The picturesque Finger Lakes area in New York is now recognized as an important wine region in the United States. “In Europe, winemakers have spent centuries identifying the characteristics of world- class wine, learning what grapes grow best in what soils, under what conditions and honing their skills needed to produce the finest vintages. While winemaking in the Finger Lakes is still in its infancy, at just over 160 years-old, in recent years the region has garnered deserved acclaim as one of the “greatest Riesling regions” of the world and “America’s premier cool-climate wine region.” “Much of the success of winemaking in Finger Lakes has been shaped by a handful of European Winemakers who have blended the best of old-world traditions, training, and experience with new-world innovation, a willingness to experiment and to share ideas and the flexibility to adjust to any given situation.” Wine journalist David Nershi, CSW (well-traveled in the region) is our guest to uncork all that is the Finger Lakes.

“Award-winning Tito’s Tacos and Tito’s Handmade Vodka are again joining forces for the 7th annual Tito’s Fiesta Mexicana. The highly anticipated and beloved annual local event will take place at Tito’s Tacos in Culver City on Friday, October 4 – on National Taco Day and National Vodka Day – from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM to raise funds for the Culver City Arts Foundation. Partygoers can enjoy Tito’s Tacos’ delicious award-winning tacos, burritos and flan, Tito’s Handmade Vodka’s specialty cocktails, and five hours of non-stop musical entertainment by new and returning world-class mariachi artists like Mariachi Juevenil Herencia Michoacana, heavy metal rockers Metalachi, the Grammy nominated all-female Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles and more. Additionally, guests will be treated to a colorful compilation of traditional Mexican folklórico dances throughout the event by Folk Revolución. The jam-packed day of lively activities will be orchestrated by Master of Ceremonies comedian Eric Schwartz, also known as “Smooth-E.”” Tito’s Tacos 2nd generation Co-Proprietor, Lynne Davidson, joins us with all the spirited details.

Pink’s Hot Dogs is a genuine Hollywood institution founded in 1939. Their 85 Anniversary will be celebrated this year in November.
“This landmark hot dog stand (still in it’s original configuration) serves over 1,200 hot dogs and 200 hamburgers a day. Pink’s was started in 1939 by 2nd generation proprietor Richard Pink’s parents, Paul and Betty Pink, with a pushcart they purchased for $50, with money they borrowed from Betty’s mother. The land on which the pushcart stood was leased by Paul and Betty for $15 per month. Hot dogs at that time were 10 cents and Cokes were a nickel. Pink’s offered curb service, and was lucky to sell 100 hot dogs a day.” Business is more robust these days typically with a fast-moving line. Pink’s Hot Dogs will again be one of the noteworthy participating restaurants in the “L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade” benefit on Saturday, October 5th on the UCLA Campus. Pink’s 2nd generation Top Dog, Richard Pink, is our guest with all the snappy details.

Manhattan Beach-based Chef David LeFevre of Fishing with Dynamite, MB Post, The Arthur J and soon-to-be AttaGirl, “a native of Madison, Wisconsin, developed his passion for cooking as a child by helping his Mother in the kitchen. He says, “I loved the food my mother made and realized that if I knew how to cook, I wouldn’t have to wait for someone else to cook for me.”” Chef David is one of the celebrity Host Chefs for the upcoming Manhattan Beach Food & Wine Festival in Manhattan Village set for the evenings of Friday, October 11th and Saturday , October 12th. We reel in Chef LeFevre from his busy kitchens to join us.

Our own Chef Andrew Gruel, the menu-maker behind the full-service Calico Fish House (in the Sunset Beach area of Huntington Beach) provides another timely and informative “Ask the Chef” segment where he responds to listeners’ thoughtful inquiries. Both November 5th Presidential candidates have proposed eliminating the Federal income tax on servers’ Tips/Gratuities. One Candidate has further suggested doing this in combination with a raise in the National Minimum Wage. What is the potential downside to this? Chef Andrew offers his informed perspective.

All of this and heaping helpings of extra deliciousness on this week’s not-to-miss show!

Good morning Southern California and welcome. If you're food obsessed you've come to the right place. Join us for the next two hours and you won't go away hungry. One of the first American culinary icons Julia Child said people who love to eat are always the best people. We agree. Live from the AMA 30K LAA studios at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, The SoCal Restaurant Show is on the air. Welcome back. It is The SoCal Restaurant Show and happily we're here with you every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until 12 noon right here on AMA 30K LAA, the home of Angels Baseball 2024 and you can also catch us on the AMA 30K LAA Angels app and the halos are on the road. Tonight is the third game in a four game set with the pesky Houston Astros and the halos are hoping to get back in the W column and gosh baseball season at least for the halos is definitely winding down. Next weekend is the concluding home stand and wouldn't you know it. It's more games with the Houston Astros and I just have to say along the way because we enjoyed watching Show Hay Otani for so many years here at Angel Stadium. He just actually takes your breath away. Can you believe it in the space of 24 hours? He hit four home runs absolutely unbelievable and he's got a cute dog too that little decoy. I'm Andy Harris the executive producer and co-host of the show. Glad to have you out there. My colleague chef Andrew Grool of his seafood chop house actually and seafood and chops. Calico Fish House in the Sunset Beach area of Huntington Beach on Pacific Coast Highway will be joining us with his usual as the chef segment a little later in the show and we're going to get a little political here this morning. Generally the only politics we talk about on the so-called restaurant show is food politics but both presidential candidates have proposed eliminating the federal tax on gratuities on tips and it sounds really good is a campaign pledge but is a working restaurateur chef Andrew perhaps has a little bit of a different point of view on that so we'll get into it and speaking about politics our only recommendation is is come November 5th you vote because you don't have a place at the table honestly if you don't vote again happy to have you out there thanks for spending part of your Saturday morning with us we absolutely do appreciate it one thing to keep in mind is is that we're very active on social media what we try to do with our social media is just give you added information and added visuals to what we do here for two hours on Saturday morning so particularly when we talk about a food product a restaurant a winery or a gourmet specialty food item what we do is have visuals in our social media also when we have a worthy cookbook author on the show just to give you more of a flavor for what they do we generally provide a recipe or two that they are willing to share with our audience just to give you a better idea of what that particular cookbook is all about so that's the background websites easy couldn't be easier actually it's so cal restaurant show calm no difficulty there Facebook is so cal restaurant show and send us a tweet or an X if you like at so cal restaurant and as we never get tired of saying and we're quite fond of Instagram to at so cal restaurant show for what we say is the best-in-food imagery for us and as they have been for the past 12 years we're proudly presented by Melissa's World Variety Produce and West Coast Prime Meats and talking about 12 years coming up in October believe it or not is the 12th anniversary of the so-called restaurant show being here on AM 8 30 KLAA so look forward to in October the second Saturday in October we're gonna be doing a special anniversary show and it is going to be a live remote so it's as many hints as I'm gonna give right now but just know it's going to be a very special show 12 years definitely something to celebrate now talking about celebrating as always we definitely have a jam-packed show for today if you listen to the show regularly you know earlier in the month I had the delight of being in the Finger Lakes region of New York for the international food wine and travel writers associations annual member conference and Finger Lakes for those of you that are not familiar with the area is definitely an emerging wine region in the country also known for some great cuisine because it is a rare area so there are dairies there are ranches there are family farmers ah and they're also family vintners and as you'll be hearing a little later in the show it is actually a very large area so definitely a lot to take in there and definitely some travel distances that are involved what I'm gonna be doing over the next few weeks is spotlighting some of my discoveries in the Finger Lakes because I really wasn't very familiar with the region before I started preparing for this conference I knew it was an emerging wine growing area they're known for one particular varietal that kind of is a showcase for the area and there's also a very rich history there because some of the founding vintners and winemakers were larger than life characters so this morning we're gonna get a good overview of the Finger Lakes as a wine region my colleague in the international food wine and travel writers association Dave Nershey who was one of the conference co-chairs for the Finger Lakes conference he also is the first vice president of the international food wine and travel writers association and in terms of his wine expertise he is a certified specialist of wine he knows the Finger Lakes region intimately and he will share some of that overview because as I say there's some events that change the course of winemaking and Finger Lakes over the years along with some very dramatic characters who Dave will share with you this morning definitely worth knowing about absolutely fascinating people that had very distinct ways they wanted to do things and we're pretty persistent about doing that and ultimately in one case we're definitely proven right with an army of detractors who actually were wrong we're also going to be talking about a great festival local festival that's coming up on national taco day which in case you didn't have that on your calendar that is Friday October 4th and this is the second actually the seventh annual Tito's Fiesta Mexicana which is taking place in Culver City at Tito's Tacos on Friday October 4th from three to nine raises money for the Culver City Arts Foundation and the co-owner of Tito's which is in the second generation of the founding family Lynn Davidson is going to be back with us talking about that then another big anniversary if you know hot dogs an institution in LA is Pink's Hot Dogs founded in 1939 celebrating their 85th anniversary come November we're going to be chatting about what they're doing and also how they use grassroots marketing to further their cause kind of fascinating then another in our series of continuing profiles of high profile celebrity chefs they're going to be part of the upcoming Manhattan Beach Food and Wine Festival on October 11th and October 12th Manhattan Beach's resident celebrity chef David LeFavor will be joining us you know him from fishing with dynamite MB Post and the Arthur J so again a lot on tap for this morning 80 is the SoCal restaurant show we're proudly presented by Melissa's World variety produce and West Coast Prime Eats we'll be right back with the Finger Lakes don't wander far
