That's 800-398-7414. - Mr. Favourite Show, download the podcast at kcaaradio.com. - K-C-A-A. - K-C-A-A now presents Crossroads, a program in the public interest, bringing you the issues you need to hear about here in our community. Now here's your host, Mark Westwood. - And good afternoon to you. Good to be with you here on this Thursday, just 46 days, nine hours and 59 minutes from the election. I hope that you're getting ready and I hope you're going to be looking for your ballots in the mail around October 7th. I tell everybody, you know, watch out because they're going to send those ballots that are kind of yellow and blue and white and they look kind of like some advertisement. Your ballot will come with all the grocery store ads, with all the throwaway junk mail that you don't really want to, you know, keep or look at. And that's your ballot. Make sure you don't throw that out. Be careful for it, I tell everybody to watch. And also to go and check your voter registration, make sure that's all copistetic and cool. Those will come to you October 7th. And that's when the election begins. The election begins on October 7th. You know, it used to be everybody voted on the same day, November 5th or second or whatever day it fell on the first Tuesday of November. That's not the way it is anymore. The election takes place from October 7th all the way to November 5th this year, Tuesday, November 5th. That's when it ends. That's when we know the results. That's when the counting really starts and we get the bulk of the results, but we don't get all the results. And sometimes in some elections, it can take place for a month or so until they're certified. But what I'm trying to tell you is get ready. It's election time, we've seen all of the Kamala ads and the Trump people coming at us and the debates and the stuff going on, the silly stuff that Donald Trump says about eating cats and JD Vance and the single cat ladies and moons and Mars and you just can't make it up. It just is that crazy. But we're gonna get away from that for a minute. We're gonna, we'll talk about that in a little while as much as it would be tempting to talk about that. We need to talk about issues. We need to talk about people and real things. And my show, even though I was a Democratic National Committee delegate and I could tell you all about going to Chicago and being there on the convention floor, 12 rows back from when Kamala did that historic acceptance as the first black Indonesian lady woman accepting a major party nomination for president and probably will be our first female president. I'm gonna talk about that later. I wanna say to those people who are calling in to hear Joe Pardetto and Chris Mann and Phil Myers talk about Measure S and take phone calls. I got notified late last night that they were not gonna be able to be here or they could only be here for 30 minutes and I want the full hour. So we're gonna reschedule that and then I'll let you know and you know, we'll email you and do promotions over the air to let you know, probably in a week to two week that's gonna happen. Wanna welcome Nicholas Dibbs, Garden Cove School Door candidate who advertising is now advertising his campaign for school board area one in Garden Grove is a new client of ours and welcome to KCA and the success of KCA where the great many of our candidates who advertise with us actually do get elected and I can show you that track record is very, very good. You know, Mark Westwood here today though, to talk with a friend, someone who I agree with many, many items and topics who is very esteemed, who ran for the 23rd congressional district last time around, who has worked on the Bernie Sanders campaign prior to that and it's a lot of credentials and a good friend. I wanna welcome and say hello to Derek Marshall. Hi, Derek. Hey Mark, how's it going? - Pretty good. Like I said, 46 days, nine hours and 59 minutes. - Until we're counting Mark. - Until the polls close, right? Who's counting? Seven weekends. I count elections right now in the term of weekends and there's even fewer, I think there's five or six between October 7th and that night so we gotta get it on, we gotta get going and part of this is to let you know if you haven't been paying attention before, you know, we need in order for Kamala Harris to enact democracy, to bring back and restore things that we need to still fix from the Donald Trump era, you know, in 2016 to 2020 and that, you know, President Joe Biden's done a dynamic job at but there was so much damage done that you can't really fix it in three, three and a half years and so, you know, we gotta get congressional candidates elected from the Senate and from the House and in California, we can take back the Congress right here by electing congressional representatives in California, don't you agree? - A hundred percent, yeah, I mean, I think that, you know, look, top of the ticket matters, it's really, really important to step the tone of politics in the country but it's the down ballot candidate, it's Senate, it's Congress and it's local candidates, school boards, city council, races that are going to really help to make sure that all the policies and the types of development and the visionary development that we wanna see actually get enacted. - That's right. And Derek, I'm gonna give a few websites out right now, just to interrupt, there's just for a few seconds. You know, my father fought in three wars in Korea, World War II and Vietnam and a lot of us have relatives and forefathers, people who fought hard for our democracy and the least we can do is vote number one but our job right now is to research, to listen to candidates, to hear the issues and, you know, make up our mind and make sure you're registered to vote. If you're not, there's a couple websites you can go to and I'm gonna give you the easiest ones to remember. Just the easy way to remember is you're driving down the freeway right now going, how am I gonna write this down? You don't have to, just remember, Iwillvote.com. Iwillvote.com, that will take you to any website and any state to be able to register. You can also go to the Secretary of State, SOS, like Save Our Souls, secretaryofstate.ca.gov, forward slash elections, that's a little more complicated. In San Bernardino County, it's real easy. Just Google Go Blue San Bernardino County. The website, sanrenodemocrats.org, easy. But Go Blue San Bernardino County will bring you up all of those websites. - Owning a rental property sounds like a dream. You're interested in finding out about Kamala Harris, and by the way, it's Kamala, not any other way that Donald Trump pronounces it. Kamala and law, just Google Harris. That's all you need to do. It will come up right away. Everything from the Victory Fund all the way down through KamalaHarris.com. And of course, Derek Marshall's website, which is a very informative website, and it's Marshall CA-47, am I saying that right? - Derek Marshall CA.com. - Derek Marshall CA.com. Derek Marshall with one L or two Ls. - Two Ls. - Two Ls. Derek D-E-R-E-K. Marshall M-A-R-S-H-A-L-L-C-A, like California.com. Correct? - Correct. - You spelled it right. You got it, you got it this time. (laughing) - I have actually written it down. I was just kind of playing a little bit. But, Derek, it's so important to get people like you. You are just a champion organizer. You are organized. You are building this campaign up from the ground up. I have to say that you're doing it mostly on your own. You're getting a lot of support and attaboys from the Democratic Party and maybe from members of Congress. But I don't think you're getting a whole lot of funds, are you? - No, no, no, no. And I think that that's an issue. And I think it's just an issue, generally speaking, I think that we as Democrats, we as working family party members, we have to understand that we are up for play throughout the whole country. I think that in terms of my own politics, you and I have talked about this a lot. I don't necessarily see the world in pure red and blue terms. I just see that there's a whole lot of issues right now in the Inland Empire, in the I-10 quarter, in the mountains that are just not getting done. And there's a failure of visionary leadership. And I think that what I would like to see in the region, whether it's the air quality, whether it's the willy-nilly development of warehouses, whether it is trying to figure out where we're gonna build affordable housing, what we need right now in the Inland Empire is we need visionary leadership. And so when people are sitting down, they get their ballots in the mail, and they start to think and they start to do their research, I'm really, really hoping that people will, if you're a Republican or you're an independent, don't just look at the D-next to someone's name. Really do some research and take a look and see what are some of the ideas that they're talking about? What are some of the things that are being discussed? What are some of the visions for the community? And then ask themselves, are things right now in our region, do they feel good, do they feel great? Because if not, it's not because of top leadership in the state of California. It's because of a lot of regional leadership and a lot of the regional leadership particularly here in the high desert. - If I can have Eric play a trumpet sound right now, don't, don't, don't know, that's it in a nutshell. You just said it, say it again. It's not just about the top leadership, that's good, and there's issues and it's important about that, but it's about Congress and how they vote. - Exactly, yeah, precisely. - And, you know, they should be representing the people of their district first, not their party. - Great. - 100%. - 100%. And, you know, when it comes to affecting us, you know, there's been some things thrown around by Trump and also by Jay over and all the other people that support him and people like Ken Calvin and oh, we should shut down the government if we don't get our way on something and cost us millions of dollars, it damages people. Their social security checks will be a later not on time or at all if it goes on further and further and further. There's been so much fighting on the Republican party side, not the Democrats, we're very united, very united, but the Republican party with their different factions. And, you know, Jay Olens, he's a part of that. He's a part of that where, you know, he thinks about party first instead of the people first. And, we need a people first person that looks at all of the people of the 23rd congressional district and says, how can we get funds and how can we get grants in? How can we get funding for what we need? And, you know, and how do we get the people off the streets that are on the streets? How do we make prices more affordable, right? - Exactly, exactly. I mean, you know, I think when people are taking a look at the ballots, they've got two choices. They've got, you know, me, Derek Marshall, and then they've got my opponent Jay Obernalsy. And Jay, you know, supports the full ban on abortion, even in the case of rape or incest. Jay-- - Extreme. - Against the bipartisan, yes, he has a fan on abortion. - Yeah, just a total overall ban on abortion. Is that correct? - He supports it. - He supports it. - He's 25, yeah, and just in terms of some of the bills here, I mean, he voted no on the Women's Health Protection Act twice, no on the Right to Contraception Act, no on protecting workers who have abortion from being fired. I mean, he's bad for women's reproductive rights, both stop. - So let's talk about this issue for maybe five minutes 'cause we're both men and, you know, I have never gotten a woman pregnant or an unwanted pregnancy myself. I think that's probably the same with you. And, you know, I don't like abortion, but that's not my place. That's something that I believe, and I trust women, have the responsibility to make the right choices. So I want to talk, just give me three minutes, Derek, and then I'll get back to you, okay? I'm gonna put this in a nutshell. I believe in science, ladies and gentlemen, and this all involves science. And I also believe in God, and I am faith, and I'm a Roman Catholic. So, you know, all of this stuff, I had to kind of justify, not justify, but reconcile. How am I gonna vote on this issue, which is what I'm supposed to do. And in my research, and I found out, and, you know, I gotta tell you, by the way, there's two ladies that have babies on the place of this planet, because I was a concerned friend, a concerned like a brother, not any of my real sisters, but like a brother to ladies that had to make this hard decision. And it's a hard decision. And, you know, I help them make that decision, and I've also helped people make the other decision, to help them come about the decision and be supportive. And that's what we as men have to do. But I believe in science, you know, and the old days, believe it or not, and some people that I've talked to that were born in 1998, 1997, when I said the rabbit died, they didn't know about something called the rabbit test, where they took the ovaries out of a rabbit, took the urine from a female. They could only do this after five weeks of conception and figure out, and it was about 65% accurate, not even very accurate, that whether woman was pregnant or not. And that slowed down the process. Nowadays, you go into a grocery store, and I priced it just before I came on the air, state of brothers has an EPT test that the day after you can take, and if there is human, chorionic, gastrointestinal, pina, something or other, HCG, in the blood, it will detect it, and it will tell you whether woman is pregnant or not. That test is $5.99, and it is 99% accurate. 99% accurate, whereas the rabbit test was 65% accurate. But there's where we are. Women make the choices, they make them quickly, they make them fast. No, Mr. Trump, they are not aborting babies after birth. They're not aborting babies at nine months or eight months or seven months. I have faith in women, they don't make those kinds of choices. Doctors won't let them make those kinds of choices. Those are all stories, those are all scare tactics, to cloud the issue for their own political gain. And that's what the problem is. There are four things in pregnancy. There's gestation, germinal, embryonic, and fetal. And there's trimesters. You hear about the trimesters, the first, the second, and third trimester. And it really takes three weeks for sperm and egg called a zygote to really be in place. And that's still in the fallopian tubes. That hasn't even entered the uterus yet. And so, it's not until maybe six or seven weeks that it's not a blastocyst, just a bundle of cells. And just a very little bit, at five, six, seven, eight weeks, can you even see a trace of a spinal cord or a neural cord or anything like that. You know, we have science behind us. And that science was given to us by God to be able to figure this out. And I do believe that's my own personal belief. And I know women, and I have women, and I know faith in women that they make those right choices. And then lastly, I have faith in God, that God lets no babies suffer. And that's my religious side that says, hey, if you have faith in God, you know he's not gonna let a little baby suffer through this. And just like death, and just like, if God wants to put a soul on the face of this earth, he's gonna do it. And he's gonna take it off, or God the Creator, not really have this gender. God the Creator is gonna take that baby and soul and put it on the face of this earth or after. And even the Jewish people believe, by the way, that at the first breath, the soul comes into the body. We just don't know that. But what we do know is science, and we need to use our brains, and we need to make sure that we don't get so emotional about this, and that we follow the notion that, oh, at the moment of intercourse, right after, that's a baby, and no, it's not. It is the potential of becoming a human being. And my belief is that people need to make logical decisions in this day and age. And if they need to, especially in the case of rape and incest, or like the baby doesn't drop from the fallopian tubes into the uterus, and it's something they call an ectopic pregnancy, an ectopic presidency, my pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy. The presidency is what we have with Donald Trump. Ectopic pregnancy, that... Owning a rental property sounds like a dream. Collect a rent and relax. That is until you realize how much work goes into getting it ready. First, you need to conduct market research to understand local rental trends and determine a competitive rent price. Then there's cleaning, staging, repairs, and hiring a professional photographer. Next, develop a marketing strategy, list the property on rental sites, and schedule countless showings. Oh, no, three times for the information, drop the lease on collection. (mumbles) Whew, sound complicated? Runners Warehouse is here to take the hard work off your rental to do West. Our job is complicated because it should be. We handle everything from marketing and showing your property to screening tenants and preparing the lease. Our best-in-class property management professionals take care of your property as if it were our own. From rent collection to maintenance coordination, all for one flat monthly fee. Can kill, and it almost killed my mother. And had she not been at St. Bernarding Catholic Hospital and had something called a DNC, which is just an early term for abortion, to get rid of that ectopic pregnancy, it would have killed her, and I would not be here on the face of the planet today, because that happened before she had me. Two babies before she had me, actually. So that was done in the 1950s, by the way, in the 1950s. So here we are now, in 2024, here we are, and with the reversal of Roe v. Wade, we've had some states and some right-wing, extremist, Republican men who should not be deciding this, men who should not be deciding this, men who should not be deciding this, making these decisions, and we have women having to travel far distant states. We have women that are dying, women that are losing their ability to have children in the future if their fallopian tubes get blown out, because of an ectopic pregnancy. This is how we become, and this is the choice that's on the ballot right now. Not a choice to abort babies at nine months old, or for women to make wrong decisions, and have late-term abortions, 'cause they changed their mind about having a baby. That just doesn't happen. I can tell you, from most women I know, when they find out they're pregnant, and if they haven't terminated that pregnancy early on, they bond with their baby, and they're gonna have that baby. So all of that being said, these are my personal views, not Derek's, but my personal views about abortion and this issue. Taking those all into consideration, taking those all into consideration, this is the topic that is influencing our election, and that's to use science and logic, or to go with this emotional hocus pocus. That's my belief. I don't know where you stand on this, Derek, but where do you stand on it? - I mean, I think the answer is really simple. It's, you know, your body, your choice. My body, my choice. And I don't think that we should be legislating this. I think it's, you know, the decision that the opposition was, you know, a huge mistake, but here we are. And we need members of Congress to go in and to get to Congress and codify Roe v. Wade. I mean, we need to get folks that go in and codify it before we've already seen, I mean, Amber Thurman. We, I think everyone has by now over the last 24 hours, her, her name, a woman that died, was one of the first women to have died because she didn't get access to reproductive healthcare. And that's what we're staring at right now. And we're an advanced country. This should not be happening in an advanced country. And as far as I'm concerned, you know, my opponent, Jay Obernolte, has voted and made very, very clear where he stands on the issue. And so if you're an independent or, you know, even a Republican woman out there, you know, a Democratic woman, whatever flavor of political, if you're staying there and saying, hey, who's gonna be the candidate that's gonna be looking out for my right, my reproductive right? I'm gonna go for Derek Marshall. There's a new Marshall in town and I'm gonna vote with him. - Yep, that's right. We're gonna play that spot here in a minute. By the way, Derek has a spot on our radio station as well. But it's very, very so. It is a woman's choice. It's between women and their God or their choice or whatever they're going to make. And we do not need to be legislating a uterus or that choice. And men are the absolute wrong people to make that choice as far as what can happen and what can happen. And, you know, there's been a lot of hocus pocus, you know, a lot of misinformation given out. It's extended now to the point where, you know, people can't even get, you know, healthcare and family planning when it comes to trying to have a baby, you know, whether they're trying to get artificial insemination or anything like that. These extreme states have gone that way now. A lot of people that don't understand the issues, that don't understand science, you know, you know, don't understand the difference between a gamut and a zygote and, you know, a fertilized egg and not a fertilized egg, you know, whether it's a sperm or an egg or whether it's, you know, in the germinal stage or the gestation stage or the embryonic stage or fetal stage, they don't understand the science of all this. And so they need to be able to, you know, make these decisions. And you as a voter need to do the research and understand this is not a black and white issue. And you can't make it a black and white issue. And you can't make it the single issue to pick a presidential candidate who, by the way, is back walking all the way back now because he realizes he's gonna lose women's votes. In states across the United States, this issue is on the ballot directly in 10 states. And that's why I think, you know, Democrats may win on this one because the Republicans have gone too far, too far extremist the other way. Derek, we've got to take just a moment for a spot break here and we'll be back. We've been speaking with Derek Marshall, Congressional candidate for the 23rd Congressional District and I'm gonna let him speak next more after this. Thanks, Derek. The rent is too darn high. Let's Marshall in affordable housing and real affordable universal healthcare. Better Union jobs. The current Congress member put his party first and not people. But there's a new Marshall in town. Our incumbent party politician voted no on the recently passed bipartisan infrastructure bill. He voted no to $3 billion in new funds for our district and no to 35,000 new jobs right here at home. He said, we need a secure border but now he's rolled it back to play politics. We need to Marshall real soon. We've got to hire a new Marshall, Derek Marshall. You can go to Derek MarshallCA.com. Paid for a Derek Marshall for Congress. One of the best ways to build a healthier local economy is by shopping. This is KCAA. (upbeat music) - KCAA, 10.50 am, what a 6.5 FM, the station. The stations that leave a no-wister behind. I'm Mark Westwood, host of Community Crossroads, and I'm speaking with Derek Marshall, Democratic candidate, endorsed by the Democratic Party. Lots of endorsements out there. Running a real strong campaign. He's running for Congress to be a member of the House of Representatives of the 23rd Congressional District. Welcome back, Derek. - Thanks, Mark. How's it going? - Well, we're doing okay. You know, we played that spot, and we pulled it out of the archives just to play it during this program, and I realized, oh, we have to change the dates in that. (laughs) I don't know if you heard it or not, but we need to change that around a little bit. But that's a great spot. We do need a new Marshall in town, and you summarize just quite a bunch of stuff we're talking about. Well, let's expand about that. You know, the rents to darn high. Let's talk about that, Derek. Tell us what your thoughts are on that. - Yeah, I mean, I think, look, it's supply and demand, and right now it's pretty clear that we're having a housing crisis because we don't have enough supply. And so what we need to do is we need to create more supply. So we can do that a couple of different ways. Either we can incentivize private developers to build a private, or we can say, hey, you know what? And this is where I kind of land on this, is I think that we need to have a public option for housing. If we take a look at housing models in other countries, countries that don't have homelessness, countries where they're able to keep their rent and their housing costs relatively stable, what we notice is Germany, France, South Korea, Japan, pretty much every other country besides the United States is that they have a public option for housing. And I think that we need to have a public option for housing here in the US as well. - We can't afford not to, number one is expensive. And there's multiple reasons why people are housing challenged or homeless, or kids are couch surfing without homes and bedrooms. And it's just financial disparity. There's also substance abuse. There's also medical problems. There's also emotional problems, mental problems. We have to be able to take care of those. And each community needs to show their social responsibility. The city of Norwalk says we're not gonna have a homeless shelter, we're not gonna do anything like that. Even though the voters of California voted to get funds for that, they're denying doing that. Now Governor Newsom's probably gonna have to sue the city of Norwalk to get that taken care of. But like in the city of San Bernardino, or even in the new type of there's a lot of homeless too, in the city of San Bernardino, in just one park called Paracel Park, they've now reached the number of 400 homeless people on the hill. They're trying to do something about it, but they have, they may be starting, but they had an injunction for a while they couldn't move people or anything like that. But it's expensive, how is it expensive? Because when people are homeless or housing challenged, they're in the survival mode. They're gonna do anything to get a meal, to get a bite to eat. That might include maybe some theft and some crime, maybe some vandalizing to get a piece of pipe out of a wall, or from the ground of the park or whatever, so they can cash that in to eat. 'Cause if you were homeless on the street, this is an interesting statistic, Derek. It costs like over $600 just to be homeless in California. That's unacceptable. So Derek Marshall has a plan for that. And that plan is to address this situation and dead on, and not to run away from it, right? - Exactly, and I think we've seen in addition to housing, so housing first model, but in addition to housing, it's coming up with facilities that have wraparound services, that have mental health, that have healthcare, so that you can get folks, meet them where they're at, in the stage of houselessness, or in the stage of recovering and being housed again, and having a job. And I think it's understanding and taking a look at the holistic look at the problem, and saying, okay, we need to do everything from make housing more affordable on one end of the spectrum, and on the other end, we need to make sure that, if someone is facing a mental health crisis, if there was a death in the family, or if something led them to addiction, a lot of veterans right now, we don't talk about this enough, but there's a huge number of houseless veterans in the high desert, in the Inland Empire, that are houseless, because they have some type of PTSD, born from service in Afghanistan, or in the Middle East, they come home, they start to, they start to soothe themselves by taking drugs, say they all of a sudden they go down the rabbit hole, dishonorable discharge, and suddenly we have veterans that are living on the streets. And I just don't think that that's right. I think that, again, it's not like we as humanity have never seen or had to deal with this problem before there are working models out there on how to solve homelessness. - It's not rocket science. - It's not rocket science. - Not at all, no, it's actually, it's simple. It can't be really simple. It is a holistic plan. You can't do a unilateral approach. And by the way, we're talking with Derek Marshall, who's a congressional district, a Democratic candidate for the 23rd congressional district. And if you think for one minute, Jay Obelalty's gonna talk about this for more than 10 seconds or have any knowledge about this. He has a unilateral approach of just pushing him out of town. Go get a job. That's not the answer. There are multiple multilateral tasks that we have to do. These people are broken and they need repair. They need help. They need a hand up. They don't need a, you know, they can get food. They know how to get food. They knew how to do that. They can survive. We shouldn't leave them to do that. And it's good to talk to somebody who's running for Congress with a heart that's gonna go in the House of Representatives and not just worry about fundraising, fundraising, fundraising. You shake the guy's hand with one hand. He's got his hand out with the other for some money, some change to even talk to you. And Derek Marshall's not gonna be that way. And, you know, let's talk a little bit about Project 2025, if you don't mind for a minute. - Yeah, for sure. - I mean, that's a 900 page document. If you watch the Democratic National Convention, that big book was not. And over exaggeration where they brought it out and read a few pages off of it. And one of the things they're coming for is your Social Security, your retirement plan. The Social Security isn't your only retirement plan, but it shouldn't be left up to private corporations to fund your retirement either. And we need to talk about this in a real responsible manner, right? - Absolutely. I mean, the thing that first of all, Project 2025, it was developed by this organization called the Heritage Foundation. And what I think that's so funny right now is you have characters like Donald Trump, who are trying to distance themselves from the radical nature of Project 2025. And yet it was written by the main Republican think tank. - Oh, he had crossed the tease about the eyes. Let's face it. - Well, imagine, imagine there was a think tank that was called the Democratic Donkey think tank, right? And all the Democratic policy that's ever been thought up or 99% of it came from the Democratic Donkey think tank. And then the Democrat in that election said, "Oh, actually no, no, we were not working with that think tank." I mean, Project 2025 comes directly from the Heritage Foundation. And the Heritage Foundation is the main think tank. It is the main think tank for the Republican party and they produce this document, Project 2025, which calls for the abolition of public education. It calls for the privatization of Medicare. It calls for reducing and taking away your social security. It really is a radical document. And anyone that's listening right now should really understand that every single Republican, including my opponent, Jay Obernolte, is closely tied to the think tank and to the strategic vision of Project 2025. - That's right. And you know, you hear Derek Marshall talking about issues in depth and direct, but you won't hear as Jay Obernolte talking about that. Think about it folks, you're getting ready to vote. Has he done anything? I think he's had a term now, maybe two, I'm not sure, in Congress and in state assembly. And what can you think of one thing he's done? You can't. He's just about propelling himself and he supports whatever's gonna be the one that gets him the funds. He's got his hand out to shake your hand, count your fingers afterwards and he's got his hand out to get some money from you. But he's just trying to embed himself in the fabric of the money making machine and the party machine of the Republican party and he's not really representing you. We're talking about social security, we're talking about homelessness, we're talking about personal and emotional choices that have to be made. You know, we're talking about a variety of things, affordable housing. I'm gonna turn Derek loose on this. Derek, talk about your plan for affordable housing and bringing housing available, the American dream back to people. - Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I think that what we need to do is massive investment, right? So there's gotta be a public option for housing. So we have to, I know that there's a couple of different plans. Senator Bernie Sanders talks about 15 million units that translates down to, you know, about 40 or 50,000 units per congressional district. And I think what we need to do is we need to identify areas and the way that this public housing works is instead of needing to fill out a credit report, instead of, you know, going through all this paperwork, having to pay 50 or a hundred bucks to be able to qualify for an apartment. What you do is you show how much you're making. And if you're a student that's not making anything, then your rent is gonna be effectively nothing. If you are houseless and you're trying to get off the street, your rent is going to be effectively nothing. If you are making 50,000, if you're making $100,000 a year, then you start to pay. And again, I'm talking about a public option for housing, housing that makes sure that all homelessness is eliminated, housing that makes sure that a student can get the education that they need so that they can be the next generation of union electrician. So that they can be the next generation of rail workers as we build out transportation with this nature, yeah. - You know, all that affects the prices and goods of things, transportation, that, you know, our truckers and teamsters out there are some of them, you know, under Amazon are getting paid the same wage they got paid in the mid 1980s and Amazon's bragging about it. The fact of the matter is that's, you know, way down, way down from what they should be paying. And, you know, wages need to go up, correct? On everybody across the board. You know, we-- - Go ahead, I'm sorry. - Oh, no, no, I was gonna say absolutely. And, you know, speaking about teamsters, I'm very, very happy to have the endorsement of the teamsters local 1932. And really, it's the labor movement that is gonna be partnering with campaigns like ours that have partnered with campaigns like ours. We're all rowing in the same direction to make sure that we're fixing the kitchen table budget so that we're making sure that you have higher wages and that your costs are, you know, that we take a look at each and every one of the costs. - And you're working in a safe environment. You're working in a productive environment. - Yeah, you know, all these things that unions have brought about and just gonna touch on this just for a little second 'cause I'm gonna make an announcement here in just 10 seconds so you're gonna have to indulge me here. - Owning a rental property sounds like a dream. We leverage industry-focused insights with the collective technical resources of our firm to elevate your performance, uncover opportunity and move upward at MossAtoms.com. - You know, your worker's safety, your working conditions, your wages, unions are growing. And the reason they're growing is because corporations aren't giving the workers a break. Corporations are why things are so high and so expensive. Plus, post-handemic, during the pandemic, everything went up to an all-time high. It's hard to get those prices down again. But what has gone down? Gas has gone down. We've seen that in unemployment, it's down at 4% for like 14 straight quarters now under Democrats and what we've done. Gas is down, eggs are down, milk is down, bacon is down, you know, all those things are coming down in price. And they're coming down a little slowly, but just be patient. You don't want to go too fast or it brings about, you know, a recession or it brings about, you know, you know, a depression. And you don't want to do that either. Economics are a very fragile thing. But, you know, I want to make this announcement that this radio station, Derek, will soon be called the Teamsters Radio Network. - Awesome. - And you heard it first here. I'm the general manager of the station and we're proudly. We haven't crossed all the dots and TDIs, but we're proudly moving someplace in San Bernardino that may be really close or right next door to the Teamsters, could be even in the same building. I'm just hinting at it. Our studios at KCA are moving in the next month and we're going to be up and running and ready by November 5th to do a live broadcast on election night from our new headquarters next to a debate and not a debate, an election night watch party. And we thank some people there. We can't say it right now. I guess walking up right next to it, Mr. Corgan, but anybody knows that name, you know where we're going. And we're happy and excited about that and to be happy a part of the solution. And Derek Marshall, you're a part of the solution. You're not a part of the problem. And I commend you for that and running and having this voice. And, you know, Derek Marshall, candidate, Democratic candidate for the 23rd Congressional District with logical thought, thinking about people first, people first, politics second, not the party first, the people first. And you will represent all of the people, right? - Absolutely. If you're a Republican, if you're an independent, if you're a Democrat, I'm gonna be your candidate. I'm going to be the candidate for all of our constituents here. This is not an exclusive club. I don't, I'm not interested in being a show pony and just showing up for photo ops. I'm interested in serving our community. If you take a look at our office where we opened our office, we opened our office in Old Town, Victorville. It's one of the few Old towns on all of Route 66 from Chicago all the way to L.A. that hasn't been revitalized. And so I'm living my values. A lot of people said, oh, why would you want to open your office there? It's dangerous. There's this and it is a reflection of our values and the values that we have on this campaign that we are very serious about serving community. For me, I'm not interested in the pop and pageantry of being a member of Congress. My opponent, Jay Obernolte, I think from everything that I've kind of seen, he does something. But ultimately, I've seen a lot of performative, I've seen a lot of performative just actions from him. And I think the reason for that is that he doesn't fundamentally believe that the government is responsible for things like education, health care, social security. And so if you're listening today and you're a Republican, that's not a fixed income, that's getting social security or that's getting benefits, all of that is at risk if we keep on supporting folks like my opponent, Jay Obernolte. If you vote to shut down the government, social security, ABT, in vaccinations, transportation, electrical grids, all those things that are-- let me ask you a question, Derek, right to the point, do you believe government is our enemy or is it an asset? I believe it is an asset. It is certainly not the enemy. It's the enemy if it's in your bedroom, right? If it's trying to tell you your body my choice, then that's problematic. But I think in terms of-- Go ahead. And kids aren't going to school and having gender changes. I mean, just the extremity of some of the things that are said that Jay Obernolte is quiet or supports quietly or even chimes in on will tell you that he should not go back to Congress again. He is just as dangerous as Donald Trump because he votes for that kind of stuff. He's just as dangerous as JD Vance because he just mouths those words to get those political contributions to stay in his congressional status, to get the hot towels in Congress and use the congressional gym and be the big guy with the big title. He doesn't care about you. He doesn't care about the 23rd congressional district. Derek Marshall does. And that's why he's here. That's why we need a new Marshall in town, right? There is a new Marshall in town. Derek Marshall. We have to have it coming with my guns blazing, right? Yeah, and hey, then you get some old Derek Marshall or Democrats just want to take all of our guns away. How many guns do you think that Barack Obama took away in the United States? Zero. Exactly. How many guns do you think Kamala Harris will take away? Zero. Now, I am a little bit more progressive and I think that I don't believe we need military assault rifles with 50 caliber bullets that would blow a two inch hole in you to protect yourself. I have a gun, I'm okay with people owning guns. But I never really shoot it. It's just for protection. It's kind of like your personal private party parts. You don't really talk about it. You keep it quiet and undercover and you never show it off and you only use it when you need to. (laughs) But I gotta tell ya, I'm not anti-gun, but I'm smart gun. Does that make sense to you? As a future possible representative of Congress, how do you come out on it? How do you wash out on all this? Yeah, I mean, you know, it's funny. The other day was Constitution Day and so I was invited to speak at a panel and so we were talking with a constitutional law professor and the head of political science at Victor Valley College and we were talking about all these things. And you know, and I, like I, when we were talking about the Constitution and the importance of the Constitution, as I said, like, you know, the Constitution, there's a sanctity to the Constitution. It has lasted these couple of hundred years. There is, there's something special about a document that can last a couple hundred years. That being said, the Constitution, also by the mechanisms that make up the Constitution, allow for it to breathe and grow. It's a living document. It was made to be a living document and at the same time, there is a sanctity and a tradition that comes with it. And so the problem with our politics and we're talking about this in the panel, is that everything gets so extreme when we're in campaign season. And so suddenly it's like, you know, this side becomes the enemy of the people, that side becomes the enemy of the people. And it's all really ridiculous. And so, and the same thing comes when it comes to, you always hear, oh, Democrats want to take your guns, Democrats are bad for business. So reality is, is exactly what you and I have just said, is that the Democrats don't want to take your guns, right? They want to create an environment where it is safer to own a gun. And that's very different from wanting to take away your guns, right? And where I fall on it is I think that we need to have a couple of common sense gun reform. Close some of the loopholes, you know, make sure that we're, you know, if you have a history of abuse or if you have a history of mental illness, okay, maybe this should be something that, you know, you're not going to easily get access to guns. So I think that's one, you know, that's one part of it. And I think also just look at the facts, right? So if you're, again, if you're an independent or if you're a Republican, listening to this, take a look at the history. Has Democrats taken the guns away? And the answer is, no, right? And I learned this, you know, the test starts to being good. - Okay, Derek, turn your head just a little bit because I'm losing your phone signal just for a second. Okay. - Okay. - Keep talking. - Okay, how is that in my background? - That's better, that's better, yeah. - All right, yeah. - I'm taking the call from my house right now and I live out in the desert and sometimes the stuff can be old stuff. - Yeah, okay. And, you know, there you have the, you know, Derek talks to you direct about this. He talks to you direct about guns, it's logic. It is not extreme left, it's not extreme right. You know, it's kind of what the American people want, which most American people are just that way. When they, it comes down to it, they want safe streets, they want good schools, they want their electricity to come on when they need it, they want their water to be clean when they drink it, they want their air to be, you know, be able to breathe, they don't want to spend a ton of money for things and food. And, you know, they want representation and they don't want a full-time fundraiser in their congressional seat. That's all they do is fundraise to stay where they are. And that's what I'm accusing J.R. Wonolte of doing. That's all he does is fundraise. And, you know, I know that money is the mother's milk and, you know, you really need to, if you want to help get a good person in Congress and you get Derek Marshall in Congress, you want to donate to him. So, if they went to your website, it's Derek Marshall with 2Lsca.com. - Yeah, exactly. - We want to make that Derek Marshall.gov, but we can't do that yet, but we're going to do that soon. And, that means he'll be in office when he uses a .gov on there. But, you know, there's so many things we could talk about and, you know, there's so much in an hour we can talk about, but we also need a representative that we call a congressional district and say, I want to talk about a lot or whatever. I'm going to tell you a quick story. It's my cheeseburger story. It happened yesterday, National Cheeseburger Day. I went to Wendy's and I took my general sales manager to full-on, so I was going to spend a bunch of money. It was going to be a cheeseburger for one cent. Then I said, well, you have to have your app. I'm in the drive-through line. I can't download the app. So I says, give me three cheeseburgers. It was 25 bucks. That's expensive for three cheeseburgers. We didn't get drinks or fries or anything else. Then we went up there. I gave him a debit card. He charged my debit card. Said, drive around the other side of the building 'cause we're not ready for you yet. Then he comes right out and says, the card didn't go through. I looked up my phone. Yes, it's plenty of money in there. Handed the same card back. He went into the building with my card. I followed him back in going, wait a minute. I hope he's not going to charge me twice. I looked on my Bank of America website and lo and behold, they charged me twice. And I said to him, wait a minute. You charge me twice. You're going to, look, this is my phone. You charge me twice. I says, can you refund me one? I go talk to the manager and the manager says, oh, we can't refund that to you. It'll be two or three days. We'll get back to you. We leverage industry-focused insights with the collective technical resources of our firm to elevate your performance, uncover opportunity, and move upward at MossAtoms.com. That's the kind of stuff we need to be able to call a congressman and say, we need a law so they can't do that. That you can't tell me they couldn't have refunded me that money, but they literally stole money. Not on the price was outrageous, but then they charged me twice. And if I call my local congressional office, I'm going to get a voice recording, and I'm going to press one for this and a two for this, and I'm going to get a voicemail, and they're not going to get back to me. And I need a congressman, Mr. Marshall, that maybe about my Tuesday worker, that might be a little bit about other things, that there are injustices happening to people all over the place, and we need our Congress to have ears and to listen to us, not just propagate themselves. Don't you agree? Cheeseburgers for all, Mark. That's right. I wanted my one-cent cheeseburger, but that's kind of a funny story in a way. I know people are laughing about that, but at the same time, gosh darn it, you know, I can't call my local congressman right now and have him listen to me. What I'll get is an email back asking me out, we've looked at this, we'll investigate it, and by the way, can you donate $25? And then I'll get 50 emails in the next two weeks, you know, donate now, chip in now, donate, you know, that's not right. We need representatives in Congress that will represent us, and Derek Marshall will represent you, whether it's a cheeseburger, or whether it's your child's education, you know, we haven't even gotten immigration, we only have about three minutes. Echo me on this, Derek. I talk to people in other states, let's just, or Trump says, there's not millions and millions of immigrants coming across our borders, trying to kill people. They're not doing that. That's a lie. It's not, you know. It's a lie as old as time. I mean, you know, we have, since the beginning of this country, there have been, you know, there has been complaints about migration. You know, my favorite is when Ben Franklin was complaining about, you know, these four, the immigrants talking about German, right? Back in the 1760s. And so there's always been a complaint about migration. Now, that doesn't mean that, you know, there aren't serious things that we have to discuss. You know, border security, et cetera. But again, you know, the Democrats are good on that, you know. And I think that there is a lot of decent policy that's out there. - We have a comprehensive plan. We have a comprehensive plan. And it got rejected by the Republicans in block because Donald Trump says it wouldn't be expeditatory to him to get reelected. Okay, we got the three minutes left.
