Boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop. Hi, horn, let's go. Some programming notes for this whip around. Due to some scheduling wires getting crossed, there is no big 12 game of the week. I will talk just quickly about some stuff that seems to be surrounding that Utah Oklahoma State game here in a second. And then also, I'm flying out a Thursday early afternoon up to Utah. So I will not be having any sort of recap of Joe Clanderman or Connor Riley's press availability. That will be on YouTube. Be sure you go and check that out. Stay stay online, go PowerCat and K-State Sports. Typically have that out on YouTube, so be sure to check that out, get your own takeaways. Tweeting your takeaways, it should be fun. I do have a little bit of a few takeaways from Kalani Satake's press availability, so I'll get to that before we get to the primers. Before we get to it again, we know how big of a, how big a game the Utah Oklahoma State game. That's really going to set the tone for the Arlington race and the line. Again, we only do pick 'em. We don't really worry too much about the betting lines, but the betting line moved close to six points on Wednesday over the course of a few hours. Now, I haven't heard anything anywhere near official, but the assumption is this is a signal that Cam Rising will not be playing down in Stillwater, which obviously would swing a lot a lot of the money towards Oklahoma State. And it really would be a pretty big upset. I think if Oklahoma State were to drop this game at home versus Utah without Cam Rising, who is pedestrian, quite frankly, without him. So that will be something to monitor. I would imagine, so I'm recording this Thursday morning, pretty early in the morning. I'd imagine sometime on Thursday or on Friday or hell, it might go all the way up until the game on Saturday, but I am imagining all the tea leaves, all the smoke is pointed towards Cam Rising, possibly not playing in that game. So that will be something that shapes the Arlington race, something that also will shape the Arlington race. We talked a little bit about it on Wednesday, but it's a loser to leave town type of game between KU and West Virginia, two fan bases that thought they would be in the Arlington race. Look, we saw Iowa State last year go one and two in the non-conference, and they did insert themselves into the race for Arlington. So whoever comes away victorious in that game probably could be sitting there and saying, "Hey, we can get hot, we're one and no in conference play, and it's off to the races for them as well." So those are two massive games that I'll be keeping an eye on Saturday before heading towards LaVara Edwards Stadium up at BYU. Before we get into a little bit of Kalani Satake takeaways from his press conference, we'll give a shout to our sponsor, Charlie Hustle. If you listen early enough today, you still have a chance to enter into our giveaway for two Charlie Hustle shirts and two tickets to the K-State Oklahoma State game next week. Head over to our Twitter account, see the pin tweet get entered. Charlie Hustle, vintage made fresh. They are truly the best there is. All right, Kalani Satake opened up. He had a lot of praise for K-State, talked about the history of Bill Snyder and what he did at K-State, and then he touched on something that Chris Klim and also talked about on his Wednesday coaches show. They connected in Hawaii at the Nike coaches summit this past offseason. There seems to be a very real friendship between Kalani Satake and Chris Klim, and so that was fun to hear about. And he also gave some shout outs to Matt Wells and Tui, two guys who I think he's crossed paths with. It seems like Kalani Satake has a lot of respect for this coaching staff. And then I'll just flip ahead a little bit, but there also is a ton of praise for Avery Johnson, talking about how he's a dynamic runner. He's a complete player, very impressed with him on film. It goes back to what Chef said during the Thursday conversations episode. He watched Kalani Satake's press availability. He watched all the player stuff. He listened to radio media availability. He said it's all Avery. No talk about DJ, no talk about Dylan Edwards. So if that's really where their focus is, which I think is what we saw from UT Martin, and what we saw a lot of from Tulane as well, I think that it is going to open things up for both Dylan Edwards and DJ getting sad a big game. So that's gonna be something I'm gonna be looking for. Man, super late at night on Saturday, I still don't love that. The first couple of questions were actually, I don't think they were hostile, but they were kind of chopping at Kalani Satake a little bit, and he got a little cagey with it as well. You know, first he was asked about, you know, their lack of success on third down. He's like, well, look at our fourth down success, and we'll figure it out. And it was a little cagey, and then asked about what's different about this three and oh, start versus last year, three and oh, start. He's like, well, look, if you don't think we've improved, that's on you. So again, that dynamic between Kalani Satake and the BYU media is not something I anticipated seeing. But it was interesting. Again, I watch a lot of big 12 press conferences. Usually I watch whoever K-Sates playing. Obviously, I watch Chris Commons every week, and then I do watch a lot of Gundy, Leipold, and Matt Campbell being, you know, kind of the regional big 12 teams. I haven't seen a dynamic like that between media and coaches quite often, so I thought that was entertaining. Talked about how the, it's a deep safety room for BYU. I know they've had a few injuries at safety, said that they should all be ready to go. It was a little bit more vague when he was talking about the running back, said they're all still being evaluated. So the only other thing I took away was, he was asked about all the close games in the big 12. He said, hey, you have to be consistent. You have to execute your situational football plans. You can't get too caught up in thinking about, hey, this could be a close game. You just have to work the situations as they present themselves. So I thought it was an interesting, it was an entertaining watch, if you have 12, 15 minutes, you can catch the whole thing. It's on YouTube with the BYU Sports YouTube page. So it was an interesting dynamic. Before we get to the primers, we'll give a shout out to Manhattan Brewing Company, the best brewery in the state of Kansas. Look, if you're not going up to Utah and you're watching the game either in Manhattan or in Wichita, be sure to check out the brewery or the lounge to watch a game. It's going to be a late one. You need some of the best beer in the state of Kansas to get you through it. (upbeat music) - Hello, hello, hello to all of the wonderful boneheads of the world. I'm Ace Edwards, and I'm here for your BYU preview on the whip around show for Bosco's boys. So thank you again for Scott Wildcat for having me onto the show. And let's just go ahead and dive straight into a little bit about the BYU Cougars of this year. If you're looking for notable wins for this Cougars team, the most notable of them would probably up be up against SMU, which was an 18 to 15 victory in admittedly one of the worst games that I had ever seen. And they proceeded to follow it up by playing a better in a different game, but still one of the worst games I've ever seen up against Wyoming 34 to 14. And of course, to open the season, they had their FCS matchup up against the Southern Illinois Salukis. This game is obviously a home matchup for BYU and an environment that is going to be unfamiliar for K State, which is going to be a bit of a theme for a lot of teams going into this upcoming season with how realignment has been sort of crazy, all these last couple of years. And of course, you're going to have to be getting a lot of afternoon to evening caffeine in, because if you're listening in God's time zone, you will be watching this game starting at 9.30. Yes, I'm not exactly happy about it either. But in terms of specifics for what BYU does, they're a pretty traditional team in terms of offensive and defensive philosophies. They do run a lot of under center stuff, so they're not a truly spread team, but I think the best way to describe them on both sides of the ball would probably be multiple. They can do a lot of different things and throw a lot of different looks at you, and well, perhaps that speaks to a little bit of a problem that we'll talk about later. But now we can get in a little bit in the specific players to watch. Their quarterback is led by a man named Retslaff, Jake Retslaff to be specific, and he is coming in as a transfer. He's thrown for 841 yards, a 60.6 completion percentage, seven touchdowns, a three picks, only been sacked three times, and you'll probably hear a lot about him on the broadcast for several different reasons. But it's also worth noting that he's also their leading rusher. And what you need to know about Retslaff is he's pretty stereotypical for what a college quarterback is, and that he has a lot of potential and a missile attached to his right shoulder, but his decision-making and accuracy aren't exactly the best. Of the quarterbacks' case state has faced this year, though, he might be the most mobile of them so far. Will he end up being the most mobile out of all the quarterbacks' case state faces? No, absolutely not. But he's still mobile enough to where he's going to be used in the option game and can be a threat in scrambling situations. Another thing to watch for BYU is their running back room was really been hampered by injury up to this point. In fact, none of their running backs on roster have more than 25 carries, and none of them have more than 100 rushing yards. It's mostly because they were down to RB4 up against Wyoming, and I don't know whether or not those guys are going to be back, but it's still worth noting that they don't really have a lot of guys who have gotten a lot of touches this season. That sort of extends to the receiving room as well, where they have exactly one person who has gotten more than 10 catches, and that is Chase Roberts, a 6-4 wide receiver. Everyone else is hovering around the 4-6 mark, and they've only thrown for seven touchdowns as I'd noted before. So offensively, there's no really big standout players, and perhaps that's the reason why their third down efficiency rate is so bad. They're only converting third downs at a rate of 28%, which is, yeah, it's pretty bad. But on the defensive side of the ball, they're more of a very aggressive team that wants to throw a ton of different looks at you to sort of get you confused and to see what look is going to be best for them. In terms of the most notable players, there are two people that are gathering draft hype in this upcoming year, and that's Tyler Batty. Here's a defensive end. Batty's a pretty solid pass rusher, although he has yet to record a sack on this year, though I think he probably should have been credited for one up against SMU. Their defense is solid if not necessarily spectacular. Like I said, their main priority is going to be throwing a ton of different looks at you to see what frazzles you most. And that's sort of where BYU's biggest strength is. You're going to throw a bunch of different looks at you to try and confuse you and see what works best for them. But at the end of the day, the talent for this BYU team isn't necessarily the greatest. You can see that just going through their stats page that they don't really have that one guy on either side of the ball that is going to cause a ton of panic, although I will say that the receivers are generally fast and tall. So what do I project to happen down in Utah? Well, I project a little bit of a slow start from a team that hasn't had much in the way of experience on the road, especially with a starting quarterback, who had a iffy performance in his first road start at Tulane in Avery Johnson. Outside of that, though, I would sort of expect this game to be very, very ugly early. But I think K-State just has the talent to pull away from BYU despite the home field advantage for BYU. So if I had to project what to watch this game, I would say watch how K-State, the offensive line, handles the blitz because that's something that BYU is going to do and it has done against even the most experienced quarterbacks. They're going to try and make Avery Johnson uncomfortable as quickly and as often as possible. And that's just going to be their major game plan. On the defensive side of the ball for K-State, it'll be another matchup of seeing the K-State undersized corners going up against a collection of very tall receivers. But again, I see that being mostly a winning matchup for K-State in large part because the receivers for BYU aren't necessarily finesse guys and their quarterback isn't exactly the most accurate player either. If you were giving me a score projection on this, I would say that it's uncomfortable at first, but K-State ends up pulling away late and this ends up being a 28 to 14 wildcat victory. Thank you again to Scott Wildcat for having me on the show. And if you want to have a more comprehensive preview before the game, please be sure to check out the Aggieville alley cats with Connor and I, both giving the more detailed preview of what to watch in terms of schematics for BYU. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) - Hello everybody, my name is Connor Bounties. We're bringing you this week's Wildcat round up for Bosco's boys. Thank you again to Scott for having me on this episode of Bosco's boys. I'm Connor the Aggieville alley cats and you'll be hearing my co-host ace either before or after me and he'll be going over the K-State preview for this week. But I'll go to keep this short and sweet and get through some of the other happenings in the K-State world for this week. We'll go ahead and start out with the volleyball team. Volleyball, often a bit of a slow start this year on particularly relative to where expectations were. They're two and five now, after a not great start to the season. They did come back though with a victory on Thursday, September 12th. They got that against Lipscomb and a 3-1 victory. They dropped the first set 25-20 and then they went on to get better and better as every set went. So still not the best day for them. None of the sets were really blowouts either winning 27-25, 25-22 and 25-22 in those second through fourth sets. So a bit of a rough game. All things considered. But there were still some great individual performances particularly Meg Brown who was an absolutely phenomenal with 20 kills and just four attacking errors on the 34 attempts. She pretty much carried a K-State to victory. Izzy Shorszewski added 47 assists. Has a setter, then Ella Larkin had 19 digs on the back line as a little barrow. Simone Sims threw in 11 digs of her own rotating in and out. Then we saw some Kinsey Jones as well who we had not really seen much of. That in fact hadn't seen it at all until this match. And speaking of McKinsey Jones in that game against North Carolina the following Sunday, she actually got her first career start. Although unfortunately was an eight loss for K-State. K-State came out and they won a thrilling first set 20-26. But then after that they got blown out a second set 25-13 and then were absolutely in the third and fourth sets until the bitter end. But they couldn't quite come up with it. They really needed to win that third set and they just couldn't quite do it. They lose that 25-23 and then lost the fourth 25-22. Really rough hitting day for K-State against North Carolina. And they managed to get their average up to about 11%. But they were below 10% a majority of the day. So pretty rough showing there. Meg Brown came back down to Earth a little bit, not a bad day per se, but 13 kills seven errors, 34 attempts. But Alia Carter, 16 kills 12 errors though and did that on 65 attack attempts. Not the best. Elle Laredken had 17 digs. Simone Sims had 16 and a couple of aces as well. And other than that, it was a not so great day. Brenna Schmid had a couple solo blocks. Elle Laredken, Meg Brown each had one of their own. Miss Yves Rolszewski had 41 assists as the setter for K-State. But all in all, this was a pretty brutal game to lose. Again, K-State scheduled really, really tough to begin this volleyball season. And it's going to help them in their strength to schedule when it comes time for the committee to review how they've done. But at the end of the day, the record is two and five. And they're going to have to make up some ground. The pieces are there, but they're just a step short right now of where they really need to be. So hopefully, Jason Mann's filled to able to put things together. Because if you look back to last year, K-State did start out really, really slowly. And it was against a much worse schedule last year as well. But once we hit about the month of October, the volleyball team turned to a completely different animal. Really went on the offensive. So I guess maybe they're hoping that they'll do the same thing this year, but they'll have a strength of schedule to back it up at the very least. So keep an eye out on volleyball going forward. If nothing else matches in Morgan Family Arena are really fun to go to, I was able to get to both the Lipscomb and the North Carolina matches. And I really enjoyed both of those. They have dip and dots now as well. That's a draw for you. But they'll have a little bit more non-conference play. They'll wrap that up this upcoming week. Recording this full disclosure on a Tuesday, September 17th. They will play UC Santa Barbara on September 19th. That's a Thursday. Hopefully, they're able to get a win there. And then they'll face off against Oklahoma and Jason Mansfield's brother. Jason Mansfield's brother is the head coach at Oklahoma. That'll be on ESPNU as well. So a little bit of a larger audience there for KSA volleyball is September 22nd that Sunday the day after that BYU game. So if we're able to get out of bed by 4 p.m. then go ahead and try and give that a watch on Sunday in between NFL games, if you can. But rough start for volleyball, but still plenty of opportunities left on the schedule to rectify it. And once they get past the Oklahoma game, the following week, they're going to get right into conference play. And then it's going to be a dead sprint from there all the way to the end of November. So hopefully, they're able to write the ship a little bit. But we'll move into soccer now. There was only one match that we have to report on from the last whip around. That is the match against Colorado, who I believe was ranked number 17. They were ranked 19th at the time. And this was a pretty close match that K-State really hung around in. They end up losing one nil. But we saw a few things in this match that we don't often see from K-State. Wasn't able to watch this one is at the exact same time as the K-State Lipscomb volleyball match. But we can draw a few conclusions from the stat box that normally would be skewed heavily against K-State. But in this game, K-State was able to get off in near equal amount shots. As Colorado was able to. Colorado opening 23 shots total out from their team. 13 of those were on target. K-State getting 20 shots with just five on target, but still getting a lot more shots than normal. And I think that's something to write home about, honestly. Corner kicks, Colorado had more 10. It's a K-State 6, so a bit of an advantage there. But not a lot of fouls in this game either, especially relative to how many K-State seems to have given in the past eight fouls for K-State to Colorado's five. A handful of yellow cards given out in the waning moments of this match just before the match ended, one to each squad. But Colorado's got the long goal in this match, and it was in the 49th minute. So pretty early in the second half, and that was it. No other goals scored in this match. K-State's Murphy's Sheaf did a fantastic job yet again, and goal getting 12 saves in this one by K-State. Putting up 20 shots in conference play, not something that's happened very often. I believe K-State sports information put out the stat. I think only the third time that that's happened in conference play for K-State soccer ever. And that's in, I think, eight years roughly of participating in soccer. So that's a pretty big achievement there. And they'll have a few more games coming up here now. They took a week off after this Colorado match, and they're gonna go on a little road trip out east into the Eastern time zone. They have West Virginia, September 19th, Thursday. West Virginia's been a pretty good program in the past, so hopefully they can get a road result. And then that Sunday, September 22nd, they will get Cincinnati in the Cincinnati, and then they'll come back home. In the following Thursday, September 26th, they get Texas Tech at Boozer Family Park. So K-State's soccer right now, three, four, and one, three wins for losses and a draw. So definitely could have been a lot worse. Coming out of non-conference play, could have been better, lost probably a match or two that they shouldn't have, maybe should have been able to pick up a win where they got a draw. But as of late, they've been more competitive against some pretty quality teams. So maybe this is a step in the right direction for a squad that does utilize a lot of young talent. But the big news outside of the main sports has to be coming from the women's basketball team. That is in the form of a commitment from Jordan Spicer, a five star recruit out of Warrenton, Missouri from Lutheran High School. In fact, the day that I'm recording this, she actually got a rating bump. She was already a five star on ESPN. She was the 20th ranked player in the country. She just got a bump to number 10 in the country now. So top 10 five star commit for Jeff Mitty in the Cats. So a huge get here for Kansas State. She's a guard and is listed at six foot one. And you gotta think immediately that's your Serena Sundell replacement 'cause Serena Sundell is a senior this year, which is crazy to think about 'cause she's played so much basketball for K-State. But this will be her final year in a wildcat uniform. This is an absolutely massive, massive get for K-State. From what I could tell the limited recruiting information that is available, a lot of Iowa people seem to think that she was a lock to go to the hot guys. And so she ends up spurning Iowa and rolls with the K-State Wildcats instead. She also had some offers from TCU, Arkansas, and North Carolina. So a really, really good list of offers there for Jordan Spicer. And she'll come in and be an instant impact player. She also seems to have a rapport with Heron Sides who's currently on the roster. And from what I could tell, it seems like they may have been on the same AAU team or at least cross paths along the AAU. So there could be some overlap there. And it seems that there could be some chemistry there already for when Tara may be running the point and trying to find Jordan Spicer out on the wing 'cause that's one of her specialties is shooting. She had an AAU performance this past summer where she went 11 of 13 from three. So hopefully she can bring that shooting prowess with her to K-State. I think that just about does it for the wildcat roundup. K-State Baseball, I guess I'll briefly mention it, they have an open scrimmage against the clinic community college in October. That's like a month away. But the big news this week is definitely the commitment of five-star Jordan Spicer to the women's basketball team. The time you're listening to this, it'll have been about a week 'cause she committed, I think a couple of hours before the K-State Arizona game got going. So that was a huge commitment for Jeff Mitty and Kansas State. And hopefully there's some more to come. Fad, there's a couple of players that are pretty highly regarded from the state of Kansas, including another five-star who's ranked 18th. So hopefully Jeff Mitty is on the prowl there, 15th, excuse me. Thank you for listening to this wildcat roundup as part of the Bosco's Boys Whip Around. I'm Connor Balthazor. Kansas State is freakin' good. - They are really freakin' good. - They are freakin' good. - In our season preview episode, I believe I talked about this as being BYU wins a game every single season that they have no business winning. I think that game is Kansas State. I might be walking that back because Kansas State is really freakin' good. And it's probably been the best-looking team in the Big 12 so far this season. You, obviously last week, Friday night, I think it was absolutely dominated Arizona who was a big, no, no, I wouldn't say a favorite within the Big 12. But coming off the season, which they had last season, it was a top 20 matchup, 14 Kansas State versus 20 Arizona. Absolute thrashing, 31 to seven. Kansas State looked really good. A week prior to that, they had a close one on the road to Tulane. That was Avery Johnson's, I think, first road game was a starting quarterback. - Probably should've lost that game. They got build out on a really bad PI call. - Well, it was Avery Johnson's first road start. They were down early, came back, ended up winning that game in a week prior to start the season. They had a 41 to six win over Tennessee Martin, which is an FCS opponent, kind of similar to BYU's SIU win to start the year. How are we feeling? Do we still feel as if this is a game that BYU? I'm not gonna say BYU doesn't have a shot to win any game ever, but I'm candidly feeling less confident I think about this game than I typically would have felt coming into the year. I don't know if that's just a recency bias of watching them kind of stomp all over Arizona, or if it was just that this is a good, fun Kansas state team, Avery Johnson, really, really good. But your thoughts. - It says something, at least to me, that a lot of the reasons for optimism amongst BYU fans are like, "Hey, well, this is a September night game in Provo." We're not talking about football, really, and like the players on the field, it's more like, we don't lose these, right? Like, come on, this is our conference home opener, it's gonna be electric atmosphere, and ensure that I can play into it. But yeah, I think we need to respect just how good this team is. They also kind of seem, if you were to build a team that would likely get the BYU fans with a really mobile QB, that's been the one thing that's kind of been gashing us thus far. It's kind of a compliment to BYU defense because often they're running because nothing's opened down field and they've had problems pushing it down field. That might not be the case, but Kansas State is very good running team. DJ Giddens is averaging like 6.6 yards a carry. He currently has about three times as many yards as our leading rusher, who is Jake. There's a lot of things that you can harp on here. So win a bowl, absolutely, because you always capable of anything in great and terrible ways. But yeah, definitely give us this in your toughest home game and we all kind of agree on that. - Kansas State has two players that are averaging over six yards per carry with 25 or more carries. - It's gonna be, and it's a Chandler's point. The reasons I say BYU has a chance to win this game are all off-field related. The vibes of the 96th throwback, cotton bowl, uniforms, making an appearance is like my number one reason of like, BYU's wearing cool uniforms. Certainly that gives them a chance to win the game. An 8.30 p.m. kick, again, an 9.30 local for Kansas State, a home September night game. Like Chandler said, BYU doesn't really lose a lot of those. It's dating back to pre-COVID, right? We all remember the Utah game in '21. We all remember the Arizona State game and we certainly all remember the Baylor game in 2022. The BYU started 5-0 or 5-1 a season ago. They don't lose in September and they certainly don't lose home September night games. But again, that's like not a football reason to why BYU has a chance to win. I think if it does boil down to the X's and O's of why I think BYU would have a shot, it's because of that defense. I think they played a pretty, you know, fans were upset, I think, I wouldn't say upset. They were a little unimpressed by the defensive showing against Wyoming. I predicted a shutout win, 38-0. They ended up scoring a couple of touchdowns. One, albeit was when the backups were in and I think they had like seven freshmen out there. But still, I think BYU ran a pretty vanilla defense against Wyoming. I think they essentially said your quarterback can't throw. We're gonna just run all our basic packages and if he's good enough to beat us, he's not going to be. And that was exactly what happened. So I think that's the one thing where if BYU can hold Avery Johnson's legs in check, he only had, I think 150 passing yards against Arizona, but 110 rushing yards. He did have two touchdown passes, but he did a majority of his damage kind of on with his legs and on the ground. So if BYU can hold that in check, which counterpoint to that is if there's one Achilles heel to this BYU defense, it's that the quarterbacks have kind of run all over him. But if they can buckle in, Jack Kelly, I think using him as kind of a QB spy, have him tasked with keeping Avery Johnson contained. Then I think that's where BYU really gives himself a chance to win. And again, offensively, if Jake can just limit those turnovers, no dumb plays. And maybe do some Jake Retsloff things that we saw against Wyoming, where he's throwing back shoulder balls and escaping pressure and growing on the run to Darius Lasseter. Maybe a kick-for-turn touchdown like we saw from Kielen Marion. I don't know, like those, those are the things that would need to go right for BYU in order to win this game. I think if BYU has got to have a chance, it's got to be a low scoring game though. Keep it in the 20s. - Like I wrote in my reasons, BYU will in every single game article. I did point out that BYU's 14 and two in the month of September over the last four seasons, there's one four straight against ranked opponents dating back to 2019. So there's the off-the-field reasons. Like, Lavella, where it's steady and matters, right? Like we say, that's an off-the-field reason. Late night game, Lavella-- - But are literally the field. - Like that is, that's a pretty significant advantage. And it's shown that it can swing games in BYU's way against ranked opponents. That BYU is not favored against. But I also wrote that assuming J-Hills defense takes a step forward in year two, which they have definitely taken a step forward, BYU wins in a rock fight. Like, I think that this game will be a, is going to have to be a defensive struggle for BYU to win. To kind of harp on your point about Avery Johnson, he is a very unique running threat. He might be one of the most athletic quarterbacks in college football. Again, played a similar type of schedule to what J-Cretzoff has. PFF currently has him as the 58th ranked quarterback with a 74.2 passing grade this season. So like, there was literally a point this season where Kansas State fans were questioning if Avery should be benched, because he wasn't playing well enough against Tulane to, so really, we're like Kansas State fans and I. But like, again, he's a true freshman. Lavella Rhodes Stadium is going to be a really tough place. Sorry, Redshirt Freshman. - Redshirt Freshman. - Redshirt Freshman. Set first P5 Road start. That's going to be tough for anybody. The running, like obviously the running game is amazing. I think BYU has shown enough against all levels of competition that I think they're just good. Like, I think their linebackers are awesome. I think the defensive line has shown really well. Kansas State's offensive line has not looked all that dominant this year. Avery Johnson has only been pressured 26% of his snaps, but he's been pressured on 33% of his snaps, which shows that opposing defenses can key on Avery Johnson even without sending a blitz. I think that's something that BYU can key in on. One of the reasons BYU was so successful stopping the pass against Wyoming is because Wyoming had no other choice but to go with a seven-man protection for most of the game, which kind of kept BYUAs past Russian check. But what that results in is you got six defenders covering three guys. Kansas State doesn't have great wide receivers. Like, this is not a game where I expect Kansas State to throw for more than like 200 yards. So really it comes down to, can you keep their running backs in check? BYU has kept every running back they've played against in check, only one running back this season has gone for more than 35 yards in a game. And the one who did ran for like three and a half yards per carry. So I think there's some optimism that the defense offers. On the flip side, Kansas State's defense, their front seven's really good. They're really good against the run. That's really concerning for BYU is yet to figure out their run game. And it's like maybe Pokai-ha-unga is the guy, but who knows? They're secondaries, they're secondaries tough. Against Tulane, they gave up 342 yards passing to Darian Mensa. They're gettable in the air. And Darian Mensa is a very like high volume, high volatility kind of quarterback similar to Jake Retsloff, that's the model. Like Tulane almost beat Kansas State, probably should have beaten Kansas State because Tulane was able to get big chunks through the air. That is exactly why I think you have to play Jake Retsloff in this game. And I think it's why you probably have to play in the entire game because Kansas State is too good against the run for any other game plan. Like the triple option offense with Gary Bohan and just isn't going to get it done. So I think Jake gives BYU the best chance to win. And I think he's going to have to play really, really well. And by really, really well, I mean like 250 yards, twice as many touchdowns as turnover-worthy plays in order for BYU to have a chance. And even then, I think it's still going to have to be a defensive struggle because Kansas State's front seven is that good. So let's say Jake finishes with a stat line of 226 passing yards, 48 rushing yards, two touchdowns, one interception. BYU wins or loses. - I think probably win, to be honest with you. - For me at all, I think BYU's defense is really good. Like, I don't think- - I don't think he has five bumbles. - He also got helicoptered against Wyoming and held onto that ball. So congratulations, Jake. - He did to get there. - At the risk of sounding like that Michigan fan that made the rounds for saying that Texas is going to lose to Michigan because Texas won't score more than 10 points. I don't think Kansas State is getting above 30 in this game. Is that- - If BYU's going to have a chance to win, I think that they can't be in the 30s. BYU's not winning a shootout against this Kansas State team. Absolutely. - No. - You gotta keep him to like 24 or less, I think. - I think you gotta keep Avery Johnson under like 75 rushing yards. - Like, it's gotta be the two lane stat line, right? Against two lane, he was 15 of 23, 181 yards, 40 something rush yards. Like, that's the formula. Granted, Dylan Edwards and DJ Gibbons ran all over. - He had 114 yards. - And Dylan Edwards had 13 and a half yards per carry. So like, they're running backs who are like really freaking good. Like, if we're about to find out how good BYU's rush defenses in this game. - Difference in that game, too, was the defensive score for Kansas State. So like, the offense did enough to keep them in the game and then it was the defense that ultimately sealed it. So, I mean, you mentioned Avery Johnson, you can get pressure on him without necessarily having to blitz. The question is, is if you get pressure on him, does he turn and run for chunk yardage plays? Because that's ultimately, when SIU had success in week one, that's their quarterback, right? Kind of ran wild. When Wyoming was moving the ball, it's because they're quarterback Savadka, whatever, Savadka. I wanna say the Frank Savadka from the wire. I know that's not right, but when Wyoming was moving the ball, he was running for a first down. Like, anytime an offense has been able to move the ball on the BYU defense, it's because the quarterback is able to run and Avery Johnson's the best running quarterback BYU has faced obviously to this point in the season and may face all season long. We'll see what kind of state Jalen Daniels is in, but even a healthy Jalen Daniels. I'd probably say Avery Johnson's a better running threat. So, it's just how contained can you keep him? You know, it's gonna be his first P4 Roadstart, his first conference Roadstart. Again, we talked about it like night game at LaBelle, Edward Stadium is BYU's best chance at winning. I agree though, wholeheartedly, you gotta keep Kansas State in the 20s at most if BYU is gonna have a chance to win. What was the final score of that two overtime game against Baylor in 2022? Wasn't it like 26? - 27 to 20. - Like, it's gotta be something like that, right? Like, and that's with two overtime periods. So, if BYU is gonna wanna win, I think it's gotta be something similar to that, something similar to when BYU beat Utah in 2021, 26, 17. Like, it's gotta be that kind of game, I think, for BYU, if they're gonna win. And the good news is, is that when BYU gets wins at home, night games at LES, like those are the kind of games that typically happen. So, that gives me some hope for sure. - I mean, like Arizona's defense is not very good. Kansas State managed 31 points. Like, it's not like-- - Should've had more. Avery Johnson forgot how it worked. - That was, that was a, again, another reason maybe that BYU can have a chance. It's not like, like, in Kansas State had what? 393 yards of offense against Arizona. Like, Arizona's defense is not very good. They gave up, what, 30-something points to New Mexico. Um, like, it's not out of the realm of possibility that BYU's defense can keep Kansas State's offense in check. It's just a matter of, like, literally, it just comes down to Jake Wretzoff. Can he be explosive enough while limiting the turnover-worthy plays that BYU generates enough offense to win this football game? And like, I, I'm of the opinion that, I better hope that that happens because there is going to be hell to pay on my timeline if Jake Wretzoff does, in fact, flop. - Yeah, well, I'll have to deactivate Twitter again. (laughing) I don't know, I, there's really only one path to victory in this game for BYU and it's that. It's Jake Wretzoff playing like, Jake Wretzoff played against Wyoming, playing like he played. Honestly, playing like he did against Oklahoma without the turnovers, right? Like, we've seen him, we've seen him be productive against power five opponents before. It was just like the mind-boggling, bone-headed plays where he just got sped up. We'll see what happens, but I don't know, it's the high-trained podcast, so I'm definitely always going to favor BYU in any of these match-ups, but it's going to have to be a rock fight. - Score and hot take. - I think 20, I'm going to go with 24, 21. - Okay. One way or the other. I'm going to pick BYU because it's what we do here, but. - In the small asterisks, I'll say, or Kansas State. - Yeah, I, I think 20 BYU and more maybe Kansas State. - That's going to be about the final, I think that's going to be about the final score. I think it is going to be a low scoring kind of game. - So you think BYU covers regardless then? - I do. - I think it's really hard for me to, it's really hard for me to think that BYU in a night game in September at LaVilla Street Stadium is not going to keep this one remotely close. Chandler. - I, before Joe spoke up and picked either team to win. I had 23, 21 in my head but for BYU. So last second, Wilfaire. - It's taking the Chandler role, baby. (laughing) - They give me a Wilfaire and feel the goal of the last second to win. - Electric. - I'm going to go Jake Gretzoff no turnovers for my hot take. - Stealing Travers. - Travers said 31, 28 BYU, Jake Gretzoff. - Fine, I'll go, I'll go three sacks. I think BYU doubles, Kansas State sacks allowed in this game. - Chandler. - I'm leading, I'm somewhere between Chase Roberts and Darius Laster, I'm doing the Joe back and forth. It could be either or Chase Roberts or Darius Laster. I'll go with Chase here for 100 yards in touch. - Just because I think this would be BYU's best chance at winning, I'm going to say BYU 20, Kansas State 17. - Nice. - And my hot take, go ahead. - Go ahead. I was just going to say side note, I referenced Kansas State's offensive line. This just can't be right. - Kansas State has allowed 26 pressures on the season. 20 of them came without a blitz. That feels insane. - Okay, my hot take is going to be two and a half sacks by Jack Kelly. - I love it. - Ah, man. - Jack Kelly. - I think, again, there's a path here, man. There's a path here, as great as Kansas State looked against, like as great as the Kansas State defense looked in keeping Noa Fafida in company in check. Again, Arizona's defense gave up 470 yards and 39 points to New Mexico. That's not a great defense and Kansas State did not look. - That's my worry, though, is that Kansas State can keep Noa Fafida and McMillan in check. What are they going to do to Jake Rutsoff and Chase. - I mean, no Fafida had a better game against Kansas State than it is against Northern Arizona. So what are the- - There's no touchdowns in one pick. - Yeah, like against Northern Arizona, Fafida was 173 yards, one touchdown, one interception. So, again, there's a path here. I don't think Kansas State is unbeatable. I think they have a 70% chance of winning this game according to FBI, that probably feels about right. But I don't know, there's definitely a path to victory here if especially if Jake Rutsoff can take care of the football. - All we need is a path to victory. - Just give us a path, Lavella Woods Stadium, we'll get you there, man. To any Kansas State fans listening to this, as I understand this will be part of Kansas State's preview show, first of all, thank you for listening to 30 minutes of us ramble about your team from three absolute non-ball knowers. Really appreciate that. Second, welcome to Provo, man. We are really stoked to host you guys. We hope we kick your butt and go out for ice cream afterwards. - Kansas State fans have been awesome on Twitter. It started as like eight week roasting BYU fans and quickly changed into roasting Utah fans as soon as like they got involved. - They just can't help themselves. - They can't help themselves. And then they're like, oh yeah, Utah, but BYU fans just like the worst people on earth. And then it quickly turned into like the clean shaven, squeaky, clean spongebob with a missionary tag being like, "Hey, nice to meet ya." - I know. - Like it's... Any brother in arms who roasts Utah with us is a friend of mine.
