Young Israel of Westside Shiurim

Shabbos 11

  1. The rooftops in the city that people use should not be higher than the roof of the Shul.

  2. The thoughts and considerations of the government are very deep.

  3. It is good to fast the day one sees a bad dream, and even if that day is Shabbos.

  4. In the middle of learning Torah, regular people need to stop for Shema and for davening times. But special ppl like R Shimon only stop for Shema and not for davening bc torah is their full life. At special extenuating circumstances, like when Rabbis convene to establish the leap year, they don’t have to interrupt even to say Shema.

  5. Tailor shouldn’t go out close to Shabbos with his needle bc he may forget and carry it out on Shabbos. Same with a scribe and his quill.

  6. One cannot take bugs off his clothes on Shabbos or read by candlelight. However, just glancing at text without reading is ok, like the gabbai glancing at what the children are studying to know which parsha it is.

  7. A person in one domain should not lean into a different domain and drink. (Were concerned he may transfer the whole cup into his domain) It’s permissible if he extends his head and most of his body into the second domain.

  8. There is a dispute between Abaye and Rava if we make this decree regarding a Karmelis. To begin with, transfer to Karmelis is only rabbinic, so the question is whether we protect the Karmelis with a Drabanan or not.

  9. The gemara tried to prove from our mishna that we make double protection for carrying, bc the tailor has the needle presumably on his clothing(that is not Norma way of carrying that would only be rabbinic) and we still make a decree that he shouldn’t go out close to Shabbos. The gemara introduces the opinion of R Yehuda, that for a tailor, carrying a needle in his clothes is not “weird” and it’s therefore not a שינוי and hed be obligated from the Torah for carrying that way.

  10. There is a law that until crops are finished their production, one can snack from them even before terumah has been taken. For example, one can drink some fresh wine from the press as long as they don’t take the wine out.

  11. A zav who wears a sort of “diaper” is carrying but it is a מלאכה שאינה צריכה לגופה- he has no interest in among the diaper go to the second location, jsut he doesn’t want to get dirty. This is a dispute between r Shimon and r yehuda is he is obligated or exempt.
