Young Israel of Westside Shiurim

Shabbos 64

  1. woven threads can accept tumah even in minimal amounts if they’re made specifically that way. Goats hair, even if it’s just twisted together and not technically “woven,” it’s considered woven and accepts tumah. The example would be a poor person taking a few strands of goats hair and twisting them as a necklace for his daughter.

  2. Woven strands of goats hair accept tumah not only if they’re made for people clothes, like sackcloth, but even if they’re made as straps for animals to bind their harness. However, non woven goat hairs, like measuring strings, do not accept tumah.

  3. We include items made even from the tails of horses and cows to accept tumah.

  4. All these laws are true both for the tumah from sheretz and tumah from dead body. Even though these tumos are different in size and duration, there is a גזירה שוה that links the two.

  5. After the war with Midyan, the Jews brought a donation from the spoils of war to atone for improper thoughts they had with the girls of midyan. These included special metal lingerie as well as ordinary jewelry.

  6. A woman may go out with other strands of hair tied in her hair- her own, her friends, or even an animals. However, a young girl cannot go out with older woman’s hair and nice versa bc they will be rediculed and it will lead to carrying.

  7. Our mishna holds that any jewelry that’s forbidden to wear in the street may not be worn in the courtyard either. However, the rabbis were lenient with woolen cap and a wig bc a woman should remain attractive to her husband. This is compared to a leniency r akiva introduced for a nidda to adorn herself to remain attractive.

  8. A woman may go out with item in her mouth that help her breath or help pain with a tooth. She shouldn’t put them in on Shabbos so people don’t suspect her of carrying.

  9. A gold tooth is a dispute between r Meir and Rabanan if it may be worn.
