There are your odds for offensive rookie of the year courtesy of the draft games sports book no surprise Caleb Williams the favorite plus 135. Some other names on there that are interesting but you know to have it from my perspective the more you touch the ball the more likely you're going to be the offensive rookie here and I know some receivers have won it you've really got to have a big statistical season as a receiver to overcome guy who's got the ball in his hands all the time especially if it's a quarterback who runs you know running back who who is the guy who falls into a situation where he's the workhorse he's got a chance quarterback who runs the ball and adds some touchdowns on the ground has a chance receivers really got to have one of those holy crap years to be the offensive rookie of the year. It's freshen our mind because we're coming off these years when we watched Justin Jefferson we watched Jamal Chase come in and just been absolute studs the one guy do think as a receiver if they could get it done I think it could be Malik neighbors from going to two giant practices and just the feeling of like this is our guy I think you didn't get to see as much in the preseason games they're going to have a lot of plays drawn up to get the ball in his hands so I think if there is a receiver that can do it and you know obviously I didn't get to see much of Marva Harrison's junior I think again watching the preseason games or it's difficult to see but I think Arizona has a little bit more there from an offensive standpoint of guys that can get the ball to I think even with Kyle and Murray's ability to run around and make plays I think that changes but I think the Giants have a lot of things drawn up from Malik neighbors but I do I think Jayden Danza Caleb Williams are other guys that we should expect to see and a race to get their offensive player to hear from rookies 11 to 1 of the odds for Malik neighbors at 35 to 1 is the third overall pick in the draft Drake may the new quarterback of the wing of Patriots now after the game on Sunday night the preseason game Gerard Mayo the first year head coach said that Drake may is the second best quarterback on the roster but then yesterday Gerard Mayo kind of contradicted himself here's Mayo talking about his rookie quarterback Drake may it starts in practice and also in the game where you know Drake has played better now in saying that you know everyone wants to know that who the starter is going to be I think there are multiple factors that kind of have to go into this decision one is the total body of work whether we're talking about the spring or the entirety of training camp and now I also say oftentimes you forget about just the overall experience that a guy like Jacoby has and which will also be weighted in the decision that we have to make here in the near future but I'm happy with the way those guys are you know battling it out and hopefully over you know over the next couple of days we can name a starter and get the season rolling the money quote from Mayo was this this is a true competition and I would say at this current point Drake has outplayed Jacoby a day after he said Drake is the second best quarterback on the roster and we were talking about this yesterday we're having some fun and one of the other folks in the room and I don't want to name names because I never want to talk publicly about things that maybe people don't want mention publicly but somebody said this is why you get coach speak and people complain about coach speak but when you get coach speak you don't get one thing one day and the other thing the next day all right I think I speak a little german you know the years that we've known each other I think he he thoroughly met just the preseason games and this is not me talking to him after these comments I just from being down there from being around the guys and and talking a lot of different people it just has a feeling of Drake May the last two games has played really well in the games and I think when he said we have to go back and evaluate the total body I think that's what he's saying to join practice against the Eagles the everyday training camp practices back in the spring they need to put all of that together to see who's going to be the starting quarterback because I think they're going to now fight with so many people wanting to see more of Drake May because we watched him in these preseason games but I think the reality is and and no head coach is ever going to say that but the reality is some of these plays for Drake May are coming against guys that it stinks to say this but these guys they're not NFL players they won't be in the NFL this year and you have to take that into account like this is not going to look like this in two weeks when they have to go play against the Cincinnati banging they're not going to see those defenses they're not going to see that level of player out there everything's going to be better so I think they're still cautious as they throw Drake May out of there but I will say I think Gerard Mayo is also learning I think he's figuring things out every single day that he's now becoming a head coach he went from being a position coach where you're talking well I think it was a once a week to I know coach Belichick you always tell us hey if I have something to say to you as a player I'm going to say it to you I'm not going to go into media I'm not doing any extra media I already have to talk to the media six days out of a seven-day week during the season I'm not in a rush to go give them more content I think Gerard Mayo is figuring that out every single week of how much do I want to talk about this how much I want to go into this and I think I think he's starting to figure out all right this quarterback situation less might be more yeah I mean look I'm not complaining about coach who chooses to talk because 24 years of guy who rolls his eyes and and has some pool string doll catch phrase and and you know grunts and then you ask him a question about the wing T and he talks for 25 minutes I mean I you know I like the fact that coaches will speak a little bit Elliot Wolf spoke recently about possible brain and I traded my head almost exploded I couldn't believe he actually answered the question and didn't say I don't talk about players who aren't on the team which I've heard from Bill a thousand times in the last 24 years so I like it but it does create some issues now one of the things with Drake May is it as simple as we want to bring this guy along we want to protect him because we know the team isn't Super Bowl caliber and you look at their schedule you got some defenses that can maybe break a guy's spirit before he ever learns how to fly I think so and I think those guys have been in New England for a while so they they can remember not maybe all of them but some of those guys they can remember Sam Donald coming into the Jets they remember Zach Wilson coming in and playing like those are the things that you look at and you're trying to figure out okay when do we put this guy out there okay when we put him out there do we have enough to put him out there and say hey Drake this is the best we can do and we think it's pretty damn good and I think right now yes Drake May was a stud and he played really well in that game but the other side of that was I think they had four illegal formation penalties they Jacobi Brissette almost got killed on the open and drive on a play action pass they had a lot of things go wrong and they only had one guy not in there on the offensive line they didn't have David Andrews in there and it was just like they had no chance to run a successful play as we go on her before a lot of coaches say when you botch a snap we could go get the local high school team to come in here and have a center quarterback exchange they did that twice so you start to look and I think you don't want to see the frustrations boil over I compared it on air during a Sunday night game to they all witness the Mack Joe situation and some people right away was like well Mack Jones was successful in year one I know that but the years that he was a successful year two year three they started to pile up and the frustrations just went overboard and then it goes south for everybody the guy it doesn't go well for him in the fan base it doesn't go well for him in the coaching staff and then you just see the whole thing fall apart they can't do that again with Drake May you can't have that situation so to put a guy out there and he's going to be in charge of trying to get everything to move in the right direction and then God forbid David Andrews isn't out there you're going to just now say hey Drake May the center is not there and I know we were starting you we're now going to pull you you like you can't do that so I think the plan I think is still in place for them to say hey you're going per se you've been in some bad situations before your career you can handle this we're going to try to keep you safe but better you better you go down in our number three pick I think that's going to happen over just sending Drake May out there to the wolves what a niche to have in the NFL Hey Jacobi you've quarterbacked some crap teams before and you've lived to tell about it here are the keys thank you by Jacobi's situation Jacobi you go in you're an indie Andrew Luck comes in he retires go ahead Jacobi you go to Cleveland and get your show of why everybody's have he gets to spend an 11 game go ahead Jacobi and the truth of the matter is the guy's done pretty well in those situations we heard Matt Berry all year last year in our screening room talk about don't put Jacobi Bursett in the commanders we don't want you to go win six seven eight games and get a lesser draft pick he wanted to see Sam Howell in there and then end up with Jayden Dale so I think with Jacobi Bursett it's the niche you have he's been paid pretty decently over the course his career to do it and you know I know the guy well he enjoys going out there and playing quarterback he feels like he's the guy he likes being in the winger right now he's looking forward to going quarterback in this team and hopefully making this team better than what a lot of people think they can be and you look at that schedule that we had up it is gonna be a long year now I would have said the same thing about the Texans last year and I probably did say the same thing about the Texans and lo and behold they proved everyone wrong it's not like just one or two voices nobody thought the Texans had a chance last year this schedule there isn't even a natural spot where I say oh there's where they would flip to Drake May and try to make a run this is just can we survive this gauntlet I mean it's week after week Devin those four defenses you like you don't have the Seattle defense where you used to be able to say hey when we play Seattle this defense is really good but we know where they're going to be I know this is Mike McDonald now there's going to be blitzers coming from everywhere and then to say hey we're going to play the bangles with Lou Anna Moreno and then go to Seattle but then we're going to say hey no you're going to play the Jets and the 49ers the next two weeks I just think maybe there's a chance you say let's come up those first four weeks and evaluate but those four four weeks for rookie quarterback those are some of the four hardest weeks you can be in at least the thought process a little bit even in week three and four with the Jets and the 49ers are they're not as complicated scheme wise normally they're not sending gosh them all over the place but now you're gonna like if you're not good up front or you're not sure you want to go and block Nick Bosa you want to deal with with Quincy Williams Quentin Williams he like you want to deal with these different guys if a solid Reddit comes back for the Jets you want to deal like you're now talking about dealing with so many situations that you always say let's protect this rookie quarterback and now you have also had as all of this is brand new so I think you definitely want to work out some of the kinks and when you talk about Houston last year they had a trade I forgot for who late in the training camp they traded for a tackle they traded for Shaq Mason early in the offseason and they also had Larmy Tontzel a guy that you can say hey we're going to slide away from him as much as possible put him on an island let him win one-on-one and help everywhere else you ought to plan offensively what your offensive line on how to be successful to help your rookie quarterback I'm not sure New England even if they think of a great plan can really figure out how to make sure that offensive line can withstand some of the guys and the pressures they're going to see those first four weeks so basically what Devin is saying is those 35-1 odds you saw for Drake May to be the offensive rookie of the year probably not the best bet you would ever make maybe those odds should be a little bit long by the way those odds did come from DraftKings Sportsbook which is the place number one place not just the place but the number one place to bet touchdowns and new customers can get five dollars or bet five dollars and get sports.com/fantasy million to learn more all right let's learn a little bit more about the AFC East we are doing a little preview yearbook style if it works it was all my idea if it doesn't I had nothing to do with it I'm just kidding I had nothing to do with it whether it works or doesn't work but I like it it's different it's not the usual oh tell me this tell me that so division clown last place aka class clown although the class clown tries to be bad in this context you're not trying who's going to be bad despite the fact that they're trying to be good it pains me to say it but it will be it will be the new England Patriots they're going to work their butts off they're going to change the culture they're going to do all the good stuff but they will be the worst team in the AFC East and it might be by a lot we'll we'll see how it works out but it could be by a lot yeah I I hate to say it as well and it's weird to think how the mighty have fallen but this is what happens when one of the all-time great quarterbacks is long gone one of the all-time great coaches is long gone and the cupboard is kind of bear now you know I had people reaching out to me defending Bill Belichick when some of these contract extensions were done oh I thought build it know how to find players they extended this guy they extended that guy yeah let's have a conversation about Juju Smith-Shuster if we want to talk about that okay because they should have kept Jacobi Myers and not signed Juju Smith-Shuster and you don't need to answer that bottom line I don't want to put you in that spot but the bottom line is the bottom line is and this isn't necessarily that the patriots are going to be horrible look at the division you got the bills you got the dolphins and as long as Aaron Rodgers plays more than four snaps which isn't a guarantee but as long as he does the jets are going to be good too so there's a lot of teams you could put in the AFC East as the fourth team and they can otherwise be contenders elsewhere and they aren't contentant for anything in that division yeah and again I was a guy last March when they let Jacobi go I was I was on a radio station I was like this is the wrong move Jacobi Myers he fit everything so you got to put me in a spot I I agree with you a hundred percent but yeah I think in this situation remember the the Patriots split with the jets last year without Aaron Rodgers they still split that match up well whatever we thought the jets were last year so you keep a healthy Aaron Rodgers I just I just don't see that happening for them that I think they'll surprise some people and maybe win a game or two in this division because I think that's just how division games go somebody's not really ready to go yet and you kind of sneak they beat Buffalo last year at home which shocked a lot of people so maybe they get one maybe two of those games but overall like they might come off those first four weeks 0 and 4 we like I've been in a locker room before like when you start a season like down and you have like that that's tough to come back from it's hard to say hey guys we're gonna win our next five and you just you don't envision that so yeah it's gonna be tough sledding all season for the Patriots all right next category a little twist on the traditional this is most unlikely to succeed we'll do most likely to succeed later most unlikely to succeed but will nevertheless what do you got it's hard to say this because they they've won a division the last four years but I think Buffalo I think I think everyone now has moved on towards Aaron Rodgers is healthy the Jets are there and I would say I'm still one of those guys that think that they they probably should be the favorite in his division Buffalo lost some guys then Matt Milano I had as a guy that I thought would come back and be hey he's gonna come back and this is going to really get this deep that's going he gets hurt now you lose Mike a high you lose Jordan supporter should they be as white leaves but you have all these guys who leave step on digs leaves I think everyone's like all right well Buffalo had their time but I think maybe we see this year that Josh Allen goes and he gets MVP of the league and we see this team really take off like it would surprise some people but it wouldn't surprise me and this team put it all together now and had that year that everyone was expecting in the had the last couple years and really stormed his division I think people are kind of writing them off and they can go and do that this season possibly yeah I mean mine is the same as yours but it is specific to the passing game because that's the thing that most people would point to and say oh how are they going to succeed Gabe Davis left Stefan Diggs got traded well Stefan Diggs wasn't doing much anything once Joe Brady became the offensive coordinator so it's not a huge loss to move on from a guy who was wide open underneath on that third down when Josh Allen muscled it into the end zone and got hit as he was letting it go right before the field goal they missed that basically ended their chance of beating the Chiefs in advancing to the AFC championship Diggs was wide open and he didn't throw to him losing Diggs is not something that the Bills will brew this is something they'll move on from and I like the idea of not having a true number one we've talked about this recently in the context of the Packers we set up before in the context of the Bills I go back to when Matthew Stafford had his first year post Calvin Johnson it puts the quarterback fully in charge of the offense and he can throw to the open man he's not staring down the guy that he feels like he needs to throw the ball to 80 percent of the time I'm going to throw to who's open I'm going to make my reads I'm not going to just wait and wait and wait or throw into double coverage because I don't want to hear it in the huddle or on the sideline about how my top receiver isn't getting the ball as much as he wants it I think that's to the benefit of Josh Allen and the Bills with a low bar with low expectations that passing game can be better than anyone imagined the only time that comes up that I think it hurts you is the third downs the key moments in the game where you have to get a play and it's we saw with Kirk Cousins you play in Buffalo it's fourth and 18 you need a play you had Justin Jefferson's double team and I get it that catches ridiculous but there's a feeling about you when you know you have a guy that you can go to when the game matters the most I think that's the thing but I think when you do have those star studded receivers those number ones I think you need a strong personality offensive coordinator who knows how to draw plays to get to that guy and also is very willing to tell that guy hey we need to win football games you're going to get yours we're going to have 15 20 plays designed for you every week but within the game when we start playing like this guy has to throw the ball to the open guy yeah and I think that's the key and maybe one of these guys is going to develop into a reliable target maybe rookie key on Coleman can get it done if his play matches his personality maybe he'll win offensive rookie of the year all right offensive king the offensive MVP from the AFCA studio have I talked about this Sunday he's a guy I picked to kind of really show the world is Garrett Wilson I think you watch Garrett Wilson has been up and down with a bunch of different quarterbacks and somehow he won offensive rookie of the year he's been a guy who continues to show up last year they played a bunch of different quarterbacks a bunch of different quarterbacks that we all watch and was like this is this is not it as much as people want to beat up on Zach Wilson some of the guys they put in after Zach Wilson was even worse and Garrett Wilson still deliver so I think a healthy Aaron Rodgers gives him a chance to be at his best you watch the joint practice some of the clips against the Giants you watch them in a training camp right like Garrett Wilson looked like he was all over the field deep throw a short throw so I look for him to have a big year this year oh you got I look into this way oh I look into this way Tyree kill right when you're the king what do you got you got the crown you got the throne you got the sectors in a scepter that big old golden stick so somebody's got to come take that scepter and whack him over the head with it and knock him out of the throne it's Tyree kill until further notice now wrong side of 30 but he's still the best player on the team that's what made the two of contracts so weird 53 million for tour but clearly your most important player is Tyree kill he makes that offense go he's the king until someone dethrones it I like it but you got it can we double Tyree kill teams like if you play Miami double Tyree kill make them throw the ball to somebody else and I know jaila wattle is a good player I think this is the year where Tyree hill slips a little bit it doesn't mean that he's not gonna have a big year but it just I can't imagine that they let him in this offense do exactly what he wants to do a whole nother year I can't see it happening and look jaila wattle they gave him that big contract I think that at some level they see a transition coming where wattle becomes one and hill for as long as he's there is two if he can even handle be in two I don't know that he can handle be in two yeah I don't know somewhere else before he dropped behind jail in water all right the defensive king in the AFC East I'm gonna go sauce gardener I think I think the Jets have the best defense in the AFC East and no matter what it has to be somebody from the Jets that's going to be the king in the defense I'm going sauce gardener love watching this game I watch Malik neighbors and training can't unstoppable I saw a couple I saw one clip of sauce gardener on him and it made me remember just what makes this guy so good the long arms being able to stay with you at the line of scrimmage but the ability at his size to stay with guys at the top of the route is unbelievable I'm going sauce gardener I'm gonna and this is recency bias on my part because I interviewed Quinn and Williams on Friday and he was great and I've always loved him I'll go Quinn and Williams just because he's the guy and this is the Chris Sim stat that we can't get the Elias sports bureau to officially recognize f the play up where you don't get the tackle you don't get the sack you don't bat the ball you don't get intercept you don't recover fumble but you've blown up the interior the offensive line to the point where all your other guys can go take care of business after that he's disruptive he's incredible and he makes it easier for guys on the back end not that sauce gardener needs the help all pro in each of his first two seasons and if he keeps it up he'll have a bust in Canton but I'll go Quinn and Williams and again it's clear the Jets have the best defense I mean it's amazing to me when you think of how they managed to not completely implode last year without Aaron Rogers because of the defense if they can get competent play out of the offense that in and of itself is enough to propel them Devin and the Super Bowl contention and that's why it's so hard not to pick them to win this division and not to say that they're going to have a chance to be in that last game of the year because this defense no matter what state and games played like there was points in the season when we talked about the Jets possibly making the playoffs which seem ridiculous but it just goes to show how well this defense played and I think that's what even makes the Hassan retic situation harder for Hassan retic because I don't think the Jets defense has a problem saying hey like we never had this guy with us like we'll go play ball we'll still be a good defense even without him so I think that's what makes it tough so yeah I look for the Jets to be a pretty good football team and maybe a chance to play in February so most likely to succeed AFC East is that the Jets you're saying some good things about the Bills which one do you pick if you pick one if I had to pick one I'm going Jets I just think I love what you said I think it I think Josh Allen has a chance to be unlocked and go out there and throw the ball all over the field now but you have to do that now without a really good player and step on digs and you're going to do that against a really good defense in the Jets so hey let's say Kim Coleman becomes a really good player as a rookie all right we're going to go out there we're going to put Sal's gardener on him all right let's say Shakira is growing into you know who we can be all right we're going to put we'll put DJ Reid out there we're going to we're going to see how he shows up and then we're going to have we're going to have all these different guys we have the Williams brothers out there terrorizing you we're going to do all of that and now let's see if you beat us and Buffalo you took a hit on your defense and I got Aaron Rodgers is back so we should be able to score some points on offense I think they have the best team on paper and I think they don't have to see if a lot of new pieces fit they just need to get Aaron Rodgers from a full season and they need the guys that they acquire to just be good they don't need Mike Williams to be this stud receiver they just need to be a compliment to Garrett Wilson they just need Breece Hall to be a good running back and Brela Allen to be a compliment to Breece Hall so I just think they have a lot of things working out obviously the offense align needs to be to play well this year but I mean almost anything is better than what they had last year on the offense align Mike can start with the Jets they're pinning a lot of their hopes to guys with injury histories Tyron Smith Mike Williams the two new guys they added the two big foundational pieces and Aaron Rodgers he's played four snaps of regular season football since January of 2023 and they play three games between September 9 and September 19 that's a lot to ask for to expect him to play 17 games at age 40 going on 41 coming off the 20 killies tended and he's still going to be inclined to use the muscles in his lower body to generate acceleration but some of those ligaments and tendons are going to be saying hey dude you're old sorry you're not you can't do that anymore and he's gonna have to play within himself and I don't know that he can there's gonna be a sense of urgency I just feel like the bills look it's it's almost like the Tyreek thing they're the kings somebody's got to go take the scepter and whack him over the head with it and and I think the bills can be better I think it was toxic last year was to fall digs I think they should have traded them after whatever that weird thing is that happened in June and they should have moved on and it took them a while to get past that and then they finally did so there are the odds you can see from draft kings the jets are the favorites but it's tight jets bills and then the dolphins a little bit behind the bills and then to prove our point from earlier you could put a lot of teams in that spot and they'd be 25 to 1 sorry patriots what you know it just just think of this Devin if we'd have shown that graphic six years ago what the I mean it's like the the the human brain would have refused to process it and that's what's what's what makes the NFL so great that's how fast things can change my whole really 10 years of the NFL Buffalo was at the bottom of the division Buffalo was the team really that you knew you were going to beat the jets had some up and down years where they had Marc Sanchez come in they were an AFC championship game Miami had years where they competed or they beat us for a lot of the early part of my career I think Buffalo beat us maybe one time in 2012 we just kept sweeping them and then out of nowhere you get Josh Allen some things happen Buffalo's the king of the AFC East no one has dethroned them yet but I think the jets again I think the jets were destined last year hard knocks everything it was so much pressure this year they get to just they get to just play football I think I would have loved to see Aaron Rodgers get a few snaps in the pre-season I know it's risky but I just think to get your body back acclimated to playing a game before you go out there in that first real live atmosphere I would have loved this happened just for him to get some of the nervousness Alex to get the anxiety going out there playing after coming off an injury like I would have loved to see it I understand the precaution of the whole season is balanced on this guy's body and him staying healthy but like at some point you got to play football and I just would have loved this seeing the preseason him get a drive or something going out there I know they did it last year and it didn't matter overall but I just think as a player mentally going out there for the first time those first few snaps are going to be tough we made this point yesterday about the Eagles because they didn't play their offensive starters in the pre-season just go through the process of getting ready to play in a game once to wipe away the memory of the collapse last year for Aaron Rodgers like it's a reset because the last time you went through the process and get ready for a game what happened four plays in your season was over we need a palate cleanser in the preseason to get you ready for week one all right uh last week to talk about Loa said some things about Brian Flores who then responded with some things that apparently Toa hasn't seen or heard yet because Toa said some more things yesterday including I didn't hear what Brian Flores said we'll try to make sense of all of that when PFT live continues right after this you know we all find ourselves in situations where we can feel a little bit nervous sometimes from me standing in a studio the lights get a little hot the anxiety runs a little high as I wonder whether or not the words are going to come out of my mouth the way that they are supposed to when you get in a situation like that you worry about app the riffle ryan floor is in the last week i haven't heard from him he has comments publicly i haven't seen his comments publicly is there anything more that you like to add in the conversation to that there's nothing more i'd like to add to that what are you going to add to the answer wow and again words on paper versus seeing the delivery it's always different and to i mean the stuff last week it really was stunning to see the candor to hear him refer to brian flores as a terrible person as part of those comments and to see flores who i thought was affected by it and in a positive way that the criticism he took it to heart and he's trying to grow and he's trying to develop i mean he seemed rattled he seemed shaken at times last week and it's odd to me it reminds me of when there was all the talk about tom brady going to miami and to act like he wasn't paying any attention to that and he had the timeline all off he didn't realize no to a 2022 you were going to get thrown overboard for tom brady you don't you don't realize that we're not talking about before you were drafted we're talking about after you played for the team for two years you don't get that i feel like he stays consciously ignorant of things so he can be dismissive of them because why wouldn't he want to see what brian flores has had to say why wouldn't he want to see how the guy that tormented him in his mind reacted to the tormentee fighting back so that just seems odd to me that too i wouldn't have been at least curious to hear and see what brian flores has had to say yeah i thought that was a conscious effort of i'm not talking about it he saw like there's no way this day and age he didn't see what brian flores said about him and i have to say in this conversation like i obviously played for flow he was my safety coach but even bigger than that for me what i knew that really hurt him was because of the relationship we had i've been to flows house for for holidays i've eaten with his family i've gotten to know uh his twin brothers his younger brother uh his mom and his dad through the year so we had a very close relationship and he was a guy that i watched and i looked up to simply because of what he did as a husband and a father so i think to see what two has said about him that has to hurt you and i think people have to understand in new wiggling we all watched a head coach go directly at his star quarterback tom brady and that's what brought the best out of brady and about the best out of the team i think flows mindset going to miami was to try to do that with tour and i think obviously he even said in so many words of it didn't go as planned the way everything kind of happened with tour and i don't think people should say two and these are toughen up like when you go through that only you understand and experience that it's hard for any of us to say he should have done this or he should have done that it didn't work out didn't work out for two it didn't work out for flow because flow bases what he does on player relationship he said that so i thought it was awesome his growth from it i do think too as saw and i'm interested to see at some point does to feel comfortable maybe on a podcast or something like that to dive back into this but i understand it's that point in the season where everything needs to be moving forward forget all the other stuff let's focus on the season i don't want to make excuses for brian floraz but i am persuaded to at least try to explain what i think happened because his response was so real and organic and emotional to what to have said he didn't just brush it off and refused to talk about it act like he hadn't heard it or you know say i'm only here to talk about the team i'm currently with or anything like that he gave a real answer i think it's a combination of where you grew up as a coach because he saw Bill Belichick as you said do that's Tom Brady now should he have realized this isn't working on tour yes but he was caught in a very dysfunctional organization this is reason number two you've got an absentee landlord who runs the team in steven ross he lives in new york he's not down there they've had all sorts of issues over the years you know mr crafts in the building all the time in new england he's around ownership is there even if they're not meddling and there's different schools of thought on whether or not they do post-bell check but even if even if they're not meddling they're there they're present you don't have you know the cats away the mice do play thing where you've got all sorts of in-fighting and and you know brian flores feels like he's on this sinking ship and he wants to shawn watson and he can't get to shawn watson and i think it all just combined into a stew that was destined to be full of rancid meat and dumped on the ground and everybody was going to be gone and toa would have been gone too that was the grand plan shawn peton and tom brady move on from flores move on from toa and apparently to have never understood that or he didn't he just refuses to acknowledge it so it was just a bad situation for everybody and i think he decided this isn't my guy this isn't my guy and maybe in the future once he has a guy like that around he'll realize i still can't treat him maybe the way i treated him once i came to the conclusion he's not my guy all right we have to take a break we're gonna have a draft of the best secondaries currently in the national football league that's next year on pft live all right pft live tuesday edition we try to do a draft most days since we have a guy here who knows a thing or two about playing defensive back we're going to do the best secondaries entering the 2024 season out of any of the 32 teams we'll pick three h and devin i'd give you the first pick anyway because i always give the co-host the first pick but forget i said that because i like you so much i'm giving you the first pick well i appreciate that i knew i knew it was from that it was our love that we have for each other but i'm going this is easy i'm going to the land i'm going to cleveland the cleveland browns i thought they finished the season that way they brought back the same guys they have i love them i love their three corners hopefully denzel ward is healthy and i love their three safeties with depthlet with uh wan thorne hill and also with either ronnie hickman or ronnie mccloud is at third safety so i think they have the full gamut at the secondary you know i was looking at them too as i was putting this together ahead of the show the thing that gives me concern is denzel ward concussion number five i don't i know he said he's going to keep playing at some point and we haven't seen this happen the nfl became ultra sensitive to concussions in two thousand nine with the return to play checklist and whatnot at some point you're not going to get cleared to return at some point you're not going to find a doctor who says you're good to go so that's my concern about the browns with denzel ward i'll start with the new york jets i mean sauce gardener best defense player in the division one of the best defense players in football they they had chuk clark joined the team last year at safety they didn't really get to use him last year he's healthy and ready to go dj read michael carter tony adam's in that secondary but really it could be sauce gardener and and me and two of my clones and we'd still be a pretty good secondary yeah i that's my that was my number two i had cleveland and a jet uh as my number two so i understood that i think that i think chuk clark is going to be the difference to try to take them over the top and tony adam's another year and the nfl you jumped on the scene last year uh with my next pick i'm going with the baltimore ravens i went on chris sims podcast back in rough forward before the draft and i told him wiggins was the number one corner and he has not disappointed yet and they're going to have to try to find a way to get him on the field because of the way all the other corners have been playing but this all comes down to with baltimore cal hamilton cal hamilton cal hamilton what he can do in a field of versatility he can play in a slot he can play deep he can blitz he can do everything oh yeah and have a great center fielder and marcus william's one of the best free safeties in the league right now behind a couple other guys like jesse baits and those guys but uh i think the the ravens have one of the most complete secondaries in the nfl as well i'm gonna talk about a team that we don't mention very much maybe it's because they're on the other side of the country and we don't know what they're going to be this year but the seattle seahawks with mike mcdonald coaching the team with his defensive background but last year debon witherspoon i mean there were moments where i thought he may be the defensive rookie of the year he had that monday night performance against the giants where he it was shades of ronday barber he can do it all tariq woolen kind of fell off year two uh but he's still there julian love was great last year had that big interception against the eagles to seal the game so i think they're secondary it's not quite legion of boom 2.0 yet but i think their secondary is underrated i think because they had the legion of boom it's easy to underrate the seahawks secondary because it's like oh it's not cam chancellor it's not richard chairman it's an order on thomas i don't care they still could be pretty good and i got higher on them watching tariq woolen against calvin riddley and joint practices the way calvin riddley's wanted a better route runners in nfl tariq wool is a tall guy usually that's a struggle he i mean he covered up calvin riddley on a couple reps so i like that pick uh my third team i'm going i'm going with the bares it's all about calib Williams right now everyone's talking about calib Williams jailer johnson is a stud he's gone out there you saw him in a joint practice against centenaddy i know there was no jamar chase couple reps against t higgins making plays you know how much receivers love themselves you go against you get one of the best route runners come to your team and we're all washing harness and we're keen to now let's say you know i i haven't caught a pass on this guy yet like that's how well he's playing i think adding kevin by your brisker they just have guys all over the field making big plays uh gordon i love he saw his aggression a little bit of pre-season saw the bears some out my top three picks uh in the secondary that's good that's a good pick and yeah jail johnson extra motivated this year too because he didn't make it to the nfl's top 100 player list is voted on by the players which is good that's that's the one thing that list is good for it gives plenty of guys motivation going into the next season i uh i'm torn on this one i thought about the chiefs but lagerius needs gone i know they still have trump mcduffy but lagerius needs gone so that kind of takes a little bit out we don't know what they're gonna be uh i'll go 49ers under the assumption that hufanga is gonna be back and good to go i know that's still kind of up in the air but between chevarius ward you know they've got le noor i i hofanga i and they still were able to function without him last year so it's just like they just this is indicative of the entire roster especially on the defensive side of the ball i think they go out and find guys who have the same mindset the john lynch hat the roll out of bed run through a wall and kick your ass and they bring that every single game every single drive every single rep and they'll be regardless of how it all fits together who's healthy or not they'll do enough to complement the rest of the team and be in a great position at the end of the year i agree with you as long as the difference maker for them it's it's not just his solid plays a game changer he makes play so i think he takes them to the next level if he's healthy and some other teams i thought could have been mentioned for me was miami and new england i think miami i think adam jordan poyer uh i think was a great pick up with jebon holland and obviously jellyn ramsi uh and what he can do and i think new england i loved your broke peppers and cola dugger two big play big hit or so uh they were another group that i thought could be out there with obviously gazales and jonathan jones at the corner spot they need that defense to perform this year they need that defense to perform i don't know if it's going to matter anyway can i can i never play quarterback and go old school and go both ways all right let's take a break uh we'll have more pft life we'll be right after this well well look at this the 2024 rutgers hall of fame twin brothers joining together jason and debon mccordy never mind the fact that they never beat west virginia they still are getting to the rutgers scarlet nights hall of fame how did i get something something something towards west virginia i knew it was going to come out of your mouth i understand it even though we started the show with the pittsburgh panthers la shawn mccord and down on they always used to stomp you guys out in the backyard brawl even when you were the favorites i understand the hate towards ruchers now yeah 13 to 9 i remember that well the longest three hours of my life we were finally going to win a national championship but no take a break more pft live right after this well debon i know what you're going to be doing the rest of the day you want to be doing the rest of the day you're going to be checking pro football talk dot com for the rest of the day because we're going to have all the moves that are made as the rosters get down to 53 and it's not the final 53 guys if you make it today just wait because but tomorrow the waiver claims and it may only last one day great stuff debon see you everybody teats and watson's been making meats and cheeses the right way since forever what's that mean it means never cutting corners ever it means cooking not processing it means our virginia brand ham that's cooked to perfection then twice baked to layer the flavors it takes more time but you can taste the difference we come to work every day to do it the right way even if it's the hard way because if it's not right for us it's not right for you detan watson it's a family thing since 1939 this podcast is brought to you by
