Mike Moore media. It's 11 o'clock Wednesday must be time for Rocco live. Yep, it is. Hi, I'm Mike Moore. Welcome to our weekly county wide conversation. I'll be taking your phone calls during this hour. Every Wednesday 11 to 12 3 3 6 9 3 2 1 8 8 1. Our usual number. Our program is sponsored by Sandy Cross General Merchant Ice in Readsville. I'll be talking to Amy Tilly about halfway into the program. Also, I'll be talking with Christie Starnes, Executive Director of Genesis Ministries. They have that annual fundraiser coming up next weekend. But this weekend, Friday and Saturday, we're counting down hours now away from Riverfest in Eden and Cindy Adams, who puts it all together for us to enjoy is on the line. Hey, Cindy. Hello, how are you, Mike? Oh, I'm doing great. And I tell you the rain has come and gone. I've just asked people to give me rainfall totals across the county. They're just rolling in lots of rain, but it's it's moving out and sunshine is moving in. It is we got our streets washed naturally. That's that's exactly right. Yeah, that's good. Yeah, but we're so excited. All of us to be a part of Riverfest and everyone that comes every year. But you were saying it last night's Eden City Council meeting, you're looking for record crowds this time around. We are. You know, the weather number one is a perfect festival weekend. Number two, we have so many fantastic vendors and features and our music as always is top notch. You know, we have a lot of people coming just for the music and the food. And then on top of all that, you've got Tabitha Brown. You've got chef Carlos coming just goes on and on. So it's kind of like one of those perfect storms of goodness. And so I think we're going to have a lot of fun. Oh, yeah, a lot of fun too. A perfect storm of goodness. I like that. That's nice. Oh, wow. And just so much hard work to make this happen. So I want to say right up front, thank you, Cindy, for for putting it together for us. I mean, this is something that when you finish on this weekend, you'll start for next year. I know how that how that works. We'll already be listening to bands and booking bands and features. You have to in order to get the good stuff. Sure. Yeah. Let's talk about the good stuff with the bands. Give us that line up. Well, we have got, let me get to that myself. We've got the U-turn band that's going to be kicking us off. And then we have Carolina cool that day. We have a 90s country band head south coming about the M10 singleton. And then the evenings. Friday night, we've got 80s nation. And let me correct myself. It's Tim Hare, Tim singleton is is with 80s nation. But we've got them from seven to 10. And then on Saturday night, the triads favorite trial by fire will be playing from seven to 10 as well. And then right next door is the Eden rotary beer garden right there. And so lots of great music. But also during the day at 230, we will be presenting something very special to tap out the brown and let her have a few words to all her fans. And then at three, we will have a cooking demonstration at the stage from Chef Carlos Brown. During the day, he will be there all day, both days in the park. But Jean Harrington Park, there is the corner of Washington Henry, who's going to do something real special at 330. Oh my goodness. Wow. Something special, 230 special, three o'clock special, kind of teasing is with that. So that is on the Nestle Purina stage. Yes, that is correct. And we thank them for that. Sure. Okay. I know you went over the sponsors last night and you may do that again if you like, but they're all listed there on the banner and the flyers and all of that. But great sponsors to make this happen too, aren't there? Yeah, they are just everybody has been so generous. I think our festival is respected and we hope to deliver what we say. And but this community comes together for this and we have some new ones come on this year in a big way. And I will read them if you don't mind. Please. Our two presenting sponsors are Nestle Purina and Dyer's Plummy. And then we have the City of Eden, we have the Eden marketing special events, we have home trust bank, UNC health, Rockingham, the Leopold Municipal Service District, Gilband, Piedmont Surfaces of the Triad, Enbridge, Eden Chamber of Commerce, MVP Southgate, Fair Funeral Home, tire max, Mike Moore Media, Destination Magazine, Duke Energy and Tri-City Automotive. It is a very impressive group. Yes, it really is. So thank you sponsors. And and all of our vendors who are coming from far away places and some closer. But where's the furthest away Cindy? Who do you have? Um, probably Vermont, Vermont. Wow. Our maple syrup folks are coming. And then we have but from all over. Really, all over the state of North Carolina, far in North Carolina, we have some folks coming from Asheville. We have some folks coming from down on the coast, Bamford, Pleasant Garden, Greensboro, Winston, you name it. And so our hotels are going to be doing very well this weekend. And then people are coming from far and wide to see, we have people coming from as far away as Pennsylvania, from Atlanta, and all over. One lady, very sweet her and her daughter are coming. They're planning the weekend. They've had special shirts made and said they've waited seven years for this moment. Oh, wow. They're making a big week. And they said they're going to do everything tab. And so it'll be a lot of fun. Yeah. Oh, that's great. Yep. Good to have Tabitha Brown hometown gal back in town for that. Oh, that's great. And she's going to be involved in a number of special events during Riverfest too. Okay. She is at 12 noon. She is going to be with Parker Ellis and Dyer's plumbing in seeing the duck drop. And I will mention if you don't have your duck tickets now, I have them here then get them at Dyer's, you can get them at the Chamber of Commerce. But there's lots of great prizes to be had with this. It's good to keep. And then she's going to be on stage at 230. Then she's going to do a meet and greet. Good afternoon. And then she's going to do a meeting with the press and then she wants to shop and she wants to meet the vendors and meet the people and just enjoy the festival. So she's just so cool. And she's so positive and her energy is just going to flow out into this festival. We can't wait. Oh, yeah, exactly right about that. Sure. Okay. So one of our special guests at Riverfest this year. And this is the 21st year. Is that right? Am I counting correctly? It is time flies when you have them fun. 21 years for the award winning and it is award winning. It is. We were named best festival one year. Our marketing pieces one were best in the state. And so we work hard. My whole team worked hard. And I mentioned life like last night, Deanna Hunt, who's our city clerk, but she is a brilliant graphic artist. And I dare say that the package that she created for this year, Riverfest, would have cost upwards of 10 to $15,000 from a professional marketing firm. And we had it done right here in hell. Yeah. Yeah. So thank you, Deanna. Okay. Well, yeah, it takes a team to put all this together. And I know you also mentioned last night and you and I'll be talking on stage a couple of times on Saturday at least. You mentioned a couple of key city departments too. Yeah, these guys work so hard for us all year long, not just in our event, but just keeping this city going and moving and prepared and all those things. But particularly at Riverfest, my team with the public works department, with streets with sanitation, and then the facilities and grounds, parks and rec. You know, we have to, when you're talking 30,000 people, that's a lot of trash. And a lot of things and we keep it moving. And one of our big goals is to have a clean festival, safe festival. And so then you throw in the police and then you throw in the fire department and all that. And you know, all those things happen behind the scenes. A lot of things happen weeks before the festival. But really, when you talk execution day on tomorrow and Friday morning, these guys step up. They've mode, they've trend, they hook up water, they hook up electricity, Carl Booth is our official electrician. Can you imagine hooking up over 165 vendors, food vendors, all a stage, all that goes into that and electrifies that festival is pretty incredible. We have put in over 12 electrical units down there, we have our own water set up. And so it isn't undertaking to do something just big. And it just takes an army. And at the next City Council meeting, I hope to have a very comprehensive list of people who have helped because every single person is important. You know, tank overby with with parks and rec heads up the trash part of that and sanitation is there with a truck on site to get it away and all that. And so it's a big deal. It's a lot of work. And so I appreciate every single one of them that that help. And you know, Travis Hutchins always say his name, but he kind of heads up back for me and make sure we have people there when and where we need them. And he is just incredible. Okay, thank you everyone. All right. Now before we finish up, tell us about shuttles. That makes it really easy to get to the festival. It does. You know, when you're talking 30,000 people again, that's a lot of cars, a lot of vehicles. We just can't seem to park those in the uptown Eden area very well. We can't. We kind of take over all of downtown. Yeah, but there will be if you absolutely have to drive in, there are some municipal lots available on Harris Street, off of Bridge Street, there'll be five street parking to a point. And then we ask and I'll have signs made if you do five street parking, please don't block anybody's driveway. They need to go and come all day as well. But the shuttles, they're clean, they're nice, they're air conditioned. A safe hands transportation does those for us. We have two running on Friday. We have three running on Saturday. You're not going to have to wait long. But they're free. It drops you off right at the entrance of the festival there at the bottom of Bridge Street. It'll take you right back to the parking lot. The two parking lots we use are the top of tractor supply and the bottom of Kingsway plot and they'll be plenty of signage there. And you'll know exactly where to wait. And so use it and make it easy for yourself. Yeah. And you said free for that and free admission to Riverfest too, as always. That's right. And also, we are providing a lot for handicap parking this year. If you come off of Jay Street onto Patrick Street, there's a lot there. And again, they'll be handicap parking size. And they can come right down Patrick Street and enter the festival there. So we're making it easy for those folks as well. Oh, it's great. Okay. Cindy, thanks for the update. A little preview there getting ready for Riverfest. Friday, five to 10 Saturday, 10 to 10 in uptown Eden. Are we excited? And I'll see you there. Okay, looking forward to it. We are to you. Thanks, Cindy. All right. Cindy Adams with the City of Eden marketing special events, you can go to explore Eden in sea on Facebook and on the website. And you'll get the scheduled the schedules of all the activities and find out everything you need to know about Riverfest. Okay, hope you can be a part of that with us. All right, so another special guest will be getting the latest from Genesis Ministries in just a couple of minutes. But first, let me get to our music spotlight for today's Rocco live. Danny Davis died earlier this week over the weekend, actually, then a car wreck injuries from a car wreck in Snead, Alabama, not too far from his hometown. He was 63. Danny Davis led the Warrior River Boys since 1984. They crisscrossed the USA all over the United States touring for many, many years. Well, that's a long time right there. Danny has been there with the band since 1984. So we're sorry that we've lost him. But we do have some wonderful music left behind from the Warrior River Boys. And I've got a lot of music already downloaded and ready to play in between our guests and talking about our sponsor, Sandy Cross General merchandise and reads. Well, let's slip in one of these songs right now before I talk to Christy Starnes with Genesis Ministries. [Music] Today's the day I get my gold watch and chain. Today's the day I get my gold watch and chain. [Music] In our music spotlight today on Rocco Live we're featuring Danny Davis and the Warrior River Boys. And some more music for them coming up in a moment. Right now on our line is Kristi Starnes, Executive Director of Genesis Ministries here in Rockingham County. Hey Kristi, how are you? Hey Mike, I'm fabulous. Thank you for having me today. Oh, fabulous is fabulous. Okay, that's great. Well, we wanted to talk a little bit about Genesis Ministries. So let's do that first and then we want to find out a little bit more about your fall celebration coming up next week. So for those that don't know, they've heard the name Genesis Ministries. What are you all about? What do you do? Yeah, thank you. So Genesis Ministries is a 12-month discipleship program for individuals that we help people live a life free from addiction. So they're individuals that struggle with addiction. Okay. And our program is out like I said 12 months. Yep. And you've been doing this for a pretty good while. Yeah, we started in 2015. We took our first set of students in 2017 and we currently have had over 40 graduates. And we've had over 55 children return back to the family unit, the home with their field mother. Mm-hmm, that's great. Lots of success stories there for sure, aren't there? It is a lot of success stories. Yeah, okay. Your annual fall celebration coming up on the 28th, tell us about that and can we still get tickets? Yes, so a registration is still open. It is free. It is our 8th annual fall celebration. And what happens is we open the doors at five o'clock. We're having a silent auction and we have a lot of wonderful things for auction and the event begins at six. We have graduates that are going to share their testimony. We have graduates that we're going to see graduate at this night and we're going to hear from some of the family members as well. And so we're super, super excited about the fall celebration. The ridge is catering and to come out and enjoy some great food fellowship and a nice silent auction. Okay, so all of this is on the 28th and where will this be? It is that awesome back to charts, which is 326 stadium drive and the doors open again at five and the event starts at six. Okay, now this is a free event as you said. Can people, how do we get tickets admission and what's a cut off for that and everything involved? Yeah, great question. So you can go to our website to register so that genesisministriespink.org. Or if you don't if you're not tech savvy, you can always call the office. Melissa would be happy to help you. The number is three, three, six, three, four, four, two, five, two, five. Just let us know your name and how many you plan to bring. And the cut off is next Thursday. So that would be the 26th. Okay, I'm making notes of this here. Okay, very good. All right, anything else that we need to mention while we have a little bit of time here? Yeah, so we are open in a men's division. So we could use all the support possible for that as well. And we'll update everybody on that at the fall celebration. We are in the midst of renovation right now and we're hoping to watch the men's division the very first of next year. Oh, wow. That's exciting exciting to see that component, isn't it? Yes, it's very exciting. We've been long awaiting for property and we're grateful to have that in renovating currently. And we're looking forward to what the ward wants to do with men in the key area as well. Yeah, okay. All right, thank you for the good news, the good stories, the good work you're doing at Genesis Ministries. Anything else before we finish up? No, just a reminder, our website, GenesisMinistries.org, and our phone number is 336-344-2525. Thank you so much for your time, Mike. Thank you too for your good work and everybody involved there. And we'll talk again soon. Thank you, Christy. Sounds wonderful. Thank you very much. Christy Starnes is Executive Director of Genesis Ministries. Good work they're doing with addiction recovery and putting those families back together. Again, the number is 336-344-2525. If you'd like to get involved, you can help them in some way. Lots of ways to do that. GenesisMinistries, Inc.org, GenesisMinistries, Inc.org. Okay, well, we're talking with Cindy a little bit ago about Riverfest. We do have some other special events coming up in the area. I'd like to mention some of those, but if you'd like to be on our program, we've got a little bit of time. We've got a little bit of time right now for you to call in 336-932-1881, 932-1881, to get on Rocco Live. And I do want to mention another couple of events here. The Down East Boys will be in concert at Grace Fellowship Church, South Park Drive Readsville. This Sunday at 6, the General at Mission $15. Oh, before we get to that, things a little bit out of order here. The 60th Annual Fall Market for the Readsville Federated Woman's Club is coming up at Zion Baptist Church, Piedmont Street Readsville, that is Friday, 10 to 5, Saturday, 9 to 4, 60th Annual Fall Market. Good work there through the years with the Readsville Federated Woman's Club. All right, another song right now. Then I'm going to be talking to Amy Tilly at Sandy Cross General Merchandise shortly. In our music spotlight today, I'm featuring the Warrior River Boys, and here's another song right now. ♪ It was only through a fallen binary ♪ ♪ that I heard a cry I ever shall remember ♪ ♪ The fire sent and cast its burning embers ♪ ♪ on another faded city of Ireland ♪ ♪ Fire, fire, I heard the cry from every breeze that passes by ♪ ♪ All the world was one sad cry of pity ♪ ♪ Strong men in anguish pray ♪ ♪ Calling loud to heaven for aid ♪ ♪ While the fire in ruins was laid ♪ ♪ As we grab all the beautiful city ♪ ♪ I met an awful struggle of commotion ♪ ♪ when blew a gale from the ocean ♪ ♪ Ray firemen struggle with devotion ♪ ♪ but their efforts all proved in vain ♪ ♪ Fire, fire, I heard the cry from every breeze that passes by ♪ ♪ All the world was one sad cry of pity ♪ ♪ Strong men in anguish pray ♪ ♪ Calling loud to heaven for aid ♪ ♪ While the fire in ruins was laid ♪ ♪ In purple to all the beautiful city ♪ As promised, Amy Tilly at Sandy Cross General Merchandise on Boyd Road in Readswell, Boyd Road, Irving Farm Road, right there, easy to find. I'm doing wonderful. I hope you are. Yes, all is good here. A lot of people know about your store there. It's been around for a pretty good while. How many years now? 36 years. 36 years. Yeah, 36 years ago the store was built by Philip Carter and the family still owns the building, but we're running the business now. And it's the gathering place for our community and for everybody coming to the center of the county. That's exactly right. Yeah, it's kind of a neighborhood place for sure. And when Annette and I were there recently, the neighbors were coming and going all day long. But a lot of people maybe have never been there. So we want to give them some reasons to come to Sandy Cross General Merchandise. So what's going on, say this week, upcoming things, Amy? Well, as always, we've got the Pure Gas, which is supplied by the Sparks Family Oil Company, which is local. And Pure Brand is a really good grade, one of the best, for gas. And we've got all for a diesel, on-road diesel, non-ethanol, regular '93 non-ethanol, which you don't eat often. And it's the cheapest price in Rockingham County for the Pure Brand on '93 non-ethanol. And then we've got kerosene for home heating. So that is a big draw to people. We've got people bringing boats and all kinds of four wheelers and all kinds of things to get that non-ethanol gas. And of course, all the weed eaters and lawnmowers that people are using this time of year. But we have a lot. That's a big draw is our gas from Pure. So we're getting fresh sourdough bread, and we are getting a lot of freeze-dried candy, including freeze-dried candy corn, which sold out last week. And pumpkins, more skittles, taffy, eminemes, and marshmallows. So we're going to have a ton of that coming in today. We got new crocheted items. We got hats and scarves, headbands, some crocheted hair bows, and some crocheted turkeys that you can use either as placemats, or to put in something to stand up in the centerpiece that are super cute. And we've got Nancy's fudge restocked yesterday, including yogurt cranberries, two new snacks, the s'more snack mix, which is really good. The party snack mix and rice crispy toast that are dipped in Nancy's chocolate. And they are simply wonderful. And simply s'mis has come and brought all of her new Halloween and fall hair bows and fall and Halloween placemats. And they are absolutely beautiful. If you haven't looked at what she makes, it is amazing what she makes with the sewing machine. We've still got a few left, but she's bringing a few more. We've got firewood ready for all your gatherings this fall when you're doing a little bonfire. And elderberry was just restocked. I'm going to play another song here by the Warrior River Boys. We lost Danny Davis, the leader of that band just a few days ago. So we're kind of featuring him today on our program. And then some people, a lot of people actually have been posting their rainfall totals across the county. We had some rain coming down yesterday and I'm going to be taking a look at those kind of scrolling through those Facebook posts and we'll get to that a little bit too and maybe an update on some other things, weather related here in the county. [Music] On the Lost and Cry of the Wibber Wheel, I had an old one I liked down. The eyes fell with the windy chill and the hopes of several where I will. [Music] I had to see that sun go down and to see the mountains above the hills. That's when I hear the love of the sound of the Lost and Cry of the Wibber Wheel. [Music] And now I dream that Lost and Cry of the Wibber Wheel. The sound is out just how for you. When I dream I hear the sound of the Lost and Cry of the Wibber Wheel. [Music] We'll get some more music in just a little bit before we finish with the Warrior River Boys. Danny Davis been leading at band since 1984, sorry to note his passing just a few days ago from a car wreck. Well I mentioned River Fest a little bit ago and some other events coming up. Let me mention a few more we have, let's see here, Fall Festival, downtown Stonewall, Saturday, September 28, that's 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We have Fall Festival in downtown Madison, Saturday, October 19, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. And then we have what the Hey Festival in May at Ann and that is October 1st through 31st. That's sponsored by the Downtown May at Ann Merchants Association. I don't have the complete informational app. You can go to their Facebook page and get all the information there for all of those. Now I want to give you kind of a weather update because we had all of that rain. And I asked someone had posted earlier this morning about how much rainfall they had. So I put on our Facebook page a little over an hour ago. List the post your rainfall amounts you've had, where you live in the county and that kind of thing. So it looks like we're quickly here up to 26 posts. So let me just to kind of scroll down with you and we'll look at where some of these rainfall totals are around the county. Let's see one and a half inches last couple of days and reads will five inches of rain and reads fill rain gauge overflowing. Let's see, my gauge holds seven inches, I emptied Tuesday night, three inches this morning, total of 10 inches of rain in May at Ann. Yesterday, four inches Madison made in. Let's see here. Someone here says nine inches and my house in Madison, I'd say five to six inches Monday evening. Rain gauge filled up overflows and not exactly sure. 6.6 inches, two day total University of States went worth. Spray in Eden, three inches, four inches Eden over five inches here across the line in Stokes County. The gauge ran over Madison near a long bridge, two miles from the river, Pine Hall bridge boat ramp. Wow, look at somebody has posted, I'm getting pictures here now. Look at that boat ramp at Pine Hall, three and a half inches price road in Eden. 7.5 inches, highway 704 East of Madison. 6 inches in Summerfield, 8.5 inches May at Ann, including six inches from 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, 2.23 Rockingham County near the Virginia line. 704 East of Madison over five and a half inches, rain gauge overflowed. Same thing in Stonewall, five inches plus there. Yeah, a lot of rain came down. Thank you, everyone, for sharing those rain totals where you are. I did talk to Rodney Cates, Director of Rockingham County Emergency Services right before I started our ROCOLI program. And he's putting together information there about two water rescues last night. One in the Oregon Hill area, one Wuff Island road. One older woman, a 13 year old daughter, car swept away from rising waters in a creek. They were in a wooded area there for at least an hour. So Rodney's working on that and I will put all of that information together when I talk to him. We're to talk again about one o'clock, so I should have that posted by 130, 145 or so just to kind of give you an idea of the rainfall and those water rescues and what was involved in that. You know, they say every time you have the rain, you know, turn around, don't drown, but some people haven't gotten that message yet, unfortunately, but everyone's okay from the water rescues. I'm happy to report on that. Okay, one more song, well, we've got a couple more songs, but here's one right now that I wanted to include on our broadcast today. Let me find it here. I've got to find it among all of our files here. Oh, here we go. Okay, this is another song from the Warrior River Boys. Well, I was only next in a boomer shack, just a little shiny by the railroad track. The harm and other drivers was my lullaby, and a veteran was allowed me how to cry. I got to pretend blues. Laudy, laudy, laudy, I got to bend a bottom of a ramble inch. When the vessel blows, I got to go. Oh, Lord, 'cause I'm never gonna lose a red train blue. Well, my daddy was a farmer and my momma dear. She was the only daughter of an engineer. Sweetie loved her backman and it ain't no joke. It's a shame the way she keeps a good man, bro. I got to red train blues. Laudy, laudy, laudy, I got to bend a bottom of a ramble inch. When the vessel blows, I got to go. Oh, Lord, 'cause I'm never gonna lose a red train blue. Well, I guess I'm old enough to stop a running round. I've tried a hundred times to stop a turtle down. Every time that I find a place to hold a stick, a red train will slow them on my way. I got to red train blues. Laudy, laudy, laudy, I got to bend a bottom of a ramble inch. When the vessel blows, I got to go. Oh, Lord, 'cause I'm never gonna lose a red train blue. Oh, yes, the old freight train blues. I think I had those one time. If you missed our podcast this morning, it's up now. You may want to check it out.
