We’re talking to Garry Wilkinson on this week’s episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast polished by Bowden’s Own. ‘Wilko’ was a core part of Channel 7’s coverage of touring car racing from the late 1970s through the late 1990s, and his voice is the soundtrack on several iconic moments throughout the sport’s history.
In the second and final part of our two-part chat, he talks more about the late Mike Raymond and how his impact on touring car racing’s TV coverage went well beyond his commentary, what it was like in the battlefield that was the Bathurst 1000 winner’s podium ceremony, and his thoughts and insight into the ‘Battle for Bathurst’ between V8 Supercars and the ARDC/Channel 7 in the mid-1990s.
He also shares stories from some of his other ‘combat missions’ during his time at Channel 7, including commentating and hosting the Olympic Games coverage, and opens up about his sudden and unexpected exit from the network.
