(upbeat music) It's August 30th and this is your Michigan Minute. Today in 1840, a future Detroit mayor and Michigan governor was born. Hazen Pingree was immensely popular in the late 1800s, a champion of public owned utilities and even when times grew tough nationwide, he made open lots in Detroit, open and free to Detroiters to create small farming lots. In a 1999 survey of historic scholars, they ranked Hazen Pingree as the fourth best mayor in American history. Also today in 1905 in Detroit, an 18-year-old hit the baseball diamond for the first time. He threw right-handed, bad at left-handed and would change the game in his 24 years as a Detroit tiger. A happy anniversary to the first game of baseball's first millionaire, not to mention inaugural baseball hall of fame inductee in 1936, Ty Cobb's first professional game today in 1905. And that's your Michigan Minute. (upbeat music) (upbeat music)
