Vince Diderio will be along in a little bit. He's held up a little bit at the day job and will be around. We've got plenty that we can get to in the meantime before Vince gets here, Jess. I feel like I'm getting the short end of the stick here because Vince has Tardy. I have new equipment. I'm trying to make sure everything is good to go. I can bring my part to the show today, but I'm getting the grief and Vince isn't even here. Walking on shaky ground right now. Yeah. I mean, this is the show that we do without a live audience, but we still manage to tick people off. If you look at the YouTube comments that go up once we post the show on YouTube, I think we probably tick people off more with this show than any other show, it seems like. At least that's what the sample said last week. I don't know. Yeah, I think the non ability to kind of live heckle us or disagree with us really gets it. They like their comments to be seen now and heard now. And when we do this kind of recording of the countdown show, we don't get that. There's no live feedback. Jesse has bonus whiteboard that he's going to bring for today's countdown show. We're going to kind of save some of the meteor stuff, you know, the stuff where we're. We're going to bring Vince out of the bullpen to just let him like this show on fire and let him tick people off once he gets here, I think. But, you know, it's, it's one of those weeks 66 to 7 win last week over Purdue. A lot of people still not satisfied with that. We've talked about the quarterbacks all week and, you know, I get it. I get it. I think the quarterback is going in the right direction. The fact that he ran for 100 yards and scored three touchdowns last week says that and the fact that he was 11 of 16 and threw for over 100 yards and just one half a play would say that as well. And again, I'll kind of save Riley Leonard and, and, and the quarterback stuff for a little bit. But, you know, look, 362 rushing yards last week, 578 yards of total offense. How do you look at this team, Jess? Are they is Notre Dame officially a smash mouth offensive football team? Yeah, I think until further notice Notre Dame has to be a smash smash mouth football team. They are most effective with the, with the run game. I consider them to have a three headed monster in the backfield with all, all guys who are legitimate threats with their legs Riley Leonard Jeremiah love and Jadarion price. So to me, you have to do, you know, what's your good at and that's running the ball effectively downhill and then allow some of the other things to kind of develop, you know, behind the scenes essentially. You know, your shorter passing game and hopefully a ball into a deeper passing game like I understand people's complaints and worries about the downfield ball. And it is something that needs to be developed, you know, potentially for USC and, you know, a playoff run. But for now, you have to take what you're good at and continue to do it well. And they're not just smash mouth. They are, they're an electric offense. It's just that they're electric in a way that I think people aren't used to seeing, you know, this kind of throws back almost a little bit to those late 80s, early night, you know, almost like the Tony Rice type arrow when you had guys like Rocket Ismail and Ricky Waters and the Brooks brothers and, you know, all these different guys, you know, Jerome Betas was a little bit later, but the offense ran a little bit differently back then. And obviously offense has evolved a lot in the last 30 plus years and I think that that's, you know, why people are cringing still a little bit when you see the way this thing runs. But look, they've had nine runs in three games. They've had nine runs of 20 plus yards this season. We've seen a 48 year touchdown run. We've seen a 70 yard touchdown run. We've seen 30 plus yard touchdown runs. I mean, they keep taking them to the house. Jeremiah Love is on pace for over 1100 rushing yards this season. He's not even averaging 12 carries per game. He's just a little bit under 12, you know, one off like 35 carries. But he's not even at 12 carries per game and he's on pace for 1100 rushing yards. He's averaging eight yards. Every time Riley Leonard or Steve Angeli or whoever hands him the football. Jadarion price is averaging 7.7 yards per carry. Leonard himself over five yards per carry those three together, 5.9 yards per carry, you know, so again, I know the offense doesn't look exactly what everyone like what everyone wants it. Anyone wants it to look like and anytime you try to compliment it, they lost to Northern Illinois and look, they lost to Northern Illinois as we've said all week with a different game plan than what they had last week against Purdue. That's what it comes down to. If they had let Riley Leonard play like that, you know, that being last week against Purdue, if they had let Riley Leonard do those things, I have every confidence that they would have beaten Northern Illinois as well. What do you think? Yeah, I can't disagree with you. I think if Notre Dame stuck to running the ball against Northern Illinois and realizing that Riley Leonard wasn't, you know, making headway in that in the past game, I think that the outcome of the game could have been much different. They don't think they would have lost. And you know, a lot of people have set it and brought it up. Jeremiah Love only touched the ball once after he had that nice touchdown early in the second half that's just inexcusable for a guy that's averaging almost eight yards a pop and has a score to touchdown in every game so far. Devin Ford and Annaeus Williams, nothing against them, but they touched the ball more than Jeremiah Love touched the ball the rest of the way, and that is inexcusable. You just, he's obviously your best offensive player, your most electrifying offensive player. You've got to find ways to get him the ball. And now what they've got to do is find a way to take advantage of what they've got with this three-headed monster that you talked about with 362 rushing yards last week, given Purdue the worst loss that they have ever had in the history of their program. They've done it all. Riley Leonard hasn't thrown a touchdown pass yet, but the question I think becomes, how do they build off that? And you've brought some whiteboard with you. I have. You took a look at what the Green Bay Packers did with Malik Willis last week with how they approach things offensively in their game against the Indianapolis Colts. And they used, was it, was it all 21 personnel? Was there any 22? Was it like, what was it, what did it look like? Yeah, a lot of 21 personnel, a lot of 11 personnel, 12 personnel. But I guess the part that was really interesting to me is the way that they integrated the two back sets, and then really kind of, you know, simplified the game from Malik Malik Willis, because, listen, it's a completely different kind of game plan compared to Jordan Love, you know, you need to have Jordan Love, and someone like Malik Willis, who you just acquired as you backed up this season from Tennessee, right? So I thought the offensive coordinator for the Packers did a really good job with his game plan this week, and recognize, you know, what they're good at, what they wanted to accomplish against the Colts. And I think that's very similar to, you know, what Notre Dame has here. Again, talking about the 300 monster. How can we incorporate these guys who are just racking up the, you know, the yards on the ground for the Notre Dame offense. Yeah, so just let me know that you guys, you can see everything OK, right? Yeah. OK, so what I have here is 21 personnel and, you know, you would have, I just kind of have it in the middle of the field. And what you see in the defensive side here is, you know, four, four, four defensive linemen, three linebackers and a walk down kind of safety here so technically eight guys in the box. And this first play. This is actually a pass play and I think this is really cool because what you can do is have Jeremiah love over here so I'll put four and then Jadarion price would be over here. I think he's 24. Correct 24 24. Okay, so you have Jadarion price split out to the right. Jeremiah love split out to the left. So the first thing that you're going to do here is you're going to pull your right guard to the left. So it gives this kind of, you know, motion to the linebackers here. These three linebackers, they're keying on that. So they're kind of all naturally working downhill, at least a step or two this way, right? And so what Riley Leonard is going to do is he's going to open up, he's going to fake this handoff here. So this is, this is really technically an RPL look, but you have two running backs in the backfield. So you're going to fake this look, you get the defense kind of stepping this way. And then this is where I think it becomes really cool because you have Jeremiah love here in the backfield, who's a really good runner, but we know that they want to incorporate in the past game, right? And so after that, after the fake handoff, Jeremiah love is going to swing out to the field side here, basically on, you know, like a running back screen, essentially, but he's going opposite of this run motion. And then, right, so just to just for, you know, for the podcast listeners who maybe are listening later tonight or Saturday morning, the right guard is pulling to the left, the fake handoff is shown in that direction to the left. And Jeremiah love is lined up to Riley Leonard's left, but what he's going to do is swing around behind Leonard and Jadarion price back out toward the right flat, basically. Right. And so the next thing that becomes essential here is this up back, usually it'd be a tight end because they're going to be in 21 personnel since this is probably going to be something like Mitchell Evans, Eli Radin. Their job is to let this end man on the line of scrimmage go, and then try to seal off this kind of outside linebacker here while Jeremiah love is swinging out this way because he's, he's sealing the end man on the line of scrimmage. This defensive end is going to crash down there's no way he's going to have the ability, unless it's Michael Parsons to, you know, basically come out here and make a play once he recognizes backside backside screen to the running back so they're going to let him go. And then now you're outside wide receiver in this formation is essentially going to act as the lead blocker downfield so you want to fake the handoff to Jadarion price going left, Jeremiah love is going to basically do a backside, you know, screen. And this is where it's really cool too because right Leonard so has the option here so he can either flip it out to Jeremiah love, or you can just run a straight QB counter off of this as well, maybe this in man crashes down hard. Mitchell Evans seals the edge, but for some reason Leonard doesn't like the screen look to love he can keep it himself and kind of still have that lead blocker out here in front of them with the wide receiver so a lot of options here again this is why you can consider this the modern triple option offense but now if you add, you know, to back wide receivers you kind of have four options here you can fake the handoff. You can run it with Leonard or you can, you know, pitch it out to Jeremiah love coming out of the backyard so a really simple play that's quick hitting. And I think would be really effective given earnings running back. Good stuff a lot of different options as you said that doesn't look you know it's it's more modern triple option it gives Riley Leonard a lot of different things whatever he feels more comfortable with whatever he feels that look looks like a Notre Dame's block. Wide receivers have been such good blockers that I think you're going to get a great downfield block by, you know, whether it's Jaden Thomas or whoever it has to be out there in front of him him or Jeremiah love potentially depending on if he keeps it and goes that direction or swings it out to Jeremiah love and I do still think we didn't see much like we saw a couple jet sweep action or shovel pass type things last week against Purdue really still didn't see much in terms of the screen game which kind of surprises me a little bit again, you know, like when you consider just things to get Jeremiah love going and and and also involved Jeremiah love in the passing game a little bit more Vince is here. How you doing Vince. What up boys. How are we doing today? We're doing good. We're doing good Jesse just scribbling all over his whiteboard. There was some 21 personnel showing some different stuff so I have to go back and watch this because that like is vintage coach stuff right there. I'm all fired up just looking at it. Well, it's, it's your lucky day because we do have one more. Nice. Vince, I'm so glad that you're here. I was, I was telling people early on, I was getting grief because I have a new setup because I had to turn it on my equipment from the last job. And you were running behind and I feel like I was catching the short end of the situation. So what's your next, what's your next play, just do you need to clear all that stuff off or do you have a fresh board you're going to throw in there. Yeah, I have a fresh one. Let me know that fresh one pop up or is it still showing the old one. It did pop up, but unfortunately it looks like Vince has frozen up on us so I don't know what's going on with him right now. He might have to check back in here in a second. So, looks like we've got more 21 personnel two backs in the backfield once again. Yeah, this one is more of a run scheme though. So that last one I would consider, you know, a pass, pass scheme, maybe, you know, play action pass slash counter depending if rather than wants to keep it. But here's the, here's the second set. So again, this is, I just kind of put everything middle of the field. 21 personnel doesn't really matter what backs you have where, but I'll say for this play. I'd rather have Jeremiah love here, and I'd rather have gidarian price over here. So, again, you're going to have 21 personnel. And again, for the podcast people, right, Leonard, it's going to be a shotgun, gidarian price will be split out to his left. Here's where my level we split out to his right, and then the up back of the H back who would be, you know, Mitchell Evans, you know, I read in is going to be to the left, the gidarian price side. And he'll be kind of behind offset behind the left tackle but this is again a play I saw the Packers run against the cold thought it was really cool. And it gets both of these running backs in the run game so what's going to happen here is the left guard is going to pull to the right side. Let's take out the end man on the line of scrimmage, the H back Mitchell Evans will also pull and he'll kind of come off the butt here of the pulling guard and he'll wrap around and try to seal off this inside linebacker. And to me the most crucial block on this thing is going to be the wide receiver to the to the polling side or the side opposite of gidarian price. So I'm trying to seal off this end, kind of probably defensive back safety strung safety that's walked down to kind of help get eight people in the box here so this whole right side is sealed off. But the next important step is the action by the quarterback here. So what he's going to do is kind of reverse open here and then Jeremiah love is going to act like he's taking, you know, a jet sweep here off of the corner back so again, you're showing that action here to the right. You're going to send someone, you know, opposite of that action, fake a handoff, and the gidarian price is going to come off of that and have, you know, a nice kind of down downhill inside run. But again, this is two options here you can give it, you know, the quick hitter to Jeremiah love as a quarterback opens up on kind of like a jet sweep look this way. If you don't like that you can pick that handoff and give it to gidarian price, where you have this edge, you know, sealed off and again, with all of these looks, I think the other important part is right let me know if they can keep this himself if you want. You know fake essentially to hand off and have everything locked in front of him and kind of decide, you know, where he wants to go with the ball so again it's like that modern triple option. You're, you're, you're infusing your two running backs who have just been, you know, tremendous on the ground this season averaging eight and seven yards apart. We saw, we saw hints of some of the 21 and even some 22 last week, against Purdue. I do wonder if we continue to see more of that because it just feels like doing more of that leans into the strength of what this team is right now. It just be so hard to contain three guys who can all run the way that they're running right now so, yeah, so the passing game comes along there's, in my opinion, no shame on being a 70% run team. You know, especially as you're down shifting into games trying to control the clock, you know, late in the game in the fourth quarter. All right. Good stuff. Great stuff is always just appreciate you doing all that work on the whiteboard that's, it's very, very intriguing and again I think we're up. What happened there did Vince leave. There you go. You know how it goes hit the Vince go ahead and hit the, the proper. Screened is what there. There we go. Thank you. Bring it up the double shamrocks there on the screen. Again, really good stuff, Jess. You know, look 362 rushing yards and almost 600 yards of offense. Obviously was not good enough for some people 59 points from the offense. I mean, Vince, can we just, can we just call it a step in the right direction and still concede that the passing game is a work in progress right now. It's okay for both things to be true. I think that's the biggest thing, right? Like, we can all agree that if Notre Dame wants to contend for anything special that they need to get the downfield passing game going, and they need to get the intermediate passing game going Yes, of course, anybody that knows football knows that that needs to happen, but they also were dynamic offensively in the run game and that's okay to be true too. So like both things can be true and you can still win games. And to be honest with you, I think you can win about every game on your schedule, maybe except USC, although very interested to see, you know, how the USC game goes this weekend. Yeah, but yeah, but I'll tell you, it's okay for both things to be true. And I think that, look, we've seen almost three distinct offenses. It feels like in the first three games. So what are we going to see, you know, in the Miami game? What are we going to see? Are we going to see building off of week three? Are we going to see a regression to week two and to a degree week one. Like, what are we going to see if we see a building that then then we're good. Right. And again, I think both can be true at the same time. Yeah, it's it's tough just because going off what Vince was talking about there and Marcus Freeman said it earlier this week, we're going to do what it takes to win the game week to week, basically. And I get that you're going to tweak your game plan to an extent, but it feels like it's too much, especially when you've got so much newness because it's not just the quarterback, all the new offensive line. And now you've got two more new offensive linemen in the mix and all these new receivers who have come in and even inexperienced receivers who have also learned a new offense this year that like, there are just so many new variables that have been added to the mix. It just seems like swinging so drastically from week to week on what the offense is just seems like too much for everybody. Yeah, I would agree with that. And, you know, it's, I get that it's frustrating, you know, seeing a different kind of offense every week. And then also, you know, wondering kind of what's next. And I think it's fair to say, you know, you don't want your team to be one dimensional. I think a lot of people fear that down the road, the passing game is going to fight them against, you know, potential playoff team or a team of, you know, high caliber. And that's, that's fair to say I completely understand that but you can't just dwell on that now and allow it to, you know, influence games like it did against Northern Illinois, right? Like if you're not passing the ball well, there's no reason to force it when you're a really good running team just allow your team to run. You have a really good defense. I think that's the other part that people fail to realize as well like you, when you have, you know, maybe a deficient passing game. A good defense that keeps games close is also going to help you as well because you're not chasing points essentially right so right being a team that can run the ball. You should at least be in a one possession game. Right, so you should be at the very worst it should be a one maybe 10 point game just depending on, you know, what's going on, obviously. I think it's fair to maybe, you know, think about what happens if they find themselves in a hole and now you don't have, you know, a passing attack to get there but, again, my counter to that would be well you have a really good defense that is going to keep you relatively in a lot of close games. So, running the ball is okay. Like it's, it's a, it's a different formula to win games. But when you have the defense that their name has, I think it's okay to run the ball like this. And Vince, I've been waiting to save this example for a long time but you remember my senior year, we literally ran the ball every play against St Joe and our running back head over like 300 rushing yards and five touchdowns like if they can't stop it. Why do you don't need to do anything like away from it. Yeah. Right. That's, that's what nerd aid needs to do right now is just force teams to stop them in the in this run game before they start to resort more to the pass game. Although, although, you know, the counter point to that was maybe that was a lesson learned by the head coach from the sectional championship game the year before against Drew Tranquil when he got stopped once with that same running back. And all of a sudden with a 17 point lead to start decided he needed to start throwing the ball all over the place in the fourth quarter and lost the game. At the end of the day, you can just think you run the ball on fourth down at the end of the game to ice it, which ended up very keen for like a 70 yard touchdown. Right. So I will take full responsibility for that. There you go. But you're absolutely right. Look, there's there wary. Let me rephrase. Very few teams in the country are going to be able to stop Notre Dame's run game. Okay. I don't think anybody on their schedule can stop their run game. With that said, you're still going to need a pass game to compliment it so that you can't just, you know, load the box and all that. But I would also say, go ahead and load the box and see what happens. You know what I mean, I mean, I mean, they've been loading the box already produce loading the box last week. They were running a five two and they were bringing their safety down hard. Yeah. So like, go ahead. I would say, against most of the teams on the schedule. Now, to beat the upper echelon teams, you're obviously going to have to compliment it with a, with a pass game that doesn't necessarily need to be LSU 2019, but it does need to be, you know, something that's not on life support too. So, yes, that absolutely has to happen. But guess what, it is September 21. You need to have that today. You need to have that in December. That's when you need to have that. Look, and I know, I know people have accused us of being a Riley Leonard apologist. Why are we the only ones sticking up, you know, defending Riley Leonard and all this different stuff. I don't understand. I realize, I just, I guess it's hard for me to understand how people become so much prisoners of the moment, because, right, because as I've said, I don't know how many times in someone, you know, went on one of our shows and posted a comment when I was talking about, we've been talking about making incremental progress in the passing game this week. And, you know, they're like, you know, you shouldn't have to make incremental progress, you know, you bring in a quarterback who can't throw and you've got all these quarterbacks who can throw better and all this different stuff. Look, look at Riley Leonard's 2022 season. I realize he was injured last year, which we've talked about quite a bit and he wasn't the passer last year that he was in 2022. And a big part of that was the injury. And before you go, well, look at the games even before the injury. Well, again, he was doing some of the things that he's doing right now with his legs, Clemson and some of those others and leading them to wins before that Notre Dame game. But he had three 300 plus yard passing games at Duke in 2022. He had four other games where he passed for between 240 yards and 290 yards that same season. And as we've said, again and again and again. He threw for almost 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns. It's not like this guy has never been able to pass them all before. This is like, there's, there's a history that Notre Dame looked at when they made the decision to bring him in. That's the game film they were looking at. He has done it before. Obviously, it's a major issue that for whatever reason, it's a sticking point right now. And he can't do it, but stop acting like the guy has never been a passer of the football before he has. He almost had a 400 yard game. He had a 390 yard game a couple of years ago against Wake Forest. Like he almost passed for 400 yards. I realized watching the first three games of this season, you would never believe that that guy's almost through for 400 yards. But again, it's there. It's in his past for whatever reason. It's not there right now. But again, that's why you have to believe that with the makeup of your team, with two stud running backs like they've got. And basically, you know what, what maybe you call a running back playing quarterback, you've got three guys who can break away with the football on any given play. You can ride that against the schedule that's upcoming. And again, get incrementally better in the passing game and be better by the time November rolls around. 100% and, you know, not only has he been able to throw the ball in the past, and that is why he was brought to Notre Dame right incremental increases in efficiency and all that is you're allowed to get better as the season goes on. He didn't have a spring, right. He had mental reps in the spring. That's not the same as physical reps, right. He, you know, they basically shared a bunch of reps in the fall because they were trying to get four quarterbacks, you know, some legit time with the quote unquote varsity right on top first string, but you know, all those reps that went to CJ car and Kenny Minci and Steve Angeli were less reps than, you know, Riley Leonard got I mean that that's still legit as much as I want to see those other guys, it's still legit. At the end of the day. And I think we can all agree on this. And even the most ardent supporters of Steve Angeli or the, or the biggest opponent of Riley Leonard. And I feel like they have to admit that right now he gives this team the best chance to win the way it's put together right now. And that's what it comes down to. If, if they felt like somebody else, if they felt like one of the other guys Angeli is obviously the number two if they felt like Angeli gave him the better chance he'd be in there. I mean, if all you want to do is, is talk about numbers and passing, you know, and all that kind of stuff because Angeli throws a pretty ball when all he has to do is make one simple read. Leonard still had a better quarterback rating last week. Then Angeli did. Yeah, 93.8 versus 92.4 Leonard had a better quarterback rating last week. He's still through for almost 70% right completion percentage. If you leave him in for the entire game he's on pace to pass for over 200 yards and rush for for 200 yards. Think about that. No, that's exactly what I was going to say, how can you be upset with combined 400 yards. Like that's video games numbers where you're quarterbacking for 200 and run for 200. Let me ask you this because Jesse was, you know, drawn the whiteboard up and he was talking about the like getting the running backs and, you know, some, some cool things you can do in the 21 personnel. We have seen Mike den Brock basically scheme wide receivers open so far and obviously that's like the, you know, the biggest staple of the passing game so far is like screen passes to bow Collins it seems like, for the most part, you know, even though again, there have been some shots downfield that, you know, haven't haven't, you know, just misses and stuff like that. But like, we saw the short throw last week to Jaden Thomas, where, you know, they, they basically scheme that it's like one simple read for Riley Leonard we saw the third down pass against Texas A&M that was designed for Jaden great house if it's their throw it they did. And it was right on the money. I mean, do they just need to do some more of those simple things. You know, they don't always have to be within five yards of the line of scrimmage but just scheme up little things like that, you know, for Leonard and go look, you know, look at this right away if it's there, hit it, you know, because it just feels like, again, they, they just need to get him a little early momentum in the game with his, with his arm. What do you think this? Yeah, I would say, you know, the, the timing routes really come into play for Riley Leonard. It's a nice just kind of, I'd say timing and rhythm, essentially, where it's just kind of boom, boom, you know, we're getting the ball out. And I think that the best thing you can do for Riley Leonard on kind of these, you know, quick screens or plays, you can also have a built-in second read that is also, you know, read one, not there, read two, not there. I'm Riley Leonard. Let's, you know, tuck the ball down and get three or four yards, essentially, right? Like, I think that when his legs are, you know, effective like that. He doesn't have to take a long time with his, with his read to exemplify the game. Read one, read two. Okay, it's not there. Let me just try to get three or four yards or throw this ball out of bounds. I really think that's, you know, with how well they can run the ball. I think is, if you can pick up, you know, basically three to six yards in certain plays, you know, coming off the pass. That's really all that you need kind of maybe those third and five, third and six, third and four, where you just need, you know, a schematically good play to pick up the first down. Yeah, I'm totally fine with them trying to get him into rhythm and all of those different things is, look, we, it's not a physical issue. You know, maybe he has the yips or maybe it's a confidence thing or whatever the explanation is. When you sit down and you watch the film, he's going through his reads too quickly. He just, he just needs to take a breath, slow down and go through your reads and stay on your reads a little bit longer. He's coming off of them too quickly. And then you have the wide open eyes. When he's looking at those guys, they're not open. But if he stays on them a little bit longer or throws them open one of the two, he's going to have a heck of a lot more success. And those are all throws that he can make. And so it's just a matter of, hey, just need to take a breath. You need to relax. You need to go through your reads a little bit slower and things are going to open up for you. Well, see, and that's, that's why I have to wonder, even though I don't know if any of them are ever going to say this out loud, I do have to wonder between the injury. That he obviously had last year. And, you know, you've got a true freshman left tackle out there who, you know, and again, I'm not singling out one guy, but you've got a true freshman left tackle and an offensive line that's a much better run blocking line right now that it is. The combination of those two things, how that has sped up that internal clock and kind of causing something like people want to call it confidence. I have to think it's more that, you know, this than that. I think that's a great point. I think it's a really great point because this, look, the guys that won the starting jobs for Notre Dame on the offensive line got the jobs because of how good they are at run blocking. I mean, bottom line, that's why they got where they are. That's where their confidence is, that that's what they're really good at. And so guess whose confidence is really high when he runs the ball, right? They Leonard, and guess whose confidence isn't really high when he throws the ball because they're not great at past blocking, right? Like, it makes perfect sense. And I don't know that he would ever say it out loud and throw his guys under the bus because I don't think he's that kind of a guy, right? But you make a great point. That's absolutely part of it. You have to have confidence in what's happening in front of you. That's why, look, again, Jack Cone, right? The offensive line was a sieve when he was back there. And so he was kind of rushing through some things too. The difference is Jack Cone doesn't have the legs that Riley Leonard does. Right. He didn't have that escape shoot. That's right. Right. Yeah. I mean, like Ian Book had the ejector pod. Riley Leonard obviously has the ejector pod. And that's a big difference when you have that ability to take off. Oh, even Jelly doesn't have that ejector pod. And you know, and again, like, we don't have to go too far down that wormhole, but look at the sacks that he took last week. Yeah, I think it's pretty safe to say that Leonard escapes at least two, if not all three of those. I completely agree with that sentiment and, you know, and going back to Ian Book, it's like, sometimes he got frustrating because he would have a good pocket and would still eject out of it. You know what I mean? Yes. He wasn't behind the lines that Jack Cone and Riley Leonard are behind from a past blocking, you know, situation. And we would get frustrated. It's like, dude, you've got a beautiful pocket. Where are you going? And so I'm sure Riley Leonard would kill for some of those pockets. What do you think about? I mean, obviously you never want to see two guys get hurt on the lawn. You know, you never want to see two guys get hurt, but Craig is out the center. Pat Coogan is in, Billy Shrouthe is out for at least a little while, and Rocco Spindler is in. You know, again, like, especially with Spindler, I think we'll kind of see with Coogan, because it's center and not guard. You know, there were some obvious, some obvious issues he had when he was playing left guard last year, but along those lines, how do you feel about this line now in front of him any better any worse is, you know, specifically, I guess, from a, you know, like a past blocking standpoint. Yeah, I think that Notre Dame put out there the best past blocking, you know, past blocking offensive line that would be tailored to kind of Riley Leonard's dual, dual threat kind of quarterback style. And again, a team that needs to run the ball more, I feel like having Pat Coogan and Rocco Spindler actually plays into that, because, you know, Rocco Spindler is a very downhill physical runner, right? And so if Notre Dame was more of this kind of past centric, air it out, I would have more concern about Pat Coogan and Rocco Spindler stepping in, because that's kind of been, you know, their downfall, essentially, right? And so, for a team that is needs to run the ball more, in my opinion, and also, you know, run, run downhill power run, I think Pat Coogan and Rocco Spindler are better for that kind of situation, if they had to step in for guys that are out. I think that they actually may even be more run heavy because those guys are just better at run blocking, like, it's true Rocco Spindler is a beast when it comes to run, but run through a wall. Like, I mean, that's just what he's really good at and I'm not saying that Billy Shrath wasn't good at run blocking, he was more of a double edged sword, he was good at both, right, and now you've got Rocco in there who, you know, whether it's 70, 30, 60, 40, however you want to, you know, measure it. He's better at run blocking than he is past blocking, he just is, and as far as Pat Coogan is concerned, I think center is going to be a better move for him because the center is always double teaming with somebody. A guard, a guard, you're double teaming. Yeah, or you're by yourself, right? It's kind of an either or center, you're almost always double teaming. So, I think that helps Pat Coogan in that particular role, and I think he's 50, 50 when it comes to run blocking and past block, I'm not saying he's amazing at either one, but he'll be better off because of the doubles and, and things like that. So, yeah, I don't, I don't really think there's going to be that much of a drop off. I just think they got better at run blocking. Yeah. Yeah, great point, great point. I do want to talk about the defense because all the talk, I mean, Riley Leonard just consumed so much oxygen in this whole, in this whole thing, the past couple of weeks. That was a little bit like we're taking the defense for granted, but I mean, they're only giving up 12 points a game right now and the only touchdown that Purdue scored last week, of course, was a total, like, I think it was 49 to nothing when they gave up the big past play and all of Notre Dame's reserves are in there. It really felt to me guys, like, Al Golden, it didn't take much for him. You're like, he's got a chip on his shoulder anyway, didn't, didn't take much for him to put that chip on his players shoulders out there last week and they really went out. You know, kind of hunting for bear at Purdue. I love the fact that in the, you know, because, first of all, I love the fact that the coordinators come out there for press conferences. They're under this regime, right? Yeah, we never had that opportunity under the previous head coach. So I, first of all, I'll say that second of all, I love the fact that Al Golden was pissed off after the NIU game, and it wasn't like he was pissed off at the offense. He's like, we had a chance to win the game and we didn't do it. And so I love the fact that he had a massive chip on his shoulder going into the Purdue game and you're right. He did a wonderful job of sending that, sending that message to his players because they played with their hair on fire. They played with the confidence and the swagger that was missing the week before. Because this team is really freaking good on the defensive side of the ball, but in order to be elite, you got to play with a swagger. You got to play with a look, man, we're the best, and we're going to show you that we're the best. Like they played with that this past Saturday, they were lacking that the Saturday before. I definitely think that the defense is the tone settered for this team, and that was kind of what was missing against Northern Illinois game. It kind of felt like they were going through the motions, not playing with that swagger and not setting the tone. Like Vince was alluding to, but, you know, for a defense, it gives up 12 points a game. It allows your offense to, even on their, you know, on their worst day, still be in, you know, a game essentially, right? And so that's the benefit that this no-name offense has. And, you know, it's kind of crazy because all we talk about is Riley Leonard, Steven, Jelly, and the offense, but the only reason that we're, you know, granted that, I guess, luxury is because of how good the defense is at the end of the day. It's almost like an afterthought because it's like, okay, yeah, the defense is, you know, going to do what it needs to, essentially. When I get it, the defense isn't perfect. You know, they've had some kind of miscues here and there, but, you know, overall, big picture, you can't be upset about a defense that's giving up only 12 points a game. Like, you're the no-name offense, you know, getting more than 12 points a game should not be a relatively hard task. Well, look, you can, you know, you can talk about schedules and all this different, but Conor Wigman was horrible in the, in the first game against Texas A&M. And a lot of that was because Notre Dame made him look horrible. They came back the next week and put 52 points on the board. A&M did against McNeese and you can say, okay, it's McNeese. Well, okay, it's Northern Illinois, you know, like Notre Dame should have. And then last week, without Conor Wigman, their backup quarterback is in and they go on the road and they score 33 points against Florida. And again, you can say, well, Florida sucks. It's still an SEC team and it's still a road game and it's still Florida should be better than Northern Illinois, you know, so like what, what Al Golden's defense has done against each of these teams so far. It's just, I just feel like and Jesse hit it in his explanation there. If they play like they did last week, it shouldn't, like all the offense really has got got to do is get you a couple touchdowns and you should win the game every week. I feel confident if they get 20 points that it's pretty much going to be the first team, first team to 20 should win a Notre Dame game. I agree. Completely against every offense except maybe USC, but I don't know what they look like come November, but every other offense. Yeah, 100%. I feel very good about that. And again, like you said, obviously that wasn't the case against Northern Illinois, but again, Notre Dame played a completely different looking offense than it did in week one against A&M and then it did in week three against Purdue. And Al Golden was just flat ticked off because they gave up 16 points, they needed to give up 13 points, and that's what ticked him off, you know, like the, that final three points. And, you know, again, like, not wrong lesson learned that they showed last week. I think is going to tell us a lot guys, you know, as you look at it because Notre Dame failed the test of handling success obviously against Northern Illinois two weeks ago. Does it make you uneasy going into this game or did last week put it to rest for you, Jess? No, I'm honestly, I'm not going to, I'm going to feel uneasy the rest of the season. There's never been, there's never been consistency amongst Marcus Freeman and, you know, making me feel not uneasy in his first three seasons. And so, you know, losing that game and getting that again quote unquote molding out of the way I'm going to be uneasy the rest of the season because, you know, my expectations and goals for this team were to make the play off. So, you know, after losing to Northern Illinois, I feel like any game they can lose at this point. So, there's no uneasiness. The only uneasiness I have is after the game is over. And they win that game and they have to be uneasy about the next game, essentially. Night. Hey, Irish Breakdown listeners, it's Urban Meyer. This fall, the game changes. So, subscribe to Throwbacks on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get podcasts. Listen, that's a fair assessment, man. I said after the Northern Illinois game, it's one week at a time at this point. Yeah. Nothing that happened last week makes me think any different, right? I mean, they were a different game. There's no carryover right now. There's no carryover that, you know, you can't claim that until they string together about four or five of them, I think. And we're a ways away from that, right? I mean, they're on a one-game win streak right now. And so we need to see a heck of a lot more from this team to, again, we're not talking about playoffs. We're not talking about double-digit win season. We're not talking about any of that stuff right now. We're talking about winning your third game. Like that's the absolute most important thing. And how did you win that third game? Did you win 14, 13? Or did you win 66 to 7? You know what I mean? Like, what is this going to look like? And I think that's we're all going to be sitting with bated breath the entire time we're watching this game. You know, especially, look, it's their second home game. They look like garbage, their first home game. Is that a problem? Like, is the home, like, can you not play at home? Like, what's the deal here? I mean, we're back two years ago, basically. That's what I'm saying. Like, hey, Martin's frame, you can get him up for the big road games. Can you get him up for the crappy home games? Like, you know, again, it's that roller coaster, right? So I have zero confidence, but I also have, like, zero fear. Like, I'm kind of in the middle someplace and it's like, let's see what happens. I have some confidence. I put it at a three, probably, just because what I like is what we've seen for the last week is like a more pissed off looking. And you know, like a more determined kind of look out of everyone. Now, you shouldn't have to be pushed into that where, you know, it shouldn't take a loss to Northern Illinois to find that but that's where we are right now. And so I at least like it that it, you know, we were talking about chips on shoulders and all that different kind of stuff and it at least looks like that's how they're playing right now. But again, need to see it. Two weeks in a row tomorrow, obviously being the second week in a row, then we need to see it three weeks in a row. We've got to see it to believe it, though, at this point, 100% because it's completely fair. Anytime you lose at home to a Mac team. I think you got to question everything the rest of the way. So sad, but so true. I know. So now you do have another Mac team and it's Miami, Ohio. Before we get specifically into them, I'm going to throw this quiz up here for you pop quiz for you guys. Miami, Ohio was known as the cradle of coaches. Who can tell me one famous head coach who came through Miami, Ohio, go. Who said, who said Porsegen? Vince? I did. What did you say, Jess? Bo Schambekler, Sean McVay. Sean McVay was going to be my next one. Nice. Nice. Jesse's been looking at the game notes. Phil, very well good. No, I saw the stat earlier in the week, believe it or not. He's looking at something. You got to see the reflection in your glasses. Woody Hayes, the Ohio State. That's what's crazy is like Notre Dame, Araparsi, Michigan, Bo Schambekler, Ohio State, Woody Hayes, all came through. It's actually Ohio. Have you guys ever been to that stadium before? Never have. No. So on the one end of the stadium where you walk in, they've got statues of all the famous coaches. And it's really actually pretty stinking cool. It says cradle of coaches and it's got, you know, the life size statues of all these guys. And yeah, it's a pretty cool setup. Sean McVay is going to be the latest one to enter the cradle of coaches, the Los Angeles Rams. He's had his Super Bowl hit. That's you up there. Yeah, Super Bowl winning. Yeah, what up there? Has it? Maybe the maybe the note in Miami's game notes is old. It looks like it. Yeah, maybe that's it. It made it look like the way I read it. It was going to happen like during something like there's going to be a syrup. Maybe don't. I don't know. I mean, you're probably right. You probably are there. When were we there? We were there, not this past summer, but the summer before. And I'm pretty sure his, his statue was up there. Okay. I believe you. I didn't realize they put it up there. Oh, you know, like I said, based on the notes, there's a big section about it. Of course. Yeah, I'm sure. But Chuck Martin is the current Miami Red Hawks head coach. He's already brought a Miami team back here to Notre Dame. It's already been seven years since that Notre Dame Miami Ohio game and the fighting average smoked the Red Hawks and that he's, you know, quirky, funny guy. You know, I'm a little bit over the storyline, I think, because to me, this is far less about Chuck Martin, you know, Martin in a homecoming is it is about can Notre Dame smell blood in the water and and pounce on it, you know, exactly. Look, I love Chuck Martin. I think he's one of the better coaches that has come through Notre Dame, to be honest with assistant coaches, right? I was a big Chuck Martin fan. I remember, you know, because he took over for, you know, Brian Kelly. Obviously at Grand Valley State won some national titles and all of that and everybody was speculating when he come to Notre Dame and he finally did, you know, a few years into it. I was always a big Chuck Martin fan. And he's had opportunities to leave Miami and he stays and he, he's built a program there, man, like they've got the best facilities in the Mac. I'm not sure how high that bar is, but they've got beautiful facilities. They've got a beautiful stadium and he's happy there. And I love it. I think he's doing a fantastic job. It's it's feels like they dipped a little bit this year, you know, coming off the last year because they kind of got cherry picked a little bit from, you know, other schools and the transfer portal and all that kicker to Alabama, famously. Yeah. But yeah, I mean, when you win that, the best kicker in the country awards, somebody's going to come looking for you and Alabama was that team but, but yeah, I think he's done a fantastic job there but you're absolutely right. This is not about Chuck Martin. This is about Notre Dame and whether they can build on last week. Yeah, I agree with a lot of what Vince was saying. Chuck Martin obviously comes, you know, had some stops and a route that went through Notre Dame, but you know, a lot of people do. And basically he was a part of the Brian Kelly era, and you could say that pretty much everyone in the Brian Kelly era is gone. This is now the Marcus era. It's his coaches, his staff, his players. And so while it's a good story. It's, that's all it is. Notre Dame just needs to, you know, handle it. And I'm sure it's a really cool experience for Chuck Martin. He said it before that Notre Dame is the best venue in the world to play at. So I'm sure that's going to be something good for him and something that he'll feed into his players to appreciate the moment. But, you know, once it's time Notre Dame needs to handle business and not allow, you know, what happened against the noise to happen again with Miami, Ohio. Yeah, nice paycheck for Miami as well. I mean, that's why, you know, that's why they, this will be the 13th power for team they've played in the last five years they're 0 and 2 with losses to power for teams Northwestern and Cincinnati. They're two and 10 in the previous 12 and it's interesting that those two teams they play Northwestern and Cincinnati, most regularly, that's, that's the two wins that they have in the stretch against power five. I was going to say, because when they beat Cincinnati two seasons ago Cincinnati wasn't a power for team yet. Ah, that's true. But they beat them literally the last year. But of course they count them now. Yeah, so even think about that. You're right. You're right. So they weren't power for then. Yeah, they were still group of five. That's very true. That is still a huge win for Miami of Ohio. Miami of Ohio should not be beating Cincinnati. Right. I mean, they should not be there, both in the Cincinnati area. They have obviously a rivalry. Miami of Ohio should not be winning that game. No, they did. Should also mention, by the way, Gus Ragland is the Miami Red Hawks quarterbacks coach. He was on the staff here as an analyst and then a graduate assistant from 2019 through 2022 before he went back to Miami to become the quarterback coach. He was the quarterback for the Red Hawks for Chuck Martin in 2017 when they played here at Notre Dame. So an interesting little little connection there. But again, it's not about that. It's not, but it's still a cool story. Yeah. And there's obviously, yeah, a lot of respect from Chuck Martin for Notre Dame and I'm glad to be saying all the right things obviously so. They are not a good running team, 64 yards through two games, 64 total rushing yards and scored a total of 22 points. But they throw the ball around a little bit. Brett Gabbard is the quarterback right now. And here's some thoughts from Marcus Freeman on him. He is, he is a competitive individual. He really runs the offense well. He's experienced. I went back to 2019. We played him when I was at Cincinnati his freshman year. And he is, he throws a really good deep ball and does a really good job of taking care of the football. You know, I don't know if he's run as much as he has in the past, but I would assume, you know, this game that he's going to do whatever it takes to try to give his offense a chance to have success. So we're planning for him to run the ball, throw the ball, but he is an experienced quarterback that it's going to be difficult to confuse. We're going to have to really play well on defense versus him. So I hadn't done the math before Marcus Freeman said 2019 when he was a freshman, this is Gabbard sixth year for a little bit. That's right. That's the experience. All right. He also got to go ahead. Time for my negative day. That is in case everyone was wondering, Elaine Gabbard's brother, Brett Gabbard, you know, former NFL quarterback. And one of those two won the gene lottery, the gene lottery. Just FYI. If you Google a picture of the two of them together, you'll see what I'm talking about. Okay. Unfortunately, Brett was the, the lower end of that one. Yeah, but, but he got, he got the brains and the other brother got the brawn. Let's just put it that way. So, so Brett is a very smart quarterback when it comes to football, you know, he knows where to put the ball. You know, he doesn't have all the, the God given gifts that his brother had, but he's also a very intelligent football player. So, you know, that can be just as dangerous, obviously. So Notre Dame is going to have to be on their toes. They're going to have to tackle in space. They're going to have to, you know, not let a guy get turned loose, you know, that kind of stuff in order to be successful against this offense. Yeah, I don't think they're going to have a huge issue with it, but a smart guy like that can give you fifth. Well, yeah, because I mean, that's the other side of it. They've only rushed for 64 yards. He's thrown for 583 yards in two games. So he's almost averaging 300 a game. Again, they're not scoring a lot of points either way, but they're go to guy for, for those who, you know, like assume most of our listeners will be watching. He's number 15, Kate McDonald, 16 receptions through two games for 240 yards and a touchdown. Feels like him. And they're running back Kevin Davis who wears number eight, who's got nine catches, not a whole lot of carries, but like those two seem to be the primary guys that Gabbard is going to want to look for Saturday afternoon. Yeah, for sure. But I think this plays into Notre Dame's hands because they are over talented in the secondary. And I think if you're going to expose a Notre Dame team, especially with some of the injuries that they have on the defensive front. Attacking them in the run game is kind of where you'd want to make your hay against Notre Dame. So as long as Notre Dame can, like Vince said, control kind of the flats or the perimeters and make good open field tackles and forced, you know, Gabbard to have to really work the ball down field. I think that's going to play into Notre Dame's favor. And, you know, you know, all go on is going to be bringing, you know, pressure, five men, six men stunts. So anything that's trying to develop down field is just not going to go well as that pass rush is getting home. They have sacked. He's been sacked seven times through two games as well. And again, I mean, that's going to happen even more often when you don't have a running game that you can lean on and you've got to rely on the past game. But again, I feel like that plays into Notre Dame's favor pretty greatly between the pass rush and the secondary and just the whole thing. I think it's a very, very favorable matchup for Notre Dame. Notre Dame's defense, Naomi's defense, allowing both 182 rushing yards and 182 passing yards per game. So, right down the middle in terms of what they're allowing is what they're allowing balance. Yeah, very balanced defense, but that rushing number is alarmingly high, especially at the fact that it's Northwestern and Cincinnati doing it. Everyone, everyone prepared now, you know, don't, don't, don't look for all these passing yards again and get upset when they, you know, have probably close to 300 rushing yards again by the end of the game. Well, look, if you are attempting to, you know, predict how this game is going to go right or if you're attempting to coach this game and what your philosophy or your game plan is going to be. Well, what Notre Dame did last week against Purdue, why would you not go into this game with the exact same game plan, like, recycle, let's go, we're running the ball like you're not going to stop us from running the ball. And I'm sure that they'll have, look, there were opportunities in the Purdue game to throw the ball and they missed some of them and they hit some of them. They'll be opportunities for a letter to hit some of them and we'll see if he does, right, but the primary focus in this game I hate to break into people. It's going to be for Notre Dame to run the football. Why would it not be. And assuming they win assuming they take care of business in a, you know, what I would call a pretty comfortable fashion. There's still going to be plenty of people who are going to come out of this game because there's nothing they do enough because people expect to wave a magic wand and all of a sudden, Riley Leonard's going to be slinging the ball all over the field. Well, and I think Vince kind of hinted at it earlier, it's just, you know, there's still that dynamic of OC and quarterback who are in this marriage, you know, very early on, and Mike Dan Brock I thought was very honest and open and, and Riley Leonard too and I think people maybe have criticized them but there's just plays that aren't going to work so throw them out and build off of the plays that Riley Leonard is good at but because he missed some of that time in the spring, those things didn't quite come together as quickly as they probably should have in the fall so that's the part that I think is that that marriage that little bond between, you know, Mike Dan Brock and Riley Leonard is just going to continue to get better and better and that's really when this offense is going to hit its full stride. Yeah, and I mean, like, if last week was really kind of a reset, you can start with those plays, but then that doesn't mean you're limited to those plays you can build off that by continuing to add more things that he's got to come up with. That's what I was kind of talking about too is Stephen Jelly got the groove on Riley Leonard's labor in the second half because those safeties were walking down, you know, those passes were just nice playoffs because the safety was walking down because Notre Dame was running the hell out of the ball in the entire first half and so it was easy to hit some of those man to man when the safety is crashing down in the box because there's no over the top out. Right, so I generally just walk into the end zone. Yeah. Yeah. So much. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. Did you know a 2018 study showed half of prenatal vitamins tested had unacceptable levels of heavy metals?
