Young Israel of Westside Shiurim

Shabbos 65

דף סה לע״נ הענטשע בת שמואל

  1. When there a prohibition of מראית עין, there’s a dispute if the rabbis forbid it even in secrecy or only in front of people. Example is spreading out wet clothes on Shabbos where ppl can’t see, but if they did, they may think he’s wrongly done laundry on Shabbos.

  2. Wad in ear for dripping wax is ok only if it’s tied to the ear. R Yochanan was lenient if it’s inserted tightly. Wad to catch blood is ok even ifs not tied bc it’s gross so no one will come to carry it even if it falls out.

  3. False silver tooth is surely fine. A golden one the rabbis don’t let bc one may remove it to show it off, but r Meir is lenient bc it is embarrassing to take out a fake tooth.

  4. Silver coins with images were put on wounds for medicinal reasons and one may go out with these on Shabbos.

  5. When young girls had their ears pierced they’d have strands in their ears to make sure the holes didn’t close. They can go out with these on Shabbos but shmuels father wouldn’t allow his daughters to go out with colored ones.

  6. Shmuels father wouldn’t let his daughters sleep right next to each other. Either bc it may lead to more desire for men or bc it may lead to forbidden act of women מסוללים.

  7. There two possibilities for immersion. Either a מעיין- natural flowing water which can purify even if the waters move. Or a מקוה- rainwater that must be still. If one immerses in a river, they must be sure that its not a majority of rainwater bc then it wouldn’t be effective since the waters are not still. There’s a dispute in the gemara if after rainy season we must be concerned that the Euphrates River is filled with majority of rainwater.

  8. Certain cloaks worn by Median woman had fasteners on them. One can put these on and wear them on Shabbos. But one can’t use a coin as a fastener bc coins are muktzeh.

  9. The Gemara has a question if one may do הערמה to get a nut to a child in the street. Instead of carrying the nut in the street, a mother could use the nut as the fastener on her cloak and bring it that way. Maybe these “tricks” are forbidden, or Maybe they’re allowed bc this is anyway not a normal way of carrying.
