(upbeat music) - Guys, are you ready for rapid fire? - Right on butt, right on cue, baby. Let's do it. - Right, let's do it. Fill in the blank after three games. Notre Dame's offense is blank. A mystery. It's a mystery. Honestly, they've been good. They've been bad. They've been, you know what I mean? It's a freaking mystery. That's why we're heading to see in week four against Miami. I need to see them build off of what they did when they were really good, right? And that was last week. So continue to run the ball with efficiency and with explosion. And then continue to work on the passing game, et cetera. But up to this point, Jess, it has literally been just a mystery to me as to what they're even attempting to do. - Yeah, my word is gonna closely tie along with yours. And it pains me to say this, but it's an inconsistent offense, right? Like it was an offense week one that did some, you know, a few things well in the passing game, did some things well in the run game, but found a way to win on the second week. It was a team that was kind of running the ball well, but you know, didn't really stick to it. And the passing game was just horrendous, but they continue to come back to it. And then all of a sudden this third game was just a complete exertion of dominance and, you know, running the ball all over the place, right? So there's an inconsistent identity. And that's why, you know, I hope these next couple of games, we can establish that consistency in identity because I think that goes a long way with fence. So yours was inconsistent. Vince's was a mystery. Is that right? 'Cause I had to step out there for a second. Mine's a work in progress, you know. That's, maybe it's a combination of the two of yours and I don't have to go too deep on it. And I know that nobody wants to hear it, but that's exactly what it is. And that's the way I think you have to look at this. You know, again, like whether you're talking about Riley Leonard trying to get incrementally better in the passing game and getting this offense to become better in the passing game, nobody thought that that's what it was going to be, but that's what it is. That's where you are right now. And you just have to deal with that. You know, like you've just got to get over the fact that it's not what anybody expected it was going to be, including Riley Leonard and Mike Dembrock and Marcus Freeman. That's not what they expected it was going to be, but it's what it is. And you just have to find a way to build from there because again, the schedule is forgiving enough. That doesn't mean that they can just bulldoze everybody and beat everybody, but the schedule is forgiving enough that it should allow them to continue to find themselves over the next few weeks, because again, you run the ball like you did last week against Purdue, which I think they can against anybody on the schedule, they'll be fine and they'll be able to grow into that, Riley Leonard to be able to grow into that. If you thought that that was going to be it for the Riley Leonard mentions, you were sorely mistaken. Over, under 29 and a half total touchdowns for Leonard at the end of the season. - I'm going to have to go under his best season at Duke. He had 33, 20 through the air, 13 on the ground. He's got four so far this season. I'd be more confident about this number if he didn't lay the goose egg. - Well, he did have the one against Northern Illinois, I take that back. He did not have any of against Texas A&M, I believe. So, getting off to the slow start, I do think he's naturally going to heat up, and I would see him on pace to probably have 14, 15 rushing touchdowns. I just don't know if the passing touchdowns are going to quite catch up when the other touchdowns are coming from, Jeremiah Love, Jadarion Price. I will go out and say that I think that tight end will have the most receiving touchdowns for this team this season. And again, I don't think that bodes well, bodes well when you're trying to really boost those passing touchdowns. So, long story short, I'm on the under. - This is really hard because obviously, the beginning of the season, I'm taking the over and I'm not even thinking twice a month. But the problem is we're three games in, he's sitting at four. - Yeah, just a number. - Just a number. - So, I mean, you're what, a quarter of the way through the season, I assume you're referring to regular season, Sean, not-- - Right, we don't include anything that comes out because as we found out, we can't assume what's going to come after well. - You can't. So, you're a quarter of the way through the season, you got four, you're on pace for 16. Like, I'm not saying that that's what's going to happen, but I mean, that's the reality. So, I got to take the under here, but I think he's got an opportunity to get the over, but if I was, you know, betting the mortgage or whatever, I guess I would probably take the under. I've got to, like, would 25 and a half, would that have been a better number? - Yeah, I would have been tempted to take the over at that point, yeah. - Yeah, I think my number is around 22. - I've got to think that he's going to end up with at least 10 touchdown passes by the time it's also-- - Okay. - I think it's going to be more than that, you know? I think that what's going to happen is it's finally going to happen, and then it's just going to start clicking from there. And, you know, the only question is going to be, do you have games like last week where he sits for an entire half or even for the entire fourth quarter? Like, I don't, I really, I really believe this. I think that there are only a couple of games that are going to be like one to two possession games by the end of the season, because Notre Dame's defense is that good. They're just not going to give up a ton of points. And I really feel like most of the teams on the vast majority of the teams on this schedule, almost every team on this schedule is going to have a hard time stopping Notre Dame's running game. I think he's going to have at least 15 rushing touchdowns when it's all said and done. And then, you know, so again, if I put it, if I give him 10 as my minimal number, that gets you to 25 right there. I'm under, but I think it's going to be closer to 30 than probably what it looks right now. - I think you're the most optimistic about 30 than it is tonight. (laughing) - I want to be, I really want to be, but- - It's just hard with those running backs. They're eating up a lot of touchdowns. - That's fair. - Yep, but you know, again, you know, like, Anthony Knapp doesn't bump into him last week. He gets off the Schneider and he hits Bo Collins and they get it started there already, but didn't quite happen that way. And that's the thing. I really, I agree with what Mike Denbrock said this week. They're just a play or a second here or there in their timing from hitting a couple of those. And once they do start hitting them, I think it's going to look, I think it's going to start to look a lot different for us. They got to get there. That's just, that's just optimism right now. I'm not guaranteeing that's going to happen. That's just what I think is going to happen, you know? Like it's, I think it'll, it'll start clicking sooner or later. - For some reason, Notre Dame pissed off the passing guy. For a whole new way to nug, it's gotta be Wendy's at participating US Wendy's. Barring injury to Leonard, do you buy or sell anyone but him starting at quarterback this season, Vince? Huge buy. He's the one that gives you the best chance to win. He's a buy now. You go on some sort of... Hold it, hold it. You need to look at the question because you answered it. Anyone but Riley Leonard starting at quarterback. You're just trying to confuse me after a real long day. This is a sell. This is a sell based on the way you started. You think Riley Leonard is gonna be the only starting quarterback. Yes, and you said barring injury. So it helps me. Borrowing injury to Leonard. Buy or sell anyone but him starting at quarterback. I feel like you did that to me on purpose. So I guess it's a sell. It's gonna be Riley Leonard the whole year. So it's a sell for me. I'll kind of give some more background to my thought process. Steve Angeli, what you think Steve Angeli can do in the passing game, just take your greatest vision of Steve Angeli and what you can do in the passing game. It does not sniff or come close to what Riley Leonard can do. Right now I'm a limited passing game and a guy who can make plays on his feet. It's just the realistic side of the story in my opinion. So that's where I'm gonna go with the sell on this one. Has Steve Angeli ever thrown for 2900 yards in a season? No, nope. Has Steve Angeli ever thrown 20 touchdown passes in a season? I mean, high school? We're talking college. Yes, that's right. The answer is yes. The answer is no to both. And regardless, this is the only downside to guys getting in like they did last week. Right, right. Because they're in there. Just stole the fire. Yeah, they're in there with no pressure. Yeah. You know, just lean. Yeah. And as Jesse said, Riley Leonard plays the whole first half. Mike Denbrock and Riley Leonard basically set up all these easy passes for Steve and Angeli. And everybody thinks, oh, he throws a pretty ball. That's Steve Angeli. We need that passing game. You know, the whole, the whole equation changes when if you make that move. And that's why Riley Leonard is going to stay and start every game he is healthy this season. Because look at the comments that Mike Denbrock made about Angeli that we talked about earlier this week. He was asked if he learned anything new about Steve Angeli and getting him to play. And he's like, no, I watched his bowl game. I watched him all spring. I watched him in fall camp. I watched him practice every day. I have learned nothing. I learned nothing new about Steve Angeli. He basically said Steve Angeli is who he is. And Steve Angeli is the number two quarterback. And that's what he will remain as long as Riley Leonard doesn't suffer some kind of injury that forces him out of a game. Yep, that's a perfect answer, too. The Denbrock answered? Yeah. Yeah, I know. I learned nothing. Right. Great. It was great. Because, like I said, it was something that-- And you know, and you know, it was from someone who was fishing because they wanted this big Steve Angeli compliment that they didn't get. Big headline. Yes. We know who it was, too. Big Twitter, big Twitter. Yeah. What's more surprising that Northern Illinois quarterback Ethan Hampton leads the nation in passing efficiency, or that Leonard ranks number 111? I think it's got to be the Northern Illinois quarterback leading the nation. I knew Riley Leonard wasn't going to be the best proficient quarterback. And am I surprised he's 111? Sure. But I'm also even more surprised that Ethan Hampton, the Matt quarterback for the Northern Illinois, who I forgot their mascot. But he leads the Huskies. The Huskies, the Northern Illinois Huskies leads the nation. But I mean, if we're being honest, like when I watched that game, the Northern game back, it's like, I can see it because the man every time they needed an efficient third down throw put that thing right on the money, it seemed like. So it goes along. But again, you would never think of a Matt quarterback as the guy telling the nation. I mean, they've played two games. So that one doesn't necessarily surprise me. Yeah, small sample size. It's the game that they played, though, right? They played against Notre Dame's defense. So he should not be where he is. But he is. I think I'm more surprised, probably, though, that Riley Leonard is 111. Like, if you'd have told me that at the beginning of the season, I'd be like, really? Really? Probably wouldn't have believed you. So I'll say that's my biggest surprise. Talk about having a great time for a bye for NIU with after the Notre Dame game. Yeah, I know. I mean, they are rightfully so, by the way. They are absolutely basking in everything that came from that win. And they haven't had to play a game yet. Like, they don't play again until Saturday. So, like, they are loving life right now. I think they start conference play on Saturday. I'm not even 100% sure on that. Yeah, they play both of them. Yeah. So, like, they are loving life right now and good for them. Yeah. No, that's exactly right. And I'm more surprised that Leonard Ranks is-- like, watching him play this season, I'm not surprised that that's where he ranks. But my expectation coming into the season, I would never have thought that he would rank that low. Like you said, all Ethan Hampton has had to do is play two games. So, it's somewhat surprising to me that he's at the top of it. But NIU does. They play Buffalo this week. Then they go to NC State next week. And I'm curious to see how that turns out. The way NC State's playing, I wouldn't put it past Northern Illinois to beat another, you know, to get another one of those, what do they call it? The dog bones or the bone yard? Bone yard wins. They already got Notre Dame's up there. It was up there quick. Yep. Riley Leonard, now this is not passing efficiency, but just in passing yards, again, I go back to that 2022 season as proof that Riley Leonard has been a passer in his college career. And that's part of why they brought him here. He ranked 53rd in the nation in passing yards two years ago. In that season, he was healthy, you know? So-- You didn't bring him here to be Joe Burro, though. That's right. You know what I mean? That was never the plan. You didn't bring him here to be Joe Burro, but you also didn't bring him here to be, you know, Malik Willis or Michael Vic, you know, where he's just, you know, running around and, you know, whatever else. But let's not forget, maybe Lamar Jackson was, I mean, he was a better passer of the quarterback. The year he won the Heisman and even the year after he won the Heisman at Louisville. But this is a guy who relied on his legs quite a bit as well. Those are his dynamic plays. Like, that's the one in the Heisman. Exactly. Not what he did with his arm. Exactly. Mike Denbrock compared Redshirt freshman Irish receiver KK Smith to Notre Dame Great Will Fuller this week. Good idea or bad idea to make it that comparison. Not great. I don't think it's a great idea. Now, if I'm Mike Denbrock, I would have said that to him behind closed doors. They're like, hey, man, when I watch the film, I see this guy in you. Like, I can see you being this guy. You know what I mean? I don't know that I would have done that to the media. I know coaches use the media to get things back to the players and things like that. But I just don't know if KK is really shown. He doesn't give me Will Fuller vibes yet. No. So I'm going to be more on the optimistic side of this equation. I think it's a good idea because it gives fans that kind of hope or that glimmer of light that, you know, maybe-- because Will Fuller was an exciting downfield home run, you know, catch the deep ball really fast. But also, it could go up into the ball type wide receiver. So to me, I think it's fun because it's something to look forward to down the road. You have a young guy. This is the comparison that he's giving him. It's someone that you, as a fan, know. You can kind of relate to and bring it into comparison. So I like it, but that's the more optimistic side of me. I don't like it because I agree with more of what Vince is saying, like you're saying, Jesse, it gives fans hope. To me, it gives fans undue expectation to place on a guy who, you know, obviously is-- he was injured all of last season, got healthy at the bowl game, and then didn't contribute in the bowl game. But all it does-- because you've already, with the way the passing game has struggled, there's already people who are starting to chirp about. Get all the young guys in there. Just get them down the field. They should have got over. Yeah, they should have all the rep because these other guys aren't getting it done. It's done. Already got that. And that's like when you start comparing a guy who hasn't done anything to a guy who played in the NFL and who was great in the NFL and hit until his career was derailed with injuries, all it does to me is you're just going to hear more, why isn't KK Smith on the field? Why isn't KK Smith on the field? Like Jordan Faison is probably going to come back this week. You know, like I am more anxious to see what a healthy Jordan Faison can do for this offense than I am KK Smith right now. Like, that's just where I am. Yeah, a whole 100%. Yeah, having Jordan Faison, another quick twitchy guy, short passes, open field is, you know, a place to this offense. KK Smith is a fast guy. We know that. But there are a lot of elements, a lot of other elements, to playing wide receiver consistently that he's got to show he can do. And again, like in production, everything else, most of the issues with production are on Riley Leonard right now. So for anyone who thinks they don't know that, we're just sitting here defending Riley Leonard, defending Riley Leonard. Most of the issues are on Riley Leonard. I can concede that and also say that I have confidence that he can and will ultimately get better in this offense over time. So the Miami Hurricanes, of course, the Irish are playing the Miami, Ohio Red Hawks this week. They were also supposed to play the Miami Hurricanes this season. The Hurricanes over scheduled by adding Florida A&M. They've already played them. They are 3 and 0. Are you guys glad the Hurricanes are not on the schedule? Actually, I am not glad because I would love to have some sort of redemption arc against a really good team potentially. At the beginning of the season, what I probably said, that I'm glad they're on the schedule. Yeah, because I think there was enough quality opponents and those mid-tier and lower-tier level opponents. But after the loss at NIU, I want to see a potential redemption of how are you against another one of the nation's top teams, a team that could go on and potentially win the ACC and via playoff team. So yeah, that's just kind of my outlook on it. I am not happy at all. I would have loved to see Notre Dame's defense humble Cam Ward a little bit. Why are you so anti-Cam Ward, by the way? Like what is a good dude? What do Cam Ward do? Oh, just like as a person, basically? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so I would have loved to see that. And look, it is always good when Notre Dame is good and Miami is good when they face off. And so I would have loved to-- I think, yes, that would have obviously helped Notre Dame strength the schedule, all of those different things. Yes, no doubt. I would have loved to see them on the schedule. I really would have. Yeah, and the ACC replaced Miami with Louisville. And I would rather see Miami than Louisville. Yeah, me too. It's been eight years since the Hurricanes came up here. It's been a while since they played-- Was that the game in the Bears Stadium? No, that was 2012. They came here in the disaster year, the 4 and 8 2016 season. And then, of course, Notre Dame went down to Hard Rock Stadium and just got their doors knocked off them by the hurricane. That was the last time they played. But it's been eight years since they've been here. And I would have loved to have seen them come up. I would rather have Miami coming up next week than Louisville coming up next week. Me too. Not disappointed that it's Louisville after everything that happened last year. And a chance for Notre Dame to redeem itself and all that stuff. But I would much rather see the Hurricanes, especially since, at least for right now, they are three and up. And it would be a good early season barometer, I think. I mean, Louisville will be to some extent as well. But I think Louisville would have been even better to have. So no player props listed on either FanDuel or DraftKings this week for the Notre Dame Miami. They probably don't know anything either. I know. I made up a few here. Well, Riley Leonard have more rushing or passing yards against the Red Hawks. I'm going to go passing hurts. Me too. Yeah, passing. I think so as well. I think so as well. I don't think he necessarily gets to 100 again, unless he busts off a 40-yarder and kind of kept half of it right there. I do hope that the game plan is closer to last week. And they're not just asking him to stand in the pocket like he did two weeks ago against Northern Illinois. But I think they'll have more passing yards as well. My breakdown of yards will come in a later question. Ooh, OK. Fill in the blank. Notre Dame's leading receiver against the Red Hawks will be blank. It'll be Bo Collins. I think he's shown up as the most trustworthy, dependable wide receiver in the eyes of Riley Leonard. And so I think that'll go a long way. I think Jen and Great House will have some plays here and there. But I just think that that's the guy Riley Leonard trusts the most right now. So when he's struggling, I think he has the most comfortability looking those way. Light it up. Hey, Irish Breakdown listeners. It's Urban Meyer. This fall, the game changes. Join me. Yeah, I agree with Jesse that it's going to be Bo Collins. He's the one that's really stepped up and kind of been that go-to guy for Riley Leonard. And I think I think Riley Leonard's going to remember that. You know what I mean? Like in this game, he's just going to look for five. And I think that he's going to be the leading guy. But for some reason, I just want to say Faison. I don't know why I have no reason. I just feel like he's more than ready to go for this game. I'm going Bo Collins as well. I think that he has been the go-to guy so far. Mitchell Evans is the guy that I've got kind of in the back of my mind is maybe even though they haven't thrown to the tight end a ton. I wonder if maybe we see a bit more of that this week. Because again, like when you just look at mismatches and stuff like that, a guy with Mitchell Evans size and what he can do. And I think Bo Collins gives him some mismatches as well. But so Collins is my number one. Mitchell Evans is my number two. Will Jeremiah Love and Jadarion Price, combined to have more total yards than Leonard? I just realized I left a word out of there in the question that I sent to you guys. So hopefully you got the gist. Will Love and Price, combined to have more total yards than Riley Leonard does? Mmm. This one's tough. This one's tough. Obviously, we think the run game is going to be paramount in this game. I think both guys could very easily get to 100 yards. So let's just say that they combine for 200 yards. I really hope that Riley Leonard has more than 200 yards. So I would say Riley Leonard. I went with Riley Leonard kind of largely off the same rationale. I think Price and Love will kind of be around that 100, maybe a little bit over, maybe a little bit under, between the two of them. But Riley Leonard should probably come close to 60 to 100 yards himself. And I expect him to be close to 200 through the air. So I think that combined, I would take Leonard for that reason. My numbers for Leonard are around 180 passing and around 60 rushing. So that's 240. And while I think Love and Price will both have big days, I mean, if they're going to get it, they both have to have big runs explosive, which I think that they will. But I think that 240 is going to be too much for them, especially if that's what Riley Leonard gets to. So all right. Notre Dame's point total in this game is 36 and 1/2. Miami's is 7 and 1/2. I want to save this for our prediction. Yeah, go ahead. I'm giving it away a little bit, I guess. But I'm going to take over on both. Me too. I said over on Notre Dame under on Miami. Oh, you are over. [LAUGHTER] First team to 10 points, you would have to bet $1 million on Notre Dame to win any money on this if they win. But Notre Dame has minus 3,000 to get to 10 points in this game first. Miami's odds are plus 750. Are you confident? Well, neither one of them-- none of us think that Miami is even going to-- well, I have them getting to 10, which will come up. Jesse doesn't even have them getting to 7. But I would not wager on this, is what I'm saying. No, it's not worth it either way. Right. Both teams to score 10 points. Yes is plus 140, no is minus 195. Not too day, my friend. No, no, no, no. I would hesitate to bet on anything when it comes to points to be perfectly honest with you. My prediction pushes me to say yes. So I guess I have to say yes. But I don't think that they're going to get 10 points, so-- Yeah. --they being Miami. Oh, you don't? OK. I mean, I predicted that they're going to, but I also feel like the defense just-- Pick one or the other. I know. I'm not going to, but I don't think they will. I know, it makes no sense. Don't make me rationalize myself right now. Here's the fence. Here's the fence sitting on it. I'm right on it, right on the fence. He's holding, no buying or selling. The odds that Notre Dame gets a shutout, plus 410. How much have you wagered on that, Jesse? Because I know you've put something on there. I did it last or against Northern Illinois, and I won't do it again. So smart. No touching. Good call. Because look, Kennedy earlacker could tackle Jay and Mickey again, and then they score. Like, that's what happened. Yeah. If the defense just plays normal, then they would have shut out Purdue. But they got points. And Vegas doesn't care how they got them. They still got them. So Vegas days in business. Yeah, man. Yeah, I agree. I'm not going for the shutout. All right, game prediction. Notre Dame's favored by 27 and 1/2. The game over under is 44 and 1/2. Who wants to go first? I'll go first, because I think I'm the only one that people probably haven't seen or heard yet. I'm going to go Notre Dame 44. Miami of Ohio 3. So I think Notre Dame covers the 27 and 1/2. They barely hit the over at 44 and 1/2. And my rationale is I think they're just going to be able to do what they did in the run game. I don't think it'll be as quite of a massacre as it was last week. I think Riley Leonard will probably play more into the third quarter. You might see him have some better past efficiency in the third quarter, really get things going. But my rationale defensively is this is an offense that's only scored 22 points. The between two opponents, that's 11 points a game. And that's not even against some of the top defenses in the country, like Notre Dame presents. And I said earlier in the show, they're horrible running the ball. And that's the one area that I think you can gouge Notre Dame or have a chance. I don't think passing the ball is going to go to your favor against Notre Dame's secondary. And I think they'll just get a garbage field goal to basically say they didn't get shut out. So 44 to 3 is my prediction. Well, I believe my prediction is out there. But I will get here as well. I have 42-10 with Notre Dame being victorious. 40 to 10. 42. 42 to 10. Yeah. Pretty sure that my prediction is well. I need to go check this. I haven't looked at the article that went out, so-- I haven't either. I need to-- I want to see if we have the exact same thing. Go ahead. But no, 42 to 10, because I'm predicting what should happen. I have no idea what's going to happen. Look, nobody saw Purdue coming, the 66 to 7. Nobody saw that coming. And if you say you did full of beans after the week that they had against Northern Illinois. And so what are they going to do in week four? You got me, but I'm telling you what should happen. Notre Dame is better across the board, roster to roster. Miami is very well coached. I've not hidden my love for Chuck Martin. I think he's a really good head coach. They were a double-digit win team last season. They've slipped a little bit this season, because they got stripped of some of their talent. They got hit in the transfer portal, et cetera, et cetera. And so they've slipped. And Notre Dame should handle this team. They should. I feel like Miami is probably going to be a top half Mac team, but maybe the bottom part of that top half. And Notre Dame shouldn't manhandle them. They should. Will they? Your guess is as good as mine, but I've got 42 to 10. That's my exact same score prediction as well. And I'm not even going to say it, because I said it against Northern Illinois a couple of weeks ago, and it just came back to bite me. I just feel like Jesse pretty much hit the nail on the head with my thought defensively for Notre Dame. Miami does not run the ball well. If you're going to be effective against Notre Dame's defense, you're going to have to hit some runs, like NIU did a couple of weeks ago. And even have some effectiveness, excuse me, like Texas A&M had in the season opener. That's not what Miami, Ohio has been so far. So unless they completely scheme something up and they pop a couple of runs that totally catch Notre Dame off guard, I just don't see that happening. And I see Notre Dame's front feasting on Gabbert. And I see the secondary doing a pretty good job, a really good job against Miami's wide receivers as well. And as for the offense, I do think that Notre Dame's offense will be better this week. And I'm not going to say that it's going to be an offense that's going to be firing on all cylinders, but I think they're going to run the ball really well. And I think that Riley Leonard will hit some developmental throws that look better than what we've seen so far. And so I've got 42 to 10. Did you have some data there, Jesse? Yeah, Jason Garrett is going to love this power run game that Notre Dame is going to present. And I think fans are going to get even more agitated the way that he is going to talk about it. But I guess the final thing I have. They line up here. And what they're going to do here is over under two and a half turnovers for the Notre Dame defense. I'm going to take the over. I think they get like two interceptions and maybe a fumble. Is that an official sports book over under three? No, just the one I just made up in my head. Oh, OK. I see at least two. I don't know if they'll go over that or not, though. I see two. All right, well, that is going to do it for this show. Good stuff, as always, guys. Great whiteboard to start us off.
