty regains the lead, but back with the kickoff after these messages on 98.9WD&D. - It's a mower mega sale at Varners Outdoor Power Equipment. Call 681-298-5040. - Joe Danger, week day mornings from 6 to 9, a '99 W-T-M-E. - And welcome back to Liberty High School, where Liberty has just retaken the lead with 645 to play in quarter number three, 20 to 19. What a game we have, first game of the season for both games and I'm telling you what, these players are giving their fans everything they want to see. - Well, the important part for Liberty is they ate up nearly half of the third quarter. - Yeah, they did. - It was almost a six minute drive, in which, you know, put a hurting on that Tiger defense and you got a lot of these players that go back and forth on both sides of the ball. So let's see what the Tigers can do on defense on offense now. Okay, kicking from left to right is a little guy. Look at this. Oh, and almost Elkins able to fall on the football. So, Elkins, and let's see who that was. That was Devin Hover, Devin Hover fell on the football, which was good news and I thought it was going to squib out of there, but it didn't. - No, we did not, and I'll tell you what, we've got some good kids in the community. We just had two little girls come up here that found $200, Bill was landing the ground and came up here to report it. Who does that these days? - He was mine. - He was here. (laughing) - Oh, wow, look at these girls. - Listen, kudos, kudos to the lady. - That's right. - I mean, anybody else would have walked off and-- - Oh, yeah. - Had themselves a new pair of shoes or something, but you know what, there's some good kids left. - Okay, 42 yard line of Elkins first and 10. And here's the gift to Bowers, not much there, but look at him, he's making it himself. He's up over midfield and inside of Liberty territory, man, he got hit hard and he just bounced right off of that hit and first down Elkins at the 44 yard line of Liberty. - You're seeing a big difference in Nick right now. I mean, last year he would kind of hesitate, put his shoulder down before he got going. Now he's just-- - Oh, he's going to poke in the hand off but he's 100 miles an hour when the ball touches his gut, so-- - Yes. - You see the payoff. - Okay, first and 10 Tigers. And they are at the right hash mark of Liberty's 44 yard line. Okay. - You do, that's awesome. - That was my heart. You don't see people do that these days. - No. - And you about to take it. - No, I don't want you to take it. - All right, first and 10 Elkins. And here is the hand off and this time, the hours didn't find as much, but he still got positive. He already got out of that. And they're going to spot the ball at the 30, 39 yard line of Liberty where it's going to bring up second down and about four and a half. - I'll tell you what, he's running with a different purpose to start this season and that's a good thing because-- - Yeah. - Six minutes and 10 seconds to play in the third quarter, 2019 Liberty with the lead Elkins with the ball. - The Tigers go with you. The other man goes, if he's doing that, then he's going to have to. - You better believe it. Okay, Sarah, line up over soon. And here is the give and look at this. Bowers all the way up the middle. He's still in his feed at the 35, 30, 25. And finally knocked down at about the 24 yard line, first and 10 Elkins. Wow. And I'm telling you what, you know, that wing tee and that jet sweep, that's something that, I guess, you know, it's full in Liberty. - Well, it's a lot of misdirection. - Yeah. - So, you know, it's, you got to be on your toes with a defensive side, especially at front. You know, and the offensive line of Elkins is getting penetration on that defensive line and the linebackers are trying to figure out what the rainbacks are about six yards deep. - Okay, back, running back there. The back running the ball is Caden Phillips. And Phillips with some good yardage just he gets up over the 20 and at about the 16 yard line. - That's actually what Caden has, super hard tonight too. All these backs are running hard. - Yeah. - It's a great thing to see. - So the 16 yard line, where's the ball, where the ball is spotted? And that's going to bring up second and about two and a half. Wow. Hey, the referees blow their whistles. What's going on? - Yeah, I might have an equipment issue over there. Well, let's see. Oh, I think something was going on with the big o's, the equipment, everything. - Yeah, so they have to substitute, okay. - I'll tell you what, Elkins might be putting us together a little too quick. - Yeah. - I don't lose one of those defense out a little more. - All right, second down, Elkins. And here is the give up the middle and it looks like a first down. And who was that carrying the ball that time? - It would be Mr. Bowers. - I didn't see it. - All right, so Mr. Bowers picks up a first down and the ball is going to be spotted at the 18 yard line. So Elkins in the red zone, 454 to play quarter, number three, 2019, Liberty with the lead. - So you wouldn't think Bowers is having the night. I mean, I missed the first quarter stats with the, whatever's, but I mean, he's already at 125 yards and that's just what I have. So he's probably well over 130 yards right now. - Okay. And here is the give again to Bowers. Bowers going up the middle and they have him. Look at this. If he gets away from the Bowers, he's going to go into the end zone. They had Bowers down, the whistles didn't blow and Bowers went all the way to the end zone. - In one cave. Wow, 13 yards. - Pater. - Mm, mm, mm. - They had him initially stopped at the end of about two. He kept the legs churning, would refuse to go down and Liberty just couldn't bring him down. Next thing you know, he squirts out. Now was that 13 yards or more? - That was 14 yards. - Wow. Okay. Now we'll see what Elkins will do here. - Looks like they're going to go to Elkins too. Okay, Elkins going for two. And here is the give to Bowers and Bowers gets in. So the two point conversion is good. 28, 19 Elkins, or excuse me, listen to me. I'm so used to, woo. I'm so used to other things, D. - Should be up three. - 28 to 20. Right? Or 27 to 20 on 40. (upbeat music) - And welcome back to High School, where the Tigers come to take in at B2720 here in the third quarter with 434 to go. - Whoo, what a game, D. - And I'll tell you what, Nick Bowers is having himself a game and that two-point conversion was very important because I put them up seven and it seems like both Kings have now settled to go for two, not necessarily a given. So, even if Liberty scores here, that two-point conversion is not a given. - Yeah, they have to get in there, right? - So, if you force them to go for two, they either go up one or you're down one. So what do you do if you're Liberty if you score? Do you have anybody that can kick the tie this up? - Okay, and it'll forget next Friday night, Oakland's at home against the Lincoln Cougars and you can catch all the action right here if you don't come to the game and that'll be 645, three game and seven o'clock kickoff. We will be on the air at 645. - Yes, we will. - All right, Elkins will kick from right to left. And what a game this has been. - Whoo! - Wow, wow, wow. - Now, let's see how it plays out 'cause Elkins scored pretty quick. That was about a two minute, just a little over two minute drive. But now Liberty is gonna get the ball back and they're gonna try to extend this thing and run as much time off the clock as possible. - Oh yeah. - Let's see what they do to this Tiger defense and try to wear them down. We'll see if that Tiger defense can get a stop. Get the ball back. - Hey, D'Angelo kicks and it's a squibber and it's gonna be taken by Hillyard and he's gonna be upended as about the 32 yard line. - Meat rally rider. - Rally rider, yes. - Rally rider on the stones. - Yeah. I'm glad you have your singing voice back. - I'm here, I'm back now. We'll be. - Mine's too dry to be singing right now. - Yeah. All right, and actually they'll spot the ball at the 33 yard line on the left hash as Liberty moves from left to right. Trelling 27-20 with 4-26 to play, order number three. And we're glad you joined us here on 98-9-W-DNA. Okay, Liberty with the football. - Now what Liberty cannot do is they're three and out. - Yeah. - They've got it for long, this drive as long as possible and try to punch one in the end zone. - And Liberty's gonna call a Tom out. Okay, so with the break in the action, we'll pause 32nd with 98-9-W-DNA. - Score big this fall with GoMart. My class make Crystal Shoe checking in from Charlotte, North Carolina, hello, Crystal. - Welcome, welcome, Crystal. All right, okay, Liberty, we'll see what happens here. And they did burn the Tom out. That could be important too, you know? - Absolutely. - Okay, surprise, surprise, stick off. And here is the give to Clevenger. Clevenger this time drags tacklers with him as he gets over to the 30 to about the 32 yard line. - Well, that's what you want to do if you're Liberty. Again, you want to average three and a half, four yards of carry, you know, do that three times, there's a change, repeat, rinse, repeat. - So that's going to bring up second down and six. - As we give him four, ball at the 30, ball at the 39, almost the 39 yard line of Liberty, they move from left to right and the ball in the left hash. It guy again. And here is the give to the little guy. And look at this, he's busting through there too. And he's going to be close to a first down. Now actually that was scoon over. - And scoon over scoon over that time. - Scoon over got it that time. - Thanks, Steve. But he, you know, he's, like you said, they keep getting three and four yards and then they're fine. So it's going to be third down and one. - And that's the age you're hummus football. That's just what he does. - It is, yeah. - You get the big boys up front, they can lead the way. - Yeah. - He knows the home run. - I spoke to him earlier in the week and I'm telling you, he's such a gentleman. - He's a great guy. - I love the guy, he is awesome. Yeah. Okay, third down and one. Four Liberty, could just be Clevenger. - I wonder. - I wonder. No, don't look back. Hey, look at this. Elkins almost went to sleep, but he got up over the 45 to the 47 yard line. Wow, five yard pick up. - I'll tell you what. Dylan 40 was right there and he actually tried to rip the ball out of the pants and came through and a good job by helping to hold on to that. - Yeah. So the ball's going to be at the right hash mark. 47 yard line of Liberty, three minutes and six seconds to play in the quarter and Elkins leading 27-20. - And they move the chain. So. - Yeah, they move the chain. - Level is going to work the play clock. They're going to bring it down into single digits. - Oh yeah. - The numbers with the average and they're going to try to punch one in the end today. - Mm-hmm. - Uh-oh. - Can't get one off the field now. - Yep. Oh boy. - Oh boy. - Yes, they had to use a timeout. Oh my goodness. - That could be crucial. - That could be crucial. And we'll talk more about that in 30 seconds on 98-9 WD&E. - This past July, the CBS News program Money Watch ranked the top stage to retiring. Guess who came in first? You got it, West Virginia. It was not just for its affordability but how the state presents itself. The rushing waters of a river that feed a lush green field and the mountains that reach up to touch the blue sky. Who made this possible? You. Doing your part to keep the hills, hollows, and streams of West Virginia litter free. No wonder they call it almost heaven. This message brought to you by the Randolph County Solid Waste Authority. - This is Randolph County share for all building reminding you to be safe when you're way home from the game tonight. Let's go Tigers. (upbeat music) - Okay, welcome back. At Dominion, we said we talked a little bit more about that. That's important because there's two minutes and 42 seconds to play in the third quarter and Liberty just used their second time out in the second half. - Well, you have a whole quarter to go and this is a ball game where literally every play is crucial. - Yeah. - So if you get in a situation in the fourth quarter where you're unsure of yourself or don't have enough on the field or wherever the situation is and you have to burn another time out, that's a big deal. - It sure is. Okay, quarterback back to basketball. Look at this, downfield, he's got a man and there's a flag on the play. - Or they're gonna call pass interference and finish the veteran. I'm telling you what, he played that. He couldn't have played any better on thing. - Yeah, yeah. - Now the one they didn't call earlier probably should have been. That one was absolutely just great defensive. It looked like from here, but. - Yeah. - The Liberty Wider Shever did a great job of coming back to the football and made contact with Sylvester and that's what they're gonna call. - Yeah. Okay, so that's gonna be a, excuse me. That's gonna be an automatic first down. And the ball will be put into Elkins territory and it's gonna be inside the 40 to about 38 yard lines. - Well, again, that is another first down. I'll leave you serious. - Yeah. 236 to play, third quarter. - Okay, so you think she's been on the field for about four minutes now? - Mm-hmm. Okay, first and 10. Clevenger, look at this, look at this. Clevenger hit in the back field for a loss. - Clevenger just made, made tank. - Yeah, yeah. - Yeah, that was seven. - Woo! - Just blew up the Liberty line. - Wow. Well, I tell you what, maybe other people weren't expecting that, but Holver was. - Yeah. - Okay, the ball at the 41 yard line, where it's gonna be a loss of about a half a yard, second and we'll call it second and 11. Two minutes and five seconds to play is a clock turn here in quarter number three. - It was interesting to real quick, Valley Wepto, four-point leader of Tigers Valley, 18, 14 and a third. - Wow. - Close one. - That is. - Okay, quarterback's gonna keep it. Look at this, he's running around in the end. He's still in, no, he stepped out of bounds. Okay, I thought he was state in bounds, but he did not. - Yeah, I will say he stepped in. - He went out right at the 30, yeah. - Could he cut back about six inches before that? He would have been down the sideline. - Yeah, and I'm telling you what, he would have been at least to the 15 or 10 before Elkins caught him. - For sure. - And so now he stepped out of bounds right at the 30 yard line. So first and, or excuse me, third down in two, four Liberty. At the Elkins 30 yard line, right hash mark, they moved from left to right, 150 to play, quarter number three, 27, 20, Elkins with the lead. - Liberty's right where they wanna be. - Oh, exactly. - 32, 31, 33. - Yeah. Okay, and here is the give, and is without the little man this time? - Yes, it was. - Okay, and Hilliard, except. - He's gonna be real close to you. - He's gonna be very close. Did they move? - No, they're gonna have to measure. - It's close. - No, the one guy over here is saying move 'em. Okay, so they're gonna need the first down. Okay, so first and 10, again, they did exactly what they wanted to, and the ball is spotted at the Elkins 27 yard line. - Oh, they're chewed up. I get, I mean, you look at the totality of the third quarter, they've eaten up probably 10 to the third quarter by themselves. - A minute and a half to go in the quarter. And here's the big boy, he gets through the hole this time, and he's inside the 20 to about the 18 yard line. Woo! So, Clevenger with some big yardage. So, the ball's gonna be spotted at the 18 yard line. - No, no, I think so. - So first and 10 from the 18 yard line, 1/16 on a turning clock. So again, they get their first down, they're in the red zone, and their down clocks down to a minute and nine. - Hmm. - Well, I don't know what they're doing in, you know, again, a minute, five to go. - Oh, yeah. - They're gonna take this thing in the fourth. - Hey, here he is again, Clevenger. He's dragging people with him, and he gets inside the 15 to around the 13 yard line. Hmm. Man. So he's gonna pick up a good three and a half yards, and that's gonna bring up second down, and very manageable as the clock's down to 40 seconds to play in the third quarter. Well, he opens up 27.20. - They can pretty much take it down, though, about 12 seconds to go before they slap the ball here in the third quarter. - Yeah. And believe me, they know that they're well-versed. - Oh, yeah. - Okay. And here is the give, and the little guy, look at this. He almost got into the end zone, and he knocked down, and it's gonna be spotted at the four. - Whoo! - And they got the first down. - Yeah. - But the clock shouldn't run as soon as they reset the ball, and Liberty shouldn't be in any hurry of snap this. - Yeah. - Let it go to the fourth. - Yeah. The ball's at the right half mark at the four yard line, and Liberty has it first and gold. That's right. First and gold. - You know, they're gonna figure it right. - And the clock is a third. - Well, let's see. They ran up there very quickly. They are not gonna snap that. - Oh, they did. - They did. - Yes, they did. And they got a tight down. - Well, I'm in the booth, I guess. I thought for sure they're gonna carry that to the fourth quarter. - They carried that in. - We was hillyard again. - Yep. Okay. Wow. That's what I thought, Dee. - Well, I think everybody here thought that, and they caught up with like a defense sweep, and then ran up through there, ran up through the line. I can't talk now. But it's up to the line of scrimmage, and hurry up and snap it, and caught him off guard. The next thing you know, he was in the end zone. - Yeah. All right, here comes the two point conversion. - Now, this is huge right here. - Okay. And here is the give. Overnight at 99-WD&E. - What a game. Point after, no good. Elkins remains on top 27-26 as we begin fourth quarter action. - We talked about it. Every point is crucial. - Yes it is. - And now when you literally down one, now that Liberty Defense is going to have to find a way to stop Nick Bowers. On the opposite side, if I'm the Tigers, I'm thinking about maybe chewing up some of this clock as well and trying to put together a long drive underneath some of this clock. You push one in, again on the board, now Liberty's in a world of trouble. - Yes indeed. But I'll tell you what, you can't ask for a better first game of the year. - This is what you want, you know. - This is what you want. You don't want this every week. - If you're a player, you've gone through in the June flex practices, you've been in the weight room since spring, we've gotten through July, you've gotten through most of August, and you finally get here. - Yep, finally. - So, you know, it's, this is what you're trained for right here. Now we're about to see. - Here are these two good looking guys on the fixture. - I don't know, that's what he said. That's pretty handsome if I say so myself. - Oh Lord, I didn't even see you take that. - It is, no I'm good at it, see. - Yeah you are. - I'm back, I told you. - You're back. - I'm here, I'll see you. - Yeah. All right, what a game as we said before. Okay, so now Liberty will kick it off to Elkins, and we'll see what happens here. - Oh, Liberty defense has gotta find a way to shut down Bowers. - Yeah. Look at this, on side again. We've got a follow on it, Elkins. - Oh boy. - Everybody has to put far. - I don't know. It's set about here. - It has to put far. - Oh man. (crowd cheering) - Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness. One of our players missed it, didn't follow on it, and all of a sudden Liberty's there to take over. - Well, we talked about those first two jitters and being young, and that was the situation where the offside kick occurred. The defense didn't react at all. They just thought it was okay, and didn't even attempt to follow them until they seen Liberty players out there for the ball, and by that time it's too late. - Yeah, so now Liberty has the ball back again, and this is 11.58 to play in the fourth quarter, first and 10. - Yeah, again. - And Elkins 30. - Yeah. - It's the inside of Elkins territory, starts this drive, and Elkins just came off the field with a long drive from this Liberty offense. - Oh, okay, back to pass, and wow. - Oh, cool. - Incomplete. - Did he throw it? - Didn't throw it. Thought about it, but didn't throw it. - They hit after the play, and that could have gone either way. - Yeah. - Probably a good no call. - Yeah, I think 3%? - Yeah, I don't think it was anything malicious on either side or part of it. He was just trying to make a play, thinking the kid had the ball. - Okay, second and 10 from the Elkins 36, left hash mark, 11 minutes, 55 seconds to play in the ball game, 27, 26 Elkins. - No, that's how your defense is gonna have to dig deep. You just don't have the field for a long time. - Yeah, go on the field. - Now you're back on there again. - Okay, and here is the give. Oh, look at this. Look at this. I don't know where to go this time for Hilliard. It's he's hitting the back field. - Devon Holvers said I got this, boys. - Yep, he sure did. There's a loss on the play of what, 3? - Yeah, 50 lost 3. - So it's gonna bring up, wow, this is interesting. So now it's gonna bring up third down and 13. - Well, Liberty's kinda gotten away from what they normally do. I mean, they tried to come out with a pass on the first play, each other said a little screen pass. - Yeah, yeah. - That failed. - Second play is a loss of three. Now you're looking at third and 12, you know, with not a whole lot in the toolbox as far as the passing game. - All right. Third down back to basketball and pressure coming and it's over from incomplete pass. Now it's gonna be fourth down. Now this will be interesting to see what they do in fourth down, too. - Oh, you get your fourth down, you're in Elkins territory and down one. Here's another thing to think about, 2D. They use those timeouts early in the half. - They did. - So they're down to one timeout and so there's not gonna be a whole lot of time to think about this. - This is an interesting call from AJ Harmon. - It is. - Do you give Elkins the ball at the 38 yard line if you don't get this? Do you punt it and try to pin him inside the five? - Yeah. - What do you do? - Okay, fourth and 12. And they are going to... - They're gonna go. - Yeah, they're gonna go. Maybe a quick kick, you never know. Hey, here's the snap, it's a good one. Going long, they have a man open and it's missed, but a flag on the flag. - Glower, blower, blower. And I think if they call this pass interference, it's not even on the intended receiver. I think it was away from the play. - Oh my goodness. - There was another receiver streaking down the sidelines and I think the Tiger defender made contact. - Yeah. Mm-mm-mm. We talked about every play counts. This is a huge call. - Indeed. And Caden Dodd is injured on that play. Okay, so they're gonna walk off the penalty. - Yeah. - So again, everything happening the way Liberty once it's happened. - No, you had them fourth and 12. - Yeah, fourth and 12, yeah. - That's an appearance. You just gave them an automatic first down. - Yup. Okay, so the ball is going to be on the Elkin 22-yard line first and 10. Mm-mm-mm. 10.59 to play in the ball game. Look at this shotgun again. - Of course. Changing it up. - Yeah. The quarterback's gonna run it this time. And he is up the middle and he has some yard ages. He gets inside the 20-yard line to about the 18. So a nice pick up on the play to the quarterback. And that's gonna bring up second down and about six with 10.43 to play on a turning clock. 27.26 Elkins with the lead. But Liberty again in the red zone. - Coach Harmon's rolling the dice. You just quarterbacked the shotgun. I don't must be scared of a bad snap since you have a 50-yard game. - Oh, yeah, yeah. - Same here. - So far so good. - Well, look at this. - They're gonna line up in every move again. - Okay, here's the snap. Quarterback's keeping it this time on the left side. Look, he's got room. He's at the 15, 10, five. - And he's good. - Good. - Watch down Liberty. (crowd cheering) Wow. (laughs) 10-13. - And in belt. Put it in the hands in your quarterback. - Whoo! - Man, I'll throw you a half one. You just let him do the promise line. - Yes, sir. That's one. What was that? 17 yards out? - 17 yards. - Now, they go for two. If they can get this, now it's a seven-point lead again. If they can convert. - Yes. - So again, another big two-point conversion offense. - But they didn't run off as much clock as I thought they were. - They did run. - I mean, they didn't have far to go, but... - They didn't. Okay, now they're back in the stick-eye. To go for the two. And it is good. I think he's right past the marker there. Well, he's right at it. - He's right at it, yeah. - Either way, if he's gonna be third. - They said no. Well, wait a minute, now they're gonna measure it. - I'll say it. - Probably a no, Elkins calls Tom out. - Ooh. - Okay, so it is third down with 159 to play in the ball game. The ball is a 30-on yard line of Elkins. Ooh. - It's probably not a bad time out because-- - No, it's not. - It's third inches. - Yeah, but they also have two downs to get it. - All right, they do. But again, if you're a coach, what are you doing in this situation? I mean-- - You're gonna have to throw the house out of you. - You're gonna have to either use them now or you're gonna have to use them later and you're gonna second guess yourself a million times if they didn't go in your favor. - Yeah, call it. - I think that's a good call on his part. And hopefully you can put something together right here to get some penetration. And here you know, you can pop one out right here. - Oh, exactly. Anything can happen. - Oh, we've seen stranger things happen in this game already. - Well, not only that, you're giving your defense a chance to grab some water and get a breath because they've been on the field the second half a long time. So that's a smart time out. Let 'em get a breather. Let 'em cast their breath. Put something together and see if somehow you can possibly stop coming here and definitely right here. - Third down and one from the Elkins. 39 yard line, 159 to play in the ball game. 34-33, Liberty with the lead in the ball. And their crowd is really into this one now. - Listen to the quarterback keeper all the way, I believe. That's the best way to quarterback all the way. Every time he's a quarterback, he's on to his right side. - Yeah, true. - See if it happens again. Yeah, nope, not gonna happen yet because. - Whistles. And that quieted everyone. - Sure did. (laughing) - Okay. - What we got here? - I have no idea. They're talking about it. So they're gonna regroup. Maybe the clock may not have, the play clock may not have started. - I'm just not sure why Liberty's got an opportunity to be huddled though. - Yeah. - Talking about the play clock. - Yeah, somebody's down there just calling that. This is the word. - Yeah, that's what it is. Yeah. All right, third down and one. 1.59 to play in the ball game. - They could play it again, it's right here. - Oh, look at this. - Oh, let's see what they call it. - Yeah, look at this. - It's Liberty Gold. - Oh, look at that. - It's Liberty Gold and it all can go. The way Liberty's looking, it looks like Liberty went. - Liberty definitely went, but who went first? - Who went first? - Exactly. And it is Liberty. - Yes. - Oh my goodness. - So now instead of third and one, it's going to be third and sixth. - What a strange play on both sides. - Yes, sir. And Elka's crowd across from us, but boy, did they start shouting. - Well, it was a good reason. - And it's a decent crowd, also. - Now third inches just turn into third and five. - Yeah. - That changes your whole philosophy of what your play call is going to be. - You better believe it. - All right, here we go. And the big boy's got it. - It's not going to go down. - That's it. - Webinger, as he busts through people and it's going to be at the 35 yard line, first down Liberty at the Elka 35, leading 34-33, 153 to play in the ball game. - What a ball game. Both teams. - Yeah. - These kids are playing their absolute hearts out on both sides. It's been an absolute war. - Man, that's on the first off. - Yeah. - And now I think Coach wears down the one time out, so if you don't get something here, then it's pretty much all she wrote, as far as-- - Yeah. - They clock down now to 136. - It was being in your favor. - Oh, yeah. - Play clock down to two. And they, of course, get it off. But here's a little guy, look at this. And a few close to another first down. - That's a huge non-yard game by who is there. - Still your non-yard ball's going to be at the Elka 21 yard line with 125 until they set the play and then the clock's going to start again. - I hate to say it, but I think that was the dagger. - Could have been. So it's going to be second and one. And timeout is being called with 125 to play in the ball game. And don't forget, next week, the Tigers at home. And the Tigers will play host for the Lincoln Cougars. And you can catch all that on here, right here, on 98, 9WDME. - 645, free game, seven o'clock kickoff. But I'm sure Elka's would much prefer you to be at the field. - We would, too, for this one. - Need to bring that excitement, that atmosphere back. It needs to be wall to wall. It needs to be loud. These kids are working hard, man. - And Elka's brought a pretty good crowd with them tonight. - They did bring your e-crowd. I mean, there's people over there that don't have a dog on the fight. I mean, I'll see people over there whose kids are graduating a couple of years ago. They're still out here supporting the team. And that's what you need. - Oh, yeah. - You're getting that kind of a following on the road. You know, we do the same thing at home. It's also about culture. It's about changing the culture, not only in your program, but your community. And we're starting to see that. - Yeah. - Hi. - All forms. - Second down and one. - Big boy. - Big, big boy. - I bet they were total enough to jump outside of this. - Oh, you better believe. - Our full starter, isn't it? - Okay. And you're exactly right. And here's the big boy. And he's got the first down. So, it's 11 here. Gets the ball to the 24 yard line. So, it's gonna be first in 10. And the clock's at 119 until they shot the ball. And I don't know if Elkis has any more time, Elkis. - Oh. - Or else. - They are out. - Okay. - So, 119 to go. The clock starts. - Like the clock starts. - Take a name and, you know. - Oh, yeah. - If you're gonna lose anybody, you don't mind losing to this team, with the adversity that they face. - Yeah, yeah. - You know, again, this is the last year their existence as far as the school. They had, you know, the tragedy last season. - Yeah. - And they're gonna take a knee. - And they get to take a victory formation. - Good job, yeah. - Yeah, the season. - Victory formation. Congratulations. I mean, this is, and also congratulations to the Tigers. - Absolutely. - Both teams playing their hearts out tonight. - Nobody needs to put their head down. - No, no. - They're good, they're gracious, no. - Okay, and the clock's down now to 35 seconds. So, one more knee and next to do it. - I think it's out of here. - Yep. - Great effort by both teams. What a game. What a game. - Yes. - The same thing, victory formation. That's gonna do it. - Wow. - What a game. First game of the season. Hey, congratulations to both of these coaches. Both of these play, I mean, my goodness. - You couldn't have asked for a better game, dude. - You could know that, like I said, you don't ever wanna lose the game, but if you're gonna lose, you know, a few of those to beat kids, and what they're all there's dealt with, and all there's going through in the adversity. - Yeah. - And you know what, the Tigers, they'll be back. I promise you, next Friday night, you'll be tired of that, they'll be ready to go, and it'll be our time to get that home victory. So, hop on out. We're still shutting down, we're sitting down. - That's right. - Get out here for these boys and support 'em, and let's bring that same energy that the Liberty Cup brought tonight. Okay, final score, 34, 33, Liberty, with the home victory over the Elken Tigers, and we'll be back after these messages on 98-9 WDNA. - Are you in need of top quality building products for your next project? And we do have a few interesting things that Domania wants to talk to you about. - Well, I won't give you the actual stats, since we missed a little bit at the beginning, but kudos to these players on both teams. - Oh, yeah. - A very, very balanced running attack from Liberty. I mean, they had three guys and putting the quarterback out there, have fun, Quentin Hilliard and Landon Clevinger that were way over 70 yards apiece. Not to mention, put the ball in the end zone quite a few times as well. And then you look at the Elkins side of things. I had Nick Bauer somewhere around 195 yards, and that's just what I tracked. I'm pretty sure he was over the 200 marks, so he hit the 200 mark, you know, for the first game of the season, which is a huge number. - Oh, yeah. - You know, Kayden Phillips came out and had two touchdowns early in that first quarter. So there's a lot of positives there. I mean, it's a new offense, you gotta get used to it. It's a new philosophy. You know, the running attack was definitely there. We didn't throw a pass, but I'm sure we'll start to see that, you know, down the road a little bit. But, you know, kudos to both teams for what they did, offensively, you know, and just the atmosphere and the nerves and everything else, you know. - And, you know, both young teams too. I mean-- - Very young, that's very young. And unfortunately for Liberty, this will be their last season. But, you know, for the Tigers, there's a lot to build on. I mean, there's a lot of enthusiasm. There's a lot of good things happening. So anyhow, you want to see the good things happen? Why don't you come on to Elkins Stadium next Friday night where Elkins and Lincoln will battle 745-- Oh, 745. 645, pregame, 7 o'clock will be the kickoff. And we thank you for listening to us.
