Young Israel of Westside Shiurim

Shabbos 31

  1. Hillel was more patient and humble than Shammai. It happened with 3 stories of potential converts, one who only believed in written Torah, one who wanted to learn Torah on one foot, and one one who wanted to be a Kohen gadol- Shammai pushed them away and Hillel converted then with great patience.

  2. There were 2 people who made a bet if one of them could anger Hillel. One tried angering him By asking annoying questions on Friday afternooon and Hillel refuses to get upset.

  3. The pesukim in Koheles emphasize the importance of fear of Heaven. Even with lots of Torah study, one really needs fear of Heaven to preserve the Torah. Otherwise, the Torah can spoil.

  4. Pasuk in Koheles says don’t be too wicked means even if one sins, they shouldn’t continue to sin

  5. Wicked know they will die but they are too addicted to pleasure to stop their sins

  6. R Yosi said if one put out candle to save lamp or oil they’re exempt. But to save the wick they are liable. There are two explanations for the dif R Yosi holds מלאכה שאינה צריכה לגופה חייב, but destructive acts are liable on Shabbos only if the intent is to build something constructive in their spot. סותר על מנת לבנות במקומו . So putting out wick to save lamp or oil is exempt but wick is obligated. Or, alternatively, r Yosi holds מלאכה שאינה צריכה לגופה פטור, but if they need the wick to get charred so it will light better next time that’s called צריכה לגופה.

  7. 3 sins women are punished by childbirth- nidda, challah and lighting candles. Childbirth is vulnerable time and laxity in these areas is punishable at that time
