Young Israel of Westside Shiurim

Shabbos 54

  1. Female sheep can go out with their tales tied down so males don’t mate with them.

  2. When lambs are born, their fleece is licked perfectly white by the mother. The owners would cover the fleece with some leather to preserve the pristine whiteness. The animal can go out with this leather covering on Shabbos

  3. Animals can’t go out with certain protective items that may fall off in the street. Bc they’re expensive, the owner might come to carry them if they fall off in the street. Examples are cushion By the camels tail that is only tied to its tail, the “ladder” on the donkeys neck that protects it from scratching, straps on donkeys feet, straps on chickens legs, the little wagon under the tail of a ram, or the pieces of special wood stuck in the nose of female sheep to cause sneezing so the worms in their heads will fall off.

  4. It’s forbidden to move animals in street giving impression that they’re being taken to the market for selling. Examples are tying bunch of camels to each other and leading one or Taking a cow with a bell.

  5. Animals can’t be walking in the street with their legs bound, either front left with back leg, or leg itself bent. Since the animal finds this painful, it by definition is considered carrying a burden

  6. When pulling animal by leash, the end of the leash should not extend more than tefach down, and also, the leash should not drag by the ground.

  7. Animals cannot go out with identifying cords (to make sure chickens for example don’t get mixed up)

  8. Holding multiple leashes in one hand, some of wool and some of linen, is not an issue of kilyayim Unless they are tied together around the hand.
