Notre Dame Football We In Or We Out Questions - Miami Redhawks Week

Irish Breakdown answers subscriber "We In/We Out" questions from IB's New Champions Lounge. Some of today's questions include:

  • We In or We Out: Notre Dame will not forget the NIU game for the rest of the season, “showing up” and winning with gusto. Related: Should NIU finish the season ranked (#23 now), the CFP Committee will regard the early-season Irish defeat as a “good loss.” * ND’s offense does NOT need to hurry to demonstrate a good passing game because we can easily win all our games between now and USC without it. In or Out?
  • In or Out: Riley Leonard’s well-documented issues throwing the football down the field are primarily due to a fixable lack of confidence.
  • In or Out: ND’s offense will end this year with similar productivity to what LSU had under Mike Denbrock in 2022.
  • In or Out: ND’s re-shuffled offensive line will end up as good or better than our initial starting OL have been by the end of the year.
  • In or Out: By game 8, the pass-rush duo of Boubacar Traore and Bryce Young will emerge as a force on a national level.
  • BONUS WBB: Kate Koval will establish herself as a real inside/outside threat while Maddy Westbeld recovers from her foot surgery. We in or We out? * A true #1 WR will emerge for Notre Dame by the end of the season, roughly defined as “numbers equivalent to an All-Conference P4 WR (any team)”. In or Out?
  • We in or We out: Riley Leonard has a fixed mindset and is unable to get better because he believes that talent is given by God and success has little to do with hard work and learning. Either you got “it” or you don’t. Therefore, he will not improve as he plays more, practices more, and gets more comfortable with his new system, new coaches, and new receivers. Get used to it. * We In/We Out: Riley Leonard will be over 26 touchdown passes by the end of the regular season? * We in/ We out: Jaden Greathouse will become the Alpha Dog WR We expected him to be and lead the team in catches, yards or touchdowns ( take your pick on those 3 or all) by season’s end. * We in/ We out: By the time he’s done at ND, CJ Carr will clearly be one of the best QB’S to play at ND since Joe Montana and be invited to NYC for the Heisman ceremony with a shot to win. * Notre Dame will have three more games like last week, score wise, this season. * Anthonie Knapp will move back inside as an interior lineman with Guerby Lambert waiting in the wings for next season? * We in / We out: Jordan Faison’s speed gives offense a spark on return from injury against Miami OH, catches at least 2 big play passes for 20+ yards. * We In/We Out: Beaux Collins will go over a 80 yards receiving with on long TD this Saturday. Riley will be 5-9 with balls traveling at least 15 yards in the air. * We In/Out: Bryce Young is going to be the most productive big end at ND by the end of the season in terms of impact plays (sacks, tfls, etc).

Oh, man. We in, we out. And it's not a great one question. Salty says Notre Dame will not forget the Northern Illinois game for the rest of the season, showing up and winning with gusto related should NIU finish the season ranked number 23 now. The college football playoff committee will regard the early season Irish defeat as a quote unquote good loss. We in or we out on all that. And on the first part, I think that Notre Dame losing to NIU will be a chip on their shoulder throughout the entire season. And again, something that the coaching staff and the players can draw back to. You know, when, when kind of realizing, you know, that that was, that was our one opportunity to really not play our best, right? We want to accomplish the goals that we have set out for, you know, our backs are up against the wall and we have, you know, basically to be perfect the rest of the way. So I do think it's something that they won't forget and it's going to allow them to just to play better and just to be more probably disciplines throughout the rest of the season as well. Just kind of, you know, not allowing that kind of gameplay to sneak in again and then should the second part of this question, I don't think that anything will, you know, relatively deemed as a good loss. I mean, it's Notre Dame against a Mac opponent at home. You should be able to take care of business, whether you won that game by one point or 20 points. So I don't, I think NIU being ranked definitely helps, but I don't think it'll ever be termed a good loss. Yeah. Like, like Bubs, Bubs was, was saying that is not a good loss. I mean, right now, of course, it's not a good loss. But to Salty's point, they run the table and they're sitting there at the end of the season, undefeated as the highest ranked group of five team. And if that ends up being Notre Dame's only loss, then it won't look nearly as bad in the eyes of the playoff that, you know, the selection committee, as if Northern Illinois is sitting there with three losses at the end of the season, because if they've got three losses, at least two of them are going to be to other Mac teams, you know, because I think they still play NC State and then they've got their Mac schedule coming up. So that's, that's kind of where they are. And I do think just kind of, again, just, just what we've seen so far. I think there's, there's a bit more of a chip on the shoulders of Marcus Freeman and his players since that Northern Illinois loss. I think that they have taken that and channeled it in the right direction so far and we'll get more of an idea on that this weekend, but I would be in on that as well. Okay, we got a handful, whoa, from played like a champion today. In or out Notre Dame's offense does not need to hurry to demonstrate a good passing game because we can easily win all our games between now and USC without it. What do you think about that one? I'm in on no need to hurry, you know, the demonstration of a good passing game, but I'm out on the rationale of, you know, we can easily win our games between now and USC without it like, I just think it simply needs to be put. They are a run first team and they are really good at running the ball. And so I think that's, you know, they don't need to demonstrate this prolific passing attack when they have a prolific rushing attack, just let the passing kind of come along and be something that, you know, as necessary, or an as needed basis, right? Maybe you need to pick up, you know, a third and long, or maybe you're trying to, you know, catch a team off guard on an early down situation, you know, whatever it might be, pass should never be the first thought, this is a run first team and there's nothing. There's nothing wrong with that like a scoring offense is a scoring offense, no matter if you're running the ball or passing the ball. Yeah, so like Joe is his way out, he says the maximum out that can be out like, Joe, if you're in a hurry, like if you think that the passing game is going to materialize like if that's why you're so far out. You said it before. The passing game is not just going to magically Riley Leonard's not going to go out there Saturday and start throwing for 300 350 yards and that kind of thing, you know, like, and he's not just going to start hitting the receiver's right and left. They can make incremental progress, and that's really all you're looking for at this point from where it is right now. If you expect a magic wand to be waived, you know, again, they're just going to become this pass happy passing machine that's just throwing the ball all over the place that's not going to happen so I think you kind of have to keep your expectations in line with reality because like Jesse said, they're a really good running team, they need to start with that and continue to make incremental progress in the passing game as the season goes along. Next question Riley Leonard's well documented issues throwing the football down the field or primarily due to a fixable lack of confidence. I would say I'm out on that I just think there's, I think it's primarily due to a fixable. You know, just kind of overall scheme issue I guess I would say like, if you know you can get Riley Leonard moving with his feet I think naturally he gains, you know, just his kind of football awareness goes up and his passing game naturally will just kind of tend to increase. But I still think you have to play within the limits of Riley Leonard I don't, you know, again I don't know why everyone wants just these deep downfield bombs like they can still run an efficient offense that doesn't necessarily, you know, mean they're throwing 40 50 yard, you know, touchdown passes at the end of the day so I just think there was, you know, Riley Leonard only had, you didn't have the spring ball, you still kind of recovering over summer. And I think it's true real time to, you know, run these plays was fall camp. And so again, it's not what people want to hear, but these games are kind of his, his quote unquote practice reps essentially right and so there still are some things to iron out and that's why I'm saying, I think he can progressively get the passing game, you know, to a point by the end of the season that they can use it as a legitimate complement weapon to their running game. Yeah, I mean, like decaf, not nearly as patient the kids been playing football for four years I mean he's been playing football for longer than that. I don't think it's an excuse. Look, it's really to me, you know, look, I'm not a, I'm not a psychologist, I don't know if it's a fixable lack of confidence like I don't know if it's a lack of confidence. What he can take is like the things he said, the things Mike Denbrook has said the things Marcus Freeman has said, you know, a lot of that seems to be just sort of getting, you know, getting used to this new system and everyone around him for whatever reason. There has not been a complete level of confidence the way even Riley Leonard talked about it for, you know, what, what amount of time he did get to practice in the spring. He talked like, well, the system that that that I'm in here isn't that different than the one that I was in it Duke so I don't think it's going to take me that much time. All I can keep going back to, you know, like, he's been a he's been a more than serviceable power five college passer just two years ago when he threw for almost 3000 yards and in 20 touchdowns. It's not like he's trying to get there and figure it out for the first time. He's, you know, that's not what he's trying to do. He's trying to get back to where he was, why it has disappeared. Maybe it is confidence. I don't know. Maybe it is. Maybe that that injury, you know, is in his head a little bit. Maybe it's, you know, the, the offensive line. Maybe he doesn't have complete trust in the offensive line. Prize picks is America's number one daily fantasy sports app with over five million active members. So that's why I have confidence that he can get there again. But as Marcus for you to Mike Dembrock at both said. They don't care how they score touchdowns just as long as they score. Just scores. That's right. I get so frustrated when they can be run first but to beat Louisville they have to be competent throwing the ball. What's your definition of competent because like Texas A&M I think is a better team than Louisville. And so like was like does that qualify as confident like what you got against Texas A&M again. We thought that we probably see a little bit more but that was a specific game plan. You know meant to attack Texas A&M specifically because of the strength of their defensive line and stuff like that like is that. And I'm asking a serious question I'm not being sarcastic like is that good enough. Does that qualify as competent because I think the running game now is even better than it was against Texas A&M and and Louisville's defensive front is not going to be near what Texas A&M was so Notre Dame. Yeah they should yeah yeah in modern college football you have to be able to do both you have to run the ball you have to throw the ball but Notre Dame has a very prolific running game and they should be able to get enough off of that. To beat Louisville or whoever else shows up on the schedule. I just I don't care how you score points I'm not going to criticize how you get your touchdowns you just got to score points and win the game you know whether that what that formula looks like of 70% run 30% pass. You know 50% run 50% pass that's just all dictated by how the game unfolds and I think that's where I get really frustrated is a lot of people are like whoa hypothetically what if you know we can't do this against well how do we know until we get to that situation right like if Notre Dame can continuously beat teams down with the run why do there's no need to have this advanced passing game to me being a competent passing team is exactly what happened against Texas A&M. They in certain situations they found ways to make plays when they needed in the passing a way that was the third down pass to Jane and great house whether it was the fade on the next play to bow Collins on the sideline for 15 to 20 yards. Again I don't care as long as you the dictate the situation dictates you need pass then you got to be able to do you know to basically have the passing game available that's that's what I would say you got to hit a pass in a crucial situation that demands a pass that you can't just take off scrambling and think you're going to get 15 or 20 yards or whatever happens to be you got it you've got it obviously got to be able to hit some clutch passes that does have to be part of it and I agree DJ. I'm not saying Louisville doesn't have a good front seven I am just saying it's not as good and not as formidable as what Texas A&M's was going from played like a champion in or out Notre Dame's offense will end this year with similar productivity to what LSU had under Denmark in 2022. Oh, I didn't see the 2022. I was thinking 2023. So I looked at the numbers they had 3800 passing yards and 2600 rushing yards. I think those numbers could be easily flipped. I think Notre Dame could be, you know, a well over 3000 yard rushing team and be a team that's going now. Yeah, and a team that's in the mid 2000s, you know, for for the passing and again that's kind of what I was just saying like the formula for how you get your total yards really shouldn't matter as long as you're getting the total yards you need to win games right so that's you know that's an offense that put up just about 66 6500 total yards. I think Notre Dame's will get to it. It's just it's going to be a larger chunk of run than it is past. Yes, I agree with that as well. And I'm done with any LSU comparisons at this point. I'm going to be out on that, you know, what Denmark did at LSU just because the pace that this Notre Dame team and Leonard are off to right now. You're just not going to hit any of those passing milestones. Like you said, it might flip, but you know, whereas the rushing is closer to what LSU had for the passing numbers and vice versa, but I just, I don't. Again, I just don't see the passing game just all of a sudden igniting. This is still going to be a slow and incremental process to get to that. Now, to what Bubs is saying, he says they're going to be games, possibly as early as Louisville, they will need over 200 yards passing to win. Okay, well, don't forget they had over 200 passing yards last week against Purdue. And just because Riley Leonard ended up with 100 yards, don't forget he came out at halftime. Like he was, he was well on pace to have over a 200 yard, both rushing and passing day, if he had stayed in the game last week against Purdue. You know, like how much you want to put on that because Purdue's Purdue and how bad their defense looked and all that stuff. But the point is, he had 100 yards. Steve Angeli had 100 yards passing as well. And then Kenny Menchie had a, had a, you know, some change in passing yards. So like Riley Leonard stayed in there and they kept running the offense. He would have had a 200 and 200 yard day, you know, just the way the pace of the game was going. So, like, again, I think, I think, you know, even, even part of what he did last week gets skewed because of that, because of the fact that he did have to come out at halftime. So he didn't get a full game, you know, to show like what he could do over the course of a full game. He was, even though he wasn't great, he was still efficient, hitting, hitting some passes. Again, you like the Great House pass flagged for a penalty, the pass to Bo Collins, just off would have been a relatively long touchdown if nap doesn't bump into him back there. So, like, I think Mike Denmark, when we talked about it yesterday, he just needs a couple of those to fall to get the confidence going. And again, like the perception starts to change a little bit once a couple of those hit. Final one, we in, we out Notre Dame's reshuffled offensive line will end up as good or better than our initial starting offensive line has been by the end of the year. But tell you what, let's save that, let's save that because we're going to touch on offensive line and rapid fire. So, since, since played like a champion got three and we will save the offensive line talk for rapid fire because we are going to address that back there. But John is saying he is out on that one and then we get the Angelia's elite comments. All right, from clear screen 25 by game eight, the pass rush duo of Buba car, Treyori and Bryce Young will emerge as a force on a national level. I'll be out on that. I don't think there'll be a force on a national level, but I think they'll have a really good solid productive seasons, especially considering the opportunity that they got with these injuries and being so young that I think that they will naturally get kind of some attention for being, you know, some of these younger ends that had to step up and play at a high level. So, you know, nationally, probably not, but at least within this fan base and I think that they'll be, you know, respectable enough. Yeah, I'm going to be out as well. Treyori is going to continue to rise and you're going to see some really good things from him over the course of the season with just like what a great athlete. He is Bryce Young is going to come along as well. I think everyone's forgetting about Josh Burnham, though, because Burnham has obviously, you know, he was out last week when Josh Burnham is in on that other side where Bryce Young plays, you're going to see a lot of really good things from Josh Burnham. All I'll say is, don't forget about Burnham, because once he's back from that ankle injury, you're going to be feeling pretty good Bryce Young will be the compliment to that. I think, you know, again, Bryce Young, really good. Nice highlight play blowing, you know, decapitating the guy on the kickoff coverage last week, but I think he's going to be more of the compliment and Burnham is going to be the guy on that strong side. Bonus in or out women's basketball. Kate Koval will establish herself as a real inside outside threat while Maddie Westbelt recovers from her foot surgery. I'll go in on that. Liza Carlin will be, you know, part of that as well. The Marquette grad transfer because, you know, she kind of plays that same position as Westbelt, but I'm really excited to see Koval in action for the first time. And this is going to be since Neil Ivy has been here. The first really legit fully recruit, you know, like incoming freshmen, highly rated freshmen that Neil Ivy recruited that she'll have as opposed. And again, like she can step outside a little bit and hit some of those three pointers. So I think it's definitely going to give her more opportunities to get in there and show what she can do. Early on, so I'll be in on that. I'll let you just take that one. Okay, sounds good. Diesel six in or out a true number one wide receiver will emerge for Notre Dame by the end of the season. Roughly defined as numbers equivalent to an all conference power for wide receiver. I'm going to be out on that. I just, I don't think Notre Dame's going to have some, you know, dynamic thousand yard receiver, six touchdowns type of guy. I just think when they do pass, it's going to be, you know, distributed out. There's a lot of guys that again, no one really dominates this team and receptions that the receptions are kind of more, you know, spread out as are the target. I just don't see any way that someone can just start dying, dominating and getting towards like that thousand yard, six touchdown benchmark I just talked about. You know what, I mean, like all conference numbers. So like if we're going third team, all conference, I'll go in. I think that like when you look at what Bo Collins has done so far, they look his way quite a bit. He's the most snaps played of any of the wide receivers. He has 12 receptions. You know, again, it's, it's not a ton, but he has 12 great house has eight. I mean, think about the fact that two that receivers are up there at the top of the receiving list right now instead of tied in. So I think that Collins has already, if he, you know, if he hasn't emerged, he's begun to emerge. I do think he is kind of the go to guy. And I think his experience plays into a lot of that. The fact that he is a pretty versatile himself and can do some different things. And he's got pretty sure hands as well. So I'm, I'll be in, and I'll say it's Bo Collins. We're still kind of, you know, waiting for, for a lot of other things to happen, which we'll get to discuss here. You know, again, right now, because there's another Riley Leonard question coming up from Mackie. In or out Riley Leonard has a fixed mindset. Now this one, you know, like, yes, this is pretty deep here. Riley Leonard has a fixed mindset and is unable to get better because he believes that talent is given by God and success has little to do with hard work and learning. Either you got it or you don't. Therefore, he will not improve as he plays more practices more and gets more comfortable with his new system, new coaches and new receivers. Look, I'm just going to be all the way out on that because Riley Leonard is a very hard worker. He is working on it. He's a hard worker. He's a competitor. He's all those different things. And you can say that we're, you know, we were, you know, we were defending him, you know, whatever it happens to be. We've been talking about the quarterbacks for the last couple of weeks. I couldn't be any more out on this. Like, you've, you've got your mind made up. Most people have their minds made up on like who their favorite is. You're either in on Leonard, you're in on Angeli, you got some on Minchi, you got some on car over there as well. I don't think anyone's mind is going to change on the quarterback, but I'm completely out on this. Yeah, I think this is, I'm trying to be as diplomatic as possible. You can write, you can think what you want about Riley Leonard, but I just think that this is a not very pleasant question at the end of the day. Right, right Leonard is a tremendously hard worker, someone who wants to consistently get better. And I think is truly bought into the whole brotherhood aspect of it like being, you know, being better serving for his brothers, his teammates, the team, the overall, you know, bigger picture and that sort of thing. And the thing I come back to is this is a guy, you know, after he hurt his ankle against Notre Dame, this was a guy that was, you know, playing an obvious pain, you know, still out there, and to me that's not a fixed mindset. At the end of the day, so I just I couldn't disagree with this question more. Yeah, we don't have to spend a whole lot more time on that. And we did, he is a subscriber, he submitted his question so we at least addressed it. So, Wilson 19 Lucas, we and we out Riley Leonard will be over 26 touchdown passes by the end of the regular outs. I tell you what, I've got an overunder that I'm going to work into rapid fire for the countdown to kick off show this weekend it's a lot lower than 26 I mean they've got nine games left and even if he gets to a game that's 18 he'd have to be on a pace for three passing touchdowns. A game there's there's literal no way he's getting to 26. Yeah, I don't see it. I just, because of the fact that you know like what we saw with his running game last week like he could still end up combining for 30 total touchdowns this season. It's just that as a passer, you're not going to like what it looks like and you're still going to complain that all he's doing is scoring rushing touchdowns as he takes another win to the bank. Yeah, I think total touchdowns might be a better question on this but passing touchdowns, there's just no way. Yeah, by the way Lucas, it's quite fine that you're not able to listen live we appreciate the fact that he says he listens the next morning while driving to work that's perfect that's the perfect way to do it get your cup of coffee, get it and go. So as you're listening right now, happy Friday morning on your way to work. It's Friday baby. Yes, it's Friday. Hopefully it's payday. Forever or ending forever 72, enter out. Great house will become the alpha dog wide receiver we expected him to be and lead the team and catches yards or touchdowns. Take your pick on those three by seasons end so will he, will he lead the team and catches yards or touchdowns. No, I think that Bo Collins has emerged as the favorable, dependable, you know, sort of target and again I think I'm still, I think that they're going to really work in these tight ends over the next few games as well. I could see it tied in actually leading the team and receptions by the time it's all said and done but nothing against great house. I just right now with, you know, Bo Collins and think how things have gone in the passing game. I just don't think that there's going to be this miraculous turnaround. Yeah, I don't either. You know, again, like, it's not like college has an insurmountable lead, but I just don't say, you know, one. Two different tight ends have the touchdowns right now. So not only is Leonard not thrown one, but obviously it's tight ends that have the touchdown. So I just think that it's going to be too hard for great house. Just the way things are operating right now to end up there. But I, you know, like the tight end thing is a good point. Because I've kind of we've kind of mentioned it here and there in the last week or two and we did see it last week the way they were to kind of scheme open those tight ends. I think that you hear it all the time for like Riley Leonard is not a young tight end or not a young quarterback, but for any quarterback that's kind of struggling to, you know, to find a target to get things going in the passing line that tight end tight end is your best friend. And I don't want everything to be just short and intermediate stuff, but they just need something to get it kickstarted. And with guys like Evans and Reardon and Flanagan. You know, I feel like they can again. And because of great houses size, you know, even though he's not a tight end, but that's also why I think that he can be a part of that mix as well out of the slot. So what do you think tight ends kind of can help out Riley Leonard quite a bit. Another one from ND forever 72 we in a way out by the time he's done it Notre Dame CJ car will clearly be one of the best quarterbacks to play at Notre Dame since Joe Montana and be invited to New York City for the Heisman ceremony for the shot to win. And that's a that's a lot there. And I think that the only the only way that happens is if CJ car becomes the starter, you know, next season he's got to be a guy that's got to play quarterback for two, three seasons. You know, leave a legacy develop as he's going on potentially when, you know, Heisman and year two or three. I think the potential is there but if I were, you know, again, if I, I put my betting hat on I'd have to be out on this I just think that's a lot. A lot to ask. You know, I came into this season again based on knowing what Riley Leonard did it Duke throw in the football a couple years ago thinking, oh man, Heisman hype and all that different kind of stuff. I'm going to say CJ car will be the best quarterback at Notre Dame since Brady Quinn. Okay. I do realize Jimmy Clausen came after him. I still put Quinn. Above Jimmy Clausen, you know, maybe, maybe it's unfair to Clausen because he didn't have as good a defenses is what Brady Quinn had but I will say best since Quinn and I will say, I'll just, I'm going to go in, I'm going to go in. I'll, I'll say yes, he'll, he'll be invited to New York City for the Heisman, you know, whether or not he wins it. I think he'll be a Heisman finalist before it's all said in bed. But I get sucked into this Heisman stuff every year. So, Tommy Reese's bail money that that some said something else for a second. We enter we out Notre Dame finishes the 26 recruiting class with a five star wide receiver and a five star defensive lineman. We don't follow recruiting that closely as, you know, regulars of the show. No, but I'm just the way it's looking right now. I don't want to start a firestorm, but I'm just going to have to be out. If I were following trends, I would say out. Yeah, Ryan's here. I mean, you know, maybe Ryan wants to chime in on it. I think most other people agree with me as well. 13 reasons why Notre Dame will have three more games like last week, score wise, this season, in or out. Like, you know, 60 to. Oh, yeah, I did blow out, I guess 50 something 50 plus something to one score. I'm just going to have to say, I never bank on Notre Dame winning in these large blowout type fashions. I think that there's, you know, Miami, Ohio, Army, Navy are definitely, you know, candidates. But again, I just, I want to take this thing one game at a time and just one win at a time and focus on, you know, this offense continuing to develop it. And, you know, by the time the season is over, just be a really good complete offense that we know the identity of, because I think we have a good idea of what the defense is. And yes, there's some shortcomings, you know, with the linebackers here and there and these, these, these injuries don't help the defensive line. But again, what's going to potentially win this team of championship is how far their offense can come by the end of the season. So that's all I'm worried about. I don't care, you know, if it's a blowout win, if it's not, just, just find ways to get better every week. So the name of the show is we in, we out. It's not by cell hold, obviously, so we can't hold on this. So I've got to either be in or out. I've got to be out just because I do have to, I need to see what this looks like this weekend against Miami, because that's really going to tell me if this team, you know, truly learned its lesson and where it's going to be going for the rest of the year. Like, I feel like they should handle. Miami fairly soundly this weekend, but need to see it. I mean, we've got, we've already got like after one game, we all got caught thinking way too macro on this team this season and what things could look like. And it just blew up in a big way on everybody in week two. So I'm not going to, I'm not going to predict that far down the line. Let's, let's see them string together two good weeks before we start talking about how many blowouts they're going to have over the course of the season. So I'm temporarily out for right now. We can revisit, maybe even on Monday though. Where's Thizeman's Heisman? I haven't seen this handle item thing before. Anthony Knapp will move back inside as an interior lineman with Gerby Lambert waiting in the wings for next season. I mean, I think the comment, I'm going to say and just because I think that the combination of Jaggis saw and Lambert, you know, in some of these kind of veterans that'll be moving on after this season. I think naturally, you know, Anthony Knapp will start to kind of move back inside. I think the only reason you see this is, you know, Lambert wasn't quite ready and now you have Jaggis Hall. The only thing I could potentially see is Jaggis saw and I can't think of the other guys. Oh, Wagner, you know, basically being the guys potentially. And that would force, you know, NAP back inside as well. But I lean towards, you know, once some of these tackles get healthy and get some more experience that NAP could move back inside. I mean, you know, and again, like, there's going to be a whole new slew of competitions next year and, you know, like does everybody stick around, you know, with, with, with the depth they've got right now and all these guys and their ability to start. You think NAP is going to move inside Lambert and Jaggis saw are going to be part of the mix, as is a meal Wagner, but you know, like, and like as Wagner, or you know, as Coogan and spindler found out just because you were the starter one year doesn't mean that you're going to keep that job. The next year, I mean, all these jobs are going to be up for grabs next year. And you should be, you should have basically four tackles fighting for two spots if NAP does stay outside, but I do think because of his size. He ultimately moves inside, but there's not a spot for him inside right now either just because of all the depth that they've got at those positions. I'm sure exactly right. That's the way it should be in terms of competing for jobs and all that different kind of stuff. Yeah, I mean, Wagner has been, Wagner's been pretty good. You know, I won't maybe go great but he's been pretty good. Let me look at the PFF rankings here. Right now, I think that he is like Shrauth was their highest rated offensive lineman, of course, before his injury and a meal Wagner is their second highest rated, or graded, according to PFF. Anyway, the fact that we haven't had to talk very much about a meal Wagner, I think that that speaks for how well he has played for the most part right there, because when do you talk about offensive lineman when they're not playing well. Right. That's the only time they usually come up. Hayden Hayden knob 21, we and we out during phase on speed gives the offense a spark on return from injury against Miami Ohio catches at least two big play passes for 20 plus yards, in a row. I'm going to say out. I'll give him out. I think he's got a chance for one. That's what I was just getting ready to say I think he's got a chance for one. But I hate to, you know, sound like a broken record and, you know, kind of essentially stir the pot to at the end of the day, but they're going to run. They're going to run a lot, and then naturally going to find stuff shorter to intermediate. I just don't think there's any rush to get this whole, you know, 20 plus yard thing. I mean, I think the 20 plus starts happening because their name does so well schematically that they get their guys to catch the ball and run essentially. I think that you'll see more yak plays than, you know, air yard 20 yard passes going down the field. I mean, there'll be a punt or a punt. I just looked at the comment that Andrew threw in there regarding the punt. There will be a shot or two downfield because again, we've seen a few shots downfield. They just haven't connected so far. A punt return, although he needs to catch it and not let it bounce. Yeah, I think we'd all like to see it like that's that's kind of with with phase on what I'm almost more most excited to see is just that little shiftiness as a punt return man and what to do back there a little bit more wiggle. Notre Dame just say screw it, you know, first play of the game come out in this heavy, you know, 12 personnel type look, run a, you know, maybe even a 22 personnel look and just run a heavy play action and just launch that thing 50 yards down the field. Why not just let it cut, you know, everyone, Miami, Ohio probably is not a safety in that direction. Yeah, Miami, Ohio has, you know, been for sure preparing for the run game like crazy this week and again. Come out in a heavy personnel package, give all of it like, yeah, we're going to, you know, we're just going to run this thing. You hit a hard play action and just let it rip. I don't know. I kind of would like it. I wouldn't mind it either. I wouldn't mind it at all. Nerd for life. We in and we out bow Collins will go over 80 yards receiving with a long touchdown Saturday Riley will be five and nine with balls traveling at least 15 yards in the air. Um, I think I've got to be out on this. Uh, I would say, I just, I like, like you were telling me about all these, you know, bets you were going to make on Notre Dame last week and obviously had I placed the wagers on Notre Dame, they would have won, but I don't feel any more comfortable making receiving predictions that I, that I did on whether or not I told you about my love one and a half points last week, you know. Yeah, you did. You did. He got most of that on that first touchdown run. You know, I'm going to be in on bow Collins. I do think that someone is going to have a relatively big week this week. I don't know who it will be. I think bow Collins gives you the best shot, you know, based on trend so far. I'll be out on the second part about the five through nine, you know, balls traveling at least 15 yards in the air. Um, I do think their name is going to continue to have success running the ball. And I do think they're going to have some, uh, some, some growth in the passing game. So, you know, I do like this number of 80 yards. I do think someone's going to have a solid day, but not quite 100 yard day. Yeah, I mean, I could see somebody see a receiver having a pretty good day, you know, like three catches and in that 70 to 85 yard range. Um, but you know, again, like, am I going to make a bold prediction on it? That's, that's where I'm not very comfortable right now. Joe's asking about maxis food and spirits barn. Uh, good prime rib. The last I was there. It's been a little while, but, uh, I would, I would recommend the prime rib. If you're into prime rib, Joe, that would be a good call right there. Start up that Andrew Gilmore question in the chat. I've lost my starting the Mel Kuiper. Yeah. We'll come back to that. Okay. Good. We'll save that for rapid fire because I did see some talk about that today. Okay, we've got multiples here from bracketed cover three in or out Bryce Young is going to be the most productive big end at Notre Dame by the end of the season in terms of impact play sacks tackles for loss, et cetera. Again, I'm just going to be out because I think Josh Burnham is going to have this. I think I'm healthy well, but I think Burnham, assuming he's healthy, is going to be the guy that that leads over on that side. I would say, yeah, if Burnham's healthy, then he's going to be the guy. There you go. In or out Christian Gray has been the best and most consistent corner cover for Notre Dame so far. I would say true or in on this one. I do think he's been a better overall corner cover than Benjamin Morrison and maybe some of these nickel guys as well, but, you know, that is, I just feel like naturally and I haven't, you know, I've been watching this every game or keeping note of it, but I just feel like he's been playing, he's had less kind of, you know, not explosive plays, but, you know, big plays on him, essentially, like, I think he's been playing really good coverage. He's given up a little less than a little, you know, fewer plays than Benjamin Morrison so far. Christian Gray, PFF, grades him at a 65.8, they grade Morrison at a 62. You know who the highest grade of defensive back is and the guy that's impressed me so far. Jordan Clark, he's got a grade of over 80%. So, we'll talk about him and rapid fire as well. So, yeah, I'd put Morrison a little bit above him just because, or I mean, Gray's play a little bit above Morrison right now. They both played well, but I think that Gray has been more consistent so far. So, many Notre Dame fans and college football insiders prior to the season said Notre Dame has one of the best coordinator duos in college football. After three games, Mike Dembrock and Al Golden still give Notre Dame the best coordinator. One of the best coordinator duos in the nation, interact on that. Yeah, I think when, you know, you lead that conversation with Al Golden, what he's been able to do so far this season. I mean, he gave up what, 17 points, 16 points. So then the average right there is somewhere on 16 and a half and then you give up seven on the next one. You know, that's an offense that's only given up, you know, just about 10, 11 points, or sorry, a defense that's only given up 10, 11 points a game. So, I do regard Al Golden as one of the top top defensive coordinators in the country, especially what he's able to do, you know, in terms of disguise coverage blitzes, all of that good stuff. I think Mike Dembrock is got the potential. I just think that naturally this offense is slowly kind of progressing compared to, you know, what fans kind of expected out of the gate. I think Mike Dembrock is regarded as one of the top coordinators and will continue to show that, you know, throughout the duration of the season and into his, you know, return tenure at Notre Dame. I'm definitely in on Al Golden. We've seen it so far on what they've done. They, Joey says they lost to NIU, so out. My point on Denbrock, and you know, Andrew says not impressed with Dembrock, it took a loss to NIU to Taylor, the O, Leonard's running crazy. You know, again, I don't think that that's all on Mike Dembrock, where that was coming from. I think, I think how Denbrock is going to be judged is how he makes these adjustments over the course of the season. How he adjusts to Riley Leonard and how he brings more out of Riley Leonard and gets Leonard more comfortable in that passing game. That's ultimately how Denbrock is going to be judged this season. But I do think that they are definitely one of the best duo, you know, coordinator duos in the nation. And this is a great point as well, DK. Every now and then, DK does make a great point, and this is one of them. People wanted Al Golden fired after one year. I think it's important to remember that, because think of what it seemed like anyway. I don't know if it was just the loud minority or if it was actually the majority, but a lot of people wanted Al Golden gone after one year. And look at where that defense has gone over the last year plus since then. So I don't think you can judge Mike Denbrock just on what's happened so far. Big sample size coming at the end of the season. And again, I think how he adjusts, how he adjusts to Riley Leonard and how he continues to bring more out of Riley Leonard is ultimately how you're going to judge Denbrock for this season. And I mean, let's not forget, look at everything that's happened on that offensive line so far. And that does play into, you know, again, like if you want to say that, you know, like, that it's a lack of confidence for Leonard and all these different things. I mean, how many different, what, so they've had seven different offensive linemen play so far, you know, because of the injuries and going back to camp. And eighth with jackassaw who got injured before the season even started the most important guy on the offensive line, the left tackle. So all of that kind of factors into both Riley Leonard and into Mike Denbrock and how you evaluate them as well. Hey Irish Breakdown listeners, it's Urban Meyer. This fall the game changes. Okay, last one from bracketed cover three given Riley Leonard's ability to avoid the rush and make big plays with his legs combined with Notre Dame's offensive line challenges. Leonard definitely gives Notre Dame the best chance to win out and make the playoffs. Yeah, I have to be and I kind of wanted to get into this, but I didn't want to get into this because is it so loaded. Yeah, it goes so low. It is a very loaded question. Listen, we saw how many sacks did we see Stephen jelly take when the pocket crashed on him against Purdue last week at least two that I can definitely think of. And at that point, you know, that's when Notre Dame's up and winning like how do you think Stephen jelly would have fared back there against Texas A&M with the young offensive line and those, those, you know, those rushes, you know, bearing down on him. And so, you know, I get everyone wants to talk about Riley Leonard's inability to throw the ball and all that stuff. But, you know, the young offensive line that's still figuring things out that is still, you know, not perfect and past protection. Riley Leonard is like a security blanket out there because he can avoid sacks and he can mass, you know, an inexperienced offensive line. And so, again, I know it's easy to sit up here and take shots at Riley Leonard, but again, at the end of the day, one of his, you know, many talents that I think kind of goes unnoticed is when that pocket collapses. He's not making a thrower. Maybe he's only gaining a yard or two, but he's not getting negative yards. He's not taking a sack. And that's something that happened in a small sample size with Angeli against Purdue last week. Yeah, so people wanted to defend Angeli because he had backup lineman playing in front of him. Okay, whatever. He's still late the sack, you know, I mean, what are we going to, what does that say? He was still a statue, regardless of, you know, Riley Leonard would have would have got out of there regardless of who's in front of you. I mean, he's essentially, and this is not a shot at Anthony now, but he's essentially got a backup lineman playing full time left tackle for him because Charles Jagasau's not in there. And that's, that's had an impact on Leonard as well. It's just simple to me. Leonard barely gets sacked. And Jolie got sacked three times because he has no mobility at all. You know, he got sacked three times in the second half. And so, yes, combined with quarter. Not even a second half a quarter. They had, they had Kenny Menchie and, and, you know, CJ Carr in by the fourth quarter. So we're talking about three sacks and one quarter. And a lot of people are saying coverage sacks and all these things will have been jelly such a great thrower than why is he not again avoiding those sacks. You know, there's things you can do. You can get rid of that ball. You can complete a pass. You can escape with your feet. Allah Riley Leonard. But all I know at the end of the day is Riley Leonard took one sack and a lot, you know, you could even say zero sacks against Texas A&M. And that's one of the best defensive lines in the country and not, you know, the Purdue defensive line that couldn't stop their name from running the ball all day Saturday. I'm not going to get into the Angeli Leonard debate. It's too late in the week. I'm too tired for that right now. We can come back to it next week based on what we see on Saturday. Maybe we get to see Steve Angeli in the second half again. So if that be fun and then we get to argue over whether or not he needs to be out there more after Riley Leonard, you know, leads him to five touchdown drives but he doesn't throw enough touchdown passes. Mr. Gilmore in the house with a question Notre Dame is much closer to the teams at the top of the big 12 than they are to the teams at the top of the SEC. But just this year. Andrew, we're talking about just this year. I was talking about this year question. I mean, I would be in on this for this year because, sorry, I just got a cramp in my arm because the lines that Notre Dame has just aren't built the same right now as those SEC lines. They are much more comparable. Too much more comparable to the big 12. Big matchup in the big 12, by the way, this weekend Utah and Oklahoma State. I'm anxious is like Utah is just, you know, cranking over everybody right now but yeah I'm, I'm in just because the trenches right now. Like, you know, they're obviously Notre Dame's interior offensive line is closer, but that's really it for me right now. So. I agree. I agree with that statement closer. I'd be in because I think Notre Dame could impose their will on big 12 teams much easier than they could against the SEC. They probably be. Right. A little undersized and undermanned against, you know, like you were saying in the trenches. So I agree with that. Fish and I you will finish the season ranked in the top 20 in or out on that. I think the only way that happens is if they're like a double digit when team and they win the Mac. And potentially, you know, contend for that group of five champion at the end of the day but I don't know that that seems pretty lofty to me. I want that to happen, you know, as the Notre Dame fan and the ambitious side of me but I'm just going to say out. Yeah, I agree. I am out on it as well. Obviously for Notre Dame, it would be very good. If that happens. But I thought a couple of years ago, you know, it's like, oh, Marshall, all these transfers and this young head coach and he's got them fired up and they're ready to go and they beat Notre Dame and then they lost the next week, right? Like, you know, so and they ended up losing four games, I think, by the time the season was over. And I just, I just see. Yeah, like DJ says, the Mac is too competitive. I see NIU losing at least a couple games in the Mac this season. The thing about the Mac is they all relatively have the same talent level so they're running predominantly. The margin between the top team and the bottom team is much smaller than the top team and the bottom team in the power for conferences right. And the other thing that hurts the Mac is they all run similar types of schemes. And by the time, you know, NIU has played six, seven games, it just takes a really good, you know, week of preparation and game plan to get to them essentially and that's, that's kind of the downside that Notre Dame had and again I'm not making excuses for Notre Dame. But you always make excuses for Notre Dame. The downside of Notre Dame playing NIU in week two is they really hadn't put a lot out there on film right so that more of that kind of gimmicky, you know, we're going to schematically kind of outsmart you here and there. Doesn't really last as long by the time you get into the deep to the thick of the Mac schedule essentially. Yeah, I agree. I completely agree with all of that and they had a very specific game plan and they executed it well with very little, you know, as you said, very little game film to show on either side. From DJ coaches Freeman, Denmark, Gudoule and Brown, no CJ cars, the best quarterback in the room, they've already targeted the game to show it in the second half in or outside note, I think it's Virginia or army. I'm going to be out on the first part that they know he's the best quarterback in the room. I think he's ahead of, you know, schedule essentially, but I still think he has a bit of way to go. But you know, I think there, I wouldn't be surprised if Marcus Freeman. There's games that you want to get him in knowing the new red shirt rule right and I think that's maybe more of the thought process and not specifically the game of, or not, you know, which game it is but how much can we get him in, but not burn the red shirt in the season. I think that's more so the thought process. Yeah, you know, like Steven says he'd be at least third on the depth chart if that was true. It's, this is just a very unique year in that they have four scholarship quarterbacks. Remember, they only had three last year and I'm not sure they were completely convinced that they were going to have four guys this year so, you know, maybe, maybe Carr would have been the number three, you know, he would have been the number three if, if someone had left last year. Do they have a game? Look, I think the only way that they're locking in on a game to roll CJ, like they're, they're, they're parts of this DJ that I agree with and I'm not going to get too deep into but like I think the only way they're going to target like CJ Carr where you would move him up like that is this is this if this season goes off the rails, basically. I think I think they're fully content with him developing behind the scenes. They're confident in the skill and the, you know, the knowledge base and everything else that he has. I think they're fully content with him in the mix, developing with those other three guys in front of him this year and I don't think that they're all that worried about rolling him out there this season. In or out mom's meatloaf. My mom never really made a ton of meatloaf so I'm going out. It's interesting because I just, she made me meatloaf last week. Maybe you're, I'm not really a huge meatloaf fan either like I didn't know. I just a kid, I didn't want like the, a lot of people just, you know, drench it and catch up and it's like, I didn't, I was never really a huge catch up person I didn't really like the sweetness of it like if I had french fries. I would rather dip my french fries and ranch than I would catch up. That's, I've done that before like good, good ranch dressing back in the day. Yeah, like good homemade, nothing beats a good homemade ranch dressing in my opinion. I do like a, I like a nice, a cold meatloaf sandwich like that's, that's what I like. I don't, I don't disagree with you, Tommy, but Andrew agrees with you. So, don't progress if Rocco balls out the next two weeks, but he doesn't play another meaningful snap all year. He's shown enough in his Notre Dame career to be draftable after this year, interact on that. I out. You're not going to get drafted if you're not starting in, in, on your college team. I will say though, have no fear because Rocco Spindler is here, baby. You know, that's, not to be biased, but that's my guy. And then, and for a team that wants to run the ball a lot, I think Rocco Spindler is, he's not a bad option to have on your side, given, you know, the injury that happened essentially. Don McGry says if out, then he should transform in order to get enough playing time to become draftable. I mean, that's what the center last year did. I can't think of his name. Zeke Carrell. Zeke Carrell, that's exactly. And that'll be a decision. He saw the writing on the wall. Yeah, I mean, you know, again, like with all this depth that they've got at those interior positions, that's going to be, that's going to be something that that that Spindler is probably going to have to consider, especially since he'll have his degree at this point from Notre Dame. Yeah, that's the big part of it for these guys is a lot of them, you know, everyone thinks it comes down to just, are you the starter or not at the end of the day, right? Like you're still developing a part of a program, but most importantly, I think for a lot of these guys, it was a dream to play for Notre Dame, right? And so to finish your degree and at least have the education on your side that goes a long way with with people. So I think that's ultimately when you see guys kind of pick it up and leave is like, all right, I've got my degree. You know, maybe I can go get a master's real quick somewhere and make some money in the NIL and be, you know, the dude, the starter for at least one season. Yeah, and I mean, like when you say, well, I played offensive line for Notre Dame, you're going to have a ton of interest if you hit the portal. And I'm not saying he's going to, but I mean, he's going to have to wait. Do I come back again and battle for a job here at Notre Dame and risk losing that job and potentially a professional future, or do I just go somewhere else that gives me the best chance to go in, play at least 12 if not 13, 14 games someplace and have a much better chance to get drafted. I mean, that's, that's what he's going to have to weigh in Tom. Pat Coogan was talking about how much he loves Notre Dame this week and his media opportunities as well. Right now, Rhino 1285 Jeremiah Love will get over 1100 rushing yards rightly Leonard will go 500 yards rushing and 2500 yards passing in a 12 plus one season so 13 games you enter out on that. I'll be in on Jeremiah's rushing yards and running Leonard's rushing yards I'll be out on the passing yards. As of right now, he's on pace for a little over 1700 yards. So, if you give him a 13th game then you're talking about 1900 now obviously the pace can change. If, if something happens here in the near future and he is able to kick it up to another gear. I think he's going to be in the ballpark of 2500 yards, but I am out on that, but I will take the other two I'll take. I'll go in on the 500 rushing yards for Leonard and in on the 1100 rushing yards for Jeremiah love. From Tommy guns enter out Mel Kuiper should never be allowed to seriously talk about. Again, he suggested banning the two high safety play. Again, let's save this we're going to save the the the Mel Kuiper. Too deep safety for rapid fire, but Tommy guns has another question the bow show solidifies his spot as the team's number one receiver this weekend, enter out. I'll say and I like that. I don't like the stat line he put no he says potential stat line 15 catches 175 yards three tuddies. I'm sorry, but, but the number one receiver thing I think he's, he's already there if he's, you know, he's at least working his way there if he's not already there. From DK enter out. If the first team offense doesn't improve in the past game from week to week the wide receivers will eventually get frustrated. I mean naturally no wide receiver wants to, you know, be running routes on air and getting their cardio in right like, I don't think guys have an issue with buying in because you're not going to touch the ball every play as a wide receiver. But they need a little bit of love too so then they do want to, you know, run hard and block hard and do everything else it means to be a good wide receiver outside of the catching catching the ball right so it's kind of like you got to keep them satisfied by giving them some receptions here and there. But, you know, I, I think this passing game is enough right now to keep them satisfied and I do think it's going to get better and continue to satisfy them but again at the end of the day like it's Marcus Riemann's job to have these guys bought in on the team it doesn't matter what your individual stats look like when they can run the ball you see Jeremiah love, you know, break it on the perimeter you see Bo Collins had a great block to seal a touchdown run. What's the satisfying in my opinion. Yeah, I think there's a, I'm sure that there are at least some guys have already got some level of frustration because they're wide receivers and they want the ball in their hands but what we've seen is they're pretty good teammates, you know, so they are, they're, they're towing the line right now. I'm sure there's some level of frustration but I think that I think at some point they'll be more than just stock blockers out there. I'm going to start to swing. All right, Josh, I saved yours for a rapid fire as well. [Music] [Music] [Music] At King Super's pharmacy, care is making it easy to get vaccinated.
