Young Israel of Westside Shiurim

Shabbos 60

  1. A ring with a signet can be considered a תכשיט for a man and yet for a woman it would be a משוי. For a woman, she would be carrying the signet while the signet would be batel to the mans body.

  2. Sometimes women use needles to hold stray hairs. Those needles a woman could go out with Shabbos bc she wouldn’t remove, just like she can go out with a garter to hold her stockings. Other type of eye-less needles are more like jewelry and those are forbidden to wear on Shabbos bc she may remove them.

  3. It is forbidden to wear the wooden sandal with nails on the bottom. The source of this was a tragic incident when these sandals were a cause for Jews to die. There’s dif versions of the exact story, but the main point is the Jews heard noises/were concerned the Enemey was comign to attack them and in their own panic, they stampeded each other and many died. Since this story happened on Shabbos, the rabanan said not wear this sandal on Shabbos (and yom Tom which resembles Shabbos)

  4. The rabanan only outlawed the sandals like the ones in the story that have many nails to strengthen the stitching. If there’s jsut some few nails for decorative reasons, the sandal is permitted. (Dispute is this means 5,7, 13 or maybe even 22, or 24!)

  5. If the nails are not attached regularly, it is permitted. If one made it more like a shoe, it is also permitted. If the entire bottom is loaded with nails it is permitted. The only sandals forbidden are those that were used in the story.

  6. It is forbidden to wear the sandal even inside the home. There’s a Machlokes if one can carry the sandal around in the house bc he may come to wear it, but the gemara rules leniently.
