U of M Tries To Absorb The Future MSU | June 16

1855: University of Michigan President Harry Tappan aimed to persuade the Michigan Legislature to bring the establishment of an agricultural college within the umbrella of the University of Michigan. But John C. Holmes, secretary of the Michigan State Agricultural Society, countered Tappan's proposal, arguing that young farmers wouldn't receive adequate attention within the existing university in Ann Arbor. The legislature agreed with Holmes, making the future MSU an institution separate from the U of M.
