So again, this was a back and forth affair for most of the second half, but the first half was largely dominated by the Wolverines. Michigan struck first in this game. Believe it or not, even with Lincoln Riley and USC is high powered offense. Michigan put together a pretty quick drive here towards the end of the first quarter. It was capped off by a Cologne Mullings 53 yard touchdown run. And that also came just after Mullings picked up a first down and on a fourth in one play. So that was a really nice way to cap off the drive for Michigan and Cologne Mullings specifically. So Michigan went on top seven nothing after that. Moving forward in the action to the second quarter USC ended up having to punt. And up to this point in the game, they had just 14 total yards and this was with 10 minutes left in the second quarter. So their offense really took a long time to get going after that punt. The Wolverines then ended up going on a six play 80 yard touchdown drive, which ended with a finally. You see an explosive play from running back down of an Edwards. He took the ball 43 yards for his Russia for his one and only rushing touchdown of the game, but that was a huge one. And at this point in the game, the Wolverines were just dominating USC on the ground 178 rushing yards to USC's negative four. So that was a pure dominance on Michigan's part in this second quarter and in this first half more specifically. So Michigan was on top 14 nothing after that USC ended up getting on the board. Not too long after that they had a 29 yard field goal to put some points on the board. So it's 14 to three and they did have one more opportunity to put points on the board before the end of the first half. But quarterback Miller Moss ended up getting sacked by Kenneth Grant. Really nice to see the interior defensive line go to work and turn around what has been. A pretty disappointing season so far from them. So Kenneth Grant getting it on the sack that completely stalled their drive that ended the half. It was 14 to three Wolverines on top. USC got the ball to start the second half and it really did not take them very long to score their first touchdown in the game. They picked up three third down conversions on this first drive of the second half and with the final third down conversion being a nine yard touchdown pass from Moss to his wide receiver juice Robinson. And that was USC's first touchdown of the game. And this was one momentum really swung in USC's favor. So it was 14 to 10 Michigan was still on top. Michigan's offense just completely stalled out ended up hunting. They went free and out USC shut set up shop at the 34 yard line. And this is really where things could have got out of hand pretty quickly. For both teams quite frankly so it could have could have went in USC's favor had they continue to drive down the field but if it wasn't for number two on Michigan's defense. You know that we could be talking about a Michigan loss at this point so will Johnson star cornerback intercepted Miller Moss took it 42 yards for the pick six it's his second pick six of the season. Just four games in. He's already got two pick sixes. And that was his third career pick six if you remember from last season. He had a interception returned for touchdown on the first play of scrimmage. It was a game last season. So he has had a really decorated career in the maze in blue is surely a first round pick at this point. We'll talk a little bit more about Will Johnson later on but that put Michigan up 20 to 10. The USC ended up blocking the extra point. So hence just the 20 points, not the 21. So that very well could have been detrimental as well. He gets the ball back and they waste no time would he marks their fine running back took a carry 65 yards to get within striking distance. And at this point it was this was the most bizarre play of the game by far so his third goal. My steward rush Miller Moss got him to fumble forced the fumble Kenneth Grant picked up the ball. And he starts rumbling and bumbling and stumbling down the field. And they're running back. What he marks strips the ball directly out of Grant's hand. And it gives us the ball back. And all it took was two plays later for USC to score touchdown. And he also found Jay Fair, his open receiver and when I say open, I mean way way open. He was wide open. There was a busted coverage on this play. So things were getting pretty tight at this point Michigan was still up but it was 20 to 17. USC trying to make their comeback here. Michigan's offense really struggled in that third quarter they had just six plays in the third quarter and six total yards USC had 175 yards in that third quarter. So that one was truly all USC momentum was all the way in favor of the USC Trojans at this point. So it was looking like if Michigan didn't put more points on the board quickly that USC would take over. And honestly, that is quite literally what happened Donovan Edwards fumbled on the very next drive. And USC was already in a striking distance here they scored the go ahead touchdown on third and 16 Miller Moss through a touchdown to his wide receiver Jacobi Lane. This was USC's first lead of the game. It was 24 to 20 at that point Trojans on top. So this was the defining drive of the game with four minutes and two seconds left in the game. Michigan had to go 89 yards to score the game winning touchdown. You set up third and one. Cologne Mullings absolutely went full marsh on Lynch beast mode and took it 63 yards down to the USC 17 yard line he broke a few tackles. And I mean, it was impressive. If you didn't see this, I strongly encourage you to go to your, your, your phone, go to Twitter. It's just search Cologne Mullings and you'll probably see a few, few carries from this game quite frankly but this will probably be one of them 63 yards to get all the way down to the USC 17 yard line. So he capped it off with the game winning touchdown. It was fourth and goal at the one yard line. And they relied on their ground game, their offensive line and Cologne Mullings of all people to barrel into the end zone with less than a minute left is 37 seconds left on the clock when USC got the ball back. And they didn't end up doing anything. So they, they had a shot. It was fourth and nine for USC. And they ended up getting eight yards on the play. So it was close but no cigar for USC in their comeback effort. And at that point, that was, that was the game final score Michigan 27 USC 24. This was a pivotal game for the Wolverines to win early in the season, not only for the sake of staying in the big 10 race, but also just from a confidence standpoint. If they were to lose this game, you'd be two and two, you'd be on one in the big 10 with a gauntlet of games still remaining on the schedule. I mean we talk about Ohio State always at the end of the season. But they've also got Oregon left on the docket. They have to go to Washington, which is never an easy place to play and you cannot take that for granted. And they've got some other pretty tough looking games on the schedule Illinois is still undefeated went to Nebraska and beat them on Friday night. Indiana is looking like a competent football team. They are four and O as well. You can never take Michigan State lightly. And they are well to be determined tonight as of this recording they play Boston College here in a little bit. But still, the big 10 schedule is never going to be easy at this point. And you got to take a game like this in advance and grow from this and there's so much more for Michigan to grow on and learn from. I mean there were, there are many mistakes, especially defensively in the second half. They're going to have to learn how to adjust to this new offense that they're going to do with Alex orgy. I mean he hardly threw the ball. He was seven of 12, the 32 passing yards, 58 completion rate. And he toted the ball 13 times for 43 yards. So they relied heavily on the ground game. They ran for 290 yards as a unit. Colomb Mullings had 159 of those for two touchdowns down of an Edwards had 74 of them for a touchdown. Orgy had the 43 yards and Frederick Moore had a 15 yard rush as well. So I mean from the receiving and not really a whole lot to show from here. There's Morgan had three catches. Marlin Klein had one, Don O had one Fred Moore had one and Colomb Mullings had one. And the leading receiver was Marlin Klein, one catch for 10 yards. Yeah, they're going to have to figure out how to open up the pass game a little bit. You're not going to be able to rely on this ground and pound offense. Every single game, they're going to have to build up orgies confidence and passing the ball. He looked a little nervous out there at times when he went to drop back and pass. But I do think that you have something there with him that you can continue to grow from and incorporate more plays later on into the season. So, yeah, it's not going to happen overnight. It never does with a quarterback change, especially when you go from a guy like Davis Warren, who's more of a traditional pocket passer to a guy like Alex orgy who's hardly thrown the ball. He had seven passes in his career, or seven completions, I should say, in his career up until this very point. And he had seven completions in this game. So, yeah, he's, you're going to have to give him some patience. And look, this is going to be a learning curve. So, now that they won, and they're three and one on the season, maybe the expectations bump up a little bit. Maybe we can start talking about eight to nine wins instead of seven to eight. Maybe we can start talking about winning some of these other games that they aren't going to be predicted to win later in the season. But that's a conversation to be had at another time. So, just a few other stats to roll off here. Will Johnson had the one tackle, one pass breakup and one interception return for touchdown. Also defensively, Josiah Stewart played out of his mind on the edge for tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, four quarterback curries and a forced fumble. I mean, he was making plays all over the place. It was set in the Mays & Brew Slack channel. And, or I'm sorry, it was set in a Nick Duran's story on maysandbrew.com. And it was also set on the broadcast that Miller Moss might have nightmares about Josiah Stewart later tonight. And I can see why. I mean, he was a force in this game. So going over to USC's notable stats Miller Moss finished 28 to 51, 283 yards, three touchdowns and the one interception taken back for a score. What he marks, they're running back 13 carries 100 yards, Zachariah Branch, their electric wide receiver and return man had six catches for 98 yards. He had a really nice game. And then another receiver of there's Jacobi Lane had four catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. So yeah, I mean, this is, it was quite the game. I mean, it really just looked like it was USC's to lose after they scored that touchdown. It was a really daunting ensuing drive, 89 yards that they had to go. And they relied on Colle Mullings in the ground game. I mean, Colle Mullings just absolutely took over. He had 79 yards out of the 89 yards that they went down the field. So they truly let him put the team on his back. And I think that that's the way that you got to go moving forward with the running back rotation. You, I mean, it was pretty split, pretty close to 50 50 split between Mullings and Edwards Mullings had 17 carries. Edwards had 14 but at one point, it was 13 carries for Edwards and I think Mullings had eight. So they really relied on Mullings down the stretch of the game to turn out those big plays in the tough yards, especially on that fourth and goal. And that's the guy that you have to go to moving forward at RB one, straight up. Excuse me. Also notably, at the end of the game, Will Johnson was not in on the last couple defensive drives for the Wolverine. So we're going to have to monitor his injury status moving forward. They were already without Colston Loveland in the passing game. This was, absence was greatly missed for the Wolverines from the tight end position. There was just the one catch for Marlon Klein for 10 yards and that was on the final drive for the Wolverines. So they targeted him a couple times. It came up limping a little bit on the Mullings really long run on the final drive as well. So hopefully he's not too banged up. We'll have to see what Sharon Moore says in the post game press conference about his status and Will Johnson's. But yeah, it overall, I mean, you got to take the highs with the lows. Absolutely. If the high ends up being Michigan, get in the win. You take that every day of the week. So they truly welcomed quote unquote USC into the big 10 by handing them a loss in the big house. So again, lots to clean up on defense. Offensively, they're going to have to figure things out with Alex Orgy is your quarterback. You absolutely have to continue with him. And I don't think you really look back at Davis Warren at this point. I think that ship is kind of sale that experiment is over. You've got to just roll with the punches with Orgy because that is the offense that you're going to have the most success with this season. And I know it's probably not what many people want. It's not necessarily what I would totally want, but I wouldn't, I wouldn't ask for seven of 12 passing for 32 yards in every game, because you're not going to win every game like that. You can't rely on Colomullings to have 159 yards in every single game. You can't rely on the entire rushing attack to have 290 yards every single game for 6.3 yards per carry. You absolutely cannot. But you could today, they were able to do pull it off today. And you fight another day. You welcome in Minnesota next week. And then you have your first road game of the season go to Seattle, the take on Washington, which again, is not an easy place to play, even though Washington is much like Michigan. A little, regressed from last season's national championship game. But yeah, there's, there's a lot to work on, but also a lot to be encouraged about the offensive line looked vastly improved. I still question why they're doing this rotation of centers with Greg Crippen. I think you've got to just stick with one at four games in and you're swapping out centers. I mean, that's not the position that you want to be swapping in and out along the offensive line, especially with a new quarterback. And you got to establish chemistry between the quarterback in the center. It's a very important connection to have on the football field. And at this point, in my opinion, I would throw Greg Crippen out there is the starter. I think we've seen enough of Gaddis to know what he is, and what his limitations are. And I think Crippen has waited his turn and I think he's just the better overall player so I would roll with him. But what do I know I'm not a coach I'm just sitting here recording a podcast here on Saturday night so yeah again I'll look I'll just reiterate there's a lot to clean up but any any day that you walk away with an upset win. You were you were the underdog in Vegas you were the lower ranked team according to the Associated Press. And you ended up victorious so at the end of the day that's the only staff that matters and that's the only thing that matters and Sharon Moore would tell you that Alex Orgy said just as much on the CBS post game show said that the only thing that he really wanted to do is have a turnover free game and a win. And then that's exactly what he ended up doing did not turn the ball over made some very smart decisions with the football, in my opinion, so a lot to work off and a lot to work on as well so yeah that's going to do it for the post game podcast here tonight on the blog and podcast network thank you so much for listening you can follow me on Twitter at Von underscore lows on and follow amazing brew as well we've got a ton of post game content going on over there. And we'll have a ton more content of course this entire season for the Michigan Wolverine so again one more time Michigan 27 USC 24 at the big house on Saturday afternoon. And he helps that win for Sharon Moore, his first big 10 victory as head coach of the Michigan Wolverine so we will be back next week with another edition of the post game podcast.
