G'day friends, it's Blisterguy and for Friday the 20th of September it's episode 1362 of Walk to Work in Mobile, Hearthstone podcast. Why I love playing Big Shaman although I think if I look at the graphic I couldn't fit the playing so this is why I love Big Shaman but it holds. So I know I talked about this at the end of yesterday's episode and as I started talking about it I realized oh my god I just want to keep talking about this deck. It's not the only deck I've been playing this month in standard. By any stretch of imagination in fact last night I was trying out a mech warrior deck that a few players had been taking to high legend and it was working and sometimes it wasn't. Like I would say a lot of my losses this month have come from playing things that aren't Big Shaman and a lot of my wins have become playing things that were and obviously not all of them like some of the wins come from when I was playing MechWarrior and Winning and other times not. I even tried a new version of big spell maze this morning. There's a new tech in town which is not surfleapodding like you can play just cheaper spells in collection, galactic, projectile, all that stuff. A lot of fun things around and I've been trying a lot of them but that doesn't mean I don't love Big Shaman. I do. I do love Big Shaman. Now I should not get carried away so let's thank a patron right? Let's remember to do the things the housekeeping before I get too carried away waxing lyrical about a shaman deck and the interesting thing of course here is that I will often say that I don't feel like playing Shaman. I think like for Wizbang's workshop I think I didn't play Shaman almost the whole expansion. I just didn't feel like it. Anyway, today patrons patreon.com/plistaguy if you want to support the work we do thank you to all of them but in particular today Torby Flanderson. Now that's a name if you listen to other podcasts with Hearthstone Space which you should. Why wouldn't you? You'll hear Torby's name there too. He's a very big supporter of a lot of podcasts. Actually several of the patrons here probably are and I just keep forgetting but Torby Flanders' name it's just got his good ring to it. I'm going to hear it. I'm like oh Torby he's one of ours. So thank you to Torby and all the other patrons who support the work we do here at Walk to Work mobile Hearthstone podcast and I guess all the other podcasts. It really does go a long way to help to frame the costs we incur doing this stuff because getting these words into your ears is not free because you know I guess why should it be. Anyway big shaman. Now there's a couple of things to start with on this deck. Usually when we call a deck big something it refers to a deck that a deck that only has big minions. In fact there has been big shamans before in Wild and it still is actually big challenge. They're putting things like Nip to London to play, glug the goal for all that stuff and they don't have cheap minions because the mechanisms with which they're cheating the stuff into play tend to be like just put a random minion from your hand into play. So you don't want small minions cluttering all that up. So big decks in general, oh my gosh I really have to be careful that phrasing, tend to be large minions and stuff to get you there. However big shaman as we have it in in standard today doesn't necessarily do that and part of it is just that this it's this beautiful puzzle that just comes together and like I don't even know where you're supposed to start. I know where I'm going to start but I'm not sure where I'm supposed to start when describing how this deck pulls together. In fact something about the the beauty of this deck list I think and it's it's not perfect like there are no mini set cards in this deck but there are versions out there that do have one like there's the ice-crown brochure or whatever it's called which is neat because it flips between fire and frost so you can you know adjust as needed for whatever your resle-desler needs and things. That's quite cute but the version I've been playing doesn't have that. People used to play chill vibes because it's another frost belt it's quite good but was since cut that. People used to run only one. I've got the card names in front of me. Molted magma. I keep saying cup of magma. Molted magma. People used to run only one but I've been running two for the longest time and I see a lot of other people running two now as well. Sorry the phrasing there implied that I was a forerunner in the running two. I don't think anyone's paying attention to what I'm playing at least of all because I haven't been posting lists or anything. I just was like oh Molted magma is too good. You got to have two. You need it for anyway. There's a lot of little interlocking puzzles and things and this reminded me of several things in life that I enjoy. One of them is this is just the kind of deck I enjoy playing not just because it has big minions. That's not usually what I like playing but because of the the interesting the the duality of some of the card choices and what they do in the deck. Like in what you can do with them. Like there's a lot of do I do this or do I do that? Oh my gosh it's very windy this morning. Why is it so windy? It's not usually windy in the mornings. Anyway I think the key card in this deck is fairy tale forest and I know when I was talking about this at the end of yesterday's episode now I was forgetting the names of cards but I have all the cards in front of me now because I'm playing the list today as you can see so I have a list on my phone in front of me. I can read it as long as I watch where I'm going when I cross the street. Fairy tale forest is the key to this deck and I do often feel like unless I have a specific set of cards in my opening hand for the match up and I'm not going to go too much into that kind of stuff because I don't know for sure right but generally what I'm doing is I'm hard mulliganing for fairy tale forest because everything everything works off that. The deck is so much better if you can play a fairy tale forest on term 3 or 4 and just start using it. It's just anyway. One of the things this reminds me of and I promise you you're not going to know what story is going. I was in Wellington in the early 2000s Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. If you didn't know much about New Zealand you would assume Auckland given Auckland has passed the population but no it's Wellington. Wellington's at the bottom of the North Island. I believe I was probably in Wellington for a New Zealand National Championships. Now yeah this is due with magic and it's not but it I'll touch on that as well and I feel like I was there with friends which makes me think it must have been for the National Champs but also my ex-wife was there. I don't talk about the fact that I have an ex-wife very often. I have two wives. Well I've had two wives. The other one is an ex-wife. The marriage that you are familiar with now is my second marriage. There's a lot of story behind that which I probably won't go into but anyway it was my ex-wife. A friend of hers who happened to be going out with a friend of mine so we were all up there together and I assume because I know that he played magic we were there for the New Zealand National Championships. I don't really remember her coming to any of those events but I kind of think she did and I think also it was just that one I think that was the last one because obviously she's like well you guys are well and truly distracted. What was the point? It must be anyway. We stayed in a hostel which was you know it's not quite a hotel because we were young and poor and they had this like community hall where they could serve food and breakfast. I went down there and one of the things on the menu was pancakes with maple syrup, bacon and bananas and I remember looking at that going what hang on bananas on pancakes sure but bacon with maple syrup I don't understand and like I know that this kind of culinary thing these days is quite common but at the time that was unusual especially in New Zealand and I remember trying it I remember being really really pleasantly surprised by it so wow this all works together the saltiness of the bacon with the sweetness of the maple syrup and the bananas like it all actually compliments each other and obviously you know that's just how fancy culinary stuff works these days but I remember being really pleasantly surprised by that and I don't think I've had that exact dish ever since but I have you know grown to appreciate putting maple syrup on say every things sometimes like when you're cooking tomatoes by the way a dollop of maple syrup in there is actually amazing maybe it's not for everyone but a friend of mine in New York taught me that one also I should isn't aside that friend of mine New York Brian David Marshall lovely guy really I have every time a day for him and I know he does for me every time we see each other which is not often was like who am I vibes he he is one of the original inspirations for this very podcast he and Mike Flores used to have a podcast called top 8 games I'll tap a top 8 magic because BDM is top 8 games anyway they would record it on the streets of New York complete with background noise and that them doing that made me go I could do this there's nothing wrong with having background noise so like shout out stem every time all day all because BDM just the best anyway maple syrup tomatoes when you cooking anyway that's beside the point I was struck by this recipe is going this is this is really out of the ordinary but it comes together nicely so when we normally talk about in Hearthstone big decks oh my gosh big piles of cards with big minions this deck does not really resemble there but why is it the kind deck that I love because it's not just the traditional big pile of cards it has a whole bunch of other stuff going it has a razzle dazzler it has like a spell package to feed razzle dazzler it has fairy tale forest to be drawing the not very many battle cry minions you have and then it also has the big minions as well it's like it just it reminds me of some of my favorite magic cards of all time one of my favorite magic cards of all time is actually obnoxious people to play against but I loved it was called sense as divining top it's like an artifact that you put in play just cost once it's really cheap to play and then you could pay one mana which in Hearthstone I was always talking about having one mana leftovers very easy one mana to look at top three cards if you deck and rearrange them that's the annoying part about the get the card when anyone else is playing it because you can pay through pay one mana look at top three and you think about it for a bit you rearrange them and then you might do something that shuffles your deck and then you pay one more and look at top three again that's just so mind-numbing to play against but when it was in standard constructed like I loved playing it there was a like even when I shouldn't be I should be playing I love messing around with stuff and that card I think encapsulates some of the things I like about magic and card games and the reason I play the decks that I do other cards that I liked there was one called Squeagoblin the Bob which was a three mana one-one legendary and it was in your graveyard it just came back to your hand it's not actually very good but it would be kind of this like cute thing that you could do as an engine thing like it it drove all kind of neat combos that you could do that that people like it's just unusual stuff I like the unusual stuff so anyway back to this big shaman the key thing I think is fair tell forest the three mana location two durability when you use it you draw a battle cry minion and reduces cost by one this deck only has three battle cry minions and has two of these locations which means at least one of these locations is going to waste if not one of the durability if not two of the durability is going to waste if you naturally draw any of the the battle cry minions potentially I've definitely drawn all three battle cry minions for ago well I guess the very tell forest are off but it doesn't matter because what you want them for is to draw them and the reason you want to draw these battle cry minions is because you don't want to pull them out with cliff dive now cliff dives the demon had to spell from pears and paradise the six mana epic summon two minions from your deck they gain rush and at the end of turn put them back in your deck clearly a very good card if you're only playing big minions when I reviewed this card in the pre-release area of perils I was like well I don't know does demon had to want to be doing this what I should have been thinking is like good just shaman want to be doing this I think shaman does want to be doing this the only downside of that of course is that you have to play cookie to be able to do this which means sometimes cookie can be a bit of a dud draw from the from the watchful quote from the cliff dive but also don't fret about that too much because like sometimes that can actually work for you and but you don't keep cooking your own hand because what you really need to do is hard mulligan for the fairy tale forest every time now when you're playing a deck that wants to only pull certain minions you want to have a lot of spells so that you are almost always pulling out the same big minions and we won't talk too much about those big minions we won't I guess I'm close to the park and I'm still not how can I think that I was going to do a holiday it's because I talked about maple syrup bacon eggs anyway there's a home spell package to support razzle dazzler which is one of the three or two of the three battle crime minions you're pulling out because you don't want very many minions because then your cliff dives aren't inconsistent and so you have a bunch of spells and it just so helps that those spells will feed a razzle dazzler which is the battle crime minions that you can pull from your fairy tale forest on top of that of course having cookie in the deck for the cliff dives means you can also have it for a sigil of skydiving and skirting deer now skirting gets three mana take four attack from a minion and you gain that much attack so if it's only a two attack minion you're only getting two attack and it's a shadow spell that's not something shaman usually has access to and sigil skydiving is a fell spell not something that shaman usually has access to so just by having cookie in the decks that you can play cliff diving you also get these fell and shadow spells to feed you a razzle dazzler it's like there's all these little weird combos that come together there's all complementary things like bacon and banana and maple syrup anyway on top of that like you don't necessarily want to be playing skirting death just for the fact the shadow spell but you are also playing horn of the windlord which is the six mana winfury weapon the three four for six with winfury and so if you play turn the tides which is the shaman nature spell which gives you a three three with rush and plus three attack and overlook one while you have a horn of the windlord and play you suddenly have six attack and you can attack twice it's only 12 face damage if you have a horn of the windlord and play and you play skirting death and and turn the tides and let's assume you're skirting death is for plus four now you've got eleven attack with winfury like there's another angle you can get a lot of damage and still wins there's just so many little complementary things that come together in the stack to make it work there's just so much fun now I mentioned the cookie being a bit of a low roll of the cliff dive one of the main things you're pulling off cliff dive is walking mountain which walking walk to work like what's not to love their walking mountain is actually an homage to walking fountain which is an old card walking fountain was a eight mana four eight with winfury rush and life steal so it was like shaman if they could get that point they could play this thing and it would attack twice and heal for a ton and take the fact walking mountain is nine mana and it's four sixteen and has mega winfury so it can attack four times and it overlords you too which has mattered a bit but that's beside the point pulling that out with a cliff dive you can just erase your opponent's board and sometimes at the cost of the walking mountain like it might actually die in the process which is where when you pull out a cookie in a walking mountain you're like well let's shame my walking mountain is gonna die yeah but then it's gonna turn into a random ten drop so I don't actually mind that it was even a cookie you see what I mean there's so many little combos you've got muck pools in there for you know evolving things that you've pulled out with cliff dive so you don't have to put them back. Collegana's a great fun not everyone runs Collegan but I enjoy it I saw McBanderface was playing so it's still worth it. Collegana you pull out that's the like eight mana six ten rush whenever it attacks a minion you put it in your hand and deathrattle give it back to their hand but like cliff dives putting it back in your deck right it's not gonna be there to deathrattle that minion's yours now and you've stolen it or muck pools to evolve it like so many fun things the whole thing about this deck is because this weird little puzzle of stuff that doesn't make sense that comes together to make sense like maple syrup on bananas and bacon and pancakes I just enjoy playing this deck so much and it works and it's good like I think Vicious Syndicate said it's in tier one it's so much fun and of course I get to play my my mythic Ragnaros skin that I saved my pocket money for it's a very nice skin it's expensive I don't fault anyone for not buying it but my goodness it's more it's nice we should probably do an episode talking about this up somewhere but it's not today because today I was waxing lyrical about cliff dive shaman big shaman it's not really big but it is big but like anyway a lot of neat things and I've enjoyed every time I played the stick I've enjoyed it every time I've tried other decks I've enjoyed those but then wanted to go back to cliff dive shaman I've just played cliff dive shaman so much this month I've played shaman more in perils and paradise than I have in probably Badlands and Wizbangs workshop and potentially even Titans before that like yeah it's great anyway we should get into the game and play some Hearthstone with cliff dive shaman because why not because it's fun right so turn in the volume up open the game we're past the park we're clearly it's gonna go too late if we're not careful but I just love playing this deck because I think this is the kind of thing I love the way that something quirky that comes together and just works really well and like sometimes thanks I do I do play but I have to admit it's just something about it being a quirky pile of things that come together and works really well shifts kids that's what it is anyway where are we 3,000 something legend I think 3,258 which is a good 800 fire I guess or lower whichever you want to look at it then I was yesterday when some you lose some they just you go up and you go down so I'm doing right I'm quite happy just to keep playing regardless of how it goes because I'm enjoying a lot of the stuff and standard it's weird apparently the miniset didn't break everything after all or maybe it did but I could do a whole episode on that too by the way a broken metagame is still a metagame I enjoy quite often I'm not entirely sure why anyway we're queuing up for touchdown let's go because it's just too fun not to I just walked past a guy who reminded me of a naval we used to have and the naval we used to have was actually a famous Australian musician which is quite sobering when you think about it we were renting in an apartment and this guy like a lot of people I didn't know of them but a lot of people in Australia didn't know of them but here he is just renting apartment here like what does that say about entertainment industry anyway we haven't had any hand we were muggling a lot of stuff this is actually a really good question we have an opponent that is a warrior no sir it's a warlock I've got to get that right warlock is fast we can't afford to keep anything slow and already handed it's probably not a great matchup for us in this we can have what we need we have a cliff dive in our new hand and we're here with coin it's quite actually tempting to keep that here because with warlock is the opponent this might be something that saves us we must have a walking mountain which we clearly don't want an arity hand horn the windlord we don't want out any hand but golden if the thunder also can be quite good against shaman whether you're doing three to everything and healing for a bunch or 20 to something it's kind of but I don't think I can afford to keep cliff dive and golden if I didn't have cliff dive I would be tempted to keep golden if because it'd be like well this is something that could save my bacon but I can't keep both and if I'm keeping just one I think it's cliff dive the risk here is course is that the first thing we do is turn five cliff dive it might not be enough but let's see the warlock is kept oh god is it full keep we got back the other walking mountain which is not great because we want the odds of us drawing a walking mountain from the cliff dive to be higher there's a flame in turn one but what we did get back with two molten magma so we're just gonna be jamming those and oh gross we threw the second walking mountain in the first cut so worth looking at now is the fact that we are not going to get a walking mountain off our cliff dive which is really terrible for us they've just played a L meeting geo turn two there's a horn of the windlord this drawer is terrible that's right so we molten magma killing the geode and dealing one damage to the claimant and then we'll probably do the same again next year to kill the claimant I mean this helps they're not play party themed I guess there's a malefic rock so a flame in mid to L meeting geode into malefic rock is clearly the the drawer that they want as a pain warlock not terrific for us so we've just drawn pop up book I think we are clearly going to be doing a second multimeter stand to finish off the flame and then pop up book on the malefic rook because then at that point it'll be a five three at least and we'll have a couple of zero one points to slow it down but we really are not in a good way we're hoping at this point that we can get to cliff dive and cliff dive pulls out maybe golf in there we won't get the plane you spell so cheap but it will get to finish off things like this malefic rook and or maybe stuff like yolks are on to just make everything attacking to each other but the problem is is we are quite likely to draw things like hagather and razzle desolate so malted magma pop up book next turn we can do two more multi-magmas because we have the second one in our hand and we just got a hope that we can get to the dive and we don't lower all the cliff dive problem is of course without fairy tale farce we are more likely to lower all the cliff dive because we're not pulling out hagather and the resin as well as there's a second aluminium geode not though we were under any illusions that they were going to be Reno so they're just now played in a prison horror for zero mana this is the drop them and then a mass production this is putting them to eleven with one mile left so they're getting pretty close to mountain giants which is not great for us as they're turn four they have a five three attacks into one of our frogs there's a second mass production putting them to eight please don't play a mountain giant on turn four and in a prison think I'm looking real I mean if I can find eight damage from hand that's not bad this is the second horn of the windlord we're close to actually having lethal next turn so what we're gonna do we're gonna multi-magma that kills the element in geo put into six we're gonna play second or five a second multi-magma just cuz it's been some money back who've done a hero part they're on four if they don't play an infernal well it's infernal isn't it catalyters heal themselves to fifteen we might actually just kill them with coin horn of the windlord but we'll see how we go they have a four two and a five one flame em oh that puts them to one and they've got four man left it's got to be infernal there it is infernal so that heals them to fifteen they take us for five minutes nineteen that means we could play the horn of the windlord thing maybe skirting death if we play horn of the windlord with the coin we could maybe find lethal next turn by going skirting death on something and going face for seven and seven but we would have to go horn of the windlord into the infernal which will put us on sixteen allow them to attack us back for twelve which is a bit dicey hope they don't have another infernal and then maybe try to go lethal next turn like the other option is cliff diving right now if we cliff dive and we miss which is I think kind of likely because we've still got residence up there so coin on the windlord let's pray all right we go face tank just here infernal that puts us to sixteen now we do three more damage to them put them to twelve if they don't have a taunt next turn or something else to heal themselves and they don't have four damage from hand the four damage from hand is not unlikely they could do it I'm not exactly sure how actually maybe they can't but anyway we can hope behind lethal next turn with the skirting death but this is not going well for us either way this game is over pretty quick maybe we keep you again I know I'm getting close to the train station but still all right so they've got a five-on millific rook that's attacking to eleven four two imprisoned horror that's attacking me to seven they've got a three two flame imp they're on twelve by the way there's a trolley problem discarding a skirt bomb giving them a cup of three trees that's really good news because it's not killing us they put it up they've put us to four and passed the turn so skirting death on their millific rook that gives me seven attack we go face-to-seven we go face-to-seven and they die oooh crikey I kind of want to kill again but also don't want to kill again so no sometimes the games can go long I think this is a good example that like this is not how we expected this game to go right they went turn one flame up turn to elementing geode turn three millific rook yeah okay they've taken ten damage themselves at this point this is where leads you open to it to one of the world luth lethal we had a terrible draw we kept a cliff dive which is a little risky like any other matchup I think I'm hard mallegging in the cliff dive because I want to find fairy tale forest and the reason I'm not queuing up again is because I didn't actually talk about Hagatha I know I talked briefly about Hagatha yesterday but Hagatha is the the third battle chromium that I talked about for the fairy tale forest Hagatha is a legendary 4-4-3 draw two spells that cost five or more and turn them into slimes I never really realized what the slimes cost but they the slimes are basically the size of the spell so when you draw a frosty decor you get a 5-5 that also plays frosty decor if you draw a cliff dive you get a 6/6 that also plays cliff dive advantage to it being a 6/6 at place cliff dive is it doesn't count as a spell so if you pull that go underneath the thunder you now also get to play a spell for three less it's obvious like clearly what we want to do here in the deck is hard mulligan for fairy tale forest so that we can make sure that we don't have razzle dazzlers and Hagatha in our deck or at least not many of them we can get a single fairy tale forest we're pulling two of the three battle crime minions out of the deck which makes the cliff dives so much better one of those three battle crime minions is Hagatha and Hagatha will hopefully find us a cliff dive so like the dream jurors to be able to play fairy tale forest into Hagatha into maybe the frosty decor to survive into cliff dive and it being great because you've pruned out so many battle crime minions and you can naturally draw the third battle crime minion to make it better that kind of stuff what we had in this game a warlock opponent now warlock opponents can be pain warlock they can be insanity warlock they can do a heck of a lot of damage and quickly and they can get a lot of stats in play and so even though I knew that the the favorite game plan of the stick is to get fairy tale forest down pull out the razzle dazzlers and all the Hagatha's get copies of cliff dive with Hagatha like how good is that your fairy tale forest maybe probably finds you Hagatha which maybe probably finds you cliff dive like there's some real consistency on what the deck can do there but we took a chance we kept the cliff dive we didn't play it on the on the six-minute turn with the coin five-minute turn with the coin we didn't play it even though we kept it we took a chance that's like okay this is gonna be something that saves our bacon and by saves our bacon I assume what we were going to do is pull out a walking mountain and again because we haven't fairy tale forest to pull out the other stuff there's a chance we don't but I was thinking okay our chance to be at a warlock deck like this is to high-roll to hit the walking mountain on the cliff dive on turn five have it clean up what they're doing and heal us for all the damage they've done early on maybe it goes back into the deck maybe it dies in the process maybe we pulled cookie at the same time so it evolves into a ten drop so many good ten drops or whatever like maybe we just hit Golgenev of it and all Golgenev does just three damage to all enemies and heals all allies for six still fine right like may not be perfect but we were taking a chance that that's something we could do immediately mulligan back into the other walking mountain drew the second walking mountain oh our cliff dive is now a lot worse a lot worse because the big things that we can draw that by us time and life and our collar gun and Yoggs are on Yoggs are on it's pretty good at clearing the board collar gun not so much takes one thing off the board puts it in your hand they won't get it back because collar gonna go away but it's probably not enough right and then you hit like reservoir dazzlers and hagather and gosh at that point you're not letting them go back into the deck because you can't afford to not because you can't afford to draw them but because you die if you don't right and so now you have to have a four four or a four through the rush which this face it is okay but it's not really what you wanted so having those walking mountains and hand meant that the cliff dive was just a lot worse now but then they kept doing damage to themselves and I was like hmm we've drawn one of the windlord if we drop one of the windlord on turn five with the coin I mean we had lethal if they didn't play the infernal and then they did play the infernal but then it's like okay can we take out the infernal get a little bit of face damage in assume they're not playing weapon removal because generally a pain wall it does not assume they don't have the second infernal if they have the second infernal we lose it's just that's just how that goes and it's possible they did but they don't always assume they don't have the second infernal and then just go for it with the skirting gift withdrawn so like I found a lethal in there through an unlikely means like that's what I love about the stick now there's a train here I should probably get on this one so let's sign off follow me on Twitch Twitter and YouTube @blistaguy follow the podcast walk to workHS on Twitter and come hang out and discord discord.me/blistaguy oh I see we're only 27 minutes I must have walked too quickly that's his day out of breath but you know how it is and I look it's always a pleasure to have you join me for my walk to work good luck everyone and everything you do because you're all absolute bloody legends and I love you all I hope you can understand why I love the stick now did you see that we were so unfavored there we were losing until we didn't this station is Wilson's point you you
