(upbeat music) - Good morning, Chicago, and welcome in to the Captain Jake Good morning show. Our DSP and 1000 and streaming on the SP in Chicago app. We're David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. We've got Jay, we've got Jay Moore, and we got you here on this Tuesday morning. Still to come, we'll hear from Tom Waddle, usually a Waddle Wednesday, but we'll be with us for a special appearance, coming up in our next segment here on Captain Jake Hood. - Love talking to Tom Waddle. It's one of the highlights of our week. We got Waddle Wednesday, again, it's special this week 'cause he's got to do Tuesday. There are Thursdays, I mean, Albert Breer, Courtney. We line up the football brainiacs for our guests, or for our listeners. - Also, you can watch our show on YouTube and all the shows here at the HBS Chicago on YouTube. YouTube.com, look for ESP in Chicago, as well as on Twitch, twitch.tv/ESP in 1000 Chicago. Well, Cap, we've talked about how everyone, not only locally but nationally, are talking about the Chicago Bears, and again, a one-in-one football team has a big spotlight on it for a number of reasons, because of Caleb Williams, because of the offensive line. - And 'cause there's expectation, which I don't think there was expectation, if you're really around us with yourself to last three years, they're just war. And so then Matt Negi gets fired and comes Ebert Flus and Paul's pace gets fired. No expectation in year one. No real, maybe a little bit last year, but after game one when the Packers trucked us, everyone, yeah, not yet. But this year, you added a lot of toys around that quarterback. - Just don't know if you can protect him. - You know, in sports conversation, many people, Cap, do not want to just come to a consensus. There was a time in this country where we could be able to come to consensus. We might disagree on issues, we can lay out, this is the problem, this is the problem, this is the problem. But ultimately, we would have a common goal, and that is for whatever the issue is, politically, socially, sports, music, whatever the conversation is, we come to a consensus that something's gotta get better, something's gotta get right. - That's correct. - So the same thing with sports. If I make the statement, which I have, but I'll just use this as an example, and say, "Cap, you know what I want? "I want for the offense and the offensive line "to do right by Caleb Williams. "I want him to have every opportunity to flourish "in this offense, meaning that the coaching staff "and the players around him have to elevate this rookie "so that way the Bears are a better football team." That's a bottom line statement. That's not how we do it here in America. How we do it, Cap, is, well, the offense isn't good enough, and here's why. It's because Shane Waldron isn't good enough or is failing already through two games as an offensive coordinator, failing. The offensive line, five blocks of silly putty, are not making sure that Caleb Williams is protected. Caleb Williams doesn't get the ball out quick enough on a regular basis, and the one he's in trouble. You know, he had seven sacks, and he threw the football away twice for interceptions. Medibra Flus, and on, and Ryan Polls, and on, and on, and on. We have this big pie, and we get all these slices of blame for the pie. But ultimately, you know what the pie tells me? That the whole operation has to get better offensively. If the Bears want to reach your goal of 11 wins for the Bears, my goal of nine wins for the Bears, but our goal for the Bears would be in the playoffs. But everyone's got their slice of the pie, but ultimately it's about how the offense can get better. That should be the bottom line of all of it. But we got to blame somebody. - Yeah, you're everybody. - You're exactly, there always has to be a scapegoat. Ah, that coach sucks. Oh, actually he may not. Oh, but he went to another place, and he won, why didn't he do that here? Well, maybe you didn't put him in the best possible position. Everybody's so quick that, and they never want to blame the players. Oh my God, especially fans, can't blame the players. Those are my favorite players. You're supposed to blame them? - Yes. - But that can be true, can be on the players. It can be their fault. They can have a bad night. That does not absolve the offensive coordinator from the play calling, or the way he wants his offense blocked, or the O-line coach, if he's not doing his, all those things can be true. But there's enough talent on this football team that it should look better than it did on Sunday. - All those things that, all those slices of pie that we just cut up together, all these things are factors. But the common bond, the common goal is that Caleb Williams and the offense has to be better in order for the Bears to win. If the defense is solidified, and we believe that at the end of the day, it'll give you a top five defense, then you can't fall short offensively. You can't, 'cause you're not gonna win that way. - Correct. - If you don't even do the nuts and bolts of just running the football well. - What's the number cap? When is the number for the 24 carries and 48 yards for DeAndre Swift? If you can't run play action passes off of run fakes when the run game is working, how can you do a run play action passes if you can't run the football? - Correct. (laughing) - That is exactly correct. You know, we had a caller early there, and I was tired of fighting with him. - Yes. - He didn't run any RPOs. - That's not what Caleb Williams runs. - Well, I'll text him, he's like, can we please have an intelligent conversation? He's not an RPO quarterback. That's not Caleb's strength. He could throw on the move. He could throw from the pocket. He's a fairly mobile guy. He's not an RPO guy. That's not what he was brought here to run. - Correct. Just keep in mind the Titans and the Texans pose different challenges for Waldron. Tennessee and Houston, they're in the top five in the league and yards allowed. Give me a 413 and 508, respectively. I mean, again, Shane Waldron and the offense and everything else has to be able to work better. It's just one loss, yes. You just don't want it to be a trend. We talked about a big opinion about the offensive line. How about Jeff Saturday? Former Indianapolis Colts coach was on the get up talking about. - What was Colts coach at? Well, he was. - Yeah, that was a joke. I mean, that was her saying, "Yeah, why do you want to come coach the team?" That was ridiculous. Who was the head coach? Frank Reich, when he fired him in season. But Jeff Saturday is one of the most accomplished centers to play the sport and understands offensive line play. - So, our former Colts head coach, Jeff Saturday, I'll get up. - Yeah, I call him Colts Center. - Yes. Talked about the offensive line for the Bears, just atrocious. - At atrocious. - And the tackles aren't playing much better, but the ends, when people blitz him, it's done. Like you have no shot. People are getting rolled up. When I tell you rolled up, meaning getting run over in the interior portion of the line, you can't just turn and open a gate to the inside portion of your quarterback. I don't care what quarterback you are. You want to make Tom Brady and Meer mortal, or Peyton Manor, rush him up the middle. And that's what's happening. Nine sacks on 25 drawbacks. We are in significant trouble and Belichick is completely right. At some point, you got to block from the inside out, build a team from the inside out. They need some help internally. - He's a correct. I was too bad I'm not in New York because if I was in the hallway and say, "Hey coach, you got a minute?" Then I asked him about the offensive line. Coach, let me ask you quick. I would just talk to him in the commissary. - Correct. - Just call him coach. - Correct. - He would be completely thrown off by that. - Yeah, it was funny. I was in Bristol when we were owned by Disney. I was in Bristol and I went to the calf, they call it, the cafe to get coffee and whatever. And I'm standing at a line in there. I'm like, "Oh, that's Jay Billis." Oh, that's Mark Tashira. Oh, whoever that I think was, Rex Ryan. I'm like, "My God, I can just stand here in the lunch room and get all my questions answered in every sport." - Yes, exactly right. Just a lot of experts all in the same spot. All friends. - Yeah, all friends. - Just hanging out. So we're talking to you about the Bears three, one, two, three, three, two, three, seven, seven, six is our telephone number. Let's go to the phone lines and talk to you. We say a lot to Clearwater Florida, listening on the ESPN Chicago app. Here's John on cap and Jhood. Hey, John, good morning. - Hey, how's it going guys? You know, I was thinking I could beat into the offensive line, but everyone else has already gotten up with that. I wanted to talk about the upcoming schedule. I know you guys kind of touched on the next two matches we got, but you really looked the next 10 weeks, we don't run into a game record on a defensive line. And so 80 punches sitting 30 feet. And that's huge. I mean, I'm not saying they're weak defensive lines, but if you want to look at a bright side going forward, we just face maybe the hardest team on our schedule possibly. And maybe the best defensive line we're going to face for the next 10 weeks. If anything else, we got Ryan Bates getting healthier. Oh my gosh, he didn't ramped up. He could step in. Maybe I don't, we don't know what's going on with that, but we can get some chemistry rolling, get these guys confident back. And I don't know, I think I'm looking at the brighter side of things instead of bashing on this old line and how it looked the first two weeks. I've got a lot of things in mind. - I understand, John, but you had to talk about what the story is. It's not that we're making the story. We're watching the game just like you are. And the offensive lines got to get better for the quarterback that everyone's got to be on the same page. I mean, it's not bashing. It's just talking about what we're seeing on our TV. It's just-- - Right, I mean, it's fair if you're not-- - Right. - Yeah, they haven't protected well at all. I'm not defending that. I'm just saying we have brighter days looking ahead with the schedule. And at first, I thought maybe it was a bad idea that we have a crappy end of the season schedule with all the vision gains left. But looking at it now, I'm kind of glad that we have weaker teams going forward that we can build upon and get better as the season goes along. - John, we appreciate the telephone call. You could say that. You could say they're weaker. What are the bears going to do about it? - You could say that. - Correct. What if you go in heaven forbid and you lose to Indy and you come home and you lose to the Rams? I can't live in that world of panic. Like, I can only play the game that's on the schedule coming up next. I can't go, oh God, if we lose this game, we're going to come home and play the Rams and they're getting healthier. And oh my God, what if we lose that? We're one and four. Oh my God. No. - No. - Just get ready for the Colts. And let's do the best possible job we can to get out of Indianapolis with a win. And all of a sudden you're like, wow, two and one. Here we go. Now you come home and you get the Rams who are banged up. But let's just take it one play at a time. - Honestly, God, Cap, out of all the sports, this is the sport where you really have to be able to take perspective of one game at a time. You only get 18 of these. - You can run out of the baseball. - You get 17 games to prove yourself. That's it. You get 17 and hopefully a playoff berth. - Maybe. - Maybe. - But I'm talking regular season. - Oh yeah, yeah. - And you cannot go, oh God, we've got to play who? The Chiefs? - Oh, Patrick Holmes is hurt. He's out. You don't know who you're going to get week to week in the National Football League. - That's why they build those big buildings in Vegas 'cause you just never know. - Correct. - Or in Sacramento, like we see these ace fans are going by, look Cap, look there. - Oh God, sad ace man. - Wow. - Sad. - Oh God. - Let's go to a real baseball stand. - The Sacramento ace fan. - This is their last year in Oakland. They're done next week. - There's Sacramento ace fans walking by. - Sad. Shay, you didn't see it from our ego. Just their heads are down, walking the streets of Chicago. - Hey, just think about how passionate our fan base is and they call in and we've got all these callers on hold that want to talk about our bears and our cubs and our socks and our bulls and our black ox and Northwestern and Illinois and whatever else. - Yeah. - They're passionate. We could say, well, what a stupid call that was or what a brilliant call it. How about if you're an Oakland A fan? - It's just a sad ace. - Hey, hon, can we book some tickets to Sacramento for what? Our team's moving there. - What? - No shot. - They're moving to Sacramento? - Yeah, just for three years till they build a stadium then we're going to Vegas. Like a horrible existence. Stadium's a dump in Oakland. - Still better than the White Sox. - What's better than the White Sox? - The team? - No, I'd rather be a White Sox fan. There's at least passion. Look at the blogs and he's a die heart. He'll tell you there's section 108 or there's this one or the White Sox talk thing. Whatever there's passion, there's anger, they're pissed. Oakland, there's no one there and it's apathetic and they don't even have a home. - Yeah. - It's way better to be a White Sox fan. - I would agree with that. - This can get fixed. - Carrying matters. - This is like the White Sox is like you were in a bad wreck and you broke your pelvis and your leg and an elbow and you're all banged up, but it'll heal. You can, it can be fixed. - I think being an Oakland A fan, it's being in hospice. - You're being a little rude. They are actively boycotting their team because their owner is a POS who is trying to steal it from them. They are passionate. - Actually, nobody goes and it's not this year. - They're not going on purpose because the team's being scoped back and look at their attendance for a decade. Nobody goes, they couldn't do the radio in the main booth because there was rodents in the roof of the stadium. - That part is true, but go look at White Sox attendance. Are we saying that white Sox fans are so passionate? Nobody's going to those games either. I think you're being very mean days fans. That's all I'm saying. - No. - These wonderful people walked by our studio, decked out Naze Gear, the fact that they flew in to go to the games, two series played in Chicago tells you all you need to know about the fans. - They wanted to see Wrigley and they saw Chicago and they, it's way easier to be a White Sox fan than an A's fan. - I think you're being very rude. - I'm not, and I'm not taking a shot at the passion of any fan in Chicago. I just think you're being very rude to A's fans like those people who walked by that are very passionate about their baseball team. That's being stolen from them. - Tommy, are we being rude to A's fans? - I don't think directly, no. - We're just telling the truth. It's horrible existence to be an A's fan. - Well, I mean, look, have some compassion, Kat. Like, I blame a lot of that stuff on ownership. Like, do you, how do you feel about me as a Red's fan? Like, Cincinnati's a baseball town, but the owner of my favorite baseball team has ruined it for me by some of his comments and actions. So, you know. - Correct, but you have a good stadium, you have a loyal fan base, that can get fixed, sell the team, it can get fixed. That Oakland thing, that's just, that's like having stage four cancer. - Yeah, but what's the reason? It's ownership, ownership has stolen any reason for passion from the fans. You can't blame the fans for the owner being horrible. - But you could sell the A's to a guy who keeps them in Oakland, and they're still not gonna win. - It's a nice diversion, guys, from having to dissect Bear's offense. So, I appreciate this conversation. - That's a little bit, that's what we're here for. - This is a pleasant change, to be honest. - And how about this, Tommy? How about this for a pleasant change? - If you put it in front of Chris Maddog Russo, the name of Jackson Smith and Jigba. - Oh, no, don't do that. - You would wonder how he would pronounce it because it could be very, very dangerous. Now, before I hit play, Jackson Smith and Jigba, if you're a producer, you're concerned. And Maddog said, let me have the board, Jay Moore, about Jackson Smith and Jigba. - Oh, God. - You're gonna have to play it on your end, it's not working. - Or maybe it just won't play because it's a ton of appropriate. - Oh, it's the one, I'll get your head out of the gutter. - All right, can you play it on your end, Jay Moore? - Yeah, the Maddog Russo, Jackson Smith and Jigba. This thing here, I don't know, it's like the old TV in the back of the day cap, you just hit it on the side, maybe it would work. Like the old TV? - Yeah. - Yeah. - And the picture would snap back in. - Yeah. All right, coming up, we'll hear from Tommy. It's a special Tommy Tuesday on Cap and Jhood. When I get back here, the wheels better be spinning, all right? - On Cam and Jhood and ESPN Chicago. - Tom Waddle is with us here, a special Tuesday appearance, and Tommy is on the hotline. - That'd be the correct, either. - No, it'll hop. - Rattle, rattle, thunder, clatter, boom, boom, boom. - Ah! ♪ Don't worry about the correct swing ♪ - Morning, Tommy, how are you? That was a big play in this game. Smith played well, and as receivers, Metcalf Court 10, Jackson Smith and Gujuba. - Jackson Smith and Gujuba, the kid from Ohio State. He caught 12 more. - Thank God. Thank God it was that. Thank God, that's good enough. - Oh man. - Holy smokes. - Don't take another crack at it, dog. - Don't do it. - Oh good. - We'll call him JSN from now, okay? - I mean, and by the way, can I just tell you how vintage that radio is? Tommy, the vintage radio that Chris Russo gives you on SiriusXM got the old fashioned music in the background, and he just read the box scores. That's what he's doing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Jackson Smith and Gujuba, he's unbelievable. I mean, he's doing that. It's just the old school reading the box score game after game. Ah, that's good stuff. - Oh, I just think a pulled a gut muscle there. Laughing. Oh, it was good. Those are good, hardy laugh for a Tuesday morning. - I thought you should have every day. Every day you should laugh. You should cry. You should be moved to emotion. - That's exactly what Jimmy Valbano said, correct? And his famous speech. - That is correct. - Oh, man. You guys had some really good conversations today, too. It's like, you know, we, I think we're all prone to emotion on a Monday morning, especially after a Sunday night game. So then you kind of, you exercise your feelings, but then you kind of, and like in Jonathan Hood fashion, I got like four pages on my notebooks written out about a number of different things. And, you know, it is really interesting from how the team's been constructed, 'cause I know you were talking about the Bill Belichick stuff. And that's a really interesting conversation because, you know, and I just did this exercise. You talk about the offensive line. Do you realize inside our own division? This is how the Vikings, the Packers, and the Lions have gone about putting together their teams. - Fine. - Okay. Vikings have two second round picks, two first round picks, and a sixth round pick. All, that's their starting five. The Packers have two second rounders, one third rounder, a fourth rounder, and a seventh rounder. And they develop their players, regardless of position, as well as anyone in the National Football League on offense. The Lions have three first rounders, another first rounder from the Bengals that they signed as a free agent and one third rounder. Now, you know, as you guys talk about team construction, like, and we had this conversation yesterday as well about the Saints. What are the Saints doing well? You know, Cooby X is now the OC. And they've had a masterful first two games. The Saints have three first round picks on their own line, a second round pick, and Lucas Patrick. But anyway, you have four guys that were drafted in the top, like 35 or 40. It's, if you look at the situation, it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that they're struggling a bit upfront because other teams in their division and around the league that are having success have put more assets into building their offensive line. You know what I'm saying? - Yes. - Like last night, I was telling this to the guys here. I'm watching, I follow a guy named Brandon Thorne, NFL. He's an offensive line guru. And he had a breakdown. I was watching the game, I'm like, wow, this kid in the middle of the Falcon, offensive line. - Really good. - Yeah, it's a busy kid. - Yeah. - By the way. It was a good winstram. And to watch this tape breakdown, I showed it to Hoodie, of him against Jalen Carter. I mean, it was just a work of art. - Do you know where Chris Lindstrom was picked? - Yeah. - 14th in the first round. - Right. - And the guy starting in Tampa right now, who's a starter, who was picked this year, 26th in the first round. - Right, so like as our good friend Olin has told us all in the past, you get what you pay for. So it doesn't mean you still can't find success. But when you look across the offensive line and you feel yourself frustrated for obvious reason, you have to acknowledge Braxton Jones is a fifth round pick. You know, Kevin Jenkins was a fairly high pick, but he's not playing well. Your center was a one year, $3 million edition. - Who the Rams kicked out? - Exactly, Nate Davis has not worked. And you know, Darnell Wright is a second year player and a lot of people have told me everyone loves him. I think he's a fantastic player. You learn more about a player like that near two than you do year one. And you're not gonna come to any conclusions after two games. But like teams are going to adjust to what you do, know how are you going to adjust to that. So look it, again, it doesn't mean that you can't succeed. But if you look at the makeup of your team, and now, I'm not suggesting you guys are saying this, but people are like, "Well, now we gotta ground it and pound it." Oh really? What you traded a fourth round pick for Keenan Allen, you signed a pass catching tight end in Gerald Everett. You signed a dual threat running back in DeAndre Swift. You drafted your quarterback first overall, and then you drafted Roman Dunes at eight. Your offensive line has a fifth round guy, and you traded a fifth rounder for Bates, who's a perennial, you know, fill-in guy. And you signed, as we said, Coleman Shelton for three million. And you want to ground and pound? Like you have built this team, or you've gone about it in a non-ground and pound way. Now, it doesn't mean you can't run the football, and it's up to this OC to find a way to get more out of the running game. But for everyone now, not saying you guys, but for people now, let's just run the Packers offense. - The Packers offensive line is late years better than that. - And what did they do in the first round this year? - Added an offensive lineman. - Yeah, so, I mean, like, again. And then I just go, "Look, I mean, I can paint you a pretty, "I can paint you a positive picture. "There's a lot new here, guys. "You got a new quarterback. "You've got new players in your huddle. "You've got a new offensive coordinator. "You have faced two of the most challenging fronts "in football in your first two weeks. "You gotta let it breathe a little bit. "You're gonna get the cold to rank 31st in defense this week. "You're gonna get the Rams who ranked 32nd in defense "next week after that." - Then Carolina. - Yeah, you get a couple of weeks of solid play. You build some momentum, and then we'll look at it. Again, that's the rosy side of it. The hard reality is life in the NFL is really difficult. It's not good enough for your receivers not to win their battles. They gotta catch the ball in the end zone. Your quarterback's gotta be more accurate. He's gotta make these throws. And the offensive line's gotta block someone. And the coordinator has to find a way to run the football and get his quarterback more comfortable. So, you know, there's a lot there in two weeks, but I think at the end of the day where I find myself, look, as bad as it's been offensively, you get a really good chance to be five in four in one in the first five weeks of the season. So, here's hoping that they find some common ground inside that locker room, and the offense starts to jot a little bit. But, you know, it's... A lot of emotion attached to this team in the first couple of games. - Tommy, what was your favorite offensive play from the Bears on Sunday night? - My favorite offensive play. - Hori Taylor. - Nah, they're like... - Stop it. - Stop it with a punter. - We're just trying to get a clean cut here, Tommy. So, go right ahead. Good in, Q, and good out. - Uh, I would say the fairly deep out that he threw the Caleb through on time to DeAndre Carter in the first drive. - Yeah, again, an unlikely suspect that it was, that was not an arbingo card. - Yeah, but, like, that's the part of being an NFL player. Like, DeAndre Carter has answered the bell through two weeks in the return game, and then when Keenan Allen can't go, guess what? You gotta step in, and this is your opportunity to kind of, you know, earn more playing time here. And I think he's done really well. He ran a nice sail route to start the second half, the first drive of the second half, and Caleb overthrewing. - Yep. - So... - That's the second time in two weeks, he's missed him. - Yeah. - Yes. - Like, so, like, I heard you guys earlier. There's enough blame to go around, but I think that we, for some reason in this town, we're afraid to blame highly paid players for not doing their jobs well. The first thing we do is we look for a boogie man, and that boogie man is often the offensive coordinator, who may have their faults. - Who may have their faults. - Or the pitching coach, yeah. - Who may have their faults, but for me, I don't know how you guys feel, it always starts with player performance. Like, I heard the Tevin Jenkins thing. Like, I agree with you guys 100%. It really, that's your response. How about blocking the guy in front of you? I don't care what the assignment is. You may disagree. - Get to your job. - Do your job first, and... But that sounds like a frustrated young man who knows he's in a contract here and hasn't played well in two weeks, so... - To my knowledge, I don't know. I mean, we get the call. We hear a call at the front, and we execute to where we get coach to do. I mean, a lot of things happen, but like pressures and stuff, so we don't control so much. - Yeah, and I played the role of Tevin with hoodie, and I just said, look, we've gotta be better. We've gotta keep our quarterback clean, and we'll get back to work all of us tomorrow. - Amen. - Could you give a text to Collinsworth, please, and let him know that Tommy, it wasn't about here in Allen, that'd be on the field. - Oh, you're right. - Could you just tell him, like, maybe offensive line, and maybe just the timing with the quarterback and all the whole system, everything else, as much as I would've liked here in Allen on the field, that's not what was missing on Sunday. It would've been nice, but for Chris to say that, you know, they're really missing him on third down, Mike. He's like, no, yeah, yeah. - No, you're right, Jonathan, but there was, and I felt the same way. There were a couple moments there where I thought Collinsworth was spot on, we talked about back shoulder throws, and that they're there, and that Caleb's gotta make those throws the one to DJ, and then ultimately, Rome runs the wrong route, as he-- That's the other thing, guys, like, I love the fact that these two rookies come out and say, it's on me, I'm accountable, which is great, but I wanna get to sooner rather than later than not having to be accountable for their mistakes, and just to see them play better, right? So you don't have to be accountable. I love it. No, you compare it to what Kevin Jenkins is saying, and the quarterback's showing 10 times more maturity, but at the end of the day, this is all about performance, and it's just on that side of the ball from top to bottom, hasn't been good enough. - We have more for you. No, we're done with Tommy. Oh, we're done with you, Tom. - All right, that's okay. All right, I appreciate you rearranging your schedule to have me today. - Anything to have, Tom Wattle, if Tommy Tuesday or a Wattle Wednesday, we're all richer for being around you. Jackson Smith and Jigba. - See, see how good that was? Nice and clean. - Smooth. - It's smooth. (laughs) I mean, think about it, Tommy. Here's Shayne ora. - All right, we'll start. - What a disappointment after such a great intro. Oh, there's Shayne. Ah, we'll start with 12. Utah, no movement. Very exciting game this weekend against Oklahoma State, number 12 versus number 14. - Yes. - The winner of that game will be in the top 12 next week. If it's Utah, they might move up a little bit. Oklahoma State was impressive over the weekend. I'm very excited to watch that game, but no movement Utah sits right at 12. - Utah at 12, all right. What's next, number 11? - 11 Penn State, also no movement off a bi-week. They're gonna bomb Kent State on Saturday. We will learn if they're still gonna be victimized by big game James Franklin in October when the schedule toughens up, but their schedule's pretty easy the rest of the way still. - The answer to that question is yes, they will be victimized by James Franklin, because after all, it's at James Franklin coach team at Penn State. - And I just love, and he sucks. - Any time you say the name James Franklin, this literal reaction in your face is hilarious. - He's just horrible in the big spot. - He's terrible. - He's not just in the big spot. I'm a good coach, terrible in the big spot. And this is a coming from a man who's lost a lot of money at the Penn State. - It's gonna be great when they make the play off this year hoodie and get nuked in the opening game. - Never prepared for the big moment. - What if he won the National Championship and all of a sudden, you two guys have to go. - No shot. - Oh, God. - You know what? If James Franklin wins the national title, I'll tip my hat. - Oh, would he be funnier? Kerry, wait, what's his name? Kirby, smart, takes an NFL job. - You know what, I wanna conquer the NFL. - Oh my God. University of Georgia, no, she's a pirate team, right now. - Oh my God. - That's the key. One of the best moments of the year. - I would burn my Georgia hat. And that's not hyperbole. I'd burn it. That guy, big spot. No shot. - You'll imagine that. James Franklin. - That would be incredible. - Cheese. - And by the way, if Kirby, smart, did take an NFL job, half his roster would have driving violations and probably in jail. - Here is Shane Norling. Shane. - But he wins. - But he wins. - Another player with a reckless driving charge for Georgia last week. - But you know what? Unlike James Franklin, and a big spot, my coach wins. - Go now. - Even by the skin of his teeth sometimes. - Yup, sick 'em. - Number 10, USC. Again, no movement. - Six and a half point favorites on the road in the big house this weekend. - Very exciting. Fight on. Go beat Michigan. I'm considering going to that game. I will be in Michigan for a wedding this weekend. I may just don a USC jersey, honor Chris Black, and go watch the Wolverines get smoked. - Captain's talking about it for many years, like meaningful games in the non-conference, meaningful games in September. Man, because of this whole realignment, you're getting good quality programs. - So Brett and I, he calls me yesterday. That's my son. He said, yeah, I got a plan for us for Saturday night. Okay, what do we got? He said, we're gonna cook burgers on the grill. I wanna make the burgers. He wants to form the patties to hold them. And he said, Tennessee and Oklahoma. - We gotta be locked in for that one. - Yeah. - Like, what are you? My son turned into Shay Norley? - Tennessee, Oklahoma is that is must-see television. Rocky Top and Boomer Sooner, out of Norman, Oklahoma. - Let's go, Tennessee. My guy, my friend Anthony goes there. Let's go, Tennessee. But he's got orange flowers, by the way. How about that? Right here on his cut saw. Love it. - Here's Shay Norley. - At nine Miami, the only ACC team to crack my top 12. They murdered Ball State over the weekend. Their schedule is ridiculously easy. We really won't learn much about Miami until they play the ACC title game, which they will. They're number nine. - Next. - Missouri down one spot from seven last week. They should have beaten the brakes off of Boston College. But how about these self-inflicted wounds, hoodie? A second down in 59 after 49 yards of penalties on two plays. A coverage bust on a fumbled snap by BC that became a touchdown. They fall a spot. Self-inflicted wounds caused them not winning that game by a big number. - A friend of yours told you last Friday that that game's gonna be close in the expert's think. I try to tell you, like I like on the surface, Missouri and Drinkwits and Bowling Green. - Closer, Bowling Green, they're scrappy. Are they not? Scrappy? Shay? - The Falcons are scrappy. - Scrappy? - Yeah. - Okay, Shay. - Brown and orange and the Falcons. - Box score though, hoodie miss who dominated the game. - No, instead. - Bc, cup mistakes, BC ends up covering a number. - Yeah, that's all I needed. - It's a very frustrating watch. - Number seven, Oregon. Up one spot, they finally looked the part, destroyed Oregon State in the Civil War. But like another team, another team in the Big Ten, the only other Big Ten team left on the list, we really won't have answers until October on who this team really is. - Okay, Oregon, yeah. - Yeah, but are you done? - Yeah, I mean, he laid it out. Like Oregon looked apart last week, that's correct. - We got two ranked teams in state. - No love at all, like others receiving votes, and I use ranked and Illinois's ranked. - You're better than that. - No, they are not close to the top 12. - I hope the align, I stomp Nebraska and you have to genuflect in front of Brett Bilema. - Oh, me too, maybe four and all. - Me too, I'd love for Illinois to get that done. - Illinois can write their story and work their way into the top 12, which today, they're not. I don't think that's an insult. - This season's make or break for Bilema, quite frankly, 'cause you had one year does good, next year not so good. This has got to be the year, they get into a decent bowl game. To save his job. - Agree, quite frankly. - Yeah, I don't-- - I missed out on him so much money, he's a good dude, and it's a hard job, I get all of that. Man, I don't think he's in danger. But, man, if Ben and I, you could get Notre Dame on the schedule five, six more time, they'd have a chance of getting into the playoff. - I would agree with you that the fighting of Bevins got the job done against Oregon State. That's what we've been waiting for all season. Let's see if they can continue that momentum. All right, what's next, Shay? - Tennessee at six, up a spot. I actually wanted to raise them further. They body slammed NC State in a semi road game a couple weeks ago, then they put up, wait for it, 71-nothing at kneeland against an FPS opponent in Kent State. Hypelasm cooking, Oklahoma this weekend, they win that one, they're gonna be top two for me. - I mean, you're going to Norman and you beat the Oklahoma Sooners. Why do you think of the Sooners this year? There might be a little bit down, but the point is though, we're talking about on the road, big spot, if Tennessee can go into Oklahoma and win and I can't stand them, I understand that they deserve that acclaim. - What is that, Lloyd Noble Stadium or is that the basketball stadium? What's the name of the stadium there? - Kneelen Stadium. - No, it's in Tennessee. - No, it's Oklahoma. - Gomer Stadium? I don't know what it is. - Memorial Stadium. - Memorial Stadium. - No, like naming rights or anything. - Is that basketball like Lloyd Noble Arena or something? - Yeah. - Okay. - I don't know if he also donated for the football. - Let's go, it's gonna be a fun night. - See if the fighting Jim Rossos can do something about it to get Tennessee, ha ha, then from there. All right, next. - Number five Alabama, no change, but there is a change in how I view them. Kneelen DeBore has earned my respect. They hit Wisconsin with a bus on Saturday. - Yeah, it was 42 to 10. - Something like that, 42-17 maybe. - 42-10, 42-10, their final quarterback Tyler Van Dyke goes out like in the first couple of plays in the game. And Alabama rolled as if Wisconsin wasn't out there. Why are the teams in the south playing in the north? Because we can beat your ass anywhere. That's why. - Milro looked like a Heisman player, man. - Yeah, take that. - They pounded. - Next. - Four Ole Miss, also no change. Covered a big number on the road against Wake Forest. - Keep the lane train rolling. - Next. - Ohio State, no change. Three off a bye week. I still have questions at quarterback and offensive line. They'll play Oregon in a few weeks. I can't wait to watch it. October 12th, we'll find out about both teams. - Next. - Georgia, down one spot to number two. 13-12 at Kentucky is just not good enough. - They did not play well. - They've used their mulligan. That can't happen again, hoodie. Your team cannot do that again. - You should always use your mulligan. Ha ha ha. - And that leaves the number one team in America. Texas Longhorns. I agree with the AP voters for the first time since 2008, Texas is back. - Number one in the country. - Sark has got 'em rolling, baby. - Quinn Ears is a good player. - If we would have stomped Kentucky, we would have solidified our number one spot. But because Texas beat Texas San Antonio, the roadrunners, 56-7, Texas gets the top spot. And it's fine. - I don't think it was 'cause Texas won't. It's 'cause you guys didn't look very good in a win, albeit at-- - That's fair. - I guess Kentucky, that's fair. - That was that Kentucky. - Yeah. - Yeah. - That's fair. - Stupes can coach, man. I mean, I didn't know it would be that close though. - But as Kirby smarts it after the game, it's a win. We gotta double you. We'll go back to work, clean up a lot of stuff that needs to get fixed. We'll see you at the end of the year. - Alabama's next in a week. Oh God. - Oh wow, you're scheduled a lot different this year. Where's Morehead State and all these other ones? - You play Tennessee Tech. - Maryland Eastern Shore. - They took care of Tennessee Tech. - Same for-- - Their weight rooms fine now. - Colorado School of Mines didn't cut the schedule this year. - We beat Tennessee Tech. We took care of their weight room for the year. All right, coming up. - Nice weight room, why are you holding on to the wall? They paid for it. - Nice plaque right there. Thank you for the million dollars for the weight room on a 48 to three win. All right, coming up, we will give you, shout out, give you the cap and jhood cut of the day.
