Michigan Bans Hitchhiking on Freeways | August 28

Michigan passed a law banning hitchhiking and bicycles on the Interstate Highway System, nearly a decade after the system's enactment. 8th August 28th, and this is your Michigan Minute. Well, it was nearly a decade after the interstate highway system became enacted, but today in 1964, the state of Michigan passed the law, which made both hitchhiking and bicycles illegal to be operated while on the freeway system. And today, after being made the Secretary of the Territory of Michigan by President Andrew Jackson, a series of events unfolded, which effectively made the 19-year-old Stephen's T. Mason the acting governor of the Territory of Michigan, however, the dispute over who the infamous Toledo Strip belonged to made President Jackson afraid of losing Ohio's votes. So he removed the young Mason on this day in 1835 and made John Horner the replacement. But Michiganders blatantly ignored him, and two months later would vote Stephen's T. Mason as the first official governor of that brand new state of Michigan. And that is your Michigan Minute.
