USC made its first visit to the Big House since 1958 and left with a 27-24 loss in a game they should have won easily and I have a reaction to the game.

This is my instant reaction. USC lost, 27-24 to Michigan on the road, and it shouldn't have happened. I am mad as hell, and I'm not ready to accept this loss. It's not a happy person right now. Coming into this game, Michigan had no quarterback, could not throw a hold pass. I am watching warmups, and the dude is sailing balls 10 yards over his receiver's heads. This is during warmups, no pressure, nobody's in his face, he's just throwing the ball. Well, didn't seem to matter. Michigan ran for almost 300 yards in this game, and they were able to come from behind, and win the game 27-24, and it should not have happened. You know why it shouldn't have happened? Because it starts at the top with the head coach. Let's start with play call. So USC took the lead 24-20, and got the ball, four minutes left. Couldn't win the clock out. No, it's it, when the rally starts to get cute, let's see if we can get another score. Let's hook the game away. He said, after the game, I thought it could have been better. I don't think I called it a very good drive there. We don't have to start there, we can go back to the beginning of the game. I have no idea what was going on, but let's go over some of these stats real quick. Miller Moss, 28 for 51. USC threw the ball 51 times. What? They ran the balls 21 times. 96 yards total. You want to give a little bit of credit to Michigan's defensive line. They're pretty stout, they're pretty good. But USC's offensive line, terrible, pathetic, played really bad. And I know I sound really harsh. This is my instant reaction. I'll have a full breakdown on my next episode of lockdown USC, but I needed to get this out there. Needed event. It's going to be a little catharticism for me. I mean, again, let's start with the head coach and the play call. When there's four minutes left in the game, run the ball, even if you don't score. Take time off the clock. It's your friend. The other thing that I was, I'm starting to learn, not really learn, but starting to become a little frustrated with head coach Lincoln Riley, is his ability to use clock management, obviously I'm talking of this right now, and management of his timeouts. That's one aspect. How about start challenging some calls on the field or calls that aren't being made on the field? Where are they spotting the ball? Did you even consider the targeting shot that had Makai lemon taken out of the game? The first half the team performed, they just executed poorly. No other way to put it. Left tackle has some big time challenges. Michigan wasn't doing anything exotic on defense. There are four guys who are pretty much beating the U.S. these five guys on the opposite line, even when you had some help with a tight end, or they're running back hanging out for path protection. Wasn't happening. Was I a steward, Derek Moore? They were beating U.S. these tackles. There was a problem at right guard. Yeah, they made an adjustment, but it was at that point is like, you know what? You need to figure this out. I don't want to sound uber critical, but here's another perfect example of play caller. You've now incorporated the tight ends back into the offense. Congratulations, love it. Great, been asking for it, begging for it, pleading. How about running your tight end vertically up the seam and set a horizontally? Lake McCree cannot run. So you're going to ask him to run sideways and then try and turn it up field. That's not good play calling. As a result, hopefully Lake isn't going to be injured too bad because he took a big shot. He was surgically repaired knee, one because the wide receiver blocking wasn't very good throughout the game. But also, you put him in a bad position. I can't, and I'm sure they did run some vertical seam routes, but every time Lake just catching the ball, it was out in the flat. And now he's got a turn up field. He doesn't have that type of mobility anymore. I don't think they stuck with the run game enough. We'll get past that. For me, this game was not lost on the player's effort. This game, if I'm going to point the finger at the loss, starts with the coaching staff. You want to look on the deepest side of the ball? I told you, Michigan cannot throw the ball. Meanwhile, you're still only putting seven in the box, sometimes six. Make them throw the freaking ball. It's these types of things that I don't understand. This is what gets the fans upset. Got to do better than that. It wastes efforts by players who are doing it as much as they can. I thought you would see played pretty well defensively, although they did give up a few, you know, explosive plays or they're lost. Oh, this is really, really difficult. I'm having a hard time digesting this, the more I think about it. At the end of the first half, you're trailing 14 to 3, you can't even execute a Hail Mary. Instead, you know what? Run the ball, get a few extra yards, run your, run Michael Lance out there. Let him try a long field goal. Don't give yourself an opportunity. That's what happens. All right, let's take a deep breath, let's do this, and we'll come back a little bit more. Did I hear you're shopping for a car? Because I've been at it for ages, such a time suck, right? Not really. I bought it on Carvana, super convenient. Oh, then comes all the financing research, am I right? Well, you can, but I got pre-qualified for a Carvana auto loan in like two minutes. Yeah, but then all the number crunching in terms, right? Nope, I saw real numbers as I shopped, found my dream car and got it in a couple of days. Wait, like you already have it? Consistently, if you're gonna run the ball, why are you not trying to get to the outside? Why are you constantly running between the tackles to prove that you can? If you can't do it. I mean, again, it's the play column. I saw no ingenuity out there, no creativity. Miller-Mossness under constant duress. Did anybody consider, hey, let's roll the pocket. Let those rush edges from the Michigan players are gonna come up hard, use that aggressiveness against them. But again, stick to the game plan. Here's another thing. Love Kyron Hudson, makes some great tough catches. Let's focus on making the easy catches for now on. You cannot drop passes at end drives. It's a first down. All of a sudden now it's second and 10. It's these types of things that killed USC. But at the same time, you wanna point out, you know, percullian efforts. Woody Marks, okay. He didn't give up on a play. He missed on pass protection. Miller-Moss bumbles. Instead, Woody didn't quit. Kenneth Grant, defensive tackle picks the ball, starts running up field. Woody says no, takes the ball back. Fortunately, because of Woody's extra effort, USC was able to score on that. But it's those types of things. You needed that extra effort, because USC turned the ball over. I didn't even bring up Miller-Moss's pick six. I would say that's what USC needed. Instead, Michigan's turning the tables. The defensive effort was good. The effort was good. But you can't be good, good, good, good, good. And then all of a sudden give up a 43 yard touchdown run. Be good, good, good, good tackling, getting TFLs, and then giving up a 63 yard run. It's those types of things. You've brushed your butt so hard to do all that good work. And then all of a sudden, somebody hits the wrong gap. Guy goes through the hole untouched. You know they can't throw the ball. Make them throw the ball. Dare them. Put eight guys in the box. I was screaming, put nine guys in the box. It wasn't happening. There's another outstanding effort, gone to waste. And I shouldn't say gone to waste. But it ends up not making the difference. Eric Gentry had the game of his life. 12 tackles, eight solo. Two or three and a half tackles per loss, a sack. He also forced a fumble and recovered the fumble that led to a score. It's these types of things. And the more I think about it, the more I come back to what was going on on the sideline. What's going on with the opposite play call? Why is Miller Moss having to throw the ball 51 times? And he only completed 55% of those passes. There was pressure in his face constantly. You know, I talked about you as a wide receiver group at the beginning of the season, these guys are good. Well, you know what? They are not a top 10 unit. They are not. Too many drops, too many easy drops. Did I talk about special teams? You know, I asked Coach Riley after the game, can you talk about your special team's performance? What was going on there? Why is Zachariah Branch fair catching balls when he's got 20 yards between him and the defender coming down on him on punt return? Same thing with kickoff return. It's almost like he's not seeing the field. So, anyway, I talked about the offensive line. They made an adjustment, Elijah Paige, when he wasn't able to get the job done on that left tackle in the second half, they took Mason Murphy, moved him over to the left side. They brought Tobias Raymond in, right tackle. He held his own, tough circumstances, but he held his own. There's an issue at Wright Guard. Got to get that figured out. Overall, again, they were going up against a really, really, really good defensive line. Give credit to Michigan. But USC's offensive line did not play well. I mean, watching those rush edges from Michigan, they're defensive ends, they're just flying by Paige, flying by Murphy on occasion. USC was constantly in 12 personnel. Keep them running back back. It wasn't enough. You see, have the numbers Michigan again, they weren't glistening. But they weren't getting the job done. Do you want me to talk about penalties? The ones that weren't called? I think I counted three face mask penalties that did not get called. One of them twisted Miller Moss down to the ground. That ended the first half. I think there was another one before that as well. Anyways, I know I probably shouldn't be taking this as hard as I am, but I watched that team give that game away. When you go down 14 to three and you keep fighting and you keep fighting and you keep fighting and you make the plays and you take the lead, you need to make sure that your leaders, your leaders, the leadership guys, the coaching staff, the players you depend on are making plays when they need to make plays and the play calls are being done properly. Somehow or another, that didn't happen in the second half. I hate to point the finger at anybody, but that one, I've got to rest on the coaching staff right now. That was not good, it wasn't good at all. Let me do this and we'll do one more segment and we're going to get out of here. Did I hear you're shopping for a car? Because I've been at it for ages. Such a time suck, right? Not really. I bought it on Caravana, super convenient. Oh, then comes all the financing, research, am I right? Well, you can, but I got pre-qualified for a Caravana auto loan in like two minutes. Yeah, but then all the number crunching in terms, right? Nope, I saw real numbers as I shopped, found my dream car, and got it in a couple of days. Wait, like you already have it? Yep. Go to Caravana.com to finance your car the convenient way. Again, I talked about Eric Gentry. I talked about Woody Marks, solid performances. Woody ended up with 100 yards on the day, on the ground. 13 cars, 100 yards. He had that 965 yard long run. I was really hoping he wasn't getting in the end zone. It didn't matter. They got there eventually. I mean, Michigan did everything they possibly could to make sure USC won this game. They missed an extra point. USC lost 27 to 24. They had a chance to at least attempt a field goal at the end of the first half. Didn't happen. Who knows what happens if this game goes to overtime? I talked about Eric Gentry's great play on defense. You know, Zachary had a statistically he had a good game. Six catches 98 yard, one of them went for 42. But again, too many drops. Your second leading receiver, Woody Marks, 5 for 40. Jacobi Lang, nice touchdown grab. He's playing injured right now. Again, I mentioned Kyron Hudson. A love that you can make the hard catches. I need to just start making these easy ones. This is three games that we've watched this happen. Got to stop. Again, defensive line linebackers. They were doing a pretty good job, but it's those explosive plays that they kept giving up. And it wasn't in the passing game. I mean, again, Alex Orgy, seven completions, 12 passing attempts, three, two yards. And they won. Come again. You will see six penalties, 32 yards, Michigan, only three for 25. That might have been one of the most poorly officiated games I've ever seen in my life. And I come from a way I end up pack full of officials. Not one holding call on Michigan. Not one. I got pictures on my phone right now. That winning touchdown that Michigan scored. I think it was their line tied in that came in number 98 or 88. Literally one hand on one shoulder, one hand on another shoulder, twisting the USC defensive lineman called holding. I lost count in the first half. Again, the face mask penalties. The shot on the Kai Lemon, hopefully he's okay. He was down flat on his back for a while. I saw the USC players again out on the field on a knee. USC didn't lose because of the officiated, but it sure as hell didn't help. It's not about, well, it's about missing certain calls at certain times of the game. USC's offensive line had played pretty clean tonight. Not so much. I called out the penalty. They had to evolve in on the opposite line. I don't think the defense had, there might have been one defense of penalty. It's significant, but it was all on the offense. My brain is scrambled right now. And I'm probably going to say something I don't want to say. So I'm going to end it on this. USC comes home, they got Minnesota, they got Wisconsin next week. Wisconsin was on a bi-week. I'm sure they're looking at the film going, all right. We know where we can exploit USC. Right now, they're off at some tackles. Again, they made the adjustment in the second half. It helped them a little bit, but they need to get that figured out. Big time. They got to figure out what's going on with Zachariah Branch. He has not looked right on special teams. He just seems very hesitant. It doesn't matter if it's on kickoff or punt return. Maybe he's hurt, I don't know. At this point, I have to assume something's going on. Maybe he can't see the ball, see the field. I don't know, but there was a lot of green grass between him and a defender, and he's very catchable. I mean, Eddie Joplisky, fantastic game. USC was actually winning the field position battle because of his 50, 60 yard punts. Anyways, deepens played well, then they give up an explosive play on the ground. Deepens played well, tackle, tackle, TFL, explosive play on the ground. USC was trailing 14 to three at the half. A lot of bad execution on USC is in on offense. In the first quarter, I had no idea what was going on. I will be back with a full episode of locked on USC, but that'll be up tomorrow after you watch this, it'll be up. I guess if I got to do that, I'm going to go cry myself to sleep. Oh, and by the way, last thing here, Big Ten Compass, Michigan. You got to do better with your food, and I know this is really trivial. Big Ten Media Day, Golden Corral serves better food than what you serve the media. Today in the press box, fish, Del Taco has better fish tacos than what you are serving today. Just saying, that's the one thing I will give credit to the Pac-12. Their media days, they spared no expense. Press box food, they don't spare any expense. It's starting to, a feeling that Big Ten, they don't care. Thanks, everybody, for making this episode of locked on USC, your instant reaction show. I'll be back again with another episode, so until then, everyone, you know what to do.
