It's August 29th, and this is your Michigan Minute. He is a jazz musician who had the guts to say no to Miles Davis. He was born today in 1940 into Troyt, Michigan. Benny Mopin first heard Miles in the 1950s on the jukebox of the soda shop across the street from his Detroit High School and made jazz his life. In 1970, the sometimes temperamental Miles Davis asked Mopin to permanently join his band, but Benny had already signed with trumpeter Lee Morgan and declined the offer, which made Davis hang up on Benny. But the respect was still there, and Mopin appeared on four later albums by Davis, including the seminal "Bitch's Brew" playing bass clarinet. While also working with the likes of Sonny Rollins and Herbie Hancock, Mopin has also released six solo albums of his own, including "The Jewel in the Lotus." And that is your Michigan Minute.
