What time is it? It's Thursday. Thursday. Tom Thayer. Thayer. 1985 Super Bowl champion and football analyst for the Chicago Bears. Heat to win the division, win the division, get into a playoffs. Former offensive lineman. Do they need to get better? Do they need to give up less sacks? Yes. Or Tom Thayer. Tom Thayer. It's Thayer Thursday on Captain Jay Hood, ESPN Chicago. Rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom, boom. We turn to a Super Bowl champion and colorals with the Chicago Bears. It is the great Tom Thayer. And he joins us here on Captain Jay Hood. Tommy, good morning. How are you? Hey, I'm good, Jay Hood. How are you doing? We're doing great. Yeah, we've had a full morning, full morning. Real breakers and punch out and a whole deal. It's been a good morning. So now we're into Game Prep and getting ready for the Texans and the Bears on Sunday night football. I personally believe they are going to show up to compete. I expect them to take a step, not telling you they're going down there and shocking the world. That's my hope. The thing about it is there's a lot of things they can do to improve what they did last week. And one of them in the key ingredient and probably the most important thing is from tackle to tackle on the offensive line, be way more physical. Have a given offensive line presentation that you're going to be the reason that the offense is going to succeed. Don't put it into the hands and the eyes and the arm of Caleb Williams. Now, if they have a complimentary running game that also starts opening up play action passing because you can become deceptive at the line of scrimmage and then you provide protection for the receivers down field and get the tight ends included a little bit more. Yes, but the one caveat to that that really worries me and it's always going to be a concern of mine is the first game that you play in a hostile environment in an indoor stadium when you are you have no command of the snap count. There's where my concern lines because when you think of Will Anderson Jr. and Danelle Hunter on the outside rushing and the offensive tackles are getting off the ball that eighth of a second slow. Then maybe you get you give that advantage to the defense events. So now Shane Waldron has to have a responsible type of protection to compliment Caleb, not put him in a in a bailout or a disaster situation. Tom, if you were the offensive coordinator or the head coach of the Chicago Bears and you saw that Nate Davis only played some but he was at his job was taken over by Ryan Bates. Would you start Ryan Bates against Houston or should Nate Davis be back there again to try to be better? I would start Nate Davis again and I would see if it lit any type of emotional fire inside of him and he started playing a more physical brand of football that they felt that they were satisfied with because Nate has it in him. He's just got to go out there and do it because there was times out there that, you know, Ryan Bates got a bold over as well. So it's not like that if they do make the change and go to Ryan Bates rather than Nate Davis that the problem is solved. It's about which one of those two guys are going to go out there and like I said at the beginning play the most physical brand of football that can be allowed them. But when you talk about Jeffrey Simmons and Tavandre Sweatt, it's not you're not going to push those guys around. You're not going to get just, you know, bowling ball type of movement down the field. And so are these guys going to offer you a little bit different type of football with a foreman front and more assistance to the guard position from Coleman Shelton and are you going to get better movement on the inside? Remember when we talked to Tommy last week, we asked him going into the game against the Titans will see your letter grade for the offensive line. Tom, you said a C. So is it was that a C performance or less than against Tennessee? Great question. I would give it a C minus because when I go out and I look at a couple of other offensive lines in the National Football League last year and I see a legitimate physical brand of protective football. That's what I expect the Bears offensive line to be. And so you like you said both you guys are maybe it was caps and you see you expect a better brand of football this week in Houston than last week. The only thing is is, yeah, you got to be physical man and it's got to be from if you need. So the first play of the game, they go an unbalanced line. They got Darnell Wright, the right tackle lined up next to Braxton Jones on the left side and they have a six yard scene created for DeAndre Swift. If you need to do those types of variety lineups, then do them. If you can present a more physical approach to your point of attack, but you're not going to be able to do it every play. So, you know, include the tight ends and just get the offensive line off the ball, but with no snap count, it's not going to be easy. In terms of watching the snap counts for Cole Comette versus Gerald Everett, I don't understand why you pay guy $14 million a year. And Gerald Everett gets double the number of snaps basically. Why do you think that was? It's something they saw in the game plan. I don't know if it was the fact that they felt there's going to be more edge passing because of the inside threat of DeAndre Swift in Jeffrey Simmons. I, you know, that Gerald Everett is more of a stretch tight end than he is on the line of scrimmage tight end. And I expect that and I hope there's a difference in that game planning this week for Cole. And, you know, Cole is, you know, give me five yard completions. Give me six yard completions on first down that puts you in a more challengeable second and third down scenario. Because if you think that you're going to put it in the arm of Caleb and you're asking him to hit wide receivers with a limited amount of protected time, then it's going to be difficult for you to get into that second and third and makeable. So if I would hope to think that Cole is going to have a bigger impact in the game and more reps on the field. Tom Theron with us on the Captain Jay Hood Morning Show on the ESPN 1000 and streaming of the ESPN Chicago app. That is a crowded running back room, Tom. I mean, you got to get some extra chairs in there because it's swift Homer Herbert Jones as well as Roshan Johnson. So based on what we saw last Sunday against Tennessee, what's the likelihood that Vellis Jones will remain in the running back room? I think it'll remain in the running back room, but I don't know if it'll be a game day active because Roshan Johnson, if he's active and you got Travis Homer, who plays all the special teams and we know DeAndre Swift and Khalil Herbert are doing right now. It's going to be interesting to see if they feel they have injury issues at wide receiver. Now, Vellis is in the wide receiver room this week or is Tyler Scott in Colin Johnson going to be elevated to the active roster. But if it's strictly running backs, then I have a hard time thinking Vellis would be active in that running back room. Would you think you'd be active at all? Because you mentioned some guys like Tyler Scott not playing surprise me, at least not being active surprised me, but you just can't keep them on the shelf. There's speed there, especially if Rome doesn't play. Yeah, I agree with both of you guys and I think one thing about Tyler Scott, he had a really good conclusion to the preseason and he made some catches and he looked like a big play opportunity threat with speed behind it. And if he can go and convert, you know, a couple of short throws into big runs, then obviously he's going to elevate the way they think about him in that receiver room. But, you know, Tyler's got to go out and make some plays. If he gets beyond a defensive back and they do throw it up to him, he's got to go out there and make the big difficult catch at times because when you look at some of the catches that DJ Moore makes, the dude is completely legit. He's 100% man, but somebody else in that receiver room has to start making those DJ Moore type of catches to give the quarterback more targets to go downfield to. And Tyler Scott has showed that he has that ability, but now he has to show that ability with consistency. But that's kind of the same thing we're talking about, Bayless, is the consistency in an NFL athlete is what you're ultimately looking for. If you can only do it one out of ten plays, then you're going to have a difficult time getting on the field. From your film study, not so much practice this week, but maybe that also will influence your answer here. But from your film study, was it worse than we thought watching at home offensively? Was it not as bad as you thought, or actually hit a couple of passes. Keenan catches the touchdown or he hits the long pass down the left sideline or the seam to DeAndre Carter. How would you grade that after watching the film? You know, the performance of Caleb is exactly what I thought would happen in the first turn in a regular season game, because you just been through five months of practice with a red jersey on that nobody can get into your space. Stay away from my legs, don't get in my follow through, don't touch me, don't come into my radius. And now that's completely gone, man. Let's get to that quarterback as quickly as possible. So Caleb, in understanding the speed of the game and how it is going to affect your decision-making process, because he tried to hurry some things that he necessarily didn't have to. And there's a lot of plays I think after you go back and look at the tape, he would probably adjust or like to have back. To me, I'm just going to re-address the physicalness of the offensive line. If you don't increase that and Darnell Wright becomes more physical, Tevin and Braxton Jones and all these guys, because there was one time that the left guard tripped Coleman Shelton, and then there was a pass block in the middle. Then there was another time that the offensive line picked up a stunt. They stalemated him at the line of scrimmage, there was a block pass. So again, it's not just because I'm an ex-offence lineman, but if you look at what an offense needs to do to complement the growth of a young quarterback, it's making sure you have a physical running game that you can play off of and so many offensive factors. Watching Tevandre sweat 366 pounds of Jeffrey Simmons and Harold Landry, all these dudes going up against a guy 366 on the interior, would you rather go up against a guy that big? Obviously not as quick, or you'd rather have to deal with somebody smaller, but much more elusive in terms of athleticism. I would rather play against Tevandre sweat than Aaron Donald or John Randall in his prime or a little Roy Glover or Randy White, some of those types of guys or Keith Millard that have exceptional MVP type of quickness. Because Tevandre sweat, I am never going to block him from the same angle twice. I'm going to have tackle chopping down on him. I'm going to have the center angle blocking at him. I'm going to have a double team and then leave him and let the full back hit him. I'm going to wam him. I'm going to trap him. I'm going to make the contact so confusing to him. He doesn't know or want to actually get off the ball. And so in one thing about a big guy like that and having a chance to play against Bruce Smith as a rookie or play against Reggie White as a rookie, if you can short, if you can use your quickness and your snap count and get your hands of these guys before they get their hand off the ball, a lot of times you can control their body for the length of time according to the play call that you need to. You're not asking to block them for five minutes. You're asking to block them for two and a half seconds. And so you should be able to do that if you keep unconventionally hitting a guy like that. As always, Tom, we appreciate the time. We'll hear you and Big Jeff again Sunday as the Bears take on the Texans. I'm holding you responsible here, buddy. I want a victory when you get on that plane. I hung out with him last Thursday. We did the Jewel 125th anniversary. Volleyball tournament at North Avenue Beach. Let's tell you this about this Tom Thayer. I was going to use some of the nuggets of information I learned for today's show, but I decided to wait until I thought was more important. We got into the football stuff. This is one very interesting fellow and he's a great person. I love that guy. I enjoy a Tom Thayer. Inside conversations that we have about football and other things. Tom's got a lot of things. I told him I said that whenever you're ready, there's going to be a slot open for you for it. It's just to be Thayer. The Thayer show. There's a lot of stuff. It's more than the film room in X's and O's. Tom knows a lot. Tom said something that I thought was very interesting. Let's be the first to bring this up, Cap. Let's do it. I think that Tom opened up the door of a possibility. That Vailus Jones may not be active on Sunday. Kind of in a way, because again, the door is closed on special teams. That'll be all. You fumble, Cap. That's enough. Yeah, I'd be shocked if he's back there returning a kick. That's enough of that. Shocked. So then you're not going to be the wide receiver to replace Roma Dunesé. That's Tyler Scott, who was an active on Sunday. I mean, I'm sure it may break glass in case of emergency. If any Vailus Jones, sure. But there's others on this depth chart that's in front of me. So then we get to the running back situation. You notice that DJ Moore did exactly what Vailus Jones is supposed to do in kind of a pseudo running back position where you end around and give you 13, 14 yards. Correct. So what's his value, Sunday? That's a great question. I mean, Tom opened the door to that possibility. So what's his value? If he's not active, I mean, is that a big loss of the bears? Probably not. Probably not. Now, if you are banged up in the running back room, he's shown that he can absolutely handle a small workload. I'm not telling you he's a 10 carry a game guy. But he's athletic. He's quick. Boy, oh boy, I'd be terrified to put him back there returning a kick. Wouldn't you? I would. I think that was enough. He, thank God, it was just three points that he gave up on that fumble. Not seven. Not seven. It could have been seven. Yeah, because otherwise, doorling would have covered them. Right. But as a, as a kick or punt returner, that's why you have DeAndre Carter. Correct. And Tyler Sky would probably be another choice for kick returner if you need it. Just saying, Cap, I just think I'm not, here's the thing. I'm not trying to pile on Vailus Jones. I just want the best offensive players out there for the Chicago Bears and for this rookie quarterback. And if Vailus Jones is not one of them, then maybe he shouldn't be active. Now here's the thing. I'm sure that he'd be pissed off that he's upset to the side. But again, Tyler Scott, DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, DeAndre Carter, I think that's what they're going to go with on, on Sunday at the wide receiver spot. And at the running back spot, it's Swift. It's Herbert. It's Travis Homer. Is Roshan Johnson available? Does not sound like it, okay? Then do you, do you, but they didn't, I are them. So they, it's got to be fairly quick here, because I was, you'd be four weeks on IR. Do you need a fourth running back or a fifth running back to be active on Sunday? I mean, they didn't give Herbert much run either. Like two carries fit. Maybe they'd rather have Vailus there. I don't know. I don't know what they think. I just think that DJ Moore did exactly what they wanted from Vailus Jones. Correct. And well, on the end around. So I just think, I just want to make it clear, Tom didn't say that, but he opened the door to that possibility. Yeah. And the other thing is, I don't want to be running DJ Moore too often on endarounds. I need him as a receiver. I don't want him getting banged up. So that's where Vailus could be used. For the one play? Yeah, because I mean, Tyler Scott could do that too, by the way. And not he can't run the ball as well as Vailus can. Well, I think you're looking for speed in that spot, aren't you? Tyler Scott has speed. Yep. But you also need to have a little bit of power to break a tackle. And that may not be Tyler Scott. I'd rather use Vailus in that role. It comes up because Vailus Jones is a polarizing topic for some. Yes. They like him a lot more than the fan base does. I just, I thought that Tom talking about that in that way, I thought was compelling. Yeah. It just depends on his room going to play. I don't think he is. Shay has him cut, by the way, before the season even started. He wouldn't have had him on the roster. Right. Unless he's going to turn into a running back that can get you there five and a half yards to pop. I do think he's going to get cut at some point this season, like this, or just be a week to week and active. I don't think this is going to continue. So he was right on it when he had that he was day to day, not week to week. Those were the original reports. And if he's day to day, Rome, maybe there is a chance he goes on Sunday. Maybe it wasn't like it was a horrific injury Sunday where he came home when I'm in a lot of trouble here. He came in Monday goes, it's a little off here. So they got the MRI better safe than sorry, if Rome is available, would Vailus be active for you. Because you mentioned Rome to Dunes day, whether he's day to day, week to week. So if he was available, if Rome is going to play on Sunday, if he's active. I mean, what are we talking about here? I mean, Vailus Jones is, I mean, he was on the way out, even based on hard knocks, almost like polls that he talked into. They might like him in the room, but again, it's about production, right? But I was told up there for somebody I trust. He was never in danger of getting cut. Never. Okay. But then again, that's fine. But you put people on a roster to serve a role. Correct. And his role is what? Like the fourth running back. You know that you know, it sounds ridiculous, right? It does. But before running back, okay, but if that's the case, like, why does Rome being active matter, really, because Tyler Scott's off the injury report. If you need a wide receiver to fill in for Rome, I'd rather have Tyler Scott than Vailus. You would. But I don't know if they would. Yeah, I think you would too. Based on pre-season snaps, Tyler Scott was running more routes than Vailus was. No question, because they were working him into the running back room. But maybe they feel like as a running back, they'd rather have him have the ball than Khalil Herbert. He only got two carries for four yards. You know what only matters, Cap, is how you feel and how we feel. If I was me, Vailus Jones would not be active this week. I think that could be. Now, if you told me Tyler Scott can't play and Rome can't play, I guess there might be room for him. But my plan would be you're going to sit a week and let's evaluate. Rick and Chatham on cap and Jhood. Rick, good morning. How are you this morning? What's up, Rick and Chatham? I am optimistic about that game. They're going to be Houston. Well, I hope you're right. They're going to be Houston. The reason why they're going to beat him, that's going to be a scoring defense. It is. They had shades of 2005. Last year they lost like three historic games. They were up. They were the guy. They were like that. They were the Titans last year. This year they won a historic game. The bears, the whole we thought were this is going to be the week after this defense. This defense looked back set up. They got this punter. They've got special teams that defense had squared. We're so doubtful about looking for this offense. This team, you got to understand in 2005, they went to the Super Bowl with Rick Grossman in Colorado. Yeah. You're telling me you can't be Rick Grossman in Colorado and if he was Jim McMahon, this team and they were going to find love you that year and they wouldn't give a new contract and he went to the Super Bowl. This team is going to surprise you. That's my take on it. This defense is going to manufacture runs. That punter is going to put a new place like that. They got a lot of hungry people. Offense, the question marks are offensive. They got a lot of hungry people. They're going to make their career. They get some guy for a six round choice and he shows out. People are going to make their careers and make their contracts on defense and offense, cake table. Yeah. Easy. You had a cover for them. They said you got a cover for them. He said he's a brand new guy. But if you can just go to the main, he's going to do it. They're going to win that game. Rick, thanks man. Appreciate you. Sidebar my approach. Yes, brought to you by Enkid Law 3.1, 2, 6 million. Side my ball. Cap, you see this story about Campbell's soup. There's a story here about Campbell's. Campbell's soup is going to try to change its name to better reflect the full breadth of the company's portfolio. This company's been around for 155 years and is asking shareholders to approve a shift to the Campbell's company in their annual meeting in November. Did you imagine? Did they make more products than soup? I think they also have like the little goldfish. You ever see that? Like the little cracker as golden. It's like it up in a little package, paper package. A little white package. That's it. Yeah. I think they own goldfish too. They do? Yeah. But could you imagine, Captain, we've seen Campbell's on the shelves forever. Campbell's soup, right? Yep. Pick the soup away from their name and just call it Campbell's. I want you to just understand something, Cap. So, you've got to go to the store and get some bleach. Well, actually, you don't go to the store for bleach. You go for Clorox or whatever the brand name is, right? You're actually going for a bleach, but it's like, all right, I've got to get some Clorox here or whatever, right? That's what it is. You go to the store for aluminum foil. Your wife says, "Hund, we need aluminum foil because we want to give doggy bags to our families so they can take it home, but you've got to put foil over it." Well, you're really looking for a brand name. It's not just aluminum foil, all right? You look at the Saran wrap or Reynolds, that's right. Right, right. That's what you're looking for. Correct. Yeah, you got heartburn. I need an antacid. Well, you don't call for the antacid. Tums. You get the Tums. You're going to send something overnight delivery. You say you're going to FedEx it, right? You may end up using UPS, but you're FedExing it. Yes. You need a tissue. You go, "Give me a Kleenex." Right. But you may use a Puff's. Yes. The brand name. Yeah. Because that's how you know it. Give me a Coke. It may be a Pepsi or an RC. But guess what? Give me a Coke. I'm going to go get some soup. You don't say I'm just going to get, you know, you know Campbell's when you see it. Yes. When you take the soup off the label, then if it's just, if it's a can, it says Campbell's. Okay. Why do you take the soup off of the label? I don't know. They said they want to better reflect everything they do. I'm on their website. This is there with Campbell's.com. You click on all products. And the drop down menu is condensed soup, spicy soup, unsalted soup, gluten-free soup, cooking sauces, chunky soups, well yes soups, slow kettle style soups, home style soups, heart healthy soups, frughettios, pasta, chicken noodle soup, tomato soup, cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, soups or kids, it's snacking soups. That there are soup company is a soup company, right? So you're getting the soup. Why do you, why are the brevity of like, yeah, we're just Campbell's Campbell's what? Agreed. Campbell's makes you're cooking. Mm. Mm. Girl. That's right, folks. You might want to lower the sodium content. They didn't care about that when she sang that song. Oh. They didn't care about that. Pick the can up and look at the sodium content. Yeah. Cap, nobody cared about that. But they should. That's what made people feel good. When you had a nice soup, oh, thanks mom, I feel so much better. She's not a huge soup guy. French onion occasionally on a cold winter day, warms y'up. Yeah. Tomato bisque, maybe, maybe. And if you're sick, chicken noodle soup, other than that, I'm not a soup guy. I can't tell you the last time I had soup from Skokie, right? I am. 3 1 2 3 3 2 ESPN 3 3 2 3 7 7 6 our poll number is that it's a first time for everything, I guess. Jews like soup, I don't they do the chicken and the ribs, oh, I can't stand it. You don't like soup. No thanks. It's the same thing, cap. Like, I don't find soup satisfying. I guess if you're sick, all right, Mindy, can you pick me up some chicken broth? But it made you great. But you do recall as a kid, it made you feel good. Lots of ball soup. You mean so you didn't have as a kid, like a nice chicken noodle soup? Yeah, my mom would make soup. It was fine. Sometimes I just make the whole pot it'd be just not a soup guy. I don't understand that. That was the first time for everything in my career, working with a guy named Kaplan didn't like soup. I don't like soup. That's great. Very, very overrated dish. And this is just just just opening mouth and saying things now, it's not an overrated dish. That's nonsense. My wife would make soup for the kids. It should be like, hon, we're having like, it's like a stew, stew is just a bunch of crap thrown in a pot. Shay put this on the poll, please add, ESPN 1000 is soup overrated. Yes. Shay, how ridiculous is this guy? Just one, he's just saying things and it's so funny is he goes first take Shay, and then he's just launching first take analysis out every day, as soup's overrated, I can see it on the chyron on first take later today, they're going to steal that from you and they're going to use it. Usually that's how it works. Soup overrated. I just don't. Here's Orlowski. Well, Dan Orlowski said it, you know what, soup pretty good, take that. That's my wife. She'll tell you. He's not a soup guy. It's very little. It's fine. I just saying like, I just don't know why you take it all. I mean, use laid out 16 soups right there, different kinds, kind of like chips, like Doritos, like these different five, you know, 10, 12 flavors of chips. You named all these things. If you take soup off the label, Campbell's what motor oil, exactly, it's what you've done for 155 years, you know, can't have that cap. Can't have that. Why? Now, if they announced they're going to have this new line of foods, okay, I haven't heard that part of the press release because it's not there. I just don't know why you changed something that's been successful for you forever. Agreed. Why? You're going to have a board meeting like, how should we try to rebrand? You just shake the can. It's soup in there. No matter how much sodium's in it, it makes you feel good. No shot. Did it out? Put more water in a cap. 312-332-ESP at 332-3776 our phone number, Captain J. And by the way, when we use the underrated overrated, who's doing the rating? Us, then we take a sampling of the audience. We've got a large audience, we ask them to give their opinion and if the overwhelming majority goes, "Yeah, it actually is kind of overrated." I thought doing the rating. I just think that for years, not as much now, Cap, but I mean, a good soup for many people, making a whole bunch of soup for the family, big pot of it, big pot of soup. No, not for this guy. So understand the why we recoil on something as simple as American as soup. That's why I always question your American ethics, a lot of stuff is very not American that you do. 3-1-2-3-2-3-7-6, yeah, you're not really American, not as much as you should be. Why? Because I don't want soup. How are you an apple pie? Love apple pie. No, not as much. It's not my favorite pie. My favorite pie is cherry pie, see what I mean? But apple pie is very good. The only part of America that you love is your deal with Chevy over the years. So anyway, this is my favorite sport. Baseball Chevrolet. I've managed a hot dog stand the previous life. Yeah. Hot dogs, baseball, apple pie in Chevrolet. I have a Chevy. Yes. I have apple pie actually at the house right now. You're more of a cherry pie than that guy though. That's my favorite. Yeah. Not really as American as you should be. Very more European than American, unfortunately, for you. How am I European? It's just very odd. Some of your angles of stuff are stuff that's built within the fabric of this country. I haven't had a hot dog in a while, but I like them. Baseball, yes. Hot dogs, yes. Apple pie in Chevrolet. I'm in on all of them. And very unfortunate. Rush Limbaugh would be very, very disappointed in you. Wow. This guy is not American. He doesn't eat hot dogs. I'm like, yeah, I'm being at work. We're not that healthy. Didn't mind it in a rush. He enjoyed it. Oh, by the way, we got to keep our cap and shade tracker bet going. The Cubs lose to the Dodgers. That's why we're loopy this morning. Again, don't know why that wasn't the GD 335 start or something yesterday. Yeah. Geez. I don't know why again three nights of this, but we watched. So you wouldn't have to do that. The Cubs lost to the Dodgers. 10-8. So, so now need to go 11 and five the rest of the season to foreshade to buy a cap of steak. 11-5. Oh, that's right. Still alive. Oh boy. Yeah. Shay, if you need some help with some money, I'd be glad to send you something to help you out with this cause because this is happening. I almost doubled down. I have to be very careful. But I'll do this. The loss last night. I feel much more comfortable that there's six losses left on the schedule and also frankly once this team, and I say once, like when it's going to happen, when the Cubs get eliminated from the playoffs, the show don't get a start, like they'll shut everything down, phone in the end of the season. I'll be all good. Phone in the end of the season, those three games at the end with Philadelphia. They don't win that series. That last series again, since he doesn't matter, they're not going to win any games there. I'll be all right. Yeah. Pete thinks there's like the 40 man coming in. That's too many people to dug out. Yeah. No, but the motivation will be gone, not that it mattered all season with this. The Phillies are aimed games up. I'm sure they're going to run Aaron Nolow there for 118 pitches. Hey, you better hope beer league softball player Kyle Schwabers not baton lead off. Oh. Yeah. Mets are eight back. Oh, no comment. Nine back. No comment on beer league softball player, Kyle Schwaber. Right. Kyle's a hell of a hitter, man. This guy thinks it's the 40 man coming in. You got to get Iowa pitchers. Yeah. Coming up, like two guys now, they changed the rules. I'm not sure you're aware of that from the September games is like, it looks like the L people every dugout because it's so many guys told me, get out of here. That's my seat. I just got here. You're part of the 40 man. Get out of here, rookie. Go stay in the locker room. Too many people, three, one, two, three, two, ESPN is our phone number, Jimmy and Stager on ESPN 1000. All right, Jimmy. Good morning, guys. Happy Friday eve, but here we go. I'm a soup person, so maybe a little bias, but I got a soup that blocks the world every time you order it. And when you get it from Olive Garden, they're Ministrone is just some of the best around. Ministrone. Yeah. Ministrone. Ministrone. Whatever you prefer to put it, that's fine, but I'll put those soup, Ministrone, Ministrone everything. You know, whatever you prefer to call it. That's fine. It's a fine soup. I know what you're talking about it at the Olive Garden, you said. Yeah. I feel like a guard. Do you have them with some of those blood sticks with a fella before your dinner, up with two or three bowls away before dinner, man. That stuff is that good. Doctor. It's horrible. It's right there in the old, the old River Oaks right there, there's an Olive Garden in Calumid City. By the way, according to Google, it's pronounced Ministrone. You didn't have to do that. You didn't have to do that. Just let them go. He's from Stager. Ministrone. That stuff's horrible. All right. It's soggy vegetables floating in there. Horrible. Horrible. It's fine, Cap. Now you're going to tell people how to soup. You're going to do that now? No. I'm not telling them how to soup. I'm telling you how I soup. I don't. Okay. And Dean just texted me and said, "You're better net kid, 800 calories in the French onion soup." It's our empty calories, other than the cheese is a little bit. You know, now that Richard Simmons is dead, now we've got Cap. Go ahead. Also, hoodie, everybody in their car was on the edge of their seat. What does Dean think? What did he just text, Captain? Rob in Sugarland, Texas, so he has me at Chicago App. All right, Rob. It's actually good data. Good morning, gentlemen. Just got back from Murphy, USA, picked up my winning ticket, so it's a good day. Oh, yes, sir. Our rich friend, Rob. Yes. He's got money everywhere. Soup is not overrated. There's nothing like a warm soup on a cold day, not that we get many. In Texas. And I would hate to have Soup Campbell change his name to Company Campbell because it changed her name. That's exactly very well said. Thank you, Rob. Thank you, Rob. Dave Soup Campbell did some commentary with the Colorado Rockies after his career. There you go. Pitch for the coffee. Very odd. You see, is that the same guy from the-- Soup Campbell's on the air? Yeah. Pretty good. Yeah, pretty good. Pretty good, kid. Here's a good question from Stephen Libertyville on Cap and Jay Hood. All right, Steve. Cap, your premise is soups are overrated, correct? Yes, sir. Do you consider chili a soup? No. Chili is not a soup. I do like chili. As long as there's no peppers in there. Can't stand peppers. No, it's chili, not a soup. Chili is not a soup. What would you classify it as? Chili. Is a stew a soup? I would say stews are soups. They're not soups. Peppa's all liquidy, and it's a drink. You can almost drink it. There are chunky soups. What are you talking about? He has no idea. Exactly. Cap, I agree with you almost everything. This week, you have been completely wrong on so many different subjects. It's blown by mine. Dang it. God bless you. Just keep listening, kid. Coming up, we've got the Cap and Jay Hood cut of the day and the soup of the day, next on Cap and Jay Hood. If you missed something, get the podcast on the ESPN Chicago app. Cap and Jay Hood are back on Chicago's Home for Sports, ESPN Chicago. We just set up the 445 segment for Wildland Sylvie, as we talk about soup. Yeah, Sylvie texts me and you, and he said, "Now you're gonna tell people how to soup. Minestrone is such a jackass." Yes, you going after that guy for mispronouncing Minestrone says you're such a jackass for that. Well, it's Minestrone. It's not Minestrone. Now it's time for the Cap and Jay Hood cut of the day. Brought to you by Chicago Cut Stake House, David Flom and Matt Moore's Dining Gem. On La Salne, north side of Chicago River. Jay Moore. Yo. Yes, it's boring, but it's a sport. Oh! Whatever. It's not boring. Okay, then you're boring. Cut! New deal breaker, you grab your wife's robe to walk down the driveway and grab the newspaper. Reach in the pocket and pull out a baggie of heroin. How do you react? I'm out. I go, "Are you selling or are you using?" I'd like to know. Right. Which side of the aisle are you on with this? Are you selling or are you buying this? Right. Yeah. And of course, the ultimate question is, is she hot with the needle in her arm? Right. Is she hot? [laughter] Not even I was that different. [laughter] And I'll say anything. She's got track marks between her toes and caps like, "Oh!" Can it be seen with the sundress? Can we see? With the strappy heels now. Clothes toe shoes so people can't see the track marks. [laughter] I really like this girl, but long sleeves always. Not exactly. Long sleeves, honey. We have a quicker turtleneck mark up there. You're hot, but you've got to cover the arms. Damn. And the win in the bathrobe is one of the most insane things I think I've ever heard. Oh, it's pretty tall. And it's unbelievable. Hey man, I'm getting divorced. I went, "What?" Great album. Really? I thought you guys had a good marriage. We did, so she became a heroin addict. I'm like, "What?" Jay Moore, I want you to trademark that. Send that right to Robert Kelly in jail. Okay. All right. Yes. That's unbelievable. [laughter] I got you. I can't get it. Carol went in. What's the cap? Carol went in a row with the rope? That one is cap? Hero went in your rope. Yeah. We're going to roll next to the biscuit's on the stove. Oh, yes. Now we got something. That's a hit. That's our Kelly. Oh, fuck, fuck. Kendrick Lamar is going to play that at the Super Bowl. [laughter] And get it all. Don't. Gee. Captain Jay Hood Cut of the day. Brought to you by Chicago Cut. Stay cast on the south north side of the Chicago River. Let me just tell you one thing. Do you notice how when I lead into it, you start the segment time for the cut of the day. And then I say the sponsor and I always try and trip up Jay Moore. I've never gotten him. Do you notice that Jay Moore? Like I'll be like, "You know, try this." Sure. And then he hits it. Yeah. Do you notice how tight it is? And what Jack McGrath is in here, he could drive a freaking 747 through the gap. Alright. Jack's not even here to defend himself. And you are going to, you just said something that's going to live on Hood's board for a very long time. I want you to know that. Yes. What I say. You know what you just said. You know what you said. Don't worry. What I say. We'll bring it back for you tomorrow. We'll do it all right. But you just understand. You're going to be on Hood's board for a very long time. The other thing is, if I understand that Jack is programmed by Shay, he's AI, he's not even real. Well, Sylvie, programmed is Tyler. Oh. 5.15. So now you've done it. Tyler, bring it back. Cap says, "I programmed you." Well, let me explain to you why that's not the case, right? And Waddle says, "I'm a few degrees shy of my programming degree." And that'll be all for that. We thank you for listening and calling in and being part of the program here on Captain J. Hood. Our thanks to Shay and Jay Moore. Tomorrow and today, parents football Friday. Let's do it. Get you ready for the weekend, baby! So long, everybody. Take that. From Chicago. Hey, James. Good morning. Good morning, gentlemen. How you doing? Good getting it. What's going on? I just wanted to give this quick take before y'all went off the air. Okay.
