He's going to he's got a man middle of the field and it is caught Or is it intercepted? Intercepted panthers got it and the 40 up with a battle for the football and you and I has it Their first takeaway of the year One to buy Blake Anderson the Omaha product out of Nebraska Blake. I mean This this has got to be a moment for you when you guys started this game You stepped out on the field you saw that what was that like for you for this team and this stadium that I'm sure you saw a lot About and experienced in your own way as an Nebraska native It was just a fun atmosphere to go out there We gave it all we had so Nothing to be ashamed of and it was just a fun atmosphere a lot of friends and family were at the game So fun to play in front of them again Were you recruited at all by by uh the corn huskers when you were over there at Omaha? Uh a little bit they had me up on a couple visits, but nothing really major at all so Well, tell us then about your decision to who recruited you to go to northern Iowa and What made your decision to become a panther? Uh coach nick danielson was my recruiter and same with uh coach clanton at the time So yeah, I just really like both those coaches. I like the program's history of winning and Yeah, I have a lot of family in Iowa too. So I just wanted to stay close Good decisions. What do you study in uh blake and what do you hope to do once your football career is over? Uh all have a major in kinesiology and physical education with uh two minors and coaching and sports administration And I just want to get into teaching coaching And then uh maybe be athletic director one day at a high school Well, awesome. Are your parents educators? No, they are not you good good catholic boy, right? You went to a catholic school over there in in Omaha. Yep. Okay. Good way Uh, you got another year of ball right after this. Yes, right. Yeah, so uh talk a little bit about Coming in here that first drive they went down. They scored. Okay, then you guys answered pretty good That was that was I mean 16 play drives are hard you guys had to be proud of the the effort to put in Especially on that first drive. That looked like you were you guys were executing pretty well Yeah, that was a good first drive. We just have to finish our drives now. We got a lot to build off for the next Games. We got a lot of big games coming up and Missouri valley is a tough conference. So It's a good film to watch and we'll learn from our mistakes and see what we did well and move on On that offensive line. What do you see as a member of that? That's that's really your guys' strength and what you guys Want to be known for this year when you do get into that Missouri valley football play We just want to be known as the most physical offense line in the country and just come off the ball and hit people hard Pretty much You probably saw the biggest guys that you're going to see on that other side right against Nebraska there What was the week like for you guys getting ready for this knowing the challenge that was going to be there? But no one kind of the high standard not kind of definitely the high standard as you guys want to say Yeah, we just prepared We need to pick it up a little bit from last week our practices were kind of sloppy during st thomas week so we really practice hard this week and You could show it in game because I thought we played pretty hard not the result we exactly wanted but played hard Looking forward to that trip to hawaii. You ever been? No, I have not been Well, you get that one off the bucket list and do a little loo out and you guys will have fun There was two series is down there two or three that we stopped them on four down series is From from getting in the end zone one before the half and one in the third quarter there You know that showed toughness and resilience for our team and the and the heart of them But it was just and there was plays and there was just too easy I was trying to get off the field. There were some breakdowns and there were some good plays too But you combine one breakdown with two good plays and it just feels like you're leaking all over the place and So but offensively I thought it was I thought we controlled it Everything happened the way it's supposed to that was a winnable football game. I mean we we we we drove the football We had control of the football. We were making good sound decisions I thought we were they were sub and left and right. So I knew we were aware and on them You know and and you know all the way to the end and our two running backs. I thought we're exceptional Uh, we're running hard like they did. So, you know off, you know, they're the big the big time errors You know, you go back with that one bounce run down here right before right at the end of the game you know when everything was kind of wrapped up and then You know Sergio dropping the punt they score that was a big turnaround right there because that's when the play started caving in on you a little bit Uh when it was really going nuts about that time But uh to the credit of the defense they stopped and got off the field without I think we gave up a field goal on that one I went we're pinned down pretty good. So yeah, a lot. There's a lot of good things Uh showing toughness. I thought we were tough as they were and uh, I thought we were as strong as they were They were a little bit faster in places than we were But uh, but I tell you what we I played more man than I ever thought it would play against Nebraska for crying a lot And our guys did a great job at it. So that was a big time test to see can we play man coverage against some of these guys and And they did a great job doing it. That was the adjustment was man coverage behind us with you Yeah, I mean that that guy back there for a freshman. He showed a lot of poise He's got a lot of hype, but uh, you saw him you seen him on film more than we did You know, what how do you do? How do you stop that coach? You had to I mean a couple of times you had him dead to right you had to write blitz called up and everything and and then you know He just managed to to sidestep you get away or you know, make a sidearm throw or whatever he does. I mean That has to be kind of frustrating down there as you're watching that and you got the right play dialed up And then you know, then not able to execute it. Yeah, and that was that was a big one And the big one was we had him hit him by a 14-yard loss that turned into an 80-yard gain And actually there was an air in that that we could had an intercept on that had he launched it like that But you know a player that can make a play like that. That's that's what makes them different is You know the the regular stuff you see every day, but once in a while you got to do something different there Everybody else and he did something different. We should we were hit we had him dead to rights on the call and on the hit and and uh just didn't do it correctly, but You know, it was it was one of those that we should have played better on defense And offensively it was the penalties that stopped the drives more so than Nebraska stopping drives Yeah, a lot of a lot of penalties that that ended up hurting you in big ways Uh, you had a couple of emir couldn't go at dn you had to switch those guys around a little bit How big of an adjustment was for that for the business elves going moving from tackle to end coach? I thought he did okay. He did he did okay. I mean we lost we lost naren button Uh that he was passed rushing forward. So we lost him. He was our edge guy We lost him and then uh and then we lost uh zak so we lost two two guys on defense from from the previous We can we'd already had lost olo and frayser in cam. So but you know the guys out there. I'm not Shoot, we're good. No with the guys out there let alone when those guys get back, but we gotta we got to grow up fast We're we're making uh inexperienced errors that You know because we got a couple well and got a couple older guys four older guys on the deal But i'm walking away going. Hey, we did uh robbie did a great job in coverage Fletch Fletch Fletch had had the had the first intercept against the the quarterback In his career here and that was a great football play he had run that thing down And so there are some things there that we can grow from if we can go back and learn from him Well, you always when you play a game up against the you know the numbers they have and the size they have you worry about injuries It looked like maybe done got dinged up a little bit your quarterback and and also lane prior Can you tell us any more about those and and how that how their prognosis? I think lana'll be I think lana'll be fine done got high load and But but but I think uh and then robbie robbie was cramping up is what happened to him So, you know, I I'm walking away thinking here that they got they got as beat up as we did Because the type of football game who would have thought you'd come in here rush the football day long against nebraska And go ahead to head with them in the rushing game Um, you know and did plan on running done that my hand it up being in your leading rusher Which to me is it's kind of surprised, you know, the the way it's gone with the first couple of games Well, honestly, this defense is that's they don't they don't account for the quarterback You know, this is this this defense is a great defense But it does not account for the quarterback all the time and playing the defense I I know that's the hard guy to get because you don't it You say you got him, but on a piece of paper it looks like you got him But if you do it right, you don't so that's why it was a good game plan to use him But it also opened up something run game. We probably could we probably should have rushed it better with with the two running backs We have because when you give that ball the Tie right now tie is good. Ties tie is you saw him against elite players Playing like he did and then and so I'm looking at the two running backs. We have the two tight ends we have And even the offensive line has got to do a good job too and they are so I've Take the holding penalties out of it. You know, like I told the guys down there that's holding on every play is just who's calling it so but No, there's there's a lot of things that we can take and grow from if we'll learn from it Yeah, I mean personally, I'm more encouraged after this game than I was after watching last week's game Oh, there's a lot different. Yeah, this was a ball game. Yeah last week was a practice You know, only because we didn't it was you know, you're getting this kind of a deal and you know what was For me, you know, I I deferred the first one because I thought we could stop him And I thought we could play with these guys and I said, well, hey We'll play this thing out right We're just not gonna score the first drive We could we could win this thing if we do a good job in the first half and get the ball the first in the second half and it all played out Right. Yeah, we just gave up Our offense could have scored the touchdowns instead of the three points And we could have had 10 10 at the half or and then come out of the second half We started another drive and got another Three to seven. So it was playing out to be a tight game. It's just we didn't finish those drives and then we gave up some big plays on defense And finally coach you mentioned it you were impressed by how your guys were able to line up and go against obviously What's a really good team time will tell just how good Nebraska is as they roll through But you know the skill they have How does a game like this reinforce for your guys who have confidence and you have confidence in them because that's why they're here How does it reinforce? Hey, we are good enough to go against anybody that we're going to face We just have to go out and execute learn from some of the things. What what does that do? What does this game do in that realm for your guys? I think they they know now. It's not what I know It's what they know and even told them previous to the game At the hotel going Here's how it's going to play out because You're you're gonna go out there. You say you say you're gonna play with him You say you're gonna go total. But yet You won't know till you get in the locker room, but I promise you at halftime you'll be sitting there going man We can we can take these as you just have to be in the game at halftime knowing that you can play with them now And we were in that position quite frankly and we were in that position all the way through the third quarter And uh, so yeah, but now they know Uh, what they're capable of now the key is though. I've been to other Years that they got to grow from it too. They just can't say this is it Because now you got to come back off this and get another football game and Get on a plane here on wednesday and and try to get lined up again And you got to be better next time you line up and learn from this otherwise there's there's no growth Leave the hula shirts at home. Just bring helmets. We'll go on a business trip coach. Thanks for the time. All right very good guys
