And let's just just dive right into how this game played out. So in the first quarter, Arkansas state ended up missing a field goal on their opening drive. So Michigan took over at their own 24 yard line. The Wolverines converted on three third down conversions on that opening drive. And it was capped off by a 30 yard touchdown run by Carlisle Mullings. He was certainly the MVP of the game. We'll talk a little bit more about it in a little bit. But after that 30 yard touchdown, Michigan was up seven nothing. Arkansas state went three and out on their next drive, but got the ball back pretty quick thanks to the first of three interceptions from Michigan quarterback Davis Warren. So the Red Wolves took the ball the headed at the nine yard line to end the first quarter. And luckily, Michigan's defense stepped up a little bit. And we're able to hold Arkansas state to a field goal that made it seven to three. And Michigan's offense started humming once again. On the next drive, they got the ball back took 13 plays more than seven minutes of game time off the clock. And Donovan Edwards, senior running back rushing in from seven yards out for his first rushing touchdown of the year. Michigan at that point was up 14 to three. And the Red Wolves went once again, three and out with Ernest Housman picking up a key third down sack on Arkansas state quarterback Jalen Raynor and Michigan's offense. I mean, it all it took was four plays, 55 yards took just about two minutes off the clock cologne mollings picked up. Another huge gain went for 30 yards. And this one was capped off by a five yard rushing touchdown by Mr. Mullings. That was his second of the day, Michigan 21 Arkansas state three. And that was your score at halftime and through the third quarter. But in between all of that, Davis Warren through a second interception and a third interception. And after that third interception, it, I mean, it was a brutal pick. If you haven't seen it, go check it out on Twitter and on Google just search Davis Warren interception. And I mean, you may have to, you may have to dig through a few other videos that pop up because he has six interceptions already this season. But you'll probably find it eventually. Unfortunately for the kid, he got benched in favor of Alex Orgy on the next drive. And on that third pick, Arkansas state had pretty good field position. They were getting close to the end zone. But safety McCarry page picked off Jalen Raynor, Arkansas state's quarterback for Michigan's loan takeaway of the game. So you love to see that out of a veteran safety, making a good play on the ball. And that gave Michigan the ball back at the 20 yard line. It was a interception in the end zone. And Alex Orgy came into the game and they immediately got on the board. I mean, it did not take very long whatsoever. Mullings picked up another big running play. He went for 38 yards on a rush. And then Alex Orgy, he connected with true freshman tight end Hogan Hanson for a nine yard touchdown. That was Hogan Hanson's first catch and first touchdown of his young career. So I'm sure he was feeling very good after that. Michigan was up 28 to three after that touchdown. And then everything just completely flipped for the rest of the game in the fourth quarter. Arkansas state put their backup quarterback in Timmy McLean. And this kid, he was making some plays out there. I mean, he he led a nine play 64 yard drive that resulted in a touchdown pass of 24 yards to Reginald hard in junior. All of a sudden it's 28 to 10. Michigan turns back the ball over. They've had to punt. And look, all it took was a was it another short drive. Arkansas state scored with just eight seconds left in the game. And they went for two and by golly, they got it. So it was Michigan 28 Arkansas Arkansas state 18 is your final score. So just going through the box score here very quickly, Michigan outgained Arkansas state 435 to 280. However, Arkansas state had 222 passing yards. Michigan only had 134. But Michigan did have 301 rushing yards. Arkansas state had 58. And this was really a tale of two halves guys, because a lot of I mean, everything pretty much happened good offensively for Michigan in that first half. So I mean, if you want to take a look at the half stats in the first half, obviously, they had 21 points. They had 282 total yards in that first half compared to 153. In the second half, they had 176 rushing yards in the first half 125 in the second. But the passing yards, I mean, they had 106 passing yards in that first half. They only had 28 in the second half. So yeah, they talked about it in in the post game press conference that they just have to improve all around. And they're working on correcting the mistakes that they made. They had seven penalties in the game that went for 69 yards. So Sharon Moore talked about it said that the penalties just can't happen. I mean, they seem kind of inexcusable at this point. There was a very early on in the game, a 15 yard penalty by Quentin Johnson, where the offensive player for Arkansas state was very, very out of bounds. And Quentin Johnson just continued to tackle him for some unknown reason, and attacked on a 15 yard penalty in Arkansas state's favor. So it just inexcusable stuff from players like Quentin Johnson, where you just expect more out of him. He's a sixth year player. You just can't have that with guys like him. If it was a guy that's his first season, his second season, sure, you can understand that a little bit more. But for a veteran like him or some of the other players that were penalized today, it just can't happen consistently, especially when you have USC on the horizon and other Big Ten teams, you got to go to Washington here in a few weeks. You just can't have stuff like that. So when you need meal time inspiration, it's worth shopping Kroger for thousands of advertising ingredients that inspire countless mouthwatering meals. People don't want to leave their blankets either. Back to you. No, back to you. All you. The home with Dunkin' Pumpkin Spice is where you want to be. Yeah. I mean, obviously the big storyline is Alex Orgy overtaking Davis Warren in the game at the quarterback position. The offense definitely changed when Alex Orgy was in the game. They were doing a lot more RPOs. A lot. I mean, they ran the ball just down Arkansas State's throat. I think they had 12 rush attempts as opposed to four pass attempts when Alex Orgy was in the game. So very clearly a run focused attack. Not that they weren't run focused when Davis Warren was in the game, but they definitely let Davis Warren air it out a little bit. He had 14 pass attempts. He completed 11 balls, but the three that were not completed were interceptions. So you just can't have that if you're Davis Warren, hence Sharon Moore making the decision to replace him with Alex Orgy. So Orgy went two of four for 12 yards and the one touched down to Hogan Hanson. He also ran the ball three times for 27 yards and the run attack was clearly the focal point for Michigan's offense today, which I assume it will be moving forward regardless of which quarterback is in for the Wolverines, whether it's Davis Warren, Alex Orgy. If Jack Tuttle comes back for some reason and they put him in for some reason, I still anticipate that it would be a very run focused offense, but they definitely operated a little bit differently with Alex Orgy in the game. And it looked a little better as opposed to what it was with Davis Warren. To me, it didn't look much better, but it was certainly different. So if you're a Michigan fan and you like different, I mean, I guess that's a moral victory in and of itself, because different is not turning the ball over three times on three inexcusable interceptions. Yeah, if that's what you want, then you probably will get it next week. Now, Sharon Moore in the post game press conference said that they were going to figure things out in practice. He wasn't about to declare Alex Orgy the starting quarterback today. And I doubt that he'll do it Monday during his weekly meeting with the local media, but I would imagine on unless something crazy happens in practice this week that they would probably roll with Alex Orgy as the starting quarterback against USC next week. I want to also talk about one other thing that happened in this game, a couple other things. One more on offense and one on defense. The one on offense is Colston Loveland, star-tight end fabulous player for Michigan. He had three catches for 30 yards before he left the game with an injury. He was injured in the first half, came back in the second half, made a catch on the first or second play, and was hit. And he immediately came out, went to the injury tent, walked off the field to the locker room, and eventually came back and he was wearing street clothes, never returned. So definitely want to keep an eye on that as we move forward into the Big Ten conference season. The players that stepped up in his absence were obviously Hogan Hanson with the nine-year touchdown, but also the leading receiver for Michigan on the day against the Red Wolves was Marlon Klein, who had three catches for 43 yards. Now that's not really saying much for being the leading receiver, but he made some pretty nice plays. I got to give him some credit. He looked pretty good out there, looked very athletic, very quick for a tight end. So they might have something going with these two guys we'll see moving forward. If Hogan Hanson plays more, you'd certainly anticipate Marlon Klein getting a lot more playing time, but definitely want to keep an eye on Colston Loveland, an injury that would last weeks or longer. I mean, that would be detrimental for Michigan's offense for the run and the pass game. So definitely want to keep an eye on that. The one thing on defense that I noticed again for a second straight week, and they may have very well done this in week one against Fresno, but will Johnson being in the box and attacking the quarterback? Well, like Wink Martindale blitzing Will Johnson and having him having him not cover a wide receiver is quite a bold decision. He is far and away the best cover player on this defense, far and away, in my opinion, the best defensive player, probably the best player period on this team. And you certainly do not have a second guy like him in terms of being able to shut down an entire half of the field. Jayar Hill is still learning. He's still growing. He's a nice player right now, but he's nowhere close to where Will Johnson was as a second year player. So Jayar Hill is a second year player. He's he's a he's a fine player, like I said, but send him instead of instead of Will Johnson. I just I don't understand the decision to have Will Johnson not cover wide receivers. I don't understand it. I will not understand it. I just don't get why Wink Martindale continues to do that. So that's the second straight week that I've noticed it. Very well could have happened in the first game against Fresno State, but yeah, I mean, that is certainly a decision to have your best cover player not cover someone. I just wanted to throw that out there. I'm interested to hear what your guys's thoughts are on that and everything that happened in today's game. So if you're able to leave a comment, we're going to post this also on masonbrew.com. So check it out there where you can comment your thoughts on this Will Johnson stuff that I just again don't understand whatsoever. Maybe Wink Martindale thinks that his defense is an NFL defense and well, that's just not the case. He's got college athletes. Will Johnson is certainly an NFL player. I don't think anybody else in the secondary, especially at the cornerback position, is currently an NFL player. I think Will Johnson very well could have declared last year if he wanted to and he probably would have been a first round pick, but the NFL doesn't allow that. So yeah, that's really all I got to say about it and I'll leave it at that. So again, curious to hear your guys's thoughts. Leave a comment. Go on masonbrew.com comment and let me know your thoughts on that and all that happened in this game this afternoon. So again, Michigan 28 Arkansas state 18, lackluster performance, lots to work on and I'm curious to see how they attack USC next Saturday. So thank you so much for listening to the post game podcast.
