Welcome in to the Cap and G, good morning show on ESPN 1,000. And we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. We have Shea. We've got Jay Moore. We've got you for a three-hour ride. On this deal breakers, Thursday, with open phone lines for you. 3, 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, 7, 7, 6 star phone number. And Cap, I know that you have seen this on your social media. And it's been talked about this week as we get ready for the Bears and the Texans. Of course, our coverage is all day Sunday right here on the home of the Bears. ESPN 1,000. We've heard people talk about Caleb Williams and the offense. Of course, there's been a lot of hype around Caleb Williams leading into his time with the Chicago Bears because, after all, I mean, he's the number one draft pick. And there's going to be a big spotlight on him and the Bears. Bears are on hard docs. Everyone is focused on the Bears to see what will happen with this team. But I know that you see what I see when, and some of the calls have trickled in here from time to time, that are not sure about what they see when it comes to the offense. Because as much as we say, hey, Ryan Polls is trying to build this thing to last. People, and rightfully so, look back at the quarterback situation. This goes, yes, yes. In 2021, you told me about Fields. Yes, yes. In 2017, you told me about Trubisky. Yes, yes. You told me in 2009 about Cutler. Yes, you told me about Orton and Greasy and Grossman and Hutchinson and Cordell Stewart and Eric Kramer and Shane Matthews and on and on and on. Those are supposed to be the guide to lead us for the next decade to lead us to the Promise Land. And they say, well, how is this different with Caleb Williams? And already through week one, there's panic. People have a right cap to say, hey, I've seen it all before. But again, you have to understand that when you're a rookie, you don't get it right away. And for Caleb Williams, it's going to be a process. I think more positive and negative, but he's going to learn on the job. It's not like Cutler, it's not like Cordell Stewart. To me, it's a young man that played at a high level, played good college football, and he's going to learn. It's never going to be perfect, but I think it's going to be better than what we saw for sure. I thought he was magnificent at the podium. After the game, when you heard him here on ESPN 1000, we get him before anybody. So it says raw and real as you're going to get. You get him an eberfluous before they talk to the, what I like to call, in honor of the late Chad Copic. The pen and mic club, they're all standing there waiting, men and women. He is real, he is honest, and then you hear him yesterday and he's had a chance to watch the film and go through practice and process everything that he is experiencing as a 22-year-old young man who has the weight of the world on his shoulders because this is a football town. I thought he was outstanding. From the first interview on the radio to the interview yesterday in front of the media, that dude gets it. That dude wants this pressure. That dude is going to get better. And he's idiots that are on Twitter that I'm looking at and I'm calling you all out that are idiots out there. Oh, he sucked, man. He was terrible. Just in this and you guys do it, they were so rough. Shut up. And I hate that term. You sound idiotic in a city where we've never had a freaking quarterback in our lifetime. Have we had one? None. The last guy to make all-pro as a bear, Johnny Loujack in 1950. The best quarterback in bear's history? That was Sid Luckman drafted in 1939, a converted running back into the new T formation. Stop. Let this kid freaking play. Let him develop. Stop with this first take nonsense. Oh, played bad. One game. He stinks. Move on. We should have got CJ Stroud. No, this is the guy. So some thoughts from Caleb Williams yesterday. Some things he needs to improve on from week one to week two. Yeah, I would say the drops. Sometimes I rush my drop a little bit. You know, not needing to. You know, one specific route that I can think of is Rome. I think it was a 10-yard route right over the ball. And I rushed my drop and then tried to juice it in there a little bit and missed. You know, I didn't need to just try to hair up and get the ball to him. Getting his hands as fast as possible so he can make magic and do what he does. And so, you know, just making sure, you know, trusting the drop, trusting the region. Things like that and getting through him. You know, I'd say that's probably the biggest thing that I'm focusing on. And then, you know, my finishes on my play fakes or anything like that. I think that when you take a look at the Chicago Bears or any team in week one, if you feel like you didn't get the results you wanted, then you probably should turn it off the next 17 weeks. Just turn it off because if you're not going to like, if you don't like what you saw in week one, if you think that's all you're going to see, then, you know, it's for your mental health. Just don't watch. You want to, you can, you can talk about what is a fact. And that is in week one, Caleb Williams and the offense did not play well. When you're 30th in completion percentage, when you're 27th in passer rating, when you're 30th in expected point added per attempt, those things are true that Caleb Williams, the offense, struggle. There's no question. But again, the Bears won the football game. And what you're rooting for is for clearly an improvement. It will never be that bad all season. It was bad on Sunday, but the idea that, well, he sucks because you didn't get what you wanted as a Bears fan, then stop watching it. I'll be watching it because I understand it's a process. And I know people tuned in for game week cap. We've been talking about it all summer, but some people by just helicopter and it's like, all right, let me turn back on a cap and see what they got to say about the Chicago Bears. But we talked about it all summer. It's going to be a process from Shane Waldron to Caleb Williams to the offensive line. It's going to take time because there's a lot of new moving parts. And it doesn't work like that in week one. I'm not panicking about week one. Week two, maybe the Bears are not going to play well. But at some point, it's going to be able to click and gel. Caleb Williams, I think, is a good enough quarterback. And Shane Waldron is a good enough offensive coordinator for it to work. But just not when you want it. I think he's going to happen this year. So I went back. I was talking with my bro. And he said, go back and look at the box scores because he did. It's how he spends his lunch. He's a doctor. But when he's got a break to eat his. Whatever it is that healthy man eats. And he sat down. He said, I want you to go back and look at the box scores for the first two games the Texans played a year ago. Love the brother next to you. That's exactly right. You go back and look at CJ Stroud's numbers. He wasn't great. They lost their first two. Pacerating last year. Now he put up some decent yards, 242 in the first game. But he had a Pacerating of 78. He got sacked five times for 46 yards. He was not outstanding by any means. If you look at the first two games, they're all in two. Go back because I did. Pull up the Houston papers. Panic. Oh, here we go again. Oh, and two. The Chronicle. Yeah. And guess what? They ended up in the playoffs. Yes. Yes. So can we just let the kid develop once all the people that are know it all is about quarterback play? None of us have seen one in our town. None. So can we please just let this kid develop? If I heard he wasn't working hard, be a concern. If I heard that he was not able to read a defense, be a concern. None of that's true. Talk to his teammates. They said, dude, the guy's work ethic is off the chain. Phenomenal. Ability to go through his reads and progressions and all that. Outstanding. Best we've seen. He's a rookie in the national football league going up against angry older men. I mean, come on, man. What are we doing? Let's go. Well, I think that that mentality about Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears overall is the equivalent of you being able to go to the ballot box. Vote out without ever older men that you didn't like. New Aldermen's in. I'm voting for this guy. You know why? Because this pothole has been in my neighborhood for three years. Right. And you know what? This new Aldermen is going to make it happen. I'm going to finally get this pothole covered and I'm not going to damage my car. So the election day happens as a new Aldermen. And the next day you open up the drapes and that hole is still there. Well, I voted that other guy out. But how come that hole is still there? Because the Aldermen doesn't know the holes there and he'll eventually get to it. But there's a process cap. Right. Just because you wanted something new other than Justin Fields doesn't mean that your pothole is going to be covered the next day or the first game of the season. That's my point. Exactly right. You've used that analogy before and I always smile when you use it. It makes me laugh. Because it's true. Right. You know, like I want this president out. Okay. All right. So now you have a new president in. Whoa, whoa, whoa. How come nothing's changed? The first place is still $4. How come I'm still at the part because it's the first day? And it's a process to get to where you want to be. Correct. That's why. Correct. That's why. That is exactly correct. So, you know, again, I'm super excited for Sunday night football. I'm not convinced they're going to win the game. But I am convinced they're going to compete and it's going to be a really cool part of the process because what would he gain playing the Carolina Panthers here versus we're going on the road to Houston, man. You got your hands full. You're going to get your head kicked in potentially by Will Anderson and Daniel Hunter. Like there are some dudes on that defense now. And our defense, you have to deal with Stroud and Nikko Collins and Tank Dell, adult and shields and Joe Nixon and Laramie Tunsel on that offense. Look out now. That's a good team. Yes. Let's go. I know we're focused on the NFC North, however, there's other opponents too. It's all new to Caleb. All of it. Agree. There are no tag days for Caleb Williams. There are no days off because it's all new. It's all NFL talent. Yeah. We don't think much of the Titans as far as where they're going for this upcoming season, where they have dudes, Houston, Texas playoff team, they've got dudes. Across the board in this schedule, Caleb Williams is going to have to be able to adjust. It's not the Pac-12 anymore, you know, this is new players and new teams as he's never seen before. Now, of course, cap also that's important is the offense according to Shane Waldron. And there's some criticism that I think is fair. Something I think is unfair with Shane Waldron as far as his usage of some players. However, what's important is the relationship between Caleb Williams and Shane Waldron? Us figuring out exactly, you know, what works best with, you know, whether our offense alignment, you know, in our run game, our passing, or, you know, whether we have, you know, whether we spread it out, whether we pack it in tight, whether we stack, whether we get, you know, three Titans in the game, whether we have, you know, two bags, three bags, you know, whatever case may be, just figuring out what works best for that week, but also works best with our offense and being able to go out there and execute smoothly, especially going, you know, to a playoff team last year and going to their stadium and having to go execute, you know, early in the season and starting fast and going out there and, you know, trying to win the game. Yeah. Caleb's talking about Shane Waldron in the offensive coordinator. Yeah. I didn't like that Cole Comette didn't get as much usage as I thought he should. I didn't like that. Mercedes Lewis, when we're trying to run the football, that guy at the point of attack, that's why he's here. He's not here because he's a downfield threat anymore. He's 40 years old. That dude can block. Why was he not a wise Gerald ever getting all the run? Not a great blocker, obviously a pretty good repasse catcher, and that's why he was brought in as a weapon. Why did we quit running the ball? Run the football downhill, man. Let's go. I understand it was on the other side, and I think that we'll probably see more of that in this game against the Texans and more success actually from running the football. Just keep in mind the running game was not as effective as we would have liked. It was what Cap said, leading into the game against the Titans that the bear should run the football effectively. So you take away the two kneel downs by Williams at the end of the game and the Bears had 86 yards on 20 rushes. It's not bad, but then again, it was about that 20 yard run for DeAndre Swift. You take that away. It's 10 carries for what, 20 yards? I mean, he was at 10 for 30, so it's 10 for 10. Is that the number? 10 carries for 30 yards. He had that 20 yard run. He took the 20 yard nine for nine for 10, stuff like that, something like that, yes. But here's something we have not brought up though, Cap. Okay, so the running game was not as good as we thought it should be, not as potent as it should be. But I like that the offense was utilizing, not just Swift, but also Vales Jones and DJ Moore. I love that end around 14 yards for DJ Moore. Pretty good. Forget it. Get the ball in his hands, okay? Get the ball in his hands. Yesterday, there was no Keenan Allen at practice. He's dealing with a bit of a foot thing. But Matt Iberfus was pretty quick to say, it's a veteran thing. He's been in the Pro Bowl six times. Just manage him physically. Let's go. That's a nice way of saying he's old. He's old by football, by football standards, he's old. He's going to need a lot of those veteran days, Cap. It is what it is. We're trying to get him as close to 18 games as possible. I don't think it's going to be 18 because it's Keenan Allen. He came up gimpy in the game like, Oh God, is he going to be okay? Yeah, saw that in the back of the end zone and then still going towards the stand. I'm like, Oh God, is that a hamstring already? Game one. But I don't think it was. I think it's just, he's old. So three, one, let's open the phone line, Shay, three, one, two, three, three, two, ESPN, three, three, two, three, seven, seven, six is our telephone number. The question we have on the table for you this morning is bears offense, panic or patience? How do you feel this morning going into the game against the Texans? Are you panicked or are you patient or somewhere in between when it comes to the bears' offense? You know, there comes some thoughts from Cole commit. You just talk about Cole commit, not being utilized a lot. He had a thought about that. He did. He talked about it on his own 85 V log. So yeah. So we'll talk about that and get your phone calls in here. Panic or patience when it comes to the bears' offense on cap and J hood. This is cap and J hood, they beat in the traffic commute. So you don't have to. On ESPN Chicago. Relax yourself and enjoy the cap and J hood morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Here's hoping that you have a great Thursday, it's a deal breakers Thursday here on cap and J hood will hear from Tom Thayer coming up at nine o'clock, the Super Bowl champion and color analysts for the bears. But right now we're talking about panic or patience when it comes to the bears' offense. Just your gut feeling 3 1 2 3 3 2 3 7 7 6 our phone number. If you've been listening to us even for a minute, you know that cap and I understand that it just doesn't happen sonically. You know, what we want and we want Caleb Williams to be all world. We want him to be in the MVP conversation. We want the bears to have a long playoff run. We want to see the bears in the Super Bowl. But all of that is not going to happen yesterday. All that's not going to happen all this year. The hope is, is that things start to turn in the right direction. It will. The numbers are what they are. We can't deny them cap, but there's going to be a process. I've been saying this all summer, you've got to be able to get the OC and the head coach and the offensive line and everything else that goes with the offense on the same page. Yeah. And you've got to have what I've always and wattle has taught me this over the years because he's so smart about balance, man. We've got to have balance. Yes, I want to see a cool 65 yard touchdown pass down the field. That's awesome. Awesome. Love to see it. I also want to see. Stay wedded to the run four yards, three yards, four yards, two yards. Just keep hammering away and I thought we got away from that last week, we did. This is a coordinator cap. Go ahead. You used to it. The ball is going to be in the air. So much as we admire the Chargers and the Lions, specifically the Lions, but we always know Jim was always been big potatoes. Jim Harbaugh has always been wherever he's been, San Francisco with the RPOs, Michigan to a national championship. It just, you know, San Diego State, he's always been that. Run the football first. That's how he grew up in the inside of the football business. Played that way in college. Played that way for Dica. And so, as much as we like that kind of football, the running game to set up the pass, my hope is that there's balance there too, as he just laid out in the offense, running the football and passing it. Yeah. And the best way to have a chance Sunday is to keep their offense off the field. All right. Let's go to the phone lines and talk to you. 312-332-3776 our phone number, Q from the south side on Captain Jay Hood, Q good morning. Good morning, Jay. Good morning, Cap. Yeah. I just want to say I'm a little bit panicked with Caleb, like I said, because I went back and watched the R22, and I went and watched the replay with Chase Daniels, and if you look at it, Caleb, you should have had no problem in that game. The P-head guys wide open from DJ Moore, he literally should have ended that game with about three to four touchdowns, if not more yards than what he had. But I know he's a rookie, but like I said, I just hope he's getting better at it because like I said, DJ Moore, Tina, he was killing them guys in that game, but like I said, but he just didn't, I don't know if he, you know, did see him off-hand or maybe he was thinking a lot like you guys said, but I'm just hoping he'd get better in the next game because like I said, you know, it's not going to get any easier, but like I said, he's going to get a less than secondary than what they were going to get, uh, against the tight. And now we're going to see if he can recognize the advantages that you might have. He's got to be able to know you're right. Different type of offense, different type of team, now can he recognize it? Correct. And you know, he had a lot of heat on him. It's not as though he's getting sacked a billion times, but boy, they were getting interior pressure. Big time. Yeah. Big time. All right. Q, we appreciate your telephone call. Now he leaves light open three, one, two, three, two, three, seven, seven, six is our telephone number. Derrick and Brooklyn, New York, listening on the ESPN Chicago app is with the guy. Derrick, good morning. Yo, cap hoodie. Good morning. How y'all doing? What's up, brother? Yeah. Let me, let me say this. We dealing with a rookie quarterback who I know as a best fan and as a bear fan myself, we want the team to do well. But like McCasky, even McCasky George said he's giving Kayla patience. We have to give this young man patience. He was playing and trying to camp against the bears. They even though they were showing him different looks and things like that, you get to a point where you're playing against the same dudes every day, you're going to get a feel of what they're going to do. Now he's actually playing against other teams that puts different defensive schemes there. So he's learning on the fly as well. Me, myself, as a best fan, I'm willing to give this man patience and with all this nonsense about panic and like the last guy who called, I'm not going to knock what he said, but at the same time, dude, he's a rookie. He's learning on the fly and against the Houston defense, the only DB I would think that might give a little trouble is I think his name is stingly or something like that. I don't know if I'm saying his name correctly, but they're not really known for being a good team for intercepting aboard and more of a pass rushing team. So if this dude Shelton can give my man a chance to drop back and get the ball off and he can hold his block, the stats from last week game with a little bit better. Now he's probably still would have had a so-called not great game, but his stat-wise as far as the passing game would have been a little bit better, but the line has to hold up, man. They got to do it. Both parties have to do their part. The line has to hold up and the ball has to get out 2.5, 6, 7 seconds. Listen. Oh, you're correct. One last thing. One last thing. This is a message to Ryan Post. Ryan Post, call the Cleveland Browns, go after Miles, man. We need that dude. We need Miles Garrett. Yeah. I looked it up. His dead cap hit is so massive. I don't think they could do that right now. That's the problem. You can guarantee the Super Bowl sure, but that's not a guarantee, that's a lot of money. I would love to get Miles Garrett and they're going to have issues if they're trying to get out of that to Sean Watson contract, I don't think they're going to be able to. But holy cow, man, you look at Miles Garrett's contract. His dead cap hit is insane. They can't move him right now. We're talking about the Bears on the Captain Jay Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. As promised, Cole Comette gave his thoughts about the lack of reps that he had Sunday against the Titans. You know, I'm a guy. Obviously, I view myself as a top tight in this league. I think I've shown that over the past couple of seasons and I feel like I'm at a point in my career now where I can be one of the very best in the league. You know, this is the best I felt coming into a camp. This is the best in shape I've been and, you know, I stand by the stuff that I've been putting on tape throughout the preseason and practice, you know, and even in the game the other day. So, you know, that being said, like, I can only control what I can control. You know what I mean? And, you know, that's that's kind of how I have to go about it. You know, my everyone here has an ego and I think, you know, I have an ego, you have an ego, you know, everyone's got an ego in our locker room and it's just about how you manage it. And it's important to always check your ego at the door when you walk in the building. And for me, that's always about doing what's asking me. And so if it means, hey, you know, Cole, you're only going to be playing 10 to 15 snaps this game. Cole, we need you to play 50 snaps this game. Cole, we need you to play every single snaps this game. Cole, we need you to do some special team reps, like, whatever that is, that's what I got to do for this team and that's what I'm about as a player. And I don't have to be happy with those decisions, but at the end of the day, I have to take care of my business and it's important to always check your ego at the door and do what's asked you. And at the end of the day, put your put good and I feel like I've been doing that. And, you know, it's week one and, you know, we got things that we got to work through, but, you know, I'm confident it'll get, it'll get situated. And but like I said, I feel good with where I'm at. And at the end of the day, I can only control what I can control. Cole, commit. That's all fair. That is such a mature, classy response. And I thought the end part where he said, I don't have to be happy about it, but I got to take care of my business, my job. And if that special teams, if that's less snaps, more every snap, let's go. Yeah. And you can get more with him. The 85 with Cole, commit on YouTube. Super cool. I mean, a great perspective, sound like a veteran. Great. Understand. I love that, dude. He's not. He doesn't feel like he's left behind all that stuff because he knows he'll get his. Yes. This is Shane Waldron finding out who we can utilize, who we can depend on, especially down the field blocking, because that's important. Gotta be able to block, but also be able to be a safety valve for this young quarterback Caleb Williams. Yeah. Gurney. Here's James on cap and Jhood. James. Good morning. Good morning, fellas. How you been a long time? No talk. How's everything, James? Everything is great. My friend. Everything is great. But hey, so let's look at this way. Expectations, excitement, a little bit of trauma to me, right? Expectations we had, which are, you guys talked about it all. I thought you know, all I listened to is you and the excitement, but the expectations of Caleb is, I have patience with him, but there's a little bit of traumas of what we saw because we see it all the time. So you got 76, 65, and 64/71 had a tough game, and there is a little bit of panic. They're not a little bit of trauma, because what we witnessed now, this week, 70 and 58 are going to be tempted. They're going to be really challenged. So I'm going to have patience with 18, and you said the best hoodie, balls, and throws football. I can't remember it off the top of my head, but we're going to see a lot more pass, but Cap, you mentioned it before, the first three plays in the game was 6, 4, 3, they just, they abandoned the running game for a lot of pressure on Caleb. Yeah. I'm not going to be panicked, Jeff, but there's a little bit of trauma, guys, because this is, don't tell me for a second that he wasn't good, thank God you guys are saying he just wasn't good. He was awful. It was frustrating, because the expectations were, but let's be honest that, I mean, Waldron needs a cold to be on the field, so we just got up, I don't know, I would expect a little bit more from Waldron. I think my expectations to him are a little bit too high too, so we'll see, but I don't want to call it panic, but there's trauma. We witnessed this stuff for a really long time. So we'll see, let's see positive, I just, I don't know if they're going to win, I just don't want to see them to get their blood work, because lately, every time we've been late, in the last few years, every time we went up to a really contending team, we got our bloods kicked. That's why I don't want to see this care of our bloods, but then there will be a little bit of panic. So let's have some patience, but hey, trauma is real, man, life and even in sports. I appreciate the phone call, I have a seat belt on when you watch Houston, by the way. Put your seat belt on. They're good, man. You're talking about bearish trauma. That's a team that was in a playoff that came out of nowhere last year. O and two, just saying, go back and read the article. O and two. I was like, here we go again, even though Stroud, I think his second game, he threw for 300 and whatever, I mean, a big, big day, but they were O and two and everyone down there thought, yeah, another bad season. And guess what? They made the playoffs. Three, one, two, three, three, two, three, seven, seven, six is our phone number. If you're on hold, you will be on the air, panic or patience when it comes to the bears. From the home of the bears, ESPN 1,000, good morning, and welcome in to the Captain J Good morning show on ESPN 1,000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. You've got deal breakthroughs coming up at 835 on the deal breakers Thursday, but first shot or no shot here is Shane Orling. Shane. Good morning, boys. On a Thursday after a couple of days off football back tonight, dolphins and bills on Amazon. Very exciting. That is. How you feeling? Man, I'm feeling great, man. Think about this. Thursday night football, Shay, Arizona State, Texas State, that's going to be outstanding off the chain. Over under 60. I'm not done. 60 and a half is the total. What a great game. Look at four to Thursday football. Who Arizona State and Texas State tonight? Well, Thursday football is that why would a penitentiary be playing Arizona State? Because state pen respect the Bobcats. They get a right to have a field of team pal. Yeah, guess what? It's Buffalo and Miami that nonsensical mini college game. No, I don't know what you're talking about. Are you asking me about? It's going to be a great night for football. That just told you why it would be Arizona State, Texas State. Ah, Shay. What are the sharps saying about that game? Give me a little something on that. Take them away. Take the Bobcats. Really? Yep. Oh, I heard it. I'm loading up on Arizona State. That means her med works really ruin that program. That's what that sounds like to me. You've been gone for a while, hadn't you? There's a reason. Two years, I think. It's tough, though. He left a trail behind, brother. Let me tell you. This is going to be fun. Thursday Night Football, followed by Northwestern State in South Alabama. Thursday Night Football. Fantastic. It is Buffalo Bills at the Miami Dolphins. You loot it. On Sunday. I look forward to it. No. Right now. It's tonight. On Amazon. Yeah, Amazon. And your friend is going to be broadcasting on the game. Who's that? You're better than that. Who? Albert Breer. Oh, he's not in the booth, he's kind of a side, kind of a reporter type, isn't he? He's the insider. I'll find out what's going on at halftime. All right. Buffalo wins outright, by the way. Okay. Is that right, Jay? I'm going to tease it, but yeah, Buffalo's the side I like. All right. See you guys are on the same page. That's what you said. I just told you Moneyline winner. They're getting two and a half. I don't even need it. Is that right, Jay? Does he not need it? What's the matter? I guess it's a night game. There won't be any sun for Buffalo to Wilton down in Miami. Okay. That's fortunate. There you have it. It's going to be fun. Looking forward to Thursday night football. Eventually, I'll get around to Amazon. All right. We turn now to shade. All right. Dan Wiederer talked to Darryl Taylor who had a fantastic debut game against Tennessee. Couple sacks, a bunch of tackles, and he asked Darryl Taylor what he learned about his new Chicago Bears team. Taylor said, quote, I learned this team is resilient as bleep. I'm sorry that I'm saying that, but I have to. Nobody blinked an eye. Any sudden change moment. We were ready to attack an expletive filled answer about how resilient the Chicago Bears defenses shot or no shot. This is coaching about behalf of home on behalf of Matt Eberfluis and the defense. Oh, wow. Yeah, I would say that that's coaching. That's a shot cap. Also veteran players didn't know what the hell they're doing led by Montez Sweatt. Correct. But I do. Eberfluis absolutely gets credit that they held that thing together and they were able to find a way in the second half to overcome. So whether it was as you like what you saw, adjustments, whether it was the coach keeping everyone focused, it worked and he gets the credit. It's like when the Bulls dominate in the 90s, yeah, I'd love to coach Jordan and Pippin and Rodman and all these different dudes, but Phil deserves his share of credit. You would have been Doug Collins. So in that situation, wow, a wild dog, no, I love Doug too, but you would get all these technical files trying to defend your guys. You would have been thrown out of the lead. I would not have been as calm as Phil. No question. That's the question. That's what I'd be. You would have been Doug. Correct. You're trying to fight everybody because you're for a call. That's what you'd be because you're trying to defend your players. You don't want to get screwed. Correct. And they're like, all right, Cap, that'll be all we'll just get yourself another job. That's it. Jordan can't keep dealing with this craziness that you and your sideline demeanor. I will say that's the shot, Shay, and the reason why is because I will give Matt Eberfluis full credit for the turnaround, the defense last year. This is with Montez sweat, however, because Matt Eberfluis had to be able to be the defense of coordinator last year because of the fallout of said Alan Williams, is that with the DC last year? Yeah, that was. So that's that's why I will give him full credit for what's happening now with the defense. He's got his paws all over it. So I totally understand. So absolutely I give him full credit for that. I get the player's credit, but also give Eberfluis credit to look what happened last year. Look what's happening this year. I mean, look, you can have talent and still be a bad unit too. This defense just particularly they seem to have an attitude and it seems like the culture of allowing these guys to be themselves and play the way they want to play like sweat talked about being able to play in different positions and do what he wants to do. I think that that is coaching that this the culture in the attitude that this defense operates with is a credit to Eberfluis like Robert Salah, right? Have a lot of guys on defense. Yeah, I mean, that's a perfect example because boy, if you have that much talent on your defense and you just get gushed on the ground, that is also coaching. Yep. Yep. Robert Salah. All right, Shane. All right. Caleb Williams took full accountability for the way the offense looked in the first game. Said he missed four or five throws. He hits and practice all the time. I think everybody can agree that part of it is true. He also said his drop back was rushed. There was a throat aroma dunes where he felt like he was getting to his final step of his drop too quickly. The timing was all off. I saw a lot of people talking about Caleb saying he was a little nervous, looked like he was playing a little bit scared. The game was a bit quicker for him than he expected. I kind of felt like that's all ridiculous. Shot or no shot, Caleb played poorly week one because there was a lot of adrenaline for his first start. That's a shot. Yeah, absolutely. That's a shot. Absolutely. That's a shot. You can't blame him. Since you're a little kid, you dream of being the top pick and then running out of the tunnel and being the field general, the captain of your team. He's got that. Yeah, he was over-ent. Okay. We've got through it. We found a way to win a football game. Now let's go. Yeah. I'm sure he was taken aback by like, boy, I stink so we're going to lose the game and the defense and we'll love us found a way for the Bears to win the football game. So that happens, and of course, we're armed with the numbers that you and Shay have given about rookie quarterbacks, their first game, what it looks like, and it's overwhelming that the rookie quarterback fails or the offense or the team fails. So when it comes to Caleb Williams, he'll find a way to get it right. He says he's never nervous. He may not have been nervous on Sunday, but I'm sure that he was surprised at how fast the defense is coming off that line, off the line of scrimmage. He had to be like, yeah, I'll just go backwards here 10 and I'll be able to get 10 yards. No. How about minus 19? Yeah. There's just no way for you to throw it away. Those guys are right on top of you. It's like, you had to take that sack, unfortunately. Hopefully that won't happen again. Hopefully. 19 minus 19. Yeah. That's a tough spot. Yeah. Take the sack earlier. Yeah. And the reason, well, that for sure, or throw the ball away, like if you're going to roll out, stop doing the loopy loops and taking yourself further out. Did you ever get out of the tackle box? Well, that's what I'm saying. Instead of doing all those loopy loops, just run to the sideline and get rid of the football. Look, I could see nervousness if he looked a little bit more like bonyx looked with some duck passes off his back foot thrown into rough situations, just didn't look like that to me. Caleb was dropping back and ripping the ball 100 miles an hour. Didn't have a lot of touch on any of his passes. It felt more to me like a guy who was just way over ramped for his debut and trying to do too much. All right. What else do we have? What do Jerry Reinsdorf finally released a statement about the White Sox historically bad season as they sit just five losses away from tying the American League record for an aptitude. Reinsdorf in his statement said everyone in the organization is extremely unhappy. This has been a quote painful season, but they didn't get here overnight. They can't fix it overnight and he once again cited the changes made in the front office last year to build a quote foundation for future success, which to me reads like he is still blaming Rick and Kenny for what's going on on the South side. Shutter no shot. The blame for this season lies solely with Jerry Reinsdorf. 1000% shot. It's on Jerry Reinsdorf. If he wants someone to blame, he can go to a Scottsdale home, open up one of the doors in his palatial estate and look in a mirror. You want to blame somebody blame yourself. Your loyalty is great. There are people that are working in an organization that's been there for decades. And that's great. But when it comes to the baseball team in the front office, loyalty has to you can't be loyal to a fault. You just can't do that. When you see the organization going in the wrong direction, there's time for change. Sports has always been that way. You don't have guys that are in the front office as a GM in there for years and years and years, just in a bunch of losses and a bunch of ineptitude. This is 1000% on Jerry Reinsdorf. And by the way, as much as he's been great as far as winning a World Series championship for my Chicago White Sox and six tiles in eight years, you also wear on your resume 114 losses at this point. And on the way to be the worst team in Major League Baseball, you could stick it. At some point, you got to be able to take care of us, the fan. And guess what, Cap, it's never been about us. It's never been about us because if it was about us as the fan, you would do right by the White Sox fan, but it's never been about us. It's about the bottom line. That's what it is. At some point, you would think that ownership over there that it could be about us. In that statement, is there an apology? No apology. And by the way, he's got to speak again. I'm sure at the end of the year, and the apology and he promises, no, you have to care to do that. You don't care enough, 33 and 114, you wear it as an owner. Congratulations. All the great things in the philanthropy and all the stuff that we don't know that Jerry has done, right? This also is on the resume. This nonsense is pilot crap that we watch every single night with the White Sox. Congratulations. You are 1,000% spot on. And I love just sitting here because I know the passion you have for that baseball team. This falls at the feet of one man, and his name is Jerry Rhinestorf. And I have said to you for a billion years, you are right. He is intensely loyal to his employees, intensely, and that's a noble, honorable thing. But what about the man or woman or the child that is a diehard Sox fan that buys a jersey, a hat, turns on his team, listens to our radio station home of the White Sox. Where's your loyalty to them? Have you showed loyalty to them? Because what you have allowed to go on to be the worst team in the history of the sport in 2021, they won 93 games that he should never have brought Tony back and he could say all he wants, they won those games with Tony as manager. Fine. Guess what? You undercut your GM. You started a downward spiral of your organization among your fan base. And now it's going down the drain where they're going to have the worst record for a season in the history of Major League Baseball. It's embarrassing, it's pathetic, it's a civic embarrassment, what he is allowed to happen. And it falls at his freaking feet. No doubt about a cap and just, and I can go on for hours, but I won't, but I'll just say this. And I told you this many times, I told White Sox fans this many times. There's just no way that I can allow that to happen if I'm the owner cap. There's no way. Do you not want to compete? Not just the level of embarrassment that there is cap. That's what I mean. Like, there's no way I could just walk around the streets or have my face shown with this outfit and do nothing about it. No, I'll keep the money in my pocket. All right, great. It doesn't matter how much money you've made. It's not how much money you've saved. It's about now that you're an owner of a team all these years, you want to do something with the ownership. You're an owner. You want to do something with the ball club. You're right? It's not just, well, we've got this TV money here and this revenue here and this revenue. It's got to be more than that. Once you're an owner, the next best thing is to win or find your way and opportunity to win. Try to win in a big city where more Rockford White Sox than Chicago White Sox. The Tuscola White Sox in Chicago White Sox because you're growing it like a small minor league team. The Savannah bananas have more appeal than you do. Congratulations. Jerry walked into the locker room or the clubhouse after the Astros eliminated them in the playoffs in '21. They won 93 games and they got eliminated by a really good Houston Astros team. They won one game in the series and he put his arm around, Jose, it Bray you and said, whatever it takes, I want to get you a World Series, whatever it takes this offseason, let's do it. Well, I got there off season from 2021 going into '22, Kendall Gravesman, Joe Kelly, Vince Velasquez, three years for Lury Garcia for $16.5 million. I mean, that was it. Middle shell. Josh Harrison. Yeah. Traded Kimbrell to the Dodgers for AJ Pollock. Mean. Bottom shot. Reese McGuire for Zackal. You didn't go all in. Bottom shot. Absolutely did not go all in coming off 93 wins. So Shay. Quickly, Shannon Sharpe went viral yesterday. After going live on Instagram, well, well, hoodie, having sex. Shannon Sharpe's Instagram live was Shannon Sharpe doing the dirty. The video, which did not show anything graphic, did feature graphic audio of Sharpe with an unidentified woman named Michelle. Initially, he said that his account was hacked, but he has since taken responsibility saying he didn't even know how to go live on IG. He took his phone, threw it on the bed. Next thing he knows, people are saying his Instagram live is showcasing some filthy stuff. Shorter, no shot, hoodie, Shannon Sharpe did this on purpose. I did not know IG live. I've never been on IG live. I've never turned IG live on. So I don't know how it works. You do it on purpose? No. I don't think he did. I don't think he did it. Skip did it. You think skip did it. Okay. Well. Skip. They skipped it. I do not think he did it on purpose. Do you think Michelle did? No. I think she reached over, but he said a member of my staff put out there that I got hacked. Member of his staff. Huh? That a euphemism? He got hacked. Two euphemisms in that sentence, a member of my staff put out the video. Okay. You heard it. No, put out the statements that he got hacked. I did not know IG live. I've never been on IG live. Did he do it on purpose? I don't, I say no shot. Oh, my. Well, here's the thing. It's like five different clicks to get to IG live. I've never gone on IG live. If I have, I didn't know or somebody had me on the phone and said go on. Like when I was at TV, Danny Wysocki would hand me the phone. You're on IG live. Maybe you're on Facebook. I think it was Facebook live. I don't know how you get there. It still takes like five. It takes five clicks. I'm going to do it. It's a break. I'm going to see if I can go IG live from the studio. That's a shot, by the way, because, and by the way, why do we get the back end when he's done? Excuse me. I didn't see. I saw it. What did he get? What did I say wrong? What? What? What? What? Did you know? It wasn't in the middle of the beginning. It was to. How do we get when he was done? Yeah, we got it. It was the back end. The back end. Why? It was getting the back. Why did we get that? It was in the falls toward the floor. Nice flooring, by the way. Good quality floors. I know I can't prefer as the hardwood floors over the carpet, but nonetheless, is that true? That's what you told me. I do like the hardwood floor. Yes, I thought. So, with this strange, though, Shay, you got the picture of the, you saw the video of the floor. Or at least the carpet has to match the curtains. Are we going to do a break in the theater? Yeah. It feels like it. Here's a question. Yes. How are you able to see the floor if the phone's on the bed, right? You say throw it on the bed, right? Yes. Yeah. He has as a setup. He wanted people to know that he's getting it in. Yeah. I tell you, are there rumors that he's not? Yes. There are, well, there are rumors that, uh, yeah, we won't get into detail, but there were rumors. There were allegations going around that he may have wanted the dispel. That's all I'll say. I just don't know why I just, it was kind of one of those things where he must have said, I, we're at the end, turn it on. Why at the end? That's the thing that's so straight. Three million people saw it cap. I mean, you couldn't see them. You just saw the floor and you heard him, you know, uh, moaning in lust. Wow. You want to see it? No. Okay. I'll pass. All right. Coming up. I've never seen the Kim Kardashian video either. I'll pass. I'll show you that during the break. Oh, wow. You'll, you'll enjoy that. Nothing. All right. J of babe. All right. Coming up. We go around the NFL deal breakers at 835 on Captain Jay. Oh my God. Captain Jay Hood are back. And you know this man Chicago's home for sports. DSP and Chicago, it both sucks, he sucks, I'm just a fan. I'm not a football evaluator. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is from, but there he goes. This is not Detroit man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winning. He starts to come and he cool. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean, what's absolutely looking for all of these things here, huh? It's time to go around the national football league here on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. We will hear from Super Bowl champion, color analyst for the Bears, Tom Thayer at 9 o'clock. Around the NFL. Here's Shay Norley. All right. Yesterday I gave you the top 10, the power rankings today. I want to talk about the first five teams out of the power rankings and what I need to see from each of them on Sunday. If they want to have a chance to get back in all right to the top 10, we'll start with the first team out the 11th ranked Baltimore Ravens and what I need to see hoodie is an offense that looks sustainable and a Derek Henry that looks impactful. I can't see Lamar carry the ball 15 plus times with any regularity. That's just too much workload for a guy who your entire season is dependent on and the play calling from Todd Monkin just has to be better. That's correct. I think one on Thursday night in the opener, I think it was fourth and one and he called a play where they had Justice Hill hiding behind the guard leak out the only option on the play. You have Lamar Jackson. You give him one option on a fourth and one. It's inexcusable. Top Monkin has to be better. I just need to see an offense that makes sense. I think that this will be straightened out on Sunday as Baltimore has their opener against the Raiders. I expect that to be better against Las Vegas. So I believe that'll be their first win. I think they'll crack your top 10 next Thursday. All right, Shay, who's next? The second team out 12th ranked your Chicago Bears. Oh, wow. This defense is vicious. I saw enough to believe in that. This team is well coached by Matt Eberfloos, but I do have questions at offensive coordinator. If this team wants to make me believe that they can be in the top 10, I got to see personnel groupings that make sense, especially on critical downs. None of this garbage where DJ Moore's off the field on third and four, especially when he's off the field with Cole Komet and DeAndre Swift, like the personnel groupings just have to be better. And you got to get me 250 yards of offense or it's just more of the same. You may get that and maybe a loss as well, but the offense would probably look better. We will see. I will say this, Shay, that it might take some time for the Bears to get into your top 10. Because there might be better teams that do it better as the Bears get better offensively. Again, strong defensively. Cap and I would agree that the secondary, the defensive line, what he replaces put together is going to be good, but the offense is lagging behind, hopefully we're not too long. Look, that defense is ferocious. Should they use another, I mean, all pro rush edge like Houston has Will Anderson and the Nail Hunter. Yeah. Would I love to have two accomplished guys like that? Yeah. That's not in the cards right now, but oh man, that secondary, those linebackers, they come to eat. But to Shay's point, again, Shay, this is why we've gone through it for the first week, where I think that Shane Waldron is just trying to work things out. This is not quick counsel at kind of looking over the Cubs for 162 games to make an evaluation. Because 18 games, Waldron knows he's going to know what he has, who he can trust, and he'll because he's going to go with the best group possible. And Cole Kameh will be part of that. You better make. He will be. There are options. And speaks with that offensive coordinator. Oh boy. Seriously, I wouldn't be questioning Waldron at all if not for the fact that there were multiple occasions of his top playmakers being off the field in critical downs. That makes no sense to me. It can't happen this week. Roman Dunes, they didn't tweak his knee to what? Late in the fourth quarter? Mid fourth quarter? Okay. Then explain to me how Cole Kameh, Roman Dunes, a Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, and DeAndre Swift rolling on the field, the five best playmakers for 10 plays. That's ridiculous. I may drive the lake forest today if he speaks with him. They have one running back, one tight end, three receivers, and 11 personnel, more times than not. It's just the rotation of guys that you want to have. You want to have guys you can trust, and I think Cole Kameh is one of those guys. That's saying that ever it's not. Just saying that Cole Kameh is proving with the Bears that he can be able to work with any system and flourish. 100%. All right, Shay. All right. 13th ranked. What I need to see from the Cincinnati Bengals. Joe Burrow asked to show me that his wrist is okay. You don't have to go to Kansas City and win the game. You do have to go compete, and the offense has to look legitimate. If you look like you looked against New England, again, we got problems. You want to show me that you're what we thought you were preseason? You got to prove that wrist is okay. I won't go as far as Chris Canty this morning on a sportsman like five to seven before we come on out of ESPN 1000. And what he says, I'm selling all my Joe Burrow stock. And I don't think I would do that. Is he healthy? The wrist is an issue. No question about it, but I'm not selling my Joe Burrow stock, either. The Bengals to me are going to be a playoff team. And I think that against the Chiefs, yes, it's going to be an uphill climb, Shay. But I'm looking at you staring down to barrel of going to into the commander's game for the Bengals. Now things get better, especially burrows, healthy enough to play. Right. But if you go out and beat Kansas City and Kansas City where you have played well and you have won in that building before, now you're on your way. Yeah. Because it's chiefs, commanders, Panthers. You're pretty good. You're like, all right, we're good. But she's right. You got to compete. It's an inexplicable loss for the Bengals to lose against the Patriots. Right. But it happened. It happened. It knocked me out of the survivor. What about the other one? How are you doing there? I was alive. I played the bear in one and I played Seattle. See? You're still alive, kid. Still alive. All right, Shay, the next one. Next one, 14 Seattle. Go cover a spread. A week one, you've escaped the back door cover by Denver. It doesn't worry me too much. You're on the road in New England this week is three and a half point favorites. If you're a good team in this league, you should win this game convincingly. Is anything more jagged than go cover a spread? No, it's pretty. But why did you say that? I don't think it's unfair either. You're a three and a half point favor going to what we thought was the worst team in the league to start the season. Go cover a number. Put a number on New England and you'll have a chance at going to the top 10. What do you, what does our guy varsity big cat say? I don't know. Good teams win. Great teams cover. Great teams cover. Exactly right. You think the ball club cares about that? I mean, it's about being able to, and they'll find a way to win games. The Patriots all by the dolphins alliance, it's tough. It's tough. I don't think I had the Seahawks and the playoffs this year in my predictions. I think that I think I have them on the outside looking in. I have to look at my sheep. I think I do as well. But I am as a wild card team. So I feel like I can have the higher expectation and hoodie. I don't care if the ball club cares if they cover a spread. I care. Show me that you are better than a few goal against the Patriots. I think that you could be better than that with your top 10 or your bottom, your bottom five. You can be better than that. You have better analysis than go cover a spread. You can do better than that. You know, Smith looked good. He ran the football well. He threw the football pretty well. The defense looked OK. Got gassed by bonus at the end. New England is a worse team than Denver, I think. Go beat them. Put a number on them. I'm just making the point three and a half point favorites. Go win by a touchdown plus, and I'll believe in you. You go win by a field goal in New England. I'm going to have a harder time. Cap, I like the oldest sense of water. They got this pH quality. What a to it now? Not the same. It isn't so different. It's a little different stuff with the electric lights. I do. It's because it's got a little red label on it doesn't mean this is good. Correct. I'm not happy lately. All right, Jay. One more. Yeah. Last one is the Pittsburgh Steelers. F-15. Well, there you have it. Here's what you need. I need to see two offensive touchdowns. I don't care how they come. If you give the ball to Jaylan Warren or if God smiles on you and Justin Fields throws a couple, you got to score points in the end zone. That was basically the game that last weekend against Atlanta was the same game the Bears played last year at Minnesota with the same quarterback. Prove to me that you can get into the end zone. As against the Broncos, Cap, Stealer Bronco. Stealer Bronco, I believe the Bronco win the football game. In Denver. Yeah. I believe the Bronco will win, but I think that's going to be a dogfight. Oh, so Justin will get in the end zone. He'll get in the end zone. Okay. He set him up well for field goals. He did. Very well. He got first downs. Got you in the position to kick a bunch of field goals. Did you see his throat chart, though? I did. Every pass was like five yards or less. See what I mean? Remember our conversation yesterday? Like this three and five yard pass nonsense? Like, oh, God. Yeah. Third nine. Pick up a six. Oh, geez. Six. But, but this is Justin, right? That's it. Ball control as much as possible. Some position for field goal, but just don't expect four or five touchdowns. It's not happening. Don't expect three. Two. Fair. Two. Yes. Somehow this year is going to win on Sunday because Tomman said so. And that is around the NFL right here on Captain J. Hood. Deal Breakers is next on Chicago's home for sports. [BLANK_AUDIO]
