Young Israel of Westside Shiurim

Shabbos 61

  1. A person shouldn’t wear a single shoe in the street. (Ppl May redicule him and he’ll remove the shoe and carry it) If he has a wound and that’s why he’s wearing one shoe it’s permitted. There are two ways to understand this. A. He ordinarily wouldn’t wear shoes but he doesn’t want the wound to be in pain by striking things he steps on so he wears jsut one shoe on the foot with the wound. Ppl understand that and won’t make fun of him and so it’s ok. B- he ordinarily would wear both shoes but he doesn’t want his shoe to irritate the wound so he doesn’t wear a shoe on the foot with the wound. People see the wound on the foot without the shoe and don’t make fun of him.

  2. When one puts on shoes, r Yochanan advises putting on the left first bc left is significant by wearing Tefillin. The braisa says to put on right shoe first. The gemara says certain amoraim would practically do either way while some would put on right first and tie the left first.

  3. One is not biblically carrying by wearing Tefillin in street on Shabbos. Tefillin are considered a garment bc they are typically worn. However, the rabbis say it’s forbidden to wear Tefillin in the street bc one need to remove them when going to the bathroom and this will lead to carrying. These points are true whether or not there is an obligation to wear Tefillin on Shabbos.

  4. An amulet proven effective may be worn on Shabbos (it protects the body) for any level of sickness. It may even be worn to protect against future illness. It should be worn though and not carried in ones hand. It shouldn’t be attached to jewelry so it doesn’t look like it’s being worn as jewelry which it’s not. It may either written names of Hashem or pesukim or jsut roots of some herbs.

  5. One can wear an amulet proven to work or an amulet written by an expert writer of amulets even if this particular amulet has not been proven.

  6. In order for a writer of amulets to prove he writes legitimate amulets, he must be able to cure 3 different people with his amulets. Otherwise, we may say this particular person he cured had good מזל. If he cures 3 people with the same amulet, this amulet is certainly effective but the writer hasn’t proven he’s an expert for another amulet unless he writes 3 dif types.

  7. Amulets that have Hashems name have limited amount of kedusha. They certainly require גניזה and should not discarded regularly. They do not merit to be saved from a fire on Shabbos (where the rabbis only allow preserving essential כתבי הקדש). The gemara is unsure whether one can enter a bathroom with an uncovered amulet.
