It's the Lockdown podcast network, your team every day. Well, raise your back fans. It seems like that's after Sam Piment with the media on Monday, he talked about the plays that could have gone other ways. Why didn't they? And how can he fix that? Let's talk about today's Lockdown Raise Your Bex podcast. You are locked on Razorbacks, your daily podcast on the Arkansas Razorbacks, part of the Lockdown podcast network, your team every day. And welcome in to Lockdown Raise Your Bex podcast. I am your host, John Neighbors. I'm also the host of Inside Arkansas Live, which you can catch every weekday at noon on Inside Arkansas and inside Arkansas dot com. Today's episode is brought to you by five hour energy. Go to fivehourenergy.com and use promo code locked on CFB to receive 20% off your next order. Hope everybody is having a wonderful Tuesday as we're turning the page a little bit to the next game for Arkansas football, taking on UAB. And we'll talk about that as the week goes on. I promise we will because some people are kind of over it when it comes to the Oklahoma state game and you do have to turn the page. But Sam Pittman met with the media yesterday and, you know, a lot of the times, just kind of depending on what's going on and what the current state is, those Monday press conferences can be about turning the page. And I'm sure Sam Pittman would have rather have talked about that part of just turning the page and getting it going and not worrying about the Oklahoma state game. And honestly, I know that it's something you have to do because you can't change it. But there were some things that came out of that press conference that really I'm going to play some clips from it and talk about it. And you know, three major things at least dealing with some interesting factoids or some opinions on the matter or at least some questions that Sam Pittman may have asked or have raised that may have been pretty fascinating. So either way, some of these clips are a little bit lengthy, but I think it's really important to have it in the context of what we are going to be discussing. And the first one has to do with the plays that can go different ways. Now, if you listened to my rant yesterday on the podcast, you'll know that, you know, I said, hey, if you just not make this mistake, not make this mistake, just not make one of those mistakes, those major mistakes that you made, you win the game. It's as simple as that. So there's definitely plenty of place to choose from that could have gone a different direction. Well, Sam Pittman was asked about those plays going in those different directions and had a pretty interesting comment coming from it. Take a listen. I think, I think, you know, there's some things we certainly learn or we're going to learn from the game. You know, there were some crucial plays. Now, we had a couple of MAs on empty protection and we had a guy wide open across the crossing route. Well, it was a tag name for the first one, I think, probably would have scored on. And then there on fourth down, fourth and five, we had a, you know, it's a sort. You get the two of the three on your side and a man slide scheme, empty and we sorted inside and nobody came and the end came free. So that there was a couple of things that we can clean up as coaches. We took two critical sacks there. We had three, but we took two critical ones in situations where we gave away points and made, certainly the overtime made the kick more difficult. Obviously, we've got to make our kicks. It wasn't anything. I don't think that we ask our kids there to do that we can't make and that we haven't made in practice. Defensively, the trick play, the flea flicker was the big one for them. I thought we did really good job of controlling their run game, but you're right. There was a few, the muff pond where, you know, cross get, you know, tripped up and he was too close to first time. The great thing about the tablets on the sideline is you can show them and the first time it happened and then, you know, he fell into Isaiah the next time. So we've got to certainly get that cleaned up. Family wise, we had six again, you know, probably the critical one was picking up the guy and slamming him to the ground, which would have been a third and nine and turned out to be a first down, no telling what would happen, you know, you can always speculate what would have happened, but certainly don't want to do that. So there were some key plays there, the toss play, you know, we respect Oklahoma State, they really didn't stop us a whole lot. We kind of stopped ourselves and, and I think they've got a really good team, but we inflicted our own wounds with, you know, with three turnovers and, and there we got a turnover, but it was, no, I'm not going to say it was insignificant because it certainly was, it got us back to ball, but it was right there. They were thrown up, thrown it up right before the half, you know, so we left a lot of points out there. And so we've got to figure out how to finish drive. Now with that said, six hundred and thirty eight yards offense and all that, we just have to find a way to finish, finish drives and not have those critical, as you just stated problems. I think we've got a really good team. I love this team. I think they played extremely hard. We just made some mistakes that cost us a game. So there you have it from Sam Pittman of just talking about the simple mistakes that end up costing the game and kind of went into some details about as far as like what it looked like and why it maybe happened and some things that could have changed it. And you know, that's the thing about the, you know, the, the just sports in general, but really about this particular team and this particular game against Oklahoma State is that it is fixable and it is something that you can address and that's something you can move forward with and something that you can do to improve upon. But at the end of the day, you, you got to be able to make the small plays matter and the small plays go in your favor. It's not easier said than done, but it's at least recognizing that those are the types of plays you just can't have. And in a way, I found myself kind of feeling bad for Sam Pittman. Not in the right of, okay, cause everyone's, you know, critical critical of him as they had coached cause and I get it, totally get it. But it is pretty incredible how it's like, if there was something that could have gone wrong that could have impacted the team in a negative way, that was it. Like that was the way that it ended up being problematic. So the question becomes, okay, so how do you keep those things from happening? Well, depending on which play you're choosing from, some of it can be just a easy thing. Like, hey, don't muff the punt, but at the same time, you know, a player getting blocked into you and it, you know, it goes awry that way. Freak accident, freak play, same with the pick six is more of a freak play than anything. It was. So those are the things that are just coincidental and, you know, you could chalk it up to, you know, just the football gods not liking you or some of you may say, no, it's more than that. And that's fine. But to me, they're just freak coincidental plays that you can't do it. Not that you can't do anything about, but that it's just part of football. You know, like we see it sometimes happen towards Arkansas, which would happen in the positive side towards Arkansas a lot more than what it has here recently, but it still can be something that's chalked up to that. And then on the other end, you still have a lot of plays that aren't freak accidents and aren't coincidences that aren't just bad impact plays. Like the, uh, the suplexing of, uh, that save you on sorry did is, uh, they got the 15 yard penalty, which would have led things to being a third down and nine. That's something you can't help. It's something you can't fix. It's something you can prevent the missing of field goals. You're going to miss field goals, but still, if you're going to be a kicker in the SEC and kicker for an SEC program, you got to be able to make those field goals. Like those are the things that you can help. And so when you're talking about turning the page to UAB, I don't think, at least I'm hoping not, I don't think that we're going to continue to see some of the same type of things and plays that happen in this game. Like the, the coincidental stuff, the just bad luck, bad bounces. But what we better not see are the problems that weren't just chalked up to bad luck. They either are bad calls, bad plays, bad decisions, bad, everything, like, like you, you got to be able to overcome that. Fix it and overcome it. I'm not the head coach. So I don't know what the magic sauce is. Just sprinkle a little fairy dust on it and then boom, it's ready to go like it's not that simple. And I understand that and I get it. But if you were just able to prevent the most detrimental things from happening in the most untimely manners, that's what's going to help you. And to me, that's the biggest case of it. That's the biggest thing that you got to be able to overcome that there's no problems. I shouldn't say no problems. I got a word that's right because people are going to eat me up, eat me up alive. There's, there's time to overcome an interception, but there's not time to overcome an interception late in the game that ends up being a pick six. There's times that you can overcome a muffed punt, but there's not time to overcome it when you have a muffed punt late in the game with the game online. You can overcome a penalty on third down for suplexing a dude, but it's harder to overcome it when it's late in the game and it ends up being the difference of you having a possible stop getting the ball back or giving them another opportunity to move closer down the field. That's what they have to do. Not just focus on fixing the things that they can work on themselves, but also being able to overcome those problems and prevent them from happening late in the game. The untimelyness is unfortunate. I'm not defending. Like I'm still, like stuff, a right to be upset, but those are the big plays that make a difference and they made a difference in these games. And hopefully they don't continue to make a difference for Arkansas anytime any given point every time soon. All right. So folks, we're going to talk about some other things that Sam Pittman had to say is some interesting nuggets here in just a second. So stay with us here in the lockdown. Raise your recs podcast. All right, moving on into the next segment of the locked on raise your back's podcast. You know, Sam Pittman, again, had some interesting factoids that came out of this press conference. And this is one that I'm not trying to look at it in a negative way, but it was just interesting to me. He was asked a question about tail and green and the performance and what he's been doing at quarterback, which is numbers are really impressive, at least his yardage is had some issues with accuracy, but overall, he's been really good. Well, Sam Pittman was asked on what got him, but he kind of answered a different question in that that was really fascinating talking about being tested more before this game. Take a listen. So he he's playing his tail off. I think, you know, when we talked about it, especially offensively, when we're in there and Bobby said it probably the best and that, you know, those guys know about their team, you know, they they've got 18 guys that it's been back and he said, we're still learning about ours. You know, as we're as we're sitting there talking about it, I thought about it and makes a lot of sense. You know, you're you're asking, there's a lot of new guys as you're quinned in and just a lot, you know, or O line and and so we're learning a little bit about each one of them. But Taelyn, you know, I think I think going into that environment, I wish we had like one more game before we went and played Oklahoma State to be perfectly honest with you. The first one, we really didn't get tested at all, you know, and then if we had a little bit better team, maybe if we, you know, but I think we'd have learned a little bit more and maybe been able. But I think Taelyn, I think what you think about him, he's really a good player can make things happen that maybe not are there, throws the ball well. I think he also got tired and it might have showed on some of the some of the throws there later and and and trying to get away from pressure that he might have earlier thrown that ball away. But he's a fantastic player. I wasn't trading for anybody out there that somebody wants a trade. I'm not trading. So really good sentiments there from Sam Pim and talking about Taelyn Green, but you know, that aside, forget that it was about the being tested part that really stood out to me and was really fascinating. The fact is is that you had a team in UAP beat open up the season that wasn't even a competition. It might as well have been a glorified practice. And then against Oklahoma State, which is a good opponent on the road, you know, team that's a power five, maybe even a playoff contender, I guess, just because of its extended and, you know, see what they do in the big 12, but either way, it doesn't matter. Their program that's worth a lot of credit and that is really tough and highly competitive. So it does make you wonder, does he have a point to it? Sam Pim and that is about having a little bit more testing or at least another game before he got into Oklahoma State. You can't change anything about it. You got to play the games in front of you. No question. There's no excuses for it, but you know, I've always had this theory going back into college football, especially when I was growing up back in the, and even in looking in the 2000s and everything, more often than not, you had two, and in some cases, three straight warm up games, quote unquote, to start the season. Very seldom did you ever see a big time, high level matchup within weeks one and two. Cause I remember when Arkansas played USC in 2006 and week one, that was a huge surprise. Like that was not a common thing. Arkansas got smoked, but having two teams of that caliber to start the season and week one was pretty rare. I think back to, you know, the years of like Bobby Patrino in 2011, the first three games that Arkansas had was against nobody's and he kind of went into that process. I think in 2010, it may have been week three is when's the time you played George on the road for the child's please play, but you just never really had those games that were either tougher or how competitive, especially nowadays, it may be something that helps you more than anything because the teams are so new that are still coming together that have a lot of new faces and everything. Like having them all together was kind of a rarity and it always just makes me wonder of going back to that formula and going back to that format. How would that be? How would that look? How would that go? Well, I guess Sam Pittman kind of feels like it would have been positive and would have been a fit here this year, but I actually agree with them. Again, not making excuses, but I agree with them having those types of games, maybe a couple of those games before you go on the road to a tough opponent probably would be helpful. Like if you had UAPB, then UAB, then Oklahoma State, you know, that maybe gets everything a little bit better, a little bit more prepared and a little further down the road. But again, not making excuses, just making observations is all. We'll talk about the lack of pressure that Arkansas is actually getting. Well, not the coaching staff, but on the quarterback here in just a second. So stay with us here on the Lockdown Raise Your Ex podcast. All right, folks, we know that we're always tired, especially this time of year. That's five hour energy.com today. All right, so final segment here on the locked on razorbacks podcast, final quick here from Sam Piment talking about defensive lines, especially not being able to provide any sort of pressure on the quarterback and what could be some of the possible reasons behind that. Well, let's hear from Sam Piment himself. I think if you talk about the game and you're going, okay, we're, we're defensively, you know, where, where, where can we, we can get better everywhere, but you're going, you know, what happened? We didn't, we didn't get to it. Now part of that is they, they've got a good protecting offensive line, but we've got to be better than that. We, you know, the guy was pretty clean for the entire game. Now going into the game, we said that he gets rid of the ball extremely fast. So we said, hey, don't get frustrated if we can't, you know, if we don't, if we're not tagging him, if we're not sacking him, but he held the ball. We also said the first game that he held the ball a lot longer than what he ever did last year. So we thought, well, maybe we can get there because he's not throwing it so fast. That's one area and I've already addressed that with Deke and yesterday that we've got it. We've got to win one on ones up front and we did not on Saturday. I actually really liked this answer from Sam Pittman. It's honest, but it's also enlightening and he understands it. Again, I got to give, I'm giving Sam, Sam Pittman a lot of credit here. He understands the problem. He's got to fix it and until he fixes it, it's still going to remain a problem, but he at least identifies it. And I have always felt like, and this is probably going to sound cliche to a lot of you, but I've always felt like when the defenses are at their best, whether it's at Arkansas or anywhere, it's always going to be when you have pressure up front, like when you have guys that are able to get after the quarterback, because you're going to face off against a lot of good quarterbacks in this league. And as good as some quarterbacks are, it's still college football, still young immature players that when that pressure is on, a lot of them don't make the best decisions. A lot of them don't handle things well, but you'll never know that unless you try them. You try them, see how they see how they react, see how they interact, see like people to understand, and it's not saying like, I'm some authority on quarterback play, but people don't understand that, you know, playing the position where you're getting out there, and as soon as you snap the ball, you have an idea of what's going on. But you have seconds, very few seconds, two, three seconds to make a decision. And if suddenly that three second window gets shortened to one and a half seconds, gets split in half, because you got a linebacker, you got a D lineman that blew by his guy, and suddenly you got to make a quicker decision. That's when the mistakes happen. There is not a bigger disruptor, not a bigger deal, not a bigger benefit to having a great defense than having pressure upfront. Arkansas has not had it. They need to have it. I think they're capable of having it. And it's Sam Pittman does understand it. So I want to see more of that. I want to see against UAB, even against Auburn, like just finding ways to get pressure on the quarterback, even if you send seven dudes. I don't care. I would rather have a quarterback have to make a quick decision with only four players out in the coverage than have four guys rushing and the quarterback just sits back there for seven to eight seconds just waiting. That's not going to be good for anybody. No one is going to win that way. So they got to get that fixed. They got to get that measured out. They got to make it work. They got a lot of things to work on, but it was at least an interesting press conference from Sam Pittman overall to kind of figure out and think about what they have going on. So we'll see how it all plays out, but either way, appreciate all of you listening in and watching into the lockdown. Raise your ex podcast.
