Young Israel of Westside Shiurim

Shabbos 19

  1. According to Beis Shammai, one has to make sure his chametz is destroyed before Pesach. So it’s not enough to sell it to a non Jew unless we’re confident he’ll consume it before pesach. But beis Hillel says it’s fine if one removes it from his possession.

  2. We are not allowed to feed animals on Shabbos unless they are our own, with the exception of dogs. Similarly, we can feed indigent non Jews ok Shabbos.

  3. According to Beis Shammai, one cannot give clothes to a non Jewish launderer on Friday or a letter to a non Jewish postman on Friday unless the work can get done before Shabbos. Beis Hillel allows it if one was קצץ- they establish a set price for the job as opposed to the non Jew being paid for the time he works. If one was not קצץ- then beis Hillel still allows it if there’s enough time for the non Jew to reach the inside of the city if the mayor residents (the recipient of the letter) is fixed in the city.

  4. One cannot set out on a trip with a boat within 3 days of Shabbos, unless it’s for a mitzvah need. We should not slay siege around a city within 3 days of Shabbos.

  5. It takes longer to wash white clothing than colored clothing.

  6. There is a melacha called דש/מפרק. Not to extract foods from within their cases. This can be like squeezing juice out of grapes. If the grapes were already cut open, there is a dispute if it would be biblical melacha to squeeze out more juice or we say the “beverage” is already out by itself. Similarly, one cannot squeeze honey out of a comb on Shabbos. But if the honeycomb was already cut open, it is a dispute if one can squeeze more honey out.

  7. There’s a dispute regarding muktzeh between R Shimon and r yehuda. Muktzeh certainly applies to items that are designated for use, such as stones or sticks. But what about items that are designated for use, but not for use on Shabbos? Examples would be mats used to cover ships cargo, a goat for its milk, or dates intended to be sold. R Shimon allows these items to be moved while r yehuda prohibits it. It is a dispute between rav and shmuel how we rule.
