[Music] Good morning and welcome in to the kit. [Music] Sorry, I'm trying to wake Jesse's ass up. Good morning and welcome in to the Cap and J Good morning show on the ESPN 1000. And we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. Don't forget we've got Courtney Cronin coming your way at 835 with the latest on the bears. We got the pics at 818. Yes, we will bring our ass indeed and a shot or no shot. Here's Jack McGrath. Good morning guys, how's it going? Good AI, what's up baby? AI, what do you have cooking in the computer there? What are you programmed? Oh, don't piss him off. Oh, here he goes. He's already upset. [Laughs] Jack, what is, you know what's up then? It's going to be a great college football Saturday. I'm ready for it. We're going to have a great NFL Sunday. It's going to be fantastic. Another great weekend of football. I'm ready for it. I'm excited. Let's start off with the bears though, and this weekend's game against the Colts. So the bears are still underdogs in this game at minus one and a half, or bears are plus one and a half, Colts are minus one and a half. I feel like the national perspective on this game is a little bit different than our perspective. I feel like a lot of fans are going in thinking the bears should win this game. Shot or no shot, the bears should be favored in this game. That's a great question. If you had the cap line, cap, you would give what? Bears minus three? Two and a half. Two and a half three? They haven't proven it yet, so I understand it. Colts are desperate. They've got to get a win to get off the Schneider. Otherwise, they're all in three and staring and not making the playoffs again. So it's a big game from that perspective. This is our Colts. This is our year. We love them. We love them. You've got to go and run it down their throat, man. That's the key to the game. Well, I guess the question is, is this a layup for all of us then? If you get the Colts minus one and a half, you think the bears are going to win. Is this a layup? The big is going to get killed here by the time we get to... There's a lot of people that believe the Colts are going to win the football game. I mean, a lot of handicappers that follow, they've got the Colts winning. Are you taking the Colts cap? No, one of my top plays of the weekend is the Bears. My best bet of the weekend was the Jets. So Jack, we talked about the beginning of the show. The storyline is that if the Colts go on three, that'll be all. Correct. And again, they're at home. I feel like the advantage goes to them because they're at home from a gambler standpoint. Like, at Lucas Oil, we're going to give you at least one and a half. But we just feel like the Bears will have some momentum coming off the Texans game, in which they were not blown out. They fell short because the offensive line in the offense wasn't good. But I'm taking the Bears. I haven't bet it yet, but I'm going to click Bears. Colts might be desperate. They might send the book at the Bears. Pull out every stop. All the trick plays. Everything they have. I think that's one of the reasons why it's one and a half. They feel like it's a desperate 0-2 team. It's absolutely a desperate team. They've got talent. Just because the Forrest Buckner and Lotu may not play. Did you see that throw Anthony Richardson made in week one, Alec Pierce? Chicago's very own. We called his brother, Kate and Pierce's game against Ronnie James. Oh, yeah, dude. We did? Yeah. Okay. Remember at Wind Trust? Yes, I did. And that's his brother. Alec Pierce played at Cincinnati. He's a stud. And remember that throw by Richardson? It's one of the best throws I've ever seen. There's flashes there, but flashes to get you fired also. Correct. So there's a flash though. So, Jack, do you? So I think that asked the question again. Should the Bears be favored in this game? I think that they should be. I think that's a shot they should be. But it'd be close line. The Bears haven't proven anything yet. They haven't. That's the fact of the matter. But this is a game you've got to get healthy. In my mind, yes. But we're going to find out. Jack, what's next? So Shohei Otani last night was phenomenal. First 50-50 player in MLB history. Last night, he went six for six, two doubles, three home runs, ten RBIs, two stolen bases. He's overrated. Major League Baseball put out an article today saying this could be the best offensive performance of all time. Shot or no shot. This game was more impressive than Kerry Wood's 20 strikeout game. I mean... No, that's a shot. That's a shot. You know, in all of this, Cap, he didn't strike out, then walk. Didn't have to. Correct. Six for six with ten RBIs in the game. You and I have seen five for five, four for four. We've seen three home run games from a player. Four home run plays. Is it Tuffy Rhodes? Tuffy Rhodes had three home runs. Mark Whitten hit four home runs. Kiss the Sox? I don't know if it was against the Sox, but I remember him doing that. I... Cap, that's an amazing day. Incredible. I don't know if it's better than Kerry Wood's 20 strikeout game. That's the highest scored pitch game in the history of baseball, where they keep the game score. That's the number one game of all time. Kerry Wood's nine inning 20 strikeout. One hit, which could have been an error. Domination of a good Houston Astros team with Bagwell and BG and Derrick Bell and the rest of them. I mean, it's six to one half dozen or another, but they're also one off. You never... You don't see those. Like what he did yesterday, Otani. You'll probably never do again. Maybe you will, but I mean, he's a Hall of Fame player. It's what you expect. It's not an interesting thing about this, Jack. It is... It's a shot for me. He's worth every dime. Every day... Dave Roberts said that after the game. Yeah, every deferred dollar. He's worth it all. By the way, him doing this in Miami, this is the same Miami, the same stadium in which Otani struck out Mike Trout in the world baseball classic. Same place. There's a lot of symmetry there. And six for six with ten RBIs is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen from one individual player in Major League Baseball. He carried the ball club to a clincher. Twenty to four? Come on, man. Come on, ten RBIs. Three homers? Yeah, he's incredible. I mean, it's... It is unbelievable. He's... Again, he's getting $700 million. We were like, "What?" He's earning it. And by the way, he will finally, after almost 700 games in his career, will make the postseason. Yeah, first time in the postseason for him. Yeah. No other player in Major League Baseball has had to wait this long to get to the postseason. Otani is finally going to get there. What do you mean? What are the criteria when you say no other player? Because Trout's never been in the playoffs. Major League Baseball. Yeah. You remember, Trout's missed a lot of time, too. He has. So, Otani right now... In terms of number of games? Yeah. It would be Trout, but he's never available. So, Otani is finally going to make the playoffs, and he does that. It's incredible. Supposedly they're going to move Trout maybe to first base. Yeah. Fine. Yeah. I mean, whatever can get him on the field, that'd be great. Keep him healthy. Say what you want to say about Chris Bryant. I don't expect Chris Bryant to be Mike Trout, but the idea that Mike Trout cannot stay on the field. That's horrendous. Yeah. Street clothes, Anthony Davis. Holy cow. Great. All right, Jack. I was sticking on this subject. Forty-seven players in all of Major League Baseball history have achieved a 30-30 season. Six of those have come in the last two years. So, it's becoming more and more common to have a 30-30 season. We've now seen a 50-50 season from Show Hey Otani. Shot or no-shot, a 30-30 season is no longer really that special, and 40-40 is the new 30-30, because we've had two of those in the past two years. Uh, I'm going to say no-shot. 30-30 is still super impressive. Super impressive. Yeah, it's still impressive, and you can run like that. Acuna Jr, who's out again with an ACL injury, he's a 40-40 guy. Soriano was a 40-40 guy. Like, those are rare. 50-50? That's an entirely different universe. Yeah, I would say that it's all impressive, Jack. All of it. The 30s, the 40s, and of course with Otani being 50-50, over 50-50 now, is just incredible to me. I mean, so we're talking about one of the all-time greats now, before we even steps into the postseason. Think about that. All the numbers he's put up, and he's doing it in a Dodger uniform. So now we have to have the conversation about all-time great Dodgers, and as long as Otani's got to be there, will he be in that top five of great Dodgers of all time? Otani? Not based on this year, but his tenure with the Dodgers before it's all squared away. Could he be in that top five? Definitely top ten. Could he be in the top five? Could he be in the top five? Well, let's take a look. Hang on. Let's see what happens in the postseason, too, now, because all this regular season stuff is great, but you know you make your bones in the postseason. Correct. You're facing 1s, 2s, and 3s. Oh, we're not getting a spot starter today. Yeah. We're getting the best of the best. The bullpen shortens. Yeah, it gets tight. Sure, it's one of the great accomplishments if we've ever seen. 50/50? It's insane. It's truly insane. And he hasn't pitched yet. He hasn't even pitched for the team. It's to the point where if he's got to be this good, he may not ever pitch again. It's incredible. He didn't have to. No. Jeez. Yeah, he's amazing. Now, imagine that in the Cubs uniform. Here's Jack. Oh, boy. You'll be a 60/60 guy. Really? Yeah, probably. How about if he was a Yankee with a short porch and right field? Oh, yeah. All right, Jack. All right. One more. So Kevin Fishbane of the athletic did his like mailbag piece, and he wrote about Montez Sweat's numbers. Just three pressure so far, no sack so far for Sweat. Shot or no shot, Montez Sweat this season has been underwhelming through the first two games. That's a no shot. Yeah, that's a no shot. Go back and put the tape on and see how many guys they're using to block. Yeah. He's getting doubled. He's getting out. I saw a play where he gets double team, then there goes a running back. Give him a shot as he goes by the chip on him. No. He has not been underwhelming. Yeah. That's what Fishbane said as well. He said basically he's being double team, then it's opening up for other guys. Yeah. Right? That's a no shot. When I want Sweat to be Aiden Hutchinson, sure, but again, this opens the door for Billings. This opens the door for others to be able to get to the quarterback. I like that actually. Sweat will get his, but the double team of Sweat opens the door for others to be able to eat because that's the big question we had coming in along with the offensive line is who would get to the quarterback and Sweat's one of them and then it's Sweat and the drips as Jay Moore says. So that's what's happening. The drips are getting to the quarterback there. We saw Sandborn get a sack, so Billings force a fumble. Yeah. Sandborn. He had Sandborn. You're unbelievable. We saw Tremaine. Edmonds get a sack. Yeah. Sandborn. Totally. By the way, Nightmare III, Nightmare 262 says, "Guys, trot did make the playoffs in 2014." Why do I not remember him in the playoffs? One of the angels make the playoffs. They did. I don't remember that. You must not have done much. I think I said, this year, out of all the players in Major League Baseball, he's the one that has not been to the playoffs, out of all the active players. It's been-- Yeah, you don't have to. Yeah. I mean, this guy says you're correct because he said trot actually made it way back in 2014. I can't remember that. Oh, they won the division. And then loss to the Royals swept in three straight. Mm. Yeah. So that's it. All right. Coming up, we have the picks. And that's coming up next right here on "Cap and Jhood." "Cap and J--" Jhood are back. And you know this, man. Chicago's home for sports, ESPN Chicago. And now it's time for the picks. Here on the "Cap and Jhood Morning" show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app, watch the shows and all the shows on YouTube, YouTube.com. For ESPN Chicago. And hit that subscribe button. That way you missed nothing from ESPN Chicago on our YouTube channel. Time for the picks. Here's Jack McGrath. All right. Should we go through the records from last week and overall? Go right ahead, sir. All right. Last week, Shea went four and six. Jay Moore, four and six. Jay Hood, three and seven. And "Cap" in the lead at five and five. Overall, Shea is nine and 11. Hood's nine and 11. Jay Moore's 11 and nine and "Cap"'s 12 and eight. All right. Let's take a look at week three. Here's Jack McGrath. All right. Starting off in the college football slate, Illinois and Nebraska minus seven and a half. Nebraska favor. The Huskers have been significantly better on both sides of the football under Matt Rule. Nebraska cap ranks 23rd in the country and total yards per game and points allowed per game. Illinois has got Luke Altmeyer at quarterback. He's excelled 647 yards in six touchdowns while producing zero turnovers in three games. I think it's going to be a daunting task for Illinois at Nebraska. Give me Nebraska minus seven and a half. Rayola, the Nebraska quarterback, highest-paid quarterback among all the new starters in college football, making North, they're saying I was reading yesterday, North of a million and a half dollars. He's really, really good. Nebraska has turned that thing around. That program is rolling. However, this is a massive statement game for Illinois. And while I do not believe that they will leave as victors for Memorial Stadium and Lincoln, Nebraska, they will cover the seven and a half. Give me the fighting line. Jack. Well, I'm in for Shea. Shea sent me his picks and he has Nebraska in this game. I will say this is the first time Nebraska has hosted a top 25 opponent since 2013. I think that place is going to be electric. So I would also take Nebraska, more. I will also take Nebraska as well. Jack. All right. Next game USC at Michigan, staying in the Big Ten with USC, taken on the reigning national chance plus five and a half USC is favored over Michigan. Yeah, so this is the first time that these two teams are scoring off since 1958 or G is the quarterback for Michigan. Of course, they switched their quarterback to orgies, attempted just seven career passes in three seasons at Michigan. USC has enough firepower to be able to exploit some of the soft spots in the defense of Michigan. Give me USC minus five and a half against Michigan at the Big House. USC is traveling from the Pacific to the, I believe that's the Eastern time zone. It may still be sexual, but it's still a major change for them. This is their first foray into Michigan in maybe forever. Why do not think the Wolverines are going to win the football game? They run plenty of five star recruits at you. Michigan will not get punked. They won't win. They're going to lose, but they will cover the five and a half. Give me the Wolverine. They just did it. These guys did it, man. Shea takes USC in this one. I really don't love the quarterback switch and such a big matchup. USC. I'm going Michigan. I think they're putting together some wins after last week. So I think that this particular time, I think they're going to really smash USC. Jack. All right. Tennessee travels into Oklahoma, Tennessee favored in this one by seven points. The Vols under hit coach Josh Apple have not been very good as far as big games in the road. Historically, however, the quarterback Niko has been very good. It's his first start, though, in a hostile environment. Watch the line of scrimmage in this one here. Oklahoma's offensive line has not been great. The Vols have won the best offensive lines in the country. Oklahoma has struggled to put points on the board. However, because it's on the road for Josh Apple, give me Oklahoma plus seven. USC wins the ball game cap. Tennessee finds a way to win the ball game, but give me Oklahoma in this spot. Yeah, I really like this Tennessee team. Nothing against Oklahoma. It's not a rivalry game for me. It's just a really good football game that my son and I are going to cook some stakes and watch, but my friend Anthony goes to Tennessee. He and his mom are good friends. So I'll roll with my friends, my homies. Give me the Vols. My homies. That's awful. Go ahead. Uh, Shea takes Oklahoma in this one. Personally, I think Tennessee's being a bit overlooked as a top six team in the nation. I think they will go in and cover this game, but Shea's going to take Oklahoma. I'm rolling with Shea. I'm going to take Oklahoma as well. I think Tennessee wins the ball game. I just think that it's the first time that this young quarterback is going to be in a loud, hostile environment in Norman. And I just think that I'm looking forward to a good ball game closer than the experts think. Closer. That guy. Hupul. He's a really good coach. That is name. Uh, Josh Hypell, as I said twice already. Hype. Yeah. Yeah. Looks like Hupul to me. H-E-U. I usually would call it Hupul. Hypell with the homies. Hypell with the homies. Yeah. That's, that's awesome. Let's go Vols. Here's Jack. Off to the NFL. Texans at Vikings. Vikings are getting two in this game. Uh, the Vikings are quarterback Sam Darnell against the Texans pass rush. That's what we're looking at right here. Michael Collins, as we know from last Sunday, was exceptional against the Bears, 135 yards and a touchdown. He's the only player, by the way, in the NFL with two 100 yards games this season. Uh, give me the Texans against the Vikings. Texans minus two. Yeah. While the Vikings are off to a nice start, I still don't think they're a legitimate, contending team. That Texans team is legit. They won't have 12 penalties for 100 and whatever number of yards. Give me the Texans. Shay is taking the Texans as well. Vikings seem like they're having a dream start to the season. I think the wheels are going to fall off at some point soon in one of these tougher match ups. This is the matchup. I think it happens. That's right. Reality check hits them in the soda. I'm rolling with the Texans. Jack. Next game. Eagles at Saints. Saints have been the surprise team so far. They're favored by two and a half. So the Eagles have allowed 175 yards, uh, as far as the rush is concerned, they only have three sacks. The Eagles have allowed 11 rushing plays of 10 plus yards. Now they take on Kamara, Alvin Kamara, um, 5.7 yards per carry. I kind of think that the Eagles find the way to win the ball game. Give me the Eagles plus two and a half against the Saints. But this Saints team was not predicted for greatness, norling had fired Dennis Allen by like week nine, Dennis Allen sitting there going, yeah, hold on a second, Shay. We're two and all. We just eviscerated caps Cowboys in Dallas, 43 to 19. However, the Eagles have a lot of firepower, a lot of weapons. I really like this matchup, but in the end, I'm going to buy into the New Orleans Saints for a week. Give me the Saints minus the two and a half. Jack. Just fine. Turn your Michael. She has also taken the Saints in this one. I would agree with him as well. I seem to run a lot to the outside. Eagles strength is in the middle. You know, it's something not right, or you don't like the Eagles. Yeah, the Eagles. I had them last week and you know, you saw what happened there. But to me, it's like they're not clicking. And if AJ Brown is still out, I don't know if he's playing, I'm gonna just roll with the Saints. Uh, Jaymore, do me a favor, check, uh, AI Jack's battery life. How much does he have left? Let me just check it out, please. I hit the button. It didn't light up. The mic didn't turn on. It didn't happen. So how much, how much you see there in the computer has 62% got left to last us to the end of the show? Okay. Because at the end, who knows what's going to happen? So he's already peedering out on us. Long week, I know, two days, AI, next game, please. Big game coming up for the Ravens. They need to bounce back at the Cowboys. Cowboys are getting one and a half points in this game. Man, oh man, you know, Dallas has given up the most points consecutive home games in 1992 since the winless expansion team in 1960 back in the old cotton bowl days, 93 back to back. That's a lot. You know, Cap, I think that the Cowboys find a way to win the ball game. I do. Ravens, uh, their first 0 and 2 starts since 2015, I think the Cowboys find a way to win the ball game. I think they get it done at, at, at Jerry World. I like the Cowboys. Yeah. I'm with you. I do think they find a way to get it done, uh, to better team than they showed last week. They had their lunch money taken. Give me the Cowboys. Here we go. Chase taking the Ravens and this one I would as well. The Ravens secondary is bound to bounce back. They returned everybody from last year. It doesn't make sense that they're not playing well right now. Oh, Ravens. I'll roll with the Ravens as well. Next game. Lions at Cardinals. Cardinals are getting three in this game. Arizona's win was dominant all phases. I mean, James Connor ran for 122 yards cap and of course, on the other side, eight in a hundred and send three sacks in the opening quarter, uh, last week's loss against Tampa. You finished with four and a half sacks giving them a five and a half in the season. You know, I feel like this is going to be a closer game. I think the Lions can win the game, but I think the Lions closer. I, I give me, um, give me the Cardinals plus three in this one don't, don't be surprised if the Lions win the game, but I think the Cardinals can give it close. Yeah. The Lions are coming off a tough loss. Dan Campbell just had to put his house on the market because as he said, whoa, there's plenty of space. It's on two acres. The home's beautiful. It's just that people figured out where we live when we lost. He told cranes, Detroit business, Dan Campbell's closing ranks. He's going to get something a little more privacy. He's going to come in on a business trip and he's going to drill the Cardinals and Kyler Murray. Give me the lions. She's got the lines as well. I'm with cap two. I don't think the this line's team loses two in a row, especially to the Cardinals here. Same here. I'll take the line. Next game we've got Packers at Titans Titans favored by two and a half points. All right. We'll pass. Cap. No, no. Sorry. No passing allowed. Well, I need your help. Is this the one I'm not sure about? So we know what happened with Malik Willis and the Packers. And again, they ran a hell out of the ball to win that ball game. The Titans on the other end can't not nearly impress. I feel like I want to lean Packers. But what do you think? I'll ask you. What do you think? You want me to make my pick first? I just want you to help me to come to a consensus. I think my pick will be your pick because I'm not sure about this game. So in the line, it is two and a half. Ryan Callahan came out with a vote of support for. Will love us. And I guarantee you there were some tough times watching that film as a team or in the quarterback room where he made another gaff that cost them a football game. That's two weeks in a row. Yeah. I think they're going to come in with that front. They're going to do a good job against the pack or run game, which will force Malik Willis to have to beat them. I am going with the Titans in the win. Shae takes the Titans. I'll take the Titans as well. We've been talking about the Titans run defense and the pass rush and how it crushed the bears. I don't think the Packers can win this game without running the ball really, really well. And because I don't trust Malik Willis to win the game by throwing the ball. For that reason, I'll take the Titans. And Jay Moore passes. That's right. You know, I've never bet the packs. All right. Titans. Titans. And Hoodies has the Titans. I guess so. Yeah. I think Cap talked me into it. I wasn't sure about this game because we know that Willis will start on Sunday. Correct? Yeah. Will be Willis. I think it's still up in the air. It's up in the air. I don't think they're going to put love. I don't think love's going to play. I don't. If you know who's going to play, well, that's a tough defensive front for anybody. Correct. Okay. I'm just going to roll with this. I have no idea about this one, but I'll roll with the Titans with you guys. All right, Jack. We got two more before we hear from Courtney Cronin. We do Trevor Lawrence needs a bounce, but bounce back with the Jaguars Jaguars at Bill's Bills favored by five. Give me the bills minus five. Wow. I really want to take the Jaguars. I really, really do, but they just haven't earned the respect enough for me to go. All right. I'm rolling with you, even though I do think they have a chance to be really tough in this game, but I'll take the bills. I'm going to earn it. Shay's going to take the bills. I'll also take the bills. I'm with you, Cap. Their offense hasn't shown that they can compete in high scoring games, and I think the bills are going to eat them up. So I'll take the bills. Bills, bills. Last game. The Bears at the Colts. Definitely. He else. Yeah, let's go to see. That's these challenges. Checked in. I love the Bears. Bears and Colts minus one and a half Colts favored. The Bears get the job done, Cap. Never mind about the line. The Bears win on the road and the Colts go 0 and 3. Yep. I think the Bears will run the football. Their defense will play a good football game. Harass Anthony Richardson, where he's going to go, God, I'm glad they're out of town. Bears win the football game. So give me the Bears. I'm nervous. I don't know what Vegas is seeing that we're not thinking that with us thinking that the Bears should maybe be favored in this game. I'll take the Bears. Shay'll take the Bears as well, but I'm a little bit I'm nervous, but I think the Bears pull it out. Bears over here all day. Your robot. You're not supposed to have feelings. Well said. All right, coming up, Courtney Cronin with the latest on the Bears and the Colts. This is our Colts. This is our team. We bleed blue. This is our Colts, but they're win or lose. We love them for the shoe Colts for let the world hear us now. This is our team. We don't know what we're going to do. We love the brother next year. Follow Chicago's home for sports on Twitter at ESPN1000. Cap and Jay Hood are back on ESPN Chicago, Chicago's home for sports. They're beak out of this. You have to temper expectations if you are a Bears fan. Just given everything that this team had to kind of undo, breaking down the Bears and the latest NFL storyline polls was given the flexibility and the freedom to take this thing down to the ground floor down to the studs to be able to build it back up. Courtney Cronin with Cap and Jay Hood on ESPN 1000 Chicago's home for sports. Courtney Cronin is on the hotline. That'd be the car X tire and auto hotline, John. Rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom. Keep your beak out of this. We'll be called the car X name. Good morning Courtney. How are you? I'm great guys. Happy Friday. Happy Friday, Courtney Cronin. So tell me, what does the weekend look like? Do you go to Bloomington to check out the three and oh Hoosiers and then cover Bears Colts? Because that's a good, I think that's a good weekend if you wanted to do that. It is. I've read my mind. I'm going down tonight. I'll be in Bloomington tomorrow for the game to watch them go to 4-0 and there have been some 4-0 IU teams that have disappointed after reaching that mark, but I'm confident in this group. That was a big win last week at UCLA. It was. So we'll have a little, like a steak, a little zogreb tonight down in Bloomington, maybe some cocktails at Nick's bar and then get ready to tailgate tomorrow like you're going to do the whole fan thing, right? So here's a fun fact. I've never been to a tailgate as an adult like the only tailgate I went to was during my freshman year, the ones that were in the off of 45 or off of 17th Street that are on the like the tailgating field for all the IU people. Like I'm going to wear the alumni go. I haven't been because I covered every game my sophomore year through senior year and I never made it back as an alum because I was, you know, football season. You're working. It's hard to get back there. Perfectly. I'm very happy about it. And if there will, I'm not a Nick's person though. I understand that that's like the alumni spot. Yeah. It's the one thing that probably makes me a terrible Indiana grad that I'm just like not Nick's is not my spot. It never has been. I don't like bids fries. I think things that biz is unsanitary. It's just, you know, it's not my fair place. It's not my fair place. There's many other places in Bloomington. I will be frequenting. All right, let's talk about this Colts Bears game. Look, they does not look like they're going to have a lot to. He hasn't been ruled out that I know of yet. And DeForest Buckner is on the injured reserve list. So he will not play for me and I've been screaming this all week to hoodie. You got to run the football and you got to run it downhill. It smashed people in the mouth and let's put our quarterback in third and three, third and two, third and four and not third nine, third and eleven. What is the number one thing you got to see? I mean, that that has to be it. If you don't run the ball on a team that's averaging, like giving up 237 rushing yards a game, if you can't do it on this group, then there's a serious issue and those issues will be magnified tenfold. Like if you think they're bad right now, if you think Shane Waldron is catching a lot of heat and justifiably so, but if they can't do that against this defense, the worst in the NFL, it's stopping the run through two games and there's going to be some serious concerns. I think going into that Rams game, the opportunity here against two teams coming up that are super injured, especially on defense with the Colts. And you mentioned the deforest Buckner injury. I know that their injury report yesterday, Kenny Morbeth was on it. They're definitely, they're banged up and the Bears on that front have the edge. So I would, I would say if that's not the immediate part of the game plan that you're able to like understand, you understand, hey, this is cognitive, this is what they're cognitively trying to do right off the bat on Sunday afternoon, then I question kind of like where they're trying to take this offensive identity because they haven't established it. We don't know what it is through two weeks. And if you don't, if you can't start to like chip away and figure out what that is week three, then then that's on the play call or ultimately. So yes, let's talk about Shane Waldron a little bit. So from your intel, his time with Seattle to what he is right now, what, why did Gino Smith and Waldron click? Was it because of their running game or, or, or Smith's prowess to throw the football because I like to see, see the balance for this football team for the Bears. Yeah, I mean, and just being honest about it, I feel like Dave Kanellis got a lot of the, you know, a lot of the flowers for Gino Smith comeback season in 2022. And it's, you know, Waldron was the OC then he coordinated that offense. They had a two running back system that was, you know, middle of the pack. They weren't a great rushing team. They weren't a bad rushing team, but they were definitely more balanced, you know, across the board and also having three really good receivers helped Gino Smith be able to get there too. But we just, we haven't seen the opportunity set up off of play action. We haven't seen the run game carry the load the way that it has to for a younger quarterback who is not trying to come back from something but trying to get something established from the very get go of his career. So there's, you know, those offenses in Seattle were right smack dab in the middle of the NFL in terms of yards, in terms of points of scoring in production. So it wasn't like they were doing anything that was like completely over the top of, oh, man, this could be a top 10 offense. They did the simple stuff the right way. And it just feels like that part has been lost through, or they can't find that through the first two weeks of the season because it's personnel usage questions that we're having about why is Gerald Everett playing as much as he is, why is Travis Homer in on third down as much as he is. It's those questions that I think have to get sorted out in order to know the direction that they're headed to know that what you saw during that Gino Smith season when Shane, when Shane Waldron was coordinated in that offense in Seattle can, you know, versions of that can show up here in Chicago. We'll have more with Courtney Cronin will break down some of the Bears injuries from this week who she expects to play and little Kayla Williams talk next. This is Romo Dunez is the Andre Swift, this is collagorda, you're listening to Captain Jay Hood on ESPN Chicago, the new home of the Chicago Bears. All right, more with Courtney. So Courtney, let's talk about the injuries first. I know Keenan Allen's dealing with the heel. I'm hearing it could be some planter, fast guy to switch, so we said it took him three years to over to be a hundred percent. I had it and it wasn't that long, but it took a while. How long are we going to not see this dude? You know, he hasn't been on the practice field since that Friday ahead of week one and he plays the game. He re-injures his heel or aggravates it. I know Hebrew flu said it's a pain tolerance thing, but I also, you know, if you can't go, it's not because all he's not tough enough, you know, anything along those lines. It's, I think, by and large, it's the effectiveness of his ability to play receivers dependent on his ability to plant off that foot, to move around, to cut, to do all of the things that are required of a receiver. And if he can't go, it's because he's limited in that respect. So today's a big day. We didn't see him on, yes, I'm on the bike yesterday for a little bit at the beginning of practice. They had a pretty lengthy injury report, mostly limited guys that you expect to, you know, be full participants today when they go through their walkthrough and then either questionable or no injury designation. But for Keenan Allen, you know, there's a lot of tension here just in the sense of what's at stake for him. He's in a contract year. He, you know, wants to prove that at 32, he's still got it, which I think he does. It's just unfortunate that this injury that popped up at the end of the preseason has carried over and now it was, you know, set him back a week and not being able to play last week and then leaving everything kind of up in the air for week three. You know, Courtney, the inactives is what I look for on Sundays that you send out on Twitter because it's always interesting to meet the numbers game when it comes to the roster. So last week, no valus jones. So do you expect valus jones to be active this week? You know what's interesting? Like they started the first, they started practices the last two weeks during individuals. He was with the running backs yesterday and Wednesday was the first time that I saw him back with the receiver group going through individual drills when they were, you know, the 10 minutes that we're out there getting to watch that. I don't know if it's just that, hey, we have all these other running backs. We can't figure out how to use. We don't need another one just sitting around collecting dust. We might all try to figure out some way to get him active, whether this means that he will be part of the game day roster or not. I think still remains to be seen because they, you know, made a very strong message to valus last week by making him inactive, not people not be on kickoff return. I can't fault anybody for that, but to have somebody around who is taking up a roster spot and if he's not doing anything, then you kind of wonder, what's the objective here? Are they just doing it to justify the third round pick? We've tried to give him every opportunity, but we can't find it this week. You know, Colin Johnson was elevated off the practice squad, just like a standard elevation. He wasn't signed to the active roster the way the long snapper was. So he goes back down now if they decide if like if Keenan Allen can't go and they decide to put Colin Johnson up again and make valus Jones inactive, well, I think that your kind of the writings on the wall about how much longer he'll be on the team, but this could be an opportunity considering the work that he's gotten in with the receivers this week that he sort of transitions back to that position. Don't know how many snaps will play or how what his role will be on offense, but if they can't find a way to run the ball with the running backs that they have, I don't think that valus Jones being part of that group makes a lot of sense. The reason why I asked the question, Cap, is because if Alan's out DJ Moore Adunze, Tyler Scott, and now DeAndre Carter, which we did not expect him to be part of this offense, now he's getting some receptions as well. He's getting targets. All right. So then how does valus Jones fit in that if you got to get Herbert more than just a couple of carries at some point, DeAndre Swift is the guy that's the load back, then that's why I don't know how he fits for this roster, especially if Tyler Scott's going to be eligible or active. Yeah, no, I mean, that's a great point because like what is his role here? So he's already so far down the depth chart offensively at running back and at receiver. I don't know that he has much of a role here and your point on Carter, I mean, the early on in that game, it felt like he was going to be the featured receiver and you've won. He had some good plays, but you can't not have a 10 target DJ Moore game if you expect to keep games close. And if you expect to win, who's behind him, though, should be Roma Dunes. They should be a big week for a Dunes day to break out and show that he can hang on to the ball in the end zone that he can, I mean, plan through an MCL sprain. That takes a lot of guts to do that because I'm sure he's probably like feeling the residual effects of that, but if he's healthy, he's got to be the number two receiver in this offense. There's no question about that. And then behind him, it's a big question mark. And I don't know if Bayless, you know, if we're talking about the guy that's like the fifth receiver right now on the roster, I don't really think there's much of a justification to get him targets over someone like the Andre Carter who has shown, you know, seven years in the league. He's a dependable guy. He might not be your top option, but he's a better option than what you have elsewhere. And you know, for Tyler Scott to justify why he's active too, this would probably be the week to do it considering and they're going to try to run the ball on Indianapolis. Indianapolis knows that they're going to try to give him some heavier boxes, which then should open up some opportunities in the passing game. And for a guy further down the depth chart, if a target comes to your way, you have to, you have to capitalize on that. Otherwise, they're not going to come your way and you probably won't be active. Okay. So we're running out of time. We're going to give you a couple of things if you could touch on these points. One, I watched the all 22 Caleb looked a lot better than I think he's getting credit for. Yeah, he missed some stuff, but he was under duress when he was clean. He was really good. Give me a quick thought on Caleb Rochon Johnson. Give me a quick thought there and then Montes sweat while he hasn't put up numbers. He's occupying a lot of guys Caleb from a clean pocket, very efficient, but he's a check down came right now, which is okay because you expect him to be when the past protection looks as it does right now. Rochon Johnson, who I didn't get her straight answer out of Shane Waldron on that yesterday when I asked, he's still apparently was in a ramp up period, but he was able to play 15 snaps on special teams, but none on offense. Okay. That doesn't make sense. And then Montes sweat is getting chipped and doubled and he expects that. And I do think the month as sweat breakout game will happen soon, but that's what happens when you have one elite defense event on one side and teams are going to put more attention over there to try to stop him from getting into your backfield. As always, we're preaching time, Courtney. Thank you very much. Thanks guys. Take care. Have a great day. Great trip. Courtney Cronin is with us. And the car started on a hotline rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom. It is. Don't worry. Call the car. What's he doing here? Hello. On checking in. Ricky. Ron. Hmm. I think I heard from him about 24 hours ago. They said he wasn't available for comments. I thought I was reading the athletic. I don't know. It's pretty interesting. We will get into that with Jesse Rogers, the piece in the athletic.com regarding the Chicago White Sox. Did you read it? Did you see it? See and hear about that column? We'll get to Jesse Rogers at 915 on that. Also the Cubs. Big bold statement from Craig Council. Shot across the bow at Jen Carter, Tom. Oh God. Take that. And the Bears. The Bears will win against the Colts if film the blank for us on the cap and jighood morning
