Arkansas SHOCKS Auburn for First SEC Win

Can the Arkansas Razorbacks maintain their momentum after a crucial SEC victory? The Razorbacks stunned Auburn with a 24-14 win, marking their first SEC triumph of the season. Despite a game marred by turnovers, Arkansas's defense shone brightly, forcing four interceptions and holding Auburn to just 14 points. However, offensive struggles persist, particularly with quarterback Taylen Green's passing accuracy, highlighting the need for a more versatile attack.

This episode explores Arkansas's position in the SEC, placing them alongside Texas A&M and South Carolina in a middle tier of uncertainty. With a matchup against Texas A&M on the horizon, the Razorbacks face a team with a questionable resume, offering a potential opportunity for another win.

Join us for an engaging analysis of Arkansas's defensive prowess and offensive challenges, and discover what lies ahead for the Razorbacks in the SEC.

It's nice. It's great to be able to come out here and talk about a victory for the Razorbacks as they were able to beat Auburn. You know, we talked about what if they beat Auburn? I did not predict them to beat Auburn, but I said multiple times. I would love nothing more than to be completely proven wrong, and that's essentially what happened. Arkansas gets the victory 24 to 14, and what was an extremely drunk game. I'm going to go through just kind of the reactions to it. We'll get into maybe the biggest problems, but also the biggest strengths of why this team can move forward. We'll also look ahead a little bit to Texas A&M. But my reaction to this game, folks, and I did a little bit of this on Inside Arkansas and Inside Arkansas Live. But my reaction to this is that I am thrilled that Arkansas won, because let's be honest, in college football and the SEC, no matter who it is. When you win an SEC game, especially on the road, it's a big deal. It's a big deal. And Auburn is not exactly an easy place to play. Auburn is not a team that you've exactly had a lot of success against here recently. You released over the past 10 years. And they're a team that has some major issues, but you got the victory. You didn't play well. You didn't exactly set the world on fire in some capacities. But again, we'll talk about that part of it. But the thing is, I am happy they won, but I'm still concerned. I still feel the same way that I did before the game started. Like none of my questions got answered. I still have no idea what this team is. I still have no idea how good they are. I still don't know how bad they are. I don't know what an A game looks like. I don't know that we've seen the best of what this team can be. I don't know if the offense is great or fits so-so. There's just so much I don't know. And that was the thing I was hoping to see, at least, in this game is to have some questions answered. And there are-- and I don't know, even if it was a good answer or a bad answer, it was still going to be an answer. And I feel no differently right now. But that's OK. That's OK, because a win is a win is a win. And you're going to be able to get it. Now, there were a lot of key parts in this game that Arkansas had going on. I mean, Isaiah Satania, that big play, that 58-yard touchdown catch, was one of the highlights of the day as you had just to kind of throw it up and go get it in a Satania who hasn't really done a whole lot this season. We haven't seen a whole lot of them, but definitely saw some of his chaps there. That was a big play. Got to see a little bit of the defense really come forth and play really big, too, especially when it came to causing turnovers. Because that was kind of the thing that I felt like in this game that the mistakes, who was going to have the most turnovers there, well, and ended up being Auburn. I mean, they threw four interceptions in this one. TJ Metcalf had two of them. Stephen Dick Jr., or-- yeah, TJ Metcalf had two of them. Nico Slaughter had one, as well as Jane Johnson had one. And then you also had a force fumble by TJ Metcalf, which, I mean, he had a heck of a game. It's an absolute heck of a game. Four tackles for him, two. So two pass breakups. Who's phenomenal? And Arkansas's defense, they get my game ball if there was one. I know that Sam Pittman gave the game ball, technically, to Travis Williams. And he showed up because of the course connections with him being-- was that an Auburn alum and all that. But they held Auburn to 14 points. Again, it goes back to you go into someone's house and you hold another team to only two touchdowns. I don't care how pretty it was. I don't care what it looks like. That's a phenomenal job. And the fact that you were able to do it in large part because of your secondary. And on top of that, also, without two of your top three defensive backs with Jalen Braxton and Hudson Clark now playing here, I mean, you couldn't say enough about it. The defense did their job. They held a team, an SEC team, to 14 points in their home stadium. They did their job. And the offense still has their things. You're like, I don't know about it. But they did their job well enough. Jekwin and Jackson, he didn't have his best game. But he had 22 carries, 75 yards. Average, 3 and 1/2 yards a carry, but they still get two touchdowns. I think Auburn did a good job, which we knew going into it that they were a good team against the run. So they did a good job at keeping him in check. But Jalen Greene was the leading rusher. We had 18 carries for 80 yards in this one. So really didn't have a whole lot of answers for him. Got to see a lot of Braylon Russell. He had nine carries in this game for 22 yards. And Ronnie L3 carries for 14 yards. So got to see him a little bit. But there's no doubt that the disappointing thing still remains to be Jalen Greene. I mean, Jalen Greene's accuracy is still not great. He went 12 to 27 in this game. Not for 151 yards that have a touchdown throw, but also had two interceptions. So you're talking about a 44% completion percentage, two picks. And if he had 151 passing yards, which 58 of those yards came on one throw. So he continues to struggle with his accuracy. And that's part of it. I mean, that's just what you got to deal with, I guess. 'Cause it's annoying, it's frustrating. And I know you got to fix it. But again, he's such a weapon with his legs. If he could just figure out that way of becoming more accurate and being more consistent there, it would be great. And again, we'll save that. 'Cause it's about strengths and problems that we'll talk about in the next segment. But just some crazy, crazy moments in this one. I mean, it seemed like it was a pickfest going back and forth before halftime. You had the amount of turnovers, the fact that I felt like the officiating, there's still some bad officiating moments. No, it's never perfect. But I feel like the officiating actually maybe went towards Arkansas. The only play that I did not believe that was when they blatantly, I mean, blatantly missed the running into the kicker, roughing the kicker, whatever you want to call it, and the Devin Bale, which it was fourth and four. So that could have, Arkansas ended up getting an interception, so it ended up not hurting him too much. But that was, that could have been a huge play. And that was the only call that I remember going against Arkansas or should have gone Arkansas's way that didn't. But I fully expected Arkansas getting screwed against Auburn 'cause they usually do on the road. I felt like it was pretty fair on that end. But I'm happy for the team. I'm really happy for the team. I'm happy for Sam Pittman. 'Cause again, this was a team in Auburn that just destroyed you on your home field last season and made you pay for it. And it was embarrassing to them and to return the favor a little bit and get after Auburn and get that victory, you're one and only in the SEC. I don't care what anybody says. That's exactly the same amount of wins you had a year ago in the SEC play. Same exact amount. All the difference is is that that season's over and you went one and seven. This year, you still got seven games to go. Sure, they lose seven in a row. But I don't think they will. But you're better. You're better than what you were a year ago. You just gotta find ways to fix the problems, fix the issues. But yeah, again, shout out Niko Slaughter who got a great game too. He's got that I've been critical of and I know he struggled a little bit but he had a great game. Seven total tackles for him. Even had a sack in this game. Him and Niko Davier were the only two players to have a sack. So that was big. And so we had the defense, man. The defense was really the story for Arkansas. Special teams, you know, you got Ramsey missed a 41 yarder but then he came back and made a 43 yard or so. I guess it's just the way it's gonna be, man. I guess it's just the way it's gonna have to be with Ramsey as the kicker where he'll make half of them. You know, like he'll go out there and he'll make you a 50 yarder but it'll be one that he also misses too. So, but again, I'm happy. I'm happy for the team. I'm happy for Sam Pittman. I'm happy for the fans, you, the fans. I got to enjoy it too. You know, people thought I was a little bit negative and maybe I wasn't overly negative. I still stand by what everything I said. It's just again, in the moment, it's great but in the long term, in the long game, is it still okay? Well, that's what we're gonna talk about here in a bit. The strengths and the weaknesses of this team as we are officially a third through it, that's amazing. But we'll talk about that in a lot more on the other side of the break. It's FanDuel.com. All right, so moving on into the next segment of the "Locked on Razorbacks" podcast. The good and the bad, really, the strengths and the problems. We got to turn the page and we'll do that in a little bit and kind of look ahead and look at the state of the SEC and everything, but again, if you watch that game between Arkansas and Auburn, there's problems. Like Arkansas's offense still has issues. Tailon Green still has accuracy issues. There's through some, those picks that he had were not good throws. Not good throws at all. They have an issue with that. They have an issue with, they got to have some other wide receiver or some other target besides Andrew Armstrong. Andrew Armstrong is phenomenal. The dude got wrecked in a hit and he came back and still had a nice game. So he got targeted 10 times in this game, all right? 10 times where there was 25 total targets. So you're almost half of the targets went towards Andrew Armstrong. And I get it, he's your best wide receiver. He needs to be targeted more, but you got it. Oh, you got some other dudes that can play. Satania, we saw that, but you know, find ways. Luke has, it's just so crazy to me. And maybe we just need to get to the point to where he's just not going to be a crucial part of this offense, like we were expecting. He was targeted twice, had one catch for three yards. That's all he's done. It's incredible. And so, you know, he's there. And then you're talking about, Braylon Russell had a catch of running back. Rodney Hill had a catch, he was a running back, of course. And even Ty Washington got a catch. And this one is tied in. But that was it. That was it. The only wide receivers that got any sort of receptions in this game was Andrew Armstrong and Isaiah Satania. That's it. All the other ones were tied in's were running backs. And it's fine if it works, but still it's just, it's frustrating. You know, you have some dudes like Ty Brod and I'll admit, Ty Brod and his, he's been struggling this year. He's had a lot of drops. And that's a problem. So it's hard for quarterback to trust somebody like that. But they've got to find ways to get to other people involved in the passing game. And a lot of that, of course, is gonna hinge on the accuracy of Taylor and Green. Taylor and Green has to be more accurate. He has to be better than what we've seen so far. And I think he knows that. Luckily, he's able to make up for a lot of those issues with his legs 'cause a dude just runs all over the field and can really make you pay, which is so exciting and so much fun to watch at times. You know, he's got to even instead of doing those karate kicks that he did in the dude just jacking him in the face. That was pretty funny. But, you know, that's the issue. So, 'cause people are, what people are going to do, and this is exactly what Texas A&M's gonna do. This is what, any team that Arkansas's gonna be facing is gonna do, they are going to just force Arkansas to run the ball. I'm sorry, force them to pass the ball because they're gonna be locking in and be, "All right, hey, just shut up, Jekwin and Jackson. Keep a spy on Taelyn Green and force him to throw." 'Cause when you force him to throw, that's how you get plays to come in your way. That's how you get third down situations. That's how you get turnovers. Find a way to do that. And that's a problem. That's a major problem. You don't want to be one-dimensional. You don't want to force yourself to be dimensional. One-dimensional. So, you got to find a way to get some crispiness, you know? I don't even know if that's, I keep using that, the term. But yeah, get some crispiness here for your offense that's not just like, "Hey, go in the back, you know, drop back, look around a couple times. No one's there to take off running." 'Cause again, it'll work on occasion, but it's not gonna be able to sustain that success for the long term. So, that's the biggest problem right now is the passing game. The passing game in the offense and the ability to, you know, go out there and, you know, do the things that you're supposed to do that the probably between offense is supposed to linger towards. So, to me, that's the biggest problem. Now, let's talk about the biggest strength here. All right, let's do the positives here. I should probably just start at the opposite direction, but it's fine. Start by the strings. Folks, this defense is really good. I'm not gonna sit here and pretend that this defense is number one in the SEC or top three in the SEC or anything like that. They still have issues. But the defense is doing enough to win games. The defense did a good job against UAB in general to keep them in the game, 'cause that's all it's about, keeping you in the game. Arkansas held an SEC opponent in their place to 14 points. We could go through the stats. We could go through the passing yardage and the numbers and blah, blah, blah. We could do all of that. But at the end of the day, it does not matter because again, you held them to 14 points. Auburn had 430 total yards. And if you see that, oh man, that's a lot. It's like, yeah, but you held them to 14 points. You were able to cause turnovers and I don't care how many, how much yard you give up if you're keeping them out of the end zone. Arkansas did that. The defense is doing a good enough job. They're not perfect. They're gonna have big plays, but they're doing a good enough job. Also, Arkansas's third down offense, I mean, it took a little bit of a hit 'cause it was 65% conversion right now. This past week, it was nine out of 19. But still, that's a great thing that Arkansas was so bad in. And we know how frustrating it can be when you're in these third down situations and you can't convert. Arkansas has an ability. It's kind of funny and ironic. Arkansas now has the ability to do the teams. What teams were doing to Arkansas that was always so frustrating where you get a team on third and nine and you got great coverage in the back, but then the quarterback takes off run and then he ends up getting it. That's what you have with a guy like Taelyn Green is you have a guy that drops back and teams are gonna play a good coverage and they're probably not gonna be trusting, but then if he takes off running, I mean, the guy has such tremendous strides. He can get a first down pretty easily. So, but yeah, they're doing a good job still on third downs. Honestly, penalties too, knock on wood. Penalties, they've been really good at. I mean, in this game, they only have four penalties for 20 yards. So, every one of their penalties were just five yard penalties. That's really good. That's that part of it's mistake free or it's not mistake free, but you're doing a good job of not causing those mistakes and everything too. So, that's a deal. But again, they have some good things going for him right now. They just gotta, they gotta, they gotta fix the offense, the accuracy. And there's another couple of things too that I wanna throw into far is fixing. The snaps, ass and nickels, there's been times where the snaps have been problematic. Gotta shore that up, gotta get that cleaned up. Still not getting a ton of pressure on the quarterback like you should. Only had two sacks in this game, only four tackles for loss. But again, you'll take them when you can. But yeah, it's just the little tweaks. Little tweaks here and there. I'm gonna be able to get it going. But I still like where August all is at. I still like the direction they're going. And as far as winning and all that. But they have the toughest sledge of their, the toughest part of their schedule, gonna be coming up here really soon. So we'll see how they hang out and do that. But we'll talk about that. Do a preview and look at the SEC here in just a little bit. So stay with us here on the Lockdown Raise Your Backs podcast. All right, folks, we know that you're always about buying those tickets 'cause you wanna go to all the great games and the great concerts and the great events and everything, right? Well, no further than the game time app, right? Because the game time app is what you need to make sure that you are going to the games and going to these events for the best price, with the best seats, the best deals. And you're gonna get it. One of my favorite things about game time is the setting that you can toggle to where you can see the entire total upfront. None of these hidden fees when you go through all these steps. There's nothing worse than when you buy a ticket. You're like, "Oh, 20 bucks, that's great." And then at the end of it, it's like, "Oh, it's $86." Right. What the crap happened? Well, don't have to worry about that when you have that feature you can turn on with game time picks. You also get the great seat views where you can see exactly where your seat's going to be. And you get the lowest price guarantee or game time will credit you 110% difference. It's that simple. So take the guesswork out of buying tickets with game time. Don't the game time app, create an account and use code locked on college for $20 off your first purchase. Terms apply. Again, create an account and redeem code L-O-C-K-E-D-O-N-C-O-L-L-E-G-E for $20 off. Don't let game time today. What time is it? It's game time. All right, so final segment here on the locked on Razorback's podcast. So we're going a little bit around the SEC and looking at the head to Arkansas's opponent against Texas A&M. Texas A&M is ironically in some for some reason ranked. I don't know why they're ranked, but they are. They're three in one, similar to Arkansas. Their wins came against McNeese, Florida on the road and Bowling Green, which Florida, the force teams in the SEC right now by far, are Florida, Mississippi State, and all of them. Those are the worst teams in the SEC. Kentucky's not great, but I think they'll be okay, but still, yeah, those are the worst teams. So kind of similar situations for Arkansas A&M. Lost a game that maybe you felt like you could have played better in against the quality opponent and still have a lot to prove. So this one's going to be a big one between these two opponents and it always is. It's a final game in Arlington. Thank goodness for the Texas A&M side of things, at least with the Southwest Classic. It's the final one. I know we'll talk more about it as we get closer to it, but that's kind of what we're looking at. And here's the thing about A&M. They beat Bowling Green by six this past weekend. 26 to 20. It's a winnable game. Not saying Arkansas is going to win it. Because we know better than that, just to throw guarantees around, but Arkansas is good enough to win this game. And man, oh man, could you imagine how much fun that will be? But great, great thing there. And you got a few of the other teams. So just looking at the teams that Arkansas is going to end up playing this year in the SEC and how they looked. Texas blew out you, I mean, come on. Like what are we doing here? It's like Texas, at what point in time are they going to get challenged? Because Michigan sucks. Of course, they beat USC. So I think everybody sucks. And Texas has to face Mississippi State this weekend for Mississippi State. So they're just going to keep rolling everybody and be fine with it. Now, Tennessee, the team that Arkansas faces next Saturday in Fayetteville, they played Oklahoma down there in Norman. And which was a big thing for Josh Heipel, all of that. They won 25-15. Like it was a hard fought battle. And I honestly thought that Tennessee would blow them out, but Oklahoma made a little bit of a run there. In fact, Oklahoma scored all 12 of their 15 points there in the fourth quarter. But Tennessee's really good. And I am not going to predict Arkansas to win that one. So that one's going to be tough. You mentioned LSU. They played a UCLA and struggled a little bit, but pulled away a very winnable game. I saw Harold Perkins is out for the season. I hate that for him, but that's big for LSU's defense and what they're trying to prove. Florida kicked the crap out of Mississippi State in Starkville. Again, Mississippi State's the worst team in the SEC right now. Because Florida is also trash and they smoked them. So not a good deal there. But so you got that and then Ole Miss blew out Georgia Southern is what it is. And then Missouri and Vanderbilt went to overtime. Man, Missouri was this close to Louisiana. It would have been hilarious if they lost a Vanderbilt at home. I mean, because again, Missouri's got the easiest schedule that's ever been created in the SEC. But Vanderbilt's-- Vanderbilt, they're going to get people some fits now. They're going to do some stuff. But Missouri was barely able to get by with that one thanks to the Vanderbilt kicker missing the overtime field goal. So point is, is where it stands right now for Arkansas in the standings and kind of where they're at in the SEC. I think Arkansas is in that one tier. Because right now, again, I mentioned who the worst teams. You got Mississippi State, Auburn, Florida. I think are all the bottom dwellers here in this conference. You could even throw in. I guess we'll throw in Kentucky. Because Kentucky has lost to Georgia and South Carolina. But yeah, they're still-- 0 and 2 is 0 and 2. So they're flirting with it a little bit. I still think Vanderbilt's great, but they are better. They're improved than what they have been before. So we'll see. But either way, I think the top tier teams, you got Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Alabama, Texas. Like those teams are the top of the top. Most teams are all probably playoff-contending type teams in the SEC right now. And then after that, you got Missouri. That's pretty good. Again, it's hard to gauge how good they are. But they're pretty good. You got them there in the mix. LSU is still going to be up there a bit. Oklahoma, I think, is still kind of in that next tier there, too, after that. And then you have that tier where it's kind of like-- a lot of people don't know what these teams are. Arkansas is definitely in that one. A&M is in that one. I want to say that South Carolina, you could even throw them into that one, where people just don't know when no one knows what these teams are. LSU is that team. I don't know how good LSU is. I don't think they're very good. But at the same time, they find ways to win. But either way, it's a point is Arkansas is in a good spot. Arkansas is in a good spot in the SEC. There's teams out there that they're not going to be better than. They're not going to be better in Tennessee or Texas or Ole Miss. But could they-- I see-- I mean, they're going to be Mississippi State. I feel good about that one. I feel good about them beating Mississippi State. I feel good about them beating LSU as crazy as it is. And I'm not guaranteeing it, but I feel good about it. You throw in that. Throw in-- what do they do against Texas A&M this weekend is another one. Arkansas could win four SEC games. I know it's crazy. They could. Could. If they beat Texas A&M this weekend, I think they'll absolutely win four SEC games, which would be great. I mean, it'd be a great year for all things considered. And we'll see how it plays out this weekend. But either way, SEC's drunk, whole country's drunk. Nobody knows who's good and who's not. But that's what makes it fun, right? So it makes it fun.
