1976: President Gerald Ford signs "An American Promise," terminating Executive Order 9066 and addressing the wartime internment of Japanese Americans. 1940: Detroit-born William Robinson, known as Smokey Robinson, celebrates his birthday. The Motown legend led the Miracles and later found success as a solo artist, earning a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
