The sports world was stunned Friday morning when it was confirmed that Columbus Blue Jackets star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, a former Reading Royals player and hockey coach, were killed in an accident in their home state of New Jersey.

JP and Kelly react to the tragic news.

[Music] Good afternoon everyone and welcome to today's edition of PHLI Fire's podcast. Of course I know Bill or Charlie today, my job was tough as it is and after today's news it got even tough for of course if you guys aren't familiar. I go by the name of JP Zapata join with the lovely Kelly Hinkle on a day that is truly tough not only for flyers fans, for hockey fans in general, for sports fans in general and we're just going to dive into today. Today's gonna be an interesting show. We're obviously going to discuss the news that was today but we're also going to try our best because look what on news like today, we definitely have to show our respect because it's the right thing to do but we all feel it. Kelly and I, we have heavy hearts today, you know Johnny and Matt are part of this flyers family, this Philadelphia family and so we also understand that people have heavy hearts as well and we want to try to do our best to bring people's hearts up and crack a smile or two because after today's news, we definitely could try our best to have a little bit of a smile but let's get into the news first and then we'll obviously all react here today. If you have been living under a rock today, this last last night around 8 30 p.m. John, Johnny Goudreau and Matt Goudreau were riding their bikes in Olds, Mint Township, New Jersey when they were struck by an SUV. The driver of the SUV appeared to be intoxicated and was trying to pass cars before two cars before hitting the brothers on road road 551. The driver right now is being charged with two counts of death by auto as of right now. This investigation is still under is still going on. They are still doing their due diligence over there. The worst part about it though. The brothers were gearing up for their sister's wedding which was scheduled for today. The Columbus Blue Jackets did put out a statement that we will get to give you to you guys here. The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by the unimaginable tragedy. Johnny was not only a great hockey player but more significantly a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. We sent our heartfelt sympathies to the two wife Meredith, his children, Noah and Johnny, his parents, their family and friends and the sudden loss of Johnny and Matthew. Johnny played the game with great joy which was felt by everyone that saw him on the ice. He brought a genuine love for hockey. With him everywhere he played from Boston College to the Calgary Flames team USA to the Blue Jackets. He thrilled fans in a way only Johnny hockey could. The impact he had on our organization and our sport was profound but pales in comparison to the incredible impression he made on everyone he knew. Johnny braced our community when he arrived two years ago and Columbus welcomed him with open arms. We will miss him terribly and do everything that we can to support his family and each other through the strategy. At this time we asked for prayers for the Goudreau family and their privacy to be respected as they grieve. Johnny was born on August 13, 1993. He was 31 years old. He was born in Salem County, New Jersey and he grew up in Carney's point, New Jersey. He did attend Gloucester Catholic High School but graduated from Dubuque, Dubuque, sorry if I'm mispronouncing that. A high school in Iowa. He played three years at Boston College where he had a decorated college and career where he met Kevin Hayes which we'll get to in a little bit as well. He was the 2012 national champion on that Boston College team. He was the fourth round pick in the 2011 NHL draft by those Calgary Flames where he spent nine seasons there before signing a deal with Columbus in 2022 in hopes to move closer to home in South Jersey, the Philadelphia area. Johnny played 743 NHL games. He scored 243 goals and had 743 points. Matt Goudreau, which we cannot forget as well, although he did not have as decorated of his career, it's important to remember him as well. He did play at Boston College. He last played in 2022 for the warchester railers in the ECHL. He was 29 years old now. We're going to open this up for everyone for both Kelly and I and for everyone in the comments sections to voice their opinions, voice their thoughts, voice their feelings because I think after a tragedy like this, I think it's very important to do that. So we will open this up for everyone. Kelly, take it away. I'm sure you feel the same way I do right now. Yeah, this is a it's a tough one. I feel like every detail that's come out about this tragedy has made it more tragic than the last thing that I heard my stomach has hurt all day. The fact that he was with his brother, the two of them together before their sister's wedding, Johnny just had a child very recently. The fact that the person doing this was not only driving like an asshole or a jerk, but also intoxicated, which is inexcusable, of course. Everything about it is just horrible. I mean, even if this story weren't about a famous person that we all knew about, it would be tragic. Every single detail about it is just absolutely tragic. And I do kind of hope that it's a lesson. You know, oftentimes it takes someone visible being affected by something like this in order for people to finally take a step back and reevaluate the way that they live their lives. And I hope that maybe people will think a little bit harder when they're driving. It's very easy to autopilot when you're driving and not really think about what's going on around you. And I hope that people will just kind of take a second to think like, you know, oh, this person's going slow. I can be a little bit late. Like I don't have to speed. I don't have to try to whip around people. I don't have to be aggressive. I don't have to turn on red. Like I don't have to do any of those things. I can just chill a little bit and maybe think about what's going on around me. And you know, we just lost somebody in Philadelphia to a horrible bike accident with someone driving like a lunatic on a city street. It happens all the time. And I do hope that the visibility of this horrible accident will make people think a little bit more about the way that they live their everyday lives because we could all stand to because I don't know if it's if it was COVID or whatever, but I have noticed even driving in a car that people lately drive in a very irresponsible, insane way like, yes, yes, or it can be terrifying the way that other people are driving. And I really do hope that this being so visible and being so prominent and all of us knowing who this person was makes people reevaluate just the way that they they do the things that they do every day because we do I think have a tendency not to think about what we're doing. And I if nothing else, I hope that maybe that will happen. It's it's absolutely saying like and I see the same things too. And I don't know what it is like the selfish nature that we have on these roads where we feel like we're entitled, we own the road. I don't I fully don't get it. Like, and obviously, like, you know, I've seen something minuscule is like, you know, some J.O. is, you know, in short traffic, wants to get home. So he's riding in the emergency lane and and, you know, he's just trying to cut everyone off. But then, like, in this matter, like, what was the reason? Like, I get it like, you know, I've driven in that area and an old men township. Like, it's it's obviously single lanes. It's it's it's world. It's really rural area. And so, you know, slow driver, this dude decided like, I need to get home. Obviously, he was intoxicated. And that's the other big piece about this as well. But like, guys, we are all sharing this road and it goes back to like the whole communal thing that I always talk about. Like, guys, we're all in this together. Like, I know, like, there's such division right now. But like, guys, like, we are all in the same boat. We're all trying to survive. We're all trying to live, we're all trying to feed our families, you know, we're all trying to be happy. And so like, you know, just remembering that I'm not the only one out here, you know, I'm not the only one in on this road. I'm not the only one in this society, in this community. I think it's extremely important. And it goes towards everything, especially in this matter. But yeah, guys, like, listen, I don't know how many more stories of this that we have to talk about, Kelly? Like, if you had one drink, just one, dude, the Uber ride is way cheaper than having to go through a trial, or even worse. I wonder what I really hope this guy who committed this crime here feels worse than we do right now. He's got to live with this for the rest of his life. Exactly, exactly, Kelly. So like, a quick second to just think about the situation, ordering that Uber or that lift, it goes a long way, guys. Like, I can't, I can't stress enough. I constantly hear these stories of drunk driving and people losing their lives and like, you know, in high school, we used to make those jokes when they would have those meetings with us. But that was so important. And we still didn't learn from that. And I still see people to this day after having like six or 10 drinks, they're still getting behind the wheel. And it's absolutely wild to me. I don't know if this is the story that helps. But please, guys, if you've, if you had a drink, please, please, please, please, please, take that Uber. It's not worth it. It's just not. No, it's, it's really not. And this is the, it sucks a lot. I mean, I'm kind of glad Bill isn't here today because I knew, I know Bill knew his family. And I'm sure this is very hard for him. So I'm kind of glad he doesn't have to talk about it. But yeah, it's just, it's real rough sucks. It truly does. I mean, you know, I was, my wife, I come home from, from the Gargano show, my, and I'm telling my wife, I'm like, babe, like, I'm not right that that it's like, you know, in pro sports, there's only been two other deaths where I felt like this. It was the Kobe death, and it was the Jose Fernandez death, where I just feel like a pit in my stomach. And obviously, like, I, like, I didn't know Johnny, like I just knew him because, you know, the fliers connections, and he was really fun to watch on the ice. But like, you look at it in a deeper scale, like, Kelly, I just got married. And I couldn't even imagine if my wife's brother died or if my brother died on the week of my wedding, I wouldn't even have the wedding, like, to be honest, no, I would be so distraught. Yeah. And so like, we don't know any of these athletes, like, we, we see them on television, we watch them in games, we see them in interviews, we don't really know them. But there was always so many stories about Johnny Goudreau, that like, it's very clear he was a nice guy, like a genuinely good person. If you're on Twitter, there's a guy J at J Fresh Hockey, asked people to share stories about Goudreau and his brother, Johnny and his brother, if, if they had any. And some of them are just, like, so sweet and so funny. And like, honestly, I do feel like that's one of the best things you can do in situations like this is try to remember good things about the people. There were just, like, funny stories about like, and I had never seen this one. Like, apparently Johnny Goudreau ate so much Nutella one time, he had to go to the hospital, like, like a, like a four year old, like he was an adult man. And he ate so much Nutella he had to go to the hospital. Like, he just seemed like a sweet guy. And he was always involved in hockey in South Jersey, in the Philadelphia area. His family was always involved in hockey in the area. So it's, it's hard not to, to feel like a, like a palpable loss. Like, yeah, a good, I mean, like, you don't want to see this happen to anybody. But it really, it really sucks when it's just somebody who seemed so good and nice and genuine. And they're just like gone immediately. Yeah, you know, every time I saw like a video, Johnny, like, he had this smile, like, it could brighten up a whole room, you know, really kind eyes. Yes. Yeah, like, you could, like, you would love him if he was your son, you know, like, he had that, he had that, like, soothing soul type of feel to him. And obviously, yeah, like, you know, the whole South Jersey thing. And obviously, you know, I, like myself and Bill, like, we grew up in South Jersey and like, you know, you know, maybe like in the nineties, two houses, we didn't have a lot of South Jersey hockey stars, we're starting to get some more. But Johnny was kind of the face of that for all of us South Jersey hockey heads, you know, it was, it was one of us in there. And like, it's one thing, you know, being a Philadelphia kid. But like, this kid grew up down the street from a lot of us, like, especially Bill and I. And so I know you mentioned Bill was close with that family. So being able to see a South Jersey kid being one of the best in the NHL was so dope to see. And obviously, like, you know, you think about two years ago, during that free agency period, we all, we all wanted Johnny hockey here. And we all, you know, that love that Johnny had for Philadelphia. Like, it didn't matter where he was playing. It could have be, it could have been Columbus. It could have been Calgary. We still are rooting so heavy for him. You know, I saw the clip where I think it was during the Super Bowl year for the Eagles. He walks in the saddle dome and he had the the Carson once jersey and he's just like, he really wanted to flash that off because he was such a proud Philadelphia. And so that, you know, it's, it's such a beautiful human being that we just truly lost here today. Yeah, there's just not, there's not a lot to say, really, not a lot to say, but I know it's not ideal for a podcast. Listen, so we're all feeling it. We're all feeling it, but at least we do have some good comments here h h h h with the best one here, Kelly. Please tell the loved ones closest to you that you love them embrace them and cherish the moments you have with them. And so well said, H.C. Absolutely well said there. Yeah, that's one thing that everybody should do is you should always try to live every single day. Like it could be the last one. Don't say anything for grandiquel. Don't say anything for granted. Never. Not with yourself or with the people that you care about. I agree. I agree. Let me see what else we got here. Put South Jersey on the map and represented the area so well. Ludge has gone too soon. Absolutely. Yeah. And you know what? It's crazy. Like, I wasn't obviously I wasn't there for Kelly Lindbergh back in the day. I did watch all those YouTube clips that like the ABC news covering the story. And I saw like the people hanging out in front of the the hospital, hoping to hear good news with Kelly Lindbergh's accident. And it felt I feel like I feel like flyers fans had the same thing here today. Like it felt like today, Johnny was actually a member of the Philadelphia Flyers. Like the way we were all, you know, just engulfed in that's in the situation. And so we definitely, even though he wasn't a flyer, he was a flyer, James. That's for sure. And we definitely lost one here today. Yeah, hockey is such a niche thing that I feel like everyone in it is a little bit connected. And when you have somebody from so close to Philadelphia, it's not a big, it's not a big huge group of people. Like this isn't the Eagles, you know what I mean? Like this is a, not a lot of people can play hockey because it's so expensive. Not a lot of people play hockey because it's just not as popular as the other sports. And so the people that are involved in that community, it's a very small, tight knit community. And so I do feel like, you know, this is a rough time for hockey people in the Philadelphia area, because chances are a lot of them at least peripherally knew this family based on how prominent they were in the hockey world. So anyone that was affected, I really hope you're doing okay. Yeah, same, same. And please, you can always reach out to us, guys. We are here for you. This is a family. Tony C, this is absolutely heartbreaking. You're right. H. Thank you for the what's up, man. We appreciate it. K Red checking in. I appreciate you. K Red. Nabelle is sending love from Vancouver to all his friends in the Philadelphia area. We really appreciate that. Thank you for checking us out all the way over in Vancouver. We really do appreciate that. K Dub, thank you so much, man. We listen, we're all feeling that Lyndon. Yup. RIP. And yeah, let's not forget Matt as well. Johnny and Matt, it's heartbreaking. Absolutely sad. Gabe, but yup. Rest in peace, Johnny hockey. Oh, man. I really hope Kevin Hayes is taking care of himself. Yeah, I'm glad he has a wife, because like, I really worry about that guy. We saw what happened to him on the ice when his brother died. I think there was a lot of a lot of people didn't give him enough grace as far as like why his game suffered after his brother died. And he in a matter of like three years now was lost his brother and his best friend. And that's just like almost too much, I think, for one person to bear. So I really do hope that he's got people around him who can hold him up during this time, because like he also seemed like a good dude, like a goofy nice guy. Yeah, I really hope that he has friends reached out to him because I would be a mess right now. If my best friend and my brother died within the year span there, I would be an absolute mess as well. I don't know that I could continue in any kind of functional way, honestly. Yeah, I truly feel for it. Yeah, Kevin Hayes and his family, they're all feeling it as well. Yep. You're thank you so much, man. We appreciate it. Alex, appreciate that, man. Eric Smith, can anyone name a better hockey player to come out of New Jersey than Johnny? I certainly can't. Yeah, I mean, I was just I can't even think of another one right now. It's hard to think about Johnny. Yeah, Johnny, listen, and the thing is that Johnny understood that and he carried that torch for South Jersey. And so we really appreciated him representing well for us, man. It's so, so, so rough. Okay, right. We really appreciate that, man. Yeah, we got each other. And that's a thing. Again, we're a community here. Everyone's feelings, whether you're a flyers fan, jacked fan, flames fan. Oh, you can Bobby Ryan. Scary Hill's own Bobby Ryan. How could I forget? Shari Hill's own, man. Oh, my God. Alex. Yes, sad day. Yes. Mr. Twister. Absolutely. Gabe has a great memory of meeting Johnny's father-in-law. He was so beautiful, proud of John and Meredith. I only met him once, served him while bartending in college thinking of him today. Absolutely awesome story. So Meredith is also from Jersey. If I'm a mistaken, I think so. Okay. It's a pretty good story, though. I appreciate that. Oh, my God. I can't even imagine drunk driving is absolutely inexcusable, but too many drivers don't respect bike bicyclists or pedestrians while sober either. This was preventable. Listen, I think that's a good point. I mean, I do see too, especially driving in the city, you know, people get upset with the with, you know, a biker on the road. And it's like, dude, the there's a literal lane for them. Like we build those lanes for them in the city. So yeah, I definitely do see that too. Sober or not, like, you know, the roads for everyone, you know, some people want to ride the bike. So yes, please, please, please, please, show some respect for that as well. Not just thinking of the family today, but also his teammates, specifically Kevin Hayes. Yeah, the poor guy has now lost two best friends. Absolutely terrible. J 11, we appreciate you coming here. We feel you as well. Tomorrow's not guaranteed. It's just a cliche that older people tell you, but it's the truth. It may be cliche, but it's spot on J 11. Sometimes you got to listen to old people. Yeah, they lived it. They know stuff. They do that. They do, Kelly. Yeah. Alex, y'all, we appreciate you coming in Alex. Yes, yes. Um, I mean, yeah, who do the F drinks and drives? I mean, you're your spot on there. You are spot on the sad thing as I think a lot of people do. Yes. I think more people than we know will have one or two beers and decide that they're fine enough to drive home. And even if you think that you are, like, it's just not worth the risk that you're not. Don't do it. Don't do it. Uber's not that expensive. No, it's like, like I said, much cheaper than a DUI. And also, you don't have to feel that pit. You don't have to feel like that thing in your heart for the rest of your life by killing someone. Yeah. Don't have to live with that for the rest of life. Just get that Uber. It's not, it's not that much. I don't know what to say devastating. Absolutely, Josh. We are right there with you. We appreciate you coming here, though. Um, have felt sick to my stomach since the news got married last year and the anxiety of everyone getting there safe was immense. Just an absolute nightmare condolences to the cadro family. It's so funny. You mentioned that idiot sandwich because so I just got married in Columbia a month ago. We're doing a celebration in Philadelphia next month. And my wife and I were talking about, um, you do like, you know, thank you bags for people who, who are leaving. We were talking, we were thinking about throwing some Uber gift cards in those bags as well. Uh, because yes, especially you're, you're right, idiot sandwich. You know, when you're having a wedding, obviously a lot of drinking is going on. You're, you're just hoping everyone's getting home safe. That's why a lot of people get those little buses, the, you know, transport, a mass amount of people. So please guys, please, please, please, please get that Uber. And yeah, that's, that's actually, that's a good, good thought. If you're, if you're having a wedding, that's definitely a good thought, idiot sandwich. Um, yeah, Alex can't something about hazy. It's too devastating. Um, Sean, I don't know what was podcast was saying, how excited he was for them to play together and have their sons grow up together. It was on, um, what chaos? Oh, really? Oh, about it. Yeah. It went up yesterday. Okay. Um, check that out as well. So yeah, it was very clear that anyone who knew him loved him. I did see a lot of the videos of the blue jackets fans dropping off flowers, jerseys in front of a nationwide arena, which so, so, so, so heartbreaking to see they definitely are feeling that as well. Um, James Bond brought it up. I feel like, I feel like I felt when Pelly died and I like again, I was not there. It was not live, I really thought of, but that truly seen upsetting as all hell, such a sad day and flyers history, such a dark day and flyers history. Um, and it like watching all those YouTube clips, it does feel a lot like, like we feel here today. Uh, so it's a, it's a good comparison there, but unfortunately it is super, super sad here. Yeah, we feel like we know these guys. We watch them over all the time. We, people like us, we're crazy, like we're crazy hockey fans. So like, we watch interviews with these guys and we watch all star games and we watch everything that they do. So it's, it's hard not to feel like you know them a little bit. Um, like they're a part of your life in some way. So like, it's super understandable that this is like, affecting hockey fans in a really profound way. Like it's, it makes sense. I mean, no, I'm sorry. Go ahead, Kyle. No, it's going to say like, you know, feel your feelings about it. Don't be like ashamed about. I saw, I saw what's the Mike Greenberg show on ESPN. They, oh, I think it was, I think it's a first take, but they opened up their show today talking about the news. Um, MLB Twitter account put out a statement. Like this is not just like a hockey store. No, no sports world. He was not, you know, I mean, not like it would be better if he was not a well-known hockey player, but he was like an extremely well-known hockey player. He was very good. He, you know, had an MVP season, not that long ago. Like he's, he was a big deal. I mean, I don't know about you, but, um, you know, a lot of my wife's friends were texting her, like, is JP okay? Like, yeah, I heard about the news. Um, and I'm like, I'm fine. I'm not the one that really should be worried, but I really appreciate you guys. But, you know, there's a whole family just lost two big parts of their family. So yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's a, I don't know. I don't know. What do you say? Yeah, what do you say? Nathan, there are no real words to say saturation all around. Thank you to PHO live for allowing the room for all the fans to do this. That's what's important here, I think. Yeah. Letting people get it out. And, and full transparency, like, you know, I had a whole plan for today's show and like, listen, you know, doing a show, you know, for Charlie and Bill is a daunting task. And then I, you know, we get thrown this news and made it even more daunting. And, you know, I was asking Kelly and our producer, Brenna, like, you know, what do we talk about today? Because obviously, I just don't feel like anything else would be too appropriate. And so we had the tough, the tough challenge today, too. But like in every one of these type of situations, like, I think that as a community, we need to all talk about it together. I don't think, you know, it's appropriate for, you know, just Kelly and I to just talk about our thoughts about it. Like, no, there are fans who feel the same way or probably worse than we do. So that's, that was the whole, that was the whole idea here today, anything, but we really do appreciate those kinds of words. But yes, we do feel it. Absolutely. Kyle, we appreciate it too. Thank you so much for coming in here, man. Yep, york. Exactly. This is the theme today, man. Reminder to hug your loved ones and tell them you love them. Life can end in any second guys. Absolutely. 100%. Gabe, I'm 23. This is my Kelly Lindbergh. Oh, wow. Okay. I feel very affected by this. And I'm not quite sure why unspeakably sad and all fast. That's a good comparison. It's a good point, man. We, this is because you're a human person. You don't need to think too hard about it. Like, this is something that should affect you. Yeah, absolutely. I think just like I said earlier, every single part of this story is just so unbelievably horrible. The wedding, both of them together, like his little tiny baby child, like so many things are just like, it's horrible. It's absolutely terrible. Emily, thank you so much for coming in here. Yeah. Yeah, we appreciate now. We appreciate you, man. We appreciate you. We appreciate your coming in here. Absolutely. Um, see, Johnny, yep, Johnny had a major impact on my life. He was my inspiration to start playing hockey and will forever be grateful for him. Rest in peace. JG 13 and Matt love and prayers to the family and friends. And yes, I would assume that he inspired more than one person. Like we talked about face of South Jersey hockey. And so, yeah, I'm, I'm, we're all, we're all feeling it. Um, Laura, I'm so tragic. I feel for the family. I don't wish any parent to have to bury their two children. Like, like, yeah, I mean, both of them at the same time. Oh my God. Yeah, it's hard to even think about considering actions and how they may affect others, not only something as awful and significant as driving drunk, but driving aggressively because where you need to be is more important than everyone. That's exactly what Kelly's point was. You know, we don't need to be selfish on the road guys. We're all trying to get to a certain spot. And yes, people, when you drive like that, people can't put, or you can't put other people's lives at risk, like Johnny and Matt's. So guys, just keep that in mind. You know, next time you're in a rush or next time you're driving emotionally, when you're upset or pissed off, you know, take a second. If you are pissed off or man, you know, pull over real quick, take a deep breath. Obviously, we talked about the drunk driving thing, don't need to do it. But there are ways to avoid those type of feelings, especially while you're driving. And in just in general, really, like we could all stand to remember that like, like you said, JP, like we're all in this, like we're all connected. Like if you think for a moment about like getting mad because someone's like walking too slowly or getting mad because like someone didn't put their cart back, like all of the things that we get so mad about and so reactive over are so silly. And all of us could just stand, I think, to just like think for a second about how insignificant all of the stuff we get so pissed off about is. And then if we could all just take a second to think, I don't need to be mad about this. Like, it's not worth my energy to be mad about it. It's not worth the consequences that could come if I act on being angry. Because we're all people just trying to live. And like, we could all stand to care a little bit more about everyone that we don't know. Because they matter too. They do. No, you're 100% right. And that's a really good point too. It's not even just dry. It's just like on a day to day basis. You know, that's why I say, we're a community. We're all family. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, the United States, we're all in this together. And I think it's extremely important to remember before we start doing selfish acts like driving drunk or trying to pass two cars because you're in a rush. It's just absolutely, it just doesn't need to happen there. I met both Johnny and Matthew at the Chex for charity event in where he's six years ago, both great due to sign autographs afterwards for everyone gone way too soon. And Johnny would spend a lot of his time in the offseason in the South Jersey area, which, you know, any other athlete, he could be going to Europe, you know, he could be going on extravagant vacation. I'm sorry, he did, but he spent a lot of time here. And then that's important. Like, this was home. This was home. Oh, man, it's, it's kind of, I mean, like, it's kind of lovely that so many people that are here in the chat were like personally affected by him in a positive way. It's nice that people have those memories and can share them with everyone else. And you want to, Kelly, like, obviously, like, this is such a super tragic situation, but like, I always feel like when there is a death, like, I think it's extremely important to remember them and cherish, cherish them, right? Just because they're gone doesn't mean we can't cherish that. And these stories, that's freaking awesome. They are really awesome guys. No, and it's, it's also okay to like, laugh about good things you remembered about this person to, to feel good feelings, like, don't feel bad about that either. Like, I laughed hysterically when I read that Nutella thing. That's so funny. How can you eat so much Nutella that you have to go to the doctor? So much. I can't even imagine how much that is. And that's hilarious. And like, it's okay. So, like, laugh that this guy ate so much Nutella that he had to go to the doctor. Like, that's very funny. And I think it's a lovely thing, actually, to, to laugh about people that you've lost because that tells you that they affected you in a good way. You know what? I think for lunch today, I'm going to do a Nutella sandwich out of, not a love of Johnny hockey. Don't eat too much. I'll call you Kelly to get me to the hospital. Kelly can't say, by the way, Kelly's been a rock star through all this. We really appreciate Kelly. Can't say frequently. I frequently agree with your hockey takes, but you've approached this with grace and your messaging here is very important. Thanks for that. And for the show all. Yes, that's why we need to Kelly here today, because definitely needed her love on this one, guys. Oh, the Vorsch the Vorschuck all star bit was so good. When he did you remember that JP? I do not. Okay. Thank you for that, Brenna. Yeah, Vorschuck, like back when the all star came used to be fun before the NHL decided to legislate all the fun out of it. They used to do like a thing where the players would do like a penalty shot, but like they were meant to do it in like the goofiest way possible. And at one point, Vorschuck, I think was wearing a cape, if I remember correctly. And Johnny was pooling him. And it's funny because Johnny's so small. And so he's like pooling Vorschuck down the ice. Well, Vorschuck, I think is wearing a cape. Somebody tell me if I'm wrong about that. My brain is very leaky, but it was extremely funny. And I think like a real just like snapshot of what kind of guy he was. It was very funny. Absolutely. All right. Yes, prayers and to their family and friends. Absolutely. It does hit close to home. Alex 110% man. It's just it is heartbreaking. Don't know about you guys, but it feels like this is perfect, Kelly. It does feel like a friend passed away today. Sports brings people together. It's important to acknowledge that whatever you feel about this, it's okay to feel and to be emotional. Absolutely. Gabe, you couldn't have said any better man. And like, you know, I like, listen, it's okay. It's okay to feel emotional. Like this morning, I'm like preparing for the Gargano show. I have the TVs on sports center on. And then the big red breaking news and Johnny Goudreau. And I was I was shook. You know, our producer Andrew asked me like, are you tired? What's going on? I'm like, dude, I'm just I'm honestly shucking up. I can't believe Johnny Goudreau passed away. So I feel that and I appreciate you letting us all know game. Sports do bring us together. That's another thing we could all stand to remember. Like part of the reason I got so heavy into hockey when I did is that. And you'll all be shocked to learn this that I was an awkward nerd and didn't have a lot of friends and found a little niche community online of hockey people. And they were like immediately like family. And that's I think one of the most beautiful things about being a hockey fan is that if you meet another hockey fan out in the wild, a stranger, immediately like, you have something that you could talk to this person about, that you know that they understand you on a level that somebody who's not a hockey fan wouldn't because we're crazy people. Like we're we're different from other sports fans, I think people who are like hockey first, hockey people are crazy. And so when you meet another one, you're immediately like, yes, you are one of my people. I am one of your people. We understand each other. And that is a beautiful thing. And like devil's fans, Rangers fans, I don't care who you are, like, we're all family. And and the way that we hate each other should be lighthearted and fun. And it should end at the end of the game. You know what I mean? Like, no, I don't hate devil's fans as people. Like, I'm not gonna like never I once dated a penguins fan for like a while. And I really liked him. So like, I mean, like, you can like, you know what I mean? Like, the hatred should be lighthearted, the the disdain that we have should be lighthearted. The rivalry should be lighthearted. Like, this is supposed to be fun. And we should all at the end of the day be having fun doing this. And like, all of us, you know, this kind of thing can remind us that like, we're we've said it a bunch of times we are a family. We're all in this together. We can support each other. We can love each other. Like, and it's not weird. Like, it's not weird to care about strangers just because they like the thing that you like. Like, it's okay to to feel like all of us are connected, even though we don't know each other. Like, I think it's a beautiful thing. And that's something that when something horrible like this happens, it can really, I think kind of remind us that at the end of the day, we're all we're all connected and together. And we should embrace that and care about each other a little bit more than we than we normally do. Yeah, you 100% right today, guys, we're not flyers fans, we're not devil's fans, we're not penguins fans, we're not jackets, flames, kings, ducks, whatever, maybe we're all today, we're all Johnny hockey fans. And we're all feeling this pain, we're all feeling this loss here. And it's it's it is it sucks seeing this news, but there's always a positive everything I always say, Kelly. And like, just seeing people together feels so communal. And I think that's a beautiful thing. And he brought it up to like sports has a weird way of bringing people together. But it is a beautiful thing. And everyone in the hockey community are together with the situation. And it sucks. But it is cool to say. Eddie, Sean, what's up, man? Thank you so much. Yes, everyone, please take care of yourselves. If you're feeling this a little bit more than others, please reach out to someone guys. There is help out there for you. It is it is rough right now. Yeah, do what you need to do to feel better. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, we don't know them, but we know how they make us feel sports being an outlet for many of us. We're when we're down, sports can lift us out of even if you just just three periods or four quarters spot on it. I speak and skate for a lot of people. And for today, doesn't feel like an escape. And I fully understand that. And so that's why today wanted to make do our due diligence and obviously open this up for Johnny talk because it just feels like the right thing to do. Yeah, there's there's a fandom. This fandom always wanted him to come home and play for the flyers. And he was Kelly, were you in on that in that bandwagon in 22 to bring him home? So oddly enough, we talked about this on the show yesterday, that it was true that he didn't fit the timeline. It was 100% true that at the time he didn't fit the timeline. But they were doing other things that suggested that, you know, signing Travis Sandheim, that kind of thing that was like, well, if he fits the timeline wasn't Johnny good girl for the timeline. And like, I don't, I've been trying not to think about this because I don't want to make it about that. But like, it makes me so sad that we didn't sign him just because like, I know how badly he wanted to be a flyer. So I just like, I wish, even though it wouldn't have been a good hockey move. And all of that, it, you know, it, I thought about it for a second this morning and I was just like, that he didn't get to do that. Yeah, you are spot on there. And like, I remember like hearing like the stuff like, there were like interviews where like, I guess like the the flyers didn't seem too interested, but like, he clearly was. And like, that was like, one of my reasons like, like, why wouldn't we go after him? But yeah, you're spot on. I mean, everything that has happened over the last two years is really what we should have been doing. And Johnny just unfortunately didn't fit that. But yeah, like, he really wanted to be in the orange and black. And that, that like, that little piece of it, it hurts even more. Like, he didn't get the chance to do it. And like, once he didn't sign here and he signed a Columbus, like, the, like, the one thing I thought was like, okay, you know, in like five, eight years, whenever my contract's done, we'll be good. Mitch Cobb will be ready. Johnny hockey will come back. And we'll win a Stanley Cup with Johnny hockey and Mitch Cobb and whoever else is the supporting cast. And that was always my dream. But yes, that definitely sucks. I did always think that at the end of his career, he would be here. Right. And like an Adam Oates type of situation where it was just like, all right, we know he's not good anymore, really. But let's just bring him on. Absolutely. He probably still would have been a little bit good. Yeah, he definitely was. He's pretty good. Um, let me see. Let's see, as a fan, this is going to hurt for a long time. I can't fathom the pain. The Goudreau family are going through devastating. Brian Knight, we appreciate that. Yeah. And I think that a lot of people right now, like you, you probably feel the most for that family, the sister who's going to get married, Meredith, who now is going to be a single mother of two kids, like it with, you know, and there's nothing that there's nothing she could have done to control it. Obviously, situations that you can't control, like, it really sucks. But like in this situation, like you just, I just kind of put myself in those shoes. Like I wish I was there to stop the car or something, right? Like, Oh, yeah, I can't even think about it much. Don't know. Okay, cool, cool, cool, cool. Hockey sports are meant to draw us all together. It's supposed to feel like family. And today feels like we are closer together, not for a great reason, but does feel like we are closer together. It does. Something like this, so tragic, no matter who is involved, just sorry for the everyone. Yeah, everyone. And if that is Johnny hockey's life, the family, the friends, the teammates, I'm sure that I'm sure that blue jackets locker right now is so devastated and like, think about like, you know, next morning team, they've had a lot. They had another guy die like two years ago. It's all that too. Like imagine that they have some professionals to help those guys get through this. Good. I can't. I can't imagine. That's a great point, Kelly. But a lot of teams are starting training camp next month. Imagine the blue jackets going to camp and seeing that locker empty, right? Yeah, those guys cannot be doing well either. This is terrible. Obviously, I think what's lost in this is how unsafe it is riding your bike on there. I mean, listen, we went over that and I get what you're trying to say here, but at the end of the day, I mean, someone lost their life. And so I can't. Yeah, but there's a point to be made there. I mean, for some reason, it seems like lately, biking has gotten extra dangerous. Like I live in the city and I would love to be able to just like, meet, you know, bike a mile and a half to wherever I'm going, rather than having to walk or take septa, which takes forever and is also not that pleasant. But like I'm genuinely terrified of biking in the city of Philadelphia. I will not do it even in a bike lane because I don't trust that I won't get killed instantly. So I won't do it. And part of the reason for that is because like we've been saying people aren't considerate of others. And everyone wants to think that their time is more valuable than anyone else's and that their destination is more important. And like, I've been stuck behind a biker on a one lane city street and you can't get around them and you're going eight miles an hour. But like, all right, you know, all right, you wait until they have room and they can move over and then you can go buy them. Like, it's not that serious. And that's that's what I hope people take away from this is like, nothing that you're doing is that important. Like, in all honesty, Kelly, like, you know, when I see a biker out there, like, I think to myself, like, wow, someone out there is being environmentally conscious. And number two, like, they're getting a nice little workout in, like, and they're going to work home, whatever may be. And like, and so like, okay, I get it, it can be annoying, like being behind a biker. But is it really that series like Kelly just said, it's not, I actually worked, I swear got more in steakhouse, which now closed down, but our bartender used to ride his bike to work. And Kelly twice. And I worked there for like a year and a half, places man got hit once by a bus, the other one by a rose, random sedan and like, it's like, holy crap, dude, like what's going on out there? But then like, you obviously hear people and you see the road rage from people with bikes. And so there are people on their phones or whatever. You know, many times I look over and I see somebody just like on 95 going 80 point looking down at their phone, like, guys, stop texting. Wait for a red light, like, you know what I mean? Like, you're not that important. Yeah, you don't know, there's nothing that important. You need to go on your phone, especially you just said 95, but we're on a busy highway. Like, I, I'm with that. That's everybody just reflect on how we live our lives, I think. Good point. That's a good point, Kelly. Condolences to Katie Goudreau, as are wedding memory, memories will always be associated with the loss of her brothers. Also, the columnist blue jackets family who are going through the second loss of an active player in three years, I couldn't even imagine. I don't think we've ever dealt with that a lot of sports history. I mean, he's can only imagine those jackets fans as well. Now I can't, can't imagine. Lyndon 49, what's going on? Kelly service was the last time I cried before a game. Yeah. Yeah. And if you guys have Kelly stores, I definitely just, I'm just curious. I definitely would like to hear those as well too. But a lot of you guys are bringing that up. But yeah, the correlation is definitely there. And it's just, it's just a sad day to just lose someone, not only just integral part of like our community, but like the hockey community, like we just talked about. So he's posted, say hello to. Oh my God. Say hello to Bo's dad for me. That broke me. Yeah, that's, that is absolutely heartbreaking. That's rough. Oh my God. Really sad heartbreak for the rank of Holly Dale. Yep. Our own bill, Tony Vochi. That's right. When then the Goudreau Goudreau, R.I.P to these legends. Yeah. Oh my God. Yeah. Yeah. Holly, Holly Dale family is definitely feeling that today. He's also has to deal with the Carter Black backlash. She hasn't involved really feeling for Kevin. Yeah, dudes just had a lot of stuff dumped on him way too much stuff. Way too much for one person. Um, hockey. Yeah, honestly, Timo, this is really how I feel right now. You know, and again, like I had a whole plan for today, but it just doesn't even feel like it's, it's, it's appropriate. Um, and obviously look, look, we're, we're all feeling it. We're all truly feeling it. And I would much rather have you guys tell us how you feel, uh, then talking about, you know, something that really just is doesn't really matter too much. So yes, it's, it's, it's nice that people have a little bit of an outlet here. Yes. Talk to each other and stuff. That's what we're trying to do guys. Um, as a cyclist, this incident eats me up, rest up Johnny. Yeah. I can hear yourself out there, bud. I can only imagine, I can only imagine how cyclists feel today. Oh, this, I think this was the player, Kelly, following the tragic loss of these Kivlinikies, Clevelandics. I wish Charlie was here to help us out with the pronunciation. I think it's Kivlinics. I'm also bad with pronunciations. Charlie's the best with it. Yeah. Bill and I are useless. It's only Charlie. Only Charlie can pronounce the names. Well, the thing was, is that, you know, Charlie, when he's off, the concern is always like a major trade is about to happen or major about to happen. And I, I'm sure Charlie did not would rather a trade happen right now than having to go through this news. Yeah. Um, and so, uh, shouts to our producer, Brenna, who gave me, just gave us the heads up, her home opener for the flyers this year against Calgary flames. Oh, there you go. Yep. Yeah, that's going to be rough. Uh, hopefully they give out free clean, uh, Kleenex is because we're all going to need that on that game. Yeah, it's going to be tough. Oh my God. Good thing I'll be sleeping because it's at 10 o'clock. Yeah. Jokes. Comedy. I thought it was our home opener. Okay. I thought it. Okay. Gosh. No, it's the flyer season opener. I'm with you. Yes. The West Coast trip that doesn't exist for me. She's on a sleepy head. I'm with you. I got a bedtime, too, Kelly. I'm with that. Yeah. Your life can change at any moment. We all need to hold everyone close and be grateful for what we have. And I love this message that you guys are built up bringing to us today. Thank you so much for that, Miller, man. Yes, guys, don't take anything for granted, those loved ones in your life and hold them a little, hold them a little tighter. If they, if they're mad at that, let's say, Hey, listen, I don't care. Squeeze them a little tighter. All right. Johnny was also a great inspiration for smaller, but that's a good point. He wasn't the biggest guy. He's the guy that you point to when you're like, stop acting like small guys can't be good. Look at Johnny could draw. Exactly. It's a good point, Alex. And that, yeah, listen, keep that moniker. If you're a small gold boy, if you're, if you're a player like that, keep that moniker. All right. You can go far. Johnny taught us. Uh, right. Someone just released you up. Absolutely. Such a talent. This is so wrong. Is there a God? No way there is such a such a terrible, terrible, terrible news that we got this morning. Small comfort knowing their last day was filled with love, family celebration, happiness. It's unfathomable and shocking. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Um, Steve, hey, Steve helping us out here. Stolar is a JVR where so they are. North Jersey isn't real though. I don't know. I don't know them. Well, I was going to say JVR probably tell you it's actually Central Jersey. You know, those Central Jersey. Brick feels like North Jersey. I don't know. It's all the way up there. And also Central Jersey isn't real. Doesn't exist. Not a real place. Unfortunately, I grew up here and I agree with that statement. North and South. Uh, Alex says, I don't have my driver license every day. I do not regret it. Hey, I like listen. If I never had to drive a car ever again, I would be fine with it. I am so with you. I'm so honest. I'm tired of driving. I wish we had like a much simpler public transportation system here in the States because I would definitely, definitely, definitely take more public transit. I love, I love walking. I love, I love riding a bike too. I really do. Yeah, it's nice. We're active. Um, my impression of Johnny was always one of light hope and passion. What a horrific tragedy. Yeah. Yeah. He seemed like he really did seem like a genuinely good person. Yeah. Yeah. I was nervous driving today. Watching drivers. I'm a Rangers fan, but love the stream too. Dan, welcome. Thank you so much, man. We really appreciate it. Again, we're all, we're all hockey fans today. We're not Rangers. We're not flies. We're not devils. We're all hockey fans. So we really do appreciate coming here, Dan and letting us know how you feel, man. Uh, not an act and driver's drunk. That's murder. I was getting nervous driving. Oh, that's the same one. I'm sorry. Oh, man, it's terrible. I will pray for the fam, for their family. Absolutely. Guys, listen, if you could just keep your thoughts, your, your prayers with the Goudreau family today, especially today. I can't even imagine what they're going through. It's, it's got, it has to be terrible, has to be terrible. Uh, it's funny. It's no matter what, how many bad things happen as a direct result of alcohol? Nobody can acknowledge is a day. Um, okay. No. Okay. Now that we can have Johnny hockey, I so wish we had Johnny hockey, but he was still a flyer and NJ Philly star. I, you know what? What I remember Johnny hockey. I'll, I'll think of that, that, uh, the P we picture that he has in the flyers, Jersey. Yeah. I posted on my Instagram account today. Listen, that, that is going to be the way that he was a Philly sports fan. He was one of us. He might not have been a flyer, but he was one of us. Absolutely. All right. Real quick. We, we actually do have two super chats. We want to get to before we sign off here. Uh, Gary B. Seriously. Thank you so much, man. We really appreciate the love, especially all this day. Uh, our IP, we will love and miss you, Johnny hockey, 110%. Uh, also Gary B says, I speak for everyone in this community. We, and listen, for me too, Gary, we love Kelly Hinkle. There are five dollars to say that it's reserved, deservedly so, deservedly so. And listen on a, on a tough day, Kelly, I'll say it was an honor doing this here with you. Yeah, JP, you did a great job. I appreciate it. Such a tough story. Um, like I said, and I've always been a sports fan, always been a sports geek. Uh, there's players who too, uh, have touched me in the way they play on, on the field, the ice, the rink, uh, the court, whatever may be. Um, but Johnny's going to be one of those players that the death really, really messed me up. Um, it doesn't feel right. Uh, we truly lost someone special and it's, and like you said, Kelly, it's not even really the, the talent that he was. It's just a person that he wasn't. So we really are, we really are feeling for it guys. But guys, uh, that's going to do it for Friday episode. Um, Monday or sorry Tuesday will be all full Monday, Tuesday, Charlie and Bill will be back. I'm sure they have heavy hearts as well here today. Uh, so guys, make sure you guys are staying tuned for more here at PHL sports and thank big, thank you, big shout out to all, uh, our die hearts. We really do appreciate it. Um, that's going to do it for today's edition of PHL Y flyers. Thank you so much for bringing up behind the scenes. Thank you so much to Kelly Hankel and big. Thank you to everyone here today, uh, for voicing their thoughts on such a tough day. So guys, from all of us here at PHL Y sports, thank you so much. Let's go flyers.
