And hello again friends, welcome to another edition of Southern Fairways Sports Radio Show presented by McConnell Automotive, the number one GMC dealer in the state of Alabama. They're located just east of I-65 on Dolphin Street in Mobile, or you can check them out online at mccollautomotive.com. We're broadcasting live from our Shrickson Studios located right here in South Alabama as I am your host Randy Bergen along with PGA Teaching Professional, and the director of Golf at Coel Creek Golf Club in Beutiful, Fair Hope, Alabama, I'm Apogee, Sweet Swing and Bobby Hall. Bobby, how you doing my man? Doing good. It's a beautiful day. Get out and play some golf and get outside and enjoy the weather. Get out and play some pickleball or something, but watch your little football and get outside as beautiful weather. I'm going to go and record and say that's the first time pickleball has been mentioned on this show. So hang it out with us, retired high school football coach and college coach, our good buddy. We call him G. Barry Gibson, what you doing, G? Man, I'm just so glad to be here, Randy. Again, it's a beautiful day like Bobby said and a lot of good football games on the day, so looking forward to going home and watching those, but glad to be here though. Always good to be in here with you. Yeah, we're going to have a lot of fun also. Before we left the door open, I thought I locked it, Bobby, I thought I locked it. War Eagle TVs, Doug Holton here, Dougie, how you doing, man? I'm good. I have the pick for the lock. I noticed that Bobby came in this morning and talked some football, but forgot to take his crimson golf shoes off. Did you notice that? Look, we have a tournament tomorrow, the Southern Fairways golf tours. Second to the last tournament, it's going to be at Kraft Farms tomorrow, and Bobby's out practicing. That's what he was doing early. And now there's evidence of it, thank you for pointing that out, Doug. I can promise you, man. But, no, you mentioned it, Barry, a lot of big games going on, of course. I guess one of the big ones today that you'll watch coming up at 11 o'clock on Fox, the Crimson Tower of Alabama, where they travel up to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers. Listen, there's some folks saying that Wisconsin could win this thing in a big way. Yeah, they can. That environment up there is going to be crazy. I mean, their fans are just real passionate. It's going to be packed. The first time Alabama's been there, how many years, man, it's been a long time since they've been in that stadium. And so the environment's going to be tough for Alabama. And they're just one of those teams, Wisconsin. They're physical, they're not fancy, they're just going to light them and try to hit you in the mouth. So it should be one of those slobber knocker games, you know, and I look forward to watching that one. It should be good. It should be a lot of fun. Doug, your thoughts on it? Well, it should be fun. I had a chance to watch Alabama a little bit last week. And they struggled a little bit in the first few quarters with South Florida, but it'll be fun to see them go on the road and see what they can do against a physical team like Wisconsin. They're a big favorite. So you would expect Alabama to win the football game, but, you know, it's always fun to play the game and see what happens. So it was Notre Dame. They were a big favorite, I guess. Northern Illinois. Yeah. Where did that go? Well, hey, look, that's why they play the game. I mean, I think there was a team that was a big favorite last week that got beat too. I was going to say, yeah, you were there. Yeah. So, you know, that wasn't, that wasn't. Talk a little bit about Auburn right now. I mean, you know, we talked early in the season, pre-season, we talked about Peyton Thorne. Maybe perhaps he's improved a little bit, but that game last week was, was, was a little tough. Was not good. And he didn't make good decisions and therefore we have a new quarterback this week, Hank Brown, who's the backup that Coach Free's recruited to Liberty and came to Auburn from Liberty, is going to start today and we'll see what he can do. And we're playing New Mexico. So we're a 28 point favorite. I'm not sure we're going to find out a lot about anybody today, but it's a chance for Hank to get his feet wet. You know, talk a little bit about that defense. You, I mean, you, you've got your, you've got your, your waggle TV. So you got your thumb on the pulse of Auburn football that, uh, talk a little bit about that defense because I don't know that they were completely there last week as well. Yeah, they have some new guys in the middle of the defensive line, uh, which I think are going to come on and, and be good players. You know, they're kind of working their way into the lineup right now. The cornerbacks, uh, is a little concerning to me. The, the youth and, uh, inexperienced there and I don't know if we're going to have some new players there during the season or not, but that's got to get better. I think the safeties are pretty good, the linebackers are pretty good, but, uh, you know, we'll see. We're getting ready to get into the, the depth of the SEC lineup next week and, and schedule with Arkansas and then Oklahoma and then Georgia for, for Auburn. Yeah. And I tell you, Doug, I think today is a must win for Auburn. You know, it's one of those games they've got to win this thing. If they do, people still has a little faith in them. You know, they're a little excitement. If they drop this one to New Mexico, it's downhill, brother. I mean, this is going to be tough on them. So to me, we talk about must wins, but this is one of those games that I feel like Auburn has to win this game. Yeah. We talked about that before the season on our show. Um, and I think Auburn really needed to win the first five games this year to do what they had to do. They had five, five games at home. They have Oklahoma at the end of that, but if they win the first four, they have a chance to beat Oklahoma. Do they now? Sure. I'm not sure how good Oklahoma is, so. Well, you get past New Mexico, you get Arkansas next week and then Oklahoma. So how good is Arkansas? I mean, it's, it's a question mark all the way around, you know, you're a good football team. Yeah. I didn't get a chance to see the second half of that last week, but I watched the first half of Arkansas and they were up 21 to seven, I think, and then, and then lost it in the second half. But they look pretty good in the first half. Well, let's do this. Let's jump out of the SEC and jump over to Bobby's favorite school, one of Bobby's favorite schools. And certainly, what year is Barry, where you played there? Yeah. The Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. Well, they're going to take on South Florida Day at six o'clock. And looking forward to that, it'll be a real test for Southern, South Florida got a lot, you know, a lot of power and plays good football. So it's going to be a real test that Southern Miss won last week. They were at home. Still got a lot of kinks to work out, but Barry, you had a great time last weekend visiting your friends. What do you think about Southern and South Florida? Well, we talked about it last week. I was at a reunion of a lot of players who played in the '70s, and I got to see a lot of my teammates last week that I played with. And we talked about it. Southern did have a big win last week, 35 to 10. This opponent though today, a little different animal, you know, than they played last week. It took me a lot tougher. So again, we'll see really what we made up, did the win last week help, absolutely. But like you said, Bobby, they're still putting some pieces together. Particularly on offense. They're trying to figure out who they are, you know, you have to have an identity, you know, as a football team, offensively and defensively. And I don't think Southern Miss has developed an identity yet on offense, or we're going to be a hit you in a mouth type running, or we're going to throw it all over the field or a little bit of both. But I just don't think that identity has been found yet. And so, you know, maybe, maybe the day we will. I hope so. I'm pulling it on. I think we talked a little bit about one of your teammates, Bobby, a guy you played a lot of golf with, the late Ray Guy. And of course, I guess he was the first opponent, maybe he's the only opponent that's been put into the NFL Hall of Fame. Right? That's correct. Only first round pit. Well, and I thought a lot about him last Sunday as we sat right there in the Superdome. We watched New Orleans play last week against Carolina. And there is no longer the score board up there. No Jumbo screen up there. No battle. Yeah. So Ray broke it. Well, they were fine. I watched these punters. I'm like, okay, because they're pointing the ball pretty high. If you can remember kind of guesstimate about where that Jumbo screen was, dude, he was putting it up there. I mean, if you haven't been in the Superdome, they've really done a lot to it. It was a fantastic game watching the Saints. They performed very well. I hated it for Bryce Young. He just, his offense, it was tough on him last week. And I know you're a Carolina fan, right? Well, I was for a little while there. Until the second half. Well, you know, when Cam was playing it at Carolina. But the other interesting thing this week, Randy and guys, was watching two of the other night. Yeah. And I thought that was an interesting play. Why did he decide to do that at the end of the ballgame and is that maybe the end of his career? He's a competitor. That's why he did it. He's a competitor. You just can't take that competitor spirit out of a player like that. He was trying to get yards, trying to get that first down. That just kicked in. Even though he probably knew better than, you know, lowers head and go in there and take a hit like he did. But that competitor spirit, I've been in those situations as a player where maybe you shouldn't really do this. But you go ahead and do it anyway because you just. Yeah, but you're not thinking like that. You know, I'm running the ball. I don't think I'm going to lower my head right here. You're not thinking like that. You're not thinking I've got to get across a certain yard line and I know that's what he was thinking. He wasn't like, oh, if I get hit, I could have a concussion. Yeah. Well, there's, well, there's situations that come up like we were playing Alabama when I was playing the Southern Miss and we had a play where I had to, well, I was a split out. Why? But I had to go inside and crack back and block on the linebacker. Well, that linebacker having to be Woodrow low. And so you figure, you know, I really probably shouldn't do this, you know, try to block him and get my head knocked up, but you do it anyway because you're competitive. So those were the situations when I was going in there, I was like, oh, lord, you know, it's so I got to crack back on Woodrow low. But it's, it's that kind of stuff, but you, you do it, you're supposed to, but he's two as a competitor. I mean, he's just, he's trying to win the game, which brings up the question now, Ray, does he continue to play? Well, that's going to be the question. They just gave him a nice little, almost $200 million contract, right? Yeah. That's the situation a couple of times before. This is his third one, I believe, right? And so I don't know. You don't want to be one of those guys that just does some crazy way, right? We're going to take a time out when we come back at a special guest coming up. Yeah, Fred Riley, coach Fred Riley is at the Alabama, Wisconsin, buddy. So we're going to talk a little college football with coach Riley and maybe a little live golf because he was there. Yes, he was yesterday. All right. So we'll take a quick time out. Don't go anywhere. Right here on Southern Fairways Sports Radio. Hey, get her done. You know, this is Larry the capable guy, and you know who you're listening to? That's right. Randy Bergen on Southern Fairways Radio Show, and if you're not listening to him, you're a communist. These boys are good. Hey, welcome back to Southern Fairways Sports Radio. I am Randy Bergen joined by the gang here. We got coach Barry Gibson here, sweet swinging, Bobby Hall, director of golf at Quill Creek Golf Club, Wrigel TV's Doug Holton and guys, we are going to head up to Madison, Wisconsin. More specifically, we're going to Camp Randall Stadium, where we have coach Fred Riley up there. Coach, thank you for taking time to be with us today. Thanks just to talk to you. I appreciate y'all having me on. I'm literally standing at the top of Camp Randall Stadium. Uh, this is where our tickets are, Susan actually said, we, Susan actually sat us down and then she got up and said, you know, we're in the wrong row and I looked, I said, oh, I'm going to throw, uh, now we're four rows down, so now, uh, for a little Bob Yooka there. Hey, I'm in one of Yooka's seats, I can guarantee you that. There you go. There you go. Hey, coach, before we talk Alabama football and, and, and, and Wisconsin, let's, uh, yesterday you had an opportunity. You were there. The live is, the live tours in Chicago. You had an opportunity to go there. What was your experience like there? I tell you what, it was fantastic. I mean, it, it was just, uh, uh, uh, it was what a guy who plays at Quail Creek would appreciate. Uh, uh, maybe, maybe not somebody that plays at, at, at, uh, at Lakewood would appreciate it, but maybe myself, I mean, it, it was awesome. I mean, it was loud, there was music going the whole time, we, uh, we got to see every top player hit a shot here and there and, uh, uh, and actually videoed a few guys with their swings that, uh, it, it was just really cool. So they may, hey, coach Bobby Hall here, you, uh, so they made it, uh, kind of a fan, fan fair event with the music and everything. Did you like that versus a PGA tour, where it's a little more, uh, I really see it because you know, you didn't have to worry about your, you, you, you, but what with your little kid, it's very kid-friendly because once the kid gets loud, I mean, anybody go shushing because they couldn't hear him anyhow, uh, you know, there's a big, big fan-friendly area with all kinds of cutting competitions, shipping competitions and, uh, uh, uh, wedge competitions besides all other kinds of stuff going on, but that, that, that there's just very, you know, if you, if you know, if you're laughing and child got tired of watching golf, like the score, they're gonna stay for hours. I mean, it was a little bit of everything for everybody and, uh, uh, uh, really, really cool, Bobby. Well, that, that's really good. I know Chicago's a great sports town and I've done a few events up there myself and the people come out, uh, no matter what sporting event it is, Chicago, uh, sports fans are very special. So glad you, you got to see that, uh, I guess, uh, you're at the top of the stadium, not only because of your seat, but get a better reception on the phone. Is that maybe sick? Yeah, I got to get it too far. Yeah. Listen, have a great time. I appreciate it. Let me say something else about the, uh, the, the live thing that's so good, the logistics of how they got people in there and, and, and just the, the, the transportation, everything that goes with it. I mean, I can remember JV and freshman football games or I can find enough people to work on that stuff and take a minute and these guys, I mean, what a, what an operation. So, uh, really something. Well, we're visiting with coach Fred Riley, coach, uh, before we get into football, I want to ask you now, did you have a favorite live team or was there a favorite golfer? I mean, the crushers right now, I think are leading at nine under the four ACEs or five under along with Smatch. Did you have a favorite there? You know, we, I started following B. Shamboh when he was in, um, uh, in college. So I've always liked him. I actually play single link fires and, uh, uh, that, that concept intrigued me and I started using them seven years ago and, uh, and have stuck with them. So, so we wanted to make sure that we saw him a little bit. And then, uh, of course, if you look at kept the scorecard from yesterday, I mean, to see how many twos and threes were on it. Oh my goodness. I, you know, he was eight, he was, he was eight under and did not birdie a par five. Uh, he had no vote. He's a tremendous, I mean, what a round of golf that's like the place. I know coach, I texted you last night about, uh, John ROMS 340 yard three wood that I saw yesterday. But let's talk some Alabama football since you're right there in the stadium. The teams are warming up, uh, Alabama is a big favorite today. Uh, Wisconsin, uh, a place that usually has a rowdy crowd and a physical football team. What does it look like and, and what do you expect in the day? Well, you, you would not convince the, uh, the people in this stadium, uh, uh, are in this town, but Alabama's favorite, uh, they, they, Wisconsin fully expects to win the game. I mean, you can tell it. And, uh, this is a big moment for them to have a team, this caliber come into here. And, uh, I mean, you talking about an electric atmosphere in this stadium. Already, I mean, it is really something and you have to put, you park at the capital at that. Think about like a 30 minute walk down into the campus to get here. So you don't get, you know, help the post game issues and, uh, it was, uh, I mean, let's just say that, uh, all of the, uh, all of the bars and taverns were open and alcohol was growing freely at nine o'clock before so, uh, it is wide open. Hey. Hey, Fred. Barry Gibson here. How you doing? Yeah. Hey, man. Look, we're sitting here in the studio and we've got the TV home and they were talking about the Wisconsin, Alabama game and they're making their picks. All the, uh, people on the show picked Alabama, except one. And that would be one, Mr. Danny Canell, who pick, who pick Wisconsin, who absolutely hates Alabama. Oh, yeah. He's taking Wisconsin to win. So, uh, they got somebody. Yeah. No doubt. I know it, man. It's going to be a good football game though. You're, you're right. Those people, they expect to win. Uh, I think it's going to be physical. Of course. It is going to be physical man. The tradition of coming into this stadium and they've got all their big 10 championship banners on the press box and their Rose Bowl champion banners. I mean, it's, it's really cool for a guy from Brazil, Alabama to be in, in this stadium today. Yeah. And I'm very, very blessed. Well, for two, two old war horses, like you and me, we like that slobber knock and hit them in the mouth. Football, don't we, buddy? Yeah. I, I've got a feeling they might get, they might have, you know, Paul's, uh, for, for, for review here and there, for a targeting call here and there, I think they don't get after. Right. Yep. Hey, talking to coach Fred Riley, who is at the Alabama Wisconsin game right now. And coach, I know I sent you a little video last night of that. Uh, Wisconsin is not their main fight song, but it's one that they play that's really the Budweiser song, my main memory of, go ahead. Yeah. You're exactly right. Of course, you know, and, and I'm, I'm actually an Auburn fan and, uh, but, but my wife is an Alabama fan. I grew up in Alabama fan, but spent the year with coach died Auburn and transitioned to Auburn fan, but I, I don't root against Alabama. I root for them except when they're playing Auburn and, uh, but so, so, you know, I get, I get that video last night and I say, you know, here's a, here's an Auburn guy who just can't stand it. He's going to root for Wisconsin. It don't matter. And, uh, it was pretty, Susan got a big kick out of that myself, too. My main memory, I was going to say though of Wisconsin, they were playing in Birmingham. I think it was the Hall of Fame Bowl at that time. This was, I don't know how many years ago, a long time ago, but we went up in the Wisconsin section and these guys that were 50 years old, they're wearing, uh, long red, uh, dresses. I don't know what you call them. Just for the, just for overall things. Oh yeah, there's, there's, we, we saw those hanging in the bookstore window when we walked down state street. There looks like it's everywhere. Oh yeah. And they kind of got a fair. I don't know. My hair is there. How kind of looked in it, but, uh, probably wasn't there anything up on anybody to see. Yeah. So they were, they were playing that, uh, that Budweiser song and also in singing that. It was, it was a memorable experience. No question. I mean, like, these are, these are some fun people now and, and, and they're very gracious. Nobody said, you know, I mean, you, I mean, we are outnumbered of, you know, uh, let's just say by a bunch and, uh, everybody's been nice and gracious and kind of, you know, not, not, not, not other than some guy walked up beside me and said, I hear Alabama people talk funny. I said, Oh no, you know, bless your heart. Hey coach, thank you for taking time to be with us. I know y'all having a blast up there and, uh, and who knows, maybe we can get, we can get you out there to play a little golf at, at Quill Creek with me and Bobby, I'll take you and Fred on. Yeah. And, and Barry, you jump in with us. And I'd love to. And Fred is not only at the Alabama game today. He's going to watch the Packers at Lambo Field tomorrow. Right. Wow. What a weekend. And, and I'll, I'll be, I'll, I'll play golf with y'all as long as y'all don't, y'all let me keep playing from the gold teams now. He ain't, don't don't put me back. And Bobby set the keys up that day. I mean, I don't know what it's like to see, don't do that. Hey, hey, hey, hey, Barry and Bobby also qualified in that age group. So we'll move them up as well. Hey, hey, hey, have fun, coach. Will, we'll be talking with you soon. Great. Thank you guys. Have a great day. All right. See you Fred. All right, buddy. Oh my goodness. That was good. Yeah. I'm sure they're going to have a great time. And his wife, Susan, is a big Alabama fan, probably the biggest Alabama fan. I know. And I hope they have a great time. Well, you know, that's why whenever you sent that to me and I'm like, I thought he was an Auburn fan. He coached it all. Yeah. He has a graduate assistant, but you know, he's a football fan. He enjoys watching Alabama and Auburn and everybody in the SEC like we all do. Well, I think Alabama right now, 16 and a half point favorite is the last that I saw. Right. So it should be should be a lot of fun. That happens at 11 a.m. Coming up in about about 30 minutes, so warming up. I saw. I saw I was watching game day and I saw Wisconsin fan. They showed the crowd there briefly. I saw Wisconsin fan with a t-shirt on that says Alabama fans say role type does a cane spell elephant. Wow. It's going to get nasty. Wow. It's going to get nasty. I saw something right at the top of the stadium too, like hanging over the top of the stadium. That was free. Yeah. He was hanging over. He was hanging over. Hey, you know, coming up in our next segment, we're going to turn and talk to a good friend of ours. Turn him in direction for the C.J. Cup Byron Nelson. John Drago is going to be on. He's going to be one of the rules officials at the President's Cup coming up what next week and two weeks and he's going to be there. We're going to talk a little bit about that with him. Also, we're going to talk some Texas football as Texas today. They've got a pretty good game. They are playing. No. Who are they playing? I just saw it just a few moments ago. They got a pretty good game. I think they're taking on a UTSA should be a big game. San Antonio. University of Texas San Antonio. Oh, it's a big game. Big game. Big game. The Road Runners. There you go. We'll talk with John Drago right here on Southern Fairway Sports Radio, don't go anywhere full. And welcome back to Southern Fairway Sports Radio, Randy Bergen, Bobby Hall, Barry Gibson, Doug Holton. The whole gang is here today. Matt Brandt has the weekend off. Actually, we'll see him. We will see him tomorrow. We'll get set for our SFGT tournament over at Craft Farms. Always a great place to play. If you have an opportunity, go buy them, check out the craft farms. You've got Cotton Creek and Cypress Bend, always, always in great shape. All right, let's go back to our Booms Thai Kitchen guest line. Yeah, that's a new sponsor. Wow. From Piggly-Wiggly and Farrow. From Piggly-Wiggly and Farrow, nah, she's doing great, by the way, so. But we're going to go talk with a good friend of ours. She is the tournament director for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, as well as one of the rules official for this year's President's Cup, which will be held at Royal Montreal, Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, our good friend, John Drago. John, how are you doing, pal? I'm doing great. Randy, how are you? Well, we're doing good. What hole are you on? I'm on standing on the 9T right now, coming off a bad three-hole stretch on 6, 7, and 8. So we need to turn around. And listen, we know that you're talking with us from the golf course, so whenever you've got to make a hit, go ahead and get back on with us. But before we talk to some Texas football with you, let's talk a little about this President's Cup. Of course, this will happen on the 24th through the 29th in Canada. How exciting is it to go? Is this your first time to Canada, or have you been there before? Yeah, it's my first time to Canada, first time to actually work on a PGA of America. It's a PGA tour event, actually, so we're really looking forward to it. Which should be a lot of fun, and we're going to be watching you. So if the cameras happen to go swing your way, wave at us, because we'll be waving back for sure. So you guys like to win? Well, look, obviously we found out that Keegan Bradley is now not an assistant captain. He's going to be on the team. They put Brent Snedeker to replace him, so look, obviously I think that America gets the win, but I'm kind of pulling for Keegan. Yeah, I think you got it. Good one. I heard it. Oh, it sounded good. It sounded good. It sounded good. Yeah, it's all right. No, I think you're right. I think the world's going to be rooting for Keegan after the missing the Ryder Cup last year and being on the team right now. And being our next Ryder Cup captain, he's definitely going to get a lot of attention out there. Of course, Jim Furek is the US team captain. For the international team is the lefty former master or a master winner, Mike Weir. So it should be a lot of fun. How do you go win and approach this? We'll give you the team lineups here who's on each team at just a moment. But how do you go win and approach this? Because you've done a lot of celebrity events, you've done the Olympics, you've done some of these bigger named events. How do you approach this? Yeah, you know, it's interesting because we don't, we here in the United States, we don't work a lot of match play. So to be honest, what I've been doing over the last few weeks is rushing up on match play and we don't play a lot of four ball and force them. And it's also different because you've got 24 players instead of 156. So instead of going in and being in charge of a hole and watching all 156 players come through and kind of knowing what the hazards are on that hole and where trouble might be and kind of what the polls played like all day. You're getting to something new because you're going to follow a group all day long. You're going to be a referee for a single match and you're going to go with them the entire way. So it's a completely different dynamic, but one that I really enjoy, worked the Ryder Cup back in 2016. And I'm really looking forward to it. Yeah. Hey, John, Bobby Hall here. Yeah, Matt, I'd like to tell folks out there, I was just going to say that stroke play and match player will be a little bit different. The rules are different. So you do have to brush up on your match play. You just mentioned that you're your first time to work with the PGA tour. Who else from the PGA of America is going to be there to assist you? Yeah, it's funny to say that. So it's we've got about I think I looked at yesterday is about 22 referees that are going to be there, most of which are PGA tour officials that you see every week, but we have invited officials from the PGA of America, the RNA, the masters, the USDA, some kind of all of golf organizations. You know, when you have big international events like this are represented, but I am the only one going from our PGA of America committee. So really looking forward to representing our our PGA of America badge body and doing the best that we can out there. That's great. You know, when John gets together with these guys from all around the world, the USDA and the Royal NIH, if they share terminology, which leads, you don't know, you all don't or not preview out there and golf, but this leads to some of the decisions in the rule book for the decisions book because they all have different things that have happened over the years. Of course, they strive to make the golf a little bit simpler. So proud of you, John, and have a great time there and I look forward to seeing you down the road. And now I'm going to turn it over to Randy, because I know he wants to talk some technical stuff. Well, yeah, I do. I know that I know that Doug's going to have a question. We're visiting with John Dragot, tournament director for the CJ Cup, Byron Nelson, also one of the officials this year for the U.S. President's Cup, Doug. Yeah, John, I know you're working in an official capacity at the President's Cup, but break this down for us a little bit while you're playing golf there. What do you see as the key match-ups or the key players that could play a big role in this thing when it comes up in a week or two? Yeah, I think it's going to be a really fascinating match, to be honest. I think it's going to be a close match. I think with the United States taking all four majors this year, I think the international teams coming to play, I got to give a shout-out to Taylor Pender with our CJ Cup, Byron Nelson champion on the international team. But the way that Scottie played down the stretch and Zander and Colin, I just really think that U.S. team is stacked and it's going to be fun to watch to see how coming from that underdog position how the international team does. You know, we talk about the SEC a lot whenever you look at that U.S. team. There's a lot of SEC guys on there taking Scottie Scheffler. You got Sam Burns, Brian Harman, Russell Henley. So yeah, the SEC will be represented very well. This is with John Drago right here on Southern Fairways. Let's turn and talk a little Texas football. Is it time for you to hit again? Is it your turn? That is not my turn. I'm all good. I'm just going to walk up to the ground. We just want to make sure that we're not interrupting that golf game. Yeah. We're all good. Talk a little bit about Texas. It's not a big threat today. Obviously, UTSA. Bobby, I think you said they got beat by the 100 points last week. Yeah. They didn't play very well. They were playing another Texas team, but UTSA usually has a pretty good squad and it's fun for teams to go to San Antonio and play, but I think Texas has a big edge today. Yeah. Go ahead, John. Yeah. No, I think you're right. Actually, in fact, I'm going to go to the TC's game tonight and probably watch a little more hard to keep up with the score on my phone because I think today they roll unless they've got it. Unless they've done something and lost their mind after last week's day went. Well, John, let's talk about it. You were at the big house last week as Texas does get the win over Michigan 31-12, the final in that. Tell us a little bit about that experience. I'll tell you, the last two years that second game of September, I've had pretty good experience. There you go. There you go. It was a bucket list for me to go see a game at the big house. We've actually got some family members that went to Michigan. My wife's father went there, so it was almost emotional. It's crazy. The stadium looks so small from the outside and then you walk in. You walk in on like row 77 and go down. It was quite the experience. And just like I said last year, I had high expectations. They were exceeded. And then we won, so that made it even better. So let me just set this up. For those of you that maybe do not know, Barry, you may not know this last year, we arranged all this beautiful setup for John to come in. We're going to go to Tuscaloosa. We're not going to be braggish or, you know, but we're going to be like, Texas is coming in Tuscaloosa. You don't have a chance, right? The bus ride back for me and Bobby wasn't so good. John just kind of giggles the whole way home for four hours. I bet. I was a very gracious winner. Yes, you were. Yes, you were. One of the things we're talking a lot about here is we got, we got Millrill at the right time last year and we got Michigan at the right time this year, so. It's all about what we do now. Oh my goodness, yes, you did. Well, I'll tell you, it should be, it'll be fun watching Texas. I mean, the ranked, the ranked second you got, now next week you got University of what you got. Louisiana Monroe, I think then Mississippi State's kind of get into the, yep, then you get into that SEC run Mississippi State, Oklahoma, then you get to tackle Georgia. Now, I got to be honest with you, I don't know if Georgia's quite, their schedule is not that tough. I don't think and it'll be interesting, Texas probably picks up the number one spot that week. Well, I hope you're right, obviously, you know, having a big game against Oklahoma, ahead of it, even Oklahoma's a little bit down, that's always a crazy game and with it being the week before Georgia, want to make sure you're not looking ahead, all that, but we got to get there first. What do we think about it's going to happen up in Wisconsin at Camp Randall today? Well, I mean, Alabama was a 16 and a half point favorite and obviously anything can happen. I think that we need to be paying attention to every play and Barry, you can probably address this better than any of us in the room here. Alabama's got to watch every play, every play counts and you can't take anything for granted. Yeah, that crowd's going to be crazy. I tell you that that environment up there is one of those stadiums that's going to be very loud. They're not going to sit down the whole game, so Alabama's going to have to deal with the noise factor, you know, in that environment. So, but I think, you know, after they settle in and get going, their athletes should take it over and win the game. Barry, did you ever play when you were at Southern Miss, did you ever play against Texas? Because I know Matt Brown was your friend. Matt Brown coached me. Yeah, but no, we never did. You know, we played Florida, we played Alabama, played Auburn, played a lot of the big dogs, but we never, never played Texas while I was at Southern Miss. Okay. Thank God. Gotcha. Hey, let me ask John a question. Yeah. John, you still there? Yeah. Look, I want to know. I want to know. And I like Texas. I'm a Texas fan because, like I said, Matt Brown, when he was there as a head coach, Matt coached me at Southern Miss, and we were great friends today. So, it kind of tells you how old he is, but go ahead. Yeah. I digress. Yeah. We're both old. Matt got a birthday last week. I texted him and wished him happy birthday. So, we're all getting older. But how cool is it at Texas, you got, you know, yours is a quarterback. How cool is it? He's a, he's a Heisman candidate. How cool is it to know that if something happens to him, you bring in arch-mani to replace him. That's not a bad, that's not a bad backup. No, it's an unbelievable backup. It's crazy to think. And it really tells a lot about his character and who he is, and, you know, I'd like to say what starts building there in Texas, the fact that he's been willing to fit these two years. And he'll talk a lot about how he's developed. But I'll tell you what, when he gets in again and hope, you know, he might get in tonight. We hope. It's all, it's all goes according to Brian. Yeah. It's exciting that people are, people are really behind yours and we know he's got a Heisman campaign and what he did single handedly at the Michigan game was so impressive. But we don't skip a beat when arch comes in and quite frankly the crowd just gets energized when it happens. They love him, don't they? Yeah, they really do. They support you, they support yours, but they love Manning. There you go. That's a great way to look at it. Yeah. We're gonna list our time is up. Thank you for taking time to be with us. And we got to be honest with you, that was a lot of fun playing, listening to you play golf. I think that's the first time I've ever done that Bobby. That's the first time we've done that, right? No, hey, man, safe, safe travels to Canada will be certainly watching the U.S. President's Cup and, and, and much success up there, my friend. All right. Hey, just one quick thing. A little drive left on the green one putt birdie. It was no problem here on number nine. And I'll let you know, and I hope that everybody's safe from all the hurricane and stuff up there. Yeah. Well, I appreciate it. Maybe you want us to do this all or often, you know, when you're playing, okay, I got to call, I got to call my radio show. All right, John, boy, we'll talk to you, huh? Sounds great, man. I appreciate it. Okay. I think you were saying he's got a ski in there, Bobby. Yeah. Kindly. Like you did yesterday. Greg right there, tournament director for the CJ Cup, Byron Nelson, also one of the officials for this year's U.S. President's Cup. That will be in Montreal. That will be fun. I mean, right now the weather up there is about 74 degrees. Sounds nice. Nice. And, and Arch Manning, the highest paid backup quarterback in the country. What's he making? To me? No, more than that, I think. Yeah. Yeah. Really? Yeah. Yeah. He is a Texas, right? And a Manning. Yeah. Yeah. John's gone, right? Okay. Steve's John's gone. Okay. So we can say this. Last year when we took him to, uh, to that, to Tuscaloosa, who did we get to me, Bobby? Remember the little old fella, one of the, the biggest donor for Texas football? Oh, yeah. Correct. He's on the, uh, board for the CJ Cup out there in Dallas and he had a little party right there by the stadium that couldn't have been more hospitable. He was, he was a nice, I said, man, I won't give his name. Can I get a picture? Absolutely not. So. Oh my goodness. All right. Hey, we'll take a quick time out when we come back, we'll put the wraps on this edition of Southern Fairway Sports Radio. All right, Barry, who is that? Oh, gosh, the stretch. You got me. Barry, straight. Okay. Oh, no. You would think that's who it is, right? It's not. It's a knock on. It's called, it's called the Rio Brothers. They're from. Wow. Rio Brothers. Yeah. Yeah. They're from the Philippines. Do you have their CD? I don't have their CD, but I could go online and get what, would you like a CD of them? No. I just wonder why you got that. Yeah. Because we're listening to it. I'm like, this sounds just like them. It does. Yeah. And it's not impressive. It's not them. No. No. It's called the Oreo Brothers. I thought you meant it was a knock off or something. Well, it is a knock off. Yeah. It's not, if it's not the original dire straits that it did not go off. Okay. That was my point. Why did you bring that up? Because they sounded good. Because they sounded good. You're confusing me. Really? The music is the music master. I can promise you. There's no doubt. By the way, they got the hackers tour down there. Good luck to all those guys. How's it playing to you guys? Yep. Today and tomorrow. Tomorrow we have our Southern Fairways. As I mentioned down at craft forums excited to get down there. I mean, the hospitality that they give us down there is absolutely fantastic. Ryan, Chad, the whole gang down there do a great job. I have a friend of my wife and I. Some friends went by the other night and said commented how good it was at Boom's Kitchen there in Piggy Wiggly. So she's doing well, man. She can cut that girl. I can't understand what she says half the time, but she can cut. I know that. And you give us a smile. Oh, my goodness. Oh, my goodness. Hey, the Miracle League of Coastal Alabama, which is the Gus Shores Lions Club, an Orange Beach Lions Club, and the town of Sommerdale are joining forces to build a Miracle League baseball field and a fully inclusive, boundless playground, all right? It's really, really neat. If you'd like more information, you can go to miracleleaguecoastalalabama.com, they're raising money, Bobby and I know the Lions Club, whether it be in Gus Shores or Orange Beach or Fair Hope, they all do a fantastic job. They do and we have a tournament coming up October 6 for the Lions Club in our area and they raise a lot of money to help kids out. We'd love to have you come. That'll be Sunday, the 6 will be in the afternoon, have a nice meal during play and they have a lot of door prizes and also some special gifts out there to give away. And then Knights of Columbus, we have another event coming up with the Fair Hope Knights of Columbus group will be in November and that's going to be a fun event and another fundraiser. So, have a lot going on at Quill Creek, we're back in really, really good shape. We had a great game yesterday afternoon, we had a lot of fun with that, the bullpen's out every morning. Wednesday we have seniors, Tuesday we have ladies day and then we have our social hour with our seniors, called the Nick Center from the Fair Hope Nix Club downtown. So we always have something going on. We always have a game just about every day. We close on Thursday mornings for our maintenance staff to get some work done, but it's back in great shape. Love to have you come down, got some new range balls out just this week, which are nice to have. Some of those other ones have been kind of old and flat but got new cart paths. We have a new cart fleet, make the tea time where we have a lot of play, a lot of people moving into the Baldwin County area as you know. So make the tea time at your local club and please make the tea time at Quill Creek. We're getting busy and the range is full just about every day, but we're growing and back in great shape. So come see us at Quill Creek, we're 10 miles south of I-10 on 181, just past Walmart. Look for the flash and yellow light and love to have you come down there. Just mention, and Doug, you might have interest in this, if you can go into Quill Creek Golf Club, you don't want to play golf? It's okay. Go play pickleball. You can't--I don't play pickleball, Randy. Pickleball courts are over nine o'clock, there's a nine-way lights. There you go. There you go. There you go. There you go. Before you can get a power aid if you need one and we have-- Boy, you mentioned the Nick Center, when I was singing with Doc Rogers and the Rock Dodgers, we played there at the Nick Center. Nick Center. You know, and they didn't invite us back. They said we were too loud. We invited back at the Nick Center. Wow. But we did play there one time. Hey, let's look around the SEC. Some big games going on. Of course, we mentioned the Alabama, Wisconsin game that happens at 11 o'clock on Fox. Another big game, I think you need to keep your eye on. You might want to be flipping it between Fox and ABC. LSU, number 16, travels over to Columbia, South Carolina, take on those uh-- The Game Cocks. The Game Cocks of South Carolina. Keep your eye on that one. I think South Carolina can win that thing. Oh, absolutely. Doug, you have no-- Okay, I thought you were going to say something. That's another one of those places, Randy, at that stadium at South Carolina, when that rooster gets to crowing over the PA system man, it is loud. I have been in there before. That stadium in zone is big too. Oh, Lord, in the train that's right outside of the stadium, I've been in it, where they get to go in and eat, you know, and it's a very cool environment. So I tell you what, LSU's got the hands full when they go in there. Yeah, I don't think there's a question about that. Number 24, Boston College will travel to Missouri to take on number six, the Tigers of Missouri. That'll be at 1145 on the SEC Network. Two lane in Oklahoma, Oklahoma ranked 15th, that'll be at 2.30 on ESPN. If there's a game you want to stop at and talk about, let me know. Texas A&M will travel to Gainesville, 2.30 on ABC. I think this is a must win for Napier. Doug, your thoughts on that? Well, I think every win is a must win for Napier right now. I'm down about that. This is going to be an instant game to watch two pretty evenly matched teams, I would think. And yeah, Florida's got to win A&M needs to win. They do. Elko needs that win. So, and I thought, I think we did kind of skip over Missouri there in Boston College, but we're going to find out if Missouri is for real, I think today because Boston College, the games I've seen them, they look pretty good. Now, didn't they beat Florida State? Yeah, they beat Florida State, yeah, they sure did. Manhattan, though. And Napier, the Napier, you mentioned him, head coach at Florida, it's not the hot seat anymore. It's scorching right now. They're really calling for his head down there in Florida. So, yeah, he's got to win today. I think Mitch McConnell last week said it was the volcano season. I agree. UAB will be at Arkansas, that'll be at 3.15 on the SEC Network. Ole Miss, no, it should not have a problem. They traveled over to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a place you're very familiar with Doug, as he'll take on West, excuse me, Wake Forest. That will be at 5.30 on the CW Network. We mentioned the Texas game, that'll be at 6 o'clock on ESPN as he'll host UTSA. Vanderbilt will be at Georgia State, 6 o'clock on ESPN, number one, Georgia. We'll travel up to Lexington, Kentucky to take on the Wildcats. That will be at 6.30 on ABC. Could there be an upset in there? I don't know. Kentucky's struggling a little bit. I mean, obviously they got beat by South Carolina last week. Yeah. They didn't get beat. They got a drill. They got hammered. Yeah, I mean, but I have a feeling that Georgia's going to get beat here somewhere. I'm not, Georgia fans, I'm not saying that in an ugly way. I just got that feeling. I don't know that they've got quite-- Right. Where do you get that? You don't think Georgia's playing well? I don't know. There's something just dead. Yeah. I think so. Well, that wants to start a corner back this week. You got arrested for driving 106 miles an hour, so they won't have him, so there'll be a backup corner. He'll be back in today's game. He'll probably be back in this week. But if I had to pick right now, I'd say Georgia and Texas are the two best teams in the league. It's what everybody's thinking as far as the championship game. It's early. Nobody knows anything about anything right now. But I think that's what people are thinking, interested in, to know what you guys are thinking on that. Yeah. Well, I think right now, Texas is playing pretty good, and I think-- But not Georgia. Georgia's playing fine. I'm not-- I just have a gut feeling. Something's going to happen to Georgia. You have something on Georgia here, Andy. What is it? I can't tell you. I cannot tell you. So if you've got those two to the power house, if those two to the power, who do you put in third? Bama? Ole Miss? Mm-hmm. Yeah, probably Ole Miss. Yep. New Mexico will be at Auburn. We talked about that game at 6.30 on the ESPN2. Auburn should get the win on that. Toledo at Mississippi State, 6.30 on the ESPNU, and Kent State will be at Tennessee. That's somebody to keep you out on. That's a nice team. Tennessee. You've been there. Yep. You were a coach there. Yep. You were in the SEC ring there. Yep. But Tennessee is loaded, guys. I tell you, they can score on anybody. And their defense is playing well, flying around to the ball. Yeah, that's the team you better keep out on this Tennessee. Barry, thanks for hanging out with us, man. Oh, man. I enjoyed it. Thank you, Randy. I appreciate it, brother. Anytime. Barry is always, man. You and I will be riding again together tomorrow. Would you like to drive or would you like me to drive? I would like to drive. Thank you. Oh, and then before I forget it, I look forward to seeing you Thursday. Oh, yeah, Bob. With my family, you'll get to meet a lot of my families over there. Hall of Fame. Barry's going to the Hall of Fame there in most points. So congratulations on that. Good. Golf clap. Thanks for being here. Always fun, Randy. All right, my man. We thank you for hanging out with us right here on Southern Fairway Sports Radio. Thanks to our producer, Steve Stanley. Remember, let's hit a knee, say your prayer. God bless America. You got to get out and vote. I promise you. I'll do that this year. All right. See you next week. Bye-bye, everybody. [MUSIC PLAYING] [MUSIC PLAYING]
