Listen your way to riches. [MUSIC PLAYING] Ever wish your money could talk? Like give you actual financial advice. Right. Not just that you're broke by, but real. Right. Are you doing? Exactly. That's kind of the fun premise behind this book, Golden Eggs. Golden Eggs, OK. By IFD Olivera Jr. OK. It's a really creative approach to thinking about personal finance. So this talking money thing, that's got to be interesting. It's surprisingly effective. Because, I mean, who hasn't thought, man, I wonder what my bank account would say. Oh, for sure. If only it could have a say in those late night online shopping screen. Exactly. And this book, it's not your typical, you know, dry, boring finance lecture. OK, good. It's a story about a guy, Sergio. He's good at his job, but financial whiz, not so much. Relatable. Already. I'm feeling it. Right. So Sergio's money actually becomes his financial mentor. Hold on. His money is giving him advice, like literally. Yeah, well, capital is what it's called. And it guides him for a whole week. OK, this is getting good. It's these wild conversations. Sergio, he's forced to confront all those bad money habits, the things he doesn't even realize he's doing. OK, so we're talking straight up conversations with his money, like dollar bills, whispering, stock tips. It's a fictional narrative, but it works. It makes these financial concepts relatable, you know? It's like your eavesdropping on this strange, but insightful conversation. I can already imagine myself arguing with my bank account. No way. Got to get that limited edition coffee mug before it's gone. Laughs. Yeah, I can see it. But that's the thing. The book, it tackles this whole irresponsible spender versus investor thing. And with the talking money, it's hard to ignore. That irresponsible spender, that's me. Living for the weekend impulse buys. Oh, and those books I haven't touched. Guilty. A lot of us have been there. Oh, totally. And that's what's so great about Sergio. He's not some made up character with fake problems. He's relatable. Everyday struggles, dismissing money, thinking it's just for, you know, spend on what makes you happy. Money can't buy happiness, and they're said that. Exactly. OK, but I'm guessing capital, the money, has a different take on that. So what's the alternative then? Remember that golden goose, Fable? Don't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. Right. OK, yeah, I see where you're going with this. It's a class. It's about thinking long term, right? Not just grabbing everything all at once. Exactly. Capital, the money, uses that analogy, the irresponsible spender. They're focused on those golden eggs. Consuming, consuming, not thinking of the bigger picture. They have thought about what happens when there are no more eggs. Exactly. They're missing the long term health of their finances. I bet it's hard to hear that though, even when it makes sense. Yeah. Can you imagine Sergio's like-- Oh, yeah. But money can't buy happiness. Yeah. You know, all the classics. Oh, absolutely. It's the root of all evil, that kind of thing. He throws all those right back at capital. And what does capital say? It's really interesting how he reframes those. Do you mean an example? Well, like, the happiness one. OK. Capital's not saying money's going to make you happy. Like, you get rich, and then boom, happiness. Yeah. But he says financial security. OK. That helps with well-being. Sure. It takes away stress. Yeah. Opens up opportunities to actually enjoy things. Right. Yeah, because when I'm stressed about money, it's hard to be happy about anything. Exactly. It's not even about buying stuff. It's like that feeling. Here's that baseline feeling. Right. Just security. And with money being evil. OK. Yeah, what about that one? Capital says it's just a tool. OK. Like a hammer. OK. You can build a house, or you can, you know, hit someone with it. Right. Use it for good or evil. It's on us. It's better choices. Exactly. Taking responsibility. OK, I like that. So we talked about an intelligent investor earlier. Right. What does that actually mean in this book? So for capital, it's someone who sees beyond just the numbers. OK. It's about how do your financial decisions-- Yeah. --line up with your values. Oh, interesting. Your goals. Your purpose. Not just getting rich. Right. But like, actually, how does it-- It's a part of your whole life. Yeah. Yeah, I like that. It all works together. Not just a separate thing. Exactly. So this is more than just like invest in this, or budget better. Right. It's bigger. It's a mindset. Mindset, yeah. And that's where the gratitude comes in. Yeah, which is interesting, right? Gratitude and money. Explain that. Because you think it's just about numbers. Yeah, like how much you have, how much you make. The capital says, be grateful for what you already have. Oh, OK. Instead of always focusing on what you don't have. I see, I see. Because that shifts you. Yeah. From scarcity. I don't have enough to abundance. I'm grateful for what I have. Exactly. OK, I like that. And from that abundance, you can grow. So it changes your whole outlook. It does. Do you have a favorite example from the book? Where Sergio actually-- Yeah, puts this into practice. Applies it. Yeah. There's his part. Sergio is complaining he can't afford a fancy vacation. Right. The cap was like, hold on. Hold on. What about enjoying nature? Which is free. Free. Yeah. Exactly. Brings joy. But it shows you you already have things. There's abundance already there. You just have to see it. Right. And that goes back to seeing the riches. Exactly. It's not always about material wealth. Yeah. And actually, capital even tells Sergio to try selling things. Selling. Wait, why? Because when you've sold something. OK. You understand its value differently. Oh, interesting. You've been on both sides buying and selling. So you're not just like, oh, this thing is $10. Right. You've thought about what it takes to get to that price. The work that goes into it, the decision making. And then when you go to buy something else. You think twice. Exactly. Because you've been on that other side. It's a whole shift. So it's not-- Absolutely. He pushes him to think big picture, you know? Like, what kind of life are you trying to build here? What's actually important? I like it. So it's about using money to support those goals and values. Not just chasing wealth for no reason. Exactly. And that connects to another big idea from the book. Creating a comfortable environment for your money. A comfortable environment for money. I never thought about it like that. What does that even look like? It's more than just having a big bank account. It's about having a good relationship with your money, where you're not stressed about it all the time. OK, so it's about finding that balance. Yeah. Being responsible, but not letting money run your life. Exactly. Capital tells Sergio to think of money as a partner. Not a master. Not something that controls you. Right. He even says to ditch financial independence and use financial affluence instead. I think we talked about that a bit before. What's the difference again? Why affluence? Because independence makes it seem like you're separate from money. Affluence means you're part of something bigger. It's about abundance. Oh, I see. It's like you're welcoming prosperity and not trying to trap it. Yeah, exactly. And that actually reflects Sergio's whole journey. How so? And remember at the beginning how Sergio is totally skeptical of capital. Yeah, he's not trying to hear advice from his talking money. Right. But as Sergio starts trying these things, gratitude conscious spending, thinking of money as a partner, something changes. His finances get better. They do. Yeah. But also his whole outlook on life. He transforms. He becomes that intelligent investor we were talking about. OK, exactly. Making choices that actually mean something to him. And here's the best part. Sergio doesn't keep it to himself. He starts teaching these ideas to everyone. No way. He goes from clueless to financial guru. That's amazing. It really shows how powerful these ideas are, even though they seem simple. And it's all wrapped up in a story. Exactly. Mix it fun. Mix you think. So for our listeners who are thinking, OK, cool story, but my money is not talking to me, what's one thing they can take away from this? Start listening. Even if your money isn't talking, your spending habits are sending messages. Pay attention to them. Look at where your money is going. And ask yourself, is this what I really value? Exactly. It's about taking control of your own financial story. Becoming the author of your own financial journey. It makes you wonder, what would your money say to you if it could talk? That's something to think about. This has been a really interesting deep dive. I'm ready to have a little chat with my bank account. Maybe over coffee. That's something to ponder, isn't it? And until next time, keep those financial conversations going. And remember, it's not just about the money. It's about the life you build with it.
