Young Israel of Westside Shiurim

Shabbos 63

  1. One s should not go to the street wearing armor and weapons. It is biblical carrying bc weapons are not ornaments or clothing. R Eliezer allows it bc he holds weapons adorn the person.

  2. The dispute is based on the Neviims words that there will be no weapons of war in the future. Rabanan say this indicates weapons are not good things while r Eliezer says they only become unattractive once they are unnecessary. In a different version, r Eliezer suggests that the neviims words are not a reference to the times of Moshiach but rather to Olam Habba. When Moshisch comes, life will continue regularly and there will be weapons.

  3. A proof to r Eliezer is the pasuk in tehillim that says “your sword will be girded on your loins,” but one can counter the pasuk is only metaphoric for Torah. However, the Gemara notes that even if so, a pasuk cannot be completely removed form it’s simple pshat.

  4. There is tremendous value in 2 Torah Scholars studying together. The Gemara discusses 4 scenarios- of the two sharpening one another, speaking nicely to each other, listening to each other, and gathering each other when their Rebbe is unavailable. All of these cases merit great blessings.

  5. שומר מצוה לא ידע דבר רע is a verse from Koheles interpreted that someone who performs a mitzvah correctly has even the power to nullify Gods decrees against him.

  6. It’s bad to raise wild dogs- they turn away kindness and there’s a story of a woman miscarrying from one.

  7. A garter holding up stockings is not a כלי bc it doesn’t directly serve rhe person. There’s a type with a chain connected that is a כלי and susceptible to tumah. The reason is that the chain prevents someone from taking large steps which is a function so that girls don’t lose בתולים.

  8. We derive from the Tzitz that an ornament of any size can be a כלי. The Tzitz was size of 2 fingers breath wide. It had קודש לה written on it. There a dispute if Hashem’s name was written on the top line out of respect or in the same line as קודש.

  9. Even think we’ve learned about minimum dimensions for a cloth to accept tumah, a small woven cloth made intentionally to be a small garment does accept tumah.
