And good Saturday morning to you as we welcome you to the Thompson Tractor Prep Sports Report. We're coming to you live from the Eastern Shore Toyota and Hyundai Studios located right here in South Alabama. I am your host Randy Bergen joined by coach Rick Cleveland coach. How you doing my man? Doing well Randy. Thank you for well you didn't take my money yesterday. So I nobody took anybody's money yesterday. I think we won money yesterday. We won money. Thanks to Terry. Most of all. Always fun to play golf with with Terry Boa. There's no doubt about it. Hey Mark is on the road today. He's going to see his mom up in Birmingham. So we wish them safe travels. So coach we we went to the bullpen. We pulled out the righty and retired high school coach, college coach, our good friend, coach Barry Gibson and coach. Thank you for taking time to be with us today. We're happy that you're here and let me say Thursday night's going to be a big night for you Hall of Fame over Mississippi. Thank you Randy. I appreciate it. Yeah I am looking forward to that. Moss Point High School is going to induct me into their sports Hall of Fame Thursday night. I got a lot of family coming. I had a lot of tickets to get. What about Fernando's? He's coming. I invited Fernando. He's coming. He's going to sit at our table. It's going to be a big night. But man, I'm just glad to be here with you and Rick. I appreciate the opportunity. Well it'll be a lot of fun. We've got we got to get into some scores. But coach before we do that, let's go ahead and set the table coming up at the bottom of the hour. We'll talk with the Viagra wolves. Coach John McKenzie is going to be on with us undefeated after a big win over UMS Wright 30 to 14 last night. Yeah John McKenzie and his return to Viagra. He's a state championship coach there and also a long time high school and college coach. He's made the rounds around state of Alabama as a coach and then he's come home to Viagra. So there everybody's thinking good. I can tell you that. There's no question about it at 845. You'll have our leadership program at 915. We'll talk with coach Steve Masks, the head football coach for the Bobcats of Theodore. They are 0 and 3 going into Thursday night. They get up their first win of the season over my Alma Mater Baldwin County. A good win for them 28-7. You know coach they their first three games. If you look at it and you just say oh they're 0 and 3 that doesn't sound good. But when you look at the scores they were all very tight scores. I mean just like a point or two. Yeah they played three really good football teams and and when you break it down to another thing is Theodore has been a predominant run team. Right. And Steve is trying to add a throwing game into it and you know they're they're kind of finding themselves and I think now they'll course their schedules not any easier as you go on 6A region one is one of the toughest. One of the toughest. It's a tough one. It's a tough one. No doubt it. At the bottom of our second hour we'll talk with Jackson's head football coach Cody Floyd nor they had a nice win over Baker on Thursday night 2013. Yeah they're the number one ranked team in 4A and they are deservedly so I can tell you right now. Jeff Kelly told me after they had beat them like 35 to 27. He said coach I don't see anybody beating those guys the rest of the year. So I said Jeff you crowning them the 4A state champions. He said well I'm just telling you it'd be hard for anybody to beat them. They're pretty stinking good. Yeah yeah no doubt. And then we'll close out the hour with the Camp Grace segment. You will not be here. Mark will not be here but we have a special pastor that's going to do our Camp Grace segment. Yeah Chad Stafford a former player at Daphne High School. And boy you talking about a guy that's got a dynamite profession of faith. He's just a wonderful one for man. He's a lead pastor at Coastal Church here in Daphne. He's also the chaplain for both Daphne High School and Basside Academy. One amazing man and I'm sure that Camp Grace segment will be fine. Yeah it really will be. Merengo 0. South Choctaw 44. Mackintosh 0. Spring Garden 48. Woodville 0. University Charter 34. Holy Spirit Catholic 6. Valley Head 50. Idor 7. Verbena 40. Billingsley 32. Vine up 58. Donahoe 6. Waterboro 40. Fayetteville 20. And Woodland over Gaston 22 to 7. Coach four weeks into this and I'm looking at some of these scores and it's like they're just I mean over it seems like 75% of those were blowouts. Yeah and that's what's happening and the thing about it is is we get into region play. It'll calm down a little bit. They're playing teams that they hope they can win. You know that's what coaches are doing now. They're trying to coach this word about being fired. I'm just telling. I mean they're getting as many games on there as they feel like they can win out of region. You know when you look at it they're the three schools from the Alabama Independent Schools that joined this year. Lee Scott Academy, Glenwood out of Phoenix City and Otago Academy all four or three of those are undefeated. Really? So they jumped in from AISA into the HSAA. Truthfully those three along with Bessemer Academy have been the big dogs in the AISA. There was a attempt a couple of years ago to intermingle with the AHSAA and cross I guess cross the road and play each other. I don't know how that got shot down. When Steve Saverice was executive director that they had a plan to do that and it fell through. So I don't see how the AISA can continue to coexist financially without getting into the AHSAA. That's interesting to me and you know you've got some coaches that have been in some of these AISA schools forever and you know that's it's a different brand of football. Bobby Carr who left Ed Wood and now he's at Carver Montgomery. Yeah and he dabbled in you know he came to Alberta as an assistant coach and then he got the job that's a slam dunk higher to get Bobby Carr at Carver. When they merge those two schools Carver and Sydney Lanier and that's just in Bobby Carrkey coach. I don't tell you right now offensively. They're undefeated right now. Yeah well and he's got a lot of players. I'm telling you he's loaded. He's loaded. And you can tell if you're going up 65 from here to Birmingham you go right there on the left. You see and they put a lot of put a lot of work into that school. Yeah when they're building like a 4.5 million dollar fieldhouse now. All right hey let's take a quick timeout. When we come back we're going to talk to John McKenzie the head football coach for the Wolves of Iger. They're undefeated they had a big win last night over UMS Wright. We'll break that game down with coach McKenzie right after this. Welcome back to the Thompson Tractor Prep Sports Report. The Pops Market communication lines are open at 251-343-0106. Here's your host Randy Bergen with coach Rick Cleveland and coach Mark Leseter. And we welcome back to the Thompson Tractor Prep Sports Report. We're coming to you live from the Eastern Shore Toyota Monday. Genesis Room right here in Daphne, Alabama. I'm glad to have you on board with us. I am Randy Bergen along with coach Rick Cleveland. Coach Mark Laster is on assignment. So we bring in coach Barry Gibson. Time to go to our Pops Midtown Communication line and welcome in. Head football coach for the Wolves of Iger, coach John McKenzie, coach. Thank you for taking time to be with us. Congratulations on a big win last night over the UMS Wright Bulldogs 30-14. I mean right now and we got to talk about this offense Rick because they're averaging 33.5 points per game. And coach I got to tell you that's pretty impressive right there. Congratulations on the win. Well thank you very much and I appreciate you guys for having me. Now yes we're playing pretty good right now and if they're early in the season I think our guys are still learning what we're trying to do offensively, defensively and special teams but we've got a great group of talented guys and they make them coach them a lot easier. You know coach and you're in your new stadium. Kind of give us a rundown of how much that means to not only your football team, your school, but that community to have that stadium because that's the thing of pride and you can see it in your kids' faces. Yes that's that's big. I mean I think that's a great accomplishment for Mobile County Public Schools to give like a stadium. It's just good to fitting y'all but you know my first time here you know every home game area away game we had to really get on the bus and it was all the way games for us and just to if you leave something you couldn't go back and get it but you know you have to get to the stadium and wait because you still got the wait time till you get warmed up. But it's good to just sit in your office or have the guys to sit in the locker room and just get tape when they want to get tape, get dressed. It's no rush. If you leave something you run back to the locker room and pick it up and then to have the atmosphere of a home crowd like we do with our community and our alumni base that supports us so greatly. It's just good to just come to a stadium and you just got a bunch of people right there supporting you and just to walk through that little gateway that we walk through. It's a great feeling. I enjoyed it this my second time and I got to have really taken pride in defending that home field and we've been able to win every game that we've been able to play in there and that's just a great feeling and a great opportunity for our kids and our community. Yeah I know it's got a great feeling for them and the whole community for for sure we're visiting with Coach John McKenzie the head football coach for the Wolves of Iger Barry. Hey yeah coach this is Barry Gibson let me ask you something obviously you got some talent on your team but would you consider your team a are you senior loaded with a lot of seniors are you young or is a pretty good mix right now. Well we loaded with seniors this is the largest group of seniors that I have have been a part of in my high school career we got 26 seniors on our team and a lot of these guys played for me when they was in the ninth grade so they got an idea of what to expect and how we operate and run our program so you know it's a guys that just have come together over the four-year period that they've been there and we got a lot of good young ninth graders as well as 10th grade as I junior class was small my first time there we had 12 seniors and like I said this time we got 26 I think next year we got like 12 juniors on well this year we got 12 juniors on a team so I think things will go back to normal next year. Coach you know I look at Carlos Benjamin and watching it last night and this is a young man that's got I mean he's got breakaway speed but at the same time I saw him on two different occasions make one heck of a block to spring another runner that's got to be pleasing for you to have a running back who also will block. Yeah I did a big time player you know that's what I'm more concerned about because he could catch the ball we don't have to really substitute him when we want to go far wide we could put him in the slot and uh any and we keep him in the back field when we need protection uh UMS Ray did a great job of putting pressure on us with with a fireman front and he have to block off the head so I thought he did an exceptional job and you know what he could do when he get the ball in his hand so uh we would we got on to the slow start running the football but late in the game we really needed a play when things look like it was going kind of bad for us offensively we had our first two possession we were throwing out and the third possession you know we were trying to get our defense some rest because they stayed on the field a long time in the second half and uh we gave him the ball twice and instead of him uh making it a five or six-way drive he's making a two-play drive and expect was and put the game away really with that 30 to I think it was 30 to seven around that time when he put that game away for us. We're visiting with Vyker head coach John McKenzie uh John I mentioned the uh the pointers averaging on offense a little over 33 let's talk about that defense a little bit more you only give it up less than uh less than seven points you had four turnovers last night talking about that defense. I mean I from day one I thought on paper that I defense was probably one of the best in the state uh we just we got talent all around in air position on that side of the ball and uh we got a lot of young talent on the defense now I all friends have seen you heavy but I defense it led by some 10 graders you know mixed in with some seniors but uh we feel good about our defense and that's why I think our offense is off to a great start because we have to practice against them four times a day and then when we get a chance to play at a game we don't get that same kind of feeling because right uh they just they just get they just get us ready to play uh from the from a defense standpoint when we going up against them uh and they're pretty good they they gonna be good against the run we've got great shots in our defense line we got great speed in our line back to play and we got some great color guys then we got great coaches on our side of this on defense ball also so it's just a combination of everything and I'm really hanging your hat and like I always tell folks I'm a firm believer that uh all trans-wing games but defense win championships. Hey coach let's talk about that third phase special teams uh you know special teams uh win a close game for you but it'll get you beat too uh talk about uh your yeah talk about your kick game now when you score a lot of points like you guys do you it's not that big of a deal but you know sooner or later that sooner or later there's going to be a close game where it's going to come down to an extra point a field goal uh maybe a punt you know to back them up so talk a little bit about your special teams and how they've performed so far this year. I mean I think I kick or played in a substance game last night I think that's the area that you know being at Varga Hospital it's hard to get a quality kicker a quality punter and even a quality loan snapper so we struggled in those areas uh a lot of other schools that have better kids that those were listed and do it well but I thought last night I'd kick or perform exceptional well he made his kicks uh he placed the ball uh we had some struggles with our punting game and that was a concern going up against you and that's right we figured that if they had a chance to beat us it was going to be in them 15 to 20 players that special teams have to hold up and uh I just think we did you know out of all the phases of the game I think that area is still a stream maybe a D minus a D plus but uh we got to get better at our protections we got to get better at our coverages and then we got to get better a place in the ball where we wanted to be kicked and uh you know these kids learned different things about the game uh in the special teams place realizing that I think the the most important place in any football game is some 15 to 20 players that you get in special teams so I'm just praying every day we put them out on the field that it don't hurt us and last night it got closed especially in our punting game but uh I think our punter we had a uh 10 great idea trying to punt for us and I think you did an exceptional will uh under the precedent you know Miss Wright was putting on us now we're visiting with heavy ball coach for the wolves of viger john mckenzie coach uh I got you about a uh for about another minute and a half here I want to go back in and Rick had made mention of the new stadium uh it looked like it was packed you know that ums travels well and talk a little bit about the atmosphere there and we always have a tendency of looking at just what's happening on the field but talk a little bit about the peripheral around that field right I mean that's big I'd like to say we're doing this brought a great crowd and uh uh viger always show up no matter where I guess they they're accustomed to traveling so just to travel up the road or walk down the street uh it makes it a lot easier for them but they've always been strong in their support and they make they self-known when they come to a game you hit them you just don't show up and sit in sit in your seat and and sit quietly they make they self-known and then you know they have the presence and that's a real a great 12th man for us and our kids play for them our kids our kids here the the the know it they hear the chance they they they motivated by it and they they've been in that atmosphere their entire life uh even playing pop ball they've always got a great support so uh it's a it's a thing that we needed and like I said really we're at home or whether we're on the road we get that support but it's so much better when you got when you look up behind you and every seat is still on your side and uh pretty much packed on the other side also we're talking to coach john mckenzie from viker and coach I mean you look at last night you guys kicked the field goal and I'm talking about it it would have been good from 15 more yards out uh that was impressive that was really impressive yeah I yeah go ahead coach go ahead hello yes sir um go ahead and you talk about you talk about directional punting you know I don't see that anymore I see kids kicking the ball punting the ball right down the middle of the field instead of kicking it to the pile lines trying to kick it out of bounds and I saw your kid do that once last night so right that's uh yeah that's important for us not only on our playing game with our kicking game our our directional kicking and punting is based on our coverage you know and and like I said on punt return we're trying to get zero return so if we could kick the ball 30 yards out of bounds or we could kick it between the numbers and the uh sideline that's what we want to cover it and well it's kick off we try that we don't want to kick that ball down the middle of the field because you got a three-way goal you have a three-way goal if we put it to one side we're gonna put our coverage to that side and and sometimes I kick a make a mistake and it hurt us uh but when we put that ball in the right spot we're with a you know play good football and that's what we're trying to do we're trying to play this one football every player is a big play we don't take no plays off and every you know we just don't say go kick the ball no you put that in the spot you don't kick off you got to kick that ball between the hash and the numbers because we don't want the ball to go out of bounds but we know our coverage don't get to that point and we try to get that with speed and we try to get that with a purpose coach our time is up we want to thank you for taking time to be with us you got a big one coming up against citronale who lost an overtime last night 26 28 26 to Williamson good luck in that game we're going to have you back on the show real soon all right thank you very much thank you guys for having me there you go coach john mckenzie head coach for the wolves of biker big win last night over ums right 30 to 14 we'll take a timeout when we come back coach cleveland has got our leadership segment welcome back to the tomsantractor prep sports report psr is live every saturday from eight until 10 a.m now back to the show and welcome back to the tomsantractor prep sports reports we are glad that you are on board with us uh on a beautiful saturday morning coach it is time for our leadership segment it's hard for me to get into this song to to dive into why we'll do this Steve our producer can you turn that up just a little bit let's go and listen to that there you go it is kind of it is kind of hard to it doesn't have the same effect unless more it's here you know i mean whenever you see those dizzy heights me and mark have never experienced that i heard that you know we oftentimes in high school sports uh parents and boosters and all the people involved in programs always wonder who does what berry you've dealt with this for a long time and i think one of the hardest jobs that there is in the state of alabama is being a high school athletic director if you do it the way it's supposed to be done now some people don't um you know there's just some in our business it just you know they take the title to get the pay and then they just filter out or give certain certain uh coaches responsibilities and but the athletic director is a huge huge job in high school particularly on seven a level uh or even six a some of the responsibilities of a high school athletic director organizing all the school sports functions every sport um 26 when i was an athletic director 26 sports now there there's up to 30 in some schools and you got to organize every one of those uh you hire and you mentor coaches that's you know when you hire young coaches it's your responsibility as the athletic director to mentor them to teach them the ropes the ins and outs and and the ups and downs of being a coach and help them get through the the monitoring of their program um overseeing all those facilities managing the sports department scheduling budgeting promotion compliant with all the rules of the Alabama High School Athletic Association and all the regulations that you have to follow it's like you know we used to do two a days all the time it was in the morning you'd have about six o'clock and in the afternoon you'd have them there at five and you'd be in four pads both times then we broke it down and we went into where you could do it one time a day and then the second time you were limiting on how much time you can even be out there and now most schools aren't even practicing two a days don't do it they just don't do it anymore and probably the hardest thing for an athletic director is working with the athletes parents and other staff to ensure the program is beneficial and appropriate for all participants now one of the things that's not listed on my list here is cheerleaders there's been a lot of talk in the last couple of months about cheerleading not being a sport a consider to sport by the Alabama High School Athletic Association it is it's not a not it's a non-sanctioned activity is what it is it's not sanctioned by the AHSA and uh it's it's not excuse me it's it's not recognized by the National Federation of High Schools and I think that may be one of the hardest jobs an athletic director has to do is to is to deal with and not deal with I mean they're wonderful people that you're dealing with the girls in the cheerleader sponsor but trying to make sure that everything is on a level playing field because that's when you have parents involved and you get sometimes we're hiring cheerleader coaches that have never cheerleading or and we've been lucky boy UMS right we have we've got a sponsor there that is a former Alabama cheerleader a tremendous tremendous tremendous tremendous sponsor but Barry talk a little bit about I really want to do this with you here because I want you to talk a little bit about the responsibilities of an athletic director and the problems you face well there's so many of them Rick you named a lot of them uh one thing that you you may have said or may not but uh one huge responsibility is fundraising yeah you are constantly trying to raise money for your programs because there's just in some schools they're just not any money you know designated for athletics and you got to go raise it particularly in a in a school that has no facilities a new school that's trying to get started from ground floor no money you got a fun raise and that's that's always been a huge thing but uh no I used to have monthly uh athletic department meetings when I was the eddy I bring you know all coaches of all sports and that's a time where you know you want to make sure everybody is on the same page yeah you know they've got to follow your league you know you can't have one coach support what you're doing and then two coaches over here cutting you throw down in the community it just won't work yeah so you got it I used to bring all those guys and and the female coaches of where everybody uh together and we would have a meeting and we would talk about that supporting each other and I think one problem the ad has is trying to get to several events to support those coaches you know you know in spring particularly yeah I remember when I was at spanish fort I'll tell you this there was one day I left I went to a baseball game Tommy Walker was having a baseball game I stayed a few innings I left I went to a softball game you know that they were having I left that there was a tennis match going on I tried to get to the tennis match and it was amazing the next day at school every one of those coaches even though I didn't stay for the whole thing I tried to hit as many as I could every one of those coaches came up said coach Gibson thank you so much for coming by yeah and supporting us and that's important but it's hard when you got like you said so many sports you got to spread the love but as an ad I mean it's it really good stuff but you got to do it it's tough and you know it means a lot to those kids too absolutely kids see the athletic director there they know that their sports imported in the leadership to the leadership of their athletic program so those are some of the things I wanted to talk about about an athletic director because and I was lucky Terry Curtis may be the best I've ever worked with every every month there was a meeting and if you were out of line doing something that was hurting another program in any shape form or fashion Terry would call him out absolutely and say well he wouldn't do it publicly but I mean with all of us but he'd say I need to talk to you about this and and that's why you have to do it you have to run it like a business because it is a big big business now and I'm a proponent especially in 6a and 7a of having a person with an administration degree and a person outside of coaching who has coached before to be your athletic director I just don't think your head football coach has enough time to be the athletic director and I just I just think that we've got to go in the direction of a separate athletic director it's the CEO that's what it is in the 7a schools in the 6a schools full full-time job yeah let me let me I know I'm leaving but let me close with this if you have a breakdown when you call or go see our buddies at premier collisions I'm telling you go see Kim or Chris or Tyler at 1177 Sledge Drive 2 5 1 4 7 8 45 100 I can promise you they're gonna treat you like family each and every time you go see them that's premier collision 1177 Sledge Drive 101 North Schillinger coach good luck to you when we come back we're gonna have Steve Mass coach florinoy coated florinoy from Jackson we've got that set up for you in the second hour coming to you live the Thompson tractor prep sports report presented by alpha here's your host Randy Bergen with coach Rick Cleveland and coach Mark Leseter and welcome into the second hour of the Thompson tractor prep sports report we are coming to you live from the eastern shore Toyota and Hyundai studios located right here in south Alabama I am Randy Bergen coach Rick Cleveland and he is on assignment now coach Mark Laster also in assignment so we went to the bullpen we brought in the right he's uh he's our ace and a whole coach Barry Gibson coach how you doing man I am too anointed to be disappointed there you go I'd say if I was doing any better I'd be twins well then I've got you covered on that side of it so uh yeah because I am a twin yes so uh no it was good the first hour was great great to talk with uh coach John McKenzie a viger well I tell you they're playing some good football and you know and one of the things I think coach too is the fact whenever you get into a new stadium just the vibe of having something brand new really and you I mean you've been there you've experienced that it it does so much for the community it certainly does a lot for the athletic department more specifically for those kids going out there on that football field nothing like it uh over my 36 years of coaching Randy I've been in both situations where well you know you're out of school you don't have an on-campus stadium you got to travel somewhere you know to play I've been in a situation where you had to share fields you know like the Spanish Fort where you used Fairhose Field we had to use Foley's Field you know and Daphne's and you know and then on the flip side when you get a new stadium on campus it just changes everything I mean the community is excited you get bigger crowds you get more excitement leading up to the game you know you get a chance a tailgate has become a big thing absolutely absolutely and when you get that new stadium on campus and you get a bunch of people out in the parking lot or you know out in the field somewhere in their tailgate and several hours before the game it's a whole different environment then having to load up on a bus and go some where which is you know called a home game but it's really not because you're traveling to another stadium so it makes all the difference in the world yeah no doubt no doubt well congratulations to Wagner right now big win last night over UMS right 30 to 14 let's go ahead and the highlighted scores from around the state congratulations to all of you you know coming up in our next segment we're going to be talking to coach Steve mask a guy that you know very well you meant many many years ago the head coach for the bobcats of the door they started out a little tough this year 0 and 3 on the season all those very very close games one overtime real close and they get their win last night for the first time over my alma mater by one county 28 7 and win on that so that's big we're going to talk with him about that coming up in just a little bit yeah Steve and I go way back Randy been a dear friend of mine for many many years when I was a head coach at Ardmore High School in north Alabama we played against his covert county team who was very talented and he did a great great job at covert county we had a really good game against them they ended up winning but we played him tough and you know I was in a rebuilding phase of trying to rebuild or more and Steve just became a very dear friend you know I'll offer you know some coaching advice and we have been friends every since no matter where he's going I've kept up with him and just just one of the greats you know Hall of Fame coach and well deserved and you know not just a great coach he's a great person you know and so yeah so I really I love me some Steve mask and be uh be glad to talk to him here and it'll be it'll be fun he's coming up in the next segment at the bottom of the hour we'll talk with coach Cody Floyd nor the head coach for the Aggies of Jackson they defeat Baker last night 20 to 13 I'm telling you Barry you've been up there whenever Jackson comes out to play ball they mean it oh boy one of the toughest places I've ever been as a coach to play was it at Jackson yep and I'm it's until getting a while ago they did my goodness you are to see the people tell you before that game but they're very talented always been well coached harden those kids but yeah they're they're good football team they won this there's 650th win I think that's eight and all-time wins in the state so we'll talk with a coach Floyd or a little bit about that you know the place is packed you know we're staying room only yep and and I can promise you there was a lot of smoke in the air because they grill it up their boy yeah yeah they do two things I remember the tailgating and the little bitty visitors locker room that was very very small you squeezed in there that's my design that's my design is not real comfortable so but it is what it is you know we got about a minute left here uh and and you and coach clearly gonna talk a few moments ago about the importance of being an athletic director and having the right person in there in the 60 seconds that we have here very you've been there you've done it and uh as as brick said you got you need the right person in there having coaches for all these years you always always put the head football coaches the athletic director and I guess there's some additional money for that button when you put all the things that you have to do especially in a seven a school yes that's a lot for a football coach so it's it's a tremendous responsibility Randy and and as you say when you got a dual role if you're the athletic director and the head football coach so many times you've got to take your football hat off and just be the AD you know as much as I love football those those other sports deserve the attention and the support of an athletic director and you've got to make time for them you know you send football takes up a lot of time as a coach of my school you know kind of test to any coaches a head football coach it takes so much of your time but you've got to you just got to find a way to support those others those other sports and those other coaches and is it hard yes and but you got to take it seriously I can use it some guys take the AD job just for the the supplement and extra money and they really don't do much you know right and that's not fair to those other coaches and those kids and those athletes you know you know and I was always big about sharing athletes you know some coaches think you need to just you know specialize and just just play football nothing else just play basketball nothing as an AD I encourage those coaches to share those athletes with those other sports and it just makes a better environment athletic environment for the whole school well it does a lot for that athlete as well absolutely okay there's no doubt about it all right we'll take our first time at first time out of this hour don't go anywhere when we come back we'll visit with Theodore Bobco Bobcat head coach coach Steve mask his up next you will not want to miss this I can promise you Bob coach I like it as a box coach welcome back to the Thompson tractor prep sports report call or text the prep sports report at 2 5 1 3 4 3 0 1 0 6 on the pops market communication lines now back to the show and welcome back to the Thompson tractor prep sports report as we're coming to you live from the Eastern Shore Toyota and Hyundai Genesis room right here in Daphne Alabama I am Randy Bergen coach Barry Gibson in the house with us is coach Rick Cleveland coach Mark Lester now on assignment so Barry it is you and I and we're going to have a lot of fun with this gift right there there's no doubt I'm gonna say congratulations and welcome to the show good friend of ours coach Steve mask the head for ball coach for the Bobcats of Theodore coach thank you for taking time to be with us and listen hey you started out a little rough this year some very very close games but last night you get the win 28 seven over my alma mater ball in county uh man a big win not only for your team but the community as well but it was it was fun to get one under our belt you know we have had a rough start to the year and I said over the year to pretty easy I thought we had a good team and I still put a lot of good team which is uh and perform well in certain areas just count up with us the time and sort of put it all together and just follow in county thirds a lot hey coach Barry Gibson here how you doing buddy I'm doing great very I bet you hope you help doing well I'm doing a lot better thank you so much doing really good look uh talk a little bit because I've known you for years I know you love to run the football you know down people's throws for that I know balance is it is also important where are you now with this team offensively are you basically you know basically a running team uh play action pass a little bit or do you feel like you're more balanced well we're not balanced that's sure but uh I think we're a good party it took about three weeks for the dumb dumb football coach to put the best football field at tailback uh jay bush I've said all along with one of the best talents in mobile have been played safe to that sideline banger with him and he's gonna turn the cup kick off for touchdown and then take a huge figure out it might be a little easier to toss it to him to the kick get during him so we played him on the tailback play some of the wildcat quarterback he ran for two thirty one so I tell you how small I am like three guys because he got the ball I know it was a go ahead barefoot go ahead because no go ahead I'm just gonna say I know it must have been in a tense game whether it was i could say it just you can come all overnight you think I could do better than all of a sudden you think we're the best player on the field of strategy most of the time holding your hand and so we felt like just putting him there might have a big difference in that day and uh plus our offensive line is going to come together and you know barefoot we played three pretty good football teams and lost three games by 15 points you know the last two about a combined five but you know what they played too so you got to do you got to make plays we haven't really made a lot of plays and we finally made some votes right well you certainly did with visiting with coach t-mask if a ball coach for the bobcats of theadore uh coach you mentioned jayj bush ran 21 times over uh 230 yards had a couple touchdowns yeah a big part of that offense there's no doubt but talk a little bit about your defense as well defense played very very strong against the tigers on thursday night well random arses i think coordinator does an outstanding job and he's having to shuffle some things around you know taking jayj away from the ms hurt him a little bit but you know kids like brian board and and and they've watched and some of the kids really have decided to take ownership over there it would place me on kids over there especially with defense in line we don't really have the the dominant defense in line that we've had in years past but we've got some good players there so i think they're starting to figure it out you know it's a shame it takes 40 weeks to figure it out but the past two football and it is one of the reasons you know we've dug ourselves a little bit of a hole so we don't have a lot of room for error so we're starting to figure it out and we know that we still might be the first taking things back if we talk about it but hey coach i know you figured it out and the way that i know that is because you can't talk you've lost your voice and i know i know you've been yelling at somebody to to get it figured out well i've only yelled at one person most of the time that's that food i look at the mirror every morning but uh you know i i tell everybody that it's uh you know what i had a little issue last morning and came back kind of the same song but i worked on my other voice my very white voice and so uh sometimes it sounds pretty good sometimes it doesn't matter there you go there you go hey little man that's that would be that would be neat for you though i was a very white right there but i don't think you would have stopped singing that brother you've got it going on there's two guys you don't compete with the PSR don't compete with very good for cleaning you don't compete with Rick Cleveland eighties those are the two things i can't believe you can't win it that would i can promise you revisit with coach steve mask at theadore coach all right let's turn real quick uh next week you've got or this upcoming week you've got uh st. Paul's return back there you want three state champions the uh championships there twenty fourteen fifteen and twenty how big how big was my hold up now it was gonna be right they're not being bragging we want four let's don't you don't want there you go i did leave it all right did uh not bad please you know what that's called i buried that's called that's all living in the past is what that's called that's right that's right i'm with you i'm with this thing oh my good this everybody's good right but that's gonna be a big night for you and and talk a little bit about that well i you know last year was the first time back and i i mean a lot of i said it wasn't very emotional because it was and uh very tense in my own mind part of more so than anybody else's but you know it's always fun to you know go back there i think another way to get there that shouldn't be a problem and uh we're excited about going back to places a good thing just for you know and no time of course to the region but uh we'll see a lot of friends we'll say something really don't like me a lot of both topics still do but uh we'll look forward to we'll look forward to seeing those folks and look forward to getting a good thing or team over to play a good same policy yeah cuz we're looking forward to that game you know and i know sometimes it's hard to go going back to where you've coached i've done it uh before and uh you know but i tell people all the time and i know you you agree with this you know there's people there you know that you've made friends with you know i've obviously over the years that you were at St. Paul's and and schools where i've gone back to play and and i coached at that school i had a lot of friends so i kind of live by this saying you know jobs come and go but relationships last forever so those relationships with those St. Paul's you know people that you have there uh will always be there and always last so like i said no matter where you go in your job uh you still have i've got friends and art more right now that i still talk to on the phone and they text me and uh we we try to get together every chance for you i've got friends that hold full and uh you know those relationships to me that's what it's all about the game is great but uh that's just me relationships will last forever well that's very well said and like i said we've got lifelong friends that we've made in the 14 years we were there and say them on a regular basis today with them socially and uh uh you know call a lot of people play a lot of golf a lot of people there's we still living and you know and they'll just live a lot so yeah those those relationships are still there and i don't know that and uh i know they know like oh they've been have a guard and very thankful for what we did there but also very thankful what we've got to feed or people being great and we'll have to be there and you know we're saying uh we're getting down to the end of the tunnel a bit you know you're sitting alive you know how far away the light is but you start to take a little breath and look back and enjoy the things that you've done and what you don't do in the future and so that's where you are right now i don't know i have no in-wheel towards anybody right now nobody well coach is always fun to visit with you congratulations on the win again i know you get set for for st. Paul's and uh we'll be rooting you on and look forward to having you back on uh real soon uh let me say well they're broke out that sp mark laughter his family and our prayers have been time yeah it's true but both two two great people that are great ambassadors for two sports but great ambassadors for all of us is our friend just so let's keep both those families in our prayers no that's very good thank you coach we appreciate that and again good luck on friday night we uh look forward to talking with you real soon all right thank you i have a great back all right and i i'm gonna come over to one of your practices coach but you got to sing a very white song for me well you better come over there you got it i am i'm gonna see you brother there you go there you go coach steve mask the uh head football coach for the bobcats at theodor all right we'll take a quick time out and when we come back we'll talk with coach cody flonor the head football coach for jacks they get a win last night over bakers excuse me that was on thursday night 20 to 13 the final that we talked with him right after this welcome back to the tomsen tractor prep sports report brought to you by alpha insurance now back to your host randy bergen today well we are rolling through this second hour glad to have you right here on board with us of the tomsen tractor prep sports report i am randy berg and coach rick cleveland coach mark laster uh they are on assignment so we've got coach berry gypson in here of course berry retired high school coach college coach and berry i'm i'm glad that you're in here with us today my man so glad to be here man my time of year dead football baby ain't no doubt i love it ain't no doubt let's continue talking football we do that with a head football coach for the aggies of jackson coach cody florinor coach uh first off congratulations on the win thursday night i mean you've got it's almost like a david versus goliath if you will as jack's nafore school and bakers seven a school talk a little bit about that preparation because i know a lot of times folks uh players can look at that and say hey m- uh oh do we still have coach on he's there okay coach there you are there okay there you are sometimes i have to think players can look at and say hey we may not have a chance uh talk about the mentality of the team getting prepared for this game uh talk about going into bakers right yeah yeah yeah okay so uh you know the the reason we picked up this game first of all was called uh both of us were trying to find a game we both had region uh excuse me week three off uh just kind of how it fell on our schedule both but we had open region dates that week and so at the time coach normal called me uh we had a good relationship we played my first year here and so anyway we was like yeah we'll play uh he knew what kind of talent we had and i knew that they're they're good coming off one of their best seasons and uh anyway we we we had the game going and uh we kind of knew what we were up against uh but but that's what we wanted our whole first part of our season this year has been uh against some big time opponents and uh it's been a tough stretch and uh you know our guys have happened pretty well we're three and one we lost our first game to sairland you know by touchdown so um you know what's look at what they're doing now hey uh i feel you know pretty feel a little bit better about it you know i thought we should have played better in that game but uh you know they're they're rolling through their schedule right now uh just looking at scores over the last few weeks so uh kudos to them but uh baker a big time opponent they're playing really good football i taught what coast johnson for a while and uh just tell them man they're they're doing such a great job down there uh it matter fact our first score was off a turnover uh picked six and it was their first turnover on the season in their fourth game um you know i i there he's doing a good job down there yeah there's absolutely absolute no question about that talk a little bit about your quarterback and land and duck words certainly you've got some comfortability having him back there in the cubie spa but he had a pretty good game as well eight of nineteen for a little less than eighty yards he runs the ball thirteen times for sixty one yards uh this this has to feel good having him back clear quarterback yeah and and look we we've got weapons and that's one of the things that you know i i want to run a good program here and that's one of the things we we hold our hats on trying to hold the guy so high standard but you to to have great success you you got to have great talent it kind of goes hand-to-hand so i'm running a good program i've been blessed with great talent and land is part of that piece and uh you know we have a complementary type offense because uh all american tailback ej he rushed for 250 yards and a touchdown but land end is the piece because it's going to touch his hands every time and he's the most experienced guy on our offense and while he was pretty pedestrian uh you know throwing the ball the other night he made some runs that uh just he finished some runs and just good decision and he's he's just a threat every time to throw a big ball to take it through the house uh he was on our four by one uh state champion uh sprint team and and he's that type of guy so uh elite level athlete and um you know he got an end zone the other night he just he ran over a guy getting an end zone and it was just kind of you know a statement there so uh that type of guy that type of talent uh we we like putting it in hand every play and you know we're gonna we're gonna go as he goes so uh just really really excited about you know just coaching him in his third year start for us so he started as a freshman of sophomore now in his junior year we're starting to see pieces of his game starting to really come together well that's awesome we'll visit with coach florida right here the hit football coach for the Aggies of Jackson coach Gibson yeah coach uh wanted to ask you know i was a wide receiver at my career uh in college and in a fail so i understand how a wide receiver can break a game open you know at any time uh right talk to us a little bit about your white outs about your receiving core and how they've done so far or have they lived up to the expectations and uh you know just you know tell us share with us a little bit uh about your wide receivers yeah so it goes all the way back in the last season and then going through spring training and uh big big thing now that we didn't have when i come through high school it's our seven on seven season and so we we threw seven on seven this summer really got big in the month of June where we went to several different places and they were there were two quarterbacks and the receiving corps that really stood out one was landing duckworth other was gunner rivers which is also in our region but those were two the top guys that were there all season we ran into them a couple times just running that seven on seven circuit and you people will say seven on seven not real football but you can see talent and so we got a kind of an inexperienced group i coach defensive backs and we kind of we we got a good group their kind of inexperienced minus are one uh stood juicy gordon uh which was committed to bowman now changed and flipped going to UCF but uh the other guys are young and i told our guys i was like listen we're going against the top nine quarterback with probably the four best offensive receivers as a group uh that you'll see all year and uh and that even goes back to stairland where they got uh you know that their guys city gill and uh dillin alpha and and that was a good group but as far as four guys all together in a unit with landing back there quarterback and uh we got red key on Chapman six four on the left side that uh committed UCF junior pains in the slot uh i think he's going to commit the jackson state uh marin king got offers to some alabama state and uh Tuskegee and then on the right the guy that's been playing a lot for us is juicy gordon which uh is the defensive back but he's playing offense a lot for us now and he's just a playmaker we just want to get the ball in his hands so uh as far as him guys go and then we throw in uh a guy that's coming along with us i say glad and we got some young guys coming through but you you start putting all these guys together and then then you start getting to uh hey how can i get the ball in this guy's hands and so it becomes a good problem to have because you got an all american tailback too and then it starts becoming hey how can i get touches for everybody because all these receivers are good and and they complement each other so red six four he'll take the top off uh again four by one state track team he was he was the third leg on it and our tailback was the was the was the anchor and our quarterback's the first leg and so um he can take the top off and then all our guys got speed but a guy like junior pain he's that guy in the slot that that you can't cover that on a one-on-one batch up he always seems to get open a west welker type guy and uh and then juicy gordon which you know cover a whole field and catch anything you throw as well so just uh you know good problems to have as far as getting touches uh and so just trying to keep everybody happy but that's where uh landed all the night i think he he threw the five different receivers and i had completions with them guys so uh and then land is a threat to take off so you know just really explosive offense i tell people a lot that you know you want to come watch us because we play a high high powered offensive style of play and it's fun to watch hey coach let me throw another topic at you uh before uh we have to let you go as a retired football coach i'm glad i don't have to deal with unfortunately you do with with talents like you have obviously college recruits a lot of college coaches come to Jackson on campus uh you know to see these kids and with this NIL stuff you know a lot a lot of these kids are looking at colleges about where i can go to make the most money talk to us about how do you handle that with those kids and trying to instruct them and guide them in the right direction when it comes to this NIL stuff because i used to tell them you know my if i was lucky enough to have a prospect make sure you go to a college where you're going to enjoy being there for four years you know the social life that you know the the campus uh and not just the football part of it so if you would share whether this uh this NIL thing is a monster and uh how do you how do you guide your players through this it is a monster it's a it's a booger is what i would say uh all right so one of the things that uh so land has been good from early on and and part of being a national recruit like landin or juicy is that uh they've had they got good families and good parents that take them to some of these national camps and so in order to be a national recruit especially early like landin was uh he he went to some places and he he ran the circuit for a little while and and you do that to to get that national notoriety and right now he's the number one dual threat quarterback in his class and his mom tip me and uh and a guy that's uh been with him the whole time for rest these guys we we got good relationships with them but we just uh the quarterback position is so much different because we got a guy like Walter Taylor now that style with Vanderbilt now he's at uh Colorado he was our quarterback a few years ago but what you said hey go somewhere you'll like for four years that's not the case anymore uh guy the transfer on a regular basis and it's how you go where i can play but uh you know as far as the NIL stuff goes that uh you know it's something that we're keeping our own and just recruiting in general and and that's where we kind of cut up with uh miss Tiffany landin's mom and and you know we got several guys in this position but she's one that we've talked so much with because he's been stopped for us so long but it hey i don't know clearly what the rules are and i don't think nobody does and and we talk well and it's one of the things where we talk with we know what our state rules are and that's their snow NIL and it's not that the guys can't make money but landin can't go shoot a commercial with uh say and hey on the quarterback of the jack's naggy's they even go flip a burger and make some money um so uh we're just kind of working to that matter of fact our our retired circuit court judge up here is games with quarky dell and me and him i've been on the phone just talking about this conversation because one of the things that we don't want to do at the state is lose our top talent so uh it's very apparent in basketball where the top three basketball players in our state and over the last two years have lived and it's pretty alarming in it you know i don't know if you know this about our guys but they're all juniors like our top recruits are all juniors in our tailpacks are thoughtful and you know there's question about whether these guys are going to be here next year or if something is going off here yep you know funny to leave though you know it's coaching everything and we're just working through it now i got to tell you that that's a topic right there that we can spend days on yeah okay there's no doubt hey thanks for taking time to be with us coach congratulations on the win over boker to baker 2013 congrats and good luck against mobile christian as you get back into region play there you go welcome you back to the tumps and tractor prep sports report it is our camp grace segment and filling in today pastor chad stapard he's with coastal church of daphne and the chaplain for bayside and daphne football teams coach thank you for taking time to be with us and we're looking forward to you camp grace today truly my pleasure thank y'all for having me and i know we're all coaches here and i actually coach college baseball for a while and been coaching for right at about 30 years and recently we've been in a series about work and it's called made for monday's and one of the things i couldn't help but laugh about i know us as coaches and players we all remember especially during football season good lord that monday practice that was hard and tuesday was hard and you know um we live for them friday nightlife but boy monday and tuesday it was just one of those things it's very hard to have great energy and you can't let you know that according to uh recent statistics in a 2022 gallop poll if carrying over into our work because only one in four employees in america enjoy their jobs and they feel engaged at work and what's so cool is that jesus knew that this was going to happen because it's human nature we get bored easy and frustrated with the day-to-day grind and you know football sometimes it's the same old drills and we're trying to create that muscle memory and stuff like that and so it's really really hard to be able to you know uh to to have the same type of enthusiasm and i'm so thankful that jesus in loop chapter 16 he began to train his employees his disciples how to think like owners instead of employees he showed them owners get to create the culture that they want to see because the right type of culture corrects wrong behaviors and it powers the right people toward the right result so he said this immersed him he said whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much and whoever's dishonest with very little will also be dishonorable much jesus is showing us here how different the thinking and actions are from an employee uh that it is for my owner because employees asked what's in it for many owners asked what's best for the team i got uh told a long time ago uh older man told me chad a child always talks about their rights but adult talks about their responsibilities and jesus is saying here in verse 10 what we care about we can be trusted with it so if you want to be in charge of a lot of stuff you got to create you got to care about a lot of stuff at work you can be trusted with a lot you only care about little stuff you're only going to be responsible for little things when we take ownership of more things god tells us that he'll give us more responsibility the next uh verse it says so if you've not been trustworthy and handling worldly wealth who's going to trust you with true riches jesus is showing these guys owners see themselves as investors not just spenders if we're supposed to be givers not just takers where we ask is this the best use of the company's time and money and because there's other ways to steal than just taking money and falsifying expense reports and look how he wraps us up in verse 12 he says if you've not been trustworthy with someone else's property who's going to give you property of your own he's telling us here owners think we first not me first and so jesus tells him guys until you learn how to be on the team you're never going to be effective in leading one you treat the team the way that you would want to be treated you'd be committed to everybody's success because before god bless us have something of our own he expects us to be great teammates he expects us to be everyone else's cheerleader and what they see that their jobs are nothing more than to make the team and make sure the team wins that's what our owner does and how we treat the little things that nobody else sees or cares about builds our credibility where he challenges always keep your word never make excuses Benjamin Franklin once wrote a man who's good at making excuses and seldom good at anything else a person who never makes excuses they show reliability to be known as a finisher and knowing that no person that anybody has to stay constantly stay on another word for success is the word consistency am i a person of my word do i go above and beyond am i a person that can be dependent upon no matter what i once i was once at ESPN one time and i heard uh Dallas cowboy uh tied in Jason Witten tell a story that that really impressed me he told everybody that in his rookie year the first screamer he was ever in the first pass he ever caught a linebacker caught him right under the chin with a just a vicious blow and it broke his jaw in three places and his mouth would have wired shut for three weeks and while he was in the training room head coach Bill Parcels came in and he put his hand on his shoulder and it was the very first time they ever spoke to him and he said to zoom something that was just incredibly important he said son the only two things that ever matter in this league is toughness and dependability and coach Parcels walked away Witten got off the training table returned to practice and he never missed the game for 14 seasons he played in the pro bowl 11 times and it's considered one of the best tight ends to ever play surely because of his toughness and his dependability and then finally one of the things that that Jesus is pointing out here is - we need to be known for people that we're loyal we don't make negative or passive aggressive comments about our coach or our boss at work or our co-workers and all that's on social media or even even just comments you know jobs are doing social media searches for the hard people I tell the kids I get changed and be a chaplain over coaches are doing the same thing before offering scholarships and even acceptance to their schools so don't be a co-conspirited or rebellion even if you share somebody's frustration you ain't got to make a comment if somebody asked you to do something illegal a moral or unethical don't you do it don't you dare do it be known that somebody was some standards sometimes people are like hey man I'm just being loyal to somebody remember something the Nazi leaders considered themselves just being loyal to Germany when they killed all those innocent people they were later on hung for murder not loyalty so God expects us to have high standards we don't gossip about our boss or gossip about the coach as we talk about people just like they're standing behind our shoulder because everything's being recorded right now and God has always had the record button on it's good to have a healthy paranoia and where you and I can show loyalty and deflaze praise onto our coaches and onto our players and learn how to protect them and because somebody you know from time to time they they they'll just sit back there and I'd say so and so did this to me the best response to say it I'm sorry I've never seen that side of them Jesus and challenges us to be people of integrity and when we start doing these things some people may think that you're putting on a show but that argument ends when it's consistent because character's doing the right thing even though the right thing has it been done to you so the greatest influence we have is trust once that trust is gone so it was our employees learn to love you work learn that you're made for monday and God will use your life thanks for the opportunity to share today thank you co-op that's pastor Chad Stafford of the coastal church in daphne he brought our camp grace segment thank you so much all right that's going to wrap up this edition of the Thompson tractor prep sports report
