Young Israel of Westside Shiurim

Shabbos 45

  1. It is forbidden to climb or use trees on Shabbos/Yom tov (lest one come to cut off a branch) The rabbis even forbid placing lamps on trees for Yom tov bc one may come to ascend the tree to go move the lamp at some point on Yom tov, but on Shabbos, if the Halacha is like r Yehuda that a lit lamp Remains muktzeh for the whole Shabbos, it is ok to keep it on a tree for Shabbos bc there’s no concern it will be moved.

  2. According to r shimon any Suitable item is not muktzeh on Shabbos, even if it’s not designated for usage. (Like an item in storage) Moreover, even if someone plants wheat and pushes it away from bring used, the wheat remains non muktzeh as long as it is usable.

  3. There’s a different form of muktzeh that even r Shimon agrees to called הוקצה למצותו- set aside for a mitzvah. R shining concedes that oil that drips out of the lamp on Shabbos while the lamp is still brining is muktzeh. Similarly, parts of a succah or even its decorations are muktzeh for the duration of succos.

  4. R shimon concedes that if someone placed dried figs and raisins go dry on the roof that they are muktzeh. This is bc in addition to pushing them away, these fruits become barely edible until they fully dry. Other fruits that were set out to dry Would not be muktzeh like r shimon

  5. On Yom tov when it’s muttar to slaughter for food, there may be muktzeh concern to take an animal that usually grazes away for civilizations for long extended periods of time. This is certainly according to r Yehuda, and perhaps even acc to r Shimon.

  6. A new egg is not muktzeh acc to r Shimon if it’s born on Shabbos. An egg with a undeveloped chick is certainly muktzeh.

  7. There is a big dispute in the Amoraim how to rule between r Yehuda and r shimon

  8. R shimon only holds a small lamp is not muktzeh but a big candelabra is muktzeh bc it’s usually left in place.
