We've got a lot going on today as always. We've got We In, We Out questions from the new champions lounge that were submitted earlier. I saw that some late ones came in just a little bit ago, so we've got those. We've got some comments from Marcus Freeman. We've even got a little bit different direction that we're going to touch on here in a second. Joe, welcome to South Bend. He just rolled in from Omaha, ready for the game this weekend. Welcome to town. Weather is beautiful today. Couple days away from game day. How are you today, Jesse? Pretty groggy. Last week of work at the current place before I switched jobs, so it's been a little, just not a lot to do. I'm kind of bored. They took all my projects away from me, so I'm just kind of, I just sit there and do nothing relatively for this last week. Hey, take it when you can get it, because you get to the new job and I'm sure they'll be heaping stuff on you as soon as they can. Yeah. Yeah, today I got my WKRP shirt on. Today is the, I just, I saw this morning as I woke up 46 years ago today, the premiere episode of WKRP in Cincinnati. Well, oh, where the WKRP shirt. What the, how fast to love you? Yeah, brought it out, dug it out. Well, there's an interesting little article before we get to the Marcus Freeman stuff up at ESPN.com today. I was shocked to see that they actually wrote a story about this, the 15 year anniversary of Golden State or Golden State. Taking the post touchdown plunge into the Michigan State Band at Notre Dame Stadium. Do you remember that? Yeah, I remember it. I know it was Charlie Weiss's last season. Jimmy Clausen was still, you know, playing, obviously playing quarterback. And I believe they were kind of coming off a diff, you know, a loss to Michigan. That's kind of more so what I remember. And then they were, you know, Notre Dame back then had, we've talked about this before. It felt like Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue were the constant rivals every year. And like you could lose to maybe one of them, but losing to multiple of them was never, never in the cards. And so back to back weeks, if you're going to lose to Michigan and Michigan State, back to back. Yeah, so I just remember it kind of that more so being the thing of, you know, like, man, we just lost to Michigan can't lose to Michigan State. Obviously it was coming down towards the end and, you know, take caught that touchdown with like five minutes left or something. So, yeah. I think I, the other thing I remember is just like the lack of, you know, Charlie Weiss just having some, you know, stupid response afterwards, but that ended up being his last season. Like he had kind of course corrected, you know, got the ship righted and boom, everything blew up once November came because his no, his teams in November, especially those last couple of years were not good. So he ends up getting fired. It's funny that ESPN article went back and they found some archive board messages from Michigan State fans. But for Golden Tate, it would be one thing if you run into your own band, but what G Tate did was unclassy said someone on the Michigan State Board. It looks somewhat intentional to me. I hope Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio raises a stink about it. And then the other, the last one, the more I see of N.D. this season, the less I respect of them and Weiss. And I'm sure that those were some of the tame things that were going up on the message boards as well. And they talked to Golden about the whole, like, he didn't plan, you know, that the band was down there in that corner of the end zone, the opposing band was sitting down there and he was running out of real estate. And so he had, it ended up, he had like three steps, he could either go full speed and just, you know, crash into whoever was sitting there at the front, and then he said, you know, like midway, he just, the thought flashed through his head. It's like, I'll just do a little leap, you know, rather than run over the clarinet player, whoever it happened to be. He said there was like a little girl there who looked like the clarinet player or something. So he goes up and he does the swan dive, expecting that some of these Michigan state band members are going to brace his fall and the seas parted and he just ends up biting it on the plastic folding chairs that were sitting there. So it was pretty impromptu, you know, do you want to, do I want to smoke one, you know, one person or do I kind of want to, you know, hit a hit a few people here and distribute out the love a little bit. And I think it's funny because I don't, you know, didn't plan on it. And so that's kind of the result. And then also it's like, why is the band so close? You know, that's the counter side of it. If you don't want your band being run into, don't have them so close to the end zone. And maybe that's when they started putting the band up in the top corner of the end zone it like maybe it was after that maybe that prompted it that whole incident. I don't know because I, I barely remember the band being down there. And then obviously in recent years, it's, you know, again, it's been, they've stuck the band up there at the top of the stadium instead where they were they put the opposing fan section and stuff like that. Maybe that's what kind of got the whole ball rolling in that direction. But anyway, happy golden take day. Happy WKRP day. Let's talk some Notre Dame football today. No injury updates that were given. Marcus Freeman was asked about Josh Burnham. First question and Josh Burnham status, how he's looked in practice, what's his health look like availability and Marcus Freeman said, we're not talking about injuries on Thursdays. Look at the, look at the notes that we gave you on Monday. And refer to that for player availability. So noted aim. Again, if you haven't heard about it, they started putting out every Monday before Marcus Freeman's press conference in the notes, the game notes section, they put an injury report in there. And that's going to be the only reference that and whatever he says on Monday in terms of, of injury. So no late week injury updates. So we're not sure Josh Burnham. We're not sure Jordan phase on. He would have come up. I'm sure as well, had we been able to ask about that, but no injury updates. So just it's got to be wait and see in terms of Josh Burnham and his ankle. Remember, he heard it a couple of weeks ago, late late in the game against Northern Illinois. Well, a guy who got hurt last week, of course, unfortunately was Jordan, but Telho. Viper defensive in, Buba car, Treyori made a great play late in the first half, intercepted that pass, returned it for a touchdown defensive highlight of the game. But what do things look like behind. Buba car, Treyori, could Kingston, Villiamo, Asa kind of help out there at Viper Logan Thomas, Jr. Tuya Lomaka, also in the mix. Here's Freeman's response. No, he's playing linebacker, but Logan will be available and has a chance to play on Saturday. Had a good week of practice. Buba car is in a really good job and stepping up in the starting rolling. And Jr.'s had probably one of his best weeks of practice. So looking forward to seeing all three of them out there on Saturday, being competitive and getting their job done. No, Kingston, Villiamo, Asa, and he seemed like kind of maybe a natural fit because he is so good with the pass rush, but they're not going to go that direction. So it'll be Buba car, Treyori, Jr. Tuya Lomaka, who's kind of yet to making any kind of real impact and then true freshman Logan Thomas. So what's your confidence in the Viper position right now? Well, I feel like it's, it can't be really high because now you're asking, you know, a true freshman to be a starter and it sounds like Logan Thomas who also is going to be a true freshman to be a backup. And then, you know, Tulia Lomaka, someone who hasn't played a ton of fiber before came in as a linebacker. So, you know, not a lot of game experience at the position, so my overall confidence would have to be somewhere around a six or seven out of ten. And the other reason it's that high is because of what we've seen out of Treyori so far, but not having Botello and Burnham could potentially be, you know, a big talking point in the game this weekend, especially if, you know, Notre Dame's not able to set the edge like they like they did, or like they weren't able to do against NIU. And so that's something I would look forward to, you know, in Miami of Ohio's, you know, game plan this week, they probably know that they have young and experienced, you know, ends and how can we, you know, capitalize on something like that. Yeah, I mean, and especially if you don't have Josh Burnham on the other side as well, I think that there is, I think there's a, like everyone's really, you know, in on Bryce Young, for example, flying Beagle and some others, like Logan Thomas, we haven't got to see him yet. I'm kind of with you, like, like my confidence would probably be a nine just for Buba Corps, Buba Carr, Treyori himself. But if I'm looking at the depth of the entire position because you've got to have more than one, it's not just going to be him out there for all, you know, close to a, you know, 75, 80 snaps or whatever it ends up being. He can't play the whole game and that's such a big part of how Notre Dame's defensive line is able to make impact with the depth that they have at that position. So, like, I like to be on a mock a plate a little bit last week, as well. And he seemed to do fine. There weren't any mistakes or anything like that. But again, he wasn't going out there. Making place, nowhere near what what Buba Carr was making like when you have Batello and Buba Carr together like that was something and so obviously it's going to be hit with Batello. So, it'll be one to watch going forward, especially how they perform against a team like Miami this week because you would expect their play to be even better this week against Miami than whoever, you know, whatever other power five teams you play the rest of the way. So, receivers, a couple different receivers came up as well. Jaden Greathouse, part of the show title today as some may have noticed that no salty took notice, of course, right away. Had a low snap count last week, 12 snaps last week was that's because of some of the 12 personnel that Notre Dame was playing like what was the thought behind the low snap count for Jaden Greathouse. We wanted to probably be in a little bit more 12 personnel to start the game versus Purdue just the way to try to attack their defense that we thought would give us the best chance to have success. And then, you know, he didn't play much in the second half just because of the lead and wanted to give some other guys some opportunities. But he did a great job again with the opportunity had the first half and we had a 25 yard catch that was negated by the holding penalty so Jaden did a, you know, exactly what we asked out of them. So more 12 personnel last week and then, of course, means one running back, two tight ends, two wide receivers on the field as opposed to three wide receivers if you were playing 11 personnel for persons for wide receivers if you were playing. In 10 personnel, do you think we see maybe more 12 again this week like what, what do you think in the direction could be that they end up going. Yeah, I do think that you're going to see a lot of, you know, maybe 12 personnel and if we're lucky, you know, 21 22 personnel even because I think Notre Dame has found. I think Notre Dame has found it's, you know, sort of identity, and that's being a very physical powered downhill type of run team, and that includes their quarterback as well. And so naturally, what do you need if you're, if you want, you know, a good powerful dynamic run game unique guys who can block well, you know, on the perimeter. And I just think that Bo Collins, Jaden Thomas, Mitchell Evans, like those are the guys that you would more so kind of want securing the perimeter compared to Jaden Greyhouse. They're just bigger bodies. They can seal, you know, the edge, that sort of stuff. And I just think that schematically when you're trying to run, you know, pulling guards, pulling tackles, all kinds of, you know, pulling motion that, again, someone bigger body like Jaden Thomas, Bo Collins, who's, you know, really excellent blocker in the run game are more so going to see the field in those type of situations. Yeah, I agree as well. And I think that they want to make sure, I think they want to leave no doubt against Miami this week after what happened to him a couple of weeks ago against Northern Illinois so I can see kind of more physicality, especially early on, and kind of see how that goes. I mean, I agree with you like the 21 personnel. I think that almost everyone just gets so excited about the idea of 21. There was even some 22 last week, just little little flashes of it, little teases. I think maybe that's something to kind of sprinkle in to tell, you know, some of these other teams that are coming up, you better be ready for this. And I think there is still a balance with it. I think Great House is still someone that you can use more in a, you know, a more potent RPO attack, I guess you could say, you know, someone who you can get in motion, kind of like that, you know, that play that we keep bringing up against Texas and Emory goes in motion and runs kind of the quick out and gets that big first down. That's the type of plays that he needs to be, you know, in on just kind of a lot of quick hitting, you know, kind of over over the middle, shorter route, intermediate routes and also kind of, you know, on the perimeter as well. So I think that there's going to be, you know, I think there's a place for Jin and Great House, but I don't see him as someone who needs to be on the field 24 seven, especially when you're trying to get into, you know, some of those run personnel's that are that are going to be just more physical and downhill. And these sailors asking, you know, yeah, I mean, they can obviously still play a slot receiver in 12. I mean, they can do, I mean, because there are two receivers on the field. It's, it's just a matter of who the tight end who, you know, who you're going to put where, you know, where where's the tight end going to, you know, where the two tight ends going to be and, and all that different kind of, and especially with a guy like Great House, you would think that they could fit him on, you know, but again, like that, that's what Freeman said was part of the reason between the fact that it ended up being a blowout. They didn't blame in the second half. And then the 12 personnel to start the game. And I agree with what DJ is saying as well. You know, because this is kind of where I was going to go next. It just feels like Great House is someone they should easily be able to involve more in terms of getting the ball. But look, as we all know, pass game is not firing on all cylinders right now. So, you know, that, that has something to do with it. But at the same time, Bo Collins is the number one receiver on the team. Jaden Great House is the number two receiver on the team. Collins has 12 catches. Great House has eight. Great House just feels like someone who. Riley Leonard should just be able to feed the ball at will, if he wants, just because of, you know, one because of his own size to because of his hands, you know, like it doesn't have to be deep stuff I've, I've said before it and I realize. Teams don't use the middle of the field in the passing game as much anymore. But because of the size mismatch is coming out of the slot that Great House has. It just feels like an easy mismatch, where, you know, if the other team is, is playing man to man just just just a quick slant by Leonard Great House could really go a long way. Yeah. And Great House also needs to, you know, catch, catch all the balls that come his way. He had a big opportunity missed against Northern Illinois and those sort of things. I'm not saying that plays into it, but, you know, your quarterback doesn't that loses a little bit of that trust and confidence at the end of the day, right? Like that was a big, big moment rather than make a big, probably one of his best throws of the season. And, you know, it hit off Great House's hands. So, you know, I think that that's something to consider as well. You got to be consistent when your number is being called. Yeah, Brian asked if Great House is open and not being looked at. That's a lot of the receivers. Unfortunately, right now it seems like, but, you know, as, as Marcus Freeman mentioned in that clip though as well. Remember, he had a 21 year or 25 year reception. Then ended up getting called back last week against Purdue because of a holding penalty, you know, so it just completely wiped out what would have been one of the bigger plays of the season to this point had it not been called back. So, but again, it feels like he's a guy, Great House is a guy who they should really be able to get going. And, you know, as we've talked about, give Riley Leonard some layups and get him some confidence. He, like, Great House just feels like someone who can be a part of that. And, you know, just kind of get things kick started, I guess. Hey Irish Breakdown listeners, it's Urban Meyer. This fall the game changes. Join me. Another wide receiver that Marcus Freeman talked about, Chris Mitchell, who had over 1100 yards at Florida International last year, Chris is a great job of coming in learning a new offense. You know, it's hard to play the white out position because a lot of times you can do exactly what you're supposed to do, but you know, you don't get credit because you don't get the catches or the yardage. You know, I can't speak any more highly of Chris Mitchell in terms of what he's done for our offense, the threat that he is and if the game dictates that he has a lot of catches, I won't be surprised. But, again, as a wide receiver, you're just a product of what the offense needs at that moment in the quarterbacks decision making. And, you know, but I don't think his stats or reflection of the value he has to our offense. How can they make Chris Mitchell more a factor? I mean, this really comes down to just whether or not the quarterback sees it, doesn't it? I still think that you can do more, I think it's kind of like a natural progression with the way this running game is coming along. I think you start to open up kind of that 10 to 15 yard window potentially with kind of like your tight ends. That's kind of the next progression that I would see in terms of working down field. And then once you start hitting, you know, maybe some 10 to 15 yard routes. That's when you hit the home run ball because now you've got an effective run game. You've got linebackers and safeties who have to worry about tight ends kind of coming over that middle zone of the field. And then you start hitting that. And then you kind of have the Chris Mitchell over the top. You know, kind of, I guess you would say using a speed to sneak past everyone because they're so lured in by, you know, the run game and the short kind of passes to your tight ends that you can start to hit those home runs over the top to Chris Mitchell. So, you know, I think what's unfortunate is football, the last 5, 10 years has really shifted into this, you know, offensive. Let's throw the ball, score a lot of touchdowns, a lot of receiving yards, a lot of passing yards. But noting just really that's not what they're going to be good at this season or what they're going to be the best at. And so I think you have to get really good in the run game. And then naturally stuff like Chris Mitchell and those deeper passes will come later on in the season. Again, once you've lured teams in with this kind of, you know, heavy personnel power run game. You know, and if we're not if we're not running the ball, we're dumping it out, you know, download to our tight ends or our fast running backs and wide receivers in the flat, essentially. So, you know, I just think that deeper stuff is going to come later in the season. And that's fine because, again, their, their offense is going to have to run through its run game. And we, yeah. And I mean, we've talked about it. They, they've just got, he, he's just got to show some progress one week to the next. Last week was at least a little bit of progress. I knew it's hard to see just in terms of the passing game. But I think that as you were saying it as we've said this week. This offense just kind of works through that run game, you go through Jeremiah love, you go through Jadari and Price, and then you get what you get out of Riley Leonard as well. Then I think the passing game ultimately starts to fall in place because you can just work so much off of that by basically getting guys so open potentially that that Riley Leonard would have a hard time not hitting them, I think, at the end of the day. When you've got so much speed out there with Chris Mitchell. So, I don't know, we'll see. I'm curious to see kind of how things evolve this week against Miami, Ohio, again, another Mac opponent coming to town. Got a lot of WKRP comments coming in sloppy Joe skews to the younger side. So, of course, he thinks WKRP is, is over overrated. He says, not as good as my mother the car. I don't know about that. That's the old Jerry Van Dyke show. I think if I'm not mistaken, my mother car, I could never get into that thing. And I don't know what one has to do with the other because I think that that thing was, you know, like at least 10 years before WKRP.
