[coughing] [whistling] [whistling] [whistling] [whistling] [whistling] [whistling] Sorry for that rough cut. That was my attempt to do the correct term, Piano Sonata by Scarlatti. He was a baroque composer like JS Bach. The period that ended in 1750 with Bach's death, I'm just using my earbuds if they're not too distracting, maybe in the future I'll use my fancier rig. I'm David Zeppen, Z is a zero, A is an apple, P-E-N which you write with. You can support my efforts by visiting www.zapintech.com where you can buy reasonably priced mechanical watches as well as rose, gold colored smartwatches. Not the fanciest but with a better price point. This is my prototype of the show, Range South Nation. [whistling] Okay, false alarm. So what this is about is... [whistling] After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the 41st President, George H.W. Bush, promised us a... ...peace dividend, and the Warren Kuwait distracted from that, diverting money, manpower, attention, for reasons still unclear, we had no treaty with them, unlike our current situation with Ukraine, which at least was an anti-proliferation treaty. So the sad truth is, and a greater mind to me have said this, America did not win the Cold War, 1945 to 1990. Milton Friedman and the Chicago Boys won. So yes, the Soviet Union was defeated, but according to Greg Palast, regular guest on the Tom Hartman show, Pina Che, whom America created, to rule Trilay, Austine Aende, helped to pick Vladimir Putin. So once again, we're slaying our own monsters, or in this case, failing to. I can't help that. Maybe if I had read the alternate history of President Michael Dukakis, but all I have is a thank you letter from him, from my debating on his behalf, back in the '80s election, when it was too young to vote. So there was a time magazine cover about whiz kids, including a young Masi Oka. You have seen his name in the end credits of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. You have seen him on television shows, like Heroes, usually Opposite, George McKay, and in some episodes of the rebooted Hawaii 5-0. We whiz kids with our knowledge of computers and other technologies. We're going to need unions. Yeah, that's a happy thought. Around 1986, there was a law passed, an agreement between President Ronald Reagan and House Speaker Tip O'Neill, that guaranteed a social security surplus for decades. A surplus that is winding down down. There was no similar deal between the boomers, mostly born after 1945, and the Genectors, like myself, born around 1970. Keep in mind Vice President Kamala Harris is a late boomer, not a Genector, sorry. And so what's happened since what I've called the Thirty Years War to decide what happens after the Cold War is wage theft nation. Let's make it personal. In March of 1987, I was part of a one-week trip to New York City. The Statue of Liberty was still under a scaffold, just like in certain movies. I saw the Broadway show. I'm not Rappaport, starring Hal Linden, not Judd Hirsch, of Barney Miller fame, not Taxi fame. And my group visited the building where the Jewish Torahs were handwritten on parchment. Fine and good. There's also a video that introduced the idea of what's normal. They wouldn't drive commutes one hour in the morning, eight to nine, then again in the afternoon, five to six. They left out the part about hypercommuting, supercommuting for hours, meeting an apartment elsewhere to get through the week. Because that's what's happened, certainly in my experience. Anyway, so that was March of 1987. Me as a handsome young teen. So soon after that, I was ordered to get a job. Fine. Got a fast food job, three and a half dollars an hour, just above the, what, 335 minimum wage, plus one free meal. Ooh, that was one another. Five dollars worth of back then. So jump ahead to do, sorry, several months later, I started to work for the big supermarket. I mean, slightly more, about 365 plus the tips were not supposed to get this rational. So here's the problem. Jump ahead to 1994. I'm struggling to stay in grad school. And I'm making a giant five dollars an hour. That's the supermarket chain. Several years to jump to eight dollars an hour. I try to get a transfer to get a better apartment. Nope. So in 2001, I took a go to after I retired. I started working five dollars an hour, but it's not 1994 anymore. It's 2004. How does this make sense for someone who's earned a, well, I started college in '89 with a five percent down payment on my bachelor's. In '93, I have my bachelor's with a dean's list award. But I get accepted in a graduate school, belatedly. Moving in, not in August, but Labor Day. What could go wrong? So they belatedly let me in. Oh, they were punishing me for my bad grades in calculus and organic chemistry because that's a relevant history. And so despite two letters of recommendation, I get kicked out. In '96 through '99, I get an associate's in computer information systems analysis on top of my bachelor's in history. Which I wasted all that time commuting, hopping two buses each way. Why? Nobody wanted the associates. I knew that in advance. But what do I know? If I was so smart, I'd be rich. So they were here I am again, 2004, with at least a teaching license in history. Oh, and I'm substitute teaching, which in the Fort Lauderdale area does not count as an experience. Do you know that? Do they warn substitute teachers? Or are they now so desperate post-COVID? Allegedly post-COVID. Again, this is about poor me or my mean parents or my mean stepfather who's a pre-boomer and just died all day, you can say. No, it's a systemic flaw. I can have these problems. Did I mention I was a national merit semi-finalist? Top 1% of my class, as far as those test scores. My grades, barely top 1/3. But again, when you've had 5% of a bachelor's degree in hand before your first class, it kind of helps. Even if you fail the entry exam to take calculus directly. Alright, fine. So what went wrong? What happened? Well, a couple things. You might want to watch the movie "The Front Runner" and not just because it's Hugh Jackman. One theory is Roger Stone set up Donna Rice to lure Gary Hart onto the boat monkey business. Again, another pre-boomer. Unquestioned intelligence and intent, but different logic, different lifestyle. So, maybe if he had stayed off that boat, maybe he would have blocked George H.W. Bush from the White House. Well, never know. But it didn't help. So, there's a house of Bush, a house of sod, of how close he was, with the Saudi family, going back at least a generation before him. This is Danny, Senator Prescott. So, we can talk Bush crime family all we want. But as usual, it's a bigger problem. So what's the solution? Because we Gen Xers, we're literally the lost generation. I don't know if Chad, Steve McQueen, who just died at 63. One of the karate kids of the mid-80s, does he count as a Gen Xer? Oh, right, same age as the more famous Ralph Machio. We're a young Benji of Alf, Alf, of course, having a moment. The sitcom about Alien played by a puppet, apparently difficult to film. So, what do we do? Did Trump help us? No. I'm not gonna help us, probably not. So, do we just give up? Do we all, all of us with the ability to move out to a First World nation, like Japan or Canada, tempting? Some of us have the correct solution. Being a rental property sounds like a dream until you realize how much work goes into getting it ready. Sound complicated?
