Training camp for the Cavs is a week away. One week from today, the Cavs will be in Florida at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. I will be there, I'll bring you guys coverage, super excited to be down there talking Cavs basketball, so excited that basketball season is just about back a week. From yesterday is Cavs Media Day and of course, later this week, we will be hearing from Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson and president of basketball operations, Kobe Altman as they will be holding their press conference this Friday. So what I've been doing is I've been thinking about, well, what am I curious about? What is there to learn about this team as real basketball gets closer and closer because we know what this roster is, there's not a lot of change, right? Like Jalen Tyson is really the only significant addition from the outside to this roster. But that doesn't mean things are going to be the same. So what I've done for today's show is I've put together a list of five questions that I cannot wait to find out the answer to because I think there will all be very important questions to determine what is the successful season for the Cavs, how, what direction this year goes in and how this team overall is going to look. And the first question that I've put together that I am very curious to see how Kenny Atkinson handles is what are the pairings going to be? Because I do think it makes a lot of sense and I would be surprised that if one of Darius Garland or Donovan Mitchell is not always on the floor and one of Evan Mobley or Jared Allen, maybe not always on the floor, but on the floor, a vast majority of the time. There might be a lineup or two where the Cavs don't have either of those guys on the floor. I wouldn't imagine it is a very long lasting lineup, but I could see the case where that does happen. So how are those pairings going to be separated? Because in essence, you're going to have two of the four core four on the floor at all times. That's my belief. I don't see why that's something that should change that was really the case when everyone has been healthy over the past couple of years, that has been the case. So what are the pairings going to be? Because you're going to have one of Donovan and Darius, you're going to have one of Jared and Evan. It makes sense, at least in my opinion, to sort of pair one of each together, right? Like if Evan is on the floor, he's most likely on the floor with Darius or Donovan. If Darius or Donovan is on the floor, they're on the floor with one of Jared or Evan. I think keeping those guys married is probably the best for continuity. It's the best to find a rhythm within the team. What is that grouping going to be? So my thought process here is that Donovan Mitchell makes a lot of sense to play with Jared Allen. Donovan has played, in my opinion, very well with Jared Allen over the last couple of years when those two have shared the floor. I think that has been a very effective pairing for the Cleveland Cavaliers. I think that Jared Allen is a tremendous screen setter. That's one of the things that he doesn't necessarily get a ton of credit for. And I know screens aren't exactly the most sexy thing in the world to talk about. But I do think a big part of why the Cavs are successful with him offensively, despite the fact that he's not someone that spaces the floor from the outside and isn't featured much in terms of a back-to-the-basket game or even a face-up game, is because Jared Allen is a very good screen setter. He is someone that I think is able to create quite a bit of space, not because he's got gravity defensively, but because he can separate the primary defender of someone like Darius Garland or Donovan Mitchell and give them the room to operate like that. It allows those guys to attack mismatches. And I think that is the one thing that offensively you can look at and say, "Well, I think Jared Allen does a much better job of that than Evan Mobley." If Evan Mobley starts to be a better screen setter, and I think part of that is getting stronger, I also think that Jared Allen just a little bit wider, like he's got broader shoulders than Evan Mobley and I just think that matters in this conversation. But I think that he and Donovan Mitchell are really good-parent. And I think Donovan has a history of playing with guys like that, because you look back to his time in Utah, who did he spend a lot of time on the floor with, it was Rudy Gobert. Now, Rudy Gobert is a better screen setter than Jared Allen. Jared Allen is better at a number of things offensively than Rudy Gobert, but I do think Rudy Gobert is one of the best screen setters that we've seen. So Donovan has played with that for the vast majority of the minutes. He's been on the floor in the NBA. So I think having those two together makes a lot of sense. I think Jared is a very good finisher at the room when he has the opportunity, but I think he's able to do other things elsewhere. And I also think it makes sense to have Evan Mobley and Darius Garland on the floor together. I do believe that Darius is a little bit of a more creative ball handler than Donovan Mitchell is. I don't think he needs the same type of separation from screens. And I think that he can be effective playing in more than just a pick and roll, obviously Donovan Mitchell can too, that you don't have to be a basketball savant to recognize just how talented Donovan Mitchell is and how his overall offensive game is very clearly the best on the Cavs. But I think that the creativity Darius Garland plays with is something that allows him to be in a position to be successful, even if he's not playing with an elite screen setter. This isn't to say he couldn't be successful with Jared Allen, obviously that's not the case. He can be very successful with Jared Allen, but I think that he and Evan Mobley make sense. And I think it does make sense too for Darius to be on the floor because one of the other questions I'm going to get to in a minute is about how Evan Mobley is going to be used offensively. But I do believe Evan Mobley is a better playmaker than Jared Allen with the basketball in his hands. And I think that having someone out there that can carry a little bit more of the offensive load in Evan Mobley alongside Darius Garland makes sense to make this Cavs offense go. I do think Evan is a very good finisher at the rim. I think he needs to get stronger. I will be very interested to see what he looks like when we're allowed to see the Cavs on the floor again. That'll be a very interesting thing to me is how does Evan Mobley look physically. I'm not talking about what does his jumper look like. I'm not talking about his ball handling just physically. Does Evan Mobley look like a guy who has gotten stronger, has put on a little bit of weight? Those are things that I am very curious to find out about him because if those are the case, then I think he's going to be a better finisher around the rim. I think he will be a better screen setter. I think he will be those things. So that is part of the reason why I think him and Darius Garland make a lot of sense together. I think those two do. And Evan, as I mentioned, I think he is a good playmaker. I think that using him in certain spots can be something that can help out Darius Garland too because I also believe that a good chunk of Darius Garland's game should be when he's off the ball, he needs to be taking catch and shoot three pointers. I think that Evan Mobley can create some of those for Darius Garland. I'm not so sure that Jared Allen can, where with that of a Mitchell, I'm not necessarily asking him to be in that spot. I'm not asking him to be a catch and shoot three guy. I'm not asking someone to, other than Darius Garland, sometimes Carousel Vert. I'm not asking for someone else to create his shots, but I do think Evan Mobley can, in some cases, create shots for other guys, and I think Darius Garland can benefit from that. I think that's the case. I think those are the pairings that make the most sense. We have, obviously, when Evan and Darius were out for a significant portion of last year seeing what it looks like when it's just Donovan and Jared together as a pairing, and that looked really, really good. I think if you can replicate that a little bit with the other pairing when those two are on the bench, the Cavs offense could be in a really good spot, but that is burning question number one that I have for new Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson, and these questions, of course, could also be, be asked of players, Cavs president of basketball operations, Kobe Altman, Cavs general manager Mike Gansy, like these are questions organizationally, but some of just the more basketball ones, like this one, I'm very curious to hear how Kenny Atkinson feels about these things, and I also do wonder too, if the minutes are down a little bit, which we will be getting to just a little bit later on in the show, how does that affect these pairings, but I think that question right there, and what the answer to that question right there is, is going to be something that is very important to watch as we look at this season, as we talk about this season, and as basketball returns, that's going to be a very interesting thing to follow, is how are those guys going to be prepared? I believe it should be Donovan Mitchell and Jared Allen and Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, I think that's maximizing everybody. Up next, what should the offensive plan for Evan Mobley be? I'm not talking about how should he be prepared, what should the Cavs be trying to utilize in his game? That's straight ahead right here on Lockdown Cavs. Today's show is brought to you by Game Time. Game Time should be your go-to ticket marketplaces, my go-to ticket marketplace, and it is that for a number of different reasons. One, I love the fact that on Game Time, you can toggle on all in pricing, and you know how much you're going to be paying for your seats. I don't like to be surprised, bamboozled, bombarded at the last minute with these taxes and fees, so what I do when I'm searching for tickets, whether it's to a Guardians game, a Cleveland Browns game, a concert in Cleveland, something of the like, I click on the all-in pricing toggle. I toggle that thing on, and then I know what I'm going to be paying. The other thing I really like that Game Time has is they will show you what your view of the stage, the field, the home plate, whatever it is for the event you're going to. They will show you what that view is going to be from your seat. When I'm buying tickets, I want to know, okay, I'm going to a Guardians game. I want to know what home plate looks like. I want to know what my view for my seat is going to be in Game Time provides you with that experience. The Guardians are going to be playing. They are going to be playing home playoff games. You're going to want to go to those games. The calve season is right around the corner. You know what you're going to want to do? You're going to want to go to calve games. The Lakers are in town at the end of next month, LeBron James returning to Cleveland again. It's going to be a great environment where you're going to go for tickets, game time. That's the place to do. So what you do, download the Game Time app, create an account and use code locked on NBA for $20 off your first purchase. Terms do apply, but again, download the app, create an account, use code locked on NBA. That's L-O-C-K-E-D-O-N-N-B-A for $20 off your first purchase. Terms do apply, what time is it? It's game. This is Jake from Lock Dawn. Lock Dawn has teamed up with State Farm to spotlight some of the greatest supporting players in NBA history. The story of the NBA can't be told without mentioning players like Kobe Bryant, Shaquille, Neil, or Tim Duncan. The stars usually dominate the league, but more often there are special role players that help propel their teams to victory, and no other role player found more success than Robert Ory. Ory was the 11th pick in the 1992 draft and made the All-Rookie team, though he was never an All-Star, he was always a clutch performer. Ory's teams never missed the playoffs and won 7 NBA championships over his 16-year career for the Rockets Lakers and Spurs. That means from 1992 to 2008, if your team had Robert Ory on it, you had a 44% chance of winning the title. Ory was a solid defender, offensive connector and shooter. He earned the name Big Shot Rob by hitting some legendary game-winning shots in the playoffs. Kobe, Shaquille, or Tim may not have won all the titles they're known for, if not for Robert Ory. Everyone needs someone like Robert Ory in their life to give them an assist and push them over the edge of greatness. Sometimes, you and I need that kind of support, too. Think of State Farm like a key role player on your team, so when you need help protecting the things that matter most, remember the jingle and just say, "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there." Thank you again for making locked on Cavs your first listen every day, very much appreciate everyone that did listen to the Max Truce interview. Very happy I was able to have Max on on yesterday's show, if you missed that, go back, check it out. Also, had George Nyingon, middle of last week, thought that was a really awesome interview as well. I thought George was a lot of fun. Certainly, both those guys were great to catch up with and shout out to Sam Merrill, too, who I had on the pot earlier this summer, but all three of those guys, terrific interviews, go back, listen to them, search them out if you missed them. But thank you again for making locked on Cavs your first listen today, and every day. So burning question number two, I've got for Kenny Atkinson, Kobe Altman, and the rest of the Cavs decision makers is, what is the plan for Evan Mobley's offensive season? How is Evan Mobley going to be utilized? Because we're at a point where it is year four for Evan Mobley. He has signed a Max contract extension. We know that number can get even bigger if he reaches all NBA status this year. So how do the Cavs plan on using him? Do they plan on keeping him in the same role as previously where what he was doing was enough. And him just being a stellar defender and a secondary or sort of in the background, complimentary player and offense is good enough, or are they going to put him in position to where he can take the next step offensively? I think that right now Evan Mobley is a slightly above average offensive player. I think that Evan Mobley has the possibility, the capabilities to be a somewhere between great and elite offensive player. I don't know that he's ever going to be the guy that we're going to be like, man, Evan Mobley was a bucket when we look back on highlights on Twitter 20 years from now. But I do think he's somebody that can go out there and average 22 points a game pretty efficiently in today's NBA with the skill set that he has. But how are the Cavs going to put him in that position? Are they going to hope that he has put on some weight, has gotten stronger and become a better screen setter and thrive in that role where he is helping to create opportunities for others by creating space for them and then diving at the rim and catching lobs and being in that role where the basketball really is not in his hands a ton, are the Cavs going to put the basketball in his hands more and allow him to be a playmaker for others, allow him to face up at the basket, allow him to attack off the dribble, are the Cavs going to want to play in transition? We will talk about pace coming up a little bit later on in today's lockdown Cavs. But are they going to want Evan Mobley to push the pace to find easy baskets in transition to show off his athleticism, which I do believe is a really strong point of his game. And I think the best we've seen Evan Mobley on the offensive end of the floor is when he can grab the ball off the rim on a miss for the other team on defense and then race down the floor and go for a dunk layup find an open player on the Cavs. I think that's when Evan Mobley has been his best or in I guess the last option here are the Cavs going to stick Evan Mobley in the corner and hope that his three point shot where he shot 37% from three last year on 1.2 attempts per game, which is a very low volume. Are they going to hope that that volume goes up and the percentage stays the same and he becomes a spacer from the outside. The answer that I am hoping to hear, the answer that I think brings the most out of Evan Mobley is the Cavs want Evan Mobley to be somebody that has the basketball in his hands, that is making place for others and is able to attack the basket off the dribble because he's got a great face up game. Now, I think the jump shooting is something that needs to be part of that because he can't be somebody that defenses can sag off of. He needs to be able to make teams pay, whether it's from the mid range or beyond the three point arc, but I think the key here, I think the best thing for Evan Mobley and the best thing for the Cavs offense, I think are the same thing. I think it's Evan Mobley being able to attack and I think it's Evan Mobley being able to find his teammates because I do believe that he is somebody that is a good passer, especially for his size. I have been very impressed with the play making prowess that he has shown in the first few years of his career, but I would like to see him get more opportunities to do so. I think that putting him in that position is probably the best thing for his development on offense. I also think it's probably the way to make this Cavs offense the most efficient it can be with him on the floor. I would like to see him shoot more three pointers shot, I believe it was 1.2 last year. I'd like to see that number be around three and a half, maybe four, I'd like to see that usage go up a little bit for Evan Mobley, but overall, I would like to see the basketball in his hands more, creating opportunities for himself and creating opportunities for other guys because I think that's getting the most out of Evan Mobley. I really do. Question number three that I have for the Cavs. What sort of pace does this team plan on playing with this year? So the last couple of years in the Donovan Mitchell era, as we will call it, the Cavs have been dead last in the NBA in pace. That was Donovan Mitchell's first year in Cleveland in the 2022-2023 season. They were 30th in pace. Last year they moved up a little bit. They were 24th in pace. That number I think was influenced pretty strongly by the fact that they were a middle third team. They were 20th in pace from the time that Darius Garland and Evan Mobley were out with injury in mid-December until they came back in early February. They were 20th in the NBA in pace in that time. Kenny Atkinson, conversely, has been the coach of teams that have played at a much faster pace relative to league average than the Cavs have. The four years that he's spent in Brooklyn, and I know you every day or some particularly, have heard me say this. These teams were top 10 in a league in pace three times, he was there for four years, and the fourth time they were 11th. So they have played, again, relative to league average much faster than the Cavs have. I'm not saying that the Cavs need to be 11th in pace. I'm not saying they need to be 7th in pace. I don't know that that is getting the most out of them. But do the Cavs want to be 15th in pace? Do they want to be 17th in pace, which would be a pretty big uptick from the past? I think that is one of the things to get back to Evan Mobley. I think that is one of the things that could really benefit him, is if he's able to play faster, if he's able to get more transition opportunities. If he's not tasked with trying to force offense at the end of the shot clock, but the Cavs are getting into their offense with 20 seconds on the shot clock instead of 15, as we've seen so many times in the past. I think that is something that really would benefit everybody on this team. Now, the pushback is, well, you know, it's hard to play fast when you've got two big men on the floor. And you're right. It is. But Kenny Atkinson even mentioned in his introductory press conference that it's hard to play fast with two bigs. It is. But the Cavs don't have two slow bigs. Jared Allen is not the quickest guy in the world. But it's also not like watching Boban run up and down the floor either. Evan Mobley, I think, is pretty athletic. I'm not going to confuse him with Janis, who is a similar size as him. But I think he's more athletic than the average guy in the NBA of his size. I believe those guys can get up and down. The defense might suffer just a little bit because of it, but I think it's a trade that the Cavs should be willing to make because I think it's a trade that makes them so much better offensively. And that is something that Kenny Atkinson really is being tasked with handling here. Up next, how big is Kenny Atkinson's ideal rotation? I know in the past it hasn't been a very big rotation here in Cleveland. How much could it expand in Cleveland under Atkinson's leadership? That's next right here on Lockdown Caves. Today's show is brought to you by Fandal and NFL fans. We saw two games last night, how the Cincinnati Bengals dropped to 0-3. What a shame, just tragic stuff. The Jacksonville Jaguars also pretty bad, so don't feel nearly as good about the one win that Cleveland has this year. But NFL fans, you can start the season with a big return on Fandal. Fandal is America's number one sports book. So when you get a hunch in the middle of the game, what you can do is you can check out the latest stats, view live, play by play, and so much more on the same page where you place your bets. That sounds like a pretty cool experience if you ask me. You're able to do all that stuff right inside Fandal's app. All you have to do, go on your phone, download the Fandal app, and you can be enjoying football that way. You can have it on the TV, but you might want to hold off just a little bit because you could be spoiling things because this Fandal app is accurate. It is up to the moment accurate, so it's something that it is, I think, makes for the best possible enjoyment experience, we will call it. Maybe you do think that Cleveland's going to bounce back this week. I don't know how confident I'm feeling right now, but maybe you think they're going to go to Vegas and want to gain their favor by a point and a half on the road. It's, I don't know that I feel good about them as a road favor considering the state of their quarterback play right now, but if you do Fandal is the place to go plus, you can get started with $200 and bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first $5 bet. That's $200 in bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first $5 bet. Just go to Fandal.com. That's F-A-N-D-U-E-L.com again, $200 in bonus bets when you place your first $5 bet. Hi, I'm Jake from Lockdawn. There's a lot to say when buying a new home or car, but really the first words you want to say are like a good neighbor, state farm is there and trust me, as someone named Jake, that is a fact. That's the phrase that will help you feel good knowing that you have people who could help you find the right coverage for the things you want to protect. Insurance doesn't need to be complicated with a state farm agent. With so many coverage options, it feels good knowing you can find what fits you because your situation is unique and state farm is there to help you feel supported with the coverage you need for your car, your home, and even boats, motorcycles, RVs, and other things that matter to you. And when you need ways to get help, don't yell or be angry because state farm gives you options there too. In person or on the phone with your local agent or on statefarm.com or their award-winning app, state farm lets you do things your way. So when you need help protecting the things that matter most, remember to say like you good neighbors, state farm is there. So Kenny Atkinson historically has played a little bit of a longer rotation, which also has meant that he has played his starters fewer minutes in the past than the Cavs. I would bet that those numbers are down a little bit. To Donovan Mitchell last year, I don't have this number handy right now, but I believe he averaged upwards of 35 minutes a game for the Cavs. That number, if I had to guess, that number is going to be about 32 or 33 this year. Two minutes might not sound like a lot, but when you stretch out two minutes over 70 games, which I think is a fair presumption to say Donovan Mitchell is going to miss a little bit of time, not much but a little bit of time, 70 games I think would be a good season. That's 140 less minutes, just by shaving 2 minutes off a game. That's a big deal. This also, I think, allows Kenny Atkinson to squeeze more into the rotation because maybe someone like Sam Merrill is the 11th guy, well I personally think Sam Merrill should be on the floor because I think he brings a shooting touch that not many other role players off the bench have on this Cavs deep. So I think finding minutes for him could be a challenge, but I think it's a necessary thing to get done. Is he the 10th guy? Is he the 11th guy? Just Jalen Tyson deserves minutes as a rookie. Where does he slide into the equation? So how deep this rotation goes is something that I'm fascinated to find out from Kenny Atkinson. And while his ideal number of guys being played might be a little bit lower, can he get it to 11? I don't know. I know with JB Bicker's staff. His ideal rotation was about nine guys. Now at times in Cleveland, I don't think he trusted nine guys. I think he trusted like four and a half, but he would play seven or eight. I don't think Kenny Atkinson is going to be like that, particularly not in the regular season. Now when the postseason arrives, maybe things are different. I don't know. But in the regular season, I would expect it to be just a little bit, a little bit longer with fewer minutes for the starters under Kenny Atkinson. Finally, question number five, my fifth and final burning question about the Cleveland Cavaliers for Kobe Altman, Kenny Atkinson, Mike Gansy, the rest of the decision makers. What is considered to be a success this season for the Cavs? I think organizationally, the Cavs considered last year a success. They won a playoff series. I think the Boston series might have been a little bit closer to the five game series and they can say, well, you know, if Donovan Mitchell was healthy, if Jared Allen was healthy, we might win another game and maybe they're right. I don't know. But what is the success? Is the success getting back to where they were last year and what I think is a very good Eastern conference or are the goals internally? No. For this season to be a success, we need to be a conference finals team. What are the goals for the Cavs? This is something I would like to know. I would prefer that the Cavs put this on record. Now I understand these things can change throughout the course of the year. The goals as seasons evolve and injuries do happen in this league, as we unfortunately know, we can't turn injuries off like it's a video game. I know goals evolve and I know goals change. But I do think that this team, considering that they have continuity, I think they have an upgrade at coach. I think they have a superstar and Donovan Mitchell. I think anything less than a conference finals appearance for the Cavs is probably not aiming high enough. So I do want to find out just what are the goals for this Cavs team inside the organization? Do they have championship goals? Max Chures mentioned that on this very podcast, Georgie Ng mentioned that on this very podcast. Or is just getting to the conference finals enough. I'm very interested to find out. Thank you again for making lockdown Cavs your first listen today and every day. I'm back to five days a week. I was five days last week, five days this week. I will be in Florida for training camp. Next week cannot wait for that. Also, this Friday, I want to do a mailbag episode. It's going to be my last, I guess, off season episode of the show. So I want to do one last mailbag before we start having availability and start having just more stuff going on every single day where I don't know how much time I will have for mailbag episodes. But I want to do a mailbag episode this Friday. I will be recording that Thursday night. So get your questions in. You can drop them in the comments right below. You can tweet me @realdecunningham or like I said, drop them in the comments. But I would like to do a mailbag episode. So if you've got things to ask, if you've got things you want to know about the Cavs, this Friday will be the day. This Friday will be the day training camp starts next week. I cannot wait. Thank you again for making locked on Cavs your first list every day. Check us out wherever you get your podcasts, Apple Spotify anywhere else or on YouTube just search "locked on Cavs" and I will be back tomorrow.
