Shabbos 57

  1. A woman may not go out with strands of wool and linen in her hair on Shabbos. The reason is that these things are a chatzitzah for the mikveh, and we’re concerned for a woman who had to go to the mikveh on Shabbos. She would take off the strands before immersing and afterwards she may carry them outside in the street. This is only a concern for strands that are very tight. Other strands of hair are not as tight and are not a chatzizta, and woven thicker strands are also not a problem bc they do not get so tight. If, however, the strands were dirty and one would one to remove them before bathing, it may be problematic even though they are loose.

  2. Strands of wool/linen on the neck have different status. Sometimes they are placed to hold clothing and are loose so the woman does not feel strangle herself. Those are not a chatzitzah and may be worn on Shabbos. But the ones worn as part of an ornate “bib” were tied very tight (so the woman would appear plump) are a chatzitzah and cannot be worn on Shabbos.

  3. Strands of wool/linen stuck into the holes of pierced ears are fine to go out with on Shabbos bc they are not removed.

  4. A person can go out with an effective amulet on Shabbos.

  5. A woman cannot go out with any jewelry that she may be tempted to take off and show her friend. We are scared she may come to carry it. This includes rings and pins, bracelets etc.

  6. Any hat is fine bc a woman would not uncover her hair. Anything ornaments tied to the hat are fine, but untied ornaments are a problem.

  7. Caps under a head covering is a dispute if the woman may come to take them off or not.
