On today's crossover edition of Lockdown Wild and Locked on Blues, we dive into the offer sheet madness that took the NHL by storm with Haley Taylor-Simon of Locked on Blues. We'll also talk about some wild questions as Haley puts me in the ringer and we'll look at both of these teams' chances to fight for one of those final playoff spots in the West. My name is Seth Topal, host of Lockdown Wild. As mentioned, joined by Haley Taylor-Simon of Lockdown Blues here today, Haley, I think this is the first crossover we've had a chance to do. And so welcome in, we're getting back to the swinging things for the NHL season, which means got to check in with those central division rivals and see how things are going. Well, it's good to talk to you in this atmosphere. We do have a great round table that's coming out very soon with some of the central division hopefuls, but we definitely need to talk because our two teams are a little too similar for my liking. Yeah, it's frightening almost how closely these teams mirror each other and we'll talk Ryan Suter. We'll talk a bunch of different things here today. Ryan Suter. Yeah. He got to get an update on Ryan Suter. And we will. But I wanted to start with the two offer sheets because it's not something you see all the time. In fact, you hardly ever see it at all. But St. Louis just presented Edmonton, "Hey, we're not going to do it to you once. We're going to do it to you twice." And just to start, just take me through what both players bring to the Blues and how they were able to do this to the Edmonton Oilers because as we talked about in the round table, Conor McDavid, Leondry said, "I'm not pleased." Which is not a bad thing for us in the Western conference, but the double offer sheet was really interesting. So obviously, if you don't know by nail, then you must live under a rock. But the Blues had a double offer sheet to Philip Roeburg and Dylan Holloway. And I think fans of the Blues of course saw what Dylan Holloway did the other night against Utah. And he got a beautiful goal off a great pass from Captain Braden Shen, but he got it right in the back of the net without any hesitation. So that's what we're going to see out of Holloway. He's going to excel on the Blues because he's going to have more of an opportunity. Now, I know a lot of people locked on Blues have been asking me, "Where do I see Holloway?" I think I see him fitting in more towards the third line for now. And I think that there is a possibility for him to be a top six. But I don't want to put too much pressure on him, and of course, you know, coach Bancers had the same exact thing actually, that you cannot put too much pressure on Holloway and on Roeburg. Now, Philip Roeburg, where do I see him going? It's a little bit different with the defense with the Blues. I could see him being maybe on the second pair. Now, who do I think he's going to be with? Great question. I need to see more at a preseason. I mean, there's a couple of options. Maybe eventually he'll play on the first pair of Colton Pereco. And I think that's the aspiration, that's the hope. But right now, we need to lower the expectations. Not because they're not good enough, but right now, we need to see how they're going to do, how they're going to adjust. And the ceiling that they make, it's all up to them. They have all the opportunity. But again, the Blues have other talented players, like a Jake Neighbors. You also have Divorsky fighting for a spot. You have Zach Bolduk. So there is a lot of competition more towards obviously the offense. Around defense, I would feel very secure with Phillip Broberg right now, going into that second pair. Speaking of the defense, double buyout Ryan Souter joins the St. Louis Blues, or joined them in the off season, he's been around for a minute. And it initially looked, at least to me, like just kind of a veteran depth signing for this Blues team. But then you have the news surrounding Tori Krug that he's going to be out indefinitely. So is there a chance that Ryan Souter actually factors into one of those third pairing roles? Or is there enough depth in front of him that it's likely that he is just going to be essentially your seventh defenseman? I think he's being more in and out. I know a lot of people have said, "Oh, he's a replacement of Tori Krug." However, the one thing that Tori Krug is really good at, there was multiple things, but the one thing that made him stand out at least was the power play. And I know Scott Perunovich, he didn't have the best game last night, but he would even put Justin Folk in that position instead of Ryan Souter. I think Ryan Souter is a veteran presence. I think that the Blues' front office, including Doug Armstrong and team, even Alexine, they knew what they were doing with bringing him in because they wanted that veteran presence. However, I don't think that he is going to beat out some of these younger guys. Now, could I see Matthew Kessel potentially playing with Souter on the third pair? Absolutely. But on the other hand, you have to still remember that Tyler Tucker is fighting for a spot as well as Scott Perunovich. So there's too many talented players that could potentially take that spot. However, if Scott Perunovich doesn't play the way that we expect him to play like he did on Sunday, then maybe Souter does have a chance to get that secure six spot. Let's go to a rookie who impressed last season, although I'm having a little trouble with the actual stat line just because there are so many goals and so few assists. Jake Neighbors, 27 goal, 11 assists, a very successful season for him, really starting to kind of get acclimated to life at the NHL level. Where do you see his skill set taking him and more importantly for wild fans? What is he going to do for an encore after the 27 goal campaign? Yeah. So obviously, Neighbors had an impressive season and I just want to point this out because I think this is a very interesting thing. When the Blues played Dallas, Neighbors was actually winging Bouchy. So I think that, you know, right now, Bouchy, which is probably going to be your second line center. So I think they're going to have Neighbors actually alongside with him. I think the two work very well together. So that was something that I wanted to point out. Now with the assists, Neighbors isn't that type of player. He's the opposite of Robert Thomas in a way, right? Because Thomas loves to assist. And that was one thing I was so proud of him this past season is that he did score more. However, I'm not going to be upset if a player wants to take those opportunities and score. So I think with the Minnesota wild, he is a player that you should be worried about. I mean, if you want me to be honest, the two best players of the Blues have up front are probably Robert Thomas and Jake Neighbors. And I know that Neighbors did play on that first line last season with Robert Thomas. However, I think that the chemistry between Bouchy and Neighbors is significantly better when it comes to how they both play. So I think with Robert Thomas, you know, taking more chances, shooting the puck, which is a very good thing for Robert Thomas selfishly, I think that Bouchy is more of a type of player that's going to want to be, you know, somebody to help assist and to set up plays. So I think the two actually work very well together on that. I'm worried by the fact that you mentioned all that and Jordan Kyrie did not come up at all because he is just another guy that adds a ton of depth to this Blues team. It's interesting because I want to ask about Kevin Hayes because he was brought in to be kind of a bottom six guy, didn't work out. And so he moves on to Pittsburgh. And so, you know, what does this lineup look like and, you know, how much of a focal point is that top six going to be to try to fill some of that scoring plus Jordan Kyrie scoring like a bajillion goals himself? Yeah. I'm glad you asked. And you know, one thing with Kevin Hayes and I just want to say this because as a person, Kevin has gone through quite a lot. So I just want to send my condolences again to Kevin Hayes with everything to happen with Johnny and Maddie. He didn't pan out with, well, here in St. Louis. And that's a fact. Okay. And he said that when you know, he was using his media availability with the penguins. He didn't pan out. I hope Kevin, honest to God, I really hope that he, you know, finds whatever he needs in Pittsburgh and is able to have a good season. Yeah. But now with losing Kevin Hayes, you have an opportunity for Braden Shen to be the third line to be in the third line. You have an opportunity for Kyrie to be in the third line. You have an opportunity to really build up your third line and I did mention Holloway and I did not forget them at all. You know, so Shen, he may not play center of the season and that could be an adjustment. But I do think he's better on the wing. So right now the blues is offense is going to be significantly improved due to, and I hate to say this, just due to Kevin, he is not being here because it does free up some space. However, with Jordan Kyrie, he is such a valuable player, and I know people for whatever reason don't like him, but he does produce. Does he score the most goals? No, but he does score enough to make himself a presence and valuable on the ice. So I think that with all the lines kind of shifting this upcoming season, it's going to allow players to play different positions, like Bush doesn't really play center, Nail is in a play center. So you have players who have been on this team that are going to take on new roles and it's going to make the third and fourth line significantly stronger. All about options. It's all about having options in depth at the NHL level. Well, we will, we'll put me in the questions chair and we'll give blues fans the opportunity to hear about just how quiet of an off season it was for the Minnesota wild, amongst other things. Welcome back to today's special crossover edition of locked on wild and locked on blues. Once again, we are your team each and every day. Make sure to check out locked on NHL for your second listen today to get the full low down as we get closer to the start of the season. It's coming. We're getting close. So make sure that you stay up to date with all the big news in the NHL ahead of the season. All right, Haley, I am going to put on the guest cap, I guess is what I'll call it. And I know you've got some burning questions regarding the Minnesota wild, so I'm an open book. All right. So the one player that comes to my mind that strikes me as the biggest concern is Matt Boldy talked to me about him. I know that he's kind of, you know, the injury and things like that. But you know, should we be expecting him to play when the season begins? Should we be expecting him to be as dominant? Tell us what we should expect. So the whole timetable with what happened with Matt Boldy is that he did not practice on Monday and evidently he did not notice that he even had an injury. It's designated as a lower body injury because we are operating on like CIA levels of security clearance with NHL injuries. So lower body injury, but evidently he didn't realize that he had anything until after he left the facility, I believe on Sunday, skated, worked out, did the media availability, and then popped up on Monday. And so then the team announced that he was going to be out week to week with a lower body injury. John Hines said that they don't think it's serious and the hope is that he is going to be available at the start of the season. Now this is interesting because let's say he misses the first few games of the year. The wilds get a chance to showcase some of their top prospects that have been touted here over the last few years. Might be a guy like Riley Hite who has the potential to play up to nine games and then head back to, I believe, the OHL, really, really good playmaking type, elusive skater, slippery with the puck, feels like he could potentially be a good fit if he impresses enough in preseason to where Bill Garen wants to give him a chance. Otherwise a guy like Liam Ogren, who is kind of a power forward type but has a really good shot to his game, he could be elevated onto the second line. The hope is that Boldy won't miss any time but I have said on lockdown wild that I think it's important to give that spot as kind of a tryout for some of these younger guys. Matt Boldy is an important player and so the hope is that he's ready to rock when the season begins because you're talking about a perennial 30 goal scorer who, by all accounts, put in a ton of time in the weight room this offseason. So he was really setting himself up for a 35, 40 goal type season and Bill Garen even went so far. I saw on Twitter that he went so far as to say he envisions Matt Boldy as a 50/50 guy at some point in his career. So he's obviously a huge piece of what this team is trying to do. It's going to give an opportunity to see what the rest of the offense looks like which is good. So hopefully he's back and then he can just slot back into either first or second line wherever John Hinds puts him. Well, thank you for the answer and it's always a shame when a player does go through injury and he is one of those players that does put up a lot of goals. So non-biously, I hope that he does recover and he's able to play because he is a good competitor. So talking about one of my favorite things is Mark Andre Flurry. So last season, didn't have the best season. How are wild fans and how are you taking it for this season? What do you expect from him? How many games do you expect him to even play in at this point? This is funny because the team has been pretty vocal about the fact that they're going to go with essentially a three goalie rotation this season. Now it might not be that they carry all three for every game this year, but I think what the message is trying to be is that it's going to be Philip Gustafson, it's going to be Mark Andre Flurry and if either of those two are injured, then we'll see wild goalie prospect, Jesper Vollstead, get those starts. But Bill Garren's been very confident that because of the way that Mark Andre Flurry keeps himself in shape, even at 39 years old, that he's still capable of being a guy that can get up to 40 starts this season. I have my doubts as to if that is going to be possible this year because as you alluded to, there was a drop in numbers for Flurry last year and it's just to be expected with getting to be that age, especially as a goalie, your reaction time just kind of slows down and you end up doing things to try to overcompensate, which leads to getting beat. I'm hoping that Philip Gustafson gets closer to the form he showed a couple of seasons ago. And so I'm not super worried about him in that regard, but it's going to be a real question mark to see what Flurry is able to contribute because it'd be asking an awful lot of a young goalie in Vollstead's case to just say, here's 35 starts, go get him. There's going to be a split and it may be that Flurry starts the season and if the numbers just aren't there that maybe then they'd push him into like he's on the roster, but not necessarily playing, it's a total wild card. And it's an important one for this team because, yeah, see what I did there. It's a very important one for this team because the goal tending was not up to par last year. If the wild are going to get to the playoffs this year, it has to be. And so you can't afford to necessarily throw starts away if a guy just isn't pulling his weight. So this is going to be fascinating to see how this plays out because the three goalie rotation has been tried a few times in the NHL and it requires a full buy-in from everybody participating because if you don't have that, then people start to get a little cranky about their playing time. So, Rish Johnson, among some other players, he got injured after, I believe, a couple practices of your training camp in Minnesota and some other players have been injured. Is there any concern about this injury bug going around with the wild players? Because I feel like every day I'm reading a headline about injury Minnesota wild. I feel like anything less than what happened last year is a win for this team because the wild had only two players that played the full 82 games last year and that was Marco Rossi and Brock Faber. Carilla Miss Time, Matt Boldy Miss Time, Jewel Herx and Ek Miss Time, up and down the lineup. It is just one of those things that I think lends itself to the style that the wild play of being more of a physical team. This is why you see a guy like Marcus Fellino, who is now kind of in the 60s in games played because he plays a very overly physical style that tends to lead to some injuries climbing up as the season goes on. If they have as many injuries as they had last year, I will not make it through the season, let alone the entirety of the team. And so, I hope that they have a little better injury luck this year because last year there was none whatsoever. All right, and then finally, now be very honest with me, Seth, I'm counting on this. Is there any player on the Minnesota wild that you're kind of like, I'm not sure if they're good enough. I was currently on the team last season that maybe a rookie could take your spot and perform better. Fantastic question because I spent essentially my entire free time charting this last year. Marcus Johansson, who is, and I want to make the full distinction here because he is widely regarded as just an A+ teammate, and so this has nothing to do with that side of the puck. But there were 43 games last season in which he registered one shot or fewer on the second line for the Minnesota wild. And it just feels like that's not something that you can afford to have happen. Like you can't be a one-line team and expect to beat anybody, let alone in the central division, especially in the Western Conference, like you got to have at least two lines that can score and you don't shoot the puck, you're not going to score. And so that's where guys like Liam Ogren come in because I think if you had Matt Boldy and Jewelerks and act together on the second line, which sounds like is something that is going to be looked at. And that's solid. That's solid, actually. Yeah, and you throw Ogren in there who is a guy that is not afraid to shoot. And all of a sudden, then you've got a guy who can set things up from the perimeter. You've got the net front guy and you've got the intermediate target that can get the puck from A to C. Johansson just didn't bring a ton in that regard. And so he ended up being a guy that kind of got on my radar. I charted every single game that he played in and like I said, 43 with one shot or fewer and it feels like if Liam Ogren comes in and averages even three shots a night, that he is just that's just put it in the bank for 20 goals and like a 50 or 60 point season. Thank you for asking all my wild questions. Absolutely. Well, we will finish things up by just taking a look at how these two teams stack up amongst the rest of the central division because I think we can both agree. There's a pretty heavy top four that are favorites to go to the playoffs. But there's one team that I think I wouldn't mind yanking out of the top four if possible because of what they did to Carrillo a couple of seasons ago. I'm not bitter about it. So we'll talk about the central division and how things will play out as we finish today's episode of locked on wild and locked on blues after this today's episode of locked on wild and locked on blues is brought to you by indeed we are driven by the search for better. I would say so the only team that I would still be a little bit cautious about is going to be Nashville and the only reason why I say that is listen at the end of the day loves the stamco so I like I'm not taking away his talent in any way but it's a huge contract that he signed with a lot of money and there was a lot of expectation on him and you know he played with the lightning forever so it's kind of like you're putting him in this new environment new players I am generally very curious to see how you know that all meshes up. Yeah it's there are a lot of moving parts for that Nashville team and a lot of players came in this off season. It's going to gel or it's going to be like rubbing two pieces of sandpaper together so I guess now if they win the cup I'm completely wrong and that's on me but you have to remember two last season they were heading into the season being one of the bottom teams in the central so while I know every season you can make adjustments and things can change I don't have a read for the team and that's a fair assessment. That's a good call because I think a lot I think a lot of us see what they did and just project that it's going to come in and be like a seamless transition especially on defense like I'm I just I need to see it before I really really weigh in as to what's what they're going to be capable of now Dallas Colorado we've seen it plenty we know what's going on there but it's a lot of the same players yeah they've been rolling with the same mostly the same mix for the last few years and so that continuity is at an all-time high the team that for me in the top four that's kind of a question mark is Winnipeg because they had a season this past year in which a lot of things went right they didn't have a ton of adversity that they had to really deal with so what happens if that is the case now obviously there was a lot that happened with with Rick bonus stepping away from the team a couple of times so to say that they didn't have anything that they had to deal with is probably a false narrative but you know they didn't have a ton in the way of injuries that they had to overcome you don't get that every year like you don't get that injury lucky every season and so you know how do they manage if they have a bunch of injuries or if they have like 15 players that missed most of the season how do you how do you handle that and they also have players that are good like Kyle Connor however the one thing I will say about the Winnipeg Jets is in the sync up playoffs we saw them crumble and fall and I feel like they're just a good regular season team and then when it comes to the playoffs they don't have what it takes and I think that's going to mess with them this coming season because they had a lot of momentum last year heading into the playoffs so again having that adversity as you mentioned Seth again not having a lot of injuries which was very unusual in the NHL in the same age so there is a lot of pressure I feel like on the Jets and I could see them potentially missing out on the playoffs yeah it's it's going to be a fight for for those top four spots especially I feel like it does kind of I feel like it almost is assumed that all four of those teams will make it but the beauty of the NHL is that for all of the assumptions that are made usually one or two things goes wrong so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out ultimately let's do this to finish yes do you think the St. Louis Blues are in or out of the postseason we're all said and done and they're going to be in and I can give you a very easy explanation as to why sure they were the best worst team last season and I say this all the time so obviously they were so close if they had a couple more points they could have made it in however this off season they acquired some good talent Berber, Holloway, TEXIA you can even argue maybe you know having the Joseph brothers you have different talent that came in all the blues had to do was win a few more games especially those San Jose Sharks which I don't want to get into yet because that that was awful we don't have to talk about that it was awful so when you're so close and then you add more talent you don't really subtract any talent besides maybe Tori Krueger in that whole situation you're a team that's capable of being in you're gonna have Drew Banister for the entirety of the season and I do miss Craig Ruby and that's not anything on him but I think it's having that consistency of having your head coach the whole time it's the blues versus the blue Seth they're gonna be the reason why they make it in and they're gonna be the reason why they don't make it in but they play sloppy like they did in the middle end-ish of last season and they went on those losing tricks and they lost those winnable games they lost games where they had a two goal lead all the time it was awful so basically what I am saying is they beat the good teams they split with Dallas they got a hat trick in Colorado I believe it was two hattys with Braden Shen and Pavel Buchnovich I believe it was yeah so like they can beat the good teams yeah they were a good team you know I know they don't have a lot of the same players when they win the cup but they do have a good majority of them still in the core so it's gonna be them versus them hockey's a mental sport and if you're not you know fully in it mentally and you can't shake off those bad games and move forward and have a quick memory then you're just gonna continue to go down and spiral there I like I and I'll probably I'll probably use that as the title for this episode is that the blues just need to keep the blues in check to make the postseason I like that on the wild side I am at at this point I'm saying no to the postseason but I feel like if we like we talked about if some of those spots in the lineup that wild fans and many that cover the team feel like could be upgraded if they are upgraded this team takes on a little bit of a different dynamic and I think at that point they could be an interesting team down the stretch but how far into the season do they get before some of those changes get looked at that could be what keeps them out if they start off really slow and have to dig out of a deep hole like they did last year I have no idea what to expect I feel like there are 50 different possible outcomes for how the season can go and I just I really haven't picked which one I think will be the winner that's the beauty of it is now we get to see how it plays out for the the entirety of the season all I hope is one thing and that is for the Dallas stars not to win the cup I'm on board I they've been so successful but they just can never follow through in the playoffs and I'm just sick of you know Dallas we're so dominant okay well you know try to win it like win the cup like you've had so many opportunities it's sick a six-family cup that you want to be able to back that up like awesome work fellas well I can't even say that because Colorado actually I can't talk too much trash on this episode today Seth wild and blues fans agreeing that as long as Dallas doesn't win the cup we're good see we we came to a compromise here to finish things off yeah all the way down all the way down what's good yeah let's what do you think about that Jack Hailey thanks for thanks for joining here today you lead crossover and wild
