The offense is going to get the accolades in this one because of the way the score looked. But the defense was about as dominant as you could possibly be in a game. I mean, if it wasn't for the fact that Kennedy earlacker tackled his own guy, there's no chance that Purdue even comes close to scoring in this game. I mean, bottom line, that was like a 50 that ended up being like a 52 yard play that I think got them. I'm like within the 10 yard line, I want to say, there's no chance that Purdue scores points if that's not the case. And so this defense, obviously that was way in the second half when the backups were in and everything else and Purdue was still with their starters and all of that. But the way that they played today, we talked about it a little bit earlier in the gut reactions segment. I mean, they played with confidence. They played with swagger. I mean, we saw it from across the board even when Jordan Betelho goes out of the game. And by the way, he was having a great game up to that point. And he goes out and the other guys like we got you 12 and they just kept on playing and they kept getting in the face of the quarterback and they kept making plays. And I mean, it was it was about as impressive of a of a defensive stand as you can possibly have. And we did this for the offense. So I'll do it for the defense before I let you guys kind of take off with your thoughts on the defense. You know, I'm looking at this kind of from a first half, second half standpoint because the starters were in for the first half. Then they start both sides of the ball started subbing for Notre Dame in the second half. So defensively for Notre Dame, they allowed. This is what they allowed defensively in the first half, 72 total yards of offense. Eleven of those were on the ground. They ran the ball 11 times for 11 yards total. Okay, they had 61 passing yards. They forced Hudson card to go six of 14 for obviously no touchdowns, one interception. They had a couple penalties. Okay, fine, but they only possessed the ball for 10 minutes. They had a fumble. I mean, this Notre Dame team was all over this Purdue offense. Everywhere Purdue looked, there was a Notre Dame player. There was a white jersey. I mean, even the passes that they completed a lot of times, it was a catch. And then they were immediately down right where they caught the ball and it was well short of the first down. I mean, I think they had, I want to, I want to look this up. I think they had two first downs in the entire first half, something along those lines. I mean, it was just a defensive juggernaut is what Notre Dame put out there. Zero for six, third down conversions. Okay, zero for six. Obviously that is zero percent. Okay, this defense was amazing. They were amazing. So let's focus on the first half here, fellas. Trevor, you went last before. Trevor, I'm going to throw it to you on this one, your thoughts on the defense in the first half. The I mean it was it was awesome to see played with aggression played with a chip on their shoulder and they played with a chip on their shoulder after giving up. Sixteen points true you know and that you know Sean touched on the standard in the running back room you want to talk about the standard in the defensive room as a whole you gave up sixteen points and you're having conversations with your team like you just gave up forty five at home. You know everybody was attacking the football today the D line played spectacular in comparison to where they were at last week to be honest with you I'll have to go back and look but I don't know the last time Notre Dame or I've watched them get that many. Six in a game you know throughout the whole game I'm I'm sure there's some that I'm just not thinking of but I feel like for the last call it year and a half that's been a big criticism on creating pressure on opposing quarterbacks and they played really well today against the quarterback who if he gets in a rhythm and if Hudson card gets comfortable. He has the ability to pick you apart but the second he gets uncomfortable he throws pick six is to D ends. I guess what he did today yeah right so I thought they played fantastic in the first half giving up eleven rushing yards after giving up I think well over a hundred in the first half to northern Illinois a week prior is a fantastic adjustment. Ben Morrison gave up that one slant route early and then he just I don't even know if he was targeted again. So I don't know if if the receiver was even open enough to even get looked at again right so I think it all levels the defense played fantastic they created turnovers they made Hudson card extremely uncomfortable in the pocket is fantastic. It was I mean like I would quantify it this way and you talk about the bubble card tray or he picked six if he if it's Hudson card somehow gets it over him then Jaden Osbury's getting a pick six I mean like it was. This was the thing that I took from this game Texas A&M after that game what you were so excited about was that Notre Dame felt confident defensively and they were just so fast like everything they did was fast even the plays that we criticized like a Don Shuler missing the tackle on the screen in the first game was like but bro he made an incredible play to even get in that position to start out with like he was so fast right. They didn't look fast for whatever reason it like just no juice no energy they looked like they were just an average the speed and team like they just did not have a ton of speed. This game they were intentional and they were fast and in that went from Jason only a was a guy that I highlighted as a big time player. I thought that King civilian was a showcase that he's that type of dude Jordan Patel who had a big first half and obviously the injury but like he played really well Christian gray look fast Kennedy or lacquer look fast. Wine backers in the first team look fast like everybody just looked fast today which was just incredible like it really was an office that started in the first half they set the tone because I said the same thing Trevor like. Hudson card is a solid college quarterback but he is a he is an r p o centric methodical passer like he needs that extension. He needs to ball out of his hand quick and he usually makes quick decisive decisions when you force him off his spot and make him try to be a creator. That's when bad things happen ultimately that's why that interception happened that's why a couple sacks happens right so that defense was just attack attack attack from start to finish even the mistakes they made Allah the Kennedy career lacquer trucking Jada Mickey for whatever the heck reason that was was a fast mistake and you've heard me on this podcast a million times. I'm okay with mistakes that they're fast completely okay with them the mistakes I can't live with are just like you are on your unsure of what's happening so you just stop and you don't move and you're just standing there like fast mistakes are always okay in my book because they are teachable and that still shows effort that defense was fast tonight. Yeah I think for me I come out of this game with even more respect for the Northern Illinois coaching staff. Right because the truth of the matter is the way this Northern defense is built if you just line up and come straight at them. And you're just trying you're not going to use motion you're not going to try to isolate certain plays you can isolate and pass coverage like the linebackers. You're doing yourself a disservice right and Graham Harold did my opinion us and Carter disservice like there was really no creativity it was almost like okay here we are we're going to do our thing. And we're going to see if we're good enough to be going to Illinois did do that. Northern Illinois came in with a totally different plan same framework, but a customized game plan to slow Notre Dame down and take them out of what they want to do. That was the reason for the type formations that was the reason for the stretch plays Notre Dame wants to get up the field. That's what they want to do Marcus Freeman said they made us play pit ball. They took us out of the things we wanted to do and then they made us hesitant that's what happens. Like your team takes you out of what you want to do no matter what sport it affects how fast you play become hesitant in your decision making you make mental errors. And that's what we saw from this defense. They got back to being themselves and Purdue really didn't give them a reason not to be dominant. It just didn't if you're going to allow Notre Dame to just do their stunts come with pressure and lock up what you know they can do consistently. On the back end. And they did it with the backup with the starters and the backups. I mean, it's crazy. So moving forward. I started to now look at teams from a schematic and coaching standpoint. That can do things because the teams like. I'll watch USC a little bit more. But I trust linking Robbie probably to be a little bit more creative, but teams are just lined up and try to just. Okay, we're better than you. We have these. I doubt, like you said, you got that one off on being more than early. Right, Northern Illinois got a couple in situations last week. But for the most part, this is who this defense is when they play a bad game, they're going to keep you in the teams. And that right there is absolutely. Amazing. Amazing. It's not like, you know, most defenses. Take the mission of defense. That was a defense that had been together for multiple years. Very senior league, you know. Lots of leadership. This is a very balanced defense. Very balanced where you have a lot of south boards. Put them work and then you have your seniors and. You know, you don't see that type of mix with a great defense, a lot of college football. Usually it is those singular defenses, you know, junior singular defenses that can go. Becoming really good defenses, but it's the first half performance. I expected. I'm going to be honest, because I'll go and make Hudson cars sound like Lamar Jackson. He was talking about him this week. Like, I think he's the fastest quarterback. We're going to face all year. I'm like, what was he talking about? He's not talking about the best.
