U of M Honors Marian Anderson and Book Ban Overturned | June 12

1959: Famed African-American contralto Marian Anderson was awarded an honorary music degree from the University of Michigan, making her the first woman and first Black commencement speaker for Michigan's graduation ceremony. 1972: The Michigan Court of Appeals overturned a ruling that banned Kurt Vonnegut's novel "Slaughterhouse Five" from Oakland County schools, affirming the importance of First Amendment rights.
