It’s a fluid Tuesday afternoon with news circulating about the Eagles’ final roster decisions, from what to do with injured rookies like Trevor Keegan and Ainias Smith to how much to weigh summer performance from players like Thomas Booker, Eli Ricks and Tristin McCollum. For one more day, the focus is on the bottom of the roster.

Join Zach Berman and Bo Wulf for some whiparound coverage, including players waived elsewhere who might be of interest.

(upbeat music) - Hello everybody and welcome to the PHLI Eagles Podcast. High two on a Tuesday afternoon roster cut down day. We are counting it down about an hour and 59 minutes until four o'clock. We'll hear from Howie Roseman and Nick Siriani there after. We got some movement in shaking, Zach Berman, including a scoop from you. Give us the news. - A nice Smith Eagles fifth round pick is going on injured reserve. There's an ankle injury that's going to keep him sideline minor standing four to six weeks. - Now, is this the kind of thing where Julia may be familiar with this, the perception that there are word of mouth, some doctors around the city you go to say, "Oh, I got a bad back," or "I might have early onset glaucoma." Could you hook me up with a little something? Is this that kind of deal for a nice kid? The Eagles found the doctor who could find something in the ankle. - I know the perception is out there. And so we can discuss that here because it does seem convenient, similar to the way Donnell Pumphrey had what a hamstring injury, Alex McAllister, I believe, one year, I covered Victor Cruz, the Giants, as a rookie, he had a good camp and there was an injury that they were able. My understanding is that you can't just create an injury out of thin air. There's documentation that you send the league. - The league monitors these things. - Exactly. Now, you did a great piece a few years ago on Jason Kelsey, on his body during the year. And one thing that stood out to me is, I think he had a quote in there that everyone's injured. It's just, there's a matter of degree, there's a matter of what you can play through. So, yeah, look, if a niac myth was AJ Brown and the same injury, my presumption is that he would not be on IR, but my understanding is this is not something that like they picked up out of thin air. We talk about phantom IR that there is an injury here that they had an MRI, the MRI revealed the injury. It's going to take four to six weeks, he's eligible, they can designate him today. - So this is gonna be interesting 'cause we don't know yet, right? We're gonna find out just a little bit about what they think of a niac myth and how ready he might be because the rules this year are for the guys who you may want to bring back at Cutdown Day. If you're trying to save some space, you do have to designate those ahead of time as designated to return. They count against the eight that you get allotted for the season. This is different than in the regular season, when you put a guy on injured reserve, you don't have to designate that ahead of time. It doesn't count against the eight until they begin their practice window. So you, every team gets two of these? - Yes. - If they use one-- - The first time that this is happening-- - If they use one on a niac myth, then maybe it does mean that they expect him to be part of some kind of rotation at some point down this season. My guess, I mean, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if he just goes right on IR. But I feel like the reporting that you have that there is this expected timeframe, maybe they are gonna use the designation of-- - Yeah, so I think the designation to return spots, you're more apt to use them now to use the two now because there's ways of getting around an injury during the season. - For sure, you can just carry a guy, yeah. - Yeah, you can carry a guy and you can elevate him. Be like, you don't have to designate him to return like you mentioned until he's actually ready to return to practice during the season. So if there's a fringe player who gets hurt during the season, you can place him on IR and then you can-- - Right, and if you need him, yeah. - Exactly, so the facts, when you talk about a niac myth or Trevor Keegan or, I mean, you and I can disagree on this Kate Stearns, I think you're more apt to use that designation today than any other time because it preserves the possibility they can't come back. - All right, interesting. Now is your understanding that a niac myth would have been on this roster, if not for this injury? - I can't say that. We had our mock conversations yesterday where I outlined my-- - I'm sorry, what? - Sorry. - We had Nick and Studio. - We had Nick and Studio. And I wrote this in my 53 and I get it. I've already missed some, but I thought that a niac myth would-- I thought the acquisition of John Dodson would give him a little more flexibility there at depth-wide receiver, that they would carry him and because they don't need him right away, they can keep him inactive early on, but not necessarily to exposing the waivers. It's the question that Nick posed to Vic Fangio yesterday about, or maybe it was Kellen Moore, I forget what you want. - Who's to say? - About when a draft pick is cut, do teams go based on their college scouting reports today? Because these seem to haven't always seen much of a niac myth, right? So they see Bo's great practice observations about House House Smith's doing, assuming they're subscribers to PHOI, Die Hard Members, and they see the tweets and whatnot, but they don't have all the information, so they're probably going based off college film. So there's a team that liked him, that had a fifth round grade on him, they might be more apt to claim him now. I thought that a week ago they were not going to keep him. This week, they were going to keep him, but IR certainly creates a safe landing spot for him. - It's convenient. - It's convenient, yeah. - And by the way, the show today presented by our friends at Bet365, download the Bet365 app and use code PHOI365 when you sign up and find out why it is never ordinary at Bet365. Okay, Zach, first of all, nice job on the scoop. I know it's just another day in the office. - And good, let's not, honestly, yeah. I'm just trying to serve our audience, that's all. - Okay, so we don't have a ton yet. We do know that Andre Sam, who we talked about on the show yesterday, for whatever reason, Sir Yani, really pushing that one yesterday, that did not come to fruition. And EJ Jenkins, which is the first dent on my personal 53, did not make the team, reportedly waived. Not a huge surprise that they're going with two tight ends. I would imagine this is an area where they're gonna try to look to add from elsewhere. - Yeah, so the Andre Sam news reported by Andrew Dececo. - Dececo's been all over this. - Yeah, yeah, a very good job by Andrew. And then, as I saw Mike Garifolo had the EJ Jenkins news, we'll start with EJ Jenkins. I think this is notable for the reason you just said, because I imagine barring a trade a cut down similar to last year, they acquired Albert O, right before the wire. Barring a trade. - If Albert O makes the 53, I'm not doing the show to him. - He's getting waived. But barring that, you're going to see two tight ends on the 53. Now, not two tight ends active for the game. I imagine they'll have three active for the game. Jack Stole's been cut. We'll see some other guys who are a core cut. They could-- - If they bring back Stole, I'm not doing the show on Thursday. (laughing) - They could-- - Just on the active roster. If they bring him back to the practice squad, that's fine. I know Jalen trusts him. - They could just elevate EJ Jenkins. I'm assuming EJ Jenkins is not gonna get claimed. That's why I did not have him on my 53 for that reason. I didn't think he was gonna get claimed. We'll see. - Yeah, and by the way, people saying this is like a, this is a knock against the Bow Wolf Cam Crush. The Bow Wolf Cam Crush is not about guys making the 53 men roster. Guess who else didn't make the 53 men roster? DeAndre Carter, Coyote Awashika. - Elijah Riley. - Elijah Riley. These guys who went, it's about identifying the talent. So just 'cause the former Cam Crush, Lou Nichols gets waived, doesn't mean that he's not gonna go on to success in the NFL elsewhere. Same for EJ Jenkins. This is a long arc that we're talking about, not just making the 53. - Thanks for clearing that up. I think that was important. - Just people don't understand, like. You know, "Oh, Coyote, it didn't make the roster." Guess what? You guys starting playoff games. - Would you say the buzz is palpable about the Cam Crush? - No, I wouldn't. This is not quite-- - It's not bad. - The Ben Vanschoomer and Malatite Corley hype train. (laughing) - Did I use it for Corley? - No, that was, I believe, a great CoSail. - Oh, okay. - Do you have any other surprise or worthwhile Eagles wave news so far? Anything that made you blink? Julian Aquara? - Yeah, so they cut the vested veterans yesterday. Which, if you're reading between the lines, maybe that's a good sign for Nick Gates, or even a Brett Tov. The four guys-- - Warren Burks as well. - Warren Burks, yeah. Now, it might just be those decisions we're already made. So, it's something worth monitoring. When I say the guys who are cut, join Aquara, Max Sharping, Will Greer. And then the one-- - Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. - So, and then, Perry Nickerson. Great call by you that they signed you. - One of the great calls of all time. - One of the great calls of all time. Yeah, nothing has surprised me to date. The Andre Sam thing, again, that was a little bit of a swing on my end. I thought that undrafted rookie, they had this history of keeping undrafted rookies. Like we said, of the undrafted rookies, he had the best chance of making the team. I thought that-- - I think Gabe Hall is still a possibility. - Interesting, okay. - I think it's possible that he stays over Tui. - Well, we'll get to that, 'cause I have some ideas there. So-- - Oh, all right. - And then, the other thing is all the snaps that they-- - Rudy Ford has been waved, that's too bad, or released. - That's what you interrupted me for, Rudy Ford. - Rudy Ford. - I'll take that, you're right. - Yeah, he's-- - Okay. - I'm Rudy Ford, one of the best trades. - Joy, do we have breaking news-- - Part of the best trade and how are those men's history? - Is there breaking news music? - And Jordan Matthews. - According to Adam Shafter. - Jordan Matthews, Jordan Matthews, I kept seeing clips on social and making catches, still hanging around. Yeah, so I also thought all the snaps Andre Sam played, particularly on special teams, might have been suggestive of a potential role for the team. Clearly, that was not the case. I was deciding between him and Tristan McColl, and I went with Sam, because I thought Sam was a better special teams player than McColl. But, look, I certainly wasn't up pounding the table on that one. - I mean, it felt like you were, well, Nick was. - I actually didn't, I don't think Nick pounded the table in yesterday's thing about Andre Sam. I just think he was presenting reasons why Andre Sam could be intriguing. - He was talking about how he saw some guy named Zach Berman's 53, that was the-- - Oh, that's what it was, yes. - Super chat from Brandon, who says, Zach, would you trade a fifth rounder for AJ Dylan from the Green Bay Packers protects against injury and helps relieve short-yardage bruising on Jalen and Seguan? - No, I would not. And I did like, I liked AJ Dylan coming out, and I liked AJ Dylan when we did our free agency exercise during the summer. Oh, I'm sorry, during the spring. If they were gonna add AJ Dylan, the time it will to have done that would have been March. I would not give up a fifth round pick for AJ Dylan. A matter of fact, I would think that you're gonna get a fifth round running back comparable to a, like the fifth round pick, the expected value of his probably possible-- - Just keep his price, if that's the key. If that's the thing that you want. - But I do like an AJ Dylan. - Yeah, I think he's fine. - I also think you say in there, Brandon, and I appreciate you watching and the super chat here, health relief, short-yardage bruising on Jalen and Seguan. - You know when he gives you that little butter up front, he's about to smack across the face, Brandon, watch out. - I don't think they want any relief for Seguan. I think the goal with Seguan is to run him, run him, run him, like give him a little bit this year. - Give him the ball. - Then mixture for sure. - I think two years of Seguan and I don't think they're worried about what the tread on the tires looks like after two years of Seguan. - Well, yeah, not after two years, but maybe in the middle of this season, although-- - But I think he's here to be, yeah. - Yeah, I don't think it's about protecting him. I think it's more about if he goes down and misses time because you're using him so much, then do you have somebody else who can do that stuff between the tackles? - Sure, now I do like David's price as Howie pointed out yesterday. - Yeah, and I mean, Bo Wolf. I had him on my 53 as a bit of an outlier, so we'll see how that goes. - Was that predictive or was that game theory because you're trying to win this, right? You don't want the same 53 as everybody else. I think you were the only one I've seen who had David's price on the 53. So was that because you thought it or because it's like if you're doing an NCAA tournament bracket, you don't want the same final force, everybody else? - No, I'm only doing what I think they're going to do. - Okay. - Yeah, I mean, there's game theory to that. - Sure. - Yeah. - Okay, yeah, we'll see. - If you're right, I don't think we'll ever hear the end of that one. I think David's price will be like, there's gonna be, we have this great show with Fran tonight coming up. We're gonna have an emergency show, a breakdown. I think if David's price is on the first 12 minutes, we'll be some type of bit. - I mean, that's a long stretch for a bit, but-- - That is a long stretch for me. We literally did an entire show and character yesterday. - The crown is back where it belongs. I'm sure they will be something. - I do want to tell the audience, we're gonna have some great substantive informative shows with Fran coming up. Not every Fran show is gonna be part of a-- We've got some fun stuff. Now, we do have Shiel scheduled for tomorrow again. I think it would be funny if we just continued to say that we have Shiel scheduled and he never comes in. I think that would actually be a good bit. And then on Thursday, we're gonna do the annual Springer wins and fly draft the next time that Fran is in. We will go through the overunters of NFL teams around the league, but make our overunder bets. So fun stuff coming up. Today is the last day when we're really gonna spend all of our energy talking about the bottom of the roster. After today and after tonight's emergency show, we're gonna set our sights on the stars of this team. - Let the record state that they thumbnail on today's show is Thomas Booker, not John Carter. - Julia, can you enter that into the record? (laughing) Thank you very much. All right, the record has such been reflected. Thank you Zach. All right, before we get going, and I wanna talk about Jahan Dodson and the trade and seeing some of the wide receivers who have already been waived or released around the league, whether you would still do that, whether it makes you feel different about the price there. But before we do that, Zach, let's spend a little bit more time unpacking our friends and what you can get at Bet365. Because Bet365 has, how many million users worldwide do you think they have, Zach? - I'm eager to find out. 90 million, it's like a full roster. Eagles got to go up to 91. Over to you, Mr. Berner. - Julia and Bo, if you think about our Gs and think about our Gs season, you're probably not thinking about the fall. You're usually thinking about the spring, I would imagine, right? - I'm thinking ragweed. - Well, it's important to know that there are fall allergies that are a big part of your life. They can begin as early as August and last into November. And the main culprits are, as you just said, ragweed and mold. There's other allergens that include plants such as sagebrush, timber, I'm sorry, tumbleweed and pigweed. I'm not really up in my weeds. Dust mites and pet dander. - Julia, you wanna jump in? - And pet dander and fur. Allergic reactions occur when your body misidentifies the substance such as pollen as harmful to the body. And then your immune system releases histamines to fight off the allergens, okay? Interestingly enough, these same histamines are also the cause of your allergy symptoms such as running nose, itchy or watery eyes or even wheezing. That's why antihistamines, medication that suppresses the amount of histamine in your body are often the first line of defense to treating your allergy symptoms. So why am I telling you this? Well, 'cause if you sign up for right aid rewards emails at rightaid.com/rewards, you can receive email pollen alerts for your area. You can use a dehumidifier which you can get at right aid and the dust mites and mold thrive in human environment. So a dehumidifier helps take the moisture out of the air so that these allergens can't grow. Shower frequently, that's important. And I often do that. If you wash the pollen and mold spores from your skin and hair, they are less likely to affect you. It's best to shower at night after you've been out all day. You should check your pollen counts, you should keep windows closed and use an air conditioner and wear a protective mask when gardening. That's important because allergens like to hang out in leaves and moist soil. You should wear a protective mask when you tend to your yard or your garden. Wearing long sleeves and gardening gloves can protect you from the elements as well. But also, okay, in addition to those ways of doing it, there's over-the-counter options. And these over-the-counter options are available at your local right aid. Try a nasal rinse to help flush out your nasal passages. When symptoms are flaring up or when you know that the pollen counts are high, you can try antihistamines. One to two weeks before the pollen allergies are expected to be high, you can try different nasal steroid type things. They're available at right aid. Just go to right aid, they're like a true expert. They're gonna help you, okay? Still not enough relief. Ask a right aid pharmacist. This is what I would do, okay? 'Cause I would be going through the aisle and I would say, what are the... - I mean, no steroids. - Yes, and the right aid pharmacist will tell me the different type of allergy medications like a decongestion might be necessary. You can always ask your right aid pharmacist for recommendations on ways to just get relief during allergy season. - Ernest Jones traded to the Titans Act. - While I was reading the right aid ad? - Yeah. - You see... - In such a short time of you reading that right aid ad, so I could imagine news could happen in just a blink of an eye. (laughs) - Was that really long? The right aid ad? I thought it was interesting. I always associated allergies with the spring, but they follow our genes and going to right aid for the relief. - I thought that ad was, you know, appropriately given the substance gone with the wind. - Wow, okay. I need to do better then. Ernest Jones to the Titans. What were your thoughts? - Sounds like Rams linebacker Ernest Jones is going to the Tennessee Titans Act. - Yes, exactly. - Yeah, I remember I talked about him as a possible trade. - Yes. - I was just telling you, I didn't need to give it. - I like it Ernest Jones. - Give it 85 minutes. - A good blitzing linebacker. - Yeah, good player. I'm surprised that the Rams are giving up on him. Now he's finally here with his deal. That's why we talked about them with some kind of trade candidate in the off season, but. - Yeah, Bernard Wilson putting together a linebacker court there in Tennessee. - I mean, you can't play football without a linebacker court, that's for sure. - He's got, he's already got Kenneth Murray. Now he gets Ernest Jones. - I mean, I don't know if it's a good one, but he's putting one together. - He is putting one together. Although the Titans released Caleb Farley today. Do you see that? - I know you liked him, yeah. - Yeah, coming out of Votek, what's wrong on that one? - That's okay. All right, let's talk wide receivers. So I want to know if your opinion of the Jahan Datsen trade changes a little bit, seeing what some of the transactions have been around the league. Now specifically, we're talking about Noah Brown being released by the Houston Texans. Terrorist Marshall being waived by the Carolina Panthers. Tim Patrick, getting waived yesterday. Coderias Tony is on the wire now. Do you think that the Eagles would have been better served trading a seventh round pick for Noah Brown than they were trading the equivalent of a late third early fourth round pick for Jahan Datsen? - Yes, I do, and I like Datsen. And so in a vacuum, I'd prefer Datsen to any of the players that were cut today. When you factor in price and roll, you're looking at the fifth option in the passing game at the point and Anthony brought this up on the emergency show and I thought it was a good point that you're also looking at the replacement for Devontae or AJ if one of them goes down. I think Datsen is better than those guys who are cut today. But I would rather a seventh for Noah Brown. I think Noah Brown is your third receiver, is an upgrade over what they had before. I like Terrace Marshall. He hasn't done much in the NFL. Granted, Carolina's been a weird situation since he got there. I get that, the three different coordinators. He was drafted in part because Joe Brady, he had such success with Joe Brady. Joe Brady brings him in and he barely has, you know, any time with Joe Brady. But yeah, and then Tim Patrick's been like, you know, a competent big slot in the league. It's been a while since. It's been a while. Of those guys, Noah Brown's the one who appeals to me the most. Now, Noah Brown, if he's starting opposite, Devontae Smith, if AJ were to go down, you don't love that. But I would rather preserve that extra third round pick and give up one of your seventh for Noah Brown if that's what it would have cost. Yeah, I think it tells us that the Jahan Donson trade was not just about filling the wide receiver three hole, right? Just sort of checking that box. I think it's more about chasing ceiling than, you know, securing a floor for the offense. For some of the reasons that you talked about, if, you know, AJ Brown and Devontae Smith misses time, you want a guy who plausibly can play on the outside. And I mean, I think the offense is better, certainly. Yes. On paper with Jahan Donson and Noah Brown, I don't know that it makes a functional difference. And like, it's a pretty significant change in the value. And the fact that Washington is giving up on him in the first place, you got to sort of talk yourself into, as we said, the idea that you get him here. And it's going to be a better situation for him. And, you know, opposing defenses will not treat him like the top option. I still am OK with it. I think it changes my perception of the value of it a little bit if they could have been a little bit more patient. But I still think you're talking about a guy who is young and has room to grow and has two years left of team control if you're just talking about the delta of the value. If Jahan Donson is a league average third wide receiver, he's probably on the open market making, you know, $7 million or something like that. And you're paying him less than a million. That's a nice value. I don't know. I still think I respect the move, although it is a little bit on my radar that so much of the moves the Eagles have made this off season has been chasing first round picks. Like, they've got added six guys who are first round picks this year. Like, what's the pro scouting staff up to? Like, go find me some guys that nobody knows about. I don't object to that, obviously. This is a strategy I've long endorsed. And so I certainly can't fault how if we're doing something that I would have done. And again, I like the player in Donson. Now, contract comes into play here. If you acquired no Brown, you would have taken on a $2 million guaranteed salary. OK. So he's on a one year deal. He's 28 years old. So Donson, you're telling more experience? True. Good blocker. That's not why you acquire someone. Sure. But yeah, I mean, Johan Donson, you get him at a decent price for two years under contract. In theory, I'm probably in practice as well. An ascending player. Yeah, to me, the Donson thing, it really just comes down to the player evaluation. Sure. Right? Like, if he is who they think it is, it's going to look like a good trade. And it will look like they didn't give up too much. If he is not that good or whatever it is that's going on, what the Washington coaching staff that carries over, and he's like Caderius Tony, who has a good rookie year, a promising rookie year, and then just sort of falls off, then it is going to look like a bad deal. And I know we should evaluate these trades with the information we have at the time. But I think this one sort of comes down to how good is the actual player. Yeah. Yeah, so I saw a clip circulate on social media. It was Peter Schrager, who's close with Cliff Kingsbury, talking about Cliff Kingsbury's rationale for trading for Marquis Brown. This was back in the 2022 draft, right? And basically, he was saying that Kingsbury loved like the top receivers in that draft. He didn't really like-- he thought they had no chance at Chris Olave and Jameson Williams and maybe Garrett Wilson, I've read specifically. But that they weren't as in love with Jahan Doss and Traitlin Burks. And so that was why they went and iterated for Hollywood Brown that year. But yeah, I mean, I imagine this is a Cliff Kingsbury, Adam Peters, evaluation here. The other thing too. And I saw this also from Peter Schrager, who does a great job. Don't roll out the commanders for Brandon Ayuk, who Adam Peters was in San Fran when they drafted him, was with a wide receiver for Jayden Daniels at Arizona State. Yeah, I would feel a lot better about the Doss and Traitlin for Ayuk, because then it explains why they're getting rid of him. Exactly. And because they get a third round pick, that's so-- so that's also something to a monitor here. I liked Doss and coming out of Penn State. So I'm intrigued by it. I just think we'll see what happens in April. I like the fact that the Eagles had three picks on day two. They still could. But I like the Trait Trip, the Trait Ship possibility. I thought that was important that they came out with that extra pick next year. But Doss in again, a young wide receiver and a sending player, no issue. OK. Who else around the league is curious to you at this stage? Zach, and I guess what were the positions, especially that you think the Eagles will be looking at? Yeah, so I spoke about nose tackle and Marlon T and how I wasn't-- Oh, this was your T's. We're following up on the T's. All right, are we going, hold on, hold on, hold on. Is this a down on Marlon T? Am I down on Marlon T? Relatively speaking on the roster? Well, I had him on my 53. But what you're about to say, is it-- Yes. OK, well, in that case, Zach, let's do our little ace temperature check, ace hardware temperature check. Unfortunately, it's a little bit cool on the Marlon T front. Zach, let's take a look at which eagle is heating up or cooling off with our ace hardware temperature check. Visit ace hardware home services online at www.acehardwarehomeservices.com to get started on your next project. The floor is yours. I'm real quick on the temperature check thing. I do want to make this note here. It's hot outside today. 64 schools in Philadelphia are being dismissed early today because they don't have proper air conditioning or cooling in their schools. And it brings to mind that J.ON Hertz donated $200,000 back in April for two air-conditioned 10 schools. And I think that's-- when I saw that on the news yesterday about those 64 schools, that came to mind. And as we said in April, like we discussed a lot about J.ON Hertz on the show, Good and Bad, I thought that was a real cool thing that he did no pun intended because it was very intentional. And you literally see, you know, I've had a lot of interaction with students in the Philadelphia public school district. And I remember a conversation one time about how hot it can get into schools. So I think that's-- yeah, I just want to make that note. I think that's cool. I think you should have intended the pun. OK, yeah. So anyways, the literal temperature or the actual temperature check here. Marlon, two below two I had on the 53 basically because I felt they needed a backup nose tackle. And he's the best of the backup nose tackles. I'm not overwhelmed with Marlon, two below two this summer. I'm not overwhelmed with Marlon, two below two over the past three years here in Philly. If they can get an upgrade to a below two family, it's not watching. If they can-- well, yikes. I'd like to only to eat below two if he's available. OK. Wow. Marlon's not watching. I actually-- I enjoy my interactions with Marlon. I'm just-- Just keeping it real here, right? This isn't about who you're friends with, who you're-- yeah, you just-- Zach Berman is the one who's saying this, Marlon. Yes, I am saying this, Marlon. I mean, I think that if they can get Siaka-- Oh, I'm sorry, Siaki Aika, third round pick. Really? Yeah. Out of bail or two years ago, 23 years old, he was a transfer from LSU. He's more of a natural nose tackle. I remember-- About that draft pedigree, here we go. I remember when the Brown's drafted-- now, I admit, I did not watch his film last year. I think Andrew Barry's a really smart GM. I think that-- I think he's a very smart GM. OK. I think the Browns are building a good team, and very curious to see what happens with their offensive line as they go forward here. But when I look at it, I didn't quite understand the fit in Jim Schwartz's defense. With my background covering Jim Schwartz, I didn't really-- yeah, I thought that Siaka Aika, more of a natural nose tackle, didn't really make sense in that defense. I think in this defense, as a backup to Jordan Davis, would make a lot more sense. So I see John saying big draft pedigree guy. Here's a third round pick. I mean, it's not like we're talking about Caleb Farley here. But I'm saying that I'd liked him during that draft process. I did look at him because it was a year when we thought that he could be looking at defensive tackles. And I think that from an upside perspective, from a body type perspective, I say, who's that natural backup nose tackle for Jordan Davis? I think Siaka Aika-- I think it was also-- remember, it was notable that Vic Fangio was asked about this and did not mention Marlon-- Marlon, exactly. I think I was one who asked him about it, actually. Yeah. Wow. I mean, I believe you. Because this has been on my radar for-- This is the radar? That's an antenna. That's an antenna. The antenna is up for this. My antenna has been up for backup nose tackle throughout the summer. When we spoke about depth at defensive tackle, often we kind of talk about the three technique. And I actually think Moro Ojamo and Thomas-- and Thomas Boker have given them solid depth there. I am very concerned about what happens if Jordan Davis goes down, who steps into that role. And that's why I am-- I would say put a claim in for Siaka Aika. It is also-- I mean, there are only so many people in the world who are that size. But it is a-- You don't have to tell me. But it is a position that can be found. Sure. And you're finding on the way for why on the street. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that's why I mean, there's a reason that he got waved, obviously. But yeah, OK. But it's-- I haven't been crushing the Siaka-- That's what I said. I'd like to Matt Bower. I'd like to Matt in Dave Aranda's defense. He came over from LSU with Dave Aranda. Dane Burglar, who-- I got to say, Dane, you are now my-- Well, I was always a Fran guy. But now that Fran's officially a draft analyst, right? Fran's now my number one draft analyst. Dane's my number two. Do you want to make that clear? OK. Who's your number three? Well, there's a lot of guys I respect. But I don't want to pick a third. But my power rankings are Fran and Dane. OK. OK. And Dane had, I believe, a second, third round grade on him coming out, a year ago. So something to monitor. OK. Well, that'll do it for the case. Hardware temperature check. Marlon Tuyapoloto. Sorry. I still think you're cool. And I thought he had a great practice against the Patriots in the joint practice. So he still got that going for him. Speaking of who else had a great practice that day-- Zach, this is one that's on my radar-- Mitchell Wilcox, the Patriots tight end, who was waived, formerly of the Cleveland Browns, I believe, as an undrafted player. Not draft pedigree. Not draft pedigree, undrafted. He was all over the place in that practice. And so if you think about one of the benefits of these things is you get guys on tape against the team that you already know, how do they perform. Mitchell Wilcox is the guy. And I do think that tight end, they're going to add somebody, obviously, with E.J. Jenkins being waived. Some other guys around the league, Peyton Henderson, waived by the Cowboys, one year with Kellen Moore, has a domestic violence incident in college that is on his rap sheet. But a player who people have connected to the Eagles. And Irv Smith, who I know is probably your guy because he's got the second round draft pedigree. But Mitchell Wilcox, the guy who I think might be on the Eagles' radar, if I'm just throwing a dart. Irv Smith, I like the one when he was with the Vikings. He hasn't quite clicked since then. He was in Cincinnati. He's bounced around a bit. I had Jody Fortson written down. He hasn't done much. He's more of a pass-catching tight end. And I think they'll probably look for more of the blocking type you mentioned, Jack Stoll. I'll trust you on Mitchell Wilcox. I did not watch as much of the Patriots offense that day. But the thing with these joint practices is you get eyes on these players. As you mentioned, the Eagles have acquired guys in the past. J.J. comes to mind that-- Fran is in the chat and he's giving you respect for him. He's appreciating that you ranked at number one. OK. Yeah, yeah, friends demand. I'm excited to hear Fran's perspective tonight. Fran's perspective, not as a coordinator, but as Fran. Yeah, so yeah, that's a good one. I'm very curious to see if Donald Parham is cut, because Donald Parham will be the guy that I would go after. I mean, if you get Parham, we should do something. Well, my fear is this. My fear is that you and I will be in the locker room next week. And I'm going to be very professional. And you're going to tell Donald Parham-- that's short-- Oh, it's already a fan of complete. That Parham is going to be in the locker room. No, but if that were to happen, I'm saying, if they were to get Donald Parham. We'll see. Convert to basketball player. And what is your fear? What am I going to do? No, it embarrass me in some way with Donald Parham. That's your fear. That's what's keeping you up at night. No, there are other things keeping me up at night. But that is-- now that you say it, that is one thing. I mean, I would definitely have to do something. You don't have to, you don't have to. I think I owe it to the audience. I was at this wedding this past weekend. It was a great wedding. Shout out to Mark Medina, a good friend of mine. Beautiful wedding. Were you able to enjoy it, even though you weren't at third preseason game? I watched the game the whole day. I mean, I was in the chat. Joy did an awesome job producing. And I enjoyed Fran and Jamie and your appearance. Your information was good. Not the gump, the gump it. I thought that was honestly the best decision I've made content lines in months. It was funny. But then when you stood up, you got like the cameras like all over the place. It's shaking. Well, sure. Your information was really good. I couldn't match your backdrop, so I could do something else. No, I'd like to be underneath that. What do you think of all that gump? It's gross. Yeah, it's pretty gross. Yeah, although I chew a lot of gump. And I will take the piece of paper out of my notebook, because I won't ask questions when I'm showing gump. So I'll take it out, and I'll wrap it up, and I'll put it in my pocket. And then sometimes I forget when I do my laundry. And then it's like you got your pockets are stuck together. Yeah. Oh, no. Well, no, I wrap it up so it's not sticky when it's in there. But then it's like after the wash, it gets stuck there. That's the problem. This is fascinating. This is something that happens often? Too often yet, because you'll see me. I'll be chewing gump. And then the press conference will start. And what do you do? Like, I'm definitely not going to do what these out of town reporters do and put it underneath the chair. Well, certainly not. You're not a psychopath. I sit in jail and hurt your seat. I can't do that. Right? So, yes. So what do I do? I wrap it up, and then I put it in my pocket. And then an hour goes by, and I forget about it. And then I do my wash later. But you don't empty your pockets before you put your clothes in the-- Well, I need to get in a habit of doing that, no. Otherwise, you just just robe and toss it right in. You're not checking? Because I take out my AirPods and my phone. OK. Yeah. But not so. Everything. I mean, I've made the AirPods mistake once before, but it actually worked out OK. I'd rather the gum mistake than the AirPods mistake. Well, you have a mind still. Mind still worked. OK, good. All right. Good. Well, I was trying to-- OK. So, we're at this wedding. And-- Oh, sticky pockets. Birmingham. Don't say that. It's weird. [LAUGHTER] It's a weird comment. I definitely don't want that name attached to me. So there's this reporter who I really respect who's there. Wow. This was a journal wedding. Yeah, yeah. Well, there are a lot of reporters who I really respect who was there. But there's just one-- In particular, more than the others. Well, I went up to her, and I said, I'm a big fan of your work and that kind of thing. And then Emily, my lovely wife, she says, tell her what you do. [LAUGHTER] It's like-- [LAUGHTER] Like you're like an 11-year-old boy. [INTERPOSING VOICES] It's like, tell them about your baseball team. Yeah. Exactly. So I feel like to get back to it, if Donald Porham's in the locker room-- Oh. Yeah. OK. I'll be like playing a cool, you know. And so did you tell her what you do? I mean, and she-- well, then she's like, what do you do? And then I was like, I cover the Philadelphia Eagles, yes. Right. And so was Emily like-- [INTERPOSING VOICES] [LAUGHTER] Yeah. I don't think it got quite the reaction that we was hoping for. [LAUGHTER] In any event, we were in Los Angeles, so. But-- [LAUGHTER] What does that mean? [LAUGHTER] What does that mean? What does that mean? That means if you're at a wedding in Philadelphia, and you say like-- I'll say what you're saying. Yeah. You're not as big of a deal. No, I'm not saying I'm not-- [INTERPOSING VOICES] If this was a Philadelphia wedding, the people would be coming up to you. No, I'm not saying that. People would be-- People would say, oh, how does jail and look? What do you think of Nick? That kind of thing, right? You're in a Los Angeles wedding. They don't want to know what's going on about the Eagles. OK. Well, you know who wants to know what's going on about the Eagles? You know who is from here? Kuegbenom will be placed on injured reserve after undergoing a core muscle repair. McLean says, according to an NFL source, he has a projected six to eight-week recovery timeline from the date of the procedure and will be eligible to return this season. And he goes on to say that they're going to open with two tight ends and could potentially be interested in a reunion with Jack Stoll. OK, we've got to wait and see what they're actually doing with these designations, because they can say that these guys are going to be eligible to return. But the proof is going to be in the pudding at four o'clock. If they're using a designated to return on Albert O, I think that's a bad process. I'm with you there. I haven't seen anything from Albert O in a year and in a training camp, in a season and in a training camp, to use one of these designations on him. Yeah, I mean, he was waived last summer. The Ingles were the only team willing to trade for him, because they gave the absolute minimum you could give. They signed him in for agency. Obviously, the rest of the league was not super interested. He didn't do anything this summer until he got hurt. They could have waived in to him and bring him back if they really want to keep him in the building. The league is not pounding down the door to get Albert O. And so if they are using both designations on Albert O and Anaya Smith, I think that is going to end up looking like a bad process. I think it is a bad process. Sure, Albert O is not the guy I would rush to keep back. Now, you could disagree with me on using one of those designations on Katie Stearns if it comes to that. You're all over the Stearns thing. I am all over the Stearns thing. It could be wrong there. Another guy who I feel like the league has spoken, you can still keep him in the building. The leagues, he was literally the top, the only team, the number one team on the waiver wire claimed him. And then he failed his physical. And then they cut him. So then the Eagles claimed him and they were what, 27th? Well, yeah, yeah, because he was hurt, right? And Deagles were willing to roster him for two weeks understanding he was hurt. He is a background. Now you can say he's probably gonna sign with you or practice at this point. But I would just pay attention to Katie Stearns. It could be wrong there. I was wrong on Andre Sam, OK? But yeah, Albert O would surprise me if they used one of their spots on him. Just keep checking on the news. D. S. Gridge, another guy with draft pedigree. Zach, former second round pick of the Seahawks. He has been waived. Yeah, it wasn't a big D. S. Gridge guy coming out. And not having a big enough school for you. Not that at all. Just didn't think he was a good enough player. OK, yikes. Now, by the way, Donald Parham was released. I just want to make that clear. Oh, yeah, OK. There we go. He got something cooking. Something cooking here. Well, maybe he was didn't need to trade for him. There you go. Some names I wanted to throw at you here. By the way, just quickly, the Ernest Jones. Yeah. It's a sixth for a fifth. Yeah, that's not very high. Yeah, interesting. So Ernie, not much value. I would actually think, I mean, it's similar to the CJ Garner Johnson trade from two years ago, right? We're a good player who's in the last year of his deal and a team's trading him at that point. Yeah, but that value tells you that it's not about-- they couldn't come to terms on an extension. It tells you that he, I think, lost his job. Sure. He wasn't going to be starting. Exactly. We've talked about safety and the safety situation. And the avantamatics, they're top backup safety right now. OK, we'll see what happens with James Bradbury, by the way. Nothing out yet on that. That could come down to the wire here. I still think the Eagles would try to trade him, would want to trade him. But some veterans, some names, but maybe they'll pass their prime, were reportedly cut. Desmond King, Torel Edmonds, who was here in Adrian Amos. Any of them jump out to you? No. OK, not Desmond King. Desmond King, someone who's interesting than me. Yeah, I mean, it was interesting three years ago. But I don't think that that's what they need. They don't need a veteran. If they wanted Eddie Jackson, they could have signed Eddie Jackson, right? I think, given that they have avantamatics, I think what they would want there is somebody who's a little bit more developmental. Does it concern you that the three safeties we're talking about here all have notable injuries? I think that that is a real thing. And that I think that would go into why they might keep a column if they do, is that CJ Gardner-Johnson has to prove that he can stay healthy. Reed Blanketchip was injured all throughout college and missed a little bit of time before in the NFL. And avantamatics hasn't proven he can stay healthy. So yes, I do think that is a real consideration for them and should be. Yeah, that's kind of on my radar here is safety depth as it is, but especially because it's one thing when you talk about a wide receiver depth, what happens if AJ Brown or Devontay Smith goes down? You can always say if you lose a top player, what does it look like? Those guys have remarkable injury history. Now I understand, I'm sorry, remarkable durability history. Not AJ before came here, yeah, but certainly these past two years, they haven't had to experience it. The flip side with safeties, all these safeties have missed time during the past two years. So that is something that's on my radar. And I also think I would look at it and say, well, you're a little bit fortified because you have Cooper Dajean and everybody thinks that that seems like a seamless transition. But it's also theoretical. I mean, we're talking about a rookie and, yeah, like we haven't seen him there. So on paper, that looks like a nice backup option, but it's something that they might be a little bit more worried about than we are. Good point. All right, we got about 10 minutes left. Go ahead. If I can here, I just want to go over the mechanics of what's going to happen here because at that-- Let's talk mechanics. Yeah, well, I think this is important, especially because I'm going on a plane a week from tonight to Brazil. The Eagles don't have a lot of time before they go to Brazil. They leave a week from tomorrow to go to Brazil. So there aren't going to be a lot of moves like this weekend for the Eagles. And these next 24 hours are really important because they really start their Packers prep tomorrow. So 4 PM today, like we said, is the deadline. Then we speak to Nick Sierraiani. How are we going to do this afternoon? Beau Fran and I have to have the show tonight. They have until, I believe, noon tomorrow to fill the practice squad. Is that right? No, waiver's processed tomorrow at noon. Yes, and then after that, you fill the practice squad. Exactly, thank you. Waiver's process at noon. So we'll find out the claims that you make then. The Eagles are on the practice field tomorrow afternoon. They practice on Wednesday. And on Thursday, this week, so they will be practicing tomorrow at 3 PM. Presumably with-- It gives them a little bit of extra time because it's 12 o'clock and then you sign these guys. Presumably with a 16-man practice squad in place unless you're bringing in someone from. If you're signing a practice squad player from elsewhere, you're claiming someone he won't be here by then. But they're on the practice field Wednesday and Thursday. And then the Eagles will be off on Friday, Saturday. But then they're back at practice Sunday next week. So Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, then they leave for Brazil on Wednesday. So this is all going to happen really fast. And I think these practices Wednesday, Thursday, will be more game plan-centric than typical this time of year. Yeah, I think that's right. That's a good point. Now, so Sunday will be like a Wednesday, Monday, like a Tuesday. I guess that's the idea for them. Yeah, and it's Tom Cawtham's cereal. He will throw him off. When I used to cover Tom-- I think if Tom Cawtham was here right now, a lot of things would throw him off. Tom Cawtham, when I covered the Giants and they had a Monday game-- I'd love to just have him teleported into the studio right now and just to see how confused he was. I think that thing that will confuse the most is the teleportation, right? It's like, I don't think the least-- I think it's like, how did I literally get here would be the part that would throw him off? Yeah. I mean, that would be discombobulating. What do you want to hear from-- Well, I guess we don't know the players who are caught. What do you want to hear from Howie Nick today? Yeah, I mean, it's hard to say because we don't know yet. But I imagine that Bradbury will be a discussion no matter what decision they make. The Dawson trade. The Dots from Howie. From Howie. Yeah, and now this is probably our last chance to talk to Howie until the end of the season, unless they do something at the deadline and he talks then. So what are your big picture questions for Howie? Yeah, big picture. I'm curious, you know, Jeffrey Lowery said at the owners' meetings that all the ingredients are there, right? And so I want to know, it's more of a Nick question, but Nick and Howie, like going into the year, do you feel like all the ingredients are there? Now, I know he's going to say, you have to go out and you have to do it, you know, you prove yourself every week, so on, so forth. But I am curious. Like, they haven't, to their credit, they haven't had one of these major injuries during the summer. You know, they're-- they haven't lost a starter yet, they've lost injury. So they have the team going into the summer that they thought they would have, or are going into the season that they thought they would have. The right guard situation played itself out. Macai Bechtin is going to be the starting right guard. So I think, though, that, like, big picture, do they feel like the ingredients are there going into the season? And what do you think he'll say? Just like, you know, we can't think like that. We just have to-- One week at a time. One week at a time. Once you think you've made it, you get kicked in the ass. There you go. Nice. OK, how about Nick? How tough was today for Nick? Well, he's definitely going to say that, yeah. How he will make a reference to that, too, right? I hope we know the players who are cut before. You remember that last year? I was like, ask about the guys, you know, right? No, the undrafted part of this is interesting. I'm also curious if they keep, like, a Davis price. And Thomas Booker kind of qualifies here, but he was on practice quite last year. But what's interesting to me is, and how he referenced this back during the draft, is the emphasis they placed on the future's deals? Could it be Canard as well? It's possible. Yeah, yeah, Darren Canard. So that jumps out to me because you don't typically see that. Typically, you're keeping some of these undrafted rookies. I think they placed more of an emphasis this year on the futures market. I think if they keep one of those guys, he would like that as a story. Like, well, we viewed-- We knew that this draft class was shallower than years passed, and so we did. We approached the future's deals as if it was undrafted for agency, and thought we could really make an impact that way. But if they keep two of these guys, then the purpose in the pudding, right? They did. I mean, and especially, like Davis price, got the biggest contract of any player on a future's deal. I feel like the-- we're a little bit behind, based on years past, right, by an hour ahead of time. We still get a lot of moves to be made, it feels like. Don't you think, to be reported? Yeah. Just in terms of the pacing of the trickling the news, feels like a-- there's a flurry coming soon. Sure. Well, and then, I mean, Fran's not here. You're also an alumni of thoughtoffuels.com. There was a year when, instead of putting out the roster-- Mm, they just updated the roster page. No, no, no. They put out a tweet with just like-- Oh, yeah. It was the headshot of everything. Oh, I hate that. That's so bad. It wasn't like the names. It was just-- it was like-- It was like the 60-second video of like each player for a second. And there was no link to a story. No, it's just like-- Actually, I think that was the Blankenship year. That's-- and you're going through-- There was two years ago. You're like pausing, writing down, pausing, writing down. Yeah. So that was-- that was a pretty tough one. I get the impetus to be like, let's do something fun for this. But like, it's so unhelpful, even if you're trying to disguise it. Like, your fans want to know who's on it. Like, they don't know exactly. Exactly. That's not helping anybody. Yeah, it's like the quarterbacks, and then boom, boom, boom. Yeah, it was like moving very fast. And it wasn't done by death chart. It was done, you know, just like right. So it might have been done like, numerically or alphabetically, whatever. So you would get like, you know, like Myles Sanders, like third among the running backs. Yeah. Yeah, that was weird. Yeah. OK. All right, any questions in the chat? We got two minutes to kill here. I'm waiting for news to break. Noah says, ZB, is there any chance to buy your new book from you in Brazil? He sent you a Twitter DM and would love to make it work. Yeah, Noah, I appreciate this. I want to make this work. The thing is, the book is not technically out until the 24th. Noah-- Maybe that's a rule only for within the continental United States. No, there's like, you know, there's books that like, you know, I have, and I'm giving them out maybe like a week before, right? But I got to see about three weeks before. But if you can DM me again, Noah, we'll try to make this work. Also, as far as like fan meetups in Brazil, I'm trying to figure out the logistics of that. I actually-- I was looking over something. There's a lot of like, rules within the stadium. Actually, one of the-- I think you'll find this interesting. I saw you can't wear a Brazilian national soccer team attire in the stadium. Interesting. Yeah, yeah, that's one of like the conduct rules on-- Interesting. --on the NFL's website. But like, if you're not ticketed, you can't be like around the stadium, you know, there's-- So I'm curious to see what it is as well. I don't know the logistics of the stadium yet in terms of like, how I can meet someone there. But if you're in Sao Paulo, definitely message me. We'll work to get together. And if I'm able to get you a book, or if you're local, or in the United States, and I can send it to you, that would probably be the preferable way of doing it. Your buddy, Jay Mack, Jeff McLean, does have another little bit of news. Paris Campbell has been cut by the Eagles. So the Eagles will enter the season, presuming that they end up waving Joseph and Gotta with five wide receivers on their active roster. I mean, presuming that Johnny Wilson makes it. Yes, yes, yes. Come and make it, yeah. Yes, with five on their active roster. And so I think your roster is looking pretty good right now. I don't want to speak too soon. It's going to come down to Davis Price and Nick Gates. That's what it's going to come down to. Those are the people that we're rooting for. Make sure you become a die-hard. I think Jimmy, if you want to look at the past champions, me, back to back to back. Jimmy, last year. No, Jimmy wasn't last year. Jimmy, two years ago, and then Andrew to check our last year. I did look at the differences that we have left, because I had Jenkins. They both had a nice myth. Jimmy has Josh Job and Trevor Keegan. I have Gates and Tyrion Davis Price. With Andrew, it's Gates Davis Price and I have Rick's. And he has Canard, Keegan, and McCollum. So the fact that we haven't seen reporting of Trevor Keegan potentially going to IR, and not good news for me, that was the bet that I made. So if Keegan is just straight up on the act of roster, a bit of a dent against me. Yeah, and for those wondering, the tie-breaker, because there were a number of people last year who got 51 out of 53, the tie-breakers to practice squad. You were on that tie-breaker, weren't you? Yeah, and I did not hit the practice squad. That's OK. There was one year when we were doing-- I don't want to name the reporter, but he had a great strategy. He submitted a roster of 55 players, which is a good way of getting off 53, right? Yeah, why not? And one other little note here is-- That's the thing, as the defending champion, you're in charge of grading it, and you've got to double check. You have to-- in your spreadsheet, you've got to make sure that everybody has actually 53 on their roster. And we have to make sure they're 16 on the practice squad, and 17, including Lincoln. Vakalahi. Yeah, Vakalahi. The Steelers released Quest Watkins today, too. I did see that. I should have mentioned that earlier. Yes. All right, that'll do it for this episode of the PHLY Eagles podcast. We're going to talk to you in four hours. So a one hour from now, the roster gets set. Shortly thereafter, we'll hear from Howie Roseman and Nick Siriani. And then at 7 o'clock, we've got a little remote action, emergency pod, Bo Wolf, Zach Berman, and Fran Duffy himself to talk about the shape of the Eagles roster. We look forward to all of that for all of us here at PHLY. But thank you for listening. Thank you for watching. We'll talk to you tonight. And as always, we love you.
