Hey, hello, I am Jeff, and welcome to History and Factors About Today, today's September the 17th. Yeah, I know, but that is the only song we could find anywhere that mentions apple dumplings. Yeah, today's national apple dumpling day. A tasty little dessert. They go back to the 1740s. They were created in the New England States in the northeast part of the United States. Now, they're actually pretty easy to make. You just peel and pour some apples, sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar, wrap them in little pastries and bake them. It's like eating a bunch of little apple pies. Good time of year to enjoy some apple dumplings. Today is also International Country Music Day. Yeah, I know country music is popular worldwide. It is global and international. It really wasn't until the 1990s. That's when Garth Brooks and Shania Twain and that whole crowd, they got the worldwide attention to it. It gets more popular every year. Now, as you've heard me talk about, we have an internet radio station called Country Underground Radio. We play independent and up-and-coming country radio, our country's artists. Now, we don't mention listeners, though. We have listeners from all over the world every month. We have over 80 countries that listen to us. Now, most popular in Europe and South America, yeah, we're really big in Brazil and don't know why, but for some reasons, we're like the number one internet country radio station over in Denmark. But we have listeners all over Africa, Russia, China, Japan, Australia. Yeah, pretty much all over the world. So, you want to celebrate International Country Music Day? We're a good place. We also play international artists, though, too. It's mostly American artists, but we, too, play some. We actually play quite a few country artists from Canada. I said I miss you, but that meant nothing. That was just the whiskey token. I said I want you back. Why would I meet that? You're only the best I've ever had. We haven't played some from England. ♪ And you don't even know my name ♪ ♪ It's okay ♪ ♪ 'Cause I'm not looking for love ♪ ♪ And I'm frightened now ♪ ♪ Just a little bit of fun ♪ ♪ Don't marry us now ♪ Play quite a few country artists from Australia. ♪ Now I'm dancing on air ♪ ♪ I do crazy things ♪ ♪ And I don't get the care ♪ ♪ I'm happy and finally I'm runnin' free ♪ ♪ They keep reachin' on me ♪ We haven't played a guy from Ireland. ♪ And I know that men like me ♪ ♪ Are frowned upon today ♪ ♪ Might be a bit too nice ♪ ♪ And you're afraid that I might stay ♪ All right, let's see what's happening on Entertainment on September the 17th. The Army was interested in buying some of their airplanes. Now it was Orville's job to show the Army how safe and practical their plans would be. So he took a 26-year-old Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge up there with him. They demonstrated it on a fight above the crowd. Over 2,000 people had gathered at their playgrounds. They watched in tears and they flew over him and did all kinds of stuff. Then the propeller broke off. Yeah, they're about 150 feet high and went hitting those first into the ground. Orville and Thomas, they were both thrown from the airplane. Thomas hit his head and fractured a skull and died. He has the honor of being the first person ever killed an airplane crash. I guess it's kind of an honor. Now the Army, they did an autopsy on him. And it turned out that he had not hidden his head. He would have lived. Yeah, none of his other injuries were life-threatening. So the Army did go ahead and buy some of those airplanes. They just made other pilots wear helmets. Remember I told you a night too long ago about how Germany invaded Poland in 1939 from the west and that's what started the whole World War II? Well today, just a couple days later, the Soviet Union attacked Poland from the east. Now they weren't trying to help Poland out. You know, you think they might try and stop Germany? No, the Soviets, they wanted Eastern Poland and they didn't want Germany to get their first. 1967, both the doors and the who made their first appearances on American TV.
