And welcome in to fired up network special edition of time out. I wanted to take a look at the New York football teams got a lot of family in New York. I'm going to be heading up there for Christmas and kind of keep my eye on the jets especially and the Giants and wow it's rough joined by Matt O'Leary the host of the Jets jets pod and now Big Apple Blitz as well you see the New York J ETS jets jets jets helmet behind them there Matt and thanks for joining us and how are you feeling about the beginning of the season is a rough week for the Big Apple. Yeah thank you so much for having me and as you said not the week that New York sports fans were we're hoping for Giants didn't really give much of an effort jets I thought they'd be much more competitive than they were in that game so hanging in there but you know hopefully turn it around in week two yeah I mean I I felt pretty good about the jets especially without McCaffery playing and I guess to be realistic you have to give a little bit of time for Aaron Rodgers because the Achilles is the one leg injury that they really haven't gotten the surgery dial they're not it was astonishing that he was out there throwing the ball and practicing as soon as he did and talking about coming back and playing just seemed utterly insane didn't end up doing it but really he kind of played with the similar I guess you'd say ring rust to what Kirk Cousin showed with basically the same injury yeah that's right obviously you know working his way back from the Achilles and his in his first game they didn't have him throw a ton only 21 passes a lot of that had to do with the defense not being able to get off the field the time of possession was way skewed to the 49ers side so jets not really all that active in the passing attack they struggled to get the ground game going but there were a couple throws that you know reminded you of Aaron Rodgers of old so you know hopefully some shines signs of life in there and something they could build off of going into week two at least on the offensive side. yeah I mean you definitely saw the old Aaron Rodgers on the free play touchdown which he does probably better than anyone but yeah my I guess my main question is because I also followed Nathaniel Hackett for a while because his dad Paul Hackett has a long history of being a shaky offensive coordinator here with the Kansas City Chiefs and we saw Nathaniel as the head coach of the Denver Broncos and another guy from New York that I'll play in in New York now that I'll ask you about to unlock his dad told me quote unquote that was the worst head coach I've ever seen I can't believe he still has a job in the NFL what's the feeling about Nathaniel Hackett and then really because you imagine it the defense couldn't get off the field that's slaw's strength and it was against the team that you should know better than anyone that's almost more alarming than the offense being shaky week one because you can kind of excuse that yeah absolutely the the Hackett situation is one that Jeff fans don't love with Nathaniel Hackett and they know Paul Hackett too after Kansas City came to the Jets and was there OC from 2001 through 2004 so the double win I guess with the Hackett's like like John or like Sean exactly so unfortunately didn't love the play calling in week one I do think that Rogers is going to have a lot of control at the line of scrimmage so there's some optimism of you know the the offense turning it around but as you mentioned the defense was you know really this team's calling card of the last two years they really struggled against the run they lost some key run defenders in free agency this past year and by a trade it traded John Franklin Myers to Denver Quentin Quentin Jefferson goes to Cleveland Browns and Al Woods who they had last year is still recovering from an Achilles injury so they're a little beat up leaky photo who they brought in from Arizona is kind of supposed to take over that role as the interior defender in the run game to smother the run but he's on IR right now so it's something that they're going to have to fix and fix quickly the San Francisco is still you know one of the best offenses and Kyle Shanahan has a great run scheme so I'm not dismissing it as not an issue it definitely was a problem but there's also you know part of it has to do with the 49ers being one of the best teams as well as Kyle Shanahan and his run scheme that he gets gone sure oh you can definitely you can definitely give reasons now week two they're traveling to take on the Tennessee Titans very different Titans team than previous they have another legacy in charge there as Scott Callahan your new head coach Bill Callahan son and they're doing it without Derek Henry now how do you feel about this game the Jets going in to take on the Titans I mean is it almost a must win already yeah I think I would call it a must win it's it's a short week playing on Monday going into play on Sunday and then they play again on Thursday for their home opener against New England so it's a lot of football right in a row but they absolutely need to get this one on the road they're like three and a half four point favorites in this one depending on where it looks so it's it's really up up to them to just take care of business here I do Tennessee has a solid defense I thought they played well against Chicago it was unfortunately for Tennessee the quarterback a couple turnovers really killed them but for the Jets I think it's potentially a bounce back spot if they're able to get will Levis to make some mistakes he has had the tendency to turn the ball over so far in his young career so my expectation would be for the defense to kind of look like the unit we've seen the last couple of years and offensively I think you know with with another week of practice and kind of just getting everyone in with in rhythm we should we should see an improved product there as well yeah I think the defense should be able to match up well with well Levis because I mean they're disappointed in him already and then to be fair being a quarterback in the NFL is hard there's a reason why Dak Prescott gets resigned because nobody wants to be the team that walks from a good starting quarterback and go to the draft and then they swing and miss because you're burying your team for four years exactly it's so easy to say oh well let's look for the upgrade and someone like Dak Prescott who is a very good quarterback he maybe may have some question marks when it comes to postseason time but I can get real scary out there if you swing and miss at the quarterback position believe me so sometimes you don't you don't know what you have to let's go well I'm speaking about swinging and missing on the quarterback situation let's take a look at the other team that plays at MetLife Stadium the Giants wearing anniversary throwback uniforms and unfortunately Daniel Jones looked as bad as he did previously good morning football the NFL network was already calling for Drew Bach to come in and play what's the feeling in New York because they resigned Daniel Jones it was the hey he had a pretty good year he ran the ball a lot well let's go let's keep them looking good for Brian Dave all no it's definitely not you said it I think a lot of Giants fans that I've spoken to at least are just there over it it's a sixth season now there was some hope that with the improved offensive line they draft Malik neighbors that finally all the pieces are going to be in place but unfortunately I just don't think there's any salvaging this I know that injuries have played a factor to but really that 2022 season was kind of the outlier unfortunately everything else is kind of it seems to be reverted back to pre 2022 when turnovers were an issue and he was just taking sacks I know the offensive line is still a question mark but sometimes quarterbacks can run into their own pressure and Daniel Jones does that a lot and we saw it in week one against Minnesota I think that was a game Giants fans thought would be would be a lot closer than what it was and it got ugly very quickly and I wouldn't be surprised if sooner rather than later they do have to make a change at the quarterback position yeah I mean even the mobility wasn't there 15 yards on the ground 85 sacks is even healthy yeah I mean I think it's worth worth asking he hadn't had a ton of reps in training camp it took him a little bit to get really like fully ramped up so I think you can make a case that he might not still be be healthy but that's definitely part of the equation with him you know it's very rare that he's played a full season he always gets banged up and you know if the Giants want to get out of this contract which they haven't out after this year they better make sure that he's healthy so they can get out of it so I will be surprised if we see you know like a Russell Wilson like situation we saw a year ago with Denver where they were sitting him at the end of the year because they didn't want him to get hurt so they can get out of the contract are you ready to see Drew Lock get a shot at quarterback he did start previously for the Broncos and was you know okay can gun the ball play great at Missouri this is a long time ago now but he also throws a good share of interception so I don't know if it's necessarily much of an upgrade yeah that's really the question is if it's if it's actually an upgrade same draft class as well as the Daniel Jones class you know I they don't they might not have a choice unfortunately you know that's who they have is QB to I know a lot of giant fans still really like Tommy DeVito the the cult hero from last year got hot won some games at the end of the year so I think they'd be comfortable going to either Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito honestly but it seems like locks ahead of DeVito on the pecking order right now so I think he'd be next in line is Tommy DeVito still the folk hero when I was in New York last year visiting my daughter and son-in-law for the holidays it was during the middle of DeVito mania he was on his winning streak and that's all anybody was talking about are the fans still clamoring for DeVito oh fans fans still love him but yeah the New Jersey Italian kid he's it goes over really well in this area so yes someone to still get that chance they point to you know that run of last year for those you know a couple of games but you know I it's I think for the Giants they they don't view him in the same light as the fans and I would just be surprised if he did get that chance I if they make a quarterback change I think it would end up being for Drew Lock at this point well as we're winding down here on the fired-up network you can see us on sports.tv on carbon TV and on true TV plus got Matt O'Leary here the just jets pod and Big Apple Blitz just want to leave the New York football fans with a little a little hope for gain now a bright side because the Big Apple can get kind of negative New York media could be pretty hard if you're a Jets fan things go right if yeah things go right if the Jets figure out the the run defense and Aaron Rodgers continues to look like the Aaron Rodgers of old I think if they get back to that formula they would be in a good spot last two years they won seven games each the last two years with you know frankly the probably the worst quarterback room in the NFL it's just it was a tough go with Zach Wilson Trevor Simi and Tim Boyle whoever was starting games for them so if you even get average to slightly above average quarterback play I think the Jets will definitely be in playoff contention and things are going well for the Giants if if they're competing for the number one pick to get the next quarterback okay that sounds really harsh after one game I know but I just really don't see a future there I think they that's really the next the next thing you know on the positive for things to look for this year Malik neighbors I think is going to be a star at this level so I know he got banged up in practice a little bit I don't think it's enough to worry about him missing this game coming up against Washington but you're watching the young talent but unfortunately this isn't a year where the Giants I think are going to be competing for a playoff spot so instead looking forward to the draft and just watching the young guys develop anyone in particular your targeting are you looking Carson back I think he's my favorite quarterback in this draft class right now but it's still so early I feel like it changes as the year goes on and we get late risers like Jayden Daniels a year ago at this time a year ago definitely wasn't in that mix but you know he rises up ends up getting taken second overall so we'll see how how the draft process ends up playing out but as of now I think Beck is probably my number one quarterback and Matt where can viewers of fired up network find you and I know you can get involved on the Jets Jets pod you can call up and leave a question and you go through some of the questions during the show just how do they find you how do they reach it yeah absolutely so you can follow on social media and on YouTube at Matt O'Leary and why talking all things Jets New York sports over there we like to keep it light have some fun as where we're talking sports here yeah very entertaining listen Matt thanks a lot for joining us well I'm hoping the best for for my Jets last year when they played the Chiefs I was I was in Las Vegas and found out man I hate betting against the Jets but you know what I'm gonna bet on the Chiefs to cover because going up against Zach Wilson the Chiefs have to get this cover and Zach Wilson played the game of his life they still laws but the Jets covered so that was that was kind of a win I guess I'm glad I didn't like too much money on him yeah that that's how they get you sometimes it just works out that way and like you said that was probably his best game or second best game of the season so just unfortunate against you like thanks for joining us here the fired up network stay tuned for more as we move into time out breaking down the NFL for this weekend we'll see you later on, fire it up network. Thanks. [BLANK_AUDIO]
